NEWS

ON YOUR BIKE!

If you like to explore Norwich on a bike, you’ll be delighted with the recent announcement that millions of pounds has been set aside to improve 20 miles of cycle paths in and around city, as part of £8.4m of government funding. More than 40 improvements will be carried to two routes – between Norwich International Airport and Lakenham, and from Sprowston to Wymondham – which both go through the centre of Norwich. So saddle up and take to the paths. It’s a great way to keep fit and get to know this beautiful city.

SAY GOODBYE...

A fond farewell to the city’s 15th female Lord Mayor, Judith Lubbock, who has been the Liberal Democrat councillor for Eaton since 1995. During her year in office, Judith focused on three passions; to promote the city’s parks and open spaces; to celebrate the city’s built heritage; and to encourage more walking and cycling. Her chosen Civic Charity appeal for the year was Cruse Bereavement Care, which provides advice, information and support to anyone who has been bereaved. A Londoner originally, Judith is married to solicitor Nigel and they have two children, Tom and Anna. April/May 2015 Vanilla

SAY HELLO... A warm welcome to Norwich’s 16th female Lord Mayor, Brenda Arthur. Brenda’s wide and varied experience makes her an ideal candidate for the role. She was elected as a city councillor in 2008 and leader in 2011. She has also been vicechair of the federation of Age Concerns and a trustee of Age Concern England. Brenda was

Sheriff of Norwich in 2005/06, and for eight years was a nonexecutive director of the Norfolk and Norwich hospital. She has also been involved with the Neighbourhood Renewal project at North Earlham and Larkman (NELM), Business Improvement District, Theatre Royal and Forum Trust. Brenda is married to Brian and has two children David and Gareth.

GET CRACKING!

For egg-streme Easter fun, why not keep your sunny side up by taking part in the Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) Easter Egg Hunt? From Saturday 28 March until Friday 10 April, a trail of Easter eggs will be hidden in 20 locations around Norwich city centre, displayed on posters, inside businesses or in windows. set up my own business to provide a service for ladies who want style on a budget. Lynsey’s beautiful boutique is based in Sprowston and offers a wide range of new and pre-owned womenswear, handbags, shoes, jewellery and accessories. “I have a strict policy as to what pre-owned pieces I will buy for the boutique. They must be a genuine designer brand and in pristine condition” Lynsey has built up her substantial client list of primarily professional women aged 24-55 through monthly, invitation only events, whereby existing clients can introduce friends. If a new customer wishes to attend they can request an invitation. You can contact Lynsey on 01603 419898. Invitation only Address on request.

Shhh! don’t tell anyone, but for those who love the style and quality that only designer brands can offer and at affordable prices; Alana’s Boutique is an exclusive ‘By Appointment’ only shop in Norwich and is growing a dedicated and discerning client base. Established 18 months ago by former Facilities Manager Lynsey Bradley-Foster, Alana’s Boutique is simply an Aladdin’s Cave of top designer names including; Chanel, Michael Kors, Christian Dior, Mulberry, Jaeger and Vivienne Westwood. Owing to Lynsey’s incredible purchasing ability and knack for sourcing top designer items, the products cost substantially less than the recommended designer retail prices. She said “It really all began when a friend asked me to source a specific Karen Millen dress for an exclusive event she was attending. I dedicated myself to achieving this for a fraction of the price and together with my passion for excellence, I decided to

A

S AN ECLECTIC vintage dresser myself, I feel that as wonderful as some of the extremely popular looks are – such as the pin-up or the classic forties sweetheart look – there seems to be a real fashion movement happening right now that makes vintage feel more accessible for everyone to experiment with.

Lovering & Co

William Wilde @ Proudlock & Harry

As I, and the show stylist Karen James-Welton (aka Fabulous Miss K), are so passionate about vintage style being something anyone can enjoy, the show was never destined to be like a tea dance. With the show having an Eastern theme – also a key look for fashion trends this year– some glorious prints and kimonos were showcased along with bespoke headwear from ready to wear delicate tiaras by Samantha Walden to more couture pieces by Betsy Hatter. One of my personal favourite looks was a kimono and

dungaree combination from Lovering & Co. It’s that brave mixture of style that for me really demonstrates vintage fashion can be fun and individual. The final set of the show included the latex wonders of British designer William Wilde courtesy of Proudlock and Harry, which wowed the audience with some beautiful high waisted lingerie which always puts me in mind of the iconic Bettie Page. But closing the entire show was burlesque extraordinaire Natalya Umanska for which pictures speak louder than words…

