The off-the-shoulder trend continues to be a key shape for this season. Perfect for warm summer days, wear it as a dress, tailored shirt or classic Breton top to immediately update your outfit.
Race days, weddings and the Royal Norfolk Show are occasions when you can really go to town with headwear. Fascinators accessorise a formal outfit perfectly, but if you’re going for a more relaxed look, then a wide brimmed; seventies inspired hat will make a fabulous style statement. And also keep you cool.

30 MAY HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND
Part of the great appeal lies in their set list, which is as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name. With influences as much from the world of contemporary rock and electronica as from jazz and global brass, they stand out in a music landscape increasingly populated by brass bands. A New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and two drummers, and a name which pays homage to the British brass heritage demonstrate that Hackney Colliery Band are rooted in tradition, yet sound thoroughly modern.

Directed by Pip Sessions Based on the hit film ‘Ladies in Lavender’ this play is an evocative and poignant tale of unfulfilled dreams and unrequited love, set in picturesque Cornwall in the 1930s. Starring Becky Sweet and Dot Binns (pictured above).

“Unfortunately, there is no protection for cohabitants as such and no law on which you can rely”
Am I entitled to half of the property I share with my partner? MY QUESTION: I have lived with my partner for the past four years in his bungalow, which he has owned for the last 10 years. We have a two year old child together. Recently we have not been getting on and my partner has asked me to move out. Am I right in assuming that as we have lived together for more than six months, I am his common law wife and am entitled to receive 50% of the property?
30
N
O, UNFORTUNATELY you would not be entitled to automatically receive a share of your partner’s property. This is due to the fact that there is no such thing as a common law husband or wife. As you and your partner have not married and the property is owned in his sole name, you are not entitled to make a financial claim against your partner’s property. If you had married, then you would be entitled to
make a financial claim under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. Whilst there have been proposals for cohabitation law in England and Wales, at the moment there is no protection for cohabitants as such and no law on which you can rely. You may be entitled to make a claim under trust law if you have made significant contributions towards the property. For example, this would apply if you Vanilla June/July 2016
REAL LIVES
have paid for an extension or conservatory, or contributed large expense towards any other home improvement. Whilst the claim may be able to be made under trust law, this can be complicated.
A
S YOU have a child together, you may be entitled to make a claim under Schedule 1 of the Children Act. The purpose of this type of claim would be in order to house the child (and you) and therefore, the ultimate result would be to provide housing as a temporary measure until the child reaches adulthood. However, please note that this type of application would only be relevant in some circumstances and certainly not all. Unfortunately you find yourself in a very vulnerable position and you may have to rely on your partner’s good nature and hope that you can reach an agreement between the two of you. In order to prevent this situation arising, couples can and should consider having a cohabitation agreement drawn up to confirm their intentions at the outset. Whilst on this subject, it is worthy of note that if a couple live together and are not married and if one party dies and does not have a Will in place at the time of their death, the surviving partner would have no automatic right to a share in the other’s estate. Many people in cohabiting relationships are also unaware of this.
June/July 2016 Vanilla
OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER... A recent case, which hit the headlines, highlights the importance of cohabitees putting their affairs in order:
69 year old Joy Williams won the right to receive her deceased partner Norman’s share of their home. This was despite the fact that Norman was actually
married to someone else (Maureen) and had not updated his Will. Had Joy not been successful in her legal challenge – which of course cost time, money and worry – Norman’s estranged wife would have been able to sell and profit from his share of the home. n

SUMMER LINE-UP OF FUN-FILLED EVENTS
AT FA I R H AV E N
If you are looking for somewhere to visit this summer, then Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden provides everything you need for a relaxing, fun and interesting day out.
L
OCATED just nine miles east of Norwich, at South Walsham, visitors can escape the rat race at this haven of peace and tranquillity, where you can stop and smell the fragrance from a huge variety of glorious flowers. A walk around the fabulous gardens and ancient woodland coupled with a few hours messing about on the water would in itself make for a wonderful time. However, Fairhaven, which annually attracts up to 35,000 visitors, also stages a range of events throughout the year aimed at attracting people of all ages. Manager’s assistant Georgina Angel said: “We try to offer something for everyone. For example, our live music shows appeal to the older generations, while we do lots of fun activities for families.” June/July 2016 Vanilla
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
The extensive events line-up for this summer includes guided canoe trails, ghost walks, live jazz and an outdoor theatre production: The Pantaloons’ Gulliver’s Travels. For the past decade or so, the highlight of the summer season has been the annual Green Festival which has grown increasingly popular with visitors. Fairhaven has won numerous awards for its environmentally friendly policies and the festival is an opportunity for owner, the Fairhaven Garden Trust, to spotlight the importance of conservation and sustainability. “The Green Festival is popular and usually attracts between 400 and 500 people on the day,” explained Georgina. “The main focus is environmental and we team up with organisations

sourced from around the world. They include gunnera, a giant rhubarb-like plant all the way from South America, colourful candelabra primula from the Himalayas and the beautiful but not so sweet-smelling skunk cabbage,
we often partner such as the RSPB and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust who attend.” “We try to do everything here in a sustainable way. We use rainwater harvesters for watering the plants sales and flushing the toilets, and have installed solar panels and a ground source heat pump too,” she added. GLOBAL NATURE
The gardens at Fairhaven’s 130-acre site, with its private broad, were created by Major Henry Broughton, who bought the estate in 1946 and later became the second Lord Fairhaven. A keen horticulturist, he worked alongside a team of gardeners to transform the estate into the stunning landscape it is today. It is home to a plethora of plants, animals, insects and butterflies, but is particularly well known for some of the more exotic plants Lord Fairhaven
also from the Americas. Taking a stroll around the estate naturally works up a thirst, and there is no better place to quench it then in the Kingfisher café, where you can pop in for a delicious cream tea or homemade meal. “The tea shop is very popular with visitors and local people who call in regularly because you don’t need to pay the garden entry fee to use the café or the gift shop,” said Georgina.

