ur regular columnists, Steeles Law, have opened the doors to their new city centre offices at Lawrence House, St Andrews Hill – a modern building, set in the picturesque surrounds of the oldest lane in Norwich. Working with award-winning designer Lanassir Lawes of Swank Interiors, Steeles have created a vibrant and welcoming space – something a bit different to the stereotypical solicitors office. Commenting on the move, Head of Marketing Gemma Hoskins said: “We’re all hugely excited by our relocation into the heart of Norwich, where we are best placed to offer our signature accessible and affordable legal advice for you and your business.”

This development is the culmination of a two year Norfolk at the Pictures project to preserve and share Norfolk’s cinema heritage run by Cinema City Ltd – the charity that cares for the cinema site and provides all the education services. During the project they have run lots of workshops and sessions to collect people’s memories about cinema going. The new rooms will have an exhibition about the history of cinema in Norfolk and state of the art screening equipment. They can also be hired for all sorts of meetings and functions. The new Screen Heritage Centre opens at Cinema City in Norwich on 10 September.

THE WHITE SHIRT

The classic white shirt is making a big comeback.

Now this old favourite can be one of many shapes. It could be oversized and long enough to double up as a dress, or fitted and worn tucked in or out, or boxy and kind. If you have the tiniest flicker of a tan, you will look positively glowing, and if it’s dull outside you will feel bright and fresh.

Vanilla talks to Steve Balmer-Walters, Head of Retail at NCFC

L

ast month, Norwich City Football Club launched its new Errea home kit for the 2016-17 Sky Bet Championship season. The kit was launched in all three Canaries Official stores across Norwich, on an Errea bus situated at Carrow Road and on the club’s official online store at shop.canaries.co.uk. And this year the club is calling upon fans to stake claim to its classic colours and ‘Own Yellow’ for the 2016-17 season. Inspired by a mixture of classic kits from City’s heritage, the kit also combines a fresh, modern twist. We caught up with Steve Balmer-Walters, Head of Retail at the club to find out how he came up with this year’s stylish and classic-looking shirt. “This year’s home kit is a

26

combination of historical kits from the Club’s history mixed with a modern flair,” explained Steve. “With the mesh finish on the side of the shirts, shorts and socks, we have really focused this year on producing a lifestyle kit which has a complete look. The kit we’ve created for the 2016-17 season has a modern, stylish and retro feel and I believe the fans will love it as much as we do,” he said. Steve works very closely with Errea, Norwich City’s family-run kit manufacturer, and travels regularly to their Head Office in Italy to ensure that the vision he has for the next shirt is on point. “There is a lot of time that goes into making sure we choose the right fabric for the shirts and there are lots of factors to think

s with all Errea fabrics, Mundial has been awarded the highly prestigious Oeko-Tex 100 certificate. This certificate is awarded by an internationally recognised testing and research agency and guarantees that the fabric (and of course, the finished shirt) is free from any harmful or toxic chemicals. Errea is the only company in the team wear sector to have achieved this important health and ecological certification. “For me, knowing that Errea’s fabrics have been awarded this highly prestigious Oeko-Tex 100 certificate, I know I’m working with the best fabrics in the team wear industry. Mundial fabric is soft to the touch, breathable and has moisture-wicking technology. These features aid the evaporation of sweat and help to regulate body temperature, so are perfect for professional athletes,” explained Steve. Norwich City also launched an away and third kit last month and all three kits have achieved record sales figures.

To ‘Own Yellow’, purchase your shirt for the 2016-17 season from one of the three Canaries Official stores across the city (Carrow Road, Chapelfield and Castle Mall), or on the club’s official retail website at shop.canaries.co.uk.

“Buying at auction can be seen as an exciting prospect as often people can purchase at a reduced price”

‘Need to knows’ about buying a house at auction MY QUESTION: We are looking to buy a property and have found one we are very interested in which is for sale by auction. We know very little about buying a house in this way and feel unsure as to whether it is a sensible idea, or something best avoided. Are you able to offer any advice?

B

uying property at auction can be seen as an exciting prospect but it is important to do your homework before entering the auction room. One advantage of purchasing property at auction is that the process is usually quicker than a standard purchase. On acceptance of the successful bid, the deposit is paid (usually 10% of the purchase price) and completion then typically takes

32

place within 28 days. Another attraction is that often people find they are able to purchase property at a reduced price from the open market value. On the other hand, you need to consider why the property may have been put into auction, rather than on the open market. There can be many reasons why some property is put up for auction, for example, where

property has been repossessed, where the property is in need of substantial repair, or if the seller requires a quick sale. Once you have scoured the property supplements and auction catalogues and you know which property you are interested in, there are a number of important factors that you will need to consider carefully: ● Auction Pack – Contact the

Auctioneer to request the Auction Pack. These are usually available at least two weeks before the auction. The quality of Auction Packs can vary but ideally they should include: the title to the Vanilla August/September 2016

REAL LIVES payable on completion, which is usually 28 days after exchange of contracts. This means that time is of the essence, so if you are funding the purchase by way of a mortgage, you need to ensure that you have a mortgage in principle before attending the auction. The mortgage advance will need to be available in time for completion, or you could face financial penalties. ■

property; a plan of the property; standard searches; auction special conditions of sale; replies to standard enquiries; contract and form of transfer, together with any ancillary documents relating to the property, such as relevant planning permissions. Study the Auction Pack carefully and ask yourself: Is there anything that stands out immediately which could deter you from proceeding?

to be prepared for the fact that although you may incur these costs at the outset, you may not necessarily be the successful bid on the day of the auction. ● Financing the Purchase – Consider how you will finance the deposit and purchase. Usually a deposit will be payable upon the acceptance of successful bid at the auction (10% of the purchase price). The balance is then

● Instruct your Legal Adviser –

We are here to help...