Kerry Curl (aka Missy Vintage) sits on the Norwich Fashion Week Board and is the Vintage Show co-ordinator. When not working on Norwich Fashion Week, Kerry also blogs on Missy Vintage and is currently studying BA (Hons) Photography at The Norwich University of the Arts. Missyvintageblog.com

HERE ARE many reasons I enjoy being involved with Norwich Fashion Week. Whilst my love for fashion and Norwich are undeniably strong, another reason is it allows people with various fashion tastes to come together and celebrate the diversity of style the city has to offer. Norwich Fashion Week takes a whole year to plan with each of the four main shows having their own distinctive style. Following on from the sell-out Vintage Show of 2014 we returned to The Puppet Theatre again for 2015, with not one but two shows. The 2015 Vintage Show, sponsored by Wex Photographic, was designed to be about vintage looking forward as much as it was about looking back at past styles.

How to...

pull it out of the

HAT

for the SOCIAL SEASON Wearing a hat can be a real head turner if you are attending an event like Fakenham Races. Here our experts are under starter’s orders with their advice. By Sheree Hana

W

ITH THE SOCIAL EVENTS season almost upon us it is time to get your hat on especially if you are planning a trip to Fakenham races and its increasingly popular Ladies Day. Hats are currently having

something of a renaissance thanks to the Duchess of Cambridge whose panache for wearing smaller-style hats

because they are such a fashion statement. “The important thing is for a hat to be comfortable, to be able to see your face as you don’t want to be looking out from underneath it and allows people to give you a kiss without knocking it off.”

“Hats are noticed more than any other fashion item and perhaps more important, they’re almost always remembered” The Century of Hats book

is being emulated by younger women. Jarrold’s Personal Stylist Lucy Hurrell helps her customers find a hat for special occasions. She said: “People wanting to wear hats are definitely getting younger

Milliner Jojo Kemp has been designing and creating hats for customers not just in Norfolk but across the UK for the past 25 years. Last year Jojo was responsible for creating the hat worn by the winner of the

FACE UP TO IT

Best Dressed competition at Fakenham Ladies Day. She said: “For an event like Fakenham Races, hats should be sophisticated and glamorous. It can feel very sexy wearing a hat and I think people should have fun with the whole concept of wearing one.” TIPS FOR WEARING A HAT ● Find your outfit first so that you can co-ordinate what hat will look best with it. ● Try on lots of different styles to eliminate the ones you really don’t like and make sure it is something you feel comfortable in especially if you are going to wear it all day. ● Once you have your hat, wear it while you are doing the washing up or the vacuuming. Like a new pair of shoes, it will feel more comfortable if you get used to it being on your head. ● Let the hat make the statement – choose a simple outfit so the hat can do all the talking.

We are all blessed with different shaped faces and in the event you need to wear a hat for an occasion it is a good idea to first understand what shape yours is and what styles suit it.

● There are five face shapes

● Keep jewellery to a minimum.

Less is definitely more when wearing a hat. ● Hats don’t have to be big to be dramatic – head pieces or fascinators can be equally eye catching. ● The brim of a hat should never be wider than the wearer’s shoulders and never be worn below the eyebrows – ideally it should sit half an inch above them. ● Classic colours such as navy, silver, grey and black are in vogue every year but also look out for pops of colour such as orange, lemon and hot pink.

A DAY AT THE RACES

A day’s racing is an exciting day out for people of all ages and from all walks of life. Fakenham prides itself on its friendly, casual atmosphere and it has no formal dress code, but on Ladies Day – Sunday 31st May – hundreds will be dressing to impress. With prizes for Best Dressed Lady, Best Hat and Best Dressed Couple there’s an extra incentive to look one’s very best! And there's a special Fillies Package which includes strwberries and cream and a glass of Pimms, for only £28! See you there! See opposite page for more details.

women generally have. Softer faces are round, oval or heart shaped and angular faces are either square or rectangle/oblong.

● A good way to determine what face shape you have is to stand in front of a mirror and draw around the reflection of your face using a kohl pencil or felt tip pen.

● Angular faces tend to suit hats made from stiff fabrics with a flat or point crown and straight brims such as peaked caps, berets and hats with a brim.

● Soft faces suit hats made of softer fabric with rounded or domed crown and a curved brim such as baker boy hats, and can don feathers and decorations.

“You may think your family and finances are straightforward but where there is no Will, family arguments often arise after death”

Am I too young to consider making a Will? MY QUESTION: Should I consider making a Will? I’ve always assumed that it is only necessary for elderly people and not something you necessarily want to think about in your 30s or 40s (as I am) but is it a sensible thing to do, regardless of your age? Also once a Will has been written, is it set in stone or can changes be made? I am sure that my family’s circumstances will change over the years, so the Will may become out of date.

