1-10 JUNE

❯❯ TAKE THE PLUNGE AT THE GREAT EAST SWIM Location: Alton Water, Holbrook Date: Saturday 17th June 2017

Over two thousand people of all ages and abilities regularly take the plunge at the Great East swim, which offers everyone the opportunity to take part – from first timers, to veteran open water aficionados. Distances range from a 250m kids swim right up to the marathon 10k swim, and this year sees the first ever Great East SwimRun event. This exciting new event combines the best of both land and open water, and in teams of two, competitors take on a total distance of just over 11k, split into 4 swims and 3 runs. The Great East Swim is also a great day out for supporters with a wide choice of food stalls, local produce and crafts in the farmer’s market which runs alongside the event.

10 days of inspirational contemporary theatre presented in Ipswich.

JUNE SATURDAY 17 The first swim takes place at 8am.For more information on the timings throughout the day visit www.greatswim.org/east

newsonthestreet Get ready for a fun-filled Summer

Returning for its 17th year, this 10 day festival offers a bright and inspiring snapshot of contemporary theatre with established and emerging artists, both local and those from further afield. There’s comedy, politics, music, animation, puppets, pop icons, antique dealers off the telly, autobiographical material and the downright fantastical – a few shows that look at the theme of death and, in turn, the lives it leaves behind. Tickets can be booked by contacting the Ticket Sales team on 01473 295900 or by visiting the website at www.wolseytheatre.co.uk

There will be a wide range of local, national and international jazz artistes to see – ranging from the young and up-and-coming to the more established and well-known – all packed into a summer weekend. There are also workshops for local amateur musicians, local jazz bands in pubs, an art show, a Lindy Hop dance workshop and jazz-themed films. Many of these events are free, and the organisers have kept ticket prices as low as possible. For more details and to book tickets: www.ipswichjazzfestival.org.uk

Cake & Catwalk Lynn’s Summer musings... It’s back.. but for most of us it never went away... THE WHITE SHIRT. I recommend a fresh one every year unless you are wonder wash woman who can get her whites whiter than other mortals. They have got bigger, wider, cuffier and more dramatic this year, so check them out. If you have got thinnish legs (and even the bigger amongst us can be hefty up top and leaner below) they look great and really accentuate your best attributes. If you are heavier below, do not go too wide, buy a classic boyfriend cut with a longer length. When, and if, this weather cheers up they look great with a good pair of jeans, cut offs, cigarette pants and even culottes. Simple, fresh and no fuss. If a jacket is required get out the blazer. Try to veer away from black bottoms, as you could look like a waitress plus it’s a good excuse to purge ourselves of our favourite colour. LYNN TURNER

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

Walking the Walk!

I

REGULARLY get told, no matter how large or small, skinny or wide, young or old you are, a female can never have enough shoes! I guess the same applies to handbags and I have to say never was a truer word spoken. As I write today, the sun is shining and the Market Hill, in the centre of Woodbridge Town, is delightfully full of people cheering on their friends and relatives in the annual Woodbridge 10k race. It's a really lovely tradition enjoyed by the Town for many years but I can't begin to imagine the importance of a seriously comfortable pair of running shoes! You could be on top athletic form, drug free, with the wind behind you, but without the all important footwear, your hours of dedicated training could be dashed! The same can be said for most events in our daily lives. We are celebrating 790 years this year of Woodbridge being given its Market status with the re-instating of the weekly Market back to its original home on the Market Hill, hoorah!! It might mean a bit more of a walk from various parking spots, which is no problem at all if you are, once again, wearing the correct shoes. This season is awash with

24

wonderful options, with a flat-form espadrille making a very strong appearance. It's a sensible, comfortable, fashion no brainer in a range of delicious colours from watermelon oranges through to sizzling metallics. There are also some yummy pumps with a thicker sole to put a spring in your step, and keeping your look bang on track.

T

hose of you needing a more practical work shoe can rely on a block heel for added comfort and a better grip of the planet, and the wedding brigade are well covered as wedges are still making a strong

appearance, reassuring if you're walking on grass, or the sexy little kitten heel for those on firmer ground. In conclusion, making the correct choice of footwear is one of the first decisions we make on a daily basis and it facilitates the smooth running of the journey ahead. Which is partly why a girl just can't get enough of the shoe department, we need an extensive selection, and, if we actually need a reason to justify a footwear purchase, shoes (thankfully) do wear out!! â– Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden and Colchester

“I wanted to make sure that Mum got the very best care available and not lose every penny she’d worked so hard for”

Helping Mum get a fair deal on care MY PROBLEM: My mum, Elsie, broke her hip a few months ago and was rushed to hospital. It was a scary and difficult time for both of us, and, when the hospital said that mum would need to go into full-time care, I was uncertain about what to do next. The hospital was pressuring me to make a decision, but I wanted to make sure that mum got the very best care available and, at the same time, not lose every penny she’d worked so hard for in her life. I was determined to do the right thing for her. PAM, IPSWICH

