“I’ve never had a singing lesson before!” The Voice’s Jade Mayjean Peters opens up about her journey and why she’ll never give up on her dream…

W

hile superstardom for many is a million miles away, for local pop star-in-the-making Jade Mayjean Peters, it is soon to be a reality. Despite losing out during the Knock-outs, the waitress from Ipswich – who has the pop princess look down to a tee, her coach Kylie Minogue describing her as ‘sexy’ and ‘sassy’ – will stop at nothing to succeed. Taking time out of her busy schedule, we caught up with the soon-tobe starlet and here, she reveals all about her journey so far, what it’s like to work with Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue and how The Voice is just the beginning…

Hi Jade! Wow, what a performance at the Blind auditions! How did it feel? I was so nervous! But I was definitely ready for it.

14

You clearly blew the judges away, how did you come to choose Team Kylie? I’ve always swayed between Kylie and Will.i.am, but Kylie stole my heart as she was so lovely and was feeling it from the get-go. You out-sang Gemyni in the Battles Round - it must have been difficult going up against two voices… I was really nervous, especially going up against twins, as they already have an automatic connection. It was really nervewracking and I didn’t know if they were going to be tactical and completely counteract my voice. But it went well and I’m so proud. How has it been working with Kylie? It’s been so good, she’s really bubbly and enthusiastic – and she’s given me some really good tips. She’s like me, in that she’s driven so it’s nice to feed off somebody like that. You’ve also auditioned for the X Factor, and one time even got as far as Boot Camp… Yeah, that was the furthest I got in that competition but The Voice has definitely opened more doorways for me.

Jade Mayjean singing for survival on The Voice

What do you think has changed to get you further this time? Doing more gigs and singing more in general has strengthened my voice. And during the process we’ve had singing lessons – I’ve never had a singing lesson before! So it has definitely taken my voice to the next level. What do you plan to do next? I will continue to gig as much as I can and I’m also working on an EP. The Voice has given me a platform and no matter what, I will still go after my dream of being a successful recording artist because I will always love singing – nothing’s going to stop me! It sounds like you’re already on your way! What advice can you offer other aspiring musicians? I just think if you want it enough then go for it and don’t let anyone hold you back. As long as you stick to your guns and do what you want to do, then you can do anything! By Leanne Wilcox

A roaring success!

Disney’s award-winning musical The Lion King has now entered it’s 15th year. Vanilla hit London’s West-End to see why the show is such an amazing success. The Lion King movie was always a great favourite in our family, so I had always wondered how the stage production would match up. So, when a night out in London, reviewing for Vanilla, was offered I snapped it up! Since its West End premiere in October 1999, the show has welcomed more than 11 million guests and remains the West End’s best-selling stage production. Winning over 70 theatre awards world-wide, Julie Taymor’s unforgettable stage production follows the adventures of the young lion cub Simba, as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King. The show, still thriving at London's Lyceum Theatre, is a huge hit with both audiences

Queen Superior room at The Cavendish London

and critics. It really is fascinating to see how puppets are brought to life by actors who quickly become one unit. Visually captivating as well as the wonderful popular music and songs with which we are so familiar. Elton John and Tim Rice have added three new numbers to the five they wrote for the award-winning score of the animated film. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, including the award-winning Can You Feel The Love Tonight. When the show was over we headed back to our hotel, the 4 star Cavendish London in Jermyn Street where Head Concierge, Richard, was waiting to welcome us back. After a wonderful night in a Queen

Superior room, we indulged ourselves in the sumptuous breakfast before heading back to Suffolk. This hotel boasts some of London’s best views, spanning from The Shard to The London Eye. Theatreland is so close by, as are all the main tourist locations, so you can explore London and pop back for much needed refreshment and luxury in this very warm and friendly hotel. We booked through our excursion through Superbreak. com, the short break specialists. Trains from Ipswich, show tickets and hotels all booked together – quick and convenient. A range of hotels and theatre tickets are on offer to suit different budgets and it’s reassuring to know you’re not being ripped off with exorbitant West End prices! n

Vanilla Restaurant Review

Berridges

B

erridges, who this year celebrate twenty years in Dial Lane Ipswich, have earned a glowing reputation both for the quality and exclusivity of their jewellery, and for the unrivalled service and expertise offered to its customers. However, tucked away upstairs is another jewel in their crown – the first floor restaurant, which is waiting to be discovered, if you have not already done so. The restaurant is light and airy with a calming atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Alongside old favourites, such as open and

40

toasted sandwiches, cheesy fishcakes and soup of the day, there are always daily specials made fresh in house and cooked to perfection. From homemade quiches, to delicious meat and vegetarian dishes. If you have room for desert, or maybe just want to pop in for a coffee and a cake, the homemade cakes and scones we think are to die for! To tempt you, how about warm chocolate cake, fresh lemon meringue pie or a warm cheese scone? Under the direction of Manageress, Louise Norman, the food, whether breakfast, lunch or

afternoon tea, is all homemade on the premises and she has a dedicated team working with her to make sure customers receive a warm welcome and enjoy excellent service. Customer service and creating the right atmosphere has always been very important to the business. Berridges is also a licensed restaurant, so if you fancy a cheeky glass of wine with your lunch, there are various good house wines to choose from. The lunch period can get very busy so it is advisable to book in advance to reserve your table. Berridges is open from 9.30am until 4pm Monday to Saturday. your beauty questions solved ...by Sue Carter at Image Salon

Q. I have poly cystic ovary syndrome, I have heard that IPL (Intense Pulse Light) hair removal would be a solution. Can you advise? Poly cystic ovary syndrome can cause hormonal hair growth especially on the face and is a concern for many women. Laser or IPL hair removal can be very effective with good long term effects, although not permanent due to the excessive hair growth caused by the syndrome, but it is definitely an option which would be beneficial for you. Rather than buying the equipment I would suggest you invest your money in going to a reputable salon and having the treatment done professionally, as the power of the salon machines are far greater than the home versions, and which will deliver better results. Most salons and clinics will give you a complementary consultaion and patch test which I would highly recommend. I suffer with painful ingrowing toenails, what causes them and how should I prevent them? An ingrowing toe nail can be extremely painful. There are several possible causes of an ingrown toenail, including

Email your beauty questions to Sue at info@imagesalon.co.uk

46

incorrectly cut nails, tight fitting shoes or a nail infection. Treating them can be simple, there are several things you can do to prevent them. When trimming your toenails either file or cut them straight across, never cut the corners at an angle as this can make the nails grow into the skin. After a hot bath, once the skin is softened, gently push the skin away from the nail with a cuticle pusher or cotton bud but do not try to dig out the ingrowing nail. Make sure your shoes aren’t too tight and are comfortable with enough space around the toes. A visit to a chiropodist or your doctor would be advisable if the problem persists. Now I have hit 40, I feel it’s all downhill from here! What can i use on my skin and what facials would you recommend? Life begins at 40! Spring clean your skin. I would recommend a microdermabrasion facial or a skin peel to give your skin a pick me up and bring a glow back to your skin. Both treatments deeply exfoliate, removing dead skin cells and improving the texture and smoothness of the skin. As well as creating a youthful glow, these treatments wil treat a wide range of skin problems including wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, flaking skin, enlarged pores, acne scars, pigmentation, dry skin, age spots as well as promoting the production of fresh collagen and cells. A good skincare routine is also critical – before replacing your normal products get some skincare advice on which products will best suit your skin. n