It is a good idea to contact your solicitor as soon as possible, so that they can review the auction pack and report to you in good time before the auction. This will then allow time to investigate anything unusual or onerous which may affect your decision to proceed. ● Inspection – It is important to inspect the property thoroughly before the auction. Ideally, you would do so along with your surveyor so that they can advise you of the state and condition of the property and any structural defects. Many properties are sold at auction because they are in a poor state of repair. If you are aware at the outset that work will need to be undertaken at the property, then it may be prudent to also have a builder view the property to advise you as to the likely cost of any essential works. ● Initial Budget – You will need to consider an initial budget to cover the preliminary costs of going to auction. There are a number of initial costs that you will be responsible for before you have necessarily even placed a bid. These include surveyor’s fees, mortgage application fees and solicitor’s fees. SCHOOLS

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD

O

ne of the biggest decisions you make as a parent is deciding where to enrol your child to school. The limitless questions which arise through the process, knowing which one is best and which one worst, all combining factors to make it a stressful step for all involved. With the overall aim that your child is as happy as can be with the final outcome, the vitality of ensuring they are at the best place for them is key. So what is important when choosing a school? Endless questions can be posed at this stage, all with such a limited time frame to find the answers to. Most of us have been out of the schooling scene for some time, and a lot has changed. So take this chance to sit down with your partner and prioritise what you want for your child from the academic institution which

August/September 2016 Vanilla

you will choose. Are there any schools that family or friends have recommended? How are local schools performing on an academic level? Also think about how your child will be getting to and from school, distance plays a role in the decision process. Headmistress Kirsty von Malaisé says of her school: “At Norwich High School, we believe passionately in putting girls first. We give our girls the very best opportunities to find their strengths. Fostering intellectual curiosity is at the heart of our excellent academic education, which is reinforced by strong pastoral support, diverse enrichment opportunities and an outstanding sport, music, art and drama offer.” VISITS

Whether it be for enrolment in pre-school, junior, primary or

high school, school visits play a key role in the decision making process. These visits allow you to get a real feel for the environment and pose questions such as do you feel welcome, personally and culturally? Are the teachers keen and well informed? And whether or not there is a friendly, open, respectful communication between teachers and children. It is a crucial time to become informed on the facilities in place, as well as school activities available, allowing you to make a judgement on whether your child will be most happy in that environment and whether they will be able to flourish with the opportunities given. Stephen Crump of Hethersett Old Hall School points out, ‘Choosing a school is as much a matter of the heart as the head. If you can’t look back on a visit and feel a warm glow – possibly

35

The Education issue If you can’t look back on a visit and feel a warm glow – possibly wishing that you had had the chance to go to a school like that – keep on looking. wishing that you had had the chance to go to a school like that – keep on looking.’ Remember you can speak to your local authority, get access to local league tables to find out exactly which schools are performing best both academically and within other areas such as sport. THE SHORTLIST

Once you have visited the local schools and got a feel for what each one is like, it is then best to draw up a shortlist, abandoning those you did not warm to and beginning to look deeper into those you admired. At this stage, talking to other families whose children go there can be helpful, giving you first hand advice on the school from both a parent

and child perspective. As well as this, visiting further open days or information evenings can be vital in filling up the last few gaps in knowledge, enabling you to feel more confident and comfortable with where to enrol your child. In recent surveys carried out by Teaching Union it was found that more than half (54%) of parents look online for general information, 49% read the latest inspection report and 53% speak to parents of current pupils. All of this gathered information combines to leave you with a final, well rounded view of each potential school for your child. PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Whether it’s additional languages, earlier morning drop-offs or comprehensive online parent

portals, the sector’s reputation for choice is holding up well, says Janette Wallis, senior editor of the Good Schools Guide. “Analysing the last three years’ exam results will give you valuable academic information, but softer issues regarding school life are vital for making children feel settled,” confirms Wallis. If you are considering boarding, ask current boarders what the food is like and find out what they do at weekends, to find out what school life is like from a pupil themselves. And of course when choosing a private school, fees and value for money have to be taken into account as you are paying for what you can comfortably afford and want to get the most out of it that you can. It is also important to get a feel for how each school is progressing, www.telegraph.co.uk/education/ leaguetables provides accurate league tables in ranking of academic performance. And finally, some wise words for children from Jonathan Taylor, Principal of Wymondham College: “Have big dreams and ambitions. School will prepare you to be resilient and equip you with the grit and determination needed to succeed and overcome the inevitable knock-backs along the way. Positivity attracts positivity – and positive people are generally great to be around.” ■ For more useful information on choosing a school visit www. gettherightschool.co.uk

