TREE TIME! Choosing

COES MEANS CHRISTMAS!

We know Christmas is definitely coming when the Coes Christmas window gets unveiled. Last year Find our Christmas openingwon hours on our website | 20–28 Norwich Ipswich | Free customer parking the display team an award forRoad, their windows coes.co.uk and they’re hoping this year to do just as well. The window is covered at the moment as the team work on getting it all put together – it will be launched on 20th November. Coes are rounding off the year with a Christmas campaign – collaborating with creative agency WHAT Associates – which is a celebration of joy; anything and everything that brings joy and makes people happy. The tag line is ‘Sprinkle Joy. A little here. A little there. A little everywhere.’ Well their window displays certainly bring joy to plenty!

the right Christmas tree is a fun event and all part of the big Christmas build-up. Buying a locally grown tree is not only good for the local economy but also will be fresher than an imported tree, one that will hold its needles until the new year. Top tip: Do not stand your tree in front of a radiator!

● Suffolk-grown Christmas trees are arriving at Bourne Garden Centre at the end of November. Pre-ordering and local deliveries are available.

LATE NIGHTS IN WOODBRIDGE 30 NOVEMBER They officially start the yuletide season on 30th of November on the Market Hill in Woodbridge, by turning on the Christmas lights at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome, with live music, food and general festive celebrations on the square. Throughout the day the local shops will be adding Christmas touches to the shopping experience, and starting the festive count down.

newsonthestreet Stop Press... Christmas is coming!

WE’RE SWITCHED ON!

With the town’s Christmas lights going on as we went to press, the next exciting event for your diaries will be the Christmas Market from 10am Friday 8th until 4pm Sunday 10th December, which takes place in the Princes Street, Giles Square, Buttermarket and Queen Street areas in the town centre. Scores of stalls selling yuletide food, drink, decorations and presents will line the streets, as well as a bar, hot food stands and even a funfair for the young and young at heart. www.allaboutipswich.com

WELL DONE TO...

LOCAL COUPLE LAURA DODDS & MATT CARTER

...who are undertaking a charity walk over Christmas to raise money for Shelter and Age UK because this is the time of year when people can feel most alone, vulnerable and with nowhere to turn. Starting in Kemble at the source of the Thames along the 184 miles of pathway, they will be walking each day for 10 hours and covering on average 30 miles a day, to eventually arrive at the Thames Barrier 6 days later on Christmas Day evening. Carrying all their own gear and for the first two days walking over 37 miles a day. This is totally unsupported, just the two of them and having to plan, advertise and sort the logistics themselves (as well as training everyday) is quite a big task (along with both working full time).

FESTIVE WOODBRIDGE WINDOWS

Our local businesses work so very hard behind the scenes at Christmas, just take a look at the effort involved in these Christmas window displays... Jill Barrett at Barretts of Woodbridge: “For our windows, we wanted to create something really eye-catching and different – so when we saw some beautifully decorated mannequins at one of the shows we knew they would be perfect! Debbie in our linens dept was really excited to be given the task of planning how to decorate them and judging by the comments from our customers, they are a roaring success!

Joannah Reynolds at the Happiness Store: “We love the magic of Christmas at the store. We enjoy the planning, talking through different themes and ideas and then bringing them to life in the store. This year we decided to launch our ‘Little Christmas’ in the evening, we even got the red carpet out! The atmosphere was just great, lots of smiling happy faces, perfect...”

Cake & Catwalk Brace yourselves ladies... The cold weather is coming! What a great time to embrace the accessories. It’s a great opportunity to bring out the hat, be bold with style and give your coat or jacket a new lease of life. Get out your coat and shop for a new look. Flash a new shape or colour at it. We had the big blanket scarf last year which gives the oversize chunky look. This year I have been searching for other solutions. In Cake & Catwalk we have Marzipan scarves which have about eight different wearing options. And Lindy Lou knitted scarves with designer hand crafted buttons that bring out a new quality. For a demonstration pop in or have a look on my facebook or website for a tutorial. New hats arriving soon. Get creative girls!!

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

L

ET’S HAVE a bit of fun this Christmas and put aside the continual doom and gloom being fed to us morning and evening for just a little while at least and imagine that traffic diversions, inappropriate behaviour, misguided politics, terrorists and all the other nasties have been cancelled for a while. Let’s think about some of the truly wonderful things that people do every day, from the smallest gestures to the grandest giving. I’m giving myself a lecture here, guilty as charged. Sorry to those of you who’ve heard me grinch, bitch and grumble, but I’m looking forward to the festive season and I’m thanking my lucky stars to be spending it at home with my gorgeous family and friends, with my only concerns being what to buy for everyone and whether it’s turkey or a beef rib for Christmas lunch!

The Market Hill organisers have arranged treasure hunts for the children and I understand there’ll be the odd glass of mulled wine handed out.

