NEWS COMING
SOON ! Father Christmas will be arriving any day at Jarrold! Once he’s arrived, you can find him in his Grotto on the third floor. Father Christmas will be in store everyday from Sunday 29 November until Christmas Eve and is waiting to hear those special Christmas wishes, plus everyone who visits him receives a lovely gift!
newsonthestreet ....and on the Norwich Grapevine BLACK FRIDAY As this issue of Vanilla hits the streets, it's likely that you will be too - heading into Norwich for some pre-Christmas bargains. People who wait until Boxing Day to dive into the sales are doing it all wrong. Black Friday, this year on November 27th, has become the biggest shopping day of the year, when retailers knock prices across much of their stock to kick-start the gift-buying season. This year, internet sales over the 24-hour period are expected to surpass £1bn for the first time in UK history. The Centre for Retail Research estimates total Black Friday sales (including in stores) reaching £1.39bn and shopping over the entire weekend nearing £3.5bn. Let’s hope that some of that gets spent with our independents!
WELL DONE TO... B&O NORWICH!
Anyone who wants to know how to succeed in business, should take a good look at Bang & Olufsen of Norwich, just home from Budapest after beating over 60 other dealerships to win the Bang & Olufsen UK Partner of the Year award. The international parent company, Bang & Olufsen hangs its entire reputation on the quality of its products and services and does not give away such accolades lightly.
WE LOVE... NORFOLK GIN Norfolk Gin is an artisan gin, hand made in the fine city of Norwich and is made in small batches of 22 stone jars. It is made by Jonathan Redding who slowly combines botanicals and neutral spirit to produce a uniquely flavoured gin. It is a compound or ‘Bathtub’ gin and has a soft golden-green hue. Each bottle is filled and sealed by hand. Perfect with tonic and slice of lime, the bottle alone makes it a great Christmas present. £40 Jarrold Deli

Do you find Shopping a Struggle? For many of us the answer is YES! That eagerly awaited trip to the High Street to pick out some great new outfits can suddenly leave you feeling disillusioned and disappointed. So what is the answer? The right boutique, an Image consultant or Personal Shopper? With The Style Show you can enjoy all of these in just one place! Visit The Style Studio and we will spend time with you, giving you your own personal colour and shape analysis. You will discover those style rules that you always wanted to know. By the time the session has finished you will understand why it is sometimes so hard to shop and to really find what you are looking for. But we don’t leave it there! After your initial styling you will be invited to The Style Lounge, an Aladdin’s cave of clothing, accessories and footwear to show you how your style rules work in practice.
The Style Show stylist will spend individual time with you, suggesting looks that will make you look and feel fabulous. The Style Lounge will be solely yours and you may bring friends if you wish. After your first visit you will leave with information to last a lifetime and possibly lots of things you love too. Our clothing is sourced to suit shape and colouring and to give a signature look at simple prices. With ranges from Paris, London, the Far East and Italy there is something for everyone, with many labels difficult to find elsewhere.
Try our exclusive ‘Rescue Range’ of jeans, trousers and dresses, or our magic leggings, guaranteed to make you appear almost one size smaller! All are designed specifically with you in mind and to avoid those dressing dilemmas! You can visit The Style Studio and Style Lounge again, free, whenever you wish for more of the same, just book an appointment! We are also open every Friday for drop in, between 10am and 5pm. You can find us at 115 City Road, Norwich NR1 2HL, with parking right outside to make it even easier.

here are some overworked words, “stunning” being one I hear regularly. But when Škoda named their top model range “Superb”, the word fits the description perfectly. My dictionary says: ‘very good; excellent; impressively splendid’ and in my opinion, the car is all these. The Superb is just that, superb! This car is so well put together, so well designed, so well equipped, so easy to live with, put succinctly, difficult to fault. The new 2016 model is even bigger than its predecessor. The interior is palatial! There is a sense of quality, which is evident as soon as one enters. The adjustment possibilities for the seats and steering wheel will accommodate the oddest shaped driver, and of course, being Škoda, all the controls are intuitive and have a great feel to them. Little touches like the way the drinks holder allows for one-handed

opening, or the way the centre armrest works are just typical of Škoda. I was particularly impressed by the rear seat accommodation too with its generous leg and headroom. Inside there are all the comforts required – storage areas in very conceivable nook and cranny, even umbrellas with their own hide away in the front arm rests – what a great idea! The same goes for the ice scraper, located in the fuel filler cap and the removable LED torch in the boot. I’m sure these are inexpensive additions for the manufacturer but to the experience of owning and using a car, such an asset! These features show the thought and concern for the occupants, which

