Makeup: Dionne helped to create a natural look for Karen. BB crème was used to even out skintone, eyebrows were defined and pastel spring colours were used to bring out the colour of Karen’s eyes. The makeup was completed with a pop of colour on the lips and a blush that gave a lovely fresh look. Styling – Karen has a wardrobe full of work clothes but was struggling to find a casual look that she felt good in. We coose some fab orange trousers and paired it with a silk elephant print top to create the look that Karen loved.

Karen said about her day: “I have been privileged to bring up my three children (who are all now adults) but somewhere along the way I have lost a sense of self, so to go on a Makeover Day which focused on me was a little daunting but totally uplifting. I tried a hairstyle that was different from anything I’ve had for a while and clothes which I would not normally choose and in the end felt like a very different person. Specialist leather store in Woodbridge

FTER multiple trips to Italy where they would admire the well-priced and beautifully made leather goods, Lindsay Furniss and her husband Ian decided they should open their own Italian-inspired specialist leather goods store. In May 2006 The Tannery was born and last year they opened their fourth shop in Woodbridge. Vanilla caught up with Lindsay to find out more about this lovely local business.

What is special about The Tannery?

The lovely scent of leather which we get a lot of comments about! Our customers like the variety we offer – the colours especially – and we have about 350 purses and wallets in different colours and leathers, to suit every price range. We spend time training the Tannery team so as to ensure

our customer service is secondto-none, offering guidance on our products, how they are made and how they should be cared for. Can you tell us about your favourite items?

For presents, our own accessories made in Florence and France are a special treat at an affordable price. The Tannery’s own range of handbags are made by two carefully selected family factories in Italy and they are colourful and stylish leather bags. I also love Texier handbags, which are made in France from beautiful leathers; my work bag is Texier and I have been using it constantly for years. We stock The Bridge range, which is made in Scandicci, just outside Florence, from beautiful Tuscan cowhide. Ian and I have seen these bags being made there – it is such a privilege to

Let in the refreshing breeze of change

How has your first year of trading in Woodbridge gone?

We have been delighted by how warmly The Tannery has been welcomed by the community and other local businesses. We seek to provide products that are not only useful, but are also gifts for that special person, or a treat for our customers themselves. There is no need to go to London when you have such great shops on your doorstep! We’re looking forward to our new Spring range of bags, shoes and accessories, due in store from the end of February: there's lots of beautiful things to discover so please do come and visit us. ■ The Tannery, 6 The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge IP12 1AG. 01394 388884 www.thetannery.co.uk

Woodbridge is a lovely town which Ian grew to know well during the time he spent as Finance Director of Notcutts. The similarity between Holt and Woodbridge and the opportunity of a shop in The Thoroughfare, near The Crown Hotel, which we both love to visit, provided the desire to open The Tannery.

BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

I

KNOW I regularly start my column with a weather report and you would be right to think I’m weather obsessed because when you run three fashion stores and you’re trying to satisfy your customers’ clothing needs, weather plays a very important part. We can get into a bit of a rut having worn the same outfits repeatedly and by this time of year we’re just ready for a change. So, when we get to February/March and the transition between Winter and Spring, we want something new and exciting to wear, but not quite ready for full on Spring/Summer. What I, and most other fashion buyers would really like, is a crystal ball to do our weather forecasting. For example; if we are engulfed in snow right now, we could bring you some fabulous ski-inspired knitwear or outerwear. If we were besieged by torrents of rain, I could top you up on new coloured wellies and fashionable rain coats, but we never know and because we are doing our buying so far in advance we have to keep guessing. Luckily, this year has been particularly mild and we have got just the right things to freshen you up and keep you toasty

30

Come rain or shine buyers need to be prepared!

or skirt. My other purchase will be new jeans, after all, these are currently the singularly most worn item in most winter wardrobes and for £’s per wear, a great investment. On the shop floor we are embracing our new stock and enjoying the transition through to summer, and mindful of how close we are to longer days, warmer temperatures and the exciting opportunities for dressing they bring. Layering and wrapping up warm can be great fun and I know a lot of my customers and friends prefer winter wear but personally I love summer clothing, I love the colours and the femininity, so bring on Summer. With my buying head on, my next bit of crystal ball gazing is, believe it or not, for next Winter. Just as the stores are moving from Winter 2016 to Spring, we buyers are already selecting your Winter 2017 collections. It’s all a bit muddling!! So, if any of you reading this are weather forecasters, clairvoyants or wizards, your advice would be very welcome!

