R 24-25 SEPTEMBE ALDEBURGH FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL NEW BOOK ABOUT IPSWICH IN THE GREAT WAR

How did children in Ipswich help the war effort? Who was imprisoned in Ipswich for opposing the war? Where in the town was there thought to be a German military control centre? In this thoroughly researched and highly readable study of the Ipswich Home Front, local author Rachel Field’s latest book has a wealth of information on the life of civilians at home and at work, care of the sick and wounded, civilian contributions to the war effort and how people spent their leisure time. Military matters and how they directly affected local people are also explored, including Zeppelin raids on the town. Packed with original research, personal accounts and fascinating local stories, the book charts many highways and newly discovered byways of life in and around the town in the war years. Available at Waterstones in Ipswich for £12.99 or online at www.pen-and-sword.co.uk

Tickets are now on sale for Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival 2016, which takes place over the weekend of 24 and 25 September. Now in its 11th year, the friendly festival is held in the historic and beautiful setting of Snape Maltings, Suffolk, the home of Aldeburgh Music. This year’s festival will showcase over 100 of the region’s finest food and drink producers and is hosting leading chefs from around the UK. Headlining the two-day calendar, jam-packed with demos and handson masterclasses, will be the chef and author Angela Hartnett, whose ever growing collection of restaurants includes London’s Michelin starred Murano in Chelsea and the fashionable Shoreditch haunt Merchants Tavern. East Anglia has long been a larder for

the rest of England and this important role continues. The Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival celebrates the strong connection between Suffolk’s landscape and the abundance, variety and quality of its produce, coming from the sea, the rivers and the fertile valleys which lead to the rich arable soil of the region’s uplands.

GREAT IPSWICH BAKE OFF 2016 The winner of the Great Ipswich Bake Off 2016 has been crowned after impressing the judges with an ‘Ipswich on a plate’ cake. Barbara Zion from Ipswich pulled out all the stops, beating stiff competition from others to showcase the town on a cake in this year’s competition. As the winner, Barbara receives £100 of baking goodies so she can continue with her passion of creating wonderful cakes for her family and friends. The Great Ipswich Bake Off formed part of Food and Drink Forknight that ran earlier in the year.

I

absolutely love sunshine. I’ve probably said this before, but I need that shot of vitamin D, and the heat on my skin that only sunshine can give you. If I could dictate the weather I’d want summer to start as early in March as possible and to last right up until October. Then I’d like a cold crisp sunny Winter please. I doubt I’m alone in this and I’m sure that’s why we all spend so much time talking about the weather. Summer essentials: Now, unlike many people, Long sleeved white who I’ve seen in dark denim shirt, bright coloured bag and ankle boots. and long boots way into June this year, I like to dress western style. Legs look great if you for summer as early as possible are wearing a heel, but for a casual and keep up the impression of every day look, I suggest a small sunshine until it just becomes silly. block or western heel. T

he other essential to help you cross the seasonal barrier is a long sleeved white shirt. Now this old favourite can be one of many shapes. It could be oversized and long enough to double up as a dress, or fitted and worn tucked in or out, or boxy and kind, if you want to enjoy a three course meal, to name but a few options. If you have the tiniest flicker of a tan, you will look positively glowing, and if it’s dull outside you will feel bright and fresh. It's perfect for adding layers to, and a complete necessity for the season ahead where designers have excelled in the options available. The other essential has to be a pair of boyfriend style jeans, with a deep turn up, so they looked cropped. I’ve seen plenty of these in light weight denim, with or without the frayed look, but team those up with your ankle boots, your oversized white shirt, a fabulous long statement necklace and a coloured handbag, voila!! Who cares if it’s a bit wet, a bit colder than you’d like, a bit ’not very summery’. Girls, just dress to beat the weather, you never know, it might start raining men! ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden, Essex and coming soon, Colchester.

“I am able to stay in our family home and offer the girls some stability”

Protecting your financial future on divorce MY PROBLEM: Almost 20 years on from our wedding, my husband, Patrick, and I reached the sad, but amicable, conclusion that our marriage was over. We didn’t really argue a great deal, but there just wasn’t any love between us anymore. Our two daughters were 19 and 16. The eldest was already at university and the youngest was preparing to go too. We knew that as soon as she left the nest there would be nothing keeping us together any longer. Neither of us blamed the other for the break up, it was simply one of those sad turns that life takes. So, we didn’t want to rush divorce proceedings and decided to simply separate and let matters take their natural course for two years. Patrick

