TUNNEL OF LIGHT Last year, thousands flocked to Norwich to experience the UK’s first Tunnel of Light when it was unveiled in the heart of the city centre. The 45-meters long, 4 meters high and 6 meters wide tunnel, made from 50,000 pulsating LEDs with sequenced lights that reflected the patterns and colours of the Northern December 2017/January 2018 Vanilla

Lights, proved an instant Instagram sensation. All ages marvelled at the tunnel, which became even more magical as day turned into dusk and dusk turned into night. But how do you improve on perfection? Well, you crown it, and so in 2017 the Tunnel of Light is back once again, but this year with a new animation sequence and a glittering tiara.

THEY’RE ON! As we go to press the lights go on, so get yourselves into the city centre to admire the best Christmas city in the country.

It is a glamorous, exhilarating show with sensational costumes and the NNOS is excited to have secured the production rights for the region. TOP HAT is packed with Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, including Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, Let’s

N 1st November intu Chapelfield in Norwich unveiled a unique, feature Christmas decoration that will help raise money for a very important cause this winter; the EACH nook appeal. The star-shaped decoration is visible from all three floors of the shopping centre, with baubles, lights and butterflies cascading down from the dining terrace roof. intu Chapelfield visitors can buy one of 2,017 limited edition glass baubles, inspired by the star, for their own Christmas trees, with proceeds going to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). Each bauble contains a handmade, purple origami butterfly and sparkling gold lametta, and has a delicate tag etched with its unique number. It comes in a purple, satin-lined keepsake box. “The Butterfly Bauble campaign for EACH is already resonating with our shoppers and staff as it enables them to support an incredibly worthy cause whilst also bringing some sparkle to their homes,” said Sheridan Smith, marketing manager at intu Chapelfield. “We hope the EACH Butterfly Baubles become part

Christmas baubles help raise funds for good cause of the tree-trimming tradition in hundreds of local families, as well as helping us to raise £29,000 for the charity.” At the launch event, members of the intu Chapelfield team were joined by representatives from EACH as well as two very special guests: 12 year old Rebekah Hughes from Aylsham, who has a severe form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome, and eight year old Toby Fletcher from Foulden, who has dystonic cerebral palsy, meaning he cannot move his body. Both youngsters and their families receive medical and respite support from EACH. An EACH Butterfly Bauble costs £30 and for an extra £5 shoppers can request a particular number from 0001-2017 – perhaps a birth year, anniversary or age. “They

are a really unique gift for, or in memory of, a loved one and we hope lots of people will share their bauble pictures and stories with us on social media” continues Sheridan Smith. All proceeds will go to EACH’s nook appeal, a £10 million campaign to build a new hospice just five miles south of Norwich, in Framingham Earl, and transform children’s palliative care. THE COTTAGE

Celebrating 10 Years in Norwich!

T

his month we are celebrating our 10th anniversary which is super exciting for us! We have grown from a small cottage team into a big cottage family over the last 10 years, expanding from a small cosy cottage into a well-established characteristic salon. Right in the heart of Norwich is the perfect place for you to enjoy some indulgent ‘me time’. The Cottage is a true gem: a warm and welcoming salon where you can choose from a whole range of hair, beauty, massage and therapeutic treatments. Relax with a freshly made ground coffee or a loose herbal tea and put yourself in the expert hands of our welcoming, friendly team. From small beginnings, we now have a highly trained crew of more than twenty-five dedicated

staff and an ever-growing number of loyal customers. We hope you join them and discover our oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Our carefully selected range of top brand products ensures consistently superb results and happy clients. Occupying a prime corner site in a building packed with character and traditional features, the salon is spread over three spacious floors. Stylish, luxurious, shabby chic, quirky – this fabulous space is a far cry from the clinical monochrome appearance of many other salons. We have lots of exciting Christmas sets on offer with brands; Redken, RAW, Bare Minerals and Pevonia. Make sure you step inside and take

a look around. Why not treat your lovedones to a Gift Voucher? These can be purchased either in the salon or via our website; choose a pampering treatment or a monetary value. See beauty gifts on page 57.