36

A

T STEELES LAW, we recommend that everybody should make a Will, whatever their age, wealth or family circumstances. It may not be a very cheerful or comfortable topic but it is an important one. If you do not make a Will, the ‘Intestacy Rules’ set out who is entitled to deal with your affairs after your death and who receives your money and property – and this may not necessarily be who you want. For example, depending on the value of money and property in your sole name, your spouse

(if you are married) may not receive all of your money and property on your death – and if you are cohabiting, your partner has no right to anything under the Intestacy Rules. You may think your family and finances are straightforward but where there is no Will, family arguments often arise after death – for example as to which of your family members should deal with the formalities and what was ‘promised’ to whom. By making a Will, you can say who will receive your money and property after your death and Vanilla April/May 2015

REAL LIVES

name ‘executors’ to carry out your wishes and deal with all of the paperwork. YOU CAN ALSO:

■ Leave gifts of money or items to friends or charities ■ Name guardians to look after infant children and trustees to look after their inheritance ■ Provide for dependant or disabled children or relatives ■ Protect your money and property in case of your spouse or partner remarrying or going into residential care ■ Make substitute provisions in case any of the people named in your Will dies before you ■ Make tax-efficient arrangements for the passing of business property ■ Make arrangements for your pets Once you have made your Will, you can and should continue to update it if your family or financial circumstances change. This needs to be done formally, either by making a new Will or, if the changes are minor, by way of a ‘Codicil’, a document that amends, rather than replaces, a previously executed Will. It is especially important to do so if you: ■ Marry, as marriage revokes existing Wills ■ Move in with your partner ■ Buy or sell a home ■ Start a family ■ Inherit substantial sums of money and/or property ■ Start a business, or your April/May 2015 Vanilla

existing business expands or contracts ■ Become divorced or separated ■ Have an accident ■ Suffer from, or develop, a long term or terminal illness

W

HEN DRAFTING your Will, we would always recommend that you engage a qualified legal adviser. ‘DIY’ or online Wills can seem a financially attractive alternative but it is important to remember that your Will is a legal document, which will be relied upon in the event of your death. Sadly, we often receive

enquiries from family members who have been left to deal with the consequences of a poorly drafted Will, which can lead to upset and in the worst cases, expensive disputes over ‘who gets what’. At Steeles Law, we understand that your Will is probably the most important legal document you will ever sign, so it is vital that you are happy with its content. Our legal practitioners, who have many years of experience and include Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners members, will take the time get to know you and understand your needs. ■

We are here to help... For further advice on this issue or to obtain a quote for us to arrange a Will, please contact the Wills and Probate team at Steeles Law. Our specialists, Ruth Pyatt (top right) and Cathy Savvas (below right) are on hand to help.

Lady Cordelia testdrives...

The cultured, feminine perspective on automobiles of the day

Time to go topless? DRIVING WHAT USED to be called a ‘soft top’ is now a far cry from those rag-roofed machines of yesteryear, especially when the vehicle in question is of the supreme quality and build associated with Mercedes-Benz. Long gone are the twisting bodies and shaking chassis, the cold drafts and manhandling bits of roof to achieve the open air above one’s head. No, this is luxurious motoring. The roof is a work of art in itself – it folds in such a way that there remains plenty of boot space so a week away at the health spa with cousin Hermione’s kit will not cause a problem. The heating and ventilation system provides all the creature comforts, even to the extent that there is the option of ‘Airguide’ heating for the neck, built in to the seats. As a touring car, comfort has to be paramount and here there is no question. The seats beckon, and they feel just as good as they look. The

Matching accessories

driving position and the view of the dash and controls is typically Mercedes-Benz; everything is to hand and logical, so that long drive becomes effortless. Noise insulation has also been high on the list of design priorities. Driving with the roof closed, will feel no different to an ‘ordinary’ car. Whether top up or down, this is a true quality vehicle and a wonderful long distance cruiser. The performance need hardly be debated but with the diesel engine and automatic transmission, the acceleration is a breathtaking – 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, and the top speed is definitely only for the autobahn!! The list of safey features is almost as impressive as the

In fact there are so any features and options that it is useful to note that the staff at Robinson’s have an encyclopedic knowledge of the SLK and will guide you through. Driving with the top down doesn’t get much better than this and the SLK ticks all the other boxes too. I would want this car just to been seen in... it simply exudes style. ■ www.mercedes-benzofnorwich.co.uk