Small and smart! S

maller cars are in vogue and so is top down motoring. This is all about putting the fun back in what is fast becoming the otherwise stressful pastime of getting around and the SMART Cabrio has “fun” written all over it from the very first glance. The Cabrio is the smallest convertible on the market and for city driving there are few rivals. It has the tiniest of turning circles – meaning nipping in and out of tight spaces is easy – a London cab can’t compete! Its overall size means one can park where others cannot, often to the surprise of other motorists and that can be fun too! The fabric roof has been cleverly designed so when in place one would be hard pressed to know it was not a normal roof but with a push of a button, in twelve seconds, it slides away and hey presto! Topless. And what’s more, that can be

Matching accessories

completed at any driving speed. The rails along which the top runs can also be removed and stored in the boot to provide even more feeling of openness. The folded roof does not intrude into the boot space so the practicality of the Cabrio remains the same as the hard top versions. The boot opening is flat which is a great help in getting bags in and out. Getting in is easy through the large doors and inside there is a surprising amount of space. While very short in length the width is generous meaning there’s plenty of elbow room for two. The interior follows the fun chunky theme of the exterior. Of course, creature comforts are well catered for with cup holders and storage nets to hold the various odds and ends we all have to accommodate. All the instruments are clear and the functions straightforward, as one would expect and of course, top down motoring requires a good sound system... Cousin Hermione will love this one!

FINANCE

IS INHERITANCE TAX JUST FOR THE SUPER-RICH? Matthew Hinchliffe, Financial Adviser at RJL IFA Ltd in Eaton, poses some questions we might want to consider when thinking about inheritance tax (IHT). WHY DO I NEED TO THINK ABOUT IHT?

More and more people are being affected by IHT. Figures from the Office for Budget Responsibility reveal the number of family estates eligible to pay IHT has grown from around 15,000 in 2010 to more than 40,000 this year1 . HM Revenue & Customs expects to receive its highest ever intake of annual IHT receipts – according to the Office for National Statistics, over £4.6 billion was raised for the 2015/16 tax year2. The current Nil Rate Band (NRB) for individuals is £325,000. If your estate is worth more than this, the remainder will be liable to IHT at 40%. The new main residence allowance of £175,000 per person, which applies to estates that include a family home and is due to be phased-in over the next few years, will not benefit everyone. When you consider the rise in house prices over the last five years and the number of

40

properties now worth well above the allowance, it means many more people might be sitting on an IHT liability. Its impact now extends far beyond the super-rich. AM I SLEEPWALKING INTO AN IHT NIGHTMARE?

Despite IHT being in the headlines, research from Octopus Investments, conducted in February this year, found just 14% of people were aware of the current NRB3 . This could indicate that people in general are not aware that their estate could be affected. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS WHEN LOOKING AT ESTATE PLANNING?

Essentially, you can spend it, give it away, put it into trust or invest for IHT relief, all of which options come with their own risks and benefits. The purpose of this article is to look at the option of investing into qualifying smaller companies.

FINANCE

WHAT’S THE ATTRACTION OF INVESTING IN SMALLER COMPANIES?

WHEN’S THE RIGHT TIME TO SEEK FINANCIAL ADVICE?

Depending on the nature of the business, shares in smaller companies are usually competitively priced and have decent growth potential. With all of us living longer and therefore looking forward to many years in retirement, the long-term growth potential of a smaller company investment might be an appropriate choice. It is also possible to hold the shares in an ISA, which of course has its own tax benefits. From an IHT perspective, the major benefit of investing into qualifying smaller companies is that the government currently offers Business Property Relief (BPR) incentives, the purpose of which is to encourage greater investment into small businesses that contribute to UK job creation and economic prosperity. Provided the companies qualify for BPR and the shares are still held on death, the investment becomes IHT-free after two years.

Given the choices now available to us when thinking about IHT, you want to make the best decisions for you and your loved ones. Getting the right advice can make a real difference and when it comes to making far-reaching plans for your family’s future, it’s never too early to take advice. ■ FOOTNOTES:

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF INVESTING IN SMALLER COMPANIES?

It should be remembered that investments into smaller companies generally carry a higher level of risk compared to investments in larger, well-capitalised and familiar companies. In summary, these are sudden and steep movements in share value, difficulty selling shares and company failure. There are rules about what makes a company “qualifying”. If it does not qualify, it is unlikely to provide the tax benefits described herein. In addition, some qualifying companies may be listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), but some may be unlisted. Generally, an unlisted company will be a more risky proposition than a listed company. Finally, it is possible that tax legislation around BPR could change. Of course, no one can predict what impact this might have on investments made and future planning.

