PRING has sprung, which means it’s time to wave byebye to the heavy winter coats and reach for lighter layers to keep the spring chill at bay. Whether you’re lunching with friends, heading into the city for a shopping trip or want to style-up your workwear, there’s one piece that will be your best fashion friend this spring. The classic blazer. No longer just for the office, or more formal occasions, blazers are a savvy buy this season as they go with almost anything. And with styles ranging from oversized, to slim-fit, classic to cropped, they are the tailoring go-to trend for spring. intu Chapelfield, the city’s biggest shopping centre, sent Norwich lifestyle blogger Liddy Goodrum on a shopping mission to find two perfect blazers which could form the basis of gorgeous outfits for spring. And with new-season collections now in stores, she was spoilt for choice. “A blazer is a staple in my wardrobe, and they were all over the catwalks this season, so I was excited to see what new styles were awaiting me at intu Chapelfield. “After browsing Monsoon, Zara, River Island and House of Fraser; and trying on dozens of blazers, I picked out my favourite two; both from H&M. Fantastic buys which will instantly update my look for warmer days this spring, and no doubt they’ll reappear in autumn too!”

BLAZER STYLE FOR SPRING “I love a blazer because they are just so versatile, and I wear them on repeat. By day, I’ll team them with a dark, classic jacket with blue jeans, a tee and trainers. Then for night, I’ll instantly switch this look up with some chic heels.” LOOK 1 Jersey basic tee £3.99 H&M Striped blazer £8 in sale

(original price £34.99) H&M

“A timeless black blazer is a wise investment, and will work really hard in your wardrobe, particularly if you’re a fan of animal print which is sticking around this spring. But brightly coloured blazers and pastels are really fun too. “Another big trend for 2019 is a colour coordinated trouser suit. Paired with a simple tee, it creates a confident look. “I also love an oversized style, or a blazer thrown over a floaty, feminine dress. An instant way to look effortlessly chic when rushing out the door!” LOOK 2 Leopard print dress £24.99 Black blazer £34.99

THE POWER OF THE SUIT

THE CHECK SUIT

Miss Selfridge

Set yourself apart with various check patterns perfect for work to evening wear

by Pam Davis

W

e all know the benefits of wearing a finely tailored suit – it makes you feel refined and ‘put together’. Suits are no longer considered to be just male attire, they are definitely now, as with so many other items, Unisex clothing. I’m willing to bet the last time you even thought about the suit that’s stuffed at the back of your wardrobe, it was for a job interview, and then you threw it right back into its hiding place. Suits are precious investment pieces in any wardrobe, you don't have to worry about your look, as this outfit can be worn from work to special parties. It’s an easy-to-style apparel, with an incredibly strong appearance. The great thing about

the suit is the easiness of styling – you can buy a plain coloured design and simply accessorise. DRESS IT DOWN SUIT A suit is the epitome of Pair a matching blazer and stylish – and it makes pant with a simple white tee, getting dressed a and throw on some Vans or doddle! white sneakers. If your job (or A double breasted the occasion) allows it, swap jacket is the perfect way out the pants all together for to add a commanding tailored shorts. and powerful element to your work ensemble. You can soften the look of this masculine Star by Julien fashion piece by opting Macdonald for a fun print or you can add more feminine accessories into the mix. Personally, I love suits with high-waisted pants and side pockets. I love having fun with different colours and styles. Depending on our body shape, we can choose from boyfriend inspired sizes, loose-fit pants, as well as fitted, edgy and slim ones.

CROP IT GO BOLD

Have fun with colours, you can go from classic white and black to purples, blues, yellows the list is endless. Be brave with different textures and patterns too!

Cropped suits with some playful shoes completes this look. Even a Bermuda length (think: cut right above the knee, but fitted through the thigh) will make any suit look way more casual.