Škoda have given to their product. The exterior styling is elegant and understated, sharp lines at the rear with flowing lines down the length and a Škoda family face with lovely detail in the lighting. This will not look out of place at the golf club. And as for any equipment and luggage, the boot space is cavernous! There are features galore for ease of driving, safety, comfort and convenience befitting a vehicle of high status, so it’s good to know that Robinsons are on hand to help the decisions and to explain the benefits. “It is often a good idea for couples to each have an account with a small amount of money in their sole name, even if their finances are run jointly”
Could joint assets be a problem if one of us falls ill? MY QUESTION: My husband and I hold all our assets in joint names, to make things easier when one of us dies, but I have now been told that can cause problems if one of us becomes mentally incapable – what should we do?
44
J
OINT ASSETS usually pass automatically to the survivor when one joint-owner dies, without needing a Grant of Probate, so it does simplify things for the survivor. However, if one of you becomes mentally incapable of dealing with your financial affairs, the other one may be prevented from using any joint accounts you hold together – because once a person loses mental capacity, their consent for joint bank accounts to be operated by either of the account holders ceases to have effect.
This means that if your husband became mentally incapable of dealing with his financial affairs, and your bank was aware of that, the bank would be entitled to freeze your joint accounts. It is often a good idea for couples to each have an account with a small amount of money in their sole name, even if their finances are run jointly, so that if a joint account is suddenly frozen they still have access to some money, while their partner’s finances are being sorted out.
Vanilla December 2015/January 2016
REAL LIVES
M
ORE IMPORTANTLY, however, you and your husband should each make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), by which you can appoint people (Attorneys) to deal with your financial affairs during your lifetime if you become incapable of dealing with your own finances – not only through loss of mental capacity, but also because of accident or sudden illness. You can appoint each other, but it is a good idea to appoint more than one Attorney, so that if one of you dies or becomes incapable, the other still has an Attorney to deal with his or her affairs if required.
I
F YOU do not make an LPA and you become mentally incapable of managing your financial affairs, somebody (usually a close relative) must apply to the Court of Protection for a ‘Deputy’ to be appointed to manage your financial affairs. The application is lengthy and can take several months to process. In addition there are many Court fees to consider, including an application fee, a fee on appointment of the Deputy, and an annual administration fee. There are additional fees for further directions e.g. sale of property. There are two types of LPA, and you can choose whether to make one or both types:
and financial affairs. This may include paying your bills and potentially, selling your house. You can put restrictions and conditions on your Attorney’s powers in the LPA if you wish. PERSONAL WELFARE LPA: This allows your Attorney to make decisions about your personal welfare, which may include giving or refusing consent to medical treatment. Decisions under a Personal Welfare LPA can only be made on your behalf when you lack the capacity to make them yourself. By making an LPA whilst you
are mentally alert you have the knowledge that, should you become ill and cannot deal with your own affairs, your Attorney will be able to step in and look after everything for you until you recover. We would recommend that you have your LPA drawn up by a professional legal practitioner. Just like a Will there are certain stipulations which need to be met to make an LPA valid. Should you wish to consider making an LPA, please contact Steeles Law and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. ■
We are here to help... For further advice on this issue or to obtain a quote for us to draw up an LPA, please contact the Wills and Probate team at Steeles Law. Our specialists, Angela Ireland (top right) and Karen Bacon (below right) are on hand to help.

THE QI TO LIFE?
Can acupuncture help you to conceive? One woman is convinced Acupuncture is probably the best-known complementary medicine. Based on ancient principles developed in China some 2,000 years ago, its success in treating a number of ailments and conditions is well documented.
“Acupuncture aims to bring balance back to the body by inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of qi - the body’s vital energy,” explains Rebecca Geanty, one of Norwich’s most experienced
52
registered practitioners. “Lifestyle and environment can disturb, block or deplete qi, and this can result in some symptoms of pain and illness.” Rebecca sees a wide range of people who suffer from conditions such as migraines and headaches, stress, anxiety and depression, insomnia, eczema and asthma as well as giving pain relief and helping people give up smoking. But most of the work she does is with fertility and pregnancy. “Many women struggle to get
pregnant, and the process for them can be incredibly stressful - especially repeated IVF cycles,” she says. “I can help in a number of ways and I have a very holistic approach. Firstly I assess their lifestyle, sleep and diet and help to regulate those as well as reducing their stress levels. I will also select appropriate points which have the function of regulating the menstrual cycle and increasing the blood flow into the uterus. “Having someone to talk to is