ORWICH’S VERY OWN answer to the popular ITVBe series, The Millionaire Matchmaker, has launched in the city and is working hard to bring lonely hearts together with

making a big hit in the city with those who are ready to find love. The idea for Elite Matchmaking came to Judith through her work as a professional life coach. Judith 49, who lives in Hethersett, has for the past six years run her life coaching agency Dare To Fly, which offers a whole raft of services aimed at helping people get the most from both their personal and professional lives. “The idea came to me after I spent quite a bit of time coaching people with relationship issues such as break-ups and divorce,” explained Judith. “The clients I had successfully coached through these problems were then turning to me and asking ‘OK, so I am ready to get

“We deliver a holistic approach to dating and relationships – members are supported and encouraged” its bespoke services and holistic approach to dating. Matchmaker Judith Flowerday (pictured above) is the brainchild behind Elite Matchmaking and like the TV show, which features Patti Stanger’s Los Angeles Millionaire’s Club, Elite’s fully-paid members do have the option of tailored introduction events such as cocktail and dinner parties. However, unlike the show members do not need to be super wealthy! The icing on the cake is that clients are treated to a personal and confidential service in a bid to help them find love and unlike online dating services they are also offered a whole array of ancillary services to assist in making them relationship ready. Consequently, Elite is already April/May 2015 Vanilla

back on the dating scene again, have you got any nice friends or business contacts you can introduce me too?’” “I love people to be completely happy when they leave me and I felt quite frustrated that at the time I could not assist them

further.” So, Judith then set about establishing a personal introduction agency which had a unique offering providing clients with a comprehensive range of enhanced services. Elite Matchmaking can thus provide life and relationship coaching, mental and spiritual well-being support, style and image advice, skincare and make-up tuition, personal grooming advice and personal training. “Customer service is of paramount importance to me and I like to ensure that our clients feel protected and cared for,” said Judith. “Unlike other agencies we pride ourselves on delivering a holistic approach to both dating and relationships whereby our members feel both supported and encouraged. “The reaction has been great and our clients really appreciate our values and the personal service we can offer. Our aim this year is to assist even more people to be ready for healthy, happy relationships and to buy my first hat!” ■ BY SHEREE HANA

Judiths top five tips for dating... ➊ DEAL WITH any insecurities or fallout from previous

relationships before you start dating, so you don’t drag baggage along with you.

➋ BE AUTHENTIC. Don’t ever pretend to be somebody you’re not simply to impress your date or to cover up a lack of confidence.

➌ BE SAFE. Always. ➍ DON’T HAVE sex on the first date. You’ll change the dynamic. Wait until you get to know each other a little better.

➎ DON’T TAKE it personally if your date doesn’t wish to see you again. Not everybody is going to be your soulmate.

T LOOKS AS IF our love affair with the beard shows no sign of abating, so to satisfy demand – gentlemen’s grooming experts SWAGGER & JACKS – have launched two new beard oils which ensure beard-wearers smell as good as they look. Mark Young, a master barber with more than 30 years’ experience in the hairdressing and male grooming industry, is the founder and creative director of Swagger & Jacks. “A beard oil is an essential part of any beardwearer’s morning grooming routine,” Mark explains. “A good beard oil will soften the whiskers to lessen the discomfort of the early stages of beard cultivation. Night time can be particularly uncomfortable for new beard growers, when short bristles press against a pillow and into the skin. Applying beard oil daily will help to reduce this discomfort.” Swagger & Jacks ULTIMATE BEARD OIL and PREMIUM BEARD OIL are both infused with signature colognes so that the wearer can apply their chosen fragrance at the same time as conditioning their skin and whiskers. REAL LIVES

THE VANILL A MAGA ZINE AGONY AUNT

It’s 2015: Start creating the life YOU want! DEAR JENNIFER... I consider myself to be a rational, intelligent and confident woman but whenever my mother-inlaw visits, I find myself feeling increasingly wound-up with panic setting in. I don’t want to subscribe to the mother-in-law cliché but she winds me up with her constant digs about my lack of cooking skills, comments on the children’s behaviour and how I should really be staying at home rather than working because maybe then, I’d have a tidier house and better behaved children! My husband doesn’t do much to ease the situation, looking like a rabbit in headlights. How do I get through these weekend visits without saying something I’ll regret and with my sanity intact?! Amelia HI AMELIA... Oh how I don’t envy you. However, how these visits pan out, is entirely in your hands. Firstly, you don’t have to invite your in-laws – think about it, you really don’t. If you choose to, it is because it sits better with your values and if this is the case, do not merely endure the day, it is your precious weekend

