2015 MODEL SEARCH
JMM Model Management has teamed up with Vanilla Magazine & Latitude to search for the fresh new Face of Suffolk 2015
© NEIL DAVIS
Change your life! ABIGAIL HARRINGTON, 2014 WINNER, ON JMM: I can't thank JMM enough for the start of my modelling career. With Sam's knowledge and experience she was able to place me with IMG in London. The fashion industry can be tough and I think the bigger support network you have the better. Sam has acted as a 'model mum' for me, knowing that she is always at the other end of the phone with advice and support has made me feel so much more at ease. I feel so fortunate to be signed with such a brilliant agency so close to home and can't imagine getting to this point without JMM. JMM has also helped me practically by doing test shoots with me and teaching me how to pose/move. These shots are now in my IMG portfolio. So far I’ve worked for Celine, Burberry, Chanel, Cosmopolitan and most recently for Babyliss, I’m off to Japan next – it definitely beats working in a bar!
12
If you’re lucky enough to have been blessed with good genes and a have determined, grounded attitude, modelling can be a rewarding career. It’s a great opportunity to travel, meet lots of exciting people, as well as earn a good living or fund a gap year.

VITA WEST ON JMM: Like Abi, having JMM as my mother agent has genuinely been invaluable. I knew absolutely nothing about fashion when I started and I definitely needed a lot of guidance. Sam came and met my whole family. When we were sure I was going to give it a go, she helped me with my wardrobe, as well as spending lots of happy afternoons practising ‘my walk’ and poses in front of the camera. JMM introduced me to IMG in 2011, whilst I was still at Thomas Mills. I began building my career in the school holidays, working at Blenheim Castle for Harper’s Bazaar one day and then trotting off to Barcelona for a major fashion brand the next. In my gap year, I travelled to Switzerland, Milan, Paris and finally Sam encouraged me to go to IMG in Sydney – without a doubt, a huge highlight. I did initially feel nervous, but one of Sam’s former London agency colleagues now works there. Knowing that a friend of Sam’s was going to be looking after me, gave me the confidence to take the plunge. I travelled all over Australia on assignments, I’m so glad I went! I’m now studying at Queens College, Cambridge but still model in my holidays. On my last break, I did a four day stint for Top Shop – it all helps pay the bills.
ENTRIES CLOSE: Monday 15th June 2015. JUDGES: Samantha Simpson at JMM (www.jmmsuffolk.co.uk); Laura Hall, Vanilla Magazine; Heidi Secker, Heart FM: Former Jack Wills casting Director, Sam Denny Hodson, at Homespun Cashmere (www.homespuncashmere.com). PRIZE: 1 year contract with JMM; Cover and fashion photo shoot for Aug/Sept issue of Vanilla Magazine and two weekend festival passes to Latitude 2015. *For full T&C’s see our website www.vanilla-magazine.co.uk

VALUE ADDED SERVICE Berridges lead the way in qualified jewellery valuations
C
HRISTOPHER Hardman, owner of Berridges the Jewellers in Ipswich, has recently been invited to join as a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers. This prestigious achievement was awarded after achieving a score of 94% in a recent monitoring exercise and is one of only 42 in the UK and only three in East Anglia. Christopher joined Croydon’s the Jewellers from school in 1979 and founded Berridges over 20 years ago with his wife Angela. Having qualified to undertake valuations in 1985, Christopher has continually specialised in valuations with a keen interest in vintage jewellery visiting auctions and antiques markets around the country. Christopher commented: “I am delighted to have been invited to become a Fellow, I Joined the National Association of Goldsmiths Valuations Committee in 2000 to help raise the standards of valuations across the UK. The consistent monitoring of the valuers has seen the number of registered
14
valuers fall from approximately 600 to 200, which is ensuring standards are met across the industry.”
B
ERRIDGES offers customers an unrivalled valuation service, which are all undertaken by Christopher on the premises, unlike most jewellers who have to send clients’ jewellery away with a long turnaround time. “All valuations contain a detailed description, photograph and of course value,” explained Christopher. “The valuation is stored on a secure website where it can be accessed by any authorised insurance company
eliminating the need for paper copies. A detailed description is not only vital when making an insurance claim it also helps the police when it comes to tracking down stolen items.” Although a small part of the business, it is one that Christopher is particularly proud of. “If you can value jewellery accurately it keeps you one step ahead when it comes to purchasing new stock at the most competitive prices,” explained Christopher. “I would recommend that you have all your items professionally valued at least every five years, for peace of mind and of course in case of any loss or theft.” n