AM IK A Ladies Boutique

E L Y T S E C A R B EareMto be different with your eyewear

D

A

s we enter our third year of bringing the hottest eyewear in Europe to Norwich we decided to check the age and gender of what styles were proving to be popular. We subjectively graded the frames from conservative via cool, funky, retro, really out there and finally ‘the bright outrageous and I love ‘em so I’m having them and I don’t care what my grandchildren think!’. We put the results into a graph and found that the further our Lady clients moved from age 21 the more bold they were being with their eyewear. In fact it turned out that almost 100% of the real top end fashion frames were being bought by the 50+ group with the 70+ group really

going for it. The guys were even more marked – they really started going for the bolder stuff at about 60+. The other interesting thing we are always hearing from our clients is how often complete strangers comment in a positive way about their eyewear and we all love a bit of flattery. So how do you make the move from samey frames to something more fashionable? The answer is simple – like clothes, try them on. If you’re not sure then try them on lots of times over a period of time. We see a lot of people look in our window for months before venturing in to try some of our frames on. As a business we understand that you don’t always want someone hovering over you whilst you are trying new eyewear on. So we invite you to come and see us and have a play with our frames in peace and quiet, we might even make you a tea or coffee whilst you play! Jeff@Oculus

new derrière fixation has swept the globe (thanks, Kim K!) When it comes to flattering cuts for all shapes and sizes, the science of designer denim has undergone a revolution in recent years. While squats and lunges help, some of us need a little extra magic in the curve department. There’s a real buzz around Italian brand Freddy jeans which have invaded social media! But it’s not just hype – you really do get the perfect fit through these shape enhancing push-up pants. Freddy WR.UP Skinny Jeans have a fantastic fit due to their ‘Patented Shaping Technology’ and special materials and seams produce a further push-up effect. Each pair has a silicone membrane and a striking cut.

Freddy WR.UP skinny jeans at The Style Show

More of a jegging really, these jeans give a fantastic smoothing and shaping effect to the hips, butt and thighs and they are available at The Style Show in Eaton. STYLE SHOW TIPS FOR TRYING ON JEANS

DON’T wear granny pants! DO wear a seamless thong – this ensures your jeans fit smoothly with no added lumps and bumps. Briefs can pinch inwards and create a distorted silhouette. DON’T dress for the Arctic DO wear layers – this way, you can strip down when you work up a sweat. Slip-on shoes are good for making multiple changes, too. A tight tee or vest will let you easily check out the shape of the jean.

A good pair of jeans will resculpt your derrière!

“I feel that I should talk to someone at work about it but I don’t know where to start and I am feeling anxious to do so.”

When poor mental health is affecting your work MY QUESTION: For some time now I have been suffering from poor mental health. Recently, it has gotten worse and I am starting to worry that it is affecting my work and that colleagues have started to notice. I feel that I should talk to someone at work about it but I don’t know where to start and I am feeling anxious to do so. I am concerned about how my employer will react. What would you suggest my options are moving forward?

38

F

IRSTLY, it is a great step that you have recognised that you need to speak to someone at your workplace regarding your mental health. Your mental health encompasses your emotional, psychological, and social well-being, all of which influence thoughts, feelings and actions. It is likely that your mental health is affecting your work without you even fully realising it. It can affect various social situations including decision making,

interactions with others and dealing with stress. Positive mental health is commensurate with productivity, positivity and substantially beneficial and contributory to the workplace. A recent Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development study highlighted the impact that mental ill health can have on organisations, finding: ● 37% of sufferers are more likely to get into conflict with colleagues ● 57% find it harder to juggle Vanilla April/May 2019

A

RE YOU finding that you are experiencing one or more of the above? I just want to remind you that it is completely normal to be experiencing this and others at your place of work are likely to be too. Statistics taken from the Mental Health Foundation found that one in four people in the UK will experience some kind of mental health problem over the course of the year. It is important that you let appropriate colleagues know that you are struggling at work. You may wish to confide in a friend at work; someone you trust and let them know how you are feeling so that they can support you on a daily basis. At the same time, you should speak to your HR manager (or equivalent) and/ or your line manager. An HR manager will act as an impartial and confidential person who will be able to put procedures in place to best support you. They will be able to let you know what your workplace can do, which will hopefully start to put your mind at ease.

