MANY HAPPY RETURNS TO... HAPPINESS STORE

Woodbridge

WE’RE SWITCHED ON!

With the town’s Christmas lights already on, the next exciting event for your diaries will be the Christmas Market from 10am Friday 11th until 4pm Sunday 13 December, which takes place in the Princes Street, Giles Square, Buttermarket and Queen Street areas in the town centre. There will be a selection of over 50 stalls with a variety of entertainment including local music groups. Check out late night shopping info on allaboutipswich.com.

TREE TIME! Choosing the right

Christmas tree is a fun event and all part of the big Christmas build-up. Buying a locally grown tree is not only good for the local economy but also will be fresher than an imported tree, one that will hold its needles until the new year. Top tip: Do not stand your tree in front of a radiator!

● Suffolk-grown Christmas trees are arriving at Bourne Garden Centre on the 25th November. Pre-ordering and local deliveries are available.

DISTRAXION SALON

Ipswich

...are TEN YEARS OLD this month. Congratulations to Damien and his loyal team. They started out as D-Salon in 2005 and became Distraxion a few years later. A great favourite with Vanilla readers – you get great value for money and a personal service second to none. Happy Birthday!

Community spirit is alive and well and sporting men’s underpants in the Suffolk village of Bredfield, which is aiming to raise thousands for Macmillan Cancer with the Men in Pants 2016 Calendar. The black and white calendar, beautifully shot by local photographer Glyn Collins, features 24 men from the village going about their usual business wearing just their pants! Calendar pin ups include Andy Barker, landlord of the village pub, The Castle Inn, and villager, Sir Nick Young, former CEO of The Red Cross and Macmillan Cancer. While Andy is playing snooker, Sir Nicholas is picking pears. ● The calendar costs £10 with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support. You can buy copies at the Castle Inn, Bredfield Village Shop or via e-mail: meninpants2016@gmail.com

WELL DONE TO... IMAGE SALON

Ipswich

Image Salon has won two highly prized client experience awards – one from salon software providers Phorest, and the other from the online giant Wahanda. The two awards underline the salon’s commitment to consistently provide excellent service for their clients. For Sue Carter and her team these new awards are the most important they have received to date because they were awarded as a direct result from client feedback – so a huge thank you from Image to all their clients!

Angela Hardman, owner of Berridges talks about the allure of unusual coloured stone jewellery

A

T BERRIDGES we are constantly striving to offer our customers items that are not generally available on the high street and that give the wearer a definite ‘wow’ factor. We believe that in our new supplier, Richard Hans Becker, we have not only found superb designs that are comfortable to wear but also some quite unique gemstones. Morganite is a very rare gemstone that was only discovered in the 1950s, and is a member of the Beryl gemstone family, whose other members include Emerald and Aquamarine. It is a beautiful peach colour, and when set in rose gold it looks quite stunning. As always, quality is important and these stones are at the vibrant end of the spectrum, originating from Madagascar. Aquamarine is always a Morganite and diamonds in 18ct gold rings from £2250 pendant £2000 Earrings £3000

favourite either set with or without diamonds. Again, quality is important as paler stones lack intensity and that much prized ocean blue colour. Our stones originate from Brazil where the finest specimens are found. Tanzanite is another relatively new stone, first discovered in 1967. It is a truly unique stone as it is only sourced in one geographical area of Tanzania. Its colours range from ultramarine blue to violet blue, with the best having hints of purple. Our friends at Richard Hans Becker work in Idar-Oberstein, Germany – considered to be the worldwide centre of fine gemstone cutting. Their craftsmen incorporate the rare stones into stunning pieces of jewellery, either from their own inspiration or to their

customer’s wishes. All these stones will certainly create a talking point and I am sure will bring you years of pleasure. Here is just a taste of what we can offer, with prices from £1400. When you are next passing by, drop in and take a look and why not treat yourself to coffee or lunch in our upstairs restaurant afterwards? ■ Berridges can be found at: 4 Dial Lane, Ipswich IP1 1DL. “Now I know I have support to ensure we end our marriage with fair financial settlements”

Agreeing a fair deal on separation OUR PROBLEM: My husband, Mike, and I had been married for ten years when he dropped the bombshell that he was unhappy and wanted to divorce. We’d both worked throughout our marriage but kept our finances fairly separate. Mike paid the majority of the bills and I paid what I could. Now we were separating, I knew we’d need to work out how our assets would be split and there would be lots of paperwork to sort through. A fleeting glimpse of some papers Mike had left lying around, however, made me think he might not be completely open about his own financial position and, having read about two recent cases where the husbands had not been honest about how much they were really worth, I knew it could be a problem. SAM, FELIXSTOWE

48

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: Mike and I had always been open about our finances – what we earned, what we were saving and what we were spending. Or at least, that’s what I thought. But one day, as I was leaving the house, I glanced at a statement on the dining table that made me think otherwise. I was late for work so I thought I’d take a better look when I got home, but when I returned, it was gone. I thought about going through Mike’s paperwork – we were still living in the same house and it would be easy to get into his filing cabinet to take a look, but something told me I ought to seek advice first. Vanilla December 2015/January 2016

REAL LIVES

I’d been looking into which solicitors I might use for the divorce, and a friend had told me that the family team at Barker Gotelee was especially friendly and understanding. I didn’t want to use the solicitors in the town centre, as I suspected people I knew would see me and wonder what was happening. So, I gave Barker Gotelee a call and set up an appointment with Amanda Erskine in their family team.