You need a hat that can fit under umbrella and I can also provide matching brollies for my client too.” TIPS FOR WEARING A HAT ● Find your outfit first so that you can co-ordinate what hat will look best with it. ● Try on lots of different styles to eliminate the ones you really don’t like and make sure it is something you feel comfortable in especially if you are going to wear it all day. ● Once you have your hat, wear it while you are doing the washing up or the vacuuming. Like a new pair of shoes, it will feel more comfortable if you get used to it being on your head. ● Let the hat make the statement – choose a simple outfit so the hat can do all the talking.
We are all blessed with different shaped faces and in the event you need to wear a hat for an occasion it is a good idea to first understand what shape yours is and what styles suit it.

● Keep jewellery to a minimum.
Less is definitely more when wearing a hat. ● Hats don’t have to be big to be dramatic – head pieces or fascinators can be equally eye catching. ● The brim of a hat should never be wider than the wearer’s shoulders and never be worn below the eyebrows – ideally it should sit half an inch above them. ● Classic colours such as navy, silver, grey and black are in vogue every year but also look out for pops of colour such as orange, lemon and hot pink.
IT’S SHOWTIME! The 2015 Suffolk Show is held this year on 27 and 28 May at Trinity Park, near Ipswich. It’s a great day out for shopping and socialising. ● A good way to determine what face shape you have is to stand in front of a mirror and draw around the reflection of your face using a kohl pencil or felt tip pen.
● Angular faces tend to suit hats made from stiff fabrics with a flat or point crown and straight brims such as peaked caps, berets and hats with a brim.
● Soft faces suit hats made of softer fabric with rounded or domed crown and a curved brim such as baker boy hats, and can don feathers and decorations.

“Now I know the children and I won’t be without a home, and David and I can plan for our independent futures, while still taking care of our little ones.”
Housing rights when separating if you have children OUR PROBLEM: When I met my partner David he had his own property. About five years ago I moved in with him, when we found we were expecting our first baby. A couple of years after having our second child, we found we were no longer making each other happy. Sadly, we decided it was time to split up, and, although we were on fairly friendly terms for the sake of the children, I was worried that David would sell the house and leave us with nowhere to go. I thought that David had added my name onto the deeds for the house when he re-mortgaged a few years ago but I didn’t have any of the paperwork. SARAH, FELIXSTOWE
32
HOW IT WAS SOLVED: David and I had been together for around eighteen months when I found out I was pregnant. Moving in with him was the natural thing to do, and we didn’t even think about the fact that we might not still be in love in the future. About three years ago, when I was pregnant with our second child and the fixed rate on the mortgage was due for renewal, David said that he’d add me onto the deeds for the house. We didn’t really see the point of getting married, but upon finding myself in a situation where we were separating, I was unsure of my rights. I mentioned my concerns to a friend and she recommended that I speak to Amanda at Barker Gotelee, as she’d helped with a similar situation for her sister. I googled the solicitors Vanilla April/May 2015
REAL LIVES
and, being out of town, Barker Gotelee was easy for me to get to with no need to pay for parking. So I called Amanda to arrange an appointment for a few days later. I felt a real sense of relief as soon as Amanda walked into the room, and this feeling grew stronger still as we spoke about what was happening and Amanda told me I wasn’t alone in my situation.
D
AVID AND I had already agreed that the children would stay with me, but that they would spend every Wednesday night and every other weekend with him. I wasn’t too worried about that side of things, but I was concerned about where the kids and I would live, and I had a real fear that David might sell the house without me even knowing or having a say. Amanda explained that this was unlikely, and that if David had added me to the deeds, he wouldn’t be able to sell without me agreeing. While our home had originally belonged to David, I was likely to be entitled to a share of the property as he had added me to the deeds. Amanda also explained that under the Children Act 1989 I could also be entitled to make claims against David in order to provide for the children. Since we were on good terms, Amanda thought that mediation may be suitable for us to work through the situation without the need to go to court. She explained that we should both go through the full financial disclosure process – where we would need to get our financial
April/May 2015 Vanilla
paperwork together and disclose it to prove our financial situations. Then we could work out what each of us needed to fairly and reasonably live and take care of the children. Amanda explained that if we were able to reach an agreement, she could prepare this in a formal document for us to sign.
A
FTER OUR INITIAL consultation I went away and worked out the finances I’d need to stay afloat. I made a list of all the savings and other assets I owned and made a file with all the paperwork for each. Amanda also suggested I contact the Land Registry and they confirmed the house was in joint names.
David took legal advice from his solicitor and got his financial paperwork together too. Amanda then arranged for us to meet with a local mediator to decide what our next moves would be and how we could resolve the situation. It took a couple of meetings but once we were both happy with the arrangements, Amanda was able to write a separation agreement so that we knew exactly where we stood. I’m so glad that I went to Barker Gotelee so early on in our separation. We’ve both bought new homes and the children have their own rooms in each. Even though the future isn’t turning out quite as I’d planned, I’m confident everything will work out well for us now. ■
We are here to help We all need legal services from time to time. Our Family Law specialists, Nicola Furmston and Amanda Crowe, are on hand to help.