T

HE EARLIER your manager becomes aware that a team member is struggling; the sooner you can start receive the support needed from them. Be sure to let your line manager know how they April/May 2019 Vanilla

can help you to improve your working environment, as it may be having a bigger impact on your mental health than first thought. The workplace can cause stress and worry due to persistent pressures, unclear responsibilities or a poor working environment. According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), in 2015/16 over 480,000 people in the UK reported that workrelated stress was making them ill. This amounts to nearly 40%

of all work-related illness.

E

MPLOYERS have a legal obligation to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their employees. Try not to feel anxious when talking to your HR manager and/or line manager; they will want to help you. Promoting positive mental health in the workplace can not only benefit the employees but it can benefit the business, reducing absence levels and improving overall performance.

We are here to help... Long-standing and debilitating mental impairments will more than likely constitute a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and confer rights on the employee. Historic show by Britain’s greatest sculptor

I

n a unique collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, Houghton Hall in Norfolk will present a major exhibition, Henry Moore at Houghton Hall: Nature and Inspiration from 1 May – 29 September. This will be the first significant show of the artist’s work in East Anglia. Curated by Sebastiano Barassi, the Henry Moore Foundation’s Head of Collections & Exhibitions, the exhibition will include several monumental outdoor pieces in the grounds of the house, as well as a selection of smaller works, models and etchings, which will be shown in the ground floor gallery spaces. There will also be sculptural interventions in the State Rooms, particularly in The Stone Hall.

Henry Moore (1898 – 1986) is considered to be one of the most important British artists of the 20th Century and arguably the most internationally celebrated sculptor of the modern era. Moore was a pioneer, and the first British artist to become a global star in his own lifetime. Moore’s sculpture can be seen in innumerable museum collections around the world. He worked in many different mediums, but his most recognizable works are large bronze groups using both figurative and abstract elements. He also produced fibreglass versions of some of his most iconic pieces, specifically for exhibition, and two of these will be on show at Houghton.

All these celebrations are a great way to gather your family and friends to commemorate a special occasion. All our ceremonies can take place at any location. You can choose one of our licensed venues, a non-licensed venue, on the beach, in a meadow or even your own home. Our guidance script allows you to fully personalise your ceremony, making it extra special and unique to you. You can include any spiritual or religious elements you’d like including handfasting, ring warming, lighting a unity candle and jumping the broom. We have a great team of celebrant registrars who are all friendly, organised, experienced, flexible and above all professional. They come to us from all manner of backgrounds,

so they need something robust, reliable, safe, easy to drive and large enough to accommodate people, shopping and all manner of other stuff. So 4x4s are by far the best option.” Some 4x4 models incorporate female-friendly features such as a powered tailgate that opens automatically when you wave your foot under the bumper – handy if you are carrying shopping or a baby — automated self-parking which guides the car into a tight spot, a high driving position for a clear view of the road ahead, plus a ‘birds- eye’ 360-degree view of surroundings from on-board cameras. Many models have designer interiors with specially selected fabrics and colours, and plenty of storage and cubby holes for those essential knick-knacks.

HESE DAYs more women are driving 4x4s to meet the needs of their increasingly busy and complex lives. With two working parents and children needing to be dropped off at school or sporting events, multitasking women need a vehicle fit for both work and family life. And in rural areas such as Norfolk, where country pursuits play a large roll in life, 4x4s are the go-to vehicle for many reasons. Steve Fisher, Managing Director of JSF 4x4 in Norwich –one of the region’s premier independent repair and service specialists for Land Rover and Range Rover – says: “Women make up 30% of our business, and this number is

increasing all the time. We never talk down to women; that image of the man being the primary car driver is a thing of the past. We have three women in the business here, so our female customers never feel outnumbered or intimidated. Women love us, many have been coming here for years because they are thrilled with our service, that’s the best test. “Many 4x4 manufacturers create models to suit women, for example the Range Rover Evoque has been designed with women in mind, and is often a second family car. Women are the primary drivers a lot of the time, towing the horse box, taking the kids to school and to sports events,