BEAUTY
vital if you are struggling to conceive, and this is another very important part of what I offer.” Rebecca has a high success rate in helping women who want to conceive. One of her clients, Charlotte from Norwich, had been trying to conceive for 18 months when she went to see Rebecca. “I went through a very traumatic miscarriage, which left me stressed and emotionally vulnerable,” says Charlotte. “I really put pressure on myself to get pregnant again quickly, but nothing was happening. After 18 months I went to see Rebecca, and I admit that I was very sceptical, but after everything I had been through I was willing to try it. “From our first meeting Rebecca was incredibly supportive. Before treatment began she assessed every aspect of my life, both emotional and physical. After an initial private session, which I found very positive, I went to see her every week in her multi-bed setting, where I was treated with other clients at the same time. It is still very private and personal, but it helps keep the cost down if you want weekly appointments. After just two months I fell pregnant, which was fantastic! “Rebecca is also helping me prepare for the birth with pre-birth acupuncture which I will have from week 36 and a natural induction treatment (with my midwifes permission) if I need it. “I cannot recommend Rebecca highly enough. The entire experience has been amazing. And to get such a quick result – I can’t understand why more people don’t do this!” Multi-bed sessions with Rebecca are £24 for 1hr 15min. For more information, or to book, call 01603 514195, or go to norwichacupuncturerooms.co.uk Acupuncture should not replace the need for medical advice
SKIN AND TONIC PLEASE! SARAH BUCKLEY AT ATLAS COSMETIC MEDICINE
Sarah Buckley of Atlas Cosmetic Medicine, has been carrying out facial aesthetic treatments for over eight years now, and since moving into her lovely Pottergate clinic at the start of the year, she has started to focus on helping her clients make the very best of their skin. Sarah says, ‘Skin in optimum condition will need less in the way of injectable anti-wrinkle treatments, and will also heal better and faster after any treatment, so there are extra benefits to having the skin performing at its best’. Having researched the market, Sarah opted to have a HydraFacial machine in her clinic and is thrilled with the results her clients have had following a HydraFacial treatment. The HydraFacial process has six steps and uses advanced vortex technologies, which detox, cleanse, exfoliate, brighten, hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Impurities and blackheads are gently drawn out during the process and there are optional extra treatments for acne, reducing brown spots and pigmentation, boosting older skin. A signature HydraFacial treatment will give fabulous results, which can be extended with regular monthly treatments. Six and twelve month packages offer extra value (as well as extra gorgeous skin), and flexible payment terms are available. ELEMIS EXOTIC MOISTURE DEW FACIAL At Thai Herbal Retreat Spa
S
TEP OVER Thai Herbal Retreat Spa’s threshold and Norwich instantly feels thousands of miles away as you immediately sense you have entered somewhere exotic in the Far East. The Thai-inspired décor mixed with the heady aromas of Jasmine and Neroli infuse the salon where its owner, Peerada Morgan Johnson, greeted me with a warm, welcoming smile. As with all reputable beauty salons, there is a medical form to fill in to make sure the therapists are aware of any conditions clients may be suffering from before embarking on treatments. Peerada then showed me to the relaxing and comfortable waiting area to discuss the best treatment for me based on my lifestyle, diet and exercise. IT SHOWS IN THE FACE
After taking a good, long look at my face and determining where fine lines are taking hold
54
around my eyes and forehead, she quickly tapped into the fact I don’t drink nearly enough water to keep my skin hydrated. Her diagnosis was that I should undergo an Elemis Exotic Moisture Dew Facial aimed at nourishing my thirsty skin. Wrapped in warm towels, my therapist first gave my feet and calves a gentle massage by way of helping me relax and forget about my daily tasks, which she explained is the welcoming touch. Next my face and eyes were thoroughly cleansed of the day’s make up before the beautiful Elemis oil was applied to my face, neck and shoulders.
My therapist used gentle pressure to push my skin upwards before applying a soothing eye and face mask. My eyes were covered to block out the light and while the Elemis mask was doing its work to remove the impurities in my skin, she massaged my arms and hands. She followed with this with a sublimely, relaxing head massage in which I lost all sense of time. Once complete, the Elemis exfoliating cream was applied followed by a toner to freshen up the appearance of my skin, and finally, my face and neck was covered in a replenishing moisturiser. If I had to score the treatment I would give it 10/10 and was thankful of the reminder that when it comes to facials and massage the Thai way is often the best way. Elemis Exotic Moisture Dew Facial