30

moved into a rental property and I stayed in our marital home with our youngest daughter. Earlier this year, we reached the two year anniversary of our separation and so, with our youngest daughter also heading off to university in the coming months, it felt time to finalise our divorce and tie things up financially, but I was scared of the implications of this. Whilst I’d had a good career pre-children and a reasonable pension behind me, I had no immediate means of buying a house that would be anything like our marital home. I desperately still wanted to have a house big enough for both of the girls to come back to during the holidays. JANE, WOODBRIDGE

REAL LIVES

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: My sister had been through a rather more acrimonious divorce a few years ago and found Barker Gotelee to be absolutely amazing and incredibly supportive. She didn’t hesitate in recommending them. So, as anxious as I felt at the time, I picked up the phone and explained the nature of my call. I was put through to Josie Hayes in the Family Team, who was extremely understanding and immediately put me at ease. We arranged to meet and I instantly felt as though things were going to be okay after all. I explained everything and talked through my concerns about future finances. Josie assured me that both she and the Court would be looking for a fair settlement to enable Patrick and me to move on, knowing that our future would be financially secure. Both Patrick and I had to disclose all of our assets, which obviously included things like the house, but also each of our pensions. I knew I’d been very fortunate to have the pension I had during my career, but it was frozen a long time ago and, until this could be drawn, I really had no idea how I was going to house myself, or the girls.

W

hen Josie reviewed all of our assets, it became apparent that Patrick’s pension was worth far more than either of us had anticipated. He was also just two years away from being able to draw it and so he suggested that I keep the house and he, in turn, retain all of his pension. Josie said this wasn’t an uncommon

August/September 2016 Vanilla

agreement to come to and, taking into consideration my own pension, that I would be able to draw eventually, seemed a fair settlement. She drew up all of the necessary papers and filed a consent order, which was accepted and, therefore, agreed by the Court.

I

feel so unbelievably relieved. We were able to come to a very amicable agreement that means I am able to stay in our family home and offer the girls some stability. They’ve obviously felt unsettled with what’s happened in recent

years – I desperately wanted to retain some kind of normality for them. Now they can come back to the same house and their same room in the holidays. As for Patrick, he can look forward to a financially secure future knowing that his pension income is protected. We’ve all come out of this as friends and genuinely pleased for each other. I am so grateful for all of Josie’s advice and support in making a very uncomfortable and worrying situation as bearable as it possibly could be and for bringing this to a fair conclusion for us both. ■

WORK

IN THE WORKPLACE

D

ID YOU KNOW that 62% of the entire adult population are on Facebook? Every 60 seconds on Facebook: 510 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded. These are just a few astonishing statistics about the world’s most popular social media forum, and go some way to explaining the significant problems employers are having to tackle every day as a result of their employees’ use of social media. We receive so many calls from our clients wanting advice about social media related incidents. It always surprises me how badly informed employees can be regarding the use of their Facebook account and how unprepared their employers are to deal with such matters. Last week we received a telephone call from a client saying that an employee had called in sick

that day but had then posted photographs on their Facebook wall of themselves on Southwold beach (looking gorgeous by the way!). This was followed shortly by another employee who had made derogatory and damaging comments on their wall regarding specific members of management and the company itself. This plus the issue of employees logging on to social media sites during the working day, complaints of bullying and harassment over social media forums and former employees publically defaming the company. The list is never-ending and, whilst some examples are hilarious, it is our job to help advise employers on how to tackle these problems.

P

REVENTION is better than cure. It’s advisable for all employers to implement a robust Social Media Policy within their Staff Handbook.

Training staff on what is and isn’t acceptable with the use of social media on company computers and mobile phones and personal laptops and phones is also recommended. The Social Media Policy should prohibit employees from making derogatory, offensive or damaging comments about your business, employees, clients etc on any social media site, regardless of whether or not it happens during work hours or not. Any breach of the policy should be clearly set out as a disciplinary offence. Employees need to remember that all social media leaves a trail. Venting your frustrations on any form of social media is not a good idea, however bad the day has been. Likewise, what you thought was hilarious whilst drunk at university, may be looked at by future employers. Ringing in sick on a glorious sunny day is a nono. You may be found out! ■

The NAVYÄRD: A ‘love letter to the continent’

THE PIER AT HARWICH

A homage to the glory days of continental travel

F

ollowing on from a 1.5 million reinvestment over the last 5 months, The Pier at Harwich is once again open and set to become East Anglia’s number one coastal destination for food and drink. So what better reason, on a sunny July day, than to take a trip across to the historic Harwich eaterie to see what has changed. Although passports aren’t generally required when visiting Essex we decided to enter into the spirit and arrive by boat, instead of car, just as tourists would have in days gone by. There’s an excellent foot ferry running between Shotley, Harwich and Felixstowe which added a touch of adventure to the day (www.harwichharbourferry.com).