N

OW, WHAT should you wear on a night like this? Clearly this is your big opportunity to look gorgeous and proper snugly! I suggest a pair of Ilse Jacobson wellies, brilliantly designed to look like a chunky boot with all the advantages of a wellie, and either an Oska or Ilse Jacobson rain coat. Both of these coats are real gems, keeping you dry, warm and very stylish!! All you need to finish the winter festival look is a fabulous blanket scarf, lovely leather gloves and voila! I’m looking forward to seeing lots of my friends and customers, old and new, over the coming weeks, and I promise we’ll only talk about the good stuff and we will do our best to sprinkle some magic Christmas fairy dust around so everyone gets what they wish for! ■

Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is!

LIGHTS ON 30TH NOVEMBER!

We officially start the celebrations on 30th of November on the Market Hill in Woodbridge, by turning on the Christmas lights at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome, with live

22

music, food and general festive celebrations on the square. Throughout the day the local shops will be adding Christmas touches to the shopping experience, and starting the festive count down. At Fanny and Frank we’ll be showing you our favourite Christmas looks and giving you great ideas for gifts, we’ll show you how to layer our yummy Miller Harris fragrances for a truly individual scent and how to put a sparkle in your wardrobe.

PARKSIDE WOODBRIDGE

Discovering those hidden gems

I

n recent years Woodbridge has become a key destination for independent shops and businesses, making it a vibrant, charming area to shop, as well as eat and drink. If you’ve never visited before, the town offers a wide variety of shops, from quaint gift stores where you can find a suitable gift for anyone (no matter how difficult), to beautiful boutiques which offer a range of beautiful clothes, to suit all ages and budgets. Together, a group of 21 independent shops have collaborated to form Parkside, with the goal of promoting

42

the end of the Thoroughfare near Elmhurst Park. They are determined to get the word out that the Thoroughfare has a wide diversity of charming, distinct shops all the way along, which all offer individual, bespoke wares – something really different from the high street chains.

S

ince the Parkside’s launch in July, an increase in shoppers has already been seen in this part of the town, as Laura Milldown from Laura Jane Boutique says, “working collaboratively, as part of Parkside, has had a really

positive effect on business. As a collective we have a bigger voice – as an independent it is hard to make yourself heard so by joining forces we can support each other and the town, which in turn generates more trade.” There is plenty of convenient parking near by, and after walking through the Turban Centre, simply turn right and you’ll be amongst the Parkside businesses. There's a wide variety of shops to discover, such as Holly Blue, Adams Apple, Ninni Noo and Laura Jane boutiques to jewellers and book shops, as well as buzzing café’s such as The Georgian Coffee House and Christine’s Patisserie, making it effortless to browse for hours, and not to mention helping to find something extra special this Christmas. n PARKSIDE LATE NIGHT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DECEMBER 7TH 5-8PM All shops will be offering 10% off merchandise. VERY YEAR, for some twenty seven years, the heavy oak doors of Blackthorpe Barn, in Rougham just outside Bury St Edmunds, are drawn back during November and December to unveil a truly magical and unique Christmas experience for all to enjoy. There’s a warm festive feel as you enter the Country Christmas Shop and see the glorious displays of decorations, gifts, treats and gorgeous aromas, combined with intricately designed and hand-made delights. The shop is open everyday from now until 22nd December and offers visitors a real treat in the form of inspiration for festive decoration colour themes for both inside

and out and unique gifts. For even more inspiration, each weekend from 11th November and for six weekends thereafter, visitors can experience the absolute best of our country’s talented and skilled crafts people as they showcase their individually hand-crafted items. This year an extra weekend of crafts has been added due to pure demand which sees the barn brimming with 100% British items all beautifully created by the exhibitors themselves. From the end of November famous Rougham Estate Christmas trees attract those who insist on the perfect festive centrepiece. Carefully nurtured throughout the year in

plantations surrounding the barn, they are available freshly cut or pot grown in many varieties. Blackthorpe Barn is just three miles east of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, off the A14 at junction 45 (Sat Nav IP30 9HZ) www.blackthorpebarn.com.

TRAVEL

What better way to put a smile on your face then a wintersun break after the festive season!

BY HAYLEY FROGLEY YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT TRAVEL CONSULTANT

Go Dubai... Dubai is one of the few places to enjoy a BEACH OR CITY?

beach holiday within the city, perfect for those post festive blues. There’s fun for everyone in Dubai – from family fun in one of the city’s many adventure water parks, swimming with the dolphins at The Atlantis The Palm, floating up the Burj Kaflia to see the magnificent views across the dessert, luxury dining by the sea at waterfront restaurants or just to shop, shop and shop in the beautiful malls. The whole experience is breathtaking and that’s not just the heat. WHEN TO GO? It is always sunny in Dubai. The best time to go is during the winter months (November-March) as the temperature hovers around 25°C making it a comfortable temperature for families and for those who wish to sightsee, compared to the high 40°C in the summer. During the winter it can be expensive, so if budget is an issue, travel between June and September as there are some amazing deals in 5* luxury at really affordable prices. Great value but expect higher temperatures. FLYING TIME: 7 hours direct, Emirates Airline. WHERE TO STAY: Here are my recommendations... Atlantis The Palm 5*: 4 nights includes flights, deluxe room, half board and transfers £1380.73 per person Grosvenor House 5*: 4 nights includes flights, deluxe room, half board and transfers £827.79 per person Ramada Jumeriah Hotel 4*: 4 nights includes flights, deluxe room, half board and transfers £561.59 per person *based on departures 22nd January 2018 – including Emirates flights