BEAUTY

PURE LUXURY EXPERIENCE FACIAL By Nicky Young at Stones of Serenity, Beau Hair and Beauty

la Vanil D&

Nicky Young doesn’t wear shoes whilst treating her clients in her therapy room. It’s a small detail, but just one of the ways this calmly confident, experienced therapist and hot stone massage specialist makes sure she connects with each client: grounding herself, focusing totally on the individual in front of her and creating a quiet, calm atmosphere. This care and commitment is what makes Nicky Young’s Pure Luxury Experience facial stand out. It’s truly a bespoke treatment – at no point do you ever get the feeling that Nicky is simply following a pre-planned recipe as she works with your skin. When I went to see Nicky, in her chilled-out therapy room above Beau Hair and Beauty in Norwich, she talked to me about my skincare regime, allergies, any sensitivities and selected the most appropriate items from the Arbonne Plant Botanical range of products, even blending items as she went along to create a tailormade skincare solution. When I’d made myself comfortable under a heated blanket on Nicky’s treatment

bed, she placed two warm basalt stones under towels beneath my hands and one on top of my stomach. This may sound unusual but they were a real source of comfort. She began with a few minutes of guided meditation, then used Arbonne’s FC5 range (based around fresh cells from five fruits and vegetables) to cleanse my face. However, as this is a bespoke facial, her preferred products vary from person to person. After a refreshing spritz of toner and an exfoliating cell scrub, Nicky concentrated on the skin around my eyes, bringing her massage expertise into play with cold stones. I’ve never experienced cold stones, and the sensation was immediately soothing – think cucumber slices but a million times more intense. She also used the stones

between my eyebrows, which actually seemed to push out stress. Next came a face, neck and shoulder massage with oil chosen specifically for my skin, a hydrating mask and then a properly relaxing scalp massage, concentrating on pressure points. Whilst the mask was on, cold basalt stones were carefully placed on my eyes. The treatment was completed with eye cream, serum and day cream – again all tailored to my skin. After more than an hour, I felt fabulously blissed out and my skin was actually glowing. Nicky’s career has seen her work on celebrities and members of the royal family in some of London’s most exclusive salons. With this facial, she’s bringing a piece of Mayfair glamour to Norwich – it might just be the perfect affordable luxury. REVIEW: IMOGEN LEES

HAIR TRENDS

by Mark Howard, Creative Stylist at John Olivers

One of the best ways to predict upcoming trends in hair is to look at the runways across the fashion world.

In the Autumn/Winter shows last month there was plenty to take inspiration from, as well as one or two surprises! A big upcoming trend is the return of the CRIMP. Used all over to get that 1980s look or just on just a few strands.

For the guys, a big upcoming trend is hair that has been grown out, to the shoulders or beyond. WILD AND LOOSE, we’ll be seeing a lot more of it.

ABOUT BIRTH & BABIES

Antenatal classes that nurse parents along the pathway to parenthood

D

emand is growing for antenatal courses offered by About Birth & Babies, a private service run by highlyqualified teachers, who specialise in giving unbiased, evidence based information and support to expectant parents looking to extend the knowledge provided by their midwife. Attending antenatal classes in small groups gives couples the opportunity to ask questions about labour and birth which are important to them and to increase their confidence about becoming new parents and looking after their newborn baby. About Birth & Babies was established in 2014 by Sian Verney and Ann Roberts, who spotted a niche for affordable, flexible and

lla VaEnPiORT R

bespoke antenatal courses that would meet the needs of busy adults preparing for parenthood. Sian and Ann hold university accredited qualifications in Antenatal Education awarded by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). “Our training and experience form a basis for our About Birth & Babies course content, which is comprehensive, but also led by the group in terms of how long we spend on individual topics and issues,” explained Sian. “What sets us apart is that we can be reactive to the needs of our clients by arranging course dates to suit them, putting on extra courses at short notice, or for smaller groups we can even conduct them at someone’s home.” Courses are run at a variety of venues in Norwich and in Bungay,

Suffolk. As well as Standard Antenatal courses, About Birth & Babies also offer a Free Early Pregnancy Class and special oneto-one courses. “Sometimes it is difficult for people working further afield or on shifts to attend all the sessions on a full course and other clients just prefer to not be part of a group so for them the one-to-one option works better,” said Sian. Since launching their first courses in March last year, the duo have already helped hundreds of prospective parents get ready for one of the most life-changing experiences adults can have. “An important part of what we offer is a two-hour reunion with ourselves and other members of the course, after baby has arrived. The friendships people form through taking part in our classes and meeting up before and after the birth of their babies often last for many years and we like to encourage those friendships since they provide wonderful support for the parents.” ■

HOW TO ‘DO’ VIBRANT COLOUR For a really striking room, you need to use several colours in one space. But you need to make sure to use them in equal measure or they will fight for attention. Red is the most stimulating of colours, team with white on woodwork and ceilings. For a stimulating Enamel room, try sunny yellows, stove top but perhaps avoid in the kettle £29.95 bedroom! You need to be Happiness brave to use bold palettes, Store as they will reflect your personality. To some people, citrus type shades can appear zingy and fun, but to others they might verge on garish. If you’re not brave, use in small rooms like a cloakroom to create a sense of the “wow” factor.

COLOUR CONFIDENCE Want to decorate your home with some big, bold colours but not sure where to start? Emile Azan of Chameleon designs gives us some advice. AVOID A CLASH Bright colours could jar with each other, but a pale grey flooring and a dash of black will ground them. DON’T FORGET THE BLACK This is an old adage in interior design. By adding a black element – say, a black box, lampshade, picture frame or other accent – you clarify and enhance all the other colours in the space. Try it – it really works!