UT WHAT about taking care of your 4x4? As Steve explains, JSF is geared up to keep vehicles in the best condition and deliver complete customer peace of mind. “All our 4x4 services are carried out by experienced mechanics, and they can do everything, from a minor light bulb change to a new chassis. We also offer some specialist services such as tuning, overland travel and off-road preparation, winch fitting and suspension lifts. “Then there’s our recovery service, so if you are stuck on your drive or in the middle of nowhere, just give us a call and we will recover your vehicle for you.” ● JSF 4x4 Norfolk, 1 Spar Road, Norwich NR6 6BY t: 01603 787064 www.jsf4x4norfolk.co.uk

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams the Vanilla beauty expert

AS I HAVE GOT OLDER IT SEEMS AS IF MY LASHES AND BROWS HAVE BECOME SPARSE. WHAT CAN I DO? You’re right the older we get the more sparse and finer our hair becomes. This won’t have been helped by years of using mascara. A single coat of conditioner before applying mascara or brow pencil will help to strengthen, lengthen and thicken lashes and brows. The lash conditioner will also give you more of a dramatic look. Semipermanent eyebrow tattooing could be a great alternative to fill in the spare areas, as well as eyelash extensions which will add extra length and thickness to lashes. THE DOCTOR HAS SAID I HAVE ACNE ROSACEA, IT’S SORE AND LOOKS HORRIBLE. I WANT TO COVER IT UP BUT I’M NOT SURE WHAT TO USE. It’s worth either going back to see your doctor or seeing a nutritionist because there are lots of foods types that will help calm and sooth, equally there will be food types that will irritate the condition... i.e. spicy foods and alcohol may trigger flare ups. Other triggers are the environment, lifestyle, stress and cosmetics. To help with covering up acne rosacea, you are best off using all mineral make-up, as this will allow your skin to breath and won’t irritate your rosacea. I would also advise a consultation with a professional skin therapist to

52

advise you on products you should be using and also what to avoid. MY NAILS FLAKE AT THE END AND WILL NOT GROW? This is a common nail condition called onychoschisis. It is often caused by having hands that are constantly wet, frequent use and removal of nail polish or artificial nails, and continuous mild trauma to the nail plate. We suggest you book regular manicures to keep on top of the problem. Have you considered trying gelish on your nails? The polish will last you 2-3 weeks without chipping or peeling, and will in actual fact help your natural nails underneath to grow and become stronger. I WOULD LOVE TO TRY CONTOURING. WHAT WOULD I NEED AND WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SUGGEST? When contouring there are two different methods, using liquids or powders. If you’re contouring for the first time I would use powders as they are a lot easier to work with and really easy to blend! Applying the contour using a tapered brush (or a normal blusher brush) where shadows normally fall on the face e.g. under the cheek bones to excentuate them. It’s important to contour the whole face so use the product right into your hair line and behind the ears. I like to think of it as the number 3 drawn around the side of your face. Highlight tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupids bow, brow bone – basically anywhere you want to enhance. You can apply highlight with an oval blender brush but I tend to use my fingers as I find it easier to work with. Just remember to blend, blend, blend and you can’t go wrong. ■

ilates is a form of exercise that can work for anyone, no matter what their age, and has grown in popularity for the myriad health benefits it offers for both your physical and mental wellbeing. At The Pilates Studio Norwich, run by Lauren Murphy, the classical style of pilates is taught using both apparatus and mat exercises. Also known for assisting people overcome and prevent injuries, Lauren has witnessed

clients achieve major life transformations by practising the exercises. She said: “I have had clients who have undergone knee replacement surgery and helped them to increase their range of movement in the joint by using the Pilates apparatus we have here at the studio. “I have seen this have a huge impact in terms of allowing someone to get down on the floor to play with their grandchildren, or just to get

outside to do some gardening. “Equally, for younger clients who haven’t come to us with an injury, but have got stuck in the same gym routine for years, pilates has helped them to approach their fitness lifestyle in a different way.” WORKING MUSCLES

Lauren describes Pilates as increasing strength with stretch and control by providing the right tools to work muscles correctly facilitating greater movement,

