REVAMP FOR THE LIBRARY

Next event is Saturday 7th February 7.30-9pm

WELL DONE TO... LAURA GARDNER

The prestigious and increasingly popular Norwich Fashion Week will return to the city from 5th-12th March 2015, promising yet again to put Norwich on the map for fashion and shopping. A schedule of city-wide events and catwalk shows will take place, featuring a selection of styles from Norwich’s best loved independent boutiques and high-street stores. Previews of lines from the region’s hottest upand-coming designers and catwalk shows accompanied by live music form just a handful of what Fashion Week enthusiasts can expect. Visit the website www.norwichfashion.co.uk to find out the very latest on what’s on offer and check out our Norwich Fashion week guide on page 29.

After nearly nine years since the doors of this impressive, Grade II-listed, former Subscription Library opened, a lavish revamp has started on The Library. An impressive zinc-topped cocktail bar will be part of a luxurious new-look bar area with casual sofas, Wi-Fi, new flooring, wallpaper and bronze leather banquettes – all adding up to a more relaxed, but smart, casual vibe. Check out their new daytime tapas menu and local craft beers too. www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk February/March 2015 Vanilla

TIMBER HILL Superb shopping since 1340!

BY LUCY OHSTEN

F YOU’VE HAD YOUR FILL of malls and crave a shopping experience with a difference, Timber Hill in the centre of Norwich is a superb example of fascinating history and modern shopping in perfect harmony. It’s a great place to amble around, take in the history and investigate some innovative and unusual shops. One of the oldest recorded city streets, Timber Hill even pre-dates Elm Hill in Norwich and is packed full of history! It has three of just five thatched buildings in the entire city, and in the Middle Ages was a centre for buying and selling of goods – known then as Swinemarket Hill, and later Timbermarket Hill. During WWII, Timber Hill and the surrounding area was badly damaged in the Norwich Blitz of 1942. But today – alongside well-loved pub The Murderers and one of only two surviving coaching

inns in Norwich, The Bell Hotel, plus many other historical buildings – the area boasts a fantastic range of individual boutiques and fashion and lifestyle shops… offering something out of the ordinary. In one of the most distinctive buildings, Ward & Wright has been trading on Timber Hill for over 30 years. Their range of high quality European comfort shoes includes premium brands such as Ecco and Josef Seibel, plus other more unusual choices such as Think, an Austrian ‘green’ brand. Manager Amy Golding says: “Timber Hill is a very interesting place to trade. As well as having a fascinating history it has a strong community feel and all the shops here are friendly and helpful. The Murderers is a popular pub and always lively.” “At Ward & Wright, we pride ourselves on offering our customers the best quality footwear 

a facelift to make it even more appealing to discerning shoppers. We’ve had some rather disruptive works going on with the redevelopment of Westlegate House, but that will bring some great new restaurants, cafes and other innovative shops. It’s a superb area of the city to be part of, and really on the up.” Prima Donna Bridalwear is synonymous with weddings in Norwich, and the independent retailer is one of the newest additions to Timber Hill, moving there in August 2014 after 21 years in Castle Mall. The family-run store prides itself on offering a very personal touch for the special day, as well as prom dresses. Theirs is one of the largest showrooms in Norwich, and they stock top designers from all over the world – with some sensational gowns from Paris and Milan, as well as the best of the British designs.

OR BRIDES on a budget who want to look amazing without breaking the bank – and help their local cancer charity at the same time – Big C on Timber Hill is a must-visit. With an entire upstairs floor dedicated to clothing and accessories for brides, bridesmaids, grooms, and mother-of-the-bride, everyone can be kitted out in style. And you won’t find any horrifying 1980s meringues here! The shop has some fantastic off-the-peg dresses donated from contemporary up-market bridal shops, as well as individuals wanting to do their bit to help fight cancer in the community. Theresa Webster, shop manager at Big Timber Hill is the C, says: “We started the bridal side seven perfect location years ago and it’s been a huge success. “Friends have warned that divorce costs can spiral out of control

How can I keep divorce costs to a minimum? MY QUESTION: After 10 years of marriage my husband and I decided to separate after Christmas. I am keen to move on with my life and would like to start divorce proceedings. However, I am concerned about the costs involved, as friends have warned that these can spiral out of control. We own our home, have no children and the split is as amicable as these things can be. Can I get divorced with some certainty about the costs involved upfront?