WORK
IN THE WORKPLACE
D
ID YOU KNOW that 62% of the entire adult population are on Facebook? Every 60 seconds on Facebook: 510 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded. These are just a few astonishing statistics about the world’s most popular social media forum, and go some way to explaining the significant problems employers are having to tackle every day as a result of their employees’ use of social media. We receive so many calls from our clients wanting advice about social media related incidents. It always surprises me how badly informed employees can be regarding the use of their Facebook account and how unprepared their employers are to deal with such matters. Last week we received a telephone call from a client saying that an employee had called in sick
that day but had then posted photographs on their Facebook wall of themselves on Southwold beach (looking gorgeous by the way!). This was followed shortly by another employee who had made derogatory and damaging comments on their wall regarding specific members of management and the company itself. This plus the issue of employees logging on to social media sites during the working day, complaints of bullying and harassment over social media forums and former employees publically defaming the company. The list is never-ending and, whilst some examples are hilarious, it is our job to help advise employers on how to tackle these problems.
P
REVENTION is better than cure. It’s advisable for all employers to implement a robust Social Media Policy within their Staff Handbook.
Training staff on what is and isn’t acceptable with the use of social media on company computers and mobile phones and personal laptops and phones is also recommended. The Social Media Policy should prohibit employees from making derogatory, offensive or damaging comments about your business, employees, clients etc on any social media site, regardless of whether or not it happens during work hours or not. Any breach of the policy should be clearly set out as a disciplinary offence. Employees need to remember that all social media leaves a trail. Venting your frustrations on any form of social media is not a good idea, however bad the day has been. Likewise, what you thought was hilarious whilst drunk at university, may be looked at by future employers. Ringing in sick on a glorious sunny day is a nono. You may be found out! n

PENSION FREEDOM: A LICENCE TO SPEND?
N
EW RULES surrounding access to pensions were introduced last year in April 2015 and bring a world of new opportunities to those approaching retirement. RJL’s Simon Kiley looks at some of the factors to bear in mind. For many people, their pension savings are amongst the most valuable assets they own, but until April last year there were strict rules controlling withdrawals from pension funds. Since April 2015, many of these restrictions have been lifted giving the vast majority of people the power to withdraw as much of their fund as they wish, provided they have reached the minimum retirement age – currently age 55. However, this shouldn’t be a measure that gives everyone carte blanche to just spend, spend, spend. There are a number of very good reasons why your pension savings may be much better off being left where they are. Firstly, only 25 per cent of your pension fund can be withdrawn free of tax. Any further sums withdrawn will be taxed as income. In practice this means that you would be paying at least 20 per
36
cent of your withdrawal straight back to the Treasury – and for higher and additional rate taxpayers, 40 or 45 per cent. The second, and perhaps most important, factor to bear in mind is that your pension savings are there to provide for your retirement. Withdraw them now and you may find yourself unable to maintain your required living standards later on. It’s worth noting that the Government has warned that anyone who has deliberately emptied their pension pot is unlikely to qualify for additional pension benefits when money is short. The last point worthy of consideration is Inheritance Tax. Growth in house and asset prices over recent years mean that many will find themselves in a position where their estate exceeds the Inheritance Tax nil rate band. The new “£1m Nil Rate Band for married couples” which you may have seen in the headlines, is delayed until 2017 and is being phased in so that before 2020 the full additional allowance will not be available. Even then it will be subject to specific rules regarding whom property may be passed to in order to qualify.
Vanilla June/July 2016
FINANCE
P
ENSION DRAWDOWN plans however have been given an immediate boost, with a significant drop in tax on death benefits. Drawdown plans are not subject to Inheritance Tax and while they may be subject to tax on death this is no longer at a rate of 55% on the full fund value on death, as was previously the case. For those wishing to pass a Drawdown plan on, the rules are as follows: – If you die over the age of 75, the level of tax due depends on who receives it. Any withdrawals are effectively added to their income to determine the level of tax payable – If you die under the age of 75 with total pension savings below £1m this tax year (the “standard lifetime allowance”), your pension pot can go to your chosen beneficiaries as an income or a lump sum free from all taxes – If you die under the age of 75 with total pension savings above £1m, a lifetime allowance tax charge could be payable on the excess (25% if taken as income; 55% if taken as a lump sum). If you do have more than £1m saved, or you think that your funds might exceed £1m in future, you could consider taking out a form of “pension protection” now, which entitles you to a higher lifetime allowance. With Inheritance Tax at 40%, leaving a residual pension pot to a Non-Taxpayer or Basic Rate Taxpayer could mean a significant tax saving, when compared to passing the same amount on in cash or assets held outside of a pension.
Some questions to consider: ● Do you have current pension provision? ● When did you last review it? ● Do you know how many pension pots you
have? ● How much they will be worth come
retirement? ● Would Pension Drawdown be a suitable
option for you? ● What happens to your pension pot in the
event of your death?
Please note that this article is not intended to be used as advice. If you are considering setting up a pension arrangement, retirement planning or making changes to the pension that you already have, please speak to us or another qualified financial adviser. With pensions, the value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested.
P
roperly managed, pensions can provide a valuable investment and for many it makes absolute sense to leave pension savings in their tax-efficient wrapper until they need them to provide retirement income. Review them regularly to ensure that they are performing as required, but take advice before making large withdrawals. With some pension schemes, such as those in the public sector, the new rules don’t apply, or the fund must be transferred before access can be gained. It’s critical to get advice prior to making any transfer, to ensure that you are not giving up valuable benefits. n