S N G I E R Y T I L s’ QGUetA o ‘hidden extra n h it w t es b e th In the last edition I wrote about getting the right type of frame for your personality and look. I explained that we do the frame styling differently at Oculus, encouraging people to try lots of different styles, colours, shapes and materials. Of course the frame is important, but lets consider why you wear glasses in the first place. We only dispense Seiko specialist lenses ensuring that you get the best possible combination of thinnest materials, coatings and tints suited to your lifestyle. Our varifocals are all individualised to your precise fitting and prescription to make sure you don’t have to do the nodding dog thing to read with them! One of my pet hates is

opticians upselling. You know how it goes, you pick a frame and are quoted a price you are happy with. Then it’s “with your prescription you’ll be wanting the thinner lenses and better coatings which are an extra etc etc...” Let’s think about that? Who on earth wants thick, ugly lenses when you know thin lenses are available? Our prices include the thinnest possible material for your prescription and any coatings or tints which are best for your lifestyle. After all, why ruin a beautiful looking frame with ugly lenses! We look forward to seeing you and we’re always happy for people to try on our lovely frames.

“Compromise is key and you need to ensure that you both do what is best for your children”

How can we make Christmas work now we’re separated? MY QUESTION: Earlier this year, my husband and I separated. Together, we have two children who are now 8 and 11 and this is the first Christmas that we will not be spending together as a family. After the stressful year we have had, I want to make Christmas for my children as special as I can but I have my concerns, especially with regard to how we are going to manage the contact arrangements between us so that the children get quality time with each of us over the festive period. Is there any advice that you can give me as to how to go about Christmas as a separated or divorced parent?

50

C

HRISTMAS is a special time for children and parents too; it is understandable that you want to make it a magical time. Traditionally, Christmas is a time for the family but that does not mean that for separated parents it cannot work. For many people, whatever their circumstances, it can be a stressful time of year but there are ways to relieve this and make Christmas as enjoyable as possible for your Vanilla December 2017/January 2018

REAL LIVES

children, yourself and your ex-partner. Firstly, a very key part to organising Christmas, like any other year, is planning. This year, you will not just have to plan what presents you will get for your children but who is going to have the children and when. There are several common options which many separated parents take. Whichever option you choose will likely take a bit of adjusting to at first but, in time, you will find an arrangement that best suits your family. Some families alternate which year each parent has the children and others split up Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It is advisable that you attempt to settle the arrangements between yourselves but, if this is not possible, then you may wish to seek advice from a solicitor. The first step is usually a letter written to your ex-partner setting out what you would like to happen in the hope that matters may be agreed between you. If that fails then a further option would be to refer the matter to family mediation. If mediation is unsuccessful or considered unsuitable, you then have the option of making an application to court. If a court order is made this will be legally binding on both parties and will ensure peace of mind and consistency going forwards. Your first step is to contact your ex-partner to try and organise what you both think is best for your children this Christmas.

Once you have decided upon your arrangements, you will need to ensure that your children are aware in plenty of time what will be happening this year. This will ensure that there is enough time to make any changes and help your children be more accepting of the plans.

HEN trying to make Christmas the best it can be for your children, try not to focus on the monetary side of it. It is advised that you and your ex-partner decide between you what you will purchase for your children; that way, neither parent can spoil the children and there is no danger of doubling up on gifts. Whilst your children may not

be with you over Christmas, try not to control your ex-partner’s time with them. Ensure that you continue some family traditions, such as leaving a carrot for the reindeer and try not to focus on Christmases past. Compromise is key and you need to ensure that you both do what is best for your children to stop any future family issues arising. Also ensure that, so far as possible, you are accepting and supportive of the arrangements that have been put in place. If you are experiencing any issues with an ex-partner over arrangements for contact with your children this Christmas, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with us. n

