real lives

I think in the back of my mind, I was also a little bit envious that it wasn’t me who was going with the children, but I didn’t acknowledge that at the time – even to myself. That’s why, to begin with, I said I didn’t want Keith to take them. He got angry and, for the first time since we’d separated, our parental relationship broke down. I didn’t know where to turn – I was confused about my feelings and not sure what to do. I talked with friends, but that didn’t really help. Nobody was able to tell me whether there was legally anything I could do to stop Keith taking our children abroad and so I felt it best to seek professional advice. Barker Gotelee had helped me through my divorce and the original contact negotiations, so I knew that Nicola Furmston and Amanda Crowe in the family department would be well placed to help me.

M

eeting with Amanda was such a relief. We talked through my fears and everything started to feel much easier. We went over the facts and Amanda explained to me that, legally, as we both have parental responsibility, Keith is allowed to take the children overseas for a short holiday. Discussing things with Amanda made me realise that the holiday would be in the boys’ best interests, and that having a week to myself would allow me to rest too. Keith has always been a dedicated father and I knew he would never do anything to jeopardise their wellbeing.

What I didn’t know, however, was how to do an about turn on my initial reaction – especially as Keith and I were now reduced to talking via text message! Amanda and I agreed that she would send a letter to Keith, explaining my fears and also suggesting that the two of us should meet to formalise a new agreement that would take holidays abroad into account. She advised me that if I did not feel comfortable seeing Keith alone, this meeting could be done through mediation, and that the mediator would be there to try and help us both reach an agreement that was in the best interests for the children. Very helpfully, she also advised me on a few steps to take to make sure that I was prepared for the meeting and for my next encounter with Keith.

Keith agreed to mediation and after a couple of sessions with the mediator we agreed an updated contact plan to include holidays abroad. Keith and I are back on good speaking terms, and have even had a couple of afternoons together with the boys to discuss the details of the holiday and make sure they’re happy with the plans too. They are now hugely excited and can’t wait to go to Lapland with their dad. As for Keith and I, we can now move forwards with cooperatively doing the best for them. Making contact with Barker Gotelee and meeting with Amanda again was definitely a positive step for all of us – it certainly didn’t cost the earth and yet has made a whole world of difference n

Beauty

your beauty questions solved ...by Sue Carter at Image Salon

I'm confused and frustrated with all the different face creams on the market HELP ! It can be daunting as there are so many face creams to choose from. The key is to ensure that you know your skin type/skin condition. If unsure, seek advice from a skin specialist. They will be able to advise you and recommend a cream that best suits you. They will also advise you on other products to fit into your skin routine. Specialists should be more than willing to provide you with samples to try before you buy, ensuring you are happy with the product before you invest. I have never been into a beauty salon before and (this might sound silly) I am nervous to go as I dont have much self confidence... We understand it can be quite daunting to go into a beauty salon for the first time, as you are not sure what to expect, how to act or how friendly the staff may be. It may be a good idea to ask family or friends if they are able to recommend a beauty salon that they have used, and they will be able to let you know what to expect, making you feel more at ease when you first visit. Perhaps research the salon prior to your visit by

58

looking at their website, reviews or maybe call them to ask what the treatment involves so that you have an idea of what to expect before you arrive. By the time you have your treatment your fears will have faded, you will wonder why you were anxious and nervous and look forward to your next appointment. I have just come back from holiday and the skin on my face is tanned but patchy. what can i do to help get rid of it? This sounds like pigmentation – it is a very common skin condition and can be caused by over exposure of the sun, pregnancy and hormones. It is very important to wear at least a factor 30 on your face every day and when you are abroad I would up that to a factor 50 and wear a hat. There are many products and treatments on the market that will help to reduce the appearance but unfortunately not get rid of the pigmentation permanently. It is also worth seeking advice on the best products and treatments. Laser facials will work deeper into the epidermis than a hands-on facial so this may help. Do i really need to wash my make-up brushes? Yes. Washing your make-up brushes once a month is ideal, as this will relieve all the bacteria that builds up on the brushes and will also allow your make-up to glide on more evenly. Gently dip the ends of your brushes in warm water and massage either a make-up brush cleanser or baby shampoo (this is gentle and won't disturb the bristles or your skin) then rinse again with warm, and leave them to dry on a towel. n

homes

1. Light colours

Choose light colours to make a small/dark room feel bigger and brighter. 2. Be adventurous!

However, don’t be afraid of colour, which can also create some unique effects and environments in your home. 3. Don't compromise

See tiles as an investment, not a cost; never compromise on quality, which can still be picked up at great prices. Tile shades, surface finish and tile patterns vary. It is recommended that you see, touch and feel a full tile sample in your home setting before you finalise your selection. 4. Plan ahead

Always purchase an additional 5-10% more tiles than you actually need. This allows you (or the tiler) to compensate for cuts and breakages and ensures you have the same batch/shade should you have needed additional tiles. Most companies will offer a refund on unused boxes of tiles. Purchase high quality tile trims that are sufficiently wide to accommodate both the tile and a layer of tile adhesive. 5. Blend in grout lines

Choose a tile grout colour that compliments your tiles. Always use high quality adhesives and impervious non-pigmented grouts. Where joints are not completely watertight moisture can be absorbed into the tile body causing stains to show through the glaze.

72

2014 home improvements

Tiling Tips by Ipswich Bathroom & Tile Centre

6. Bigger is not always better

If your wall or floor will require a lot of tile cuts (i.e. around fixtures/fittings), choose smaller tiles to give a better flow. Check for uneven floors and rectify with levelling screeds. 7. Use borders and decors

Add extra interest by breaking up your wall tiling with border tiles, decors and metallic listellos. 8. Check the suitability

Need floor tiles? Make sure you check that the floor tile wear rating (PEI rating) is suitable for your intended area/use. A similar question you may need to ask is do you need ceramic or porcelain tiles? Porcelain tiles are suitable for outdoors and domestic floors where heavy traffic/abrasion is anticipated. 9. Maintenance – get the right advice

If you are purchasing natural stone tiles (i.e. travertine, marble, slate), make sure you get the right advice for sealing and treating the tiles before and after fixing. Always use apply grout protector to the grout lines. This will protect grout against greasy dirt and spots and makes cleaning easier. 10. Don't be afraid to ask for advice

Don’t be afraid to ask sales assistants for advice; they will be fully trained to answer all your queries and may bring to your attention things you may not have otherwise considered. Vanilla December 2013/January 2014