34

Stunning estuary views

Alighting at Ha’penny Pier we were transported back to the last century, when European travel was not for the masses. With estuary views from every table, The Pier, only a stone’s throw from the confluence of the Stour and Orwell estuaries, is a pretty unique destination. The NAVYÄRD bar and terrace on the ground floor takes its name from the shipyard which built more than 60 vessels between the 17th and 19th century. This industry was at the heart of the Harwich community and in the 19th century when the Great Eastern Railway arrived, it was possible to leave London Liverpool St. Station, arrive in Harwich and be in Rotterdam or Zeebrugge within 14 hours.

The NAVYÄRD is undeniably and unashamedly a ‘love letter to the continent’ – celebrating the influential and historic links that Harwich holds with Scandanavia and wider Europe. Cask ales, craft beers, a great drinks list, Prosecco-based cocktails and one of the most carefully sourced and extensive gin lists makes this ‘the’ go-to bar for Harwich visitors. The wines, beers, ales, drinks list and a gin library have been sourced from across Europe and are complemented throughout the day by Nordic-inspired smallplated food. Great coffee, fresh pastries and the simplest tastiest late breakfasts (think eggs, rye bread and avocado) through to open Scandinavian sandwiches, sharing platters and fresh oysters.

LEISURE

The first floor brasserie

The redefined brasserie is located on the first floor of the completely modernised 1860 listed building in historic Harwich. The stripped back and raw textured interior, designed by Geraldine Milsom, makes reference to the industrious Harwich port, but achieves a balance between function, luxury and glamour. The harbour wall is only 20 metres from the door and The Pier’s newly extended first floor balcony (for drinks and outdoor dining) overlooks the water, ships and working docks. The two of us were warmly welcomed and the friendly staff, led by General Manager, Chris Beardsmore, were really attentive and delivered great service right through a long afternoon of two

mates putting the world to rights. The wine list was a shortlist of great choices at good value prices and we enjoyed a lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio from the very temptingly described ‘wine heroes’ options. Warm bread arrived instantly – which smelled and tasted as if it was fresh from the oven – was a perfect way to get our tastebuds tingling. The menu celebrates modern classics, an exciting grill menu and wonderful fresh fish and shellfish landed on The Pier’s doorstep. Chosen courses were grilled South Coast sardines with salsa verde and an exceptional Yellow Fin tuna tartare to start. Followed by mains of Dingly Dell pork schnitzel, with a perfectly cooked

poached egg and delicious gentleman’s relish butter, and a fillet of stone bass with cockles and butter beans. And to finish, Ardleigh strawberry Eton mess served with a gorgeous raspberry sorbet and a vanilla crème brûlée served with shortbread and cherry compote. Our food, over all three courses, was seriously good and beautifully served, with little twists that were just right to make you feel like you were eating something familiar but also a bit special. A perfect lunch on every level was finished off with mint tea served in the sunshine on the balcony. The Pier at Harwich, The Quay, Harwich CO12 3HH 01255 241212 www.milsomhotels.com/the-pier/

SCHOOLS

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD

O

NE OF THE biggest decisions you make as a parent is deciding where to enrol your child to school. The limitless questions which arise through the process, knowing which one is best and which one worst, all combining factors to make it a stressful step for all involved. With the overall aim that your child is as happy as can be with the final outcome, the vitality of ensuring they are at the best place for them is key.

August/September 2016 Vanilla

So what is important when choosing a school? Endless questions can be posed at this stage, all with such a limited time frame to find the answer to. Most of us have been out of the schooling scene for some time, and a lot has changed. So take this chance to sit down with your partner and prioritise what you want for your child from the academic institution in which you will choose. Are there any schools that family or friends

have recommended? How are the local schools performing on an academic level, also think about how your child will be getting to and from school, distance plays a role in the decision process. It’s easy to be swayed by expensive state-of-the-art facilities or put off by out of date and untidy premises, so how can we truly judge a school? Neil Tetley, Headmaster of Woodbridge School offers some sound advice here: “In choosing

37

SCHOOLS FASHION

The Education issue

Rather like buying a house, when you look round a school, you often get the feeling that this is ‘right’ for you. a school you should focus primarily on people. Not just the head but other key people. Ask to meet the pastoral leaders or teachers in key areas where your son or daughter has a particular passion. Parents are often swayed by facilities (and of course facilities have to form part of the consideration) but ultimately great facilities have no positive effect whatsoever without good people. My advice would be look beyond the facade of any school. Will they nurture your child and really bring the most out of him or her as an individual?” Oona Carlin, Head of Ipswich High School for Girls, highlights how each school has its own personality: “Just as all children are individuals, so all schools