TOP TIPS FOR DUBAI Plan an itinerary before you travel as the temperature can be high – ideally early morning or after 4pm is manageable, especially if you are travelling with children. I suggest having at least 3 things planned each day, anything else you can fit in is a bonus. Pre book attractions before you leave as this will save you a small fortune! Use the Metro to get around Dubai. It’s easy to use and costs around £6 for a one day pass. Dubai˛’s weekend is a Friday and Saturday and celebrate in style with an incredible brunch. You will find superb offers on Groupon/dubai. co.uk before you travel which will include all your food, drink in a great location. Buy alcohol for your room in the duty free in Dubai airport. This will save you a lot of money especially if you like a tipple or 3! Taxi drivers at the airport will be happy to stop at a Metro if requested to pick up any soft drinks and mixers.

Let me help plan your next holiday

My service is free, I am always available whenever you need me and wherever you are. No call centres and no queueing! Contactable 7 days a week for any queries or bookings.

“Barker Gotelee handled my divorce from start to finish, turning a distressing experience into a positive one”

Regaining control after divorce THE PROBLEM: Late last year, my husband of 32 years told me he no longer loved me and that he wanted a divorce. His words left me floored. I tried everything to try to convince him to stay, but his mind was made up. I was devastated, not to mention worried about so many things: from how I’d support myself financially, to whether I’d have to go to court. I desperately wanted to get some control over this horrible situation, but didn’t know where to start. NANCY, IPSWICH

46

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

My husband, Richard, and I had spent most of our lives together. We met when we were in our twenties and we now have two grown-up children. When the youngest left for university, I was excited. Finally, we’d get a chance to spend quality time together. Yet the opposite happened: Richard increased the time he spent with his running club, was less affectionate when he was home, and put off my suggestions to do things I wanted, like going travelling together. I suppose the

signs were all there, but I was blind to them.

T

HE NIGHT he told me he wanted to separate, however, remains the worst of my life. Nothing I said made an ounce of difference – he was adamant. He said he cared for me, but wanted to start over – alone. Totally heart broken, I turned to a friend who’d recently gone through the same thing. She reassured me that things would be all right and suggested that I seek my own legal advice – not leave

Vanilla December 2017/January 2018

REAL LIVES it all up to my ex-husband to manage. He’d been very quick to appoint a solicitor after breaking the news to me.

F

IRED UP, I took my friend’s recommendation and went to see Amanda Erskine in the family team at Barker Gotelee. I had falsely thought most family solicitors would be inundated with clients at the start of January, so was surprised I was able to get an appointment with Amanda within a few days of my initial call. On meeting Amanda I was immediately reassured that she was on my side. She explained that, in order for the divorce to be as straightforward as possible, it would be beneficial if Richard and I reached an agreement on the wording of the divorce petition, and who would pay the costs involved in dealing with all the paperwork. At the time, I was in no fit state to do this myself so when Amanda explained that she could take away some of the stress and worry, it was a massive weight off my mind. Not only that, she reassured me that she’d do it all as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. I was worried about being hit with a huge bill at the end and, again, it was good to know I’d receive an itemised bill each month so I could keep track of where my money was being spent. After that first meeting, Amanda put the wheels in motion and made contact with Richard’s solicitor. Whilst Richard wanted the divorce and I didn’t, I wasn’t about to sit back and let him determine the outcome

of my future. At the same time Richard was working with his solicitor to prepare the petition and his proposed financial terms, simultaneously, Amanda and I worked together to define my own proposal for how best to divide our money and property. Amanda warned me that it is not unusual for the whole process to take between nine to twelve months – there’s no such thing as a quickie divorce!

N

ATURALLY, it’s rare that couples agree on everything straightaway, and Richard did contest some of the proposals we put forward. I would never have had the confidence to fight back, but

Amanda was amazing: she managed all dealings with his solicitor, was responsive to emails and phone calls and, ultimately, negotiated the best terms for me. For the first time, I found myself looking forward to my fresh start. Clearly, I am still so incredibly sad that things came to this, but I can’t thank Amanda and the family team at Barker Gotelee enough for making such a horrible situation so much easier to deal with. Without their constant support I’m not sure I’d have been able to keep going, but they enabled me to see through the other side and feel somewhat positive about my newly independent future. n

LEARNING

THE RIGHT TIME TO PLANT AN ACORN We ask Oakland Hall when is the right time for a child to start nursery?

O

AKLAND HALL is an all-inclusive day nursery, dedicated to the care and development of children from as young as three months to 5 years. In our beautiful Grade II listed building set in acres of gardens we offer a very special kind of care and attention that both nurtures and encourages every child, while also fully supporting and understanding the needs of both working and non-working parents. Many parents who are not in a rush to send their child to nursery often ask us… when is the right time for my child to start nursery? At Oakland Hall, we recognise that each child is different and unique and that the right time depends very much on the individual. But

50

whatever age they start here, we give them the best preparation in life, so that when they leave us they have the confidence to build on the personal and academic foundation we have helped to establish. We have three age-specific classrooms – Little Acorns, Super Saplings and Mighty Oaks – each designed to cater for the distinct and very different developmental stages in a child’s life. They are run by highly qualified and dedicated staff who give each child the attention they need to grow to their full potential. Here, members of staff describe the environment they work in and how they meet the children’s specific needs.