Calling all clairvoyants? warm through Spring and into Summer. From fabulous pee coats and military inspired jackets to gorgeous silk shirts, zipping at the neck, or bejewelled knitwear – there are some really lovely mid-season pieces.

M

Y PERSONAL favourite method of heralding the change of seasons is a new handbag, and for me this season it’s got to be metallic, either silver or gold. Same with footwear, a great pair of silver ankle boots will do a brilliant job in brightening your current look without compromising on warmth and, as we move forward towards summer, they can be worn with lovely brown legs and a dress

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

C ARATS consult...

A short guide to engagement ring traditions and etiquette YES YOU CAN HELP PICK OUT THE RING

Tradition dictates that the proposer shops for the ring and surprises his or her intended with the bauble as a gift, but many modern women (and men!) would prefer to have some say in the style of the ring. And in 2017, that’s totally fine; you can go shopping together, suggest designers, send inspiration, whatever you like. After all, if you’re the person wearing it, you should like it! YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A DIAMOND SOLITAIRE

The classic diamond solitaire is really the original ‘engagement ring’. The singular stone initially came about as a form of insurance to protect women in the event that a suitor decided he no longer wanted to marry her; of course, this way of thinking is largely outdated nowadays, as is the rule that a diamond solitaire is the way to go. Contemporary jewellery designers now create engagement rings with unique stones and design elements, often foregoing diamonds altogether. The most important thing is to feel comfortable with a ring that suits you.

PAYING FOR THE RING

Tradition stipulates that the proposer pays for the ring. But since, ideally, you are entering into a partnership with someone who you consider your equal, why not also share equal responsibility with the purchase of the ring? Of course, if you want to be gifted the ring, there’s nothing wrong with that, but if you do want to help pay, the gesture will likely be appreciated. HOW MANY MONTHS SALARY ON A RING?

There are old ‘salary rules’ that a man should spend two or three months of his salary for your ring. This stems from an advertising campaign run by DeBeers in the 1930s – created to drive sales of diamonds – and has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of tradition. Couples should only spend what they can afford. FAMILY HEIRLOOMS

Heirloom engagement rings are not only symbolic of the giver’s love; they are also full of tradition

and family memories. Make sure other family members agree with the decision, however, so there's no familial strife over who possesses the jewellery. Also be sure to make provisions for the ring to be returned to the family in the event the relationship does not work out! IF YOU BREAK IT OFF, OFFER TO RETURN THE RING

If something sours and you decide to break off the engagement, you should at least offer to return the ring, particularly if it was gift. If you helped pick out the ring or even helped pay for it, ideally you’ll return the ring and split the financial gains. RING PLACEMENT

Modern tradition dictates the engagement ring be worn on the ring finger of the left hand. After the wedding, the wedding band is traditionally worn closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on top of it. For more advice on wedding rings, see page 42

REAL LIVES

“Now they were reunited, John and I knew that our dad would have wanted David to have equal shares in everything with us.”

Making changes to the beneficiaries of a Will HOW IT WAS SOLVED: MY PROBLEM: A few months ago, sadly, my father passed away. My brother, David, and he had not been close, or actually spoken, for a number of years following a big row. My dad hadn’t even met his grandson until quite recently. As a result of their falling out, Dad had cut my brother out of his Will. I’m thankful to say they recently resolved their differences and he was so delighted to have met his grandson of whom he quickly became very fond. At this point, however, he was too ill to change his Will so as to include David again. ANNE, IPSWICH

38

My mum had already passed away a number of years ago and so Dad left everything in his estate to my other brother, John, and me. We knew, though, that had he been capable in the last few weeks of his life, he definitely would have wanted to leave a share to David too. The joy that the reconciliation with David and David’s son brought him towards the end was truly wonderful. Dad had made his Will with Barker Gotelee in Martlesham. We obviously needed to contact them about dealing with Dad’s estate anyway, but thought Vanilla February/March 2017

it worth asking if there was anything that could be done with regards to including David. I phoned and was put through to a really lovely solicitor called Ann-Marie Matthews. She was so understanding and seemed genuinely concerned about our situation.