The cultured, feminine perspective on automobiles of the day
Go topless in style A
car without a roof is not a new idea; they started that way when motoring was in its infancy. A roof was a new addition to the horseless carriage. Now a car with the roof down tends to turn heads, and the wow factor is evident on the faces of onlookers. Britain has one of the highest proportions of open-top cars of any world market. We are often heard to complain about how poor our weather is, but actually there are plenty of days when it is just right. In fact, one of the reasons why our Continental cousins don’t buy as many is that for them it is often too hot to go convertible. Having the top down changes the driving experience considerably; a new perspective of the surroundings, the sounds, the smells – all so different! For some it gives an air of status, others just love the fun of the open air and a breeze through the hair, and then again if at the wheel of a MercedesBenz there is the satisfaction of driving a quite fantastic product. If you’re going to go topless, it needs to be done with style, and in a Mercedes-Benz, style is intrinsic. Sometimes, of course, the June/July 2016 Vanilla
roof needs to be in place. Long gone are the old flapping, noisy tops, dripping water in at every turn. No, the Mercedes-Benz designers have seen to that. Roof up to roof down or the other way is a breeze, switch operated and so quick! A few seconds and all is done. Mercedes-Benz has a range of cabriolets and roadster cars, and right now the models to be seen in are the SLC and S-Class Cabriolet. Or of course there’s the super-fun smart. Each has its own innovations, features and benefits, such as a warm “airscarf” to provide heating from the top of the seat, wind
Roadsters rule OK: The MercedesBenz SLC (top) S-Class Cabriolet (left) and smart Cabrio (right)
deflectors to minimise noise and buffeting, and all the safety features and latest technology one would expect from a world-class manufacturer. But the best way to appreciate all this is by talking with a skilled, knowledgeable sales person, such as one finds at MercedesBenz of Norwich. PARTY NIGHT!
Take That Tribute Night at Holiday Inn Norwich North
T
O BE HONEST it’s been a while since I’ve donned my party shoes - the sort of functions I seem to get invited to these days are more sedate affairs. But I fancied a good old fashioned fun night out and so, on recommendation, booked in for a Party Night at Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn Norwich North is infamous for its Lancaster Ballroom and the fantastic events that are held at the hotel. A recent refurbishment also included a state of the art light show, making each event a unique experience. We were game for anything but decided on the ‘Take This – Take That’ Night, which would include a three-course dinner and an evening being entertainment by a four-piece tribute band, Take This, a group of experienced West End singers who ‘embrace the total Take That experience’. We were told to be prepared to dance and sing the night away with a full
40
evening of hits from Relight My Fire, Pray, to The Flood and Could it be magic? So once I’d got over “what an earth do I wear to a Take That night”, my best mate and I made our way to the Lancaster ballroom for a night of revelry.
T
HERE WAS plenty of good spirits about on the night – these Holiday Inn events pull in a faithful following of all different age groups as well as those celebrating big birthdays (given the Take That theme, there were a couple of Big 4-0s in for the night) and it was clear that a good time was expected by all. The event was a sell-out, and the tasty meal was served with military precision. No sooner had the dessert been cleared away and the dance floor was full. Disco gave way to the main act at about 9pm and the fabulous tribute band couldn’t have been
given a better welcome than if they were the real Take That! Adoring fans played along and treated the talented lads as worldfamous pop stars and in return the band performed brilliantly. As out-of-towners we had to leave at midnight but the party was still in full swing. What a night of fun it was and at £29.95 a head well worth it. These nights are known to sell out fast so be quick to book yours. There are still some places left for the Dirty Dancing v Summer Night (16th July) and Dine & Disco (22nd July). Also the boys are back as The West End Jersey Boys on Friday 14th October and for the Take That v Boyz Bands Tribute in the new year n For more information on events and party nights at Holiday Inn download their guide www. hinorwich.com/events-andfunctions/

FRIENDS PREGNANT BUT YOU’RE STILL WAITING? Friends seemed to get pregnant so easily, even ‘by accident’,” recalls Katherine Smith, from Norwich. “We had been trying for a baby for some time and it had got to the point where it was really difficult to see other people with babies. Special occasions also became difficult. Every birthday was a reminder of being another year older and still not where I wanted to be.” If everyone around you seems to be getting pregnant easily and you’ve been trying for a while with no success then it might be time to consider your fertility options. Dr Thanos Papathanasiou is Lead Clinician at Bourn Hall Clinic Norwich, which is a full service fertility clinic that sees both NHS-funded and selffunded patients. He explains: “More than 80% of couples will conceive naturally within 12 months of trying for a baby. So if you’re not pregnant after a year of trying, you may wish to consider initiating some testing, especially if you are a woman aged over 30.” Fertility testing can reveal why you are not getting pregnant. For example blood tests and scans showed that Katherine had Polycystic Ovarian
Syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects about one in every twelve women. Tiny, harmless cysts develop in the ovaries and they are unable to release eggs regularly (ovulate). Dr Papathanasiou says: “Many women have ovulation problems which can be detected within a fertility check and often they go on to achieve a pregnancy with just a simple drug treatment. We do recommend, however, that both partners are checked. For men, a semen analysis will reveal if the sperm is healthy by looking not just at quantity but also the shape and motility. If simple drugs do not work, fertility treatments such as IVF or IUI (insemination) may be required.” After they received their results, the Smith’s were referred for IVF treatment. They were given a choice of clinics and they chose Bourn Hall Norwich, which is based at Wymondham. Katherine says: “We were very impressed by the Clinic; the staff explained everything thoroughly and we felt comfortable there.” After an initial consultation an individualised treatment plan was agreed and Katherine started