Into the woods...
Eileen Fisher, Head of Junior School at Ipswich High School on the benefits of learning outdoors
benefits of learning outside, we also find that our pupils have a much more multi-sensory experience when they can see, hear, smell and touch things. This can help with stimulating creativity in literacy tasks, often igniting a pupil’s imagination and improving their story writing, poetry and art work. Most of the tasks in the woodland are child- led and consequently girls are eager to get stuck in! They never get bored as they are learning all the time and developing both their gross and fine motor skills.

T IPSWICH HIGH School, outdoor education is a huge part of our curriculum and everyday teaching. As a trained Forest School practitioner, I am passionate about the benefits of learning outdoors and we take every opportunity to ensure

that our pupils harness the opportunities provided by the outstanding natural environment here. With 84 acres of parkland, we are incredibly fortunate to have abundant wildlife throughout the school year for work and play. Aside from the obvious physical
ORKING outside promotes leadership skills in a very different way from working in the classroom. This is illustrated in our Year 6 survival day when we see some pupils excel at explaining and using their knowledge to develop and express ideas, whilst others enjoy and succeed at the practical and physical side of tasks. This improves the girls’ confidence, but also their skills in working together, communicating and listening. There is nothing quite like sitting around a campfire you have built and cooking marshmallows! We find that our girls take much bigger risks outdoors, whether it is physical challenges such as climbing a tree or experimenting with an investigation. Failure offers a chance to learn from your mistakes and children naturally improve their resilience and perseverance by trial and error. We value the importance of technology at Ipswich High, but time away from screens and sensory information at your fingertips is also equally as important; it offers time to discover and encounter new things

and start to look for patterns in nature and to look for similarities and differences that are all around us. Recently we welcomed a group of Year 4 and 5 children from Shotley Primary School to join us in our ‘Woodland Basecamp’ sessions. They had a great time making assault courses for squirrels, finding habitats for minibeasts and building a trap for snakes amongst other exciting activities. The parents that accompanied them had as much fun as the children, relishing in their shared time in the great outdoors. It is wonderful when you see adults and pupils working and learning together, building relationships and enjoying the hands-on experience. In the winter months, the hot chocolate is also a much-loved treat! ■ Read about Eileen’s ‘East Coast Life’ page 90.