24

G

ETTING DIVORCED IS A big step for anyone and concerns over finances can add to the burden. Sadly it is common for family solicitors to receive an increased number of new enquiries from spouses or partners requiring advice in relation to divorce or separation at this time of year. This trend appears to be attributable to the fact that Christmas is a trigger for spouses or partners who feel that they cannot continue with the relationship any longer, although generally separation is something that couples might

have been contemplating for quite a while beforehand. Some clients see the start of a New Year as a symbol of a fresh start and often couples already considering separation will decide that they will wait until the New Year before they take any action, which suggests that the rise in separation at this time of year is not just down to the festivities. Couples are increasingly trying to reduce the costs of resolving their problems by dealing with their own divorce or dissolution, as well as an increased number of couples willing to consider Vanilla February/March 2015

REAL LIVES mediation. In order to address some of the concerns held by clients, Steeles Law launched fixed fee services in 2014, which help to provide certainty as to the cost of a divorce or dissolution. The costs of the fixed fee divorce start from £450 plus VAT. We have also recently started to offer a “pay as you go” service, giving clients the flexibility to instruct us as and when they need help at various stages of the separation and divorce process. Unfortunately separation is not easy at any time of the year, however at Steeles Law our family team strives to help you deal with the issues in an empathetic and timely manner and in the most cost effective way for our clients as possible. If you are considering divorce, dissolution or separation, the outcome always depends on the circumstances of each case and therefore we would urge anyone about to embark on this to seek independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity.

the individual circumstances.

➍ DON’T ASSUME

There are many myths associated with divorce and separation, therefore assume nothing.

➎ REMAIN AMICABLE AND CONSIDER MEDIATION

Try and have a discussion with your spouse about the way forward. The days of parties going to court for a judge to make a decision in respect of financial matters are becoming infrequent.

➏ GET ORGANISED REGARDING YOUR FINANCES

Ensure you know what bank accounts and debts are held in joint names.

➐ FOCUS ON THE BEST

INTERESTS OF THE CHILDREN

Always discuss the situation out

of earshot of the children and avoid making the children feel that they have to take sides.

➐ BE REALISTIC Be realistic in your expectations – whatever agreement is reached has to be workable for both parties.

➒ CONSIDER USING A COUNSELLOR

Discussing purely emotional matters with your lawyer is not the best use of your funds.

➓ DO NOT COMMENT ABOUT YOUR SPOUSE ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

Commenting about your spouse on a social networking site will only antagonise the situation further and is not advisable, whatever they may have done.

We are here to help... For further advice on this issue or to obtain a quote for a fixed fee divorce, please contact the family team at Steeles Law. Our specialists, Amanda Owens (right) and Emma Alfieri (below) are on hand to help.

TOP 10 PRACTICAL TIPS

➊ GET LEGAL ADVICE AT AN EARLY STAGE

Even if you do not intend to formally instruct a solicitor, it is always advisable to have an initial chat to establish your legal position.

➋ DON’T PANIC

t: 01603 598000 e: family@steeleslaw.co.uk 2 The Norwich Business Park, Whiting Road, Norwich NR4 6DJ

New Heart Breakfast co-host

Congratulations on being the new co-host of Heart Breakfast with Dave Taylor across Norfolk and Suffolk. Tell us a bit about yourself. Thanks! Umm, well I’m a tall, vegetarian East Anglian native! I grew up in Great Yarmouth but I left to join the Royal Navy. I eventually ended up in radio and after living and working all over the place, I’m happy to be back home in the East. You were the producer of Heart Breakfast. How different is it being a presenter? I used to be able to tell Dave what to do as his Producer, I can’t now! But I guess the main difference as a presenter is that I speak more! I love having a quick chit-chat with listeners that contact the show, so the extra interaction is the main difference and a lovely bonus.