32

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

My dad passed away several years ago, which left poor Mum reeling. He’d tied up very little legally and so sorting out his estate was a nightmare. I wanted to be much better prepared with regards to Mum and thought it a good idea to speak to Barker Gotelee, who had prepared Mum’s Will and, thankfully, Lasting Power of Attorney a few months ago. I met with Ann-Marie Matthews, and instantly, I was relieved that I’d chosen to seek legal advice. I explained how worried I was that the hospital had said Mum needed to go into care and I had no idea what my options were. Vanilla June/July 2017

REAL LIVES

A

NN-MARIE was so kind and helpful. As we chatted, she explained that she could help formulate a plan to be sure Mum had the best care for her and maximise her income so as to protect her assets. I had no idea how much a care home would cost or what benefits Mum might be entitled to, so really didn’t have a clue what level of income we would need to support her. As AnnMarie and I talked, I realised that Mum actually had some good sources of income. There was her own pension; a small widow’s pension from Dad, some savings and even an investment that I hadn’t known existed.

“Thanks to Ann-Marie’s advice, I’m confident that Mum has the financial support she needs” Ann-Marie suggested that it might be a good idea to rent Mum’s house so as to receive an income from it rather than needing to sell. After adding everything up, I was delighted to learn that my biggest fear – telling mum we’d have to sell her house – wouldn’t have to happen. Now, we could set about finding her a really lovely care home.

June/July 2017 Vanilla

F

ORTUNATELY, Mum was quite organised and so I’d been able to take a great deal of necessary documents with me. Ann-Marie started to fill out the relevant forms in order to claim the benefits Mum was entitled to. It was such a relief to get things moving. I cannot recommend AnnMarie highly enough – she was a fantastic source of advice and support. Not only did she have the most up-to-date records of all care homes in the area, she was able to share information about different places based on real-life experiences from other families.

It was clearly an emotional time for my family and so I relied heavily on Ann-Marie to support me through it. She, basically, did everything except take mum to the care home. I can’t put into words how helpful this was. All I wanted was to be at Mum’s side, and, thanks to Barker Gotelee, I was able to do that. Ann-Marie advised me to keep in touch and let her know if circumstances change in any way as there are other sources of funding that may be applicable. With Ann-Marie and the team at my side, I feel much more relaxed about what the future holds. ■

Father and daughter team: Dr Andrius Pocius and Dr Lina Strachan

PROF

HAPPY BIRTHDAY A&L!

Dr Andrius (Andrew) Pocius and Dr Lina Strachan are a father/daughter combo that are a force to be reckoned with as their business, A&L Clinics, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. WHAT INSPIRED YOU BOTH TO GET INTO YOUR PROSPECTIVE FIELDS? A: My parents wanted me to be

a doctor but I always knew that I wanted to be a dentist. I was lucky in that I didn’t have any problems with my teeth when I was growing up and so I try and

34

make sure that my patients don’t have any problems either. L: I do less dentistry now as I'm focusing more on facial aesthetics. I graduated as a dentist from Kaunas University of Medicine in Lithuania in 2003 and I came to the UK in 2007 when the surgery opened. That

is when I got into facial aesthetics and began my training – starting with simple botox procedures and progressing from there. There’s always innovations in the world of aesthetics so it’s a very exciting field to work in. It’s life-changing for my patients too, seeing their

transformations and the confidence that they gain after treatment. It’s very heartwarming. WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE FIELD OF DENTISTRY AND FACIAL AESTHETICS OVER THE YEARS? A: The dental problems I see

now are different from what they used to be. Due to modern toothpastes, that make the outer enamel very strong, a tooth can look fine on the outside but may be decaying inside, so the problems are not always visible. It’s possible for bacteria to get through a small hole and cause fundamental problems. L: The techniques that I learnt ten years ago in aesthetics are not so relevant now as new and better treatments have evolved. Believe it or not, there are fashions in aesthetics too. We used to focus on single areas of the face but now we like to treat the face as a whole. We seek balance across the face and the results are a lot softer and subtle. I also teach other medical practitioners at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, which is particularly rewarding for me. LINA, YOU HAVE WON A NUMBER OF AWARDS FOR YOUR FACIAL AESTHETICS WORK. HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU WON? L: It was great to win of course

but it hasn’t stopped me from wanting to improve. This job is not just 9-5, I am constantly

keeping up-to-date with what’s out there – exploring new techniques and treatments and working out what would be good for my clients.