38

have their individual offer, and it is for parents and pupils to decide which school suits them best. I lead an all-girls school and I firmly believe that this is the best environment for my pupils to grow, develop and achieve; but I don’t believe this solely because it is an all-girls school, I believe it is the best school because we provide a unique education, with an individualised approach to pupil needs. As heads, we should all be aiming to make our school offer the best it can be and embrace its individuality.” VISITS

Whether it be for enrolment in pre-school, junior, primary or high school, school visits play a key role in the decision making process. These visits allow you to

get a real feel for the environment and pose questions such as ‘do you feel welcome, personally and culturally?’, ‘are the teachers keen and well informed?’ and whether or not there is a friendly, open, respectful communication between teachers and children. It is a crucial time to become informed on the facilities in place, as well as school activities available, allowing you to make a judgement on whether your child will be most happy in that environment and whether they will be able to flourish with the opportunities given. As well as this, remember you can speak to your local authority, get access to local league tables to find out exactly which schools are performing best both academically and within other

Nicholas Weaver, Headmaster, Ipswich School explains further: “Rather like buying a house, when you look round a school, you often get the feeling that this is ‘right’ for you. Many of our prospective pupils and parents tell me that that is exactly their impression when they come for a visit. They say that the purposeful atmosphere, the passionate teaching staff and the happy pupils represent just what they feel school should be. draw up a short list, abandoning those you did not warm to and beginning to look deeper into those you admired. At this stage, talking to other families whose children go there can be helpful, giving you first hand advise on the school from both a parent and child perspective. As well as this, visiting further open days or information evenings can be vital in filling up the last few gaps in knowledge, enabling you to feel more confident and comfortable with where to enrol your child. In recent surveys carried out by a teaching union found that more than half (54%) of parents look online for general information, 49% read the latest inspection report and 53% speak to parents of current pupils. All of this

gathered information combines to leave you with a final, well rounded view of each potential school for your child. PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Whether it’s additional languages, earlier morning drop-offs or comprehensive online parent portals, the sector’s reputation for choice is holding up well, says Janette Wallis, senior editor of the Good Schools Guide. “Analysing the last three years’ exam results will give you valuable academic information, but softer issues regarding school life are vital for making children feel settled,” confirms Wallis. If you are considering boarding, ask current boarders what the food is like and find out what they do at weekends, to find out what school life is like from a pupil themselves. And of course when choosing a private school, fees and value for money have to be taken into account as you are paying for what you can comfortably afford and want to get the most out of it that you can. It is also important to get a feel for how each school is progressing, www.telegraph. co.uk/education/leaguetables provides accurate league tables in ranking of academic performance. ■

ast issue, Vanilla spoke to Beth Parrish from Paul Henri Salon in Ipswich’s St Nicholas Street about their impending makeover and we’re very pleased to report that they have now re-opened for business with a beautiful and restful new look. We’ve had another chat with Beth about the changes they have made and what customers, both new and existing, can expect when they visit. So what made you decide to refurbish, Beth? “The salon has been situated where it is for 9 years now and we felt we wanted to put our own

stamp on it after taking over the business 3 years ago. I wanted to create extra space for my colleagues to work in and provide a relaxing environment for our guests.” Can you tell us a little about the changes you have made? “The salon has been painted inside and out and we have replaced all the cutting chairs, and salon basins. “As we are an Aveda salon, using naturally derived products, I wanted to create a calm, rustic, earthy feel. Lots of fresh plants, different textures and light natural colours throughout,” she told us.

It sounds like the entire salon has had an overhaul? “Yes, we closed for five days to ensure that the new reception area, nail bar, extra storage units, air conditioning/ heating system and kitchen facilities were all installed. Most important of all, we can now cater for more clients as we have two extra cutting stations.” Ensuring the salon retains a calm atmosphere is important to Beth and her staff. Complimentary Aveda rituals will still be offered during customer visits – staff are trained to provide stress-relieving hand, head, neck

HOW TO AVOID

SUN DAMAGED HAIR

Here are just a few ways to revive your hair after too much time in the sun. 1. Rinse with cool water

Rinsing your hair with cool water after washing will seal up the hair cuticles that have been opened by the hot water, therefore locking in the much-needed moisture gained from conditioning. 2. Opt for a sulfate free shampoo

Sulfate is a common ingredient in shampoo but can cause problems for damaged hair, as it strips beneficial oils. Minimise additional frizz by avoiding this ingredient as much as possible. 3. Go for a trim