PHOTOGRAPHY: SYLVAINE POITAU

What can people expect when they tune into you and Dave on Heart Breakfast? Dave and I like a laugh and so hopefully there’ll be plenty of that. We’re also very keen on a club classic so expect a sing-a-long. You must have to get up really early. What’s your secret for being so awake in the morning? A very loud alarm because I’m terrible at getting up! It goes off at 4.20am. Dave is way better! He gets into work February/March 2015 Vanilla

earlier than me. Yawning is banned, it’s a slippery slope to sleepiness once you start doing that. The cold walk to work helps loads and then once I’m in the studio, it’s fine! What do you like to do when you’re not at work? I do play drums – really badly! I can lose a couple of hours just tapping along to stuff. It doesn’t happen very often but I love those afternoons where you’ve nowhere to be and you can enjoy a laugh with friends and family at the pub. The pub needs to have good food and be dog-friendly so that my Puli, Sonny Jim, can come too. Where are your favourite places to hang out in Norfolk and Suffolk? Well we’re spoilt aren’t we? Ipswich Marina in the sunshine is gorgeous. I’m dying to take Sonny Jim for a long walk at Orford because it looks so pretty. I’ve promised myself I’ll do that this year. For shopping, I’ll pick Norwich – it has all the big names and loads of indie shops too - and I’ll always have a soft spot for Great Yarmouth, the market chips are the best! Tune into Heart Breakfast with Dave and Heidi every weekday morning from 6am on Heart on 102.4FM, DAB digital radio, at heart.co.uk and on the Heart app.

HOW TO SHOP THE

BY SHEREE HANNA

Vintage Look

N

ORWICH’S VINTAGE fashion scene has mushroomed in recent years with a multitude of shops springing up to meet the demand of trendsetters looking for something unique and fabulous. City fashionistas have been eager to hunt down clothing from times gone by to make their own individual style statement just like some of vintage’s most famous advocates. Celebrities such as fashion and interior designer Pearl Lowe, wife of Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, lives the vintage lifestyle while TV chef Gizzi Erskine looks hot in the kitchen sporting her 60s beehive, mini-dresses and flicky eyeliner. Norwich has its own exponents of vintage including Shona Daly, who along with partner James, ran for seven years the Prim Vintage Fashion shop in Norwich Lanes. Its success has been such that six months ago Shona decided to close the shop and take her business, www.primvintagefashion.com, online in order to reach an even wider audience. “The amazing thing we found is that vintage appeals to a wide age range from young teens who want to emulate the style they have seen in magazines to pensioners who prefer to buy good quality,” said Shona ■

32

Shona’s top tips for adding some vintage style to your wardrobe:

1

Know your body shape as different eras suit certain figures. For example hour-glass figures are perfect for 1950s tea dresses, while tall and slender are better suited to the 1970s maxi dresses.

2

3

Vintage clothing often comes in a plethora of colours and prints so don’t be afraid to try things on you would not normally consider as they can transform you.

Avoid the ‘fancy dress’ look of dressing in one era, by mixing vintage with modern.

4

Create your own signature style by using your imagination to team pieces such as jeans and top with say a vintage blazer.

5

Revel in the nostalgia of knowing that at some point someone else wore your 1950s party dress. The Vintage Show

How to be a Trendsetter Vanilla talks to Anne Neill, owner of Walkers of Pottergate

BY SHEREE HANNA

W

HEN IT COMES TO setting trends Norwich premier boutique owner Anne Neill prefers to be leading the fashion pack rather than following. It is because of this mantra that Walkers of Pottergate has been a fashion success story for 25 years with its special brand of edgy and individual labels enabling customers to make their own style statements. When it comes to buying, Anne’s finger is firmly on the fashion pulse, but unlike some rivals she is a risk taker when it comes to selecting more avant-garde clothing. “I do not necessarily buy into mainstream trends because that is totally too High Street for Walkers. My customers want to be fashion leaders so I try to push boundaries a little bit further,” explained Anne. “When I first started the business I wanted to offer something else other than mainstream fashion and as an independent store I am able to take a few more risks and

The team at Walkers

chances on new and inspiring designers and labels.” Anne buys from all over Europe, specifically Germany, and also attends trade shows in London. As with all boutique owners and buyers, she is influenced by the trends already set by the designers at the shows. Fashion forecasting for a particular season can be predicted years in advance as it actually starts with the textile designers and manufacturers.