here are some things a girl just has to have, and these days a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is one. They are practical, comfortable, great fun and a vehicle type that exudes an aspirational lifestyle – so long as one chooses wisely! Ensuring the correct credentials is important and the new Volkswagen T-Roc design fits the bill perfectly! This is right on trend and delivers all the right messages! It’s a car which makes a bold statement, its muscular looks makes it stand out from the crowd – purposeful yet sporty. The face shows off a wide grille enclosing the headlights. There is a chrome strip running the length of the roofline and with the option of a contrast roof colour, this makes the side view appear longer, more elegant, more coupé like. security, and with a lit foot well and illuminated decorative trims the inside feels modern and welcoming. The T-Roc bristles with safety features and driver aids. Front Assist gives an audible warning if it detects a possible collision then prepares for braking and if the driver does not react in time, the City Emergency Braking system steps in to slow the car, which at worse, will reduce the impact but just as likely it will avoid the bump altogether. The electric parking brake is designed to prevent the car rolling back when pulling away on a hill, (essential if cousin Hermione borrows the car!) There’s also parking sensors with optical display, connectivity for your smart phone and Driver Alert can detect when the driver is showing signs of fatigue... now there’s clever! The Volkswagen T-Roc is definitely a “must have” perfect for everything from the school run, touring the Highlands, the shopping trip or the golf club. n

LET’S N TALK ABOUT MOUTH CANCER

ovember was the Oral Health Foundation Cancer Action Month, and I wanted to talk to Vanilla readers about this very real issue and make them aware of the risks, the symptoms and a what they can do to help prevent oral cancer. It’s not the most festive of subjects, but the fact is that there are 2,400 deaths per year from oral cancer, an increase from 1,600 20 years ago. And the number of cases and deaths is increasing. Anyone can be affected by oral cancer, whether they have their own teeth or not. Mouth cancers are more common in people over 40, particularly men, however, research has shown that it is becoming more common in younger patients and in women. Many of the deaths from mouth cancer can be prevented with early diagnosis. The fact is that people with mouth cancer are more likely to die than those with cervical cancer or malignant melanoma. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

Norwich dentist Ross Campbell talks about mouth cancer and how you can help to minimise the risk

54

The main causes are smoking and chewing tobacco, which together account for 70% of cases. Another risk is a diet low in fruit and vegetables, which has been identified as being a cause of 56% of cases. Alcohol above recommended safe levels is also key, at 30% of cases, and if tobacco and alcohol are consumed together the risk is even greater. Over-exposure to sunlight can also increase

the risk of cancer of the lips. The HPV (human papilova virus) is associated with 8% of cases. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS?

Mouth cancer can appear in different forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips; a painless mouth ulcer that hasn’t healed normally, or within 3 weeks, or if it bleeds easily; or a white or red patch in the mouth can also develop into a cancer, as can any unusual lump or swelling. You should see your dentist as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of these problem areas, or you are in any pain or discomfort. Be mouth aware and look for changes. HOW CAN MOUTH CANCER BE DETECTED EARLY?

Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by your dentist with a thorough examination. If mouth cancer is recognised early, then the chances of a cure are good, however, many people wait too long before going to their dentist or doctor. We carry out a visual examination of the face and neck, looking for any unusual swellings or lumps, and a manual examination of the neck to check for any enlarged or tender glands. We also do a visual check of the inside of the mouth to assess anything which may be considered unusual or abnormal, especially the floor of the mouth below the tongue. We check as far back in the throat as we can. You may consider undergoing

Vanilla December 2017/January 2018

HEALTH

an assessment of risk factors. We use a system called DEPPA which was introduced by Denplan. This gives a risk value of 1 - 5 following a questionnaire which covers diet, alcohol consumption and smoking, either currently or historically. Through this we can identify specific areas of higher risk and give advice which may be helpful to the patient. If we find something unusual as part of our oral examinations we will refer you for an urgent hospital appointment, which means you will be seen within two weeks. WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT MOUTH CANCER? There is very simple and clear advice that can help minimise the risk of you developing mouth cancer.

l Visit your dentist regularly,

as often as they recommend, even if you wear dentures. This is especially important if you smoke and drink alcohol. l Be vigilant and mouth aware. When brushing your teeth, look out for any changes in your mouth, and see your dentist if there are any red or white patches, or ulcers, that have not cleared up within three weeks. l Cut down on smoking and drinking. This is the most important advice I can give you and it will benefit you in more ways than helping to prevent mouth cancer. l Use a good protective sun cream all year round, but especially in hot weather and direct sunlight. Put barrier cream on your lips, too. l Eating a good diet rich in