LITTLE ACORNS

Charlotte and Aimee have 13 years of baby room experience between them. “This classroom is where the nurturing starts at Oakland Hall, for babies between 3 months and 1 year. The focus is on both mental and physical stimulation, and we work closely with parents to continue the structured feeding and sleep routine they have already established at home. “The room is inviting, spacious, and a home-from-home environment. We have created a space where babies can explore their surroundings and senses and begin social interactions with others. It’s a very safe, secure room, which means they can begin to roll, crawl and walk confidently. Little acorn parents are very new to nursery care, but we ensure that the room is warm and inviting so they feel happy to leave their children for the first time. We feel very strongly that forming relationships with children and parents at this stage is particularly vital.”

Vanilla December 2017/January 2018

LEARNING

SUPER SAPLINGS

Hayley is Deputy Manager of the Nursery, and Emma has a degree in Early Years Learning care. “Here, children aged 2 to 3 years are introduced to a more structured routine, and they benefit from a full programme of stimulating, fun and educational activities, such as gardening and cookery, to support and encourage their ongoing development. Our aim is to enhance language and development, learn through play and to help children recognise colours, letters and numbers. It’s here that we help each child to form friendships and to understand the importance of kindness, respect for others and good manners. Our support for both parent and child helps to tackle key life skills such as toilet training. MIGHTY OAKS

Georgia is a former primary school teacher and Carmen has been with us since she left school. “We support children aged 3 to 5 years in the pre-school room, which is adapted to give them very specific support and preparation for big school. Our high staff to child ratio means that children benefit from one-to-one attention or small groups, where we can teach them basic numeracy, writing and phonetics, which is essential for learning to read. “We promote greater independence, encouraging social interaction, and structured learning through play is also a key part of the day here. Children leave our care with the confidence and solid grounding that ensures seamless transition to a school

environment. We send them off with a graduation ceremony, a very proud event for everyone.” At Oakland Hall, the journey from Little Acorns to Mighty Oaks is based on nurturing, understanding and preparation for life in an environment where learning is fun. It’s the very best start they can have. n

B

ruisyard Hall, the country house wedding venue set in the rolling countryside just outside Framlingham, is opening its doors for a Wedding Open day on Sunday 28th January from 10am to 2pm. Due to weekend wedding bookings, this Open Day is the only available weekend to view the Hall for at least four months. The Wedding Open Day at Bruisyard Hall is free to attend though guests do need to preregister online. It gives couples the chance to tour the 14th Century country house that provides luxury accommodation and can be an intimate wedding venue for up to 24 people. A few paces away, the lovingly refurbished medieval barn can host up to 140 guests for a ceremony and wedding breakfast. The open day means guests can see the venue, meet the team and meet a range of trusted suppliers. There will also be

canapés to sample and free prosecco for the first fifty guests through the door. Everyone will receive a goodie bag to take away. The Weddings Team will be available to check availability, talk through catering options and answer any questions that may arise. Alan Sabol, General Manager at Bruisyard Hall, explains: “We look forward to welcoming couples, their friends and family to Bruisyard Hall’s unspoilt corner of the Suffolk countryside. Our open day provides an opportunity for us to share the warmth and character that resonates from this magnificent estate as our guests mingle with suppliers and enjoy making plans for their special day.” Robert Rous, Owner of Bruisyard Hall, added: “Despite its grandeur, Bruisyard Hall is a cosy and welcoming ‘home from home’ for wedding parties to enjoy. Our family business is

So this is the perfect time for parents to start swimming lessons for their children in preparation for next year’s family summer hols. Did you know that, on average, it takes between one to two years for a young child to learn to swim, depending on their age? And the earlier a child takes to the water the quicker they will learn? Ali Abbott, Operations Administrator at First Strokes explains how

54

taking to the water is a vital start in life: “It’s very important to establish water confidence as soon as possible, so the earlier children start to learn to swim the better. Babies who are introduced to water learn to swim much faster, as they are already familiar with the sensation and have overcome their fear of water. “Learning does take time, though. Parents often come to us in May or June and ask us to help their child to learn to swim in time for a July holiday! But it really takes at least a year for a child of five or six to be confident enough to swim, so starting early is the key. You can join swimming

lessons at anytime with our continuous rolling swim school.” All certificates and badges are included in the price and children can move up when they are ready. First Strokes have the largest selection of classes in Ipswich, which is convenient for parents trying to fit in lessons for children of different ages, and they have free parking too!