RESOLUTION #2 LOSE WEIGHT
The most common resolution, can’t face but what if you just can going it alone? Cambridge Weight Plan have been successfully helping people lose weight and keep it off for more than 30 years. They offer a range of weight loss programmes, which are flexible enough to fit in with your own lifestyle, along with the one-to-one support of your very own Cambridge Consultant. You can choose the complete meal replacement option, or opt for one of their programmes that include healthy eating alongside meal replacements. Cambridge Consultants are unique as they have also lost weight on the Plan. Your local consultant is Joanne Carson and she can be contacted by email at joanne.carson@ntlworld.com or telephone 07779 483776.
RESOLUTION #3 GET PREGNANT
If getting pregnant isn't proving to be as easy as you'd hoped then you might be considering fertlity treatment. The good news is that Norfolk is home to one of the top fertility clinics in the country, Bourn Hall, so help is at hand. Bourn Hall centres have achieved outstanding success rates for thousands of NHS funded patients with almost 50% being successful on their first cycle of treatment. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that three cycles of IVF treatment provide the highest level of success and at Bourn Hall, 80% of patients have a baby when they receive this number of treatments. However, recent changes in the provision of fertility treatment mean that fewer people will be eligible for NHS-funded IVF. To assist their patients, Bourn Hall has been investigating other ways they can finance treatment by putting a plan into place before they start. This includes a ‘money back guarantee’ for those who don’t have a baby at the end of their treatment. www.bourn-hall-clinic.co.uk Vanilla December 2015/January 2016

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Carter Vanilla beauty expert
IS IT OK TO STORE SPF PRODUCTS IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT OF THE CAR? No, especially during summer. Once the car heats up in the sun, high temperatures can cause the sunscreen’s active ingredients to degrade and products such as lip balm will melt. When you apply a degraded sunscreen or a product which contains degraded sunscreen such as lip balm or hand cream to your skin, you’re not getting the SPF protection that’s indicated on the bottle. In fact, you might be applying nothing more than a thick moisturiser which has little to no SPF. HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT BRONZER? The key is to find a colour that’s two or three shades deeper than your natural tone. Fair skin looks best in peachy hues, which add a bit of warmth. For olive skin, pick a shade that’s more beige than brown, and for darker skin look for a rich bronze with an orange or apricot undertone. Apply the bronzer using a dense, fluffy powder blush with a light pressure, along the hairline, the bridge of your nose, and the sides of your cheeks. If you darken the whole face, you’ll create a muddy shadow, and you want to create an illusion of colour where the sun would naturally bronze your face.
60
ANY TIPS ON HOW TO SHOW OFF MY DÉCOLLETÉ THIS PARTY SEASON? Begin by preparing the skin – exfoliate the area with a moisturising body scrub, this will help to get rid of any loose, dead skin cells (which may cause the area to look dehydrated) and reveal fresh glowing skin. To enhance cleavage, apply a shimmery lotion from the clavicle down, followed by a dab of cream highlighter over the top of the breasts. This creates an illusion of lifted pert breasts. Finish with a dusting of bronzing powder in the centre of your chest. Apply all the layers softly and blend them using a big fluffy brush similar to the one you would use for your bronzer. HOW CAN I DO A QUICK AND EASY SMOKY EYE? There are different types of smoky eyes. The ones that fade light to dark are probably the most difficult to achieve. If you are a beginner in smoky eyes, using a single base colour is the best way to start. A smoky eye can be achieved with any colour range so pick a solid dark colour and cover your entire lid. Next, pick a light beige or cream tone and place it right under the brow line. Last, you will need a shade of brown or beige that is one or two tones darker than your skin colour. Place this between the brow colour and the lid colour directly under the brow bone, this will allow for an awesome contoured look. Finally, take your favorite blending brush and blend until you cannot tell when one colour starts and the other one ends. You will have a fabulous smoky eye within minutes. n