Making sure you get rid of split ends is the key to shiny hair, especially important if your hair is dry from heat damage. Cutting off the ends will get rid of the most damaged parts of your hair. 4. Wash hair after swimming

Leaving chlorine in your hair after

46

swimming is a definite no, as it dries it out further. Make sure you wash your hair before sunbathing to avoid additional damage 5. Avoid ponytails

Wearing your hair down as much as possible will prevent the additional breakage that using a bobble can create. If you do go for a ponytail, make sure you wear it at slightly different heights each day to avoid too much pressure. 6. DIY avocado mask

When blended with oil, avocado is a fantastic ingredient that adds nutrients to the hair, making the ends less frazzled and hair shinier. 7. Apply deep conditioner before sun exposure

If you’re heading to the beach, avoid worsening the damage by applying deep conditioner before you go out. This will soak in to

your hair, rather than sitting on the surface like other products do, so will help to protect it. 8. Try warm coconut oil

Heat up coconut oil until it’s a liquid consistency, it makes a fantastic natural repair mask for your hair. Run this through the ends but avoid the roots as much as possible to avoid a greasy look. 9. Use aloe vera

Although we tend to associate aloe vera with skincare, its repairing effects are also beneficial to your hair. This is a wonder product if your scalp and hair are sun damaged – apply it to both and let it sooth and revive. 10. Use black tea in dark hair

If your dark hair colour is looking a little lackluster, rinsing it in dark tea will help to bring back the colour that the sun has taken away. n Vanilla August/September 2016

New stylist at Distraxion

D

ISTRAXION, one of Ipswich’s well-loved salons, has been going from strength to strength in recent years. Owner, Damien Nurse, and his team are forever expanding as the business grows and they have recently welcomed Bart as their newest stylist. Originally from Poland, Bart has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience with him to the Distraxion team. You are the newest stylist to the Distraxion team, what is your background and why did you decide to get into hairdressing?

When I decided to become a hairdresser there were only female stylists in Poland and being a male stylist was held

in disrepute. However, I knew since I was a young boy that I had found my vocation in hairdressing. My parents always supported me and my dreams and thanks to them I was able to go to a barber college and from there I got a job in the best hair salon in Łódz´. What brought you to Ipswich and, more specifically, to the Distraxion Hair Salon?

The answer to that question is also connected with my family. My parents and my brother moved from Poland to England much earlier than I did and I really missed them. One day I decided to turn my life upside down, I packed my bags and here I am.

It turned out to be a perfect decision. England is full of diversity and that is very inspirational. It brings inspiration for a lot of new ideas for haircuts. I wanted to work at Distraxion because I was looking for a really good salon where I could gain valuable experience and work with the best stylists. What do you specialise in?

I was always very ambitious which is why I attended specific courses after I left school and then I decided to open up my own salon. This gave me a lot of experience in both management and hairdressing and it also allowed me to find out my speciality – now I know that I just love ‘colourizations’!

BEAUTY

SUMMER BODY PREP

Summer is here which means it’s time to bare all, well almost. Put the prep work in now and you won’t have to panic when it’s time to hit the beach…

W

E ALL LIKE to think of summer beauty as lowmaintenance; dishevelled beachy hair, sun-kissed, radiant skin and nothing more than SPF and a few coats of mascara. Wrong. As much as we love this season it is the time of year when you have to put in the prep work, and we’re talking de-fuzzing, tanning, polishing, scrubbing, the list goes on (men don’t know how lucky they are). Put in the time and you’ll thank yourself for it later, when the dreaded bikini moment isn’t quite so dreaded. Silky-soft smooth skin and perfectly-polished fingers and toes really are your summer musthaves. While you could barricade yourself in your bathroom and spend a day doing DIY pampering, we strongly suggest you hand your

body over to the experts who will do the job for you. Plus, you’ll not only look good but feel good after a spot of ‘me’ time. Luckily for you there are loads of spas and salons offering ‘summer prep’ packages which are not to be missed, where you can enjoy multiple treatments at a saving.

TIPS TO MAXIMISE YOUR SUMMER TREATMENTS

1

Buy the nail varnish that is used in your treatment for touch-ups.

2

Maintain your golden glow with a gradual self-tan applied every other day and avoid oily moisturisers that will ‘lift’ your tan.

3

Invest in a cooling Aloe Vera gel for post-wax soothing. Book your appointments in advance as that ‘must-have’ pedi can’t always be squeezed in the day before you go on holiday!