hose with more than a passing interest in motor cars, will associate Mazda with innovation and a thirst for new ideas. So what will I find with the latest incarnation of the Mazda2? Well, the new version has been ‘stretched’ a little compared to the previous model – there is a definite air of improved interior roominess. The tailgate opening and boot space make for easy loading of shopping and luggage. Its looks are muscular, almost animal-like – the front-end view continues this perspective. It has a defined ‘face’ with the headlights providing the eyes focusing on its prey! Inside, the interior detail is fabulous – the layout is straightforward, uncluttered and modern. This leads to an intuitive use of the various controls and switches. There are welcome features like handy door pockets, big enough for drink bottles and a large glove locker. Clearly, there

has been a lot of thought from the design team of making the interior a functional yet welcome and desirable place to be. Thanks to the sport and racing heritage of Mazda, you can expect a spirited drive both in terms of acceleration and road holding. This car comes in the category of “fun to drive”. Mazda also have an enviable reputation for reliability, regularly featuring in the top of the various polls and surveys. There are choices across the range of engines and specifications but as a standard feature I can’t help but be excited by the inclusion of the Hill Hold Assist, important for those whose hill-start abilities are akin to those

It prevents any rolling back as one tries to pull away up the hill, thereby reducing the likelihood of bumping the car behind. Simple but so useful! And, with the optional Safety Pack, comes another great feature – a ‘heads up’ display, which projects key information onto a clear panel in front of the windscreen. A super idea! The standard equipment list is impressive and with all the possible options, it is comforting to know that the local Mazda dealer, Donalds, have such well trained and knowledgeable staff, able to explain all the benefits and function of each feature to help make a purchase choice the right one. ■

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Sue Carter and her team at Image
SHOULD I THROW OUT MY LIPSTICKS/GLOSS AFTER HAVING A COLD? No, because the virus or bacteria will die quickly and won't reinfect you. However, if you have had a cold sore or strep throat you should throw out all lip products as these infections are contagious. If you use a brush to apply your lipstick and have had either infection, you should also replace this as it may still harbour germs. HOW CAN I STRENGTHEN SOFT NAILS WITHOUT OVERLAYS OR EXTENSIONS? You should use a cuticle oil day and night like clockwork. If you have soft nails, water is your worst enemy, so wear gloves when washing up and for housework. You could try a strengthener specifically for soft nails. And there is a range of supplements available that really do work as long as you take them daily. A diet rich in vitamin B, whole grains and cereals will also help build healthy, strong nails, and recondition with regular manicures. HOW CAN I GET RID OF PUFFY EYES? They are very common and can be a sign of toxins, so first cut down on salty foods which can cause water retention and eat more potassium-rich foods such as bananas and
46
tomatoes. Make sure you drink at least a litre of water each day and try to have eight hours’ sleep as if you are tired this can cause puffiness. If you have puffy eyes only in the morning, it may be because you are not sleeping on your back and water and toxins are drawn to and stored in your eye area, or perhaps use another pillow to elevate your head. And in the morning help drain the build-up of fluid under the eye. Starting from close to your nose, use your index finger to apply gentle pressure and sweep to the outer corner of the eye, repeating five times. HOW CAN I STOP MY LIPS GETTING DRY AND FLAKY AND KEEP THEM LOOKING LUSCIOUS? In winter our lips tend to become dry and flaky and sometimes chapped or cracked. It’s important to use an ultra-hydrating lip balm to replenish moisture lost due to heating and weather. You can also exfoliate your lips as dead skin may build up and become flaky. There are a few ways to exfoliate, you could try using a toothbrush (not your regular one), or if your lips are really bad, an exfoliating product, first using your finger to gently remove dead skin in circular motions. Then use a toothbrush to clear any remaining particles, and finally apply your ultra-hydrating balm for perfect, kissable lips. When choosing a balm, stay away from anything petroleum-oil-based as it suffocates the skin rather than nourishing it. Look for one containing natural wax (bee or rose) and moisturising ingredients such as shea butter. Following these steps should help keep your lips luscious. n Vanilla April/May 2015