W

e arranged to meet and she explained that there are many instances where children are left out of their parents’ Wills but, fortunately, if it is known by the beneficiaries that it was the deceased’s wishes to include an additional beneficiary, then a Deed of Variation can be put in place. Ann-Marie said that Deeds of Variation are used for a number of reasons such as tax advantages in terms of Inheritance or Capital Gains Tax payable, asset protection and care fee planning or, in this case, to provide for somebody who was left out of the Will. It was such a relief to know that something could be done about the situation. John and I knew that our dad would have wanted David to have equal shares in everything with us. Ann-Marie drafted all of the necessary documentation, explaining that the variation must clearly identify the elements of the estate that are being varied, and state who is to benefit from the variation. John, David and I then had to sign to authorise the changes. The total value of Dad’s estate was below the Inheritance Tax threshold (currently £325,000) February/March 2017 Vanilla

and so this wasn’t a concern, but Ann-Marie did ensure that the necessary statutory references were included in the variation in order to be certain that no Capital Gains Tax issues arose. When completed, a copy of the revised document was sent to John, David and me and the original is held at Barker Gotelee.

C

learly, we wouldn’t have dreamt of going against Dad’s wishes and changing his Will had we not been certain that this was what he wanted. Also, it wouldn’t have been possible to do so had John not been in agreement too.

Anne-Marie explained that all beneficiaries must agree to any variation. I was fearful that we would make matters extremely complicated if were to simply gift a share of our inheritance to David. Being able to vary the Will has made things so much more straight forward and as Dad would have wanted them to be. I feel so hugely relieved and far more at peace with everything now, knowing that Dad’s last wishes have been honoured. I can’t thank AnnMarie enough for the support and guidance she’s given us and for providing a solution to a very difficult and uncomfortable situation. ■

THE VENUE

Choosing your wedding venue will undoubtedly be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as an engaged couple, so it’s good to start considering your options right away. First and foremost, decide on the type of wedding you want. Next, set a budget with careful consideration as to how much you can afford for your dream venue. Are you going to be looking at venues with large capacities or is a more intimate and low-key affair more your thing? That said, if you are planning a wedding in just a few months, there’s plenty of last-minute bargains to be had and you might get a date due to a cancellation or last-minute availability, especially if you’ll consider marrying mid-week. Milsoms have a list of late availablity dates on their wedding website: www.milsomweddings.com

The Open Day gives couples the chance to tour the 14th Century Hall and Barn that can host up to 140 guests for a ceremony and wedding breakfast. The event provides a great opportunity to sample some canapés as well as free prosecco for the first fifty guests through the door. Everyone will get a goodie bag to take away with them. The Weddings Team, will be on hand to check availability, talk through catering options and answer any questions that may arise. There will also be some special offers running exclusively at the Open Day. The event is free to attend and there’s no need to book ahead.

Although the average cost of a wedding has dropped considerably since 2008 when it was over £20,000, in 2016 most happy couples still forked out an average of £15,500 for their nuptials. If you’re getting married on a shoestring perhaps it’s time to get creative? Do you know someone with a house or garden big enough that would happily host a wedding or have you checked out your local village hall? You can hire just about anything these days, from vintage crockery to tables and chairs, candleabras to photobooths... have some fun, your guests will love it! loulouloves.org.uk / vintageweddinghire.co.uk hiddengemhire.co.uk

BOUQUET PRESERVATION

When you have taken months choosing the perfect bouquet, why throw it away! Why not have your wedding bouquet preserved and framed for a lasting keepsake of your special day? Preserved flowers make great thank you gifts so you can also have your bridesmaids posies, grooms button hole or corsage framed as well. PETAL CONFETTI

WEDDING RING RULES

1. NARROW YOUR CHOICES

Make some preliminary choices before you hit the stores. What colour metal do you prefer: yellow, white or rose? Work these questions out to home in on what you are looking for. 2. START YOUR SEARCH EARLY

Give yourselves at least two months to browse, research, price and revisit rings that catch your eye. Allow even more time if you’re interested in a custom piece; extras such as engraving can take up to one month. 3. BE DIFFERENT

Don’t fret if you like platinum while he likes yellow gold. There’s no rule that you have to match metals or even styles. Pick wedding bands that reflect each of your style sensibilities and tastes. However, some aspect of the rings (which can be as simple as an inscription) should match. 4. SET A BUDGET

A plain 14k gold ring starts at around £300. Obviously, diamonds can add considerably more to the cost. The price of engraving the inside of the wedding band depends on the font and on whether you have it engraved by hand or machine. 5. BE PRACTICAL

Keep your lifestyle in mind at all times. Remember, you’ll be wearing this band every day. The idea is to choose something that seamlessly becomes a part of your life. If you work with your hands often, look for a streamlined ring with little to no frills. Don’t be afraid to be trendy, but make sure the style you choose is something you’ll still want to wear in 20 years (not to mention to all the jobs, PTA meetings and social functions in between).