HEALTH

SUMMER BODY PREP

Chris Lawson from Crossfit-ISC, in Ipswich, helps set some realistic goals for getting your body back in shape...

T

he key tips we recommend to getting yourself in shape over the summer period is to keep things simple! Good quality and healthy food mixed with enough exercise is a great start. Most importantly though we feel you shouldn’t put extra pressure on yourself to reach that Summertime body. Many people give themselves unrealistic expectations of getting a bikini body or slimmer figures ready for the Summer beach sun. In principle these goals are fine but what is unrealistic is the time in which people give themselves to achieve it. The body takes a minimum of 4 weeks to adapt to any training

schedule or lifestyle change. So there’s our first bit of advice; start early enough to give yourself time to make a change. You, of course, cannot ‘out train’ a poor diet! So if anyone is looking to get themselves in shape for the summer they will have to eat correctly. This doesn’t have to be made complicated. HEALTHY FOOD

Step one is to cut all the things we know are bad for us and step two is to simply eat healthy and natural food – this really is your best option. If your breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks can

“Many people give themselves unrealistic expectations of getting a bikini body”

52

be rich in vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, nuts and seeds, and if you combine that with good hydration you are moving in the right direction. Try to have more: l Vegetables, Fruit, Fish, Meat l Nuts, Seeds l Lots of Water EXERCISE

Try and mix things up exercise wise. Resistance training seems to be a form of training people avoid when trying to change lose weight and fat, though a mixture of both weight training and cardio is usually the most effective way to gaining better shape. We also have to accept that 3-4 exercise sessions per week is what we, need and some of those exercise sessions we have to push ourselves and raise that heart rate beyond what we are used to. Aim to do: l 3-4 x per week of varied exercise l 2 x per week higher intensity exercise l Mixture of weights and cardio

Eat healthy and natural food – this really is your best option

BEAUTY

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

I CURRENTLY DON’T HAVE A SKIN CARE ROUTINE. HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The best way is to ease your self into a basic three step routine, which requires cleanser, toner and moisturiser. The cleanser is used to clear away all the dirt, debris, sweat, bacteria and oil that collects on your skin throughout the day. A toner helps to bring your skin’s pH levels back to an acidic level and a moisturiser will keep your skin hydrated, plump and radiant. Once you have got to grips with this basic routine you could then think about adding an exfoliator, masque or serums. SHOULD I APPLY EYELINER TO THE ENTIRE EYE OR JUST THE OUTER CORNERS?

There is no one rule as everyone eye shape is different an both effects work well. When you use liner on just the outer corner of the eyes, it gives you a wide-eyed look, perfect for the day and good for those who have smaller eyes. When you line the entire eye it adds intensity and drama, giving a more night-time feel. No matter which look you are going for it is recommended that you thicken the line at the outer corner and smudge the line upward to create a lifted effect. Apply the liner close

54

to the lash line – it will help your lashes look thicker and fuller. Khol pencil is great for both techniques, giving a softer look. Liquid liner creates a sharper look, is longer lasting and is less likely to smudge or transfer. It is perfect for oily skin types and for giving longer lasting effects. HOW DO I GET THAT GLOWING SKIN LOOK FOR THE SUMMER?

Firstly, it’s important to have a good skin care routine and to exfoliate 1-2 times per week to ensure that you are getting rid of all the dull, dead skin. This will give you a great base, then follow these easy makeup steps to help your skin a healthy glow: l Apply face serum or primer to give you a perfect base. l Apply your foundation using a brush for a flawless finish. l Highlight your under-eye, brow, bridge of your nose and your Cupid’s bow with a highlighter/ concealer one shade lighter than your foundation, this will brighten your face and add a touch of definition and radiance. l Use a bronzer to contour the hollows of your cheeks, swiping your brush from just under the apple of your cheeks, all the way to your hairline. If you want this to look more pronounced, apply the bronzer across the top of the forehead and along the jawline. l To finish the flawless look add blusher to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards to your hairline. This will add extra definition to your cheekbones and make your skin look beautiful, radiant and glowing. n Vanilla August/September 2016

COLOUR CONFIDENCE Want to decorate your home with some big, bold colours but not sure where to start? DON'T FORGET THE BLACK This is an old adage in interior design. AVOID A CLASH Bright colours could jar with each other, but a pale grey flooring and a dash of black will ground them. The trick is to use big blocks of a plain colour and add the other colours in furniture and accessories.