NEW SEASON
1 Dewy Skin #1
BEAUTY
Warmer temperatures mean you can swap heavier foundations for lighter BB and CC Creams. You’ll love the lightweight texture and glowing effect they have on skin. Just make sure you go for one with SPF (30+) to make sure your skin is protected. Head down to Purity Beauty in Ipswich and get your hands on Mii’s Skin Loving BB Cream which comes in a variety of shades with SPF 45. If you have oily skin then simply take a little powder (loose or pressed) over your forehead, nose and chin.
WISHLIST From beautifully bronzed skin to bold eye colours, we share five of the hottest beauty looks of the season with top tips on how to wear them and the essential products you need. Plus, read our top tips to ensure a squeaky-clean make-up bag…
2 #2 Seeing Red If you wear one lip colour just make sure it’s a shade of red. From bright pillar-box red to darker ox-blood, it is the lip hue of the season. If you find bold colours tricky to wear then opt for a sheer stain, gloss or balm. You could also take your favourite lipstick and mix it with a little Vaseline or clear lip balm for a softer take on this style.

3 Golden Girl #3
BY ALICE MANNING
This is the perfect time of year to update your beauty essentials. Spring is here and summer is around the corner which means brighter make-up palettes, golden skin and sheer, effortless textures – hurrah! Having kept a very close eye on the catwalks we’re sharing the trends we are most excited about with you, Jane Iredale along with easy and fast ways bronzer £39.95 to wear them. That means less Image Salon time in front of the mirror and more time having fun.
Beautifully bronzed skin always makes you feel healthier and looks great when worn with bright colours. You can apply a self-tan for a healthy all-over hint of colour or go for a powder bronzer for something more instant and less committing. The make-up pro’s always suggest taking bronzer over the high points of the face where the sun naturally hits; forehead, down the nose, cheek and brow bones. Complete the look by blending a pearlescent cream over the top to cheat killer bone structure, even if you weren’t born with it! Jane Iredale does a beautiful range of bronzers, available at Image Salon in Ipswich.

5 Just-Buffed Nails #5
4 Bright Eyes #1 Ladies, it’s time to update your classic black eyeliner for something brighter – we’re talking emerald green, azure blue and turquoise. The easiest way to wear colour is with a thin line along your upper lashes. Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, available at Déjà Vu Boutique in Ipswich, do the most beautiful electric blue liner (Azul) which is easy to apply, brightens eyes and can be layered for intensity. If you prefer wearing eyeshadow try taking the satin colours in Young Blood’s Eye Quad over your eye lids for a pretty wash of colour. Always complete the look with long fluttery lashes.
50
It is all about pretty pink nail colours. They are easy to apply, chips are less obvious and they make the tips of your nails appear whiter. The key is to make sure your hands, nails and cuticles are in good condition. Invest in a nourishing hand cream (apply it before bed to allow it to sink in), cuticle oil (almond oil is just as good) and a nail file for strong, well-groomed nails. Zoya Nail Polish (available ay Déjà Vu Boutique) have a range of satin polishes which are in between gloss and matte, and leave nails looking like beautiful satin fabric.
SPRING CLEAN YOUR MAKE-UP BAG…
1. Clean your brushes with warm water and facial cleanser to avoid a backlog of make-up, dirt and bacteria. 2. Always check the longevity of your makeup. Look on the back of products for a number followed by an ‘M’ – such as 4M which suggests it is safe to use four months from opening. 3. Check if your make-up bag is machine friendly and pop it in the wash if so. If it isn’t, take an antibacterial wipe thoroughly around the inside.