S

ITTING DOWN and telling Amanda of my situation was such a relief and when I got to the end of the story, she immediately told me I’d done the right thing. She explained that, even if I’d had free access to Mike’s paperwork while we were happily married, from the moment separation was mentioned, actively seeking out his private paperwork was not a good idea. Whether this was the financial paperwork in Mike’s filing cabinet, emails or digital files, or even things I’d read in his private social media messages, anything that I had obtained without his permission could not be kept and would have to be returned to Mike immediately. Having taken the papers could have made things much worse in terms of us cooperating with each other to sort out our financial settlement. I have to admit that this made me upset, as I was sure the document I’d seen had quantities of money in it that I never knew existed. It made me think Mike had been planning an exit from our marriage for some time. I’d also read about

the recent Supreme Court cases of Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil, whose husbands had both been dishonest with their finances and their divorce settlements had been reopened for review. Going through separation and thinking about divorce proceedings was distressing enough as it was. I certainly didn’t like the idea of having to dispute things well into the future – for both of our sakes. Amanda reassured me that hiding assets is an incredibly hard thing to do and that, as experienced family solicitors, the team at Barker Gotelee knew exactly how to follow the paper trails to discover any missing financial information. Having discussed my situation

with Amanda, I realised it was for the best to end the situation I was in sooner rather than later. So I asked her to start the paperwork for divorce proceedings.

O

VER THE NEXT few weeks Amanda drew up the paperwork and filed the forms needed to start the divorce action, keeping me updated at every stage. Now Mike and I are going through full financial disclosure with our respective solicitors and I know that, whether Mike puts forward all his assets to start with or not, Amanda and the team at Barker Gotelee are there to help ensure we end our marriage with fair financial settlements and as amicably as possible. ■

We’re here to help We all need legal services from time to time. Whether you need advice or assistance relating to divorce, or for any other family law matter, our specialists, including Amanda Erskine and Josie Hayes, are on hand to help.

The Saints area of Ipswich comprises of St Peters and St Nicholas Streets, and forms a natural link from the Town Centre to the Waterfront. Steeped in history and home to our best independent businesses, shops and eateries, it’s a must-visit destination...

NEW YEAR BREAK AWAYS

ON THE MAP!

Look out for a great little brochure and map on the area, available from Ipswich Central. Great for visitors and Ipswich residents alike - pick one up at Tourist Information.

Facing months of cement grey skies and damp winter weather makes us dream of escape. We spoke to Andrea Powell from Idelho Travel who told us where local people are jetting off to, but if you think it’s all beaches and sun you’ll be surprised.“The Christmas Hot Spot is actually Iceland, with its New Year firework displays. It is also a great time to see the Northern Lights.” Also popular: the Canaries with only a 4 hour flight and Cape Town, because “England will be playing the Second Test there and people go out earlier for New Year.” Other destinations include New York and in 2016 all eyes will be on Rio. Where are you going Andrea? “Hunstanton with my husband and dogs!”

25 YEARS ON THE STREET

BAISS & CO hair and beauty celebrated their 25 year anniversary this year. MD Simon Blowers balances the new – “a passion for change and creativity” and the old – a location he loves because of its “period look and quaintness.” The anniversary culminates in ‘The House of Baiss’, a visual media production with choreography, dance, hair and fashion taking place at the St Nicholas Centre, November 21st.

50

HOW DID WE GET ON? The growing reputation of The Saints saw it shortlisted in this year’s Great British High Street Competition which celebrates the efforts of the people working hard to maintain their vibrancy. The Saints made it into the top five for the entry category, ‘local centre’. Sadly they didn’t make the top three but being short-listed is a strong endorsement of the great work The Saints has put in over the last few years to create a vibrant community of indie businesses. Going forward, this endorsement has provided traders with some great promo opportunities and wider publicity for the area and the town. Ipswich has suffered a lot of negative press in recent years, especially for its retail, so hopefully this gives us some momentum to redress this going forward.

Vanilla December 2015/January 2016

THE SAINTS

Saints interesting fact #4 St Peter’s Church was taken over by Cardinal Wolsey to become his College chapel and the parishioners had to either go to the neighbouring St. Nicholas’ or St. Mary Quay. Wolsey ordered several improvements to St. Peter’s but when he fell from grace the parishioners got their church back in 1537.