For the past few seasons one of the biggest trends for Walkers has been the harem pant. “We aim to be a little more controversial and daring so at first we had to convince our customers to try them on, now we can’t persuade them to wear normal trousers.” For 2015, Anne predicts denim in new guises will by flying off her rails along with the trend for monochrome accessorised with acid colours such as sharp lemon, racy red and flaming orange ■

Spring colours are an exciting mix of soft silhouettes, vibrant cocktail shades, and 70s retro. Nautical designs teamed with shades of yellow create a crisp, clean style. Safari dresses with blazers and tribal designs highlighted with bright aqua and cobalt, create an atmosphere of the African plains. Warm peach and other pastel shades are in abundance, as are lots of bold prints in loose trousers and maxi skirts. The fun element comes from the 70s disco era in the form of denim with retro shirts, flares and high-waisted trousers. We’ll see you in store soon...

VALENTINE’S EVE

After Jack Valentine’s mysterious return last February, there’s talk in the Lanes that he may be back on 13th February this year... For several centuries, Jack was famous for delivering gifts to families on Valentine’s Eve, a tradition which is synonymous to Norwich and Norfolk. We’ll be anticipating his appearance with goody bags, window displays and a special evening of chocolate tasting with Booja-Booja at the Museum of Norwich. norwichlanes.co.uk

Tried and tested, we can safely say The Wingman makes Norwich’s finest crispy, succulent chicken wings. Launched with a successful debut pop-up at The Birdcage (it was a sell out) we can’t wait for more opportunities to taste these... NORWICH JAZZ CLUB Monday 9th March

The Norwich Jazz Club has been established in the city as a place to hear great live jazz every Tuesday night since 1989. Their programme continues to feature jazz to suit a wide range of tastes from mainstream through to the most exciting contemporary projects, featuring

local, national and international artists alike. Now there’s a chance to join in, with their monthly jam session at the Redwell Bar in the Maddermarket Theatre. Come on down and take part or relax and listen to some of the City’s finest jazz talents.

On 31st March, Lucy Porter brings her 10th solo show to the Norwich Lanes. Finding modern life a bit difficult? Maybe you were born in the wrong era? In this show Lucy tries to find her rightful place in history. She ponders whether she’d rather be a bewhiskered Victorian explorer, a 1920s Hollywood starlet or Hatshepsut the Egyptian pharaoh. “Impeccably punch lined anecdotes… Genuinely delightful” The Telegraph “A witty, thoughtful show delivered with winning ease and bucket loads of charm” The List For more information and to book, visit www.norwichartscentre.co.uk

visionary entrepreneur, Hubert d’Ornano launched Sisley in 1976 with an innovative intuition: take advantage of technological progress to make use of the best that plants and essential oils have to offer in beauty products. Over nearly four decades the company has become one of the most prestigious brands in the world of selective cosmetics. Phytocosmetology, at the heart of Sisley creations, uses the best natural plant extracts to obtain the best cosmetic results.

52

Every natural extract contains active ingredients that have a specific effect. By combining several natural extracts that work in synergy, the action of each one can be enhanced. Sisley’s success is based on the capacity of its laboratories for innovation and products are only brought to Market after a long process of development and testing. The range includes products to suit all skin types and ages including hero products such as Ecological Compound and the Black Rose Mask and more recently The Black Rose Oil which have all gained cult status. Sisley also offers a range of unforgettable fragrances including the iconic Eau du Soir and a beautiful make-up collection.