1. LIGHT COLOURS
2016 HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Choose light colours to make a small/dark room feel bigger and brighter.
Tiling Tips
2. BE ADVENTUROUS!
However, don’t be afraid of colour, which can also create some unique effects and environments in your home. 3. DON'T COMPROMISE
See tiles as an investment, not a cost; never compromise on quality, which can still be picked up at great prices. Tile shades, surface finish and tile patterns vary. It is recommended that you see, touch and feel a full tile sample in your home setting before you finalise your selection.
by Mark Barber Professional Decorator
4. PLAN AHEAD
Always purchase an additional 5-10% more tiles than you actually need. This allows you (or the tiler) to compensate for cuts and breakages and ensures you have the same batch/shade should you have needed additional tiles. Most companies will offer a refund on unused boxes of tiles. Purchase high quality tile trims that are sufficiently wide to accommodate both the tile and a layer of tile adhesive. 5. BLEND IN GROUT LINES
Choose a tile grout colour that compliments your tiles. Always use high quality adhesives and impervious non-pigmented grouts. Where joints are not completely watertight moisture can be absorbed into the tile body causing stains to show through the glaze. December 2015/January 2016 Vanilla
6. BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER
If your wall or floor will require a lot of tile cuts (i.e. around fixtures/fittings), choose smaller tiles to give a better flow. Check for uneven floors and rectify with levelling screeds. 7. USE BORDERS AND DECORS
Add extra interest by breaking up your wall tiling with border tiles, decors and metallic listellos. 8. CHECK THE SUITABILITY
Need floor tiles? Make sure you check that the floor tile wear rating (PEI rating) is suitable for your intended area/use. Another question you may need to ask is do you need ceramic or porcelain tiles? Porcelain tiles are more suitable for outdoors and domestic floors where heavy traffic/abrasion is anticipated. 9. MAINTENANCE – GET THE RIGHT ADVICE
If you are purchasing natural stone tiles (i.e. travertine, marble, slate), make sure you get the right advice for sealing and treating the tiles before and after fixing. Always apply grout protector to the grout lines, this will protect the grout against greasy dirt and spots and makes cleaning easier. 10. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ADVICE
Don’t be afraid to ask sales assistants for advice; they will be fully trained to answer all your queries and may bring to your attention things you may not have otherwise considered.

Your Christmas Carpet Survival Guide Here is your handy cut-out-and-keep guide to make sure your carpets survive Christmas!
1
What’s to be done when Santa arrives at your home and the inevitable HOT EMBERS AND ASH are left on your carpet from the chimney? A wool hearth mat will keep embers from burning your carpet. Cool ashes are best picked out with the vacuum cleaner. We always suggest a suction cleaner, especially on wool carpets. A beater bar can be used on heavily soiled man-made carpets.
2
So the elves are relaxing after preparing for the Big Day and have spilt a full GLASS OF RED WINE on the cream living room carpet. Firstly, do not panic, all is not ruined. All you
68
need is warm water in a spray bottle and a roll of plain white kitchen roll. Blot as much of the red wine up as you can, use fresh sheets of kitchen roll, this will pull the liquid from the pile. Spray the warm water on the effected area. Continue to blot until the wine is mopped out – with red wine it is important to do this as quickly as possible. Remember this may not remove the stain entirely, if this is the case PLEASE DO NOT USE CHEMICAL CLEANERS.
These cause more problems than they solve. If you are left with a faint stain, call in a professional cleaning company...
3
We know that little children and pets can get very excited at Christmas. We have heard that Rudolph is the worse! So if you have an accident with SOLID MESS you’ll need an old spatula, kitchen roll and warm water in a spray bottle. Scrape up as much of the solid as possible, then use the warm water and spray and blot. Continue this until the area is clean. For any remaining stains always get the effected area spot-cleaned by a professional.