too. Perhaps your mother-in-law is out of her comfort zone when she’s not in her own home; maybe assign her a cooking task explaining that you’d really value her input and that way she may feel a bit more useful. Ask your husband to perhaps be a bit more involved in the day, maybe by chatting to his mother or keeping the children occupied so that the noise levels are kept to a dull roar. It is your house, your space so ensure you feel in control; it is your choice as to whether you enjoy the day so take steps to avoid the angst every time you know they are visiting. Good luck and be strong! Jennifer x DEAR JENNIFER... Now that we’ve left the winter months behind and are coming into Spring, I find myself doing more and more navel-gazing. I am currently single and so far, my relationship history has been disastrous. Usually my partners either seem to become disinterested in me or are quite controlling which I suppose is due to my lack of confidence. I’m not one of life’s cheerleaders in

the looks and moves department and I also worry that my conversation can be dull. I’m not asking for much – just someone who enjoys my company; someone to have a laugh with. I’m sure I’m not a hopeless case but sometimes I do wonder…! I’d appreciate your advice. Ellen

HI ELLEN... It’s important that we

value and love ourselves because our self-image determines what we get. Life will never be better than your self-image allows it to be so if you see yourself as a downtrodden, boring person – that’s what you are projecting to others and they in turn are more likely to respond accordingly. Focus on appreciating the great things about yourself - write them down if you need to. The only thing that stands between you and the ideal life you would love to live is YOU, so start working on your self-image and reap the rewards. Release the unhelpful thinking patterns which are holding you back and instead, create positive habits that will take you forward – this time next year, you’ll feel a different person! Jennifer x

pHformula Treatment at Spruce House REVIEW: ALICE MANNING

A new generation of skin resurfacing has left us amazed, especially as it can be experienced on your lunch hour.

➊ THE LOWDOWN

This takes conventional acids used in chemical peels and switches them up a gear. Each pHformula product contains high levels of active ingredients with an advanced delivery system. This powerful duo allows the acids to travel deep within your skin to get to work where vital cell regeneration, repair and turnover takes place. Bypassing the skin’s surface means zero downtime; no redness and the ingredients continue to work for longterm results.

➋ THE PROCESS

Everything about this treatment is tailor-made. Whether your concern is acute redness, acne, fine lines or dullness Claire Williams, the owner, and her team make it their mission to give every client a bespoke treatment. “As well as using our expert eye, asking the client’s concerns and goals we also ask them to look in a mirror to pin-point any specific problems,” says beauty therapist

52

Claire. A cleanser is used before a mask (the SP Complex) is applied to prep the skin. This is to ensure an even absorption of ingredients and to test for any sensitivity. It is only left on for two minutes and feels warm and tingly. We love the attention to detail throughout the treatment – the therapist never leaves the room, the lights are left on for close inspection and cooling fans are on-hand. The prescribed products are then layered on top and again it will feel slightly tingly. One of the best bits of the treatment is a soothing foam mask which is left on for five minutes, while you are given a blissful hand, foot and arm massage. Once removed, a moisturiser – the Post Recovery Cream – a SPF30, UVB and UVA high protection cream, is massaged in. Before you leave, CC Cream, (also with SPF 30 and in a light, medium or dark shade) can be applied for coverage.

Your eye make-up is still intact so you can apply your lippie and go. No redness, no peeling, no discomfort.

➌ THE RESULTS You immediately look fresher and more radiant. The products continue to ‘drip feed’ the skin with the active ingredients meaning you will see results for up to three weeks. A word of warning – it’s fair to say that your skin has to get worse before it gets better. By working deep within the skin any breakouts or problem areas may be accelerated, but they will come and go and once this phase has passed the results are incredible. ISTORIC BURNHAM MARKET and the mysterious Black Horse… Wild, Rampant, Old. These are all variations of the past name of the building that will soon be home to Foras Walls and Floors and Jem Lake Kitchens both homemade Norfolk businesses. The history of the building is interesting with records showing in 1863, Benjamin Habberton, Saddle and Harness Maker as resident of the public house, the ‘Wild Horse’. Then many years later a William Allen, well-known beer retailer; boot and shoemaker takes over the ‘Black Horse’. Foras Walls and Floors showroom will be situated at the newly renovated 16th Century coaching Inn which is being renamed ‘No55 The Townhouse’. The building itself, steeped in historical charm and character,