a course of drugs to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs, ready for egg collection. After collection the eggs are fertilised with sperm and the resulting embryos transferred to the uterus. This is usually done when the embryo is five days old when it has reached the blastocyst stage. This process is very carefully monitored and requires many short appointments for blood tests and scans as the treatment is tailored to the individual. To make this more convenient for patients, Bourn Hall has opened a second Norfolk clinic at King’s Lynn. Although the patients can attend either clinic for consultancy, fertility testing and treatment, the specialist egg collection and embryo transfer happens at the clinic in Wymondham. Two weeks after her embryo transfer Katherine took a pregnancy test. She recalls she did this with great trepidation: “I took the test and even when I saw it was positive I could hardly believe it. I took about a dozen more tests before I really believed it!” Katherine and James now have baby Jacob. James says: “Having Jacob in our lives has been the most amazing thing we’ve ever experienced. Once we started IVF treatment things seemed to happen quickly in comparison with the previous years.” Dr Papathanasiou adds: “Helping patients achieve their dream is an amazing feeling. Our Norwich clinic has excellent success rates and our staff are dedicated in providing support for our patients at every step of their journey.” 56% of patients younger than 37 and receiving IVF blastocyst transfer at Bourn Hall Norwich became pregnant in 2015 (confirmed by a scan). Kathleen concludes: “Jacob’s amazing, the light of our lives! We feel so blessed and thank our lucky stars every day.”

BEAUTY
To groom or not to groom? Sorry boys: Van lla REPOiR Survey reveals T more women want their partners to groom!
Y
ou may well raise a perfectly groomed/not so perfectly groomed brow at this latest survey, but it would seem the fairer sex are no longer content with the au natural man. Now the sun is out, beauty salons are experiencing their yearly influx in waxing salon appointments, but if women get their way they won’t be the only ones enduring pain for the sake of love. Plucking the most staggering statistic from the survey, a whopping 75% of women would like their partners to groom their pubic hair – a surprising seven per cent higher than men – yet with only 55% of men acting on this, it seems they are falling short (and curly). Of course, women are by no means exempt from all the fuzz about body hair, with 68% of men preferring their partners to undertake some kind of grooming and, luckily for them, the survey reveals that an average 82% groom their nether regions to some extent – whether trimming, styling or going the full Brazilian. The tongue-in-cheek survey

(the full figures of which are below) aims to give a general idea of our grooming preferences to shave you from the potentially awkward questions not really appropriate for a first date (hey, we’re not judging!). So whether it’s a clip, trim, tweeze, shave or wax – lie back and think of England. Regardless of gender, it seems your date will thank you for it! The figures in full: • Women who groom 82%
• Males who groom 55% • Women who want their male partners to groom 75% • Males who want their female partners to groom 68% Of the women who groom: • 40% go for full hair removal • 15% style • 44% trim Of the women who want their partners to groom: • 26% prefer full hair removal • 14% prefer styled • 60% are happy with a trim

DENIM HAIR is the newest colour craze. (Kylie Jenner, Nicole Ritchie). Adam Reed has developed three blue hues for L’Oreal Professional so that there is one to suit everyone. Stonewash for a subtle change in natural hair, Indigo for adding intense warm colour and Midnight Ink for those who dare to go darker. For those of you that prefer to stay BLONDE, we’re moving away from the cool, platinum, lilac looks of last summer and we’re starting to warm things up slightly with hints of rose gold, opal and apricot. Use Redken Blonde Idol shampoo and conditioner to keep lightened hair looking healthy and fresh. Balayage and Ombré looks are still very popular so ask your stylist to frame your face and lighten your ends for a natural sun-kissed look. RED-HEADS should aim for multi-dimensional colours. Ask for both copper and warm blonde highlights on your red base to add texture. Reds fade fast, so use a colour depositing conditioner to keep your colour fresh. Revisit your salon every 6-8 weeks for a glossing service to keep the colour looking fresh. Choppier styles are popular this year so PAIR YOUR COLOUR with a layered bob, shag cut or feathered fringe for a summer ready look. THE CLEAR CHOICE FOR A
CONFIDENT SMILE 52
NYONE who has worn traditional metal aligners (braces) on their teeth will probably tell you that it wasn’t a very positive experience! This method of realigning or straightening teeth may have improved over the years, but it can still be inconvenient, uncomfortable and, of course, the wearer often feels very selfconscious. But since 2009, Norwich dentist Ross Campbell has been offering his patients a better way to realign their teeth which doesn’t use metal or wires. Called Invisalign, the treatment is easy, comfortable and nearly invisible. “People who want or need corrective orthodontics can, understandably, feel embarrassed about fixed metal aligners,” says Ross. “There is also the discomfort of having them put in, and the inconvenience of adjustment over a long period of time. The end result is that people often don’t undergo corrective work because they don’t have the confidence, and the whole process can be rather daunting. “With Invisalign, these issues don’t exist, because this system straightens teeth using a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. Each aligner is replaced every two weeks, as your teeth move, so little by little, week by week, your teeth gradually move towards the final position. There is no metal, no screws to tighten, just an unobtrusive, clear plastic aligner. “You can remove the aligners to

asked him about veneers initially, but he said he could straighten my teeth without having to drill at all, using Invisalign. “The entire process was very easy, pain-free and completely invisible – no-one ever noticed the aligners on my teeth – and took 18 months overall. There was a bit of fine tuning to ensure a perfect result, but apart from that I just changed my aligner every two weeks. I am so happy with the result, and my wedding day smile was perfect, as I’d hoped. If I’d had the choice of Invisalign as a teenager I would have jumped at the chance. My best friend and a work colleague have been so impressed with my results that they have had Invisalign themselves.”
eat and drink, so they are not a permanent fixture in the mouth and fit around your lifestyle. And because they are made of a material that is nearly invisible, they are pleasant to wear and the patient isn’t self-conscious. “Patients using Invisalign only need to come and see me every three months. We closely monitor their progress, but they can come and pick up their aligners from the practice and just use a new one every two weeks.” What makes Invisalign treatment with Ross Campbell even more appealing is that he uses an optical scanner to produce a 3D map of patients' teeth, rather than taking messy and uncomfortable impressions. “The optical scanner is a fantastic piece of technology that makes the Invisalign process so much easier and far more accurate. It gives instant computerised results, so in seconds the patient can see, on screen, how their teeth will look at the end of the Invisalign process. It’s quick, easy and mess free.
K
ATHRYN Wright came to see Ross eight years ago. She was getting married and wanted her “wonky” teeth to be perfect for her big day. “I had the train-track metal braces as a teenager, and they were horrible to look at, and painful too. But over the years my teeth had reverted back to how they were, and I wanted to look my best for my wedding. Ross was recommended to me, and I