BENEFITS OF
OSTEO PATHY
Osteopathy is a gentle and effective hands-on approach to healthcare, based on the principle that the way your body moves influences how it functions.
damaged/injured parts of the body and thus alleviating pain in tissues such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. When the body is balanced (in alignment) it will function efficiently with the minimum of wear, stress and energy, thereby reducing pain and disease. Osteopathy aims to achieve such balance. Wear and tear, can after years, irritate the nerves to our muscles and organs leaving them either sensitive, overworked or both. This is usually the main cause for symptoms such as migraine, heartburn, asthma, IBS, WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY constipation, head ache, back ache, neck ache – the list is long AND HOW IT CAN Osteopathy uses a holistic HELP YOU? approach when assessing any patient, looking at the way the OSTEOPATHY IS A UNIQUE patient moves mechanically system of diagnosis and and functionally and taking into treatment, a patient centred account posture generally as therapy that lays its main well as how that posture may emphasis on the structural change through occupation and integrity of the body. Jo started her career as a personal trainer, working in various specialist gyms and a rehabilitation centre for spinal injuries. She developed an interest in wanting to treat conditions and injuries gaining more long term relief for patients. She qualified nine years ago from the British School of Osteopathy, she has since furthered her qualifications with acupuncture, which she has found an amazing tool in treating patients. The treatment you receive will be tailor-made to your individual condition. She combines a variety of different techniques depending on what will best aid your recovery and reduce your pain. This includes spinal manipulation, soft tissue massage, mobilisation, dietary advice, postural and ergonomic support, specific exercises and stretches and acupuncture.

SPYING OUT SECRET HEALTH PROBLEMS It started out as a top-secret spying device and now helps to detect conditions that may lead to more serious health problems, including breast cancer. And thermography is available in Bury St Edmunds. The early detection of conditions which would lead to more serious disease, including cancer, is the main focus at a clinic in Bury St Edmunds. Thermography, a technique born in the 1950's and originally a top-secret Cold War spying device, is now put to a wide range of other uses including detecting sources of nerve inflammation, infection and circulatory problems. Thermography has a proven scientific track record and has been around longer than we may think. The process is simple. There is no skin contact and there are no harmful rays. The medical thermal imaging camera is able to capture detailed images of the temperature of the skin. It relies on the sympathetic nerve control of the skin blood flow and the ability of the nervous system to respond and react to pathology, anywhere in the body. Breast thermography is applicable to women of all ages, particularly those who have dense breast tissue, fibrocystic tissue or implants. It is a completely safe, non-invasive adjunctive screening method that has been proven to be very effective. Several people have really good levels of general fitness but have a problem which therapists are struggling to identify. The infra-red image literally shows us hotspots and this helps to identify the area that requires treatment. It is especially good for compensatory pain – where a person has a problem in a particular area but the cause is somewhere else.
This makes the test invaluable at showing up early signs of coronary heart disease, giving the individual the option of making diet and lifestyle changes before it is too late. Many conditions that thermography can help to detect include whether a person could have an increased risk of having a stroke. The thermography study will show if there is a carotid artery asymmetry. Inflammation of this artery is an early indicator that the person could be at higher risk of having a stroke. If this were the case, an early treatment strategy would need to be put in place. Many medical tests are of anatomy, such as X-Rays, ultrasound and mammography. These tests show us the structure of the body. There are few tests available that are tests of function – i.e., what is going on inside and outside the body. Tests of anatomy will miss such things as active inflammation and increased blood supply, found in many illnesses. There is so much we can do to prevent and treat illness and disease. Early detection of a potential problem plays an important part in making us feel empowered to take control of our health and not live in fear of illness.

The expert fitters are able to work in any size and shape of room and have plenty of experience of fitting awkward and unusual spaces such as spiral stairs, boats and campervans. Every job is unique and individual so receives the same attention to detail. Archway Carpets work with both domestic and commercial clients throughout the Suffolk coastal area. If you are considering new flooring and are unsure of where to look, Darrell and his team at Church Street are definitely worth a visit. ■

in interior and exterior painting, wallpapering, coving and glazing. After achieving his City & Guilds apprenticeship, Mark worked for a couple of companies, but in 1992 he decided to set up on his own and has never looked back. “I knew I could offer a great service because I love what I do, and I’m a stickler for quality. My aim has always been to treat my customers and their homes
with respect, turn up and finish on time, and do a great job for a reasonable price. I think I’m doing something right, as many of my customers come back again and again and I get a lot of referrals.” Most of Mark’s work is domestic, and he also handles period properties, where careful selection of paints and finishes is essential. “I often work with interior designers on older