C

HRISTMAS SHOPPING can be fun if you come to the Christmas Shopping Night in The Saints. Taking place on December 10th until 8pm, local traders will be offering a warm welcome to shoppers and families in this atmospheric part of Ipswich – a lovely place to enjoy the mulled wine and mince pies on offer, take part in the charity raffle with prizes from local businesses and keep a seasonal glow in your cheeks. The Saints is easily accessible from the town centre and is perfect for after work shopping and a drink or meal later on in one of its many bars and restaurants. There’s nearby car parking too, some of it free. Cathy Frost from LoveOne has co-ordinated the event, she told Vanilla: “The Christmas Shopping Night is a team effort. I love the

sense of community we have and hearing positive comments about the area make all the effort worth it. Events like this are really important to raise our profile and showcase what is so great about The Saints. It is more than a collection of shops, it’s a destination offering great service,

ITH INCREASING emphasis on maintaining a youthful appearance, there seems to be a never-ending demand for safe, yet effective treatments that offer minimal discomfort or downtime. Skin tightening with radiofrequency seems to be the new, big thing in the aesthetics business so Vanilla went along to try it out at Suffolk Medical and Beauty Clinic in Boxford, Sudbury.

giving a gradual and natural improvement to fine lines, wrinkles and scars. THE TREATMENT

At the clinic, I was greeted by owners Dr. Anthony O’Neill and his wife Jenny, a Registered General Nurse. After an indepth consultation I was led to one of their treatment rooms. Jenny applied a thin layer of gel to the areas to be treated – my jowls, neck and lower face – then a handpiece delivering a radiofrequency current was moved in a circular motion to heat the skin. The desired skin temperature is reached quickly and then maintained for 2 to 3 minutes. To be honest, it felt as if I was having a warm, gentle massage. Typically each treatment session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. The gel is then removed and specialist skin products applied. During treatment, the temperature of the skin is monitored as the handpiece is moved over the area. Your skin does get warm but as the handpiece is moved rapidly back and forth I found that it never got too hot.

REVITALISED SPA IS FLAWLESS Vanilla visits the new beauty rooms at Seckford

HE CHRISTMAS season can leave us feeling frazzled and it’s easy to neglect ourselves. A visit to Seckford Spa might just be the thing you need to help you cope and look your most glamorous when, quite frankly, all you feel like doing is collapsing onto the sofa with a boxset. The recent refurbishment of Seckford Spa at Seckford Hall hotel was accomplished under the direction of Sarah Gregory, owner of Flawless Image Beauty salon in Ipswich. Sarah now oversees the treatments which take place in the new, serene double treatment rooms, set in beautiful grounds a world away from the stresses of everyday life. “Seckford Hall hotel is such a stunning place to visit,” said Sarah. “I feel that as you turn the corner into the drive of the

56

magnificent building, you cannot fail to enjoy its surroundings and history.” The sympathetic renovation of the hotel and spa has had a positive impact locally: “The hotel and area can only benefit from the new spa, and as a business owner it is exciting to develop the Flawless Image brand with an existing client base and new visitors,” Sarah said, adding that she is enjoying working closely with the hotel on developing and marketing overnight and day spa packages. Both existing and new clients have responded very positively, Sarah commented: “All our clients have been so impressed with the light airy dining space, the renovated pool and Jacuzzi, not to mention the addition of a new sauna and steam room. “The seven treatment spaces

are peaceful and beautifully designed overlooking the pool and clients have commented on the service and quality of treatments. The refurbishment was long awaited and has taken off at great speed,” Sarah added. How can Seckford Spa help us find our party feet (and faces) this Christmas? “We are offering ‘Lets get ready to sparkle’ overnight spa packages to prepare for the festive season” replies Sarah. “For New Year we are planning ‘detox’ for 2016 with treatments to tone and detoxify and a menu to enhance this. Stressed out shoppers can enjoy our Power Breakfast facial or Vespers 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage, to restore equilibrium.” For more details on the treatments available go to www.flawlessimage.co

BATH, BODY, BLISS…

If you love beauty, you’ll just love ChéZoë Spa Collection…

AVING RECENTLY relocated to Stonham Barns, times couldn’t be more exciting for ChéZoë Spa Collection. “We wanted to create something new and exciting for our customers, so myself and Kittys Jules decided to open our shops under one roof to create a unique shopping experience,” says ChéZoë owner Karien Breedt. “Essential oils from Africa that you will never have seen or tried before and stylish Italian clothing, what could be a better?” And we couldn’t agree more. Karien’s array of beauty products is not something you’ll find on other shop shelves; Roobios and Honey infused Massage Oil, silky-soft Body Butters made out of luxurious Shea butter (we are obsessed with Litchi and Rose) and Warm Orange and Ginger-scented Kalahari Bath Soak. To say we want one of everything is a mass