“I have seen this have a huge impact in terms of allowing someone to get down on the floor to play with their grandchildren, or just to get outside to do some gardening.” while also balancing muscle strength to prevent, or overcome injuries. The knock-on benefits are creating better posture, coordination and balance, not to mention helping to combat stress and anxiety through mindful practice. “You really have to concentrate while doing the exercises and we teach people to breathe correctly which means that you don’t have much time to think about anything else while you are doing it,” said Lauren. “Pilates helps enormously with people feeling a greater sense of both physical and mental heath wellbeing afterwards.” Lauren, who is also a professional dancer, was first introduced to Pilates during her training as a way of increasing her dancer’s strength and flexibility, while also guarding against injury. For any beginners wishing to get started, Lauren recommends having a one-to-one introductory session using the studio’s equipment. “Some people think the apparatus looks scary, but it was devised to support movement,” she explained. “Once we have helped new clients familiarise themselves with the exercises they soon see their strength and flexibility increase.”■ The Pilates Studio, 4 Labour In Vain Yard, Norwich, NR2 1JD. t: 07891987055 www.thepilatesstudionorwich.com

Talking about Back Pain

BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) PRINCIPAL OSTEOPATH AT BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY Statistically, a whopping 70-85% of us will suffer from back pain in our lifetime. The majority of cases will be ‘non-specific back pain’, a diagnosis given when the symptoms can not be explained by a medical condition or from the results of investigations such as X-rays or MRI scans. In most cases, pain manifests when joints, ligaments and muscles are not functioning well rather than being diseased. With good care, exercise and some lifestyle changes back pain is often completely curable! We understand that back pain can be scary and that being unable to put socks on in the morning can make you feel OLD, disabled and disempowered but we are here to help! Osteopathic treatment, exercises and good advice can make a world of difference in resolving back pain. You DO NOT have to suffer, let us help you. Reducing unnecessary pain and suffering is what we’re all about. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment. BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIOR DESIGN HOW CAN I USE TARTAN FABRIC IN A MORE CONTEMPORARY WAY?

Plaid or tartan fabrics have extreme longevity in the fashion world which is possibly due to its versatility. There are endless patterns and colour combinations so there is always a place for them. Tartan is mostly associated with traditional interiors – classic wing back chairs or large downy sofas – but increasingly I have been using it in modern settings and this is partly down to the clever colourways being introduced in the new collections. Pair a strong wall, like Little Greene’s Thai Sapphire with some of the beautiful jewel like colours found in Abraham Moon’s National Trust Collections. Equally these gorgeous plaids will look great next to cool greys or neutral tones. A paired back room with minimal furniture could have some mono coloured wool curtains or a simple roman blind to add warmth and texture. A mid century chair upholstered in something like ‘Melbourne’ from Moon allows you to bring colour in to the room without going overboard (unless you want to!) and gives a nod to the current geometric trend. Mix it up with velvets for a modern feel but being careful with colour choices as it could slip back into cosy country cottage rather than 21st century chic. I would recommend looking at the Cosmopolitan Collection from Abraham Moon for some lovely contemporary colours and patterns. You could use a simple plaid rug to bring the tartan into the space or a very simple check on a dining chair to just add an element of this versatile pattern. If in doubt, start small with cushions and throws and then if you feel comfortable, go further with upholstery or curtains. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

THE 3 STEP PLAN

to a new garden

For over 30 years, Mike and his team at Perfect Plantings have been designing and creating gardens of every style and type – from traditional to contemporary. Creating a new garden is nowhere near as daunting as you would think and can add a lot of value to your home. Here’s Mike’s three step plan that, from start to finish, can take as little as 1-2 months:

Soft and hard landscaping all taken care of

1

After initial discussions about your garden, Mike arranges a site visit and will survey the area taking measurements and photos, discussing the various styles available and suitability for your plot. All aspects of sun and shade are taken note of, enabling him to choose the correct plants for you.

2

The Perfect Planting team source and supply all the materials required for the job – from preparation work, soil improvement and clearance – and design elements including paving, cedar cladding, smooth rendering, lighting etc. A fully inclusive quotation for the construction of your garden, supply of plants and planting of the areas is supplied.

Garden spaces designed to fit your lifestyle

3

Planting plans are prepared, in detailed colour, showing border layouts, individual plants and their spacings, along with selections of photos showing key plants to be used. They then set about planting up your garden, irrigating thoroughly once complete.