OR Andi Gibbs, Invisalign was a confidence builder. “As I got older I wanted to feel better about my teeth, as they weren’t as straight I wanted. I am a very smiley person, so it’s important for me to have confidence in my smile. “The whole Invisalign experience for me was very positive indeed. The beauty of Invisalign is that it fits around your life, and you can manage it from home. The aligners are also invisible, so there was no embarrassment factor at all. Ross was incredibly helpful and the overall value for money was superb. I feel great – it’s the best money I have spent in recent years.” n

Treating a sore back at the BackCare Clinic
W
ith my ‘tricky’ back, poor posture and grumbling aches, pains and stiffness, I was delighted when Vanilla asked me to go along and see osteomyologist Nic Aldous at the BackCare Clinic, in Westwick Street, Norwich. I hoped he could help me stand up straighter and go through the night without wincing every time I turned over. Nic has been treating people of all ages with back pain for 20 years, including those with persistent headaches, pregnant women, and even brides who want better posture for their big day. At our initial consultation, Nic told me a very surprising fact. “The majority of people in this country will have a bad back by the time they leave school,” he said. “The problem is usually poor posture, but the biggest issue is stiffness to the spine, and without flexible movement the result is pain. Maintaining back flexibility should be something we all do regularly and from an early age, in the same way same way we look after our teeth.” So how could he help me? Nic specialises in a number of different treatments – CranialSacral Therapy (CST); Theraflex; and Muscle Energy Techniques (METs). Using a combination of these, Nic offers a unique and very successful method of
relieving back pain quickly. CST is a gentle, hands-on treatment that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve headaches, back, neck and shoulder pain, or long-standing and persistent chronic problems. Theraflex is a revolutionary way to restore flexibility to the spine with accurate, powered manipulation – something that cannot be done by hands alone. Nic’s clinic is the only one in East Anglia to offer Theraflex. METs are gentle, but very effective methods of actively using your own muscles to increase movement and relieve painful joints.
I
had three sessions, and Nic used all three therapies. He told me that my right leg was about a centimetre shorter than my left, and corrected this in a matter of seconds with METs, which consisted of some rather challenging stretching on my hips as I lay on the treatment table. The CST was incredibly relaxing and subtle, with Nic gently stretching and flexing my arms and shoulders in a seated position. This did wonders to relieve the pain in my shoulders and neck. He also gave me some gentle exercises to do at home to help improve this even more. But the most effective and
Nic Aldous, Osteomyologist
intriguing part of the treatment was the Theraflex machine. I confess I was initially a little nervous about it! This is a pad fitted with four pistons that pop out and flex each joint of the spine, helped by strategic pressure from the therapist. Nic said it might be an unusual sensation, and he wasn’t wrong! But it was never painful, and he continually assessed my comfort levels. It was rather like a good, deep massage, and he treated the length of my spine, focusing on my mid back where I had most stiffness.
A
fter my treatments I felt so much more flexible, stood a lot straighter and the pains in the middle of my back and neck were vastly improved. A very positive result for me after a lifetime of slouching and niggling pain. I think Nic is spot on, we should give backs the TLC they deserve, it really is worth it to walk taller and pain free. BETTER HEALTH AND WELL-BEING at Treat, Norwich’s new complementary health clinic
C
ity acupuncturist Rebecca Geanty is leading a group of therapists to launch a holistic approach to alternative treatments for those seeking to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. Treat is a new complementary healthcare clinic being launched on a special therapy taster day at Rebecca’s clinic, Norwich Acupuncture Rooms, on July 23. “I am trying to turn the traditional method of running complementary health clinics on its head,” explained Rebecca, a registered traditional acupuncturist. She graduated from the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine with a BSc (Hons) in science and specialises in fertility and pregnancy treatments. “Treat will offer people a 20 minute free consultation first and then they will learn which therapies can treat their condition, so they have choice.” Rebecca, who has been practising since 2008, has teamed up with 14 local therapists to establish Treat and is shortly to launch a website about the service.
56
“The taster day will be open to anyone to come along and we will have a variety of workshops, talks and demonstrations for people to enjoy,” she said. The programme of 10 workshops will include a demonstration of Chinese cupping for easing tension and talks on nutrition.
B
efore becoming an acupuncturist, Rebecca had a stressful job as a restaurant manager, which led to her suffering tension headaches. “I sought the help of an acupuncturist, and after treatment the headaches completely went away. That, along with the fact my 95-year-old grandmother has always advocated alternative health therapies, was what made me decide to become one myself,” she explained. Rebecca now looks after a 1,010-strong client list, treating many in the traditional Chinese style of community clinics, whereby groups of people are seen together, making it more affordable. The Treat therapists are: Sam Coxeter – acupuncturist and
Tui Na masseur; Deb Trafford – acupuncturist; Sophie Davies – aromatherapy masseuse; Kirsty Williams – nutritional therapist; Vicky Taylor – aromatherapy and sports masseuse and beauty therapist; Celeste Waldo – meditation and energy practitioner; Jane Sheehan – reflexology and shiatsu; Linda McCroft – Emotional Freedom Technique and reiki; Stewart Walker – Ki Do, a relaxing form of karate; Kathy Payne – natural health and fertility coach; Molly O’Brian – hypnobirthing and childbirth education; Claire Gurney – Pilates; Julie Middleton – NLP and hypnotherapy; Sally Salmon – yoga and pregnancy yoga teacher; Be Coffin – Mind and Body Reconnection