5. Trimmings How to give your home the edge in 2016 I don’t believe that homes need to be perfect but I do think the old saying ‘the devil is in the detail’ is worth listening to. I love to add a pretty trimming to the bottom of blinds and cushions or use a beautifully embellished tieback on a simple curtain. You can also have a strip of fabric on the leading edge of a pair of curtains – even if you use a completely plain fabric – just having that contrast can make all the difference. There are some beautiful trimmings available, both new and vintage, which can enliven an old cushion or blanket. Most fabric companies have gorgeous trimmings in co-ordinated colours so you can let your imagination run wild ....
Pom pom cushion £58 houseology.com
Sanderson Pom pom tie-backs £90 Salt Interiors
So my best tips for using trimmings are: Cushions – tassels at the corners, beads and
pom poms all the way round Lampshades – fringing round the edge Blankets – bobbles and ribbon on the edges Curtains – ribbon braid on edges, buttons on
the headings Roller blinds- pretty braids and glass beads on
the edges The main thing is to have a bit of fun and know that you now have a bespoke design piece! ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

E’VE BEEN hearing good things (very good things) about 42 King Street ever since it opened, and have been looking forward to trying it for ourselves for some time now. No prizes for guessing where you’ll find this wonderful cocktail and world tapas restaurant, but what may take you by surprise is the warm welcome you’ll receive as soon as you step through the door. It’s a lovely, truly intimate space. It’s not the biggest restaurant in the city by any stretch of the imagination, but that’s the secret of its appeal – you feel as though you already know everyone, and that they're more than happy to see you. It was a particularly chilly evening, but the enthusiasm of front-of-house manager Dominic soon warmed us up as he prepared a couple of cocktails for us. There were 13 to choose from (and more available on request) but we confidently left the choice to Dominic,
who thought we’d appreciate a Manzana – a sharp and tangy blend of Beefeater gin, green apple liqueur and St. Germain elderflower liqueur – and a Gin and Earl Grey Iced Tea, which disguised a hefty kick thanks to a refreshing mix of flavours, including apricots and peaches. Given the choice of food, we were fortunate in having a very helpful waitress who recommended a number of choices that would suit both myself (the vegetarian) and my friend (the carnivore) – and her suggestions were perfect. The brilliant thing about tapas is that it’s a great way of mixing your food with your socialising. We were advised that you should aim for 4-5 dishes per couple, which means you can eat as much (or as little) as you like, and it’s a lot of fun sharing and trying things your friends have ordered. My two vegetarian dishes were a mushroom, thyme and blue cheese bruschetta and a bowl of garlic and coriander hummus with chargrilled bread, mixed vegetables and halloumi. My friend, meanwhile, ordered the braised rib of beef with herb mash and onion gravy, and the roast chicken and chorizo with a chilli and herb butter. O n arrival, the food was beautifully

presented and it was very clear it had been prepared with a lot of care.
M
Y MUSHROOM bruschetta was rich and creamy (and the herbs gave it plenty of flavour), while the hummus was wonderful – containing just the right amount of garlic. Although I couldn’t try my friend’s dishes, I could certainly appreciate the fact that they looked very appetising, and I relied on her to tell me that the beef was extremely tender and the onion gravy was the best she’d ever tasted. She really loved the chicken and chorizo, saying that the mild taste of the chicken and the strong spiciness of the chorizo was a brilliant combination.

We spent some time debating whether or not to have a dessert – a debate helped by a glass of Henri de Richemer merlot! – but although they sounded tempting (especially the spiced chocolate and orange brownie with chocolate Sol) it was a temptation we ultimately resisted. We did, however, make sure we booked a return visit to No.42 before we left. Throughout our meal we’d noticed several people popping in with the hope of getting a table, making us doubly glad we’d booked ours in the first place. Verdict: Very comfortable, very tasty, and very Vanilla. REVIEW: NICKY SECKER-BLIGH

By having two kitchens I have two lots of dry and cold stores so we are lucky to always have good stock. One kitchen services the hotel and the other, the “garden room,” is our venue kitchen. I always make sure I have on my shelves self-raising flour, rice wine vinegar, quality dark chocolate, light brown sugar, golden and green raisins, reduced balsamic, jumbo and Scotts oats, homemade marmalade and of course slabs of homemade chocolate brownie! Smoked paprika and Coleman’s mustard are also a must to make our cheese straws. My luxury item I always keep in stock is white truffle honey, which is very tasty with cheese. What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?
After a long day in between both the hotel and venue kitchens (which could start with breakfast through to late night snacks at the venue), I quite often have something very simple like boiled eggs and soldiers with a large cuppa! Of course with a lovely