ART FOR ART’S SAKE Polly Miller at The Gallery Norfolk: “If you are at the start of the decorating process then choosing a statement piece of art with bold colour, like the rising star Ruth Bunnewell (pictured above), can then allow you to pick other colours in the room to compliment and show off the picture. Alternatively, should you be working with an existing pallet of colours, a picture can be chosen to compliment an existing décor and at The Gallery Norfolk we have a wide range of original art and limited edition prints with just about every colour of the rainbow”.

atural stone has a certain beauty and elegance all of its own, adding a very special touch of style. Premier Marble, in Rackheath, Norwich, has been helping both residential and commercial customers throughout East Anglia and beyond to achieve the natural stone look since 1991. What sets them apart is their handson service, and a team of experts who certainly know their stuff! Director Mike Hansell says: “What we offer here is a bespoke service, the widest range of natural marble, granite and slate available, coupled with expert knowledge and service. We can design, build and install anything from a new fireplace, kitchen work surface, a new bath, shower or wet-room, to a beautiful natural floor. “We also do surrounds for gas and electric fires, wood burners and multifuel stoves, and commercial projects such as shop fronts, offices, hotels and leisure complexes. There really is no limit to how and where you can use natural stone, but it needs careful design, and handling. “It’s important for us to work very closely with customers to turn their ideas and dreams into reality.

Sometimes they have the design prepared, but we have a design service here, so we can advise on the layout of the space, and the best stone to select for colour and texture. We then manufacture it here, and install it on site, so it’s a complete service from start to finish – everything is taken care of. “We also take great pride in the quality of the natural materials we use. The stone is sourced from all over the world; marble from Italy of course – because it’s the best quality, a classic. But we also source from the UK, India, anywhere, but quality is the key and we never compromise on that.”

T

he skill of the craftsmen at Premier Marble is something Mike is very proud of. “This is what makes us unique. Working with stone is a dying art, and not many can offer this any more. We use the latest technology alongside more traditional hand-crafting methods to work the materials and produce a beautiful finish. We love the way natural stone can bring warmth and life to a space, it never goes out of style.” So if you want to bring gorgeous natural stone into your home or work space, give Mike and his team a call on 01603 721995, or go to www.premiermarble.co.uk.

looking at the benefits of

MADE TO MEASURE When it comes to soft furnishings the choice between ready-made and made-to-measure more often than not our choice comes down to price, but is this perhaps a false economy?

W

e all know how costly it can be when it comes to furnishing your home. Although ready-made soft furnishings are quick and easy to purchase and put up, it seems there is a compromise to be had. Cindy Gidney from Anglian Furnishing Fabrics reminds us, “Most ready-made curtains are factory produced in set sizes with very little fullness allowance, poor ‘budget’ linings and are machine finished for quickness. “Bespoke curtains allow you to be part of the whole design process. Why spoil the room you have just decorated with off the peg products that don’t fit the window, in a fabric you are not 100% happy with? “Sizes can be tailored to fit your own window, which means your window will look properly dressed. We also discuss tracks, poles and which option would be best for your desired look. “Bespoke curtains are an investment as they last longer, can reduce heat loss from draughty windows, reduce noise and light and protect your furnishings from the sun. Anglian Furnishing Fabrics curtains are made in our own workroom using hand finished methods, so we can guarantee the superior quality.” adds Cindy.

August/September 2016 Vanilla

The same seems to go for blinds too. Ready made blinds are manufactured in bulk, making them cheaper but they come in just a few standard sizes. The problem is that windows come in a whole variety of shapes and sizes! The chances are that those bargain blinds will never fit your windows well.

P

erhaps the biggest Cindy Gidney at Anglian Furnishing Fabrics benefit of going bespoke comes from being able to put your own stamp on the design. Colour should be joyful!

BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS

9. Using colour

Using colour in your home can be a bit nerve wracking – it can be quite a statement. But colour is everywhere and can make a room go from boring to brilliant in a flash.

Gorgeous Maio wallpaper print from Manuel Canovas

● If you’ve got a fairly neutral palette then you

are free to bring in any colour you fancy really. If you have a colour theme already then you’ll need to be a bit more choosy. You could just go with stronger versions of the colours you have or add a complimentary clashing splash of something. For instance if you have duck eggs and cool blues then a bright fuchsia will look amazing or even a deep rich red. ● A beautiful bespoke headboard in a bold colour will make an impression in any bedroom – have fun with the details and use contrast colours for buttons or piping. Or just lovely bright cushions in an otherwise plain room will instantly lift it and can be changed at any moment to suit your moods. ● Or go mad with a multi colour wallpaper which will allow you to change the scheme around it depending on which colour you want to pick out. Manuel Canovas have some gorgeous new prints at the moment which are super bright. These types of prints can look great in a tiny cloakroom or alcove as a little surprise when you walk in. ● Colour isn’t just about fun it should be joyful and enhance the space you are in, so don’t be frightened to indulge yourself!