58

understatement. With Christmas round the corner and mounting todo lists, this range is ideal for now as the essential oils get to work immediately on your mind, body and soul for a truly multi-sensual experience. “We all live extremely busy lifestyles – my mission is to give people the opportunity to create an affordable spa-like experience in the comfort of their own home,” explains Karien. And it won’t only be your skin that feels good, thanks to the eco and charitable benefits of ChéZoë. With a reward scheme for recycling re-usable ChéZoë packaging, you can refill old packaging with a 10% discount. The range also sources ingredients from South Africa to support rural communities. “This matter is very close to my heart. I chose to work with Matsimela, an African company, as they endeavour to source ingredients

through rural communities and they have a strong commitment to make South Africa a better place for all. Plus, you won’t find a single product that contains ingredients tested on animals. “Being a strong belief of mine, I will continue to source products that are free from animal testing.” Premium beauty products and luxurious Italian clothing all under one roof, what more of a reason do you need to make a visit to Karien and Kittys Jules in their new homes at Stonham Barns? The ultimate venue for Christmas shopping, there are even more surprises in store. “We have amazing hampers and gifts available for Christmas, definitely gifting with a difference.” See you in the queue… REVIEW: ALICE MANNING

Lava Shell Massage at Eden Beauty House

E

DEN BEAUTY HOUSE based at Westerfield Business Centre had only been open a few weeks when I arrived for my Lava Shell Massage. Parking was easy and free, which made me feel happy and relaxed before the treatment had even started, hassle free! Michelle Henry, the owner of Eden Beauty House, welcomed me with a big smile and was eager to show me her new salon. It was small but perfectly formed, contemporary but not lacking in warmth. The light, calming space immediately made me feel relaxed and eager to get on with the treatment. I was intrigued to find out more about the benefits of Lava Shell massage, so Michelle was happy to talk me through the treatment. Lava Shells are the world’s first self-heating massage tool. A patented, natural, biodegradable heat technology is incorporated into the Lava Shell which then

60

emits heat for over an hour, allowing therapists to provide a continuous and seamless body massage. Due to the Lava Shell’s unique shape and angles they become an extension of the therapist’s hands, deploying deeply therapeutic relief where it is needed. Michelle explained the shells come from villages in the Philippines where the tiger-stripped clamshell is part of the daily diet. These shells used to be thrown away but are now recycled for Lava Shell massage. A teabag like sachet is placed inside each shell. This is the ‘LavaGel’ (a mix including algae and sea kelp) which, when combined with salt water, generates enough heat for the luxurious massage. The heat from the shells gently relaxs and smooths away tension and knots, boosting circulation, soothing aches and pains, reducing swelling and water retention

and leaving you feeling deeply relaxed. Sounds good to me! Michelle made me comfortable on the treatment couch, to be honest I didn’t know what to expect. What I didn’t anticipate was the heat of the shells. They were first pressed into my palms and they were hot! Michelle said they had to be this hot to penetrate the muscles of the body. She used both hands and the shells, working down my neck and back. The heat allows you to go much deeper which is a great stress reliever and extremely relaxing, I was in massage heaven and didn’t want the treatment to end! The combination of heat and a very good massage delivers the goods. The treatment lasted an hour and I felt a wonderful combination of refreshed and relaxed. I didn’t want to get off the couch! I will definitely recommend this treatment to friends and family and will be back for more! n LAVA SHELL MASSAGE AT EDEN BEAUTY HOUSE Full Body Lava Shell Massage, £48. Back Massage,£33. WELLBEING

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!

January is traditionally the month in which the machinery of your life should be given a complete overhaul. Here’s a little help from Vanilla...

TOP 10 TIPS

TO ACHIEVING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

1. Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

2. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve.

3. Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment.

4. Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead think about what you really want out of life. 5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based.

6. Tell your friends and family about your goals. You’re more likely to get support and want to avoid failure. 7. Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim.

8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress.

9. Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a computer spreadsheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures.

10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether. www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Healthychristmas/NewYearresolutions

What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural, relaxed state of altered awareness, that all of us have experienced at some time before. An example of this is when you may have been driving and not been able to recall part of the journey. Or day dreaming. You are just deeply relaxed, but awake and in control at all times. It is a pleasant, relaxing and tranquil experience and you will be able to recall everything that happens afterwards. How can it help? Great results have been experienced

by those seeking help with giving up smoking, weightloss, depression, anxiety and phobias. If you’ve been struggling with any of these issues then it could be hypnotherapy will help you achieve your goals once and for all... www.anitahughes.co.uk Vanilla December 2015/January 2016

Micro Needling

VanillaT REPOR

PHOTOGRAPHY: SYLVAINE POITAU

We take a look at the new DermapenTM at Radiant Beauty

Is micro needling therapy the secret to a more flawless, younger-looking complexion? Alice Manning reports on the latest innovation in skin rejuvenation… WHAT IS IT?