S

O WHILE you are planning your Christmas, think ahead to next summer and sign your kids up for some lessons now. “First Strokes doesn’t close over the festive season – only Christmas Day, Boxing day and New Year’s Day – so we have

Modern and cool, relaxed and fun

continuous lessons running all the way through to next summer,” says Ali. “Plus, learners receive certificates and stickers throughout their journey which makes it fun too. “There is plenty going on through the winter, with classes for all ages, from baby and parent, to Duckling, which is babies without parents, and afterschool Starfish groups. Plus of course the usual fun family and inflatable sessions. “We want to encourage as many young people as possible to learn here, so we have recently launched a Refer a Friend scheme. If you are a member and you know someone who would

like to learn to swim, you can refer them and they will receive a free trial lesson, plus you will receive a free gift. “We have also started after-school Rookie Lifeguard sessions,” Ali says. “It’s open to 8 to 16-year-olds who can swim at least 25 metres, and teaches life saving, water safety, life support and First Aid skills. It’s a great way for young people to learn how to take care of themselves, their friends and family and helps them to promote water safety in their day-to-day activities. We are holding a taster session over the Christmas holiday, so this is the perfect time to get involved and learn a vital life skill.” n

BE RED CARPET READY! with a Radio frequency facial at The Scultura Clinic

There are many benefits of the Lipofirm Plus Radio Frequency facial treatments which has led to their increasing popularity and celebrity following, with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Amanda Holden and Nicole Scherzinger now favouring the treatment over injectables. Dr Tanna at The Scultura Clinic in Mendlesham, explains:

HOW DOES RADIO FREQUENCY WORK?

Radio frequency is all about stimulating your own collagen production. During a treatment

a machine is used to heat the skin to between 38-40 degrees with radio frequency, which feels like a hot stone face massage – you do feel heat in the skin but it’s comfortable. Radio frequency simply relies on the body’s own natural healing abilities. Natural production of collagen and elastin stops as we get older. The heat of the radio frequency treatment stimulates cells in the connective tissues causing the body to reproduce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid that has depleted over the years. IS THERE ANY OTHER DISCOMFORT OR DOWNTIME INVOLVED?

None at all! Your treatment begins with a soothing facial to prepare your skin. Scultura Clinic use Elizabeth Arden Pro professional products which are available to purchase. The whole face is then treated with the radio frequency. There is no downtime so you could easily have a treatment at lunchtime and go out that evening looking amazing!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

You get an immediate tightening of the collagen fibres. If you opt for a full course of 6 treatments, your results will be long lasting, with the added benefit that collagen will continue to build for a further 3 months post treatment. CAN RADIO FREQUENCY HELP REDUCE LINES AND WRINKLES?

It’s great for softening fine lines – especially the nose to mouth lines – as well as lifting the cheeks and tightening the jawline, so it’s great for age prevention. Radio frequency is quick, convenient and painless, immediately revealing tighter, younger looking skin, all without the cost and pain of cosmetic procedures promising similar results.

PHILIP KINGSLEY HAIR SPA TREATMENT For hair that needs shine, bounce and strength....

A

RE YOU ONE OF THOSE annoying people who wake up with perfect hair? Well I'm not, and recently it's got a lot worse. Whether it’s age or lifestyle-related, my formerly silky smooth mane is now a dry mess. I sought professional help from Ipswich Trichology Hair and Scalp Clinic. As well as being experts on all hair and scalp problems, they also offer products by Philip Kingsley – the nation’s recognised authority on hair health. I booked in for the renowned PK Hair Spa Treatment, as my hair needed more than a run-of-the-mill condition. Upon arrival, my hair was assessed by trichologist, Giovanni De Lellis, so he could recommend a treatment tailor-

62

made for me. I was prescribed an intensive scalp treatment to optimise hair growth and texture. This began with the application of a scalp mask and followed by Kingsley’s famous ‘elasticizer’ treatment – a thick and gloopy cream applied all over the hair to add shine, suppleness, bounce and strength. Ten minutes under the hot steam machine helps the elasticizer to soak into your hair cuticles, before a ten-minute head massage finishes the treatment. Afterwards, my hair was washed, conditioned and finished with a scalp tonic all chosen to suit

my hair type, and finished with a gentle blow dry. I bought some of the Kingsley products and have repeated the treatment at home – a plastic cap and heat from a hairdryer replacing the ‘professional steam’! I was delighted with the results, which lasted for weeks. My hair was glossy, shiny and back to its luscious former incarnation n PK Hair Spa Treatment is £50 at Ipswich Trichology Hair and Scalp Clinic, 63 St Matthews Street, Ipswich, IP1 3EW Visit www.ipswichtrichology.co.uk for more information.

We have visions of the perfect Christmas – the fabulous meal, treasured and thoughtful gifts, the happy contented laughter of those we love and obviously big fluffy flakes of snow falling too. As humans we have a tendency that whenever we get something, we want more. You get a B grade at school you want an A. You earn so much, then you want more. Your gorgeous new partner brings you fresh coffee in bed – after a couple of weeks you expect it. it all becomes normalised. So how can we get happy?

One of the ways we get happy is by being grateful for all the things that we already have. Family, health, time, love, a great sense of humour, imagination... whatever it is. Random and thoughtful acts of kindness also increase our happiness levels whereas, according to research material things give us an instant high, cause us to flatline almost immediately. So write down a list of what and whom is important in your life and get some perspective. As for ‘perfect’ gifts this Christmas, the most precious gift we have is our time. Decide whether or not you will be giving that, (remembering you don’t HAVE to, as you have choices). Give the gift of love to yourself this year. Seasons Greetings and happiness to you all.