Use contrast colours and have fun with the details

ELL I never… I thought I had my local eateries sussed, but there’s one I wasn’t familiar with at all. Nestled in charming Middleton Street, Wymondham, is the equally charming Number Twenty Four Restaurant. The Griffins opened it in 2002, Jonathan as chef and Isobel working alongside him in the kitchen. Karen, with them since the launch, works the restaurant with Marcus, her more than able assistant, making the top-class service look effortless. It was a Tuesday evening and the place was buzzing, as well as having three birthday parties in full swing. Everyone was having a super time and tables were joshing with one another – a really fun atmosphere. The menu is a set-price £27.50, sometimes with supplements on certain dishes, tonight on the seared fillet of beef. The menu really does have something for everyone, with today’s vegetarian option a twicebaked cheese soufflé, and wonderful accompaniments.

We had a super glass of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Rio Alto, perfect on this summer’s evening with a pre-starter of melon, strawberry and elderflower sorbet. For starter I had a Tower of Cromer Crab with a sweet chilli dressing and Parmesan crisp –crab is up there with my all-time favourite things to eat. Mon amie chose the salt beef brisket flavoured with wasabi, pickled ginger, balsamic beetroot, spring onion salad. I have to say both were simply delicious. For main course I had the sauté breast of duck with apple and spring onion on chilli soy red cabbage with crispy polenta. Mon amie chose roasted rump of lamb on bubble and squeak, oyster mushroom, roasted shallot, Madeira, minted gravy, crispy pancetta. Both dishes were a taste sensation. For this course we drank another Rio Alto from Chile, this time a Merlot, very quaffable. A small interlude ensued where we chatted with other diners, all of whom had been there several times and declared it their favourite place to

Vanilla August/September 2016

eat. They talked too about the super Sunday lunch at Number Twenty Four, again a set menu and price which includes roasts of sirloin of beef, corn-fed chicken and belly pork. Their usual fayre is also served for those who choose not to have the traditional Sunday experience. The Sunday lunch set menu is £16.95 for two courses, £18.95 for three.

N

ow to dessert… It was apparent that many fellow diners were opting for summer pudding. I fancied cheese. So on our table we went for both. And what a wonderful thing their summer pudding is! All desserts are home made here, and I could kick myself for not asking for the recipe (although it’s probably a house secret). The cheese board was very good too. All the food is sourced locally and seasonally, and as with the wines, carefully and seriously. It’s a dining experience to savour and doesn’t disappoint at any level. To say the menu made my mouth water would be an understatement. The food and service are exemplary, and extremely good value for money. I can’t imagine why I haven’t been before. But I’ll be back, and soon.

DOMAINE LA ROUVIOLE MINERVOIS LA LIVINIÈRE £19.50 at The Library

aving been married to a chef for over 25 years I often get asked, who cooks at home (me day to day) when we have dinner guests Nigel certainly wants to cook . After a long shift in the kitchen what does a chef rustle up late at night? Well, to be honest not a lot of cooking goes on in our house, it’s much more likely to be piles of biscuits, fruit, sweets or chocolate and that’s Nigel done. Now in all fairness, when there is a day off and he has time, we do eat very well, making an amazing meal often with just a few simple ingredients. My job is to make sure a beautifully chilled bottle of white is ready or maybe a seductive rich red to go with a barbequed leg of lamb or Sunday roast. Two home favourites at the moment are a stunning White, Fiano Di Avellino from Campania, Southern Italy – perfect with chicken, fish or salads – from top producers Feudi Di San Gregorio. And for Red, from Languedoc, Domaine la Rouviole Minervois La Livinière. Made from hand-harvested organic grapes, it’s a blend of Syrah Grenache Cinsault and Carigan with flavours of rich dark fruits, notes of spices and liquorice, combined with a smooth lasting finish, packing a punch at 14.5%. In short a perfect way to end a long hard week’s cheffing!

NIGEL RAFFLES THE LIBRARY Nigel was brought up in North London where he lived until his early twenties. He was heavily influenced by his mother, who was a domestic science teacher and an avid cook – the only person he knew that made Battenberg cakes from scratch and homemade jelly from calves feet! He went to Westminster College where he achieved a distinction in his chef diploma and went to work at the Intercontinental in Park Lane followed by work at the Gavroche working with chefs such as Marco Pierre White, Paul Rankin, Gordon Ramsay and Albert Roux. Feeling jaded after so much intense work, Nigel moved to Suffolk to work at Hintlesham Hall Hotel. Here he met his future wife and they set up their first restaurant, St Benedicts in Norwich, in 1991.

What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

I always have smoked paprika, fennel seeds, chilli flakes, Maldon sea salt, a good sourdough, smoked streaky bacon in the fridge and some nice cheese! What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

After a hard day in the kitchen I don’t have much of an appetite.

76

“I like cooking, any cooking, but as I’ve got older I find I don’t enjoy the fiddley stuff as much”

I tend to graze through the day and have some fresh fruit when I get home – maybe a sandwich, definitely some sugary things like biscuits or sweets.

giant cous cous and gluten free ingredients, like quinoa.