3. MAKING CHANGES

Registering is free and simple, and can be done online or by phoning or visiting your local store.

You can change your mind at any time, even after your Gift List has opened. It’s easy to make the adjustments online.

2. THE FUN PART

You can either do this online or pop into the Gift List department where they give you a scanner and the advisors are always on hand to help. PEOPLE

Happy Mother’s Day to a...

SUPERMUM! Before

To celebrate Mothering Sunday, local salon Michael Richards and Vanilla decided to find a deserving mum to enjoy a hair and makeup makeover and asked St Elizabeth Hospice if they could recommend one of their hard-working nurses who would enjoy a treat. And here she is, the very lovely Harriet Mee – a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the HOSPICE AT HOME TEAM – our lucky recipient! TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK?

I have been a nurse for nine years. I joined St Elizabeth Hospice a year ago where I now work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Hospice at Home team. My job involves caring for people with a lifelimiting illness in their own homes, often enabling them to remain there comfortably at the end of their lives. If I make even a tiny difference

in their journey then I feel I have accomplished something, however small. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE YOUR CAREER WITH BEING A MUM?

With two of my three children away at university I now have more time for myself. Getting the work-life balance right is not always easy but you learn to manage on what time you have and find ways to unwind that work for you. HOW WAS THE MAKEOVER?

SARAH ROWLAND SALON OWNER:

Harriet had nice length hair so rather than cut a lot off we decided to update the style by putting some texture and body in through layers. Her natural tones were enhanced with four shades of highlights – natural blondes for a softer look, and warm tones to give depth. After blow-drying the look was completed by putting in some lovely soft curls.

44

Enormous fun! I wasn’t sure what to expect but it all went really well. Sarah and I discussed what they might do with my hair – I didn’t have much taken off the length but they transformed the style with new highlights and layers. After I had my makeup done by Victoria there was a mini photo-shoot which was such a giggle. I felt so pampered. Michael Richards were brilliant, listening to what I wanted with utmost professionalism throughout. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Vanilla February/March 2017

VICTORIA BRADFIELD PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST:

Harriet had great skin so I simply colourmatched the foundation to even out her skin tone. I kept the colours quite neutral and applied these techniques: ● subtle smokey grey shadow on the outer corner of the eyes enhanced with shimmer on the inner corner ● eyeliner used along the top and across two thirds of the bottom ● soft pencil strokes to enhance the eyebrows which help frame the eyes ● natural lip look using a soft pink pencil and a hydrating lipstick ● a sweep of blusher, for a healthy look and to enhance the bone structure DID YOU TAKE YOUR NEW LOOK OUT FOR THE EVENING?

After

We did go out on the evening of the makeover. After all, who wouldn’t want to show off such a great result?

A big thanks goes to... Hair: Michael Richards Salon 01473 723814 Make-up: Victoria Bradfield 07775 662725 Photography: Sylvaine Poitau 07771 676722

HE WORLD of facial aesthetics has come a long way in the last ten years. Botox and such like, once just for the rich and famous, and only available in the big cities, are now everyday treatments and easily accessible to us ‘normal folk’. Not least here in Ipswich. Sarah Carless, Clinic Director at Health Counts, has witnessed the revolution and been at the vanguard of the industry here in Suffolk. Her clinic, Health Counts, has been providing Botox and Dermal Fillers since 2005, when it was the only place locally where people could hope to get these facial wonder treatments. “We have been established a long time and have a very large and loyal client base – we’ve been offering laser hair removal, with medical-grade lasers, since 1995 and facial aesthetics for over ten years now, so we think we’re pretty good at what we do!”