IFU, the “non surgical face and neck lift” is the latest craze to take the beauty world by storm. We visited Karolina at New You laser and aesthetic clinic in Ipswich, who is extremely passionate about the benefits of this ‘revolutionary’ non-surgical facelift treatment. The clinic specialises in advanced technology beauty treatments, including those to help with inch loss, cellulite removal, body contouring and reduction of lines and wrinkles. Karolina explains in detail about the state-of-the-art machines they have invested in and its capabilities. She is convinced the HIFU Face Lift is without question, the world’s most advanced, non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. Attracting new clients from across the county, popular problem areas for treatment include brow lifting, jowl line lifting, nasolabial fold reduction and periorbital wrinkle reduction.

64

Before

After 6 months

These pictures demonstrate how overall results can be, but this will vary for each individual. It is important you discuss with your clinician what is achievable.

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

THE EXPERIENCE

The real benefit of HIFU is only one treatment is needed to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Results develop over the course of 2-3 months, with continued improvement for up to 6 months and lasting approximately two years. Ideal candidates for a HIFU Face Lift are those with the early signs of loose, sagging, wrinkled or even sun damaged skin (that’s most of us over 40 then!). With no cuts to the skin and no potential for scarring, it is easy to see why this is fast becoming many celebrities facelift of choice.

I had the full face treatment – the treatment was quite uncomfortable but bearable. According to Karolina, it depends on how high you can tolerate the settings for heat and vibration, and some areas of the face are more sensitive than others. The full face took about an hour to treat.

THE TECHY STUFF

The HIFU Face Lift uses high intensity focused ultrasound to stimulate the skins deep support structures. This single session treatment utilises the body’s own ‘wound healing response’ that results in formulation of new collagen that in turn lifts, tones and tightens the skin.

THE RESULTS

There was absolutely no downtime for me with this treatment, although I looked a bit flushed for a short while. In the weeks that followed the treatment, my skin appears lifted, firmer and toned while fine lines and wrinkles have visibly reduced as the skin has tightened. The full effects are still to be seen in a month or so. New You currently have a special offer of a full face HIFU treatment for £350 (reduced from £500). YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Carter and the team at Image

I HAVE BEEN BITING MY NAILS FOR 20 YEARS. HOW CAN I STOP?

This is not an easy habit to kick, but a good place to start is to begin looking after your nails. If you get a gel manicure, you won’t want to ruin your gorgeous new glossy nails – particularly if you are paying for them! The layers create a thick coating that is really hard to bite through. Keep this up with regular manis, and swap your bad habit for a good habit by maintaining the look of your hands. Or, if you’re on a budget, try taking care of them at home. Why not file your nails and apply cuticle oil and hand cream rather than spending time biting? It will relax you and make you feel good. Top tip: There are products you can buy to put on your nails that taste very unpleasant to deter you from biting. If nothing else works, they are worth trying. IS THERE A PARTICULAR MAKE UP BRAND SUITE TO MATURE SKIN ?

I am 52 years old and my foundation shows up lines I didn’t even know I had. There is a different make up brand for every person, not one works for all. They key is too seek advice from the brand that you currently use if it works for you

66

but ask them to show you the specific products within the brand that can target your needs. A good place to start would be to get a good primer, this will help your foundation base to stay on top of your skin rather than falling into the fine lines. Follow this with a non matte foundation – this will ensure you are creating a dewy, natural look rather than having a heavy base that will accentuate any lines and wrinkles. Top tip: Always get a sample or get your beauty advisor to apply the foundation on your face. Wear it for the day and make sure you like the texture before you buy. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET RID OF HARD SKIN ON MY FEET?

It is important to tackle hard skin carefully as over filing will result in your feet being sore and too uncomfortable to walk on. Always file when the skin is dry as wet feet masks the areas in need of treating. Start by filing your feet about once a week and apply oil and a good moisturiser every day to maintain the feet between each file. You will start to notice a big difference. If your hard skin is cracked and painful and you are really concerned, seek advice and treatment from a chiropodist. Top tip: Once a week wear cotton socks loaded with a foot mask when you go to bed and in the morning your feet will feel divine! n

the combination of working hard and balancing engages the whole body. FloatFit is challenging, but also huge fun, and balancing on a board in the water is all part of what makes it so enjoyable. Classes are small, and with just 5 boards in the pool it’s very much like a personal training session. “It’s a very comfortable environment as well, a far cry from sweaty cramped gyms or drafty studios. Our pool in Ipswich is set to a balmy 31 degrees inside and out.”

FLOAT F FIT A revolution takes to the water!