December 2017/January 2018 Vanilla

vitamins A, C and E provides excellent protection against mouth cancer. Plenty of fruit and vegetables help the body to protect itself, in general, from most cancers. I hope this has helped you to understand the risks or mouth cancer, and given you some helpful advice that you can put in place now. Have a wonderful, healthy and happy Chistmas and New Year from all of us at the practice. n If you are concerned about anything in this article and would like some advice please call the Practice on 01603 660758, and we will answer any questions you may have. LIENTS at a new city salon are being treated to a more pampering style of service allowing them to enjoy some relaxing and chilled ‘metime’ while getting their hair done. Leveridges Salon, at 30 St Benedicts Street, Norwich, opened its doors for business on June 30 and is already proving a big hit with those who enjoy being looked after in a calm and tranquil environment. Carly Leveridge and her partner Tom Marsden run the business and are already expanding the services on offer to provide a range of beauty treatments. Carly, who has been hairdressing for seven years, said: “Usually, salons are lively places where there is a lot of hustle and bustle, but I wanted to create an oasis of calm to give clients a more chilled space where they could come in and take some quiet time out of their busy day.” It has always been Carly’s

ambition to run her own business, but it took her two years to find the right premises, which she stumbled on by chance. “The traffic was really busy one morning, so I took a short cut along St Benedicts and noticed that the shop was up for let. I have found commercial properties get snapped up, so I acted quickly,” she said.

T

HE property has a 1920s shop front and benefits from high ceilings. To create the relaxing atmosphere, Carly has designed the salon’s interior by combining the property’s vintage character with a luxurious and contemporary feel. “We have soft mood music playing and when a client arrives we take their jacket, offer them a drink, show them to the seating area before they have a consultation,” said Carly. Demand at the new salon has been so great that currently Carly is unable to take on any new

clients. However, with three other stylists working at Leveridges there's always a way you can be accommodated. Clients can also benefit from a range of beauty treatments. The basement has been converted into treatment rooms to accommodate a nail technician, waxing specialist, microblading brow expert and a qualified physician offering botox and fillers. “In the future I would love to open my own hairdressing training academy and possibly open another branch of the salon in another town or city, such as Cambridge,” said Carly. “We expect to be very busy in the run-up to Christmas, but will make sure we welcome all our clients with some festive cheer.”■ 30 St Benedicts Street Norwich 01603 621965 Leveridges Salon

DRAWING ON YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY

One of the most popular treatments Laura offers is microblading, or semi permanent make-up. “This is an advanced cosmetic technique which involves implanting tiny amounts of coloured pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. It’s ideal for eyebrows, lashes and lips and is completely safe and painless.

F YOU ARE like me you don’t feel your absolute best until you have put on your make-up! It makes me feel empowered, well groomed and sometimes beautiful. Leading make-up artist Laura Queen understands how make-up can effect a woman’s appearance and self esteem. She is a pioneer in the beauty revolution and from her salon, Permanent Beauty, on Bridewell Alley, Norwich, offers the very latest make-up treatments such as microblading, High Definition Brows and LVL Lashes. These cutting edge techniques are becoming popular with women who want to look their very best all the time. Laura explains: “More and more women are wanting enhanced

beauty and to look exceptional 24 hours a day. Everyone is busy, and these treatments are ideal for women on the go – they don’t have to worry about fiddling with makeup before they leave the house because their essential make-up is already in place.” Laura’s passion for make-up started when she was very young. “Like most girls, I spent hours perfecting my eyeliner and trying my hardest to cover my teenage spot prone skin! After years of practice on myself and my friends, it felt natural for me to become a makeup artist. I have worked for a variety of the most famous luxury beauty brands including Estee Lauder and MAC, gaining top technical skills along the way.”

yebrows are my passion,” says Laura, “and the majority of my clients are women who want to create and maintain a flattering natural eyebrow shape. Using microblading I can rescue the sparsest, most over-plucked eyebrow and give it new life with a hair simulation technique, where small amounts of pigment is applied to mimic the look of natural eyebrow hairs. “Semi-permanent make-up also gives eyes extra depth and definition with the careful placement of pigmentation on the eyelids. Eyelashes can be further enhanced with tiny amounts of dye between each eyelash to make them appear thicker. “Every woman wants beautiful sensual lips, and we can help her achieve this by adding pigment to make lips appear larger and fuller, while eliminating the frustration of lipstick bleed.” Permanent Beauty is offering women a new way to look glamorous on the go, to ditch the heavy mask of thick make-up and to feel transformed, but still naturally beautiful. ■ Permanent Beauty, 14 Bridewell Alley, Norwich. www.laura-dossett.co.uk t: 01603 614333 or 07814 539 897