HOW TO ‘DO’ VIBRANT COLOUR For a really striking room, you need to use several colours in one space. But you need to make sure to use them in equal measure or they will fight for attention. Red is the most stimulating of colours, team with white on woodwork and ceilings. For a stimulating room, try sunny yellows, but perhaps avoid in the bedroom! You need to be brave to use bold palettes, as they will reflect your personality. To some people, citrus type shades can appear zingy and fun, but to others they might verge on garish. If you’re not brave, use in small rooms like a cloakroom to create a sense of the “wow” factor. August/September 2016 Vanilla

JUST TILES

B

uying tiles can be a bit overwhelming with so many styles to choose from and a mistake can be costly. The internet offers tempting deals but the expertise and hands-on service from an established local firm is worth its weight in gold. Just Tiles is a family business based in Melton perfectly placed to help out. “Just Tiles was started by my father in 1998 and in the last ten years I have taken the reins of our family business,” Nathan Hall, one of the partners, told us. The company has built a reputation for excellent customer service, high quality products at competitive prices and they understand that swift delivery times keep them competitive, but that’s not all. Nathan explains the advantages of visiting their showroom. “We like to spend time with customers. People might go online in search of the cheapest deals but if you want to see and feel the tiles and ensure you have chosen the correct style, then our bespoke service can help with that.” The company has developed close working relationships with interior designers who bring their

64

Nathan Hall, taking the reins of the family business

own clients to the showroom, he says, and Just Tiles can put customers in touch with design professionals. The sample service is useful for those customers wanting tiles for a larger project and advice is offered not only on types of tile, from porcelain, ceramic and natural stone, but about accessories too. Just Tiles can recommend reputable tilers for their customers and their showroom also displays a range of hand built kitchen cabinets made by another local company, Heritage Coast Cabinet Makers. “I’ve just returned from a trip to Modena in Italy to research the latest technology and tiles – we deal with those factories direct,” says Nathan, adding that this helps the company provide a streamlined service whilst ensuring that the showroom carries the latest tile trends. “As a company, we are small

enough to spend time but large enough that we can deal with bigger jobs,” says Nathan. “People are price conscious but you need to find the tile you like and then we can see where you are with your budget and what we can do to help.” “We offer to arrange private viewings if clients want to come and spend a couple of hours in the showroom and I am more than happy to measure on site, all free and no obligation,” he adds. So, if your tiles are looking tired, drop in to their showroom or check out their website. This trusted local family business is perfectly placed to help you choose tiles to be proud of. ■ Just Tiles, Smithfield, Melton, Woodbridge, IP12 1NH. T: 01394 382067 www.justtileswoodbridge.co.uk

6. Carpet quality

What is the best carpet quality for you and your home?

● There are several types of carpet manufacture

and each has a benefit to you. Starting with the entry level Polypropylene carpets (known as manmade carpets) these normally come with felt backing and don't need underlay as they are fitted straight to the floor. Some ranges have an action backing so underlay is required. These are generally the lower end of the price scale and will have a shorter life span possibly 5-8 years of wear.

Axminster, the Rolls Royce of carpets

● Wool-based carpets are in my opinion the

most suitable for the home. There are a number of options: a wool mixture, 50/50 wool and manmade fibres to 100% wool. The pile also has different weights as well. The higher the pile weight the more wear the carpet can withstand. Wool carpets come with different backings, from manmade action backing to natural jute backing, and do require underlay. Combine a high wool content carpet with a jute backing and you will have years and years of excellent wear.

Manmade action backing

● For ultimate quality you will be looking at

Axminster or Wilton woven carpets. The carpets are normally heavily patterned and given the current trend for plain means they are less fashionable. Unfortunately the high costs of production means the use of Axminster and Wilton are most likely to be found in high end hotels and places such as Downing Street and Buckingham Palace! ● For more information on different carpet qualities or advice drop in to Archway Carpets or call 01394 386684. 30 years of experience at your feet really does give you #fashionforyourfloor.

KITCHEN BEFORE

THE DESIGNER TOUCH A different concept in kitchen design As more and more of us are staying put and improving our homes and with the many house programmes on TV inspiring us to refurbish, extend or self-build, kitchens are becoming the new must have accessory. But where do you start? One solution is to turn to an independent kitchen designer, who will ensure you receive unbiased advice as well as great design. We caught up with Sue Stenson of Purely Kitchen Design to find out a little bit more.