So how does a clinic like Heath Counts stay ahead of the game when so many new practitioners are popping up each year? For Sarah it’s simple: “Our mantra has always been to combine experience, qualified knowledge and the best patient care with

scare stories of widespread malpractice within the industry. “Investing in the best clinical expertise, equipment and training has always been our priority whether it’s in state-of-the-art lasers or in specialist treatments such as Obagi® skin peels.” Cue then, the latest member of the team. Renowned Harley Street Nurse Practitioner and Prescriber, Karen Hamberg, who has been lured to Health Counts to take over from Dr Sandy as she retires from aesthetic practice within the clinic, (though Sandy remains an active member of the laser team).

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Making your own makeup is not only kind to your bank balance, but kind to your skin as well

1. HIGHLIGHTER

2. LIP GLOSS

One way to resurrect a broken shimmer eye shadow is by transforming it into highlighter. Simply pour a small amount of the broken eye shadow into a small container, and then squeeze two – three pumps of body lotion into the shadow before stirring together. This will make the eye shadow creamy and easy to apply to the cheekbones, cupids bow and the nose tip.

If you need something to resurrect chapped lips in the winter, why not make your own rosy-tinted lip-gloss? Simply melt one tablespoon of chopped beeswax in a double boiler and stir until it’s entirely melted and smooth. Then add one tablespoon of Shea butter, two tablespoons of sweet almond oil and five drops of vitamin E oil and stir until the mixture is smooth and

50

glossy. Add a small chunk of an old lipstick and stir until the colour is absorbed into the gloss then pour into a container and leave to set overnight. 3. EYE LINER

Eyeliner may seem like a tricky product to make but it is actually a lot easier than you think. The main ingredient you need is activated charcoal, which can be purchased at most health stores. This product is natural but still be extra careful not to get it in your eye. Break a few of these capsules into a container then mix with a bit of oil (you can use almond, coconut, or aloe vera). You can turn it into a liquid, or leave it as it is for a kohl liner effect. 4. NATURAL BLUSH

Arrowroot powder can be purchased from online health retailers and it’s the perfect ingredient to make blush, face powder and even powder foundations. To make a perfect rosy blush, add a red plant-based powder (i.e. cranberry or beetroot poder). For a darker blush you could use for contouring, simply add a small dash

of cocoa powder or cinnamon. If you have a darker skin tone, using cocoa powder on its own would work well.

The perfect gift for a loved one this Valentines Day...

• Anti-wrinkle Injections • Dermal Fillers • Obagi Skin Care Systems • Dermaroller • Skin Lesion Removal • Medium and Superficial • Depth Chemical Peels

5. SKINCARE

Natural remedies make the perfect addition to your skincare routine and they are a lot more affordable than most brands. Raw honey is an amazing remedy for your skin. Simply spread across your face and leave for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. If you have acne, another great tip is to use one teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the raw honey, and leave on the face for an hour. Extra Virgin Olive Oil makes is a great natural remedy to use as a makeup remover. It contains antioxidants like Vitamins A and E, and it won’t clog your pores. Simply add a small drop to a cotton pad and gently wipe over your face. Then rinse with warm water and follow with your usual skincare routine. ww

What are the most common reasons people come to you for tattoo removal?

The most common reason is that they envisaged something different from their tattoo i.e. they expected a masterpiece and ended up with something more like a child’s scribble. There are joke tattoos that they don’t find funny anymore or dates and names that are no longer relevant. Some clients may have had a ‘cover-up tattoo’ which is even bigger and darker than before, making a bad tattoo even worse. Some clients want ‘fadedowns’ to create a blank canvas for a new design and others who are unhappy with the results of semi-permanent make-up – clients seeking help for misplaced or ‘block’ brows, migrating eyeliner and ‘joker’ lip line. What tattoo removal lasers do you use?

Safe and effective tattoo removal requires the use of a Q-Switched

February/March 2017 Vanilla

laser, these come in different wavelengths to treat different pigment types. At our clinic we use the Harmony XL Pro platform from ABC lasers. The Nd:YAG 1064nm laser is great for treating blue and black inks and holds double the power of any conventional Q-Switched laser. The double-frequency 532nm wavelength is more effective on red, orange and red/brown ink. I also have a Sinon QS Ruby 654nm, which I trained on in Germany, and is good for green, sky blue and blue-based colours. Another handpiece that I like to use is the Er:YAG 2940nm. When combined with QS lasers, it boosts pigment clearance and is effective on traumatic and multicoloured tattoos. Q-switched lasers produce a very short laser pulse in the nanosecond range which is much safer method than other lasers or IPL systems that emit energy. To avoid the risk of scarring, it is very important that anyone wishing to have a

tattoo removed makes sure their practitioner uses a Q-Switched device… so ask first. How many sessions do you need to get results?