BACK, FACE & SCALP TREATMENT ‘Hero’ treatment at The Beauty Room, Norwich

AM FLOATING on a lovely warm, relaxing fragrant cloud of bliss after a Back, Face & Scalp treatment at The Beauty Room. I went for my treatment on a very chilly day and was looking forward to the warmth and restorative calm of the Beauty Room. My charming masseuse Marysia made me very comfortable in a warm room filled with candles, delicious scents and soothing music and I could feel myself relaxing the moment I walked in. The Back Face & Scalp treatment is very personalised and uses a broad range of ESPA products to target these three key areas. Marysia began by asking me what I wanted to feel like after my treatment. Relaxed, warm and rejuvenated was my aim, so she selected a couple of scented massage oils specifically created to do just that, and asked which appealed to me the most. I chose one with a heady mix of citrus, eucalyptus, almond oil, sweet orange and lavender.

ESPA offers 6 different massage oils, each one is designed to meet a specific need, such as relaxing muscles for those who play a lot of sport, and even one to help jet lag! She exfoliated my back with an invigorating salt crystal scrub, and then gave me the most wonderful massage. I could feel my stress melting away... The facial part of the treatment is designed to meet the needs of your own skin type, and Marysia noted that my skin was sensitive and a little dehydrated. She chose an oil to help smooth and nourish. As she worked she gave me lots of great advice, such as using a waterbased toner and not exfoliating more than three times a week. Next was a lifting and firming mud face mask, which was cool and refreshing, and while this was working its magic she gave me the most amazing head massage, using red clay with Vitamin C, watercress and apricot kernel. Sounds good enough to eat, but it was actually doing wonders to

December 2017/January 2018 Vanilla

condition my hair and strengthen my follicles. After removing the face mask she toned my skin, applied an eye serum and finally a moisturiser. My skin felt tingly, fresh – like it had been very well fed with good things. The finale was a fabulous arm and hand massage – definitely the perfect way to finish. This was one of the most pleasurable one-and-a-half hours I have ever spent on myself. Incredibly relaxing, calm, and indulgent, and delivered by such capable hands. As I got dressed and left the comforting womb of the treatment room I felt very peaceful and slightly light headed, as If I had been away to a wonderful place... ■ LUCY OHSTEN BACK, FACE & SCALP TREATMENT With hot stones/120 mins: £74 Without hot stones/90 mins:£62 The Beauty Room, 18 Princes Street, Norwich Call 01603 661161 to book

Knowles Dance & Fitness Studios, at White House Farm Barns, Salhouse Road, opened in February this year and now boasts 125 students. WELLBEING

Vanilla Skin cancer is on the rise, but there’s a local screening

SPECIAL REPORT

process which offers a life free of worry from the disease

I

T MIGHT surprise you that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK. Unfortunately, there is no NHS screening available, but 1 in 5 people will contract skin cancer and 2500 people lose their lives to it every year. The good news is that if it is caught early, it is curable, but if it is left too late, no cure exists. Anyone can get skin cancer, but one of the UK’s foremost experts on detecting the disease, Dr Deepak Rallan, who runs Diamond Skin Care’s SkinSafe clinic in Norwich and Gt Yarmouth, believes deaths are preventable and completely unnecessary. The SkinSafe clinic screening process is the most advanced route to a life free of worry from skin cancer.

HOW DO YOU SPOT THE SIGNS?

Skin cancer can start in a mole or appear on normal looking skin without a pre-existing mole. The majority of people will develop melanoma (the most dangerous form) on normal looking skin.

If you’ve had prolonged sun exposure, are over 40, have a new mole, or one that has changed shape, size and colour, then you need to get it checked. Early detection of skin cancer is crucial in being able to cure the condition. The process of consulting your doctor and potentially attending a hospital appointment can take up to 6 weeks. By contrast, a full body check appointment with a dermoscopy specialist can be made in Norwich or Gt. Yarmouth within three days.

The SkinSafe skin cancer check uses polarised light and advanced detection technology (dermoscopy). It is non-invasive but ‘looks’ under the surface of the skin. This method always catches any possible skin cancer at the curable stage. It produces instant, lasting peace of mind, keeps you safe even if you are most at risk, works at every age and for all skin types. Repeating the 3 steps once or twice a year ensures that no potential skin cancer will ever go un-noticed.