BEAUTY

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Vanilla beauty expert Sue Carter

CAN I MIX MY PRODUCTS WITHOUT COMPROMISING THERE EFFECTIVENESS? It is OK to mix products in the palm of your hand prior to application. For example, mix moisturiser with your foundation to make it lighter in colour and coverage. However never mix a SPF lotion with another cosmetic product as you may compromise the effectiveness of the SPF and the level of protection it gives. It is also important to never mix products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid with a product which contain retinol or vitamin C as the acids break down the compounds making the product ineffective. Mixing salicylic or glycolic acid with other products can also bring about excessive exfoliation or cause irritation. I HAVE NOTICED A FEW AGE SPOTS APPEARING ON MY HANDS. WHAT CAN I DO TO TREAT THEM AND PREVENT MORE APPEARING? Age spots appear are the result of sun damage, so the best way to prevent further ones appearing is to use a hand cream that contains a minimum SPF 15. This will also reduce the collagen breakdown to the hands and prevent the skin thinning and wrinkling. You could also consider using skin lightening products to help with the appearance

54

of existing age spots. Treatments available to remove age spots are laser treatment and chemical peels. These work by breaking the pigment up and lifting it up from the deeper layer of the skin to the surface. You may find that age spots may scab over or become flakey, but this is a sign that the pigment has been broken down. Results will be permanent, as long as you protect your hands from further sun exposure. HELP! MY EYELINER ALWAYS SEEMS TO SMEAR! First off, make sure you are using a waterproof eyeliner, especially if your eyes water quite a lot. It could be that you have an oily skin or products you apply to your skin contain high levels of oil. To counteract this apply a setting powder to the area to absorb excess oils, then apply your eyeliner. You may also want to consider using a gel or liquid eyeliner rather than kohl eyeliner which contains natural oils and is more likely to smear. HOW SHOULD I SHAPE MY EYEBROWS? You should brush your brows in the direction they grow naturally. Then lightly sketch in tiny thin lines, to mimic your hairs, using a brow pencil for a stronger look, or brow powder for a more natural look. Work from the bottom of your inner brow upward, then fill in and create an arch by creating a point which should line up with the centre of your eye. Finally, finish by sketching tiny hair strokes in a downward motion from the arch to no lower than the outer corner of your eye. This prevents your eyes looking closed or droopy. n

Dermalift

‘The knifeless facelift’ at Thai Herbal Retreat

A

nti-ageing, express, moisture boosting, aromatherapy, soothing... the choice of facials on offer these days seems endless. Perhaps you might have noticed there's a new kid on the block – the ‘lifting’ facial, which promises longer lasting effects because it treats the tissues beneath the skin. We were curious and wanted to see if the claims were true. Thai Herbal Retreat offered us the chance to try one of their Dermalift facials – they have been offering this treatment for some time and it has become one of their most sought after treatments. What does Dermalift do?

The Dermalift non-surgical face lift uses the latest technology to lift and tone tired sagging muscles, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eye, forehead, mouth, cheeks, neck and throat. This is achieved by the use of gentle micro-currents of adjustable timed pulses and frequencies, applied through specially designed facial probes administered by a fully trained therapist. A course of treatments promises to: • Reduce lines and wrinkles • Lift and tone facial muscles • Firm facial contours

56

• Refine pores • Reduce puffiness around eyes • Improve acned skin • A fresher improved complexion • A younger skin texture • Improve moisture retention The experience

My therapist Joy was careful to give my skin a thorough analysis before beginning treatment. Very knowledgeable, she also gave me lots of skincare tips to try at home. The whole facial experience lasts over an hour. My face was deeply cleansed with a gorgeous Kiwi scrub and steam. Then, a soothing gel was applied before Joy worked across sections of the face with differently designed probes.

The effects

As a regular early riser, I’d been particularly keen to improve the tired area around my eyes. I had the usual glow you’d have after any facial but two days later my eyes looked brighter and the skin, firmer. Not much gets past my beauty-savvy girlfriends but surprisingly, a man actually complimented my fresh face! He said it looked ‘different’ and when pressed a little, added the word ‘nice’. Praise indeed! VANILLA READER OFFER Dermalift Facial £49 (normal price £60) To book call 01603 632188/673240 or visit www.thaherbalretreat.co.uk