What type of cooking do you enjoy the most?
Norfolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?
Canapés have always been my favourite passion. A small taste sensation in one bite! Looks appetizing to eat and displayed on a simple slate so the food is talking rather than the plate. Also a new trend, ‘bowl food’, which is a smaller version of a dish – a small bowl with a mini fork, so quite fun and easy to eat while standing at an event. What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

I have just recently tasted goat’s cheese with truffle oil. Really delicious! It would go so well with the bread from Norfolk bakers ‘Bread Source’. TRATTONS is probably one of the most unusual, and delightful, places you will visit in Norfolk. Tucked away at the end of an unassuming lane in the heart of Swaffham, this award-winning independent family-run boutique hotel, self-catering apartments, restaurant and cafe deli is a rare find and an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. The exquisitely renovated Victorian hotel offers 14 sumptuous bedrooms. The hip and funky mix of contemporary cool with original features, antiques and art is very romantic – perfect for anyone who wants to sleep in a four-poster, soak in a roll-top bath, or share their room with a mermaid mosaic! But my companion S and I were at Stratton’s to experience fine dining in their a la carte restaurant. Our evening began in the welcoming Villa Lounge, where charming hotel supervisor Amie made us comfortable with drinks – a pint of Heywood’s Golden for S, and
a punchy Ginger Zinger ‘mocktail’ for me – and some rather moreish roasted, salted broad beans. The menu is a clear reflection of Strattons’ philosophy. Their modern British style embraces all that is good from the region, using small local producers to source everything from rare breed pork to Cromer crab, cheese, game and wild berries, plus eggs from the hotel hens, and fruit from its own orchard. Appetites nicely sharpened, we descended to The Rustic restaurant, decorated to reflect the Brecks landscape. The choice of starters was innovative and included such delights as hot cured salmon, beetroot and cashew pate and slow-cooked wild rabbit en croute. S started with a delicious mushroom and thyme soup with home-made bread, that was robust, yet delicately flavoured. I had a twicebaked Binham Blue soufflé, with mixed leaves and a mustard dressing. It was the perfect start to my meal –

T
HE MAIN courses continued the theme of local excellence: roasted Norfolk quail, stuffed with pork, pine nuts and orange; cocoamarinated sea bass, with creamed leeks, boulangère potatoes and spiced port sauce; and pumpkin gnocchi with spinach and sage in a roasted garlic cream. S decided to try the 24-hour slowcooked Scott’s Field belly pork, with mustard mash, broccoli and cauliflower cheese, baby carrots and watercress pesto. It was an inspired choice, the pork incredibly succulent and tender, with perfect crackling. My roasted cod fillet, crispy brown shrimps, gremolata mash and wilted greens was perfectly cooked , the fish not overpowered by any of the other ingredients. It was fresh, delicate and nicely seasoned. We could not resist dessert, and with dishes such as vanilla bread and butter pudding, Greenhoe apple tart tatin and peanut butter ice-cream who could blame us? S selected the cheese plate - an impressive mix of local cheeses such as Binham blue, Smoked Dapple and Baron Bigod, with home-made rustic crackers, quince jelly and roasted nuts. For me, it was a selection of petits fours – a mouthwatering line-up of four tempting treats hand made by head chef Julia and her team. We left knowing that we had found something very special indeed!

s we approach the end of the year it’s time to decide on wines for the festive period.
As an aperitif (while opening the presents): Collavini II Grigio, a delightful
sparkling wine from northern Italy, a blend of chardonnay and Glera (the main grape of Prosecco) with the lovely biscuit flavours of champagne and bags of elegance. With Christmas dinner, either (or both!):

Domaine Gerovassiliou, the fantastic Greek viognier I wrote about in the summer edition of Vanilla that has since gone on to win gold medals. Block 12 Lone Gum, a stunning pinot noir from Saint Clair in Marlborough, New Zealand. Saint Clair is one of the top 100 wineries in the world for a reason: quality, structure, beautiful berry fruits. It’s the perfect food match for turkey and the trimmings. And for 2016?: For value and quality look out for the wonderful Portuguese wines. I was lucky enough to visit Agricola Santo Isidro de Pegões this year – fascinating to see wine made in large quantities, but bursting with flavour style and finesse. Happy drinking in 2016!