Don’t break the law-n! 7 GARDEN CRIMES TO AVOID THIS SPRING

Crimes you could be committing in your backyard and how to avoid them! 1. THEFT Keeping and eating windfallen fruit, that are blow into your garden, or stocking up on leaves, twigs and branches from neighbours’ trees, could be considered theft – as they constitute someone else’s property that you intend to permanently deprive them of. It’s a good idea to seek permission before retaining items that are technically possessions of another gardener. 2. FLY TIPPING Don’t just throw twigs or trimmings straight back over the garden fence though, as this could be viewed as garden waste fly tipping! Even scooping up cat droppings which you suspect to belong to a neighbour’s pet and tossing them back to where you think they belong could be interpreted as illegal disposal of waste! 3. TRESPASS Leaning into a neighbours garden to trim overhanging trees or plants – or for any other purpose – could be interpreted as trespassing, even if there are no physical barriers to cross. Green-fingered Brits should only take their shears up to the

74

boundary line of their property and agree with their neighbour if garden maintenance is required on their land.

a real risk of illegally pollutiing the air if they burn rubbish in their backyards or have a barbeque or bonfire that is too smoky.

4. BLOCKING LIGHT When put into practice, the ancient ‘right to light’ law, in effect means that if a window has received natural daylight for two decades or more, the owner of that building is entitled to forbid any obstruction to their illumination. This means that your neighbour could order you to tear down your new shed, tree or anything else in your garden if it blocks the sun reaching their windows.

6. SNOOPING If your children love to jump up and down on a trampoline in the garden then they could be subject to complaints of intruding into the neighbours’ privacy. Similar accusations could be levelled at those tempted to peek into next door’s home when climbing a ladder to clean the windows or when trimming a tree, so anyone rising above the height of backyard fences or hedges should be reminded of an individual’s right to privacy.

5. POLLUTION Popular readers who have lots of friends and family over for a garden social gathering could be guilty of noise pollution if they disturb neighbours, particularly overnight. Using noisy, mechanical garden equipment such as powered lawnmowers, chainsaws or even heating a hot tub could also leave you in legal hot water if you produce too many decibels for next door’s liking. Gardeners could also be running

7. VANDALISM Painting a fence that doesn’t belong to you could be considered minor vandalism, so it’s important to check the property deeds or land registry if you’re not sure. Attaching a washing line, garden hose or hanging basket to a neighbour’s outside wall could also potentially damage their property and may leave home owners in a spot of bother.

NUMBER TWENTY FOUR 80

E WERE very excited to return to Number Twenty Four, in Wymondham. Chef owner Jonathan, and his wife Isobel, have raised this fine dining restaurant to award-wining level, so I knew we’d be in for another treat. The atmosphere here is relaxed and informal, but everything is beautifully presented, and my dining companion and I were made to feel special throughout our meal. We began with a pre-starter of melon, pear, pumpkin seeds and rhubarb sorbet served in a shot glass. A light, refreshing and delicious start to prepare our palates. There was also some wonderful warm homemade bread rolls and butter. The menu of five starters and five mains offers some very imaginative dishes, and my fellow diner chose a seared breast of pigeon on a roasted apple, fig and celeriac salad, with a sherry vinaigrette dressing. The pigeon was beautifully pink and tender, with the other ingredients providing the perfect foil without

overpowering. I chose tiger prawns and smoked salmon with avocado, sun blush tomato and rocket salad, with a tangy citrus dressing. A lovely light starter, subtle flavours that blended perfectly, moist plump prawns and such lovely presentation. In fact the visual appeal of all the dishes here is clearly a high priority – you just can’t help but marvel at and admire the beauty of each plate before you tuck in.