You may be familiar with Botox, fillers and chemical peels but there is an innovative new treatment that you need to know about. Micro needling therapy, also known as skin needling, has been stepped up a gear thanks to the invention of DermapenTM. The vibrating hand-held device contains 12 micro-needles which range from less than 0.5 - 2.5mm to carefully puncture the epidermis of the skin with 1300 micro-injections per second. Why? To trick the body into healing itself and stimulate the production of anti-ageing

64

collagen and elastin. The awardwinning DermapenTM allows the practitioner to treat a long list of skin concerns including sun damage and scarring and is easy to manoeuvre around facial and body contours, including traditionally hard-toreach areas such as around the nose. A huge step on from its predecessor, Dermaroller, results are achieved more quickly and with less downtime and trauma to the skin. Dr Kathy Walker, who operates from her practice Radiant Beauty in Woodbridge, is a huge fan of the treatment. “The DermapenTM allows me to

control the depth and speed of the needles depending on the client I am treating,” she says. “Sterile, one-use needles work on the epidermis of the skin for amazing results with only oneto-two day’s downtime.” You’ll notice an immediate difference to the texture and tone of your skin and the procedure will continue over time for long-term benefits as well. WHY DO IT?

Unless you are superhuman chances are you are a sufferer of either fine lines, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, scarring, stretch marks,

Dermapen claims to be more controlled and less destructive than Dermaroller

pigmentation or if you’re really unlucky all of the above. Plus, using the device on a deeper setting works on the body for larger areas of concern like postpregnancy stretch marks. If you are busy and don’t have the time for procedures with a lengthy recovery time then this is the treatment for you.

A course of Dermapen achieves exceptionally good results, especially with acne scarring, enlarged pores and ageing skin

even complexion opt for the latter. “The most uncomfortable area to treat is the forehead as there is less underlying fat to act as ‘padding’, so I always start here and then move on to less sensitive areas – it’s complete in a matter of minutes,” explains Dr Kathy. “I work in three directions,

IS IT PAINFUL?

A topical anaesthetic cream can be applied before any needles touch the surface of the skin but most people tolerate the procedure without the need for numbing cream. “I always complete the treatment with cold compresses, an antiinflammatory vitamin repair lotion which I massage in and finally a recovery cream,’ says Dr Kathy.

vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and can treat a whole face within 20 minutes.” 3 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE HOPPING IN DR KATHY’S CHAIR… l Expect a course of treatments three-to-six weeks apart depending on the area and complaint. l Always avoid sun exposure after your treatment as your skin will be more sensitive and prone to burning. l There’s a small risk of infection if you apply make-up straight after your treatment, so book an end of day appointment, go straight home and leave your skin alone. Treatments start from £75. For more information contact Dr Kathy Walker at Radiant Beauty, 6 North Hill, Woodbridge IP12 1HH

WHAT’S THE PROCESS?

Once your skin has been cleansed, Dr Kathy applies either a Hyaluronic acid gel or a vitamin C serum. Which one depends on your desired results; if you want plumper, younger-looking skin go for the former (it’s the substance filler is made of), or if you want a brighter, more

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Carter and the team at Image

IS IT OK TO STORE SPF PRODUCTS IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT OF THE CAR? No, especially during summer. Once the car heats up in the sun, high temperatures can cause the sunscreen’s active ingredients to degrade and products such as lip balm will melt. When you apply a degraded sunscreen or a product which contains degraded sunscreen such as lip balm or hand cream to your skin, you’re not getting the SPF protection that’s indicated on the bottle. In fact, you might be applying nothing more than a thick moisturiser which has little to no SPF. HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT BRONZER? The key is to find a colour that’s two or three shades deeper than your natural tone. Fair skin looks best in peachy hues, which add a bit of warmth. For olive skin, pick a shade that’s more beige than brown, and for darker skin look for a rich bronze with an orange or apricot undertone. Apply the bronzer using a dense, fluffy powder blush with a light pressure, along the hairline, the bridge of your nose, and the sides of your cheeks. If you darken the whole face, you’ll create a muddy shadow, and you want to create an illusion of colour where the sun would naturally bronze your face.