There are a number of factors to consider such as the size and age of the tattoo, the colours used, how it was done (either professionally or by an amateur), and where it is placed on the body. Tattoos on the torso respond well to removal whereas when the tattoo is in an area where the circulation is not so good (ankles and feet) it can be much more difficult to treat. These factors will determine how many treatments are needed and over what period of time and how successful the outcome will be. As we know, dark colours (such as black and dark blue) respond best and yellow and fluorescent greens are much trickier. Treatment time can take anything from a few seconds to 30 minutes. The old school tattoos are more easily removed whereas

“I never thought I would have the confidence to appear in a magazine, my treatments at the Scultura Clinic have changed the way I feel, for the better.”

Other medications can also affect the treatment, including Roaccutane which can cause dermatitis and heightened skin fragility. Patients on bloodthinning medication, such as Warfarin, should consult with their doctor before undregoing treatment. The skin needs to be free from infection and inflammation before undergoing tattoo removal. Darker skinned patients have an added risk of losing some natural skin pigment through the removal process.

What aftercare do you recommend?

newer, better quality inks take more sessions. Amateur tattoos can sometimes be removed in just one session. Professional tattoos, more typically, take between one and 12 sessions for full clearance. Semi-permanent make-up with older ink takes one to three procedures and new brows with a large concentration

of ink can take three to 10 procedures. ‘Pink Salmon’ brows will oxidize first turning it dark and then removal can start. Can anyone have the treatment?

We do not treat people who are taking St John’s Wort, as this is highly photosensitive and can cause a reaction.

Most horror stories you hear regarding tattoo removal are because proper aftercare instructions have not been given or adhered to. During the first hour after treatment the patient needs to apply an ice pack to the area in order to minimize blistering and scabbing. The laser breaks up the ink but the body does the rest of the work by flushing it through the system. How fast the body can do this is partly dictated by the circulation. Regular exercise and stopping smoking are both ways to boost circulation and speed up the process. We also recommend patients stay out of the sun and wear skin protection. ■

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

MY NAILS ARE FLAKY AFTER I HAVE HAD GELS REMOVED. IS GEL RUINING MY NAILS?

Flaky nails may be caused by the gel-polish remover which your salon is using, as well as how long the therapist takes to soak your gel off and how expertly they are removed. The polish itself doesn’t cause your nails to go flaky, in fact it strengthens and helps them grow, as the gel acts as a protective layer. It is however advised that you let your nails “breath”, so to say, after having gels on for a while or when you feel like your nails need a rest. There are some great products around for rehydrating your nails: OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener and OPI Avoplex Nail & Cuticle Replenishing Oil. These are both great for strengthening, hydrating and nourishing nails. ARE THERE ANY TREATMENTS THAT CAN HELP ME TONE AS I REALLY DISLIKE GOING TO THE GYM?

There are lots of treatments available to help tone and boost inch loss and improve the appearance of cellulite. If toning is your main goal then I would suggest you have a course of professional body lifting and toning

treatments where pads are placed all over your body or on targeted areas and a micro current causes the muscles to contract. The process helps to tighten and tone your muscles – having the same effect as a gym workout. These treatments also improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of cellulite. If your goal is inch loss, then I would recommend trying a body wrap. There are several wraps available and they are great for making you look more toned and contoured. They help draw toxins out of the body, improving skin tone and texture, so you are effectively being treated from the inside out! Why go to the gym when you can be lying down feeling pampered and relaxed whilst toning your body? I know which method I would prefer!

MAKE-UP ALWAYS LOOKS TOO MUCH ON ME. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Why not have a makeup lesson? This will show you how to achieve a natural look and will make sure that you are using products which are suitable for your skin. It may simply be the way in which you are applying a product or using the wrong product. You could be using a foundation which gives a full coverage, when what you need is a foundation which gives you a medium, more natural coverage. During a lesson you will be able to ask questions about how to achieve a certain look and which colours and products suit your skin the best. ■ Vanilla February/March 2017