Jem Lake Kitchens will be displaying their bespoke carpentry solutions for handmade kitchens, boot and wine rooms as well as bespoke pantry and dressing rooms. The floors and walls are by Foras, with the stone consulting area presenting new, exclusive and innovative ranges of natural stone and porcelain flooring and wall tiles. The newly landscaped gardens at the rear, feature a selection of the famous Foras RHS gold medal award-winning water features, garden accessories and landscaping. accessories. Better quality adds a touch of indulgence to your home and will last much longer. For example, opt for luxurious textures with feather-filled cushions in beautiful fabrics, such as velvet or silk, rather than mass-produced foam-filled cushions. Change the mood. Instantly improve the

Keep an eye out for... Wolff Evans & Sons Scotch Eggs

These have to be the best Scotch eggs we’ve ever tasted! The pork belly and shoulder is from Dingley Dell, so only they’ve used only the best ingredients. Harry and Bill started Wolff-Evans & Sons last year (Harry was inspired after a spell working with Raymond Blanc). The father and son team soon started making scotch eggs for Fortnum & Mason, which meant they ended up in Royal hampers for the palace. They also provided a scotch egg lunch for a Brad Pitt/ Guy Ritchie shooting

party. They now supply Co-ops and Budgens across East Anglia with their range of deli products: Homeslaw (a version made with savoy cabbage), Continental Potato Salad, Tuna Fraiche (a family recipe from the 70s) and Posh Egg Mayo. Bill says he never expected to sell a gourmet scotch egg outside of London. But the people of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex have proved him wrong and they are now delivering 3,000 a week locally and growing!

R

OGER HICKMAN’S eponymous restaurant recently celebrated its fifth birthday, and in that time it has become a real foodie fixture in the city, not to mention picking up a whole collection of awards and accolades, including three AA Rosettes (the only restaurant in Norwich to hold this award) and The Good Food Guide’s Best Restaurant in East Anglia. Although originally from Leeds, Roger is no stranger to the Norfolk food scene. He was head chef at the renowned Adlards, in the same building he is situated in now, when it held a Michelin star; he also had a spell as head chef at the Victoria at Holkham. Roger marked the fifth anniversary with a major refurbishment of the restaurant, overseen by leading Norwich interior decorator Jane Richards. Smart cream leather banquettes, contemporary grey painted walls, and designer copper lights have all been installed, alongside a signature sparkling glass-top bar where diners can enjoy a predinner drink. What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

Pulses, rapeseed oil and hazelnuts, which are three ingredients from which you can make loads of meals. Also, hot smoked paprika and red wine vinegar. April/May 2015 Vanilla

“The next big thing will be ‘clean eating’ – food cooked from good ingredients, avoiding overprocessed food” What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

Like most chefs, I can rarely be bothered to cook for myself after service. In the gap between lunch and dinner services you will often find me eating fish and chips from the Grosvenor Chip Bar; otherwise it is just as likely to be beer and crisps! Which dish do you enjoy cooking the most?

I like taking cheap cuts of meat, such as oxtail, pig’s head and flank of beef. They tend to have much more flavour than the prime cuts, and require more skill to create something special. What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

The current trend is for cauliflower, which you will see appearing on menus everywhere. I think

the next big thing will be ‘clean eating’ – food cooked from good ingredients, avoiding overprocessed food. That is why good restaurants remain popular – you know exactly what you are eating; it is the skill in the kitchen, not some factory somewhere, which is putting the food on your plate. Norfolk is full of great food and drink producers – any recent discoveries you can share?

Winbirri wines from Surlingham, especially their Bacchus white wine; herbs from Nurtured in Norfolk from Dereham; Creake Abbey smoked black ham; St Swithin’s cheese from Norton’s Dairy; Norfolk quail – so many to choose from. Roger Hickman’s, 79 Upper St Giles, Norwich NR2 1AB Tel: : 01603 633522

SATURDAY morning wander around the pretty town of Wymondham was topped off with lunch at Number 24 – a restaurant within a picture postcard building on Middleton Street. Number 24’s reputation has steadily grown since it opened in

straight for the three course menu, as did my friend. While we waited, homemade warm bread rolls arrived and were enjoyed, before a very pretty Parma Ham, Fresh Fig and Feta Cheese salad were presented, along with a creamy Cauliflower and Goats Cheese Tart, which was browned nicely on top. The warm tart was light – tempered by the crusty pastry – delicately flavoured and with a dash of pepper courtesy of a bed of rocket. My friend enjoyed the stronger flavours of her Parma ham with the sharpness of the feta smoothed by a sweet, fresh fig. Agreeing that we could eat our starters over again, there wasn’t much time to lament before hearty plates of Grilled Sea Bass on Smoked Haddock Chowder and a Grain Mustard Mash arrived. I’d love to tell you how we discussed the various highlights of our main course but there wasn't so much