66

ANY TIPS ON HOW TO SHOW OFF MY DÉCOLLETÉ THIS PARTY SEASON? Begin by preparing the skin – exfoliate the area with a moisturising body scrub, this will help to get rid of any loose, dead skin cells (which may cause the area to look dehydrated) and reveal fresh glowing skin. To enhance cleavage, apply a shimmery lotion from the clavicle down, followed by a dab of cream highlighter over the top of the breasts. This creates an illusion of lifted pert breasts. Finish with a dusting of bronzing powder in the centre of your chest. Apply all the layers softly and blend them using a big fluffy brush similar to the one you would use for your bronzer. HOW CAN I DO A QUICK AND EASY SMOKY EYE? There are different types of smoky eyes. The ones that fade light to dark are probably the most difficult to achieve. If you are a beginner in smoky eyes, using a single base colour is the best way to start. A smoky eye can be achieved with any colour range so pick a solid dark colour and cover your entire lid. Next, pick a light beige or cream tone and place it right under the brow line. Last, you will need a shade of brown or beige that is one or two tones darker than your skin colour. Place this between the brow colour and the lid colour directly under the brow bone, this will allow for an awesome contoured look. Finally, take your favorite blending brush and blend until you cannot tell when one colour starts and the other one ends. You will have a fabulous smoky eye within minutes. n

Give your hair some

SEASONAL SPARKLE... With the holidays fast approaching, the team at Francesco Hair Salon have these golden rules for good hair care… WASH YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY

Washing your hair on a regular basis removes dead skin cells from the scalp, promoting healthy growth while rehydrating and strengthening your hair. We encourage our clients to wash their hair daily if at all possible! USE LESS SHAMPOO

Almost everyone uses too much shampoo and overdoing it will cause your hair to look dull. Use 20p coin sized amount for for shorter hair, while longer hair will need a 50p-sized amount. SHAMPOO THE SCALP ONLY

It's not just how much shampoo you use, but where you apply it that counts. Apply shampoo to the scalp only, not the ends of your hair. The lather will naturally rinse down so your hair will be cleansed without the need to scrub. AVOID HOT WATER

Hot water can be damaging to hair, plus it will strip down tone from coloured hair. Try to keep the water as cool as possible. TOWEL-DRY BEFORE CONDITIONING

Hair that’s saturated with water doesn’t have room to absorb anything else. By removing excess water from the hair before conditioning you will notice healthier looking glossy hair. WAIT BEFORE BLOW-DRYING TAKE CARE OF WET HAIR

Your hair is most fragile and more susceptible to breakage when it is wet. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair rather than a brush, which can stretch and break the hair. Avoid cheap plastic combs which can cut into your hair. December 2015/January 2016 Vanilla

Allow your hair at least 10 minutes to dry under a towel before blow-drying. Apply a heat protection spray to cut down on heat exposure, which is very damaging to hair. Avoid the highest heat setting on your hairdryer, your hair will thank you in the long run!

Your Christmas Carpet Survival Guide Here is your handy cut-out-and-keep guide to make sure your carpets survive Christmas!

1

What’s to be done when Santa arrives at your home and the inevitable HOT EMBERS AND ASH are left on your carpet from the chimney? A wool hearth mat will keep embers from burning your carpet. Cool ashes are best picked out with the vacuum cleaner. We always suggest a suction cleaner, especially on wool carpets. A beater bar can be used on heavily soiled man-made carpets.

2

So the elves are relaxing after preparing for the Big Day and have spilt a full GLASS OF RED WINE on the cream living room carpet. Firstly, do not panic, all is not ruined. All you

need is warm water in a spray bottle and a roll of plain white kitchen roll. Blot as much of the red wine up as you can, use fresh sheets of kitchen roll, this will pull the liquid from the pile. Spray the warm water on the effected area. Continue to blot until the wine is mopped out – with red wine it is important to do this as quickly as possible. Remember this may not remove the stain entirely, if this is the case PLEASE DO NOT USE CHEMICAL CLEANERS.

These cause more problems than they solve. If in doubt, call in professional cleaning company... we can recommend one to you.

3

We know that little children and pets can get very excited at Christmas. We have heard that Rudolph is the worse! So if you have an accident with SOLID MESS you’ll need an old spatula, kitchen roll and warm water in a spray bottle. Scrape up as much of the solid as possible, then use the warm water and spray and blot. Continue this until the area is clean. For any remaining stains always get the effected area spot-cleaned by a professional. For more advice and tips: call 01394 386684, email info@archwaycarpets.co.uk, or pay us a visit at the shop in Church Street, Woodbridge.

HOME BLOG BY JULIA NELSON-ELGAR INTERIOR DESIGNER AT NELSON DESIGN UK

The art of simplicity... AT THE TIME of writing this there were only 7 more Mondays until Christmas. It was enough to strike fear and trepidation into the hearts of many of us. However, I took it as an opportunity to get my act together. Keep it simple. How many of us pour over Pinterest images of a single branch in a vase? I have a whole board titled Christmas! I love to keep decorations simple. A church candle on a plate surrounded by glass baubles or a bowl of oranges with a sprig of holly can create a simple but striking display. I love creating vignettes of treasured decorations and new acquisitions. Take a walk to look for pine cones, holly and, of course, that all important perfect branch. But please keep it simple. Be organised. I know exactly where all my Christmas decorations are. I have them all consolidated into one large hallowed box of love. I am a stickler for tradition,