Q: I started my New Years resolutions to lose weight, exercise and not be so grumpy with the children. Of course by now it has all gone wrong. I feel like such a failure. A: This is because you have set yourself up

to fail and therefore you will. The behaviours that you are trying to change over eating, procrastination or anger are all coping mechanisms, a way of dealing with unwanted, often negative feelings about ourselves. We have a blue print in our subconscious mind of how and what we are. This is based on a core belief we have about ourselves which although buried deep in our subconscious governs our thoughts, actions and behaviours. It is like having the wrong or old address in our satnav or phone and following its instructions and expecting to find ourselves in a different place, a new more fabulous place. As humans we like to be right so we evidence-base what we think or believe. You may be a great parent 90% of the time but are focusing on the 10% where you are just good enough and you will be searching for examples of how bad a parent you are. But what if that thought is wrong? What if you flipped it over and looked for all the times you were a great parent and stopped putting yourself under unnecessary stress so that you could be. What if you change your thinking from “I AM a failure...” to “I AM a winner...”? Warning: side effects of believing this new thought could lead to higher self esteem, positivity and happiness.

Q: It’s that time of year again... Valentine’s Day, the day of happy couples and lovers. I’m in a long-term relationship and feel lonely, and unhappy. How can I change this?

qualities you would like in an ideal partner? Take a minute and write them down in no particular order. Go ahead be greedy and demanding in what you would like. I'll give you a hand here – mentally healthy will be top of the list probably followed by available, the rest is up to you. You may look at your finished result and see qualities like kind, funny, caring, sensual and thoughtful and be thinking I will never get all of these in one person, they don't exist. But look again at your list, are there any qualities on it that you don’t have yourself? Most of us will find that we are not asking for anything that we are not offering ourselves. So are you selling yourself short? Is there an actual deal breaker (relationship ender) on your list that is not done by your partner that needs to be? Communicate – tell them what you want/ need, they are probably not psychic, so let them know. If it is not possible for you to have your needs met then it is up to you to make the choice for what is best for your own happiness and mental health. Look at your list again and see how amazing YOU are and then find someone else that thinks you are too.

Patterned carpets can be used to create different interior styles, including modern and traditional living room schemes. Choose from elegant patterns, to bold geometrics and elongating stripes. ● Carpets can be used to create the illusion of space or make a room feel more cosy. For example, a horizontal-striped carpet fitted in two areas, such as a hallway and open-plan living room, will give the effect of a wider space. ● If you have a large living room and want to use patterned carpet to break up the expanse of floor space, consider fitting two different designs. Stripes, fitted in opposite directions, can be used to cleverly define a seating or dining area. ● And in a neutral scheme, it’s easy to add a little pattern with a subtle carpet design. It’s a great way to add texture to the design of your living room, too. ● Patterned carpet also gives you the opportunity to introduce more colour to a room than a plain neutral and really warm up the overall decorating scheme. ● If you’re feeling brave, introduce vibrant colour with bold deckchair stripes to lift a child’s bedroom or neutral living room. Or try colour-blocking with a bold shade for walls and another for floors such as dramatic deep blue on the walls, combined with a show-stopping red patterned carpet. Or even the New “wild” Chevron design. ● Shorter pile carpets are more hardwearing, making them a good choice for high traffic areas including the living room or hallway. Luxurious deep pile carpet is a great option for bedrooms, however it will need more care.

TheFoodie NEW TEAM AT ALDEBURGH DELI

Lawson’s Delicatessen in Aldeburgh has been popular with locals and visitors for many years and won numerous awards. After 10 years, founders Richard Lawson and Claire Bruce-Clayton are handing over the reins to new owners, Clare Jackson and John Omerod, a father and daughter team. Managing Lawson’s is a dream for Clare, who has a passion for cheese and the fantastic array of food and drink produced in Suffolk. Clare and John have been visiting Aldeburgh for over 30 years and Clare has recently moved to live near Woodbridge with her husband and young family. Clare and John share an ambition to reinvigorate the popular delicatessen. Clare

Jackson says “The more I learn about cheese the more I want to share that knowledge with others and to celebrate the incredible quality of artisan cheese produced in the UK. I’m also excited by the quality and diversity of food and drink produced in Suffolk from Pump Street Bakery’s bread and chocolate to High House’s delicious fruit. We will continue to support local producers.” Lawson’s Delicatessen, 138 High Street, Aldeburgh. 01728 454052