The fine-food menu is centred around local and seasonal ingredients to award-winning effect. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed inside from the blustery weather, our coats were hung and we were seated in moments. The staff are impeccable. Friendly and knowledgeable, they immediately helped us choose a fruity Zinfandel to ease the terrible burden of deciding which tasty-looking lunch to order! On offer are two very reasonable set menus – 2 courses for £16.95 or 3 courses for £18.95. It took me seconds to decide that everything looked delicious, so I went

chat as more eating, the food was comforting and full of flavour. The restaurant was busy when we arrived and buzzing with conversation but unlike some places, we were

you ever make the same mistake as us! Served with marinated pineapple and coconut ice-cream, the creme brûlée was perfectly crunchy on top with a rich, creamy custard and a smidge of vanilla. But dear me, that cheesecake was good. Along with leisurely lunches, cherries are my favourite thing and this dessert had morello along with a cherry brandy syllabub. I wasn’t lying when I told the waiter it was the best I’d had in, well, a very long time. To round off our truly epic luncheon, we poured hot cups of refreshing Earl Grey but you could also choose a dessert wine or digestif from the menu. Tea was served with homemade petit fours, which might be considered a step too far after threecourses but not by us. So in summary, a couple of tips when visiting Number 24 – and you really should visit – food best enjoyed when taking time to savour. And don’t forget to pop an extra half hour on the parking meter before you get there! REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

IN SITU RESERVA CARMENÈRE An ideal crowd pleaser: on sale at Jarrod Deli at £8.20 a bottle

ASTER is upon us and of course Easter roast lunch for many is a family affair. Lamb is traditionally, and symbolically, the main dish at Easter served alongside some beautiful red wines. Younger (Spring!) lambs tastes milder and less gamey, but still delivers a richness that rivals steak. This makes the meat ideal for matching with dry, fruit-forward red wines. Of course your roast of choice may be beef, chicken or vegetarian. With this in mind I have chosen the delicious fruit-forward, silky but supple, In Situ Chillan Carmenere – grown in a single vineyard with a unique macroclimate at the heart of the Aconcagua Valley Carmenère is Chile’s own signature grape, this red varietal disappeared from European vineyards in the mid-19th century and reappeared among Chile’s Merlot vines a hundred years later. The wine is produced as a joint venture between Vina Errazuriz and Robert Mondavi, both highly acclaimed wine producers the quality is evident once you take your first sip.

Jayne Raffles has been running restaurants in Norwich with husband Nigel since 1990. Their restaurants are St Benedicts, The Library Bar and Grill and Pinocchio’s.

ut back to lunchtime for us! S likes his meat, so he chose the roast pork with all the trimmings, a good selection of fresh veg and the biggest Yorkshire Pudding I have ever seen! I felt like a lighter bite, so it was Prawn Salad for me, which was very fresh and crisp, a hefty pile of juicy prawns and a baguette and butter too. It was all very well cooked, seasoned and presented – with good-sized portions – and excellent value for money. I am a big fan of buying local, so it was very satisfying to see the Parlour Restaurant making the most of the excellent range of produce in the area and supporting local industry. We were pretty full after that – even though the pear crumble looked scrumptious – so we rounded

off the meal with some freshly brewed coffee and basked in the Spring sunshine pouring into the conservatory. Our dining companions were clearly very happy with the Parlour Restaurant too, and there were plenty of compliments when I asked if they had enjoyed their dinner. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and our waitress Tracey could not have been more helpful. This is a lovely way to spend a relaxing Sunday and welcome the long-awaited Spring.

YOU WILL NEED : ½ cucumber, peeled & thinly sliced 2 passion fruit 2 fresh sea bass fillets, deboned and skinned ¼ red chilli, finely chopped ¼ red onion, finely chopped Juice from ½ lime Fresh coriander cress and mint Good quality extra virgin olive oil White wine vinegar

1 Slice the bass fillets at an angle, into 5mm slices, cover and chill. Then, in a bowl, place the cucumber, pinch of salt and sugar, a splash of white wine vinegar and a small amount of chilli. Set aside to marinade. 2 Juice passion fruit, add salt, sugar and olive oil. 3 Take sliced fish and lay on a plate, squeeze over lime juice, salt, black pepper and a little olive oil. Set this aside for about 15 minutes to marinade. You can turn the fish over after 6-7 minutes – when the fish is ready it will become opaque. 4 Serve fish on chilled plates, scatter over pickled cucumber, onion, chopped chilli and mint. Yes Chef! A Simply divine and special confit monkfish recipe wonder from Connor Carway at The Last Wine Bar