Toss the pan for a few seconds then add your cider, cover and bring to the boil.

O HUNGRY GOLFERS, clubhouses on courses around the world are known affectionately as ‘the 19th Hole’. Zest at Sprowston Manor Golf Club, four miles north of Norwich, sits more than comfortably in this category but, newly refurbished, it now offers an extensive menu that is intended to appeal not only to players but to everyone. The welcoming bar is stylish and features Starbucks coffee to attract people from their early morning commute and throughout the day. Manager Harry showed fabulous service skills, offering us an aperitif and suggesting we sat where we liked. Sylvaine had an extra dry prosecco Fantinel and I a pinot grigio rosé. We opted for a table with a glorious view across the putting green to the hotel’s magnificent gardens. The menu really does cater for all, from an all-day breakfast to
88
glorious sea bass, local homemade Woodforde’s steak and ale pudding, pasta or good old fish and chips. Immediate dilemma: too much choice. To begin, as it’s not a traditional ‘three-course’ kind of menu, I had hummus with pitta, carrots and celery – always a winner – while Syl opted for crispy squid with chilli jam. Both very good. Portions are generous. I probably should have starved for a fortnight before going, but, like a fool, after leaping at BBQ baby back ribs with salad leaves slaw and fries, I added a side of onion rings – not needed (unless you’re a hungry golfer apparently!). Syl showed more sense, ordering sophisticated grilled sea bass with sweet chilli stirfried vegetables and noodles. We accompanied our main courses with a delicious Chilean sauvignon blanc.
We paused before pudding to savour the wonderful autumnal view. It was dusk now and Zest began to buzz with those hungry golfers, families and all sorts of other folk. A big plus is that during the Summer they serve food until 10pm. Pudding was ice cream for me and sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream for Syl. A good STP always comes with a ‘wow’ factor this didn’t disappoint. We were now well and truly full up, too full for another thing, even coffee. For real value this is most definitely a place to take the family: great atmosphere, super staff, and a menu with wonderful variety. REVIEW: THERESA EAGLE

Ben Langley aka Muddles, Theatre Royal Norwich
My City Life Ben Langley is returning to the cast of the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime Snow White playing Muddles in the festive family spectacular which runs from December 15 to January 17. Based in South Norfolk, he can’t wait to be part of the show and spend the festive season in Norwich.
What is it like being part of the Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime? It’s an exciting and wonderful experience. The Theatre Royal produces this show by themselves which we call an ‘in-house production’ and because of that everybody is terribly proud of it. All the staff are friendly and approachable and truly enjoy the absolute mayhem our family audiences bring twice daily to the theatre; this reverberates throughout giving it a happy and fun show. Without giving too much away, tell us a little bit about Muddles and how he fits into the story. Muddles is Snow White’s quirky and cute friend who is easily confused by the simplest of things. His Mum, Nurse Dorothy Dumpling (played by Richard Gauntlett) is his guide and chief carer: what could possibly go right?
What are the highlights of a Norwich Christmas for you? Norwich is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK for Christmas, so taking in the ambience while out shopping is a great thing to do. As a freelance ‘performing sillyman’, one almost never gets the chance to do pantomime at home so the biggest highlight is the opportunity to be with my family consistently throughout the run.
We know you are based in South Norfolk. What do you like about this part of the world? Norfolk is full of quaint villages and towns, the people are kind and the access into the city from all around is a real asset. I spent this summer performing in The Cromer Seaside Special Variety Show which enabled my wife and I with our two small children to enjoy the coast: the beaches of Cromer, Sea-Palling and Winterton, to take in the charms of Wells-next-the-Sea or the delights of the North Norfolk Railway from Sheringham. My wife is a Norfolk beauty and we both love raising a family in this great county. And finally the two questions we ask everybody. The first is what is your hidden gem in the city? Pottergate. It’s a pleasant reminder of how the city used to be. Wondering round the lanes and nipping in and out of those tiny shops loses you track of time and at Christmas it feels all so very Dickensian. Secondly, where is your favourite place to eat out? I have a very high metabolism so I eat anywhere that can give me a good substantial food fix: Wagamamas on Chapelfield Plain, Pizza Express at The Forum or a cheeky Christmas lunch (with all the trimmings) at Kemp’s Restaurant at the Theatre Royal (I ate there last year... a lot!)