which also means I don’t change my colour scheme. I cannot recommend this enough! With my family heritage being Swedish and growing up the Midwest of America, I do stick to a red, white and green theme. If you prefer, stick to white, with gold, or silver or red. A theme is so important. It will keep you focused if you feel the need to purchase a couple of annual decorations, but it will save you time and money in the long run. Plan, plan, plan. Quite often I am racing around

getting client’s houses ready for Christmas so therefore I have to have things ready for me. I plan a baking day the first Saturday/Sunday of December. It is another tradition even it is only me baking! It gives me time to think about holiday menus as well. We put our tree up 1 to 2 weeks maximum before the Big Day. If I put it up any earlier, I find everything looks so tired (including me!) by Christmas! I put a time limit on myself and what is not done by 3pm on Christmas Eve ain’t worth doing!! Please don’t think my house is perfect at Christmas. I can assure you, it isn’t. I remind myself every year Christmas is only one day. Your loved ones are what makes this one day special. Please enjoy them and don’t worry if the branch isn’t perfect! So please, keep it simple. ■

TIME TO TALK TURKEY

Turnbull Turkeys offer a wide range of prime, farm fresh table poultry reared in the heart of the Suffolk countryside at Gosbeck. The turkeys have space, fresh air and sunlight and are fed on home-produced food with no artificial growth promoters or GM crops involved and fattening takes at least 22 weeks which all ensures the best possible flavour and texture. Order your Christmas bird online today at www.turnbullturkeys.co.uk or call 01473 890210. Collection is on 23rd & 24th December. HOW TO COOK YOUR BIRD Follow these simple steps from butcher, Gerard King, of Salter & King at Aldeburgh, and you won’t go wrong with your bird.

● Weigh your turkey after stuffing and leave bird to come up to room temperature.

● More than 4kg weight? Cook for 20 minutes per kg and add 90 minutes at the end.

● Cover the breast with strips of bacon or smear with softened butter then cover loosely with foil.

● Remove the foil for the last 40 minutes so the top can brown.

● Preheat your oven to 190°C (180°C for fan assisted ovens), 375°F, Gas Mark 5.

● Ovens vary so always test your turkey. Pierce the thickest part with a skewer and check juices run clear.

● Less than 4kg weight? Cook for 20 minutes per kg then add another 70 minutes cooking time at the end.

● Allow to stand for 15-20 minutes in a warm place – it won’t go cold and will be easier to carve.

Our friends at East Of England Co-op have put together a lovely selection of Sourced Locally treats for one lucky Vanilla reader to win this Christmas The East of England Co-op started their Sourced Locally initiative back in 2007. They started out simply selling locally grown asparagus, and now stock well over 2,400 different products from 140 suppliers across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex: everything from beer, bread and bacon to honey and haddock. Co-op customers are also increasingly buying local, with a 31% increase in Sourced Locally sales and a £12m turnover in the last financial year. This means that since the scheme launched, they’ve ploughed more than £25 million back into the regional economy and supported the creation of around 400 new jobs in the region. Here’s your chance to win a lovely selection of our favourite Sourced Locallyproduce – just email your entry to us today and you might win this lovely bumper hamper!

F VANILLA DID PRIZES FOR the most perfect meal then Tuddenham Mill would be scooping this year’s gold. It’s little wonder that this beautifully restored watermill, built in 1775 and nestling in the countryside outside Bury St Edmunds, already has a sea of accolades. The passionate Head Chef, Lee Bye, is a deserved winner of the Chef of the Year title in the Suffolk Food and Drink Awards 2015, after a Masterchef style cook-off against Alan Paton from The Crown at Stoke by Nayland and Chris Lee from the Packhorse Inn. Lee has been Tuddenham Mill’s Head Chef for two years and has already earned a 2 AA rosette award and won the prestigious Good Food Guide Editors’ Award 2015 for the best set lunch menu in the UK. This is superb food, wholesome, flavoursome and expertly executed. It is also

exceptionally well-priced, with the set lunch menu for 2 courses at £15.50 and 3 courses at £19.50. A glass of fizz – and gorgeous tiny aperitifs of cubed cauliflower dipped in the lightest batter and fairy-sprinkled with cheese – served in the beautiful bar area overlooking the millpond, with the huge ancient wheel of the watermill taking centre stage behind the bar, sets the scene for a memorable meal. The dining room on the first floor is atmospheric and cosy, with the original 18th century beams criss-crossing the walls. The most beautiful cupcakes of homemade bread rolls arrived warm from the oven, mouth-wateringly savoury with barley malt and accompanied by a slither of yellow Cornish salted butter. Starters on our set menu included a perfect pumpkin soup with mascarpone, chorizo jam and