F YOUR MOUTH ISN’T WATERING by now, you should probably seek help! This is just a small sample of the delicious flavours made by specialist ice cream maker Lakenham Creamery, a mainstay of traditional Norfolk excellence, and still going strong after nearly 100 years. Based in Norwich and started in 1921 by the superbly-named Christmas Aldous, Lakenham Creamery has become synonymous with tradition and quality – ‘ice cream as your Grandma remembers it’ – with milk and cream sourced locally. Accolades galore have been heaped on the ice cream maker; an amazing 120 awards – the first was given in 1937 – not to mention 23 gold medals in the coveted Great Taste Awards, which is judged by top chefs, cookery writers and food critics. Owner Chris Coughlan bought Lakenham Creamery in 1992, and under his careful management it has continued

68

to thrive, and is appealing to an ever-growing audience of discerning ice cream lovers… of all ages! “We believe in blending the best of traditional and new technologies,” explains Chris.

“The basic methods we use to make the ice cream really haven’t changed that much since 1921, it’s made in the proper ‘slow food’ way. “Ice cream is becoming more and more popular as an everyday food enjoyed by a whole range of people – not just by kids at the cinema. Quality is key, and our priority

is to maintain that at all times, and offer a very special, artisan product. Our ethos is ‘keep it simple, keep it local, and give it the ‘wow’ factor!” The products certainly do have that wow factor… in large scoops! Lakenham Creamery produces three ranges; Aldous Traditional Ice Cream, a firm favourite for over 90 years, which is made using fresh milk straight from the farm. Then there is the gourmet Norfolk County Ice Cream range, which uses 80% fresh cream and no artificial colours. This comes in 24 gorgeous flavours such as Zabaglione, Passion Fruit and Cointreau & Mandarin - not to mention some festive ones such as Christmas Pudding and Apricot & Brandy. There is also Eileen’s Diabetic Ice Cream, developed with a dairy specialist at Reading University, and proving a huge success. Some rather illustrious customers have given their

seal of approval to Lakenham Creamery’s ice cream. “We are very proud to have been a supplier to Harrods for over 25 years,” says Chris. “We also supply the Sandringham Estate. “Alongside this, our products can be found throughout East Anglia and into London, at selected Waitrose stores, under their Regional Food programme, and in 400 outlets, including farm shops, delis and restaurants.” This small business has just five staff – dedicated and cheerful chaps who work alongside Chris. Damien, Mike and Liam make the product, Carl is Operations Manager, and Patrick takes care of deliveries. Most of the team has been at the creamery for at least 20 years – a testament to how much they love creating this very special product. “We work like a family,” explains Chris. “We all have an input and everyone is involved with the running of the business and flavour ideas. Recently we’ve introduced some exciting new flavours; Salted Caramel – that one was Carl’s idea – White Chocolate, Lemon Lime, Rocky Road and Cinnamon. Our plan is to unveil a Rhubarb & Custard one very soon. We’re very excited about that.” n For more details on Lakenham creamery products and where to buy their Ice Cream in Norwich visit the Lakenham creamery website: www.lakenhamcreamery.co.uk

I

N THE SUMMER OF 2014, Benji’s restaurant in Jarrold’s underwent its third refurbishment in 30 years, turning it from cafeteria style to a more modern bistro feel. I popped in for lunch after a morning’s shopping, and found a bright, airy, well-designed space that had a real buzz about it. It was full… always a good sign! The menu is an eclectic mix that offers something for every taste. There are light bites of artisan breads and olives; meat, fish and veggie sharing boards that offer a fun, hands-on way to eat; hot gourmet sandwiches such as Croque Monsieur or Norfolk Field Mushroom, some great salads of Warm Smoked Chicken or Aromatic Duck; lovely lunches such as Eggs Benedict or Plaice Goujons; and a 2-course lunch for £12.50, which comes with a glass of wine. To round things off nicely there are some tempting desserts, such as Affogato Ice Cream or Gooey Chocolate and Orange Brownie. For later in the day, shoppers can wind down with afternoon tea, a wonderful