What type of cooking do you enjoy cooking the most?

Toombs Butchers, in Norwich are extremely good, as well as my wild mushroom man that I’ve been using for around 25 years. Though Norfolk cheese is amazing, I’ve also found an unpasteurised creamy, white bloomy-rind cheese from Suffolk, called Baron Bigod, which is fabulous.

I like cooking, any cooking, but as I’ve got older I find I don’t enjoy the fiddley stuff as much. I enjoy slow cooking. My favourite fish dish is pan-fried hake with French style peas (my mum’s are amazing) with mash. What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

I think Middle Eastern cookery has a way to go yet – pomegranate freekeh, dried fruit,

Norfolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?

aving lived in the Golden Triangle for many years, I had grown accustomed to the familiar sight of the cobblers on the corner of Park Lane, one of those old-fashioned businesses that seemed like it would be there forever.. but change was afoot! In its place, appeared an intriguing shop called Arts Desire selling gifts and homewares with its very own craft lounge and café. Earlier this year the shop underwent a refurbishment to accommodate a contemporary front of house cafe and the menu was extended. Arts Desire is a welcoming, light, open space. Walking in, I am greeted by the distinct aroma of freshly ground coffee and fragrant teas. I never used to be a coffee drinker but here they serve a deliciously smooth South East Indian blend of barista coffee. I often opt for a frothy cappuccino or a steamy latte but there’s an extensive choice

80

OPENING HOURS: Tues-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm

including Americano, flat white, mochaccino and expresso. Or there are a selection of teas including Earl or Lady Grey, English Breakfast plus speciality herbal and green teas served in beautiful mixed vintage china teapots, cups and saucers. There is an irresistible selection of cakes too, including traditional Victoria sponge, zesty lemon drizzle, moist carrot cake, classic coffee and walnut and a truly indulgent chocolate loaf (my personal favourite) as well as delicious butterfly cakes that just melt in the mouth! Breakfast bites are available too at only £1.95. If you have more time, try the light lunchtime platters served between noon and 2pm. Choose from a charcuterie style meat platter with cured ham, salami and mild Italian prosciutto or a delicious cheese platter with French Camembert, Brie, mature English Cheddar and British goats cheese all served with crusty bread and butter, peppery wild

rocket salad, baby plum tomatoes and a selection of juicy olives and pickles. I shared a mixed platter and it was delicious. Alternatively, there is fresh hummus served with olives, salad, balsamic olive oil and dipping breads. All are served on slate boards with rustic vintage cutlery, a delightful special touch. Platters start from £4.95 each. There is plenty of seating. I love drinking my coffee sitting on the modern window stools where I can relax, read or use my iPad (there’s free wi-fi here!) or just watch the world go by outside. If you prefer, there are small café style tables or larger wooden tables. In dry weather the lovely outside courtyard is also open for an al fresco experience. All in all, this is a unique place to visit, offering good oldfashioned service with a smile, right here on our doorstep, in the heart of the Golden Triangle! REVIEW: ANJANA CAMPBELL

Starting out on your gluten free journey…

Vegetarian and vegan food served in the lovely village of Trowse, just outside Norwich...

BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd.

When you’ve just found out that you are gluten intolerant or Coeliac then every eating experience seems like a big deal, as everything seems to contain it, but there’s no need to worry you will soon learn to navigate your way around the dinner table.

SPECIAL OFFER!

Free bottle of house wine with two evening main meals*

● Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye – these ingredients are included in the 14 main food allergens list, which means by law these have to be highlighted in bold on all food labels.

*Bring this advert with you. See website for full T&Cs. Offer available tuesday-thursday until 31.10.16

● Go back to basics, it may take a little while to adjust to your new lifestyle but the key to this is to make as much food as possible yourself from scratch – rice, buckwheat and potatoes are all naturally gluten free and can be used in most meals for your carbohydrate fix. ● The next thing to do is find new ‘go to’ sauces, gravies, yoghurts and prepared meats etc. Wheat flour is used so often as a thickener or bulking agent, but there are lots of alternatives out there now. ● According to UK law, for a food to be labelled gluten free it has to contain less than 20ppm of gluten – this is deemed safe for Coeliacs’ according to Coeliac UK; watch out for their ‘crossed grain’ symbol on food packaging. There is lots more info on their website coeliac.org.uk ● Cross-contamination is also a major issue, so watch out for people serving you a gluten free option with the same tongs as the regular option. Even a crumb or airborne flour can make you poorly, so make sure you use clean utensils and boards too. ● Good gluten free flour can be used just as normal flour to bake cakes, just add a bit more liquid or a handful of almonds, and you can even make yorkshire puddings and sauces with cornflour; there’s really no need for fancy mixes.