STYLE FILE BY THE COTSWOLD COMPANY
Grey is the new neutral The Cotswold Company‘s Lundy range is one of our bestselling ranges and one of the most re-pinned looks we’ve shared on Pinterest. So what’s the secret of its success? Sign of The Times. Grey is the New Neutral
Grey has become a staple part of our interiors colour pallet in recent years but one trend we’ve seen grow more and more is the popularity of painted furniture and grey furniture in particular. Grey is an incredibly versatile colour and puts a slightly edgier, modern slant on a neutral colour pallet. The Lundy Stone Grey has a particularly warm tone to it and is a great way of introducing grey to your interiors without a room becoming too cold. If you want your furniture to have longevity and work with future schemes, you need it to be neutral but this look allows you to be bang on trend, safe in the knowledge it won’t look dated in a few years time. Neutral Earthy Tones
Sometimes it’s hard to put your finger on why a particular colour can be so flexible and versatile and why others tend to jar. We often find that picking something with a natural earthy tone in it will lend itself well to the majority of finishes and colours in your home. Mother nature rarely gets her selection of colours wrong, so if you’re looking for something that’s truly neutral, sticking to a muddier pallet will often allow you to blend one colour seamlessly on to the next.

Curtains in Linwood's Drift stripe
8. Stripe Tease
If strong patterns are not your thing, but you want to enliven a plain sofa or wall, then perhaps some classic stripes might work for you. Stripes are so versatile, ranging from child-friendly to elegant and everything in between. Conversely, stripes also work really well alongside pattern, especially florals.
● A simple ticking can work anywhere –
originally a blue and cream vertical woven striped fabric used to make mattress and pillow covers – it comes in many colour ways as well as the quintessential blue and cream. It conjures a coastal feel, which is ever popular, and looks equally lovely as a scatter cushion or on an armchair. Simple but effective. ● A more traditional Regency stripe, usually
just in two colours and more commonly seen as wallpaper, can make quite a statement. Used horizontally rather than vertically, it can create the illusion of width and you get to see more of the pattern which is good.

● For a fun look, use a deckchair stripe. Multi-
coloured and random widths, it can provide an element of fun in an otherwise neutral space. These can look lovely made into a headboard in a tiny room providing a focal point and allowing for a change of palette at anytime by picking one of the many colours. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk All items listed are available through Salt Interiors

Renovating windows and doors to their original glory will add lots of value to your home and make it much easier to sell.

The most obvious way to add value to your property is to extend the square footage. Adding an extension gives an instant boost and can change the appeal of any home. It also gives you the chance to add what you feel the property lacks. We all love to see light and space, nevertheless, it is important to not lose the homely feel. Conservatories, orangeries and summer houses allow us to continue our alfresco living across the rest of the year.

PATIO DOORS REINVENTED Bi-fold doors are an incredible
solution if you want to maximise your outside view. They allow you to effortlessly open up your property to the garden and provide a vast clear open space by merging your living space and garden into one. They offer a great visual aspect to the outside and, if you’re short on room indoors, they help create the illusion of space even when closed as you have a wall of glass to view letting in maximum light. On the more practical side, Aluminium doors are made with precision engineering, they are very high performance and thermally efficient. Anthracite grey on the outside and white inside is a popular colour choice for aluminium doors, but the colour options and finishes are endless.