traditional treat of finger sandwiches, scones, thick Cornish cream and lashings of tea – with 13 types to choose from! I adore fish, so for my lunch I chose the pan fried sea bass, with ribbons of leek and potato on a Champagne cream sauce. The presentation was exquisite, it looked almost too good to eat… almost! The fish was moist and wonderfully crisp-skinned, and the leeks and potatoes soft and bathed in a delicious sauce. It was all very well seasoned too. It was impressive, it was elegant, and certainly good enough to pass muster in any fine-dining establishment. Over a very good cup of freshly ground coffee, I chatted with Head Chef, and Food & Beverage Manager Nick Harris. Originally from Cornwall, Nick joined the Jarrold’s team two years ago and brings with him 25 years of cooking in top London 5-star hotels and eateries. “My brief was make each of Jarrold’s eateries feel unique in their own way, and to create a more modern bistro-style for Benji’s. I enjoy creating modern British dishes, and I am passionate about using local ingredients across the board – from milk, to fish, meat, everything. We have great relationships with many local suppliers, Norfolk has fantastic high-quality food and we are spoiled for choice. “I am keen to help my staff to understand and appreciate where

food comes from, its quality and to be part of the creative dining process. We visit farms and other suppliers, and it all helps them to engage in the experience and develop the passion that I feel is essential in this business. “I believe the key to good food is simplicity and quality. Jarrold’s is a department store, so our food is not overfussy or pretentious. But we still want to offer diners a memorable experience, with a bit of theatre to make it as interesting as possible. And it should be fun, as well. I think we are doing something right – we often have queues to get in, and the feedback we receive is always very positive.” Diners clearly agree with this. I spoke to several others during my lunch date and all were very pleased with the quality of

the food, service and overall experience, not to mention those personal touches and attention to detail that makes the experience so special. The future for Benji’s looks bright and Nick is ambitious to keep improving quality and offering something new. “In January we will be expanding our range of gourmet hot sandwiches and adding dishes like lemon sole and red wine risotto to the lunch menu. There are also plans to open up a large Italian-style eatery on the ground floor of with pizza ovens.” Watch this space – there are exciting times ahead for Benji’s and the Jarrold’s experience! s soon as January comes around I think we all feel we should embark on Dry January or at least cut down on the excesses of Christmas drinking. For many it’s a long month, paying off the credit cards often means we are not able to consider buying an expensive of wine. I have picked a wine that will cheer you up whatever the long dark days of January throw at you. Sicily is producing some stunning wines using indigenous varieties that are a little different from the more usual Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. So pop in to Jarrold’s lovely deli and try the delicious, just simply quaffable, Catarratto ‘Il Meridione’ Sicily 2013. This is a ripe, versatile and approachable dry white from western Sicily. Floral peach and tropical fruit aromas and a hint of fennel, rounded and gently honeyed flavours on the palate are balanced by lemony acidity. Ideal as an aperitif or to accompany seafood, grilled fish, salads and cold white meats.

Yes Chef! A delightful Valentine’s dessert for the one you love from Liz Clancy at The Kitchenary

Yogurt Coeur à la Crème YOU WILL NEED: 6 heart-shaped moulds (you can use ramekins, but end result is not as effective) and cheesecloth SERVES 6

250g cream cheese 1 cup sweet greek yogurt (we use our own, made with our easiyo yogurt makers) ¼ sifted icing sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla essence 1 cup whipping cream Fruit to decorate

1 Line each of the moulds with a piece of dampened cheesecloth.

2 Beat cream cheese and yogurt together. And the sugar and the vanilla essence and beat again until smooth. 3 Whip cream to ‘peak’ stage in a separate bowl, then fold into the cream cheese mixture. 4 Spoon mixture into moulds and chill in fridge for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. 5 Turn out onto a plate, prettily decorate with chosen fruit and syrup. Enjoy! This is also especially good with a toffee sauce!