HERE ARE so many forms of exercise these days; yoga, spinning, Zumba, good old fashioned running or swimming, that it’s difficult to know which one is best for you. But there’s a revolutionary new water-based fitness class that is already finding fans around the world, especially in America and Australia, and it’s unlike any aqua aerobics you have ever tried! FloatFit is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, and rather than being in the swimming pool, participants are each given a wide float, or AquaBase, on which to stand while they are taken through a low impact routine of high intensity and yoga inspired

68

moves. Balancing on the board makes your core work continuously, plus the water resistance intensifies muscle toning. Juliette John, who has introduced FloatFit classes to Ipswich this Autumn, says it’s a very effective form of exercise, and great fun too. “This is a water-based class, so there is much less stress on joints compared with, say, running. It’s also fantastic for posture, balance and coordination, as well as improving muscular strength and endurance. “The routines target key muscles in the body and you burn off at least 400 calories in the 30-minutes classes because

LOATFIT first burst onto the scene in July 2015, but received international attention when a video of a class went viral and was viewed over 120 million times – causing a spike in searches for the term on Google. So this revolution on the water looks like it could become the next fitness trend, and why not? For those of us trying to keep fit we want the experience to be both effective and fun, and FloatFit certainly fits the bill as a new and exciting way to exercise. You don’t need to take much to your Aquaphysical Floatfit class – a swimming costume or gym gear, a towel, change of clothes and some water, and of course the enthusiasm to work and play hard! n FLOATFIT CLASSES

Classes cost £10 and are held at The Lodge, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich IP4 3QH. Free Parking. For all bookings and enquires please contact Floatfit Ipswich: t: 01473 222145 m: 07909 500466

Hypnotherapy: Can it really solve the problem?

A

S A WORKING MOTHER I am used to hectic schedules, and sometimes the fraught feeling, as I'm sure you will agree, seems to come with the territory. But then I began to realise that every day was accompanied by an underlying feeling of anxiety and I was permanently tense. I decided it couldn’t be good for my longterm health to be like this all the time. I felt silly going to my GP about it, so decided to turn to an alternative remedy: hypnotherapy. This is when I met Anita Hughes, a fully qualified and licensed member of the Hypnotherapist Society, who runs sessions from her home in Ravenswood, Ipswich. Hypnotherapy is a relaxed state of altered consciousness, which all of us will have experienced at some point in our lives. You are still in full control and can hear everything around

70

you, so rest assured you can’t be forced to do or say anything against your will! Hypnotherapy can increase self-confidence and self-esteem, improve your performance in interviews and exams, banish driving test nerves, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, IBS, OCD, relationship and health issues, fears and phobias, and even help with natural child birth.

I

WAS CERTAINLY RELAXED during my sessions with Anita. Resting in a large, comfortable chair with headphones on, I focused on Anita’s soothing voice and I must admit I did fall asleep at some point. Amazingly, after two sessions, she said I wouldn’t need any more. At £45 per session, I thought it was money well spent. Most people need two or three sessions a couple of weeks apart, although if you wish to quit smoking, this can be done in just

one session for £75. This was three months ago now and I have to say I haven’t experienced any of the anxiety I was feeling prior to the sessions. And I’m not the only one who has benefitted from Anita's healing sessions. Alison had tried every diet going but found them hard to stick to before the weight piled back on again. After two sessions she found that she no longer craved unhealthy foods and naturally began to eat less. With one further session and a CD to listen to at home, Alison has continued to gradually lose weight on her own. Anita doesn’t seem to have any on-going clients – they come, they get fixed and have no need to return. Now that’s the ultimate testimonial to hypnotherapy. WHAT’S ON YOUR WISHLIST?

We asked our business owners what their next buy will be for their own homes...

DARRELL SMITH

JILL BARRETT

Barretts of Woodbridge WISHLIST: Ludwik dining furniture “I fell in love with the Ludvik range when Louis, our Assistant Manager, first showed me at a show – it has just the look we wanted for the shop, and I can imagine the whole family tucking into Sunday lunch seated around the gorgeous table too! “Clean lines and practical, yet beautiful ‘hardened oil’ finishes retain the state and beauty of natural wood, whilst the hand planed door panels, tinted glass and wooden ‘shingle’ back panels offer a retro and rustic twist. ‘Oakville’, is truly the ‘Grand Designs’ of the furniture world! “A wonderful range of storage and display pieces are offered, not to mention the ‘piece de la resistance’ extending dining table, which is so easy to extend, and can be made in up to 48 different sizes; perfect to suit the family’s day to day and dinner party requirements.”

December 2017/January 2018 Vanilla

Archway Carpets WISHLIST: Brockway carpet in Arctic Grey “Well, I see so many lovely carpets and vinyl designs that I would love to have in my own home, but top of my ‘wish’ list for the flooring at home in 2018 is a gorgeous grey wool mix carpet and, for me, I like the Arctic Grey in the Dimension Heathers range from Brockway. It’s a lovely subtle grey so it will work well as a background theme and some bright, accent colours will give an amazing finish to the room”.

2018 HOMES RACHEL WOROBEC Deben Carpets WISHLIST: Alternative Flooring Barefoot Marble wool carpet

“For my home it would have to be the Alternative Flooring Barefoot Wool Marble Morwad Carpet; the reason is because it’s neutral yet luxurious underfoot, so you can dress up the room around the base colours of this carpet yet still have that unique yet natural look.”