Lightly spiced confit monkfish, with cauliflower and mango SERVES 4

4 90g monkfish fillets 1.5 litre rapeseed oil 5 tbsp curry powder 1 tbsp fennel seeds 3 bay leaves 2 tbsp tandoori spice Rind of 2 lemons 400g cauliflower 1 shallot 50g butter 50ml cream 50ml white wine vinegar 60g sugar 10ml white wine ½ tsp black onion seeds 1 mango, diced 1 red chilli, finely chopped Coriander, chopped Spinach

76

1 Lightly salt the monkfish, and leave for 20 minutes, then rinse. Meanwhile, put the curry powder, fennel seeds, bay, tandoori spice and lemon rind into the oil, and heat to 75°C. Remove from the heat, and put the fish in, leaving it for 20 minutes, until the fish is between 55°C and 60°C. 2 Mandolin 12 thin slices from the cauliflower. Break half of the rest into small florets, blanche for two minutes, and refresh in cold water. Fry these in half of the butter, heated until it is foaming, so it adds some colour. 3 Roughly chop the rest of the cauliflower and the shallot. Put the rest of the butter into a pan with a splash of oil, and colour the shallot for a few minutes. Now add the cauliflower and 150ml water, and cook for ten minutes. Blitz in a food

processor, and then add cream, to form a smooth puree. Season to taste. 4 Put the vinegar, sugar, white wine, onion seeds and 35ml water in a pan and boil until it has reduced by a half. Meanwhile, mix the red onion, chilli, mango, coriander in a bowl. Pour over the hot liquor, and then cover with clingfilm and allow to cool. 5 To serve, smear some puree on each plate, and then add the spinach, which should be lightly wilted. Place a piece of fish on each plate, topped with the mango relish. Scatter some of the florets and mandolined cauliflower, and garnish with some coriander cress. Anthony and Cleopatra

By William Shakespeare

One of Shakespeare's most powerful plays, the story centres on one of Rome’s three leaders, Mark Antony, and the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. These two lovers are first featured at Cleopatra’s palace, but as the play continues Antony’s political and social duties take the action to Rome, Syria, Actium, Parthia and Athens. In short, the lovers are put in locations and situations where they question each other's loyalty and love. The play’s ending is an example of how passion mingled with power, treachery, and misunderstanding, can lead to a tragic end. £18-£12 www.maddermarket.co.uk

Mike Crossley Headmaster Taverham Hall School

My City Life

coming to school. The key, of course, is having teachers who lead and inspire – the quality of staff determines the strength of a school.

You are originally from Lancashire – what do you think of Norwich, and what are your favourite places to go and things to do in the city? Norwich has a lot to offer and always feels like a warm and welcoming city. I have enjoyed my trips to the Theatre Royal and also hope to see Carrow Road hosting premier league football again in the near future.

If you were recommending Norwich to a first-time visitor, what one thing would you advise them not to miss?

You have been Headmaster of Taverham Hall School for seven years now. How has the school changed in that time and what ambitions do you have for its future?

outstanding inspection reports over the past 4 years suggest we are well on our way to achieving this.

So much has changed! The school has increased in size by over 100 pupils, which has helped to enhance our profile in all areas. We now offer parents more flexibility and choice within the school day and put greater focus on individualised learning. My ambitions are that we continue to provide a first class and inspiring education for all of our pupils. Four

I arrived at Headship after travelling extensively across the world and working successfully as both a Senior Master and Deputy Head in two large and leading preparatory schools. Unfortunately, I wasn’t particularly enthused at school myself as a boy. As a result I am driven to ensure every pupil in my school will wake up in the morning feeling excited about

Tell us a bit about your career path, what inspired you to go into education?

Having been a regular visitor to the cathedral with the school choir I would certainly recommend this to any visitor but would also advise them to undertake a trip on the Broads and take in some of the beautiful Norfolk coast line.

What do you do to relax?

I love fishing on the school’s stretch of the River Wensum – fishing anywhere in fact! I also enjoy walking my dog and spending time outdoors with my family. Sundays are often spent at North Walsham Rugby Club where I coach a successful U11 group. Rugby has always been a strong passion of mine and I enjoy at least one trip a year to Twickenham.

If you had £1 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? Wisely!