F

OR MAIN course my partner chose seared loin of venison on piquant red cabbage, bubble & squeak, and a red wine juniper jus. He found the venison perfectly cooked, moist and melt in the mouth, while the red cabbage was warm and piquant in the background. A very well put together dish. My roasted sweet potato gnocchi, leeks, goats cheese and butternut squash sauce with toasted pine nuts was the ultimate sophisticated comfort food; rich, sweet and cheesy, very moreish and utterly delicious. I only left some on my Vanilla April/May 2019

plate to leave room for dessert! The sweet treat for me was vanilla creme brûlée, warm banana and chocolate cake, with coconut ice cream. The perfect snap of the sugar crust before diving into the lovely smooth rich cream below – the mark of a perfect brûlée. Gorgeous ice cream and a not-to-sweet warm cake. Very good indeed. My partner chose a sugar glazed tangy lemon tart, served with pistachio and amaretto ice cream. The perfect balance of sweet and lemony, not too sharp, and a wonderful buttery base. He pronounced it the best lemon tart he’d ever eaten. We drank a rich and full-bodied Chilean Merlot with our meal, which was the perfect accompaniment. My partner also had a glass of creamy chilled Monbazillac dessert wine with his lemon tart. Another faultless evening at Number Twenty Four. Food prepared with love, a great deal of skill, a real understanding of how flavours work together and charming staff. There is nothing pretentious here, simply fine dining at its very best. BY STE VE HE ARNDEN

Since my visit last October to Niagara Falls I have been mildly obsessed with dessert wines. The ice wines produced there are so rich and complex that I consider them to be good value for money. But they are really not for everyday drinking. However one dessert wine from Domaine la Grangette in the Languedoc region of France, is!!

VOLÉ AUX MOINEAUX 2005 £19

The Volé aux Moineaux 2005 is a perfect dessert wine and, as it is Easter, would accompany the traditional Simnel cake perfectly. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are hand picked late in the Autumn to ensue the grapes have maximum sugar content. Fermented in cool temperatures to gain optimum fruit and depth of flavours. A dark amber colour indicates its sweetness. Sip this soft rich white wine which when cooled is fabulous. You may like to try it with your Easter egg too! At £19 per half bottle it is an experience not to be missed. The Sauvignon Blanc grape is very versatile and is grown throughout the worlds wine regions.

JAKE GARWOOD Jake Garwood, Head Chef and Manager of newly-opened Liberty, in Wroxham, has worked for some of Norfolk’s best restaurants, including St Giles House and The Library in Norwich. His aim is to establish Liberty as the place to go for relaxed fine dining, with the emphasis firmly on seasonal food and local ingredients.

Being creative and learning new things. We make everything from scratch here, from bread to ice cream, chocolates and even cheese. I started out as a pastry chef, so baking is my passion. We have started doing afternoon teas at Liberty, so I get to make some wonderful treats for customers. How important are local ingredients to you?

Very and we always use food from the Norfolk boundary where possible – meat, fish and vegetables. One of my favourite suppliers is Tavern Tasty, which is a rare meat breeder and butcher. The quality is impeccable. Seasonality is also key for us, using what is good at the right time of year. It means we can offer food at its peak, such as English strawberries, which are the best in the world. It’s about using the abundance

82

of superb local ingredients, and cooking them simply and with respect. What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

I am a big fan of sandwiches, and bread is one of my favourite things to eat. My ultimate sandwich is quite simple; some good bread, a little salted butter, honey glazed ham and salad. Perfect! What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

Good question, there are so many things I am interested in and looking into at the moment.

© SYLVAINE POITAU

What inspires you in the kitchen?

“We make everything from scratch here, from bread to ice cream, chocolates and even cheese.”

I love the idea of foraging because it’s the ultimate way to find local produce. Things like wild garlic, blackberries, cow parsley and dandelions, which we use to make delicious jam. Our suppliers do provide us with some foraged ingredients, but I think it will get more and more popular and I certainly want to use our wonderful natural resources as much as possible. It’s very rewarding and adds so much to the menu. ■ Liberty, Norwich Road, Wroxham NR12 8RX Tel: 01603 782337 enquiries@libertywroxham.co.uk

Vanilla Reader Review

L

AST year, Vanilla introduced readers to the Pear tree Inn, a newly-refurbished pub on Unthank Road, in Norwich. This traditional, cosy pub is already incredibly popular with locals and, aside from a great line-up of wines, local ales – plus their very own Pear Tree craft lager – owners Nick and Lesley Pears wanted to introduce hearty pub food, including a great Sunday roast. We are delighted to tell you that the Pear Tree has been offering food for a few months now, and it’s going down a storm. “We are open for food Thursday to Saturday until 11.30pm, and on Sunday from midday until 3pm for Sunday roast,” says Nick. “We are packed out and I think the late opening is ideal for people who want something other than a takeaway at that time of night. “We wanted a menu that reflects the values of the pub; traditional, hearty and tasty. Dishes like beef stew and dumplings, homemade pies, kippers, ham, egg and chips are really hitting the mark.”