T

he Olive Tree, in North Walsham is a real hidden gem, situated right in the middle of a holiday park. But don’t let that fool you, this is a stylish, award-winning restaurant and it deserves every accolade. With a fashionable, modern interior, Mediterranean-style outside terrace for drinks and al fresco dining, plus a heated swimming pool! The menu is Modern British, featuring only the best local and seasonal ingredients ,and the a la carte menu offers diners plenty of tempting choices. Starters include battered tiger prawns, with pickled vegetables and lime sweet chilli sauce; chicken and bacon crispy halloumi, soup, olives and sharing platters. I chose the smoked haddock gratin, with tomato concass, spinach crème fraiche and homemade bread. Delicious, cheesy and creamy, it was

84

beautifully presented – as were all the dishes – on a simple wooden board, with a lemon cut into an intriguing geometric shape that made squeezing so much easier… genius! My partner opted for a chicken and chorizo terrine, with mixed leaves, red onion marmalade and granary toast. Between yummy noises and head nodding, I managed to establish that it was equally delicious, meaty, very well seasoned, with a special thumbs up for the onion marmalade. The wine list is simple but cosmopolitan, from all over the world, with a very useful section that recommends wines to drink with specific foods. My partner chose a Torre Aldea Rioja, a beefy, full bodied wine, to accompany his steak. The steak – an 8oz sirloin with flat mushrooms, vine cherry tomatoes and hand cut chips was a glorious-looking masterpiece. It was as delicious as it was goodlooking, moist, tender, without fault, and a marvellous creamy peppercorn sauce. I chose the hot smoked salmon, crayfish and samphire linguini, with cream and parmesan. This was a celebration of all that’s

good about food on the Norfolk coast, and it pulsated with moist, flavoursome fish. Each mouthful was a delight. Desserts offered chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding and ice creams, but I chose something light, a lemon posset. Light, frothy, zinging with lemon, with tart yet sweet compote and the most sinfully buttery homemade shortbread. My parter finished with a trio of cheese board (Brie, Cheddar and Binham Blue). Another great dish, and there must be a real artist in the kitchen, because it in-cluded an apple carved into a swan! What a great place – stylish, superb food, great service from Beth and her team – and probably the best loos is North Walsham! Come here as soon as you can. REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

Keeping it local! BY KEITH CHARLISH The Paddocks Butchery and Deli Supermarkets may be the first port of call for convenience shopping, but an increasing number of discerning shoppers have turned back to the independent butcher. Trust, quality, personal service, a caring attitude and fully traceable meats are some of the reasons. That’s why farm shops have emerged as the place to buy locally produced and sourced goods.

At The Paddocks Butchery and Deli we have established a top quality butchery within the Paddocks farm shop in Mulbarton, Norfolk, selling quality meat and goods. As the owner of the business, I have over 30 years in the trade and know our customers demand the highest quality and standards not only of the product, but also in hygiene. One of the positive things that has developed following various recent food scares, has been the need for documented traceability. It is now a legal requirement for all butchers and other food businesses to know the exact origin of the food they are selling. In addition to the legal requirement, most progressive companies have moved to a documented procedure which allows them to trace and follow the supply of ingredients through all stages of production, processing and distribution.

Absurd Person Singular By Alan Ayckbourn

This is Ayckbourn’s most successful play, breaking attendance records and being revived more than any of his other plays. Take three couples from three classes of society, mix together at three parties at three successive Christmases. Stir in a few misunderstandings and some confusion, and you have a recipe for a very funny, often hilariously side-splitting comedy. However, this play represents a turning point in Ayckbourn’s writing career in that darker, disturbing undertones develop, touching on the ruthless, self-motivated quest for wealth and the ups and downs of the social ladder. £8-£12 www.maddermarket.co.uk

Stephen Crump Headmaster, Hethersett Old Hall School

My City Life

of one’s pupils and their families is a rare privilege and helps foster a sense of belonging. A few years ago we opened a nursery to take three year olds. This has been a great success and has already doubled in size. We expect exciting developments ahead but we will never lose our sense of family-like community.

What do you love most about Norwich? I always tell new families moving into the area that they have a lot to look forward to! Norwich is a buzzing place, with a rich cultural, sporting and artistic life. It is a safe city and very family-friendly – big enough for variety but not vast and impersonal.

What would you recommend doing in the city? When Stephen Crump took up the reins as Headmaster in 2008, it was, in his words, ‘quite a difficult time economically for independent schools. Since then, the recession has retreated, and Hethersett Old Hall is a thriving, sought-after school. Stephen lives in a house on site with his wife Lindsay - they have four children.

What inspired you to go into education? Unlike many teachers, I have worked outside education. I spent three years after A levels working for boat builders and construction firms before deciding to apply to university. A higher

degree followed and it was as a postgraduate that I decided that I would like to share my love of my subject with others. I enrolled on a PGCE course at the University of Sussex which gave me the chance to see if I could hack it in the classroom. I could, and a third of a century later, here I am, running the show.

What drew you to the school and what ambitions do you have for it? Having spent time on my teaching practice in what was one of the biggest secondary schools in western Europe, I value the sense of community a small school gives. To be able to get to know all

My daughter’s American in-laws loved the history – a tour of the major sites is a must if you are that way inclined. It is also literally a very green city and I never tire of walks around its open spaces and along the river – no urban claustrophobia here!

What do you do to relax? I love theatre and we are well served here in Norwich, with Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds not too far away. I am also one of those awful middle-aged men in Lycra at weekends , as I take to the country lanes on my road bike.

If you had £1 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? Carefully. n