Level thresholds and the slick smooth operation give the wow factor every time. Bi-fold doors are quick to install. Either the builder creates the opening, and then the door company measures up before building the frames to fit. Or, for a faster turnaround, the builder commits to creating an opening of a set size and the frame arrives designed to fit it. Typically the doors are installed in one day by professional installers. The frame is assembled first and having this 100% level is crucial to any installation. The doors are then hung, with the glass going in last of all.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ESTATE AGENT? You put your house on the market, but the estate agent is the one who actually sells it. Choosing the right agent is a critical decision – it can make the difference between getting a really good price, and not selling your house at all. But how do you tell the difference between good agents and bad ones?
Last month Norwich firm, Reality scooped Gold for Best Estate Agent in the East of England Category, beating off competition from seven other shortlisted estate agents in the region at the ESTAS 2016, the biggest awards for estate and letting agents in the UK. Affectionately nicknamed by her clients as the ‘Kirstie Allsopp of Norwich’, fully qualified estate agent and founder of Reality, Lucy Carne and her team were recognised for their outstanding customer service, where they collected the coveted Gold award from TV property personality Phil Spencer (pictured above). Winners are decided purely on ratings provided by over 30,000 vendors and home buyers. Lucy explains why she thinks her business won the award: “We encompass traditional values and a high level of customer care – this approach has offered reassurance to hundreds of local buyers and sellers. It also helps that we’re an independent estate agency and able to adapt with the current demands and trends.” The company, based in NR1, first started operating during the height of the recession in 2009, however, armed with a notable amount of experience and a philosophy rooted in customer service, not only did the city firm survive this unsettling time but thrived. As the seller, you choose the estate agent, and the agent works for you. Do you trust them with your most valuable asset? It’s worth doing your research – integrity and great customer service can save you from a house-selling nightmare! For a refreshing local approach to buying & selling your property. THE GARDEN MAKER
PROFILE
Meet Michael Read of Loxley Hall Garden Design
W
E BRITS love our gardens, and as the weather warms up we are out there planting, weeding and creating a space we can call our own. But gardens have become more than just a showcase for flowers, they are now a sophisticated extension and reflection of our living space. This means we can get more from our gardens, by creating a designed theme that links our interior and exterior, effectively bringing the outside in…and vice versa. No-one understands this better than Mike Read, head designer of Loxley Hall Ltd, a multi-award winning landscape design company in Norwich. For over 20 years, Mike and his team have been designing and creating gardens of every style and type – from traditional to contemporary. “Gardens are very personal, and it’s our job to turn our customers’ dreams into reality,” says Mike. “Over the years the trends of garden living have become much more design-led. They are now a continuation of the living space. People want to spend more time living and entertaining outdoors in a natural environment, so they want their garden and house to share a theme. They are
72
no longer completely separate spaces.”
S
O HOW does Mike help his customers to achieve this cohesive, alfresco living style? “We often use a colour, or style of flooring in a garden to complement the flooring in the home. For example if there is a wood laminate floor in the main room leading out to the garden, we will use a wooden decking outside to continue the theme. Lighting has also become very popular, enabling people to show off their green space at night, in the winter, or for entertaining. “These days a lot of people want low maintenance gardens, and there is huge demand for artificial lawns, because it looks just like real grass, but requires very little care. Our younger customers prefer architectural, exotic plants with large fronds, such as ornamental grasses, palms and bamboo. Again, these are very easy to care for and you can achieve some fantastic colour
combinations with different foliage without using flowers. For those who do like some blooms, larger blocks of flowering perennials create a splash of colour without the work. “There is such a great choice of materials on the market for creating striking gardens with a difference,” adds Mike. “Squarecut Indian polished sandstone and slate is very in for the ultimate contemporary look along with hardwood or composite decking which now comes in a variety of colours and is superb quality and non slip.” So there really is no excuse for a lack-lustre garden. By creating a haven that reflects your lifestyle and increases your living space, your garden can be part of your home all year round, whatever the weather! elice, on Castle Meadow, may already be your favourite weekday lunch stop. The ice-cream and coffee venue serves a top range of sandwiches, salads and baguettes and is always very popular in the middle of the day. But come home time, it’s also a perfect post-work drinks and nibbles stop. Open from 5pm until 10.30pm on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, a few of us went early one evening to enjoy cold beers and sharing platters. The Delice team have created a modern menu of food boards that are delicious with a wellearned glass of wine. Served on slates, they feature lots of homemade eats sourced from local ingredients. We ordered the Norfolk Cheese Board, the Veggie Board and mixed olives with bread and balsamic. Cheese fiends will love the artisan selection of Smoked

T
he highlight of the Veggie Board is the British pea hummus – virtually hoovered up by our table, along with artichoke, roasted Mediterranean vegetables and grilled halloumi. The halloumi, unusually, is served as slim slices, much more enjoyable than the usual wedge you find elsewhere. A dish of juicy marinated olives, with a lovely selection of grilled and fresh breads, and we were all set! Having been so well looked after, we were looking forward to dessert. We were happy to see that Ronaldo’s ice cream, so popular during the day, was featured on
the menu in an Affogato. We also chose a Strawberry Meringue Cake and the Figs and Mascarpone. If you’ve only ever enjoyed figs at Christmas and from a box at that, do try the latter. Fresh figs are entirely different and perfect as Delice serves them – lightly grilled with local honey and soft cheese. We stayed longer than we planned, but that’s what happens when the food and company are good. Slap bang in the city and close to our favourite pubs and bars, Delice is a great way to start a night out. REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

e are lucky to have our beautiful sun-filled courtyard at The Library – it’s the perfect spot for people watching or feasting on our classy grill dishes and the chance to sample some of our lovely new wines, a summer cocktail or even a craft ale. We hold regular wine-tasting dinners at The Library – our South African-themed June dinner has proved to be popular with just a few seats left. We have planned a virtual tour of the Garden Route; from Stellenbosch to the newer wine regions of Swartland and, of course, Constantia. South Africa now competes in every category, with crisp Sauvignons and creamy Chardonnays; honeyed Chenin Blancs and silky Pinots, not forgetting worldfamous Pinotage – a unique cross of Burgundy's Pinot Noir with Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Cinsault, or Hermitage, that was created back in 1925. Our dinners are a great opportunity to enjoy wines that you may not ordinarily have chosen, carefully matched with a fabulous three-course supper. If wine evenings are not for you, simply visit anytime to sample our delicious wines. With summer and wistful thinking about South Africa, I have chosen one of my current favourites: Ernst Gouws & Co Chenin Blanc. From a family-owned winery in the heart of Stellenbosch, the hand-picked grapes are fermented in stainless steel to preserve the flavours of kiwi, citrus and apple. Perfect with fresh prawns, salad, chicken or just on its own. Here’s to summer drinking! The Library Bar and Grill, Guildhall Hill, Norwich. www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk 01603 616606