properties where the paint finish on the walls and woodwork has to be National Trust approved. “But for any domestic customer, I can help and advise on what will look good generally, and what is ‘in’ now in terms of colour and finish. There is so much choice on the market and it can be very confusing, so I can help take the mystery out of it. At the moment, the trend is for white and grey paint, with bold accent colours used for furnishings like curtains and cushions.” Mark also has a network of other skilled workers, such as carpenters and plasterers, who he brings in to help where they are needed. “It’s essential to have a good team of reliable people who you know will do good work for customers,” explains Mark. “I use the same people every time.” Over his 30 year career, Mark has had some unusual work. “I was asked to paint a world map in the reception area of ICI, that was quite something.” He may be local, but Mark’s work can take him out of the area, sometimes as far afield as London. “I’ll go wherever I am needed, it makes life very interesting and challenging.”
But the true test of a tradesperson… what do the customers think? Polly Hester, from Woodbridge, has used Mark many times; to wallpaper her dining room and, more recently, to paint the kitchen and external windows.
“Mark is fantastic,” says Polly, “he does a really great job. It’s superb quality, he arrives when he says he will, finishes on time and he’s very good value. He’s a really nice, trustworthy person to have around.” Jan Newman, from Ipswich, has been a loyal customer of Mark’s for 12 years.
“Mark has painted my house, inside and out, three times in 12 years,” she says. “He is so reliable, which is very important to me, and does a wonderful job every time. Quality and a friendly service is what I get from Mark and I hope he’ll keep coming back whenever we need a new coat of paint.” Brian Keeble, from Ipswich, asked Mark to redecorate his house top to bottom, inside and out, three years ago and is delighted with the result.
“Mark did an excellent job, very professional, and he’s such a nice bloke, says Brian. “What more could you ask?” To contact Mark, call 07770 608226 or 01473 273494, or email him at mark.barber30@yahoo.com

Wolff Evans & Sons Scotch Eggs
These have to be the best Scotch eggs we’ve ever tasted! And the pork belly and shoulder is from Dingley Dell, so nice and local too. Harry and Bill started Wolff-Evans & Sons last year (Harry was inspired after a spell working with Raymond Blanc). The father and son team soon started making scotch eggs for Fortnum & Mason, which meant they ended up in Royal hampers for the palace. They also provided a scotch egg lunch for a Brad Pitt/ Guy Ritchie shooting
party. They now supply Co-ops and Budgens across Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex with their range of deli products: Homeslaw (a version made with savoy cabbage), Continental Potato Salad, Tuna Fraiche (a family recipe from the 70s) and Posh Egg Mayo. Bill says he never expected to sell a gourmet scotch egg outside of London. But the people of Suffolk and Essex have proved him wrong and they are now delivering 3,000 a week locally and growing!

HE FABULOUS bar brasserie at milsoms in Dedham has a rightful reputation as a gorgeous place to get great food in a really relaxed atmosphere. The beautiful gardens make it a perfect place for a spring lunch and as the nights get lighter you’ll get a glimpse of the stunning surroundings even if you’re visiting for an evening meal. The two tier restaurant provides plenty of space for turn-up diners (the milsoms quirk is that there’s no booking and they serve all day) but the real draw on a sunny May day will be the terrace. The menu is the best of British with a tip of the hat to global cuisine, while the greatest emphasis is on fresh, local ingredients, in season and imaginatively flavourmatched. Starters from the specials included prosciutto with ripped plum, salted marcona almonds, with mostocotto dressing and a silky smooth Dover slip sole with nut brown butter which was a perfectly
light and delightfully simple intro for a heavier main course. From the regular menu, the seared scallops were divine, resting on a flavoursome Jerusalem artichoke puree with crunchy hazelnut dressing, surrounded by crispy twirls of Jerusalem artichoke. Other tempting suggestions included the beetroot ‘tart fine’ with goats curd, onion puree, ruby chard and hazelnuts or for retro-lovers 70s prawn cocktail. MILSOMS’ EXCELS at steak and the sirloin was succulent and perfectly seasoned, served with a cup of skinny fries, a huge roasted mushroom and a choice of sauces. The ingredients could not be fresher or more local – the Dedham Vale beef is reared and raised, practically on the doorstep, using traditional welfare and husbandry techniques and dry aged for a minimum of 28 days. The proof is in the taste and the steaks are certainly one of the reasons for many diners to