SUBHASH MODASIA

Ipswich Bathroom & Tile centre WISHLIST: BC Designs Boat Bath “A solid cast, hand-polished Aluminium boat bath is a showstopper, much lighter than the cast iron models of yesteryear and does not tarnish like the original. BC Designs offer a painting service on all of their boat baths where customers can choose colours from Farrow & Ball and The Little Greene Paint Company, so perfect for matching décor.”

NATHAN HALL

Just Tiles WISHLIST: Riven Slate porcelain tiles “At the moment I’m loving the contemporary look of these Riven Slate porcelain floor tiles. The tiles have an appearance which combines both natural slate and sandstone to create a sense of tranquillity using a variation of neutral tones. Much like real stone, the Riven Slate tiles are hardwearing, durable and have a slip resistant texture, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Essentially perfect for any area of the home.”

FOOD

Yes Chef!

Perfect for Christmas Day canapés or winter evenings in front of the TV... a beautifully simple recipe from local celebrity chef Emma Crowhurst

Gravadlax 2 x 500g pieces skin-on organic salmon fillet, both cut from the centre of the fish. 75g flaky sea salt 75g golden caster sugar 1 tsp black peppercorn, roughly crushed zest of 1 lemon 8 juniper berries, crushed (optional) small bunch (about 20g) dill, roughly chopped 2 tbsp gin (cucumber gin works really well!) Dill & mustard sauce small bunch (about 20g) dill, roughly chopped 4 tbsp Dijon or grainy mustard, 4 tbsp cider vinegar, 4 tbsp honey 4 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tbsp muscovado sugar

86

1 Dry the salmon with kitchen paper and pin bone. Set the salmon fillets aside. 2 Tip the salt, sugar, peppercorns, lemon zest, juniper and dill into a food processor and blitz until you have a bright green, wet salt mixture or ‘cure’. 3 Place the fish in a shallow baking dish, tip half the cure over the fish, then place the other piece on the top, cover with the remaining cure, cling film and press with a plate or tray. 4 Chill in the fridge for 2 -4 days. The longer you leave it the more cured it will become. 5 To make the sauce, tip all the sauce ingredients into a blender. Blitz until you have a thickened dressing. 6 To serve unwrap the fish and brush off the marinade with kitchen paper. Rinse it if you like. Slice very thin and serve for starters or canapes with the dill sauce. For more information on Emma visit www.emmacrowhurst.co.uk.

Sam Denny-Hodson Homespun, Woodbridge

My East Coast Life Sam Denny-Hodson is the creator of Homespun Cashmere, which took up residency of its own shop in Woodbridge two years ago. The shop sells Homespun Cashmere and an array of other international designer labels. Sam lives with her family, including three sons, in Woodbridge.

Can you see yourself living anywhere else ? No, we have lived in Chediston (just outside Halesworth) in a very old farmhouse and have a house in Southwold, both of which we adored. However with all three boys at Woodbridge school and Homespun shop, Woodbridge is perfect for this stage in our lives. I feel very rooted here, and part of the community.

How did you get into the fashion world?

And what inspired you to start your own cashmere label?

Having had my own PR agency for 15 years, I realised that I couldn’t maintain the amount of international travel with small children. I also wanted to make sure that whatever I did next was something I could be passionate about and proud of. Living in the Suffolk countryside, I happily abandoned my high heels and dresses and started wearing jeans pretty much daily. I wanted to make something that I could wear

What do you think is special about Woodbridge and the shopping scene?

everyday and yet feel amazing. I knew from working in knitwear for years that the finest cashmere comes from Mongolia. I spent two years looking for a factory to work with. Luckily for me I have Doug, a Scottish knitwear expert who runs the operation over there for me, he fell in love with a Mongolian girl so is happy to stay there.

Well I would say this, but I really think that the independent shops in Woodbridge are unbeatable. I’ve been looking at other towns and cities in the UK as my son is choosing a university and they all seemed so full of chain stores. I’m not saying that chain stores are terrible, we all use them, but we are so lucky to have a vibrant independent scene that can really cater to what local people want.

I came on my own with a small baby as my husband had gone to the Glastonbury festival and I wanted a weekend away from London. We rented a little cottage in Friston (just outside Aldeburgh) and I fell in love with the place. I called my husband to tell him straightaway that I was buying the cottage, which was handily for sale... We bought it without my husband ever seeing inside!

I buy all my books from Browsers on the Thoroughfare, if they don’t have what you want they will order it. My house is like a showroom of the gorgeous products from Vanil. I’ve put on a stone thanks to the delicious bread from The Cake Shop and a weekly bunch of beautiful blooms from Woodbridge Flowers is my treat to myself. My favourite pace to eat in town is the Cook Shed and The Anchor for a roast. ■

How did you come to live in Suffolk?

Any local hidden gems?

PHOTOGRAPHY: JULIA BOSTOCK

I started working in fashion publicity straight after university. This was a wonderful world of fashion shows, photo shoots and travel, perfectly suited to a single 20 something. I worked for companies such as Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Valentino, Marks & Spencer and Kate Spade... but one of my most enjoyable projects was working with John Smedley, the British knitwear brand, as I’d grown up near to their mill in Derbyshire.