I

F YOU’RE stuck for ideas for a sumptuous gift for Valentine’s Day, look no further than chocolate. Research shows that sampling a chocolate induces sensations that could (possibly) be more pleasurable than listening to your favourite music, winning the lottery or falling in love. Chocolate gets right to the heart of pleasure by raising levels of the brain’s feelgood chemical serotonin which plays a major role in emotional health and relaxation. Chocolate was first discovered by the Mayans, they valued the cocoa bean above silver and gold, and even used it to trade with. They brewed a bitter-sweet brew from the beans which was reserved for the rich and their religious leaders during ceremonies of importance. The Aztecs were the first recorded people to use cocoa for its aphrodisiac properties. Their

Emperor Montezuma allegedly supped 50 cups of the bean beverage every day from a gold goblet and regarded it as a drink of the Gods. First discovered and initially overlooked by Christopher Columbus, chocolate was introduced to Europe in the 1520s after the Spanish conquered Mexico. It was brought to England in 1650 and served as a drink in the new Hot Chocolate Houses. It was not until the 19th Century that a chemist called CJ Van Houten patented an invention which enabled him to revolutionise chocolate manufacturing, changing it from a beverage to confectionary. This was the first step towards chocolate taking the form we know it as today. Chocolate has been presented as a gift ever since. Famously, Queen Victoria sent 2,250kg

to her loyal troops at Christmas as a thank you. The Valentine’s Day tradition of giving luxury chocolates to that special person was started by the Victorians in the 1860s in the now-familiar heart-shaped boxes.

C

HOCOLATE remains one of the most popular ways to say “I love you” on Valentine’s Day. Les Chocolats Belges, ‘The Woodbridge Chocolate Shop’, has a superb range of over 70 loose Belgian delicacies and prides itself on offering something for everyone. Visitors may sample a little piece of chocolate heaven, choose a special gift and have it beautifully wrapped. Or call the shop to order your present to arrive in time for Valentine’s Day. If your loved one has a special dietary requirement, Les Chocolats Belges has a selection including no added sugar, gluten free, lactose free and vegan. ■ Les Chocolats Belges, The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge 01394 386302 www.chocolatsbelges.com

Sam Simpson JMM Suffolk model agency

My East Coast Life Suffolk. I’ve already found five amazing ones!

JMM is a scouting/model agency, run by Samantha Simpson, formerly New Faces Director at Premier Model Management and fashion editor at Cosmopolitan magazine. At Premier, Sam worked with Naomi Campbell and managed the early modelling career of actress, Gabriella Wilde. After moving back to Suffolk, Sam discovered Vita West in the Wickham Market Co-op. She was soon signed to IMG and so far her list of credits include, Harpers Bazaar, Teen Vogue, Top Shop, as well as being a regular on the London Fashion Week catwalks. She has worked in London, Paris, Milan, Sydney and Barcelona. Over the last few years, Sam has run the Face of Suffolk model competition.

Show and Marks & Spencer magazine as well), I switched sides, to become a model agent.

Have you always lived in Suffolk? I was born here, I went to Ipswich High School and Felixstowe College. I spent over 20 years in London, but then came home six years ago, after I had our little boy. I love Suffolk!

How did you get involved in fashion? I started early, with work experience at the EADT when I was 16. I declined a place at university to go to London and pursue my love of magazines. Following a short secretarial course, I got a reception job at Elle magazine where I met so many of my industry idols. From there I joined the Cosmopolitan fashion team, After 10 years as a fashion editor (BBC Clothes

Is there a lot of untapped talent in Suffolk? Great models are rare. You need to be tall, with great bone structure, smart and grounded It’s often the quiet, studious girls that have what it takes. I can teach them how to walk in heels, to pose and build their confidence. Seeing their confidence grow, is one of the most rewarding parts of my career. Having said that: yes, there are a special girls in

What are your local hidden gems? I live in Ufford (probably the best village in the world), so the The Crown and The White Lion pubs are favourite haunts. We also have Red House Textiles here, Nick is the most fantastic interior designer. Clothes: Homespun in Woodbridge, I live in their cashmere, Jeannie Elms Sanctuary in Ipswich for an Indian head-massage and reflexology – she’s truly magical.

What’s next? Managing the existing JMM girls, I’m here for them 24/7, whenever they have a problem or need advice, to help organise their travel or to share their excitement about a new job. And of course, this years Face of Suffolk competition. I’m looking forward to finding our next great face and shall be scouting at local events.