SPECIAL VANILLA READER OFFER For a limited time only, you can book a mole check at SkinSafe clinic for just £187 (normally £220, saving £33), by quoting offer code VM1117*. Book online at www.beskinsafe.co.uk, call 01603 819125 or email info@diamondskincare.co.uk *Offer ends 25th December 2017.

It can be eased. It’s pretty natural to feel anxious when facing a testing situation, such as unaccustomed

Irritation and anger is personal and different for everyone. Annoyance and frustration can blight people’s lives. HRISTMAS is coming and the stress is getting high...”. This could be a song. And then there is New Year and this is often a time for people to seek help about stress, anxiety, low mood, frustration or that nagging lack of fulfilment. So, when is a good time to seek help and who should be looking for help? Literally anyone can struggle with psychological tension or emotional worries. Most people wait too long and their issues become very entrenched. There are big issues like death, illness, redundancy and relationship breakdowns that might give us a longer and yet temporary period of fragility. This might be a good time to seek out talking therapy. Even without big issues most of us get low, worried or irritable from time to time and if that’s for a day or two, then that’s probably OK. If a period of emotional unrest becomes weeks, I would always advise people to see someone.

STYLE FILE

A bespoke look can be easily achieved using a Goblet Pleat

BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS

14. Curtain Headers There are many different types and style of headings for curtains and choosing the right one for the fabric and style of the room can make a huge difference to the overall look of the scheme: TRIPLE PINCH

For a more formal look – it is made up of three pleats grouped together and looks best with floor-length curtains as the fabric will hang in neat folds. Great for the dining room, living room and master bedrooms.

Eyelet headers - only for use on metal poles

TWIN PINCH

Slightly less formal and a more contemporary heading, comprising of two pleats and therefore using less fabric. Good if you want long curtains to hang in orderly folds but have a more relaxed feel. GOBLET

A bold formal pleat well suited for period properties and great for long curtains. The goblets can be contrast lined, or button details can be added, to really create a bespoke look. CARTRIDGE

Similar to the Goblet but without the nipped in neck at the base. The cylinder runs down from the pleat to create the fold in the curtains. It looks lovely with large patterned fabric.

The simple Pencil Pleat

EYELET

Eyelet curtains are often used at French windows or bi-fold doors because they hang in wide, loose folds and stack back easily. Available off the peg but can only be used on metal poles.

The formal Triple Pinch

PENCIL

The traditional standard heading for curtains and are nearly always seen on ready-mades as it fits all types of track and pole and most fabrics. The heading you choose will dictate the fullness of the curtain, and the quantity of fabric required. â—? For any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

With a wide range of local and independent food and drink, a dedicated wine and spirits area, a chocolate library and a gift box service where you can pick a carefully curated hamper or create your own, this is the place where Christmas wishes can come true.

One of the busiest periods for Norwich based ice cream manufacturer, Lakenham Creamery, is the approach to Christmas. Their Norfolk County Fresh Cream Ice Cream appears on dining tables across the region as an accompaniment to puddings, pies and cakes served throughout the festive season. Their Zabaglione ice cream is served alongside Panettone – fast becoming one of the nation’s favourite Christmas alternate puddings. Whilst their

Figbar at Home We love a good celebration at Figbar, and baking is always integral to that experience, but sometimes at home, our equipment goes missing! Here’s a top tip: use a clean wine bottle as a rolling pin if you don’t have one. And if you’re looking for one, visit us at the Norwich Market (Row B, Stall 50) where we have oven mitts full of all the baking equipment you’ll need this season – rolling pin included!

Apricot and Brandy makes a refreshing alternative to some of the heavier desserts and gives a luxurious but refreshing alternative to flavoured creams. Launched in 2016 their Spiced Orange and Cranberry is the essence of Winter condensed into a Sundae dish – if you haven’t experienced it yet, we’d urge you to give it a try. With a further 23 flavours to choose from, there will be a flavour to appeal to every member of the family!