84

I wanted to try the Pear Tree food for myself, so I took my partner along one Sunday lunchtime to try the roast. There is nothing more quintessentially English than sitting in a cosy pub by the fire on a Sunday afternoon waiting for your roast to arrive. My partner started the ball rolling with a pint of Pear Tree’s own craft lager, and he said it was very good; smooth and drinkable. The Sunday roast menu is simple – topside of beef or pork, or a vegetarian crumble. Unable to choose, my partner decided to have a little of each, and I went for the veggie crumble. Both dishes come with all the trimmings and more, and when they arrived at our table there was a real ‘wow’ moment. There was certainly no danger of us going home hungry after eating here! The trimmings included crisp roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, carrots, broccoli and Yorkshire Pudding. A special mention must go to the delicious honey-glazed parsnips, wholegrain

mustard mash, and a side order of very cheesy cauliflower cheese. Everything tasted wonderful, the meat was beautifully tender, and my crumble was very good too. “As good as my mother used to make,” was my partner’s comment on the meal; a huge compliment to the Pear Tree, but I think exactly what they wanted to achieve. For dessert Lesley brought us a portion of her homemade Pear Tree Banoffee Pie to share. It was the best I had ever tasted, not too sweet, but still rich and indulgent. We fought over the last spoonful! Nick and Lesley have got the food just right. This is the 'roast with the most' and just what people want; good, honest, homemade and excellent value for money. Not to be missed. You can’t book, so get there early on a Sunday lunchtime. REVIEWER: LUCY OHSTEN

Chrissi Rix Style Consultant

My City Life shops on offer, some fantastic independent shops, but also a good high street with two shopping malls. This is not like any other city, it has its own style and that means there is so much more choice, variety and fashion innovation.

Style consultant Chrissi Rix is the Director of The Style Show, in Norwich, a unique retail fashion experience for women that offers styling, fashion shows and shopping with a difference. She has juggled a successful career, developing a reputation as a sought-after stylist, while also bringing up four children. Chrissi lives in Poringland with her family.

What makes Style Show so different? I recognised there was a gap in the market for women of 40plus who want authentic advice about colours and what suits them. Style Show is the perfect way to shop if you don’t have the time or the confidence to do it on your own, and we help women to find their personal signature style. This can be a life-changing experience and give them a huge boost

– especially if they have been through things like divorce or bereavement. It’s wonderful for us, too, helping them to look and feel fantastic. Our team of seven is totally focused on life enhancement, offering a friendly, approachable and non-intimidating experience. We look after you, help you find the clothes, make up and accessories that are right for you… and we all have great fun as well! What do you think of the Norwich fashion scene? We are very lucky in Norwich, we have a great range of

What are your hidden gems in and around the city? The Cosy Club and The Ivy in Norwich are my favourite places to eat and drink and the Red Lion in Eaton, which is next to our studio, is a great watering hole. I love seeking out clothing in the independent fashion shops. They offer individual pieces and different labels to the high street, to create a unique look. ■ For more details about The Style Show visit www.styleshow.co.uk or their facebook page. Email enquiries@styleshow.co.uk or call 07487 796853.

How did you get into fashion and styling? I started out as a model, then re-trained at the London College of Fashion with the worldwide stylist and lecturer Polly Holman. I’ve now been styling and dressing women for over 18 years, but overall I have more than 30 years’ experience in the local, national and international fashion industry.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? I love to travel when I can, and city breaks are great. I particularly love Barcelona and Rome. I also enjoy skiing and spending time with my family and friends.