eTIAnL h c it K CONFIDEN TOM HARDING, OF DOZEN ARTISAN BAKERY After leaving school, Tom Harding originally planned to do a business studies course at college, but decided it wasn’t for him and opted instead to learn to be a baker. Now he runs his own successful business, the Dozen Artisan Bakery, in Norwich. Why do you think more people are opting to buy foods made using traditional methods and natural ingredients?
Nowadays, there is a lot more knowledge about what ingredients go in to making mass-produced foodstuffs. I think increasingly people would rather buy food where they know what’s in it. Every day we freshly bake six different types of handmade bread including white, wholemeal, seeded and sourdough, a range of pastries, sausage rolls and cakes. Our customers know the person who made that product has done their best to make it as good as it can be. Being a baker means an early start to the day, how do you cope with that?
In order for our bread to be on the shelves by 8am, I get up at 2am, six days a week. I usually
78
go to bed about 8pm. I always say to people that no matter what time you have to get up, it is always a struggle, even if it is 10am. I have been doing it for nearly 20 years so I am pretty used to it now. It means my leisure time is usually in the afternoons. I guess the most difficult thing about it is if someone has invited me to a special event in the evening. If I go, I am always thinking I have to be in bed soon. Which of Norfolk’s artisan food producers make the best accompaniment to your bread?
“Every day we freshly bake six different types of handmade bread including white, wholemeal, seeded and sourdough, a range of pastries, sausage rolls and cakes.” I make when my wife is away, so I can eat it all myself, and the other is my own variation of a kedgeree. Mostly, my wife does the cooking at home, and I tend to assist with chopping the vegetables.
We actually stock Mrs Temple’s Cheese, of Wighton, which goes really well with our sourdough breads, and a range of lovely jams and chutneys from The Garden Pantry, Spooner Row, Wymondham.

How to succeed at Gluten-free BBQs BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd.
Catering for summer events and BBQs can be a daunting prospect if you’re on a strict gluten free diet – and as their host this can put additional pressure on you too. But with a little bit of forethought and planning it's easier than you think.
MODERN PUB DINING Fresh, seasonal food. Local suppliers. Seasonal produce.
Here are our top tips for catering for your gluten free guests: ● Gluten is found in barley, wheat and rye and oats – so make sure that you check every label – the offenders should be bold on the ingredients list.
Commendation of Excellence from Tripadvisor 2013, 2014 & 2015
● Make sure that you keep gluten containing foods separate, and use fresh knives, boards and utensils for gluten free food preparation. ● Heat does not destroy gluten, so BBQ gluten free meats on a separate grill or on tin foil – unprepared meat is naturally gluten free and most reputable butchers will have a gluten free range of sausages and burgers. ● Watch out for sauces, pickles, dressings and gravies – either source gluten free alternatives, or keep things plain and then guests can choose their own. ● When it comes to nibbles and finger foods, if you prepare vegetable crudities and dips, olives, cheeses, and even tortilla chips and gluten free crisps and nuts, it’s something that everyone can have – and the gluten freeers won’t feel like they have to miss out.

rrival at this beautiful manor house fills one with expectation, it is so impressive, and that promise is realised in the superb interiors. We were greeted and shown to our table by the attentive Zsolt, who was to take care of us during our Afternoon Tea experience. Sprowston Manor was bustling, but reportedly becomes even busier on high days and holidays. It is also a favoured venue for birthday celebrations.

Afternoon tea can be taken at a location of your choice within the hotel. In winter this might be beside the flickering fire, or savouring the wonderful views from a picture window, and guests confess to having a favourite table for the occasion. Choosing tea from a comprehensive selection, I decided upon the Earl Grey and my friend the spiced chai. Both were delicious leaf served in individual pots topped up with hot water or changed at your request throughout the tea. We were brought a three-tier plate laden with all sorts of goodies (requests are happily dealt with, where possible, for variations on the range). On the first tier, the sandwich selection was smoked salmon, ham cut from the bone, cucumber, and cheese & pickle,
daintily crustless. The next layer was assorted heavenly sweet temptations – vanilla slice, rich chocolate pudding, blueberry mousse, macaroons and fresh strawberries. Such was the multitude of treats, I feared we might be unable to tackle the top tier, proffering my very favourite – scones … I adore them! But how to resist, and they did not disappoint – still warm, yielding, both fruit and plain, and served with traditional clotted cream and jam. But afternoon tea at Sprowston Manor can be even more extravagant. Perhaps choose a chilled glass of prosecco or champagne, or a civilised G&T. The perfect indulgence in wonderful surroundings. Chris Coughlan Owner of Lakenham Creamery
My City Life
as I like them all! If I was pushed I’d say our gourmet Norfolk County Ice Cream, in particular the Raspberries and Cream flavour – because I love raspberries.
What are Lakenham Creamery’s future plans any new ventures or exciting flavours? We have quite a few plans, but I won’t reveal all just yet. All I will say is look out for the return of some past favourites. As for new flavours, we are launching a Vanilla and Pecan Crunch, and a Mascarpone and Fig very shortly. There will be some new winter flavours too. We are always developing new ideas.
What do you love about Norwich, what makes it unique?
Chris, how did you get into ice cream making? After selling my previous business I was looking for new opportunities and saw this business for sale in the Sunday Times! A few phone calls and a quick trip to Norwich sealed the deal. I knew it was the right city, and the right business, for me.
What makes Lakenham Creamery ice cream so special? It’s very simple, we use only the best quality ingredients to make a proper super premium ice cream. This means cream, sugar, eggs and natural flavours. Nothing else. This is what sets us apart. We blend the best of traditional and new technologies, and the basic methods we use to make the ice cream really haven’t changed that much since 1921. It’s made in the proper ‘slow food’ way.
Where are your favourite places to go in Norwich?
What is your favourite Lakenham Creamery ice cream?
There are so many, but I love No. 33 on Exchange Street, they do a brilliant breakfast which I find hard to resist! East Twenty Six, also on Exchange Street, does really great food. For menswear the service at Chadds is superb. Who can live without Thorns and Jarrolds – two Norwich institutions? n
Wow... that’s a difficult question,

After graduating from University in the 1970s, Chris worked in the far east and Africa. In 1992 he sold his previous business, moved back to the UK, and bought Lakenham Creamery. He lives in Cringleford with his wife and two grown up daughters.
It’s a simply brilliant city. Small enough so you don’t feel overwhelmed, with a great range of interesting independent shops, which give it a unique feel. And there are great places like the Theatre Royal, all surrounded by lovely countryside and the coast a short drive away – what more could I ask for?