FOOD

The

Vanilla Reader Review

I

’M OF THE opinion that if we want a restaurant scene in Norwich worth having, we have to get out there and support it. Folks that are actually making their own butter, from scratch, need our love. While most kitchens order it wrapped by the slab, such attention to detail and commitment to cooking is something we should be celebrating with a gin fizz and a round of applause. At Farmyard, they make the butter and consequently, everything else with exactly the same devotion. Devotion is one thing but great food needs skill and talent. We’re lucky that owner and Head Chef Andrew Jones has brought both home from that-there London. Andrew worked under the Michelin starred Richard Corrigan (Corrigan’s Mayfair) and Claude Bosi (Bibendum) before realising

88

his dream of Farmyard. The food is incredibly fresh. It’s local and it’s seasonal. We’ve been before and thoroughly enjoyed the a la carte menu. This time we visited during Norfolk Restaurant Week to check out the set menu. There were no compromises. The same careful thought and flair was evident throughout the prix fixe choices. The restaurant was buzzing but service was charming and attentive, exactly as it was the last time we stopped by. The brother-in-law will not be rushed whilst selecting his dinner so we snacked on olive and goats cheese bon bons, new to me and very moreish. Also, some salt cod croquettes that would make Spain proud. Farmyard works with a local vegetable supplier whose passion for everything borne of the ground has pushed the team to embrace all varieties and imagine new dishes and flavours. Like our starter, where the traditional taste of salmon and dill was pepped with Yuzu – a tart citrus fruit used in Japan and Korea. I will just put it out there, us vegetarians are tired of risotto,

They’re usually as bland as they sound. I never choose risotto, except when I’m here at Farmyard. Their spelt grain version with Jerusalem Artichoke, herbs and parmesan was delicious. The pork collar with pumpkin, sage and brown butter was enthusiastically received across the table. And can we just take a moment to appreciate the side dishes? Crunchy Gem lettuce hearts with a caesar dressing, perfect sweet potato with a chipotle dressing and crisp duck fat chips. But what ultimately, is the mark of a good restaurant? Probably that its customers enjoy their food. Maybe it’s chic to leave a little on ones plate but not on our table! All dishes were very nearly licked clean. A testament to Farmyard indeed. Dan Browning Head of School, Wymondham College

My City Life

county is brilliant for my two young daughters.

Welcome to the new Head of Wymondham College, Dan Browning who has moved to the county from Cyprus, with his wife and two young daughters.

Congratulations on your appointment. What drew you to the college and what ambitions do you have for it? Firstly, I feel honoured to be leading such a unique State Boarding School, in fact the biggest State boarding school in England. The opportunity to work in such a prestigious and high performing school was one that I could not possible pass up. I have been aware of Wymondham College for most of my career and always hoped that one day, I would be able to work here because of the focus on academic excellence but also the exceptionally rich extra-curricular offer that is integral to the daily life of our students; we are a school that believes in giving every opportunity to develop every student as a confident and well-rounded individual whether this be through involvement in sport, Combined Cadet Force or any of the other 65 clubs on offer weekly. Tell us a bit about your career path, what inspired you to go into education? I have been a history geek since I was 12 years old following a

Are there any particular things you would recommend doing in the city? I have already visited Norwich castle and am due to take some of our Year 7 students there in a few weeks’ time. It is a great window on the development of the city and local area and I would highly recommend a visit.

visit to a local museum. I always wanted to be a history teacher so that I could inspire others with my passion for learning from the past. Prior to moving to Norfolk, I was Executive Principal of King Richard and St John’s Schools which are part of the UK Ministry of Defence serving the needs of the military community in British Forces Cyprus. My role gave me an even deeper respect for our armed forces and their families. You are new to the area – what are your impressions of Norwich? I have family in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Lincolnshire, but this is the first time I have lived in Norfolk and I am loving it! Norwich is a bright, friendly and vibrant city and the huge number of places to visit in the

What do you like to do to relax? I enjoy reading and have just finished ‘Warriors’ by Max Hastings. It is a collection of inspiring stories about leadership throughout history. My children and new puppy love the local parks and it is great being outside as much as possible. We spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoors when we lived in Cyprus, but the heat could sometimes be rather too much, this hasn’t been an issues since moving to Norfolk! What is the best bit of advice you like to share with your pupils? Be kind and try your best. If you had £1 left in the whole world, how would you spend it? A lottery ticket!