return. The signature milsoms cheeseburger in a brioche bun with smoked chilli mayo was also a very popular choice. Other choices included a gorgeous Wester Ross salmon fillet, which was served on a spinach mash with brown shrimp volute and a bouncy poached egg bursting with a deep yellow yolk. Traditional favourites – shepherd’s piece, pork chops with bubble and squeak mash and Icelandic cod and chips – nestle on the menu alongside curries and pasta. The showstopper desserts were worth holding out for – a fabulous blackberry jelly nestled beneath a thick lemon curd, a crust of tiny meringue and a huge whirl of blackberry cream served, while from the specials list, a double chocolate and raspberry sundae was served in a long, long glass which added to the sense of indulgence. The milsoms team have a winning formula; the same menu and combination of relaxed dining in a beautiful outdoors setting is available over at the lovely Kesgrave Hall. They have even produced a sumptuous tome of a cook book – Recreate – for those who want to take the taste home with them, but being there and enjoying the delightful surroundings while you dine is definitely an experience to savour.

The Crucible
Written by Arthur Miller 50 years on from its UK premiere. Arthur Miller’s tale of religious hysteria in the infamous witch trials of 1692 is a masterpiece of social and political commentary, and a timely warning on how profound religious loyalty can be manipulated by those seeking to serve their own ends. The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition and personal grievances, culminating in a violent climax, is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. The New Wolsey Young Company tackle ‘one of a handful of great plays that will both survive the twentieth century and bear witness to it’. 7.45pm . £8-£14

Eileen Fisher Head of Junior School at Ipswich High School
My East Coast Life
Eileen Fisher is Head of the Junior School at Ipswich High School for Girls; she has been working there for nearly six years. She is married to David, has two daughters, Isobel and Eliza, and lives in Westerfield with their two dogs Coco and Bowie and cat Elvis.
What inspired you to go into education? Mrs McGinty and Mrs Dearlove! Two amazing teachers who made a huge difference to my childhood. Mrs McGinty was kind, supportive and started my enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors. Mrs Dearlove was like a 50s film star – I adored her and she inspired my love of art and creative writing. Having great teachers really does make an impact and can influence and mould you for the future.
What was it like moving from the city of Edinburgh to a rural area? I worked in Edinburgh but I lived in Dunbar which is a beautiful town right on the east coast. Dunbar is famous for being the birthplace of John Muir, a Scottish-American naturalist and author and has some of the most amazing woodland and beaches in the country. I do enjoy both rural and city life and working for the GDST offers both as our Head Office is near Victoria in London and my school office has breathtaking views of the River Orwell. We hear you have a passion for outdoor education? The grounds at Woolverstone Hall must be Heaven? I love being outside and the benefits of children working and playing outdoors are numerous. We run a Forest School
programme in the woodland here at the school for our own girls and also have had other local visiting primary schools. Outdoor learning promotes problem solving, risk taking and persistence. In Forest School sessions our very youngest children are continually exploring and discovering. Outdoor learning ultimately is fun and children who are happy and interested will learn quickly and be motivated to find out more. If we also add the increase in physical activity, then our learners with be healthier and have a better immune system. What do you do to relax away from school? I am always looking forward to a new challenge and I am currently learning to play the piano and how to ski. It is never too late to learn and I try to be a good role model for the girls – it's all about perseverance and giving things a go! What is special/unique about Suffolk for you? I really love the village where I live, Westerfield. It is rural yet a mile from the town and we have two good pubs right on our doorstep. If you had £5 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? On phone credit. My sister lives in Southampton and although we see each other frequently I do miss her. n