! BE EQUIPPED

Ideally you should use perforated heart-shaped mould to make the classic French dessert Coeur à la Crème – allowing the whey to drain away during chilling. But heart-shaped ramekins are the next best thing, available from The Kitchenary. See yoghurt maker page 67

and intimate setting and were offered tea, coffee or soft drinks – sparkling wine and champagne are available at an extra cost. The tea menu was lovely and featured 16 different varieties, from the well-known and familiar (Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong) to the exotic and inviting (Persian Pomegranate, White Pear & Ginger). It even included Pai Mu Tan, or white peony tea, reputed to be one of China’s rarest. We were served (although “attended to” may be more apt) by a very pleasant gentleman who succeeded admirably in spoiling us rotten throughout the afternoon. He allowed us to take our time, made a point of asking if either had any allergies or special dietary requirements, and even had fellow diners casting envious glances in our direction – together with remarks as to how wonderful it all looked. You could hardly blame them. When it arrived, our afternoon tea looked stunning, with three tiers of sheer bliss. Fifteen finger sandwiches included smoked salmon, cream cheese, cheese and pickle, and ham. The 11 cakes featured a Bakewell tart, shortbreads and fruit cake. There were two scones. There were macaroons.

With such a feast of treats to choose from, it's hard to single out one for special mention, but my dining partner simply couldn’t get enough of the smoked salmon finger sandwiches. the hotel or using the brilliant website www.afternoontea.co.uk. which to enjoy it all! What truly amazed us was that it’s actually possible – should you find the room, and the time – to have a further round of delights from the cake trolley. Even though the coffee cheesecake looked mighty tempting, it was simply a cake too far for us. With such a feast of treats to choose from, it's hard to single out one for special mention, but my dining partner simply couldn’t get enough of the smoked salmon finger sandwiches. While my top marks were reserved for the wondrous Bakewell tart, perfect in every respect. If you want to enjoy afternoon tea at Sprowston Manor, it will cost you £15.59 per person – which may seem like an odd figure until you learn that 1559 is the name of the restaurant, turning the attractive price into a charming talking point.

Steve Balmer-Walters Head of retail at NCFC

My City Life

goalkeeper John Ruddy. We have also introduced more depth to our children’s ranges, accessories and souvenirs and added footwear, jeans and jogger bottoms to our offerings.

Can you give us any clues on the designs of the next Norwich strip?

What brought you to Norwich City?

The opportunity for me to change industry and focus on retail, something I have done for the past 28 years. I was also very touched by the family and community feel of Norwich when my wife and I first came to look around.

What is most rewarding about being Head of Retail for a high-profile football club? Seeing customers happy with their purchase and them feeding back about the great shopping experience. It is a great light-bulb moment when someone gets a product they really want, especially when this happens for a child. There is no better reward in retail.

What are your plans for Canaries Official? I want Canaries Official to lead the way within the football industry by giving customers fashionable clothing, accessories and gifts that wouldn’t feel out of place on the high street. I want to continue adding good quality products that are current and competitively priced, and I am also working on improving the customer experience across all our retail channels.

Talk us through the exciting Christmas campaign just gone.

We have had a strong Christmas period, breaking all manner of sales records. We have really focused on giving our customers great gift ideas and we have sourced products from around the world. We have also had a successful launch for our new Ladies Wear range inspired by Laura Ruddy, wife of Norwich City and England

You're clearly a man of style, where in Norwich do you like to shop?

Being new to Norfolk and still finding my way around I have really enjoyed shopping in The Lanes. The independent shops are niche and perfect for finding that something special. I still strongly believe that when we all go shopping we are always secretly looking for that unique purchase.

How do you enjoy Norfolk on your days off?

I have really enjoyed heading to the coast whenever I have time. My wife and I have had some great Sunday lunches at Back to the Garden in Letheringsett. I have also had some amazing hot chocolates and cake at Stiffkey stores in Stiffkey. The Feast on the Street which is held monthly at the Forum in the centre of Norwich is very cool, with some amazing street food and a great atmosphere too. n

Steve Balmer-Walters, Head of retail at Norwich City Football Club, looks after all retail stores, ecommerce, wholesale, licensing, and lotteries for the club. He’s 44 years old, married to Ellie and lives close to the north Norfolk coast.

We started the planning process for our 2015/16 kit back in October 2014 and we have taken on board feedback from supporters and the team here at NCFC. I cannot say much more than that as it is a guarded secret. What I can say is the colour yellow will be involved and feature somewhere!