Going Independent allows you to be in control of your design and your budget and it is much more affordable than people assume. Your kitchen will probably be the most expensive purchase you will make for your home and it makes sense to get it right first time. Your own individual designer working solely for you! I’m often asked why pay for kitchen design when showrooms offer a ‘free design service’ of

68

course there are many good designers out there but most are tied to selling a couple of kitchen ranges, sales targets and the commission that generates. Only once you have made a financial commitment will they give out dimensioned plans or do further design work. My ‘Design First’ approach allows you to thoroughly explore all design options and be armed with a comprehensive ‘Design Pack’ that allows you to get as many ‘Like for Like’ estimates from as many suppliers as you wish. You’ll be surprised by how much these can vary, often far exceeding my design fee! For those that need help with colours or styles we can explore these together. If you are planning an extension or new build and are working from Architects drawings make sure you plan your kitchen early. There is nothing worse than a door or window in the wrong place which

will compromise your space and you may miss out on an island or bank of units you’re dreaming of. Today’s CAD packages bring rooms to life and give a really good representation of what the finished look will be. Sadly showrooms aren’t really that interested if your build is a long way off. Here is one of my recent redesign projects in Ipswich, with before pictures and after visuals. The brief was to modernise and open up the room by removing the peninsular, maximising cupboard space whilst keeping the room light and open and reusing several appliances. A dramatic difference!

Firstly, I think we’ll be seeing an explosion of everyday IPAs. The UK has embraced craft beer, with big flavour IPAs leading the way. However most of these brews are of high ABV – great for the occasional pint but not a good session beer. I think UK craft brewers and some of the bigger players will be producing big hop flavour IPAs but at a lower ABV, 4.5-5% for example. This is something we’ve seen happening in America and us Brits will be following suit. We stock a great new beer from Adnams which certainly fits this profile called “Ease Up IPA” which is part of their Jack Brand range. Currently craft beer accounts for 2% of the entire beer market, this may be small but it is having an impact on our industry and shows no sign of slowing down. I believe that this market share will at least double by the end of the year – exciting times for brewers and businesses like ours – and more of the established household brewers entering the market as well as the big retailers picking up on the trend too. www.thecrownatwoodbridge.co.uk

HE SHEPHERD in Langham, a stone’s throw from Ipswich, is a beloved and old-fashioned local country pub, sporting the very best of British fare with the warmest of welcomes. The landlord and lady, Richard and Esther, achieved their foodie reputation with a long stint at the Mistley Quay café. Since then they’ve brought their energy and enthusiasm for creating a lovely atmosphere with great food to Langham’s sturdy village pub. It’s informal and relaxed, a lively local bustling with atmosphere, alongside huge vases of lilies and quirky decoration – like the wall space covered with a huge Ordinance Survey map of the Suffolk estuaries, the sofas covered in vintage sacking. The pub is properly dog friendly and family centred – this is a place to bring friends for chatter and long languid suppers, or for a chilled glass of cider and a plate or two of food in the little sunny garden. The menu is imaginative and interesting, with homely favourites like fish and chips alongside specials like

trout fillet with sautéed new potatoes or calves liver and bacon with mash and rosemary jus. There are the classic pub dishes, rump steak with garlic mushrooms or Dingley Dell Pork Rump with mash and a cider cream sauce, as well as salmon or chicken salads topped with sunflower seeds and herbs, and specials using the best fresh and local in season ingredients.

HE FOOD is served on scrubbed antique tables in the bar or relaxed dining area. There’s delicious warm homemade bread served with olive oil and balsamic to tantalise before impressive portions of flavoursome food. The Shepherd lamb burger is served in a brioche bun with grilled halloumi, red onion marmalade and sweet potato fries. There are gorgeous sharing platters of sea food – zingy mackerel pate, lashings of smoked salmon and prawns and crayfish tails served with a zippy garlic mayonnaise, and a meat antipasti platter of Prosciutto ham,

salami, roasted peppers, artichokes, sun blushed tomatoes, olives, buffalo mozzarella. Succulent asparagus is served with a lemony hollandaise and a brightly poached egg, pan-fried garlicky prawns are dripping in deliciousness. Sicilian style mushrooms were a vegetarian delight stuffed with a caponata topping around fresh salad leaves. The desserts are just as impressive – raspberry bakewell tarte with Chantilly cream, a dreamy crème brulee with shortbread biscuit, Sicilian lemon pannacotta with blueberry compote, rich chocolate torte with raspberry coulis, traditional Eton mess or a wonderful cheese and biscuit platter. There are also ice creams and sorbets in a multitude of flavours and an old fashioned fish fingers style children’s menu for little eaters. Being a friendly local means there’s plenty going on – and there are some fun things on the horizon for the Shepherd – live acoustic music, family quizzes and village events, alongside the popular Sunday roasts. The Shepherd also has a private room for bookings of up to 24 people for a family gathering or business lunch. This is a village pub that is alive with life, refreshingly warm and happy, with lashings of good food, and definitely worth a visit.