pumpkin seeds – lush and rich in flavour. Shetland mussels, soothed in London wheat beer, garlic and parsley were plump, soft and oozing in loveliness (with just a perfect proportion of cream). Other tempting starters included St Peter’s beef shin, Jerusalem artichoke, mushroom ketchup and beer pickled onions, or Worlington egg, parsley velouté, kohlrabi slaw and Parmesan. The main course – the Main Event on the menu – is the star. A succulent pink lamb rump shank cooked in honey porter and served with Undley carrots, an exquisite Dauphinoise potato, squash and sea beet was a triumph. The hake fillet, with a gorgeous sauce of Debenham cider and mussel ‘St Jacques’ was served with finely sliced

runner beans and tender purple sprouting broccoli. Also on the menu wild mallard with quince terrine, forono beetroot, parsnip purée and Russian kale or watercress risotto with a fried duck egg, Baron of Bigod and walnuts. Each was artistically presented but with sensiblesized portions, served on hearty artisan earthenware that added a homely, natural feel to

The passion of the creative team in the kitchen shine through everything here comforting but clever food. The desserts are to die for – a childhood favourite of baked apple and rice pudding

reinvented as the muscovado glazed Discovery apple with rice pudding, oats and a lovely fresh lemon thyme sugar, so seasonal and full of memories of cold winter nights. The bitter chocolate textures was an array of mousse, shards and truffles, sharpened up by a black cherry sorbet and hazelnut oil for added Christmassy flavour. Tuddenham Mill has rooms – which look to be as lovely as their food – and gorgeous grounds worthy of a wander after a meal to remember. The star quality of the finest seasonal Suffolk ingredients, the warm friendliness of the waiting team and the passion of the creative chefs in the kitchen shine through everything here. The prizes are so very well deserved. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

CHRISTMAS COCKTAIL HOUR

With Christmas coming up many of us will be worrying about over eating and drinking. The good news: one glass of Prosecco contains around 80 calories – due to its low alcohol content when compared with other wines – this makes it a good choice for dieters and a perfect lunchtime drink. So, drink Prosecco and have a guilt-free Christmas... or make a cocktail and be damned!

Nigella’s Christmas Prosecco Cocktail This prosecco cocktail is great for parties, as it’s hassle free and easy to make – simply pour all the ingredients together into a chilled jug, and there you have it. The ginger ale and cherry brandy make for a sweet and gently spiced cocktail which is perfect for the festive season. 1 chilled bottle of Prosecco 125ml cherry brandy 500ml dry ginger ale

1 Simply add all the ingredients into a chilled jug and gently stir to mix. 2 Divide between 8 to 10 glasses and serve with ice cubes if desired.

Sarah Holmes Chief Executive, New Wolsey Theatre

My East Coast Life

Sarah Holmes grew up in New Zealand and came to the UK in the late 70s. She has been Chief Executive of the New Wolsey Theatre since 2000 and lives in Ipswich with her partner, Artistic Director Peter Rowe.

How did you come about the job of Chief Executive at the New Wolsey Theatre? I’ve been working in and enjoying the UK arts scene since arriving here in 1979, after exploring the world! After a brief stint as a barmaid in London, I started working in Stage Management

for various London companies. In 1982 I joined London Bubble – a company set up to tour the outer boroughs of London with a tent for the auditorium and an ambition to take theatre to audiences other theatres did not reach. In 1986 I took up the post of General Manager at The Theatre Royal Stratford East, followed by a move to the North West where I joined Clwyd Theatre Cymru situated amidst the hills of North Wales. In 2000 myself, Peter, and our family moved to Ipswich and took on the project of re-opening the New Wolsey Theatre, a project which to this day remains as exciting as when we first embarked upon, which is why I’m still here!

What do you like about Ipswich and the Suffolk community? The cultural offer in Ipswich is incredibly vibrant and all encompassing. There is a wealth of different art forms to engage with and enjoy. The unique thing about arts in Suffolk is the diversity on offer and we need to shout it from the roof tops to remind all of us who live here and to attract more visitors from out of county

You must be incredibly proud of the success of the Theatre in recent years? Absolutely, and our plans just get more and more exciting as the years roll on! One of my biggest passions when creating the New Wolsey Theatre was that it became a theatre for all. The programme of shows we bring in and make ourselves is achieving new audiences each year from Ipswich and Suffolk. Every year we do this is a massive achievement, and we’ve embarked on a brand new Arts Council initiative to lead a consortium of UK theatre companies to combine their skills to have a major impact on the development of deaf and disabled artists, audience and participants.

What’s coming up for us that you’re particularly excited about? Possibly the most packed Spring season we’ve ever launched, as well as planning super exciting events for 2016 already in the lead up to our 15th Birthday celebrations.

When you’re not in the theatre where do like to go to relax locally? Suffolk has possibly the best selection of walking trails in the country to reflect and relax. My absolute favourite walk is to circle the Minsmere Reserve – a walk with amazing views of Suffolk! ■