YOU ARE ORIGINALLY FROM LITHUANIA SO I AM INTERESTED IN HOW YOU CAME TO SETTLE IN IPSWICH? A: I knew the Suffolk area as I

MANY PEOPLE MUST BE NERVOUS WHEN THEY COME IN FOR A PROCEDURE AT A&L CLINICS, HOW DO YOU PUT THEM AT EASE? A: We have a lot of people

had visited family members, so I knew I liked it and that I would like to make my home here. L: After dad started the business here we thought it would a great opportunity for me to work alongside him in the business, the rest as they say, is history.

that come to us because we offer conscious sedation. There are many patients that really can’t make themselves comfortable and having some form of sedation means they can undergo procedures without any stress or trauma. L: It is so important to put patients at ease. They tell me their needs and concerns and I always give them honest advice so they know what to expect and we can get the best results. We are really friendly here – a laid back small business and like to keep it very personal. We know all about our patients... about their families, pets and work-life. We always make sure they are monitored and feel comfortable at all times.

Doors June/July 2017 Vanilla

IT IS YOUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY ON 17TH JUNE HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CELEBRATE IT? A: I’m sure we will find some

way of celebrating! We are a small team, so we are very close. No doubt they have made the plans already... I'll probably be told what we are doing! FOR MORE INFORMATION on treatments and pricing visit www.aandlclinics.com or call 01473 287762

We are both in the salon throughout the week to enable us to grow relationships with our clients. What treatments are on offer at the salon?

Clair and Emma, how have things been going since you took over Flawless Image? Emma: We took over the salon

on 1st December last year and things are going great! It’s been a crazy six months but we're certainly getting into the swing of things. We have an amazing team of therapists and our clients have been incredibly supportive over the transitional period and we have lots of ideas to build the business further. How did you both end up going into business together? Emma: Clair used to be one of my

clients at my other beauty salon – Little Luxuries in Kesgrave which

I co-own. She was previously a beauty therapist and hairdresser before becoming a music teacher and she wanted to get back into beauty. So, after some refresher training, Clair became a parttime beauty therapist at Little Luxuries. A couple of years later we discussed the possibility of us working together in a new venture. I had already viewed Flawless Image so I asked Clair to view the salon and the rest is history! What do you think is the secret to a successful business? Clair: The key to a successful

business is our team and our clients. By continuing to support and grow the team we know we

ith the beauty industry booming at the moment, there’s also a lot of competition to provide the best treatments at value for money prices which is great for us, the clients, but it does mean the salons and clinics are kept on their beautifully manicured toes! New kid on the block is the New You Clinic, and can be found on St Matthews Street, Ipswich, tucked behind the Solaris tanning salon. Karolina, the owner, has a dynamic approach, despite being heavily pregnant with her second child. She has sought out the best state-of-the-art technology

44

Hi-tech: Karolina and Kitija with Alma Soprano Ice and 3D Lipo Ultimate machines

and is already making a name for herself on the local beauty scene. New You offers the impressive, top-of-the-range Soprano Ice laser hair removal system – thought by many to be the most effective laser hair removal solution available as it’s virtually pain-free and successful on a vast range of skin types and hair colours. They also offer the celebrity endorsed Geneo+ Super Facials. The hi-tech machine has two treatment heads; one exfoliates, massages, and releases carbon dioxide bubbles that help transport active ingredients into

the skin. The second delivers skin cell-heating radiofrequency waves, proven to stimulate collagen production. The promise: smoother, tighter skin after six weekly treatments and Karolina tells us they are getting great results. This Summer they will be bringing onboard a LipofirmPLUS device to supplement their 3D Lipo Ultimate machine. Both are market-leading technologies for HIFU face and body sculpting – currently the most sought after lifting treatment for face, neck and body. They need it, as they can hardly keep up with demand for the treatments.

COACH

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective Q: I over think everything and get so stressed. What can I do? WHAT IS HIFU? High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) also known as the ‘Ultrasound Facelift’ has become one of the most talked about and sought after lifting treatments for the face and neck and is poised to take the beauty world by storm. You only need one session to deliver visible effects in lifting and tightening. It works by stimulating new collagen production so it takes a few months for the full results to show. Individually it targets brow, jowl and neck lifting, as well as overall skin tightening and rejuvenation. You will see a noticeable improvement in facial contouring, fine lines and wrinkles. Only one session allowed each year!

Karolina’s ambitions don’t stop here. She's already looking for new bigger premises so she can expand her range of treatments and keep up with client demand. A: This is something most of us are guilty of and is a total waste of time, particularly as the worries rarely come to fruition. Think of yourself as being made up of three parts; your thoughts, your behaviour and your physiology. These three parts are all linked together, when one is used, the other two get involved. IMPORTANT: If we think of something frightening, sad or happy, whether it is real or imagined, we will get physiological reactions, which are similar to those we would have had, if the event had actually happened. Yes – you did read that right. This is why we must be so careful about what we think. Here is a recipe of common thinking errors that we use that keep us unhappy: Firstly, take some ‘all or nothing’ thinking (black or white with no shades of grey). Don’t forget to ‘discount the positives’; just carry on thinking about the negative options. Add to this ‘mind reading’ and ‘fortune telling’ (think you know exactly what people are thinking and what will happen). Follow with ‘catastrophes’ and predict the worst that can happen. Sprinkle in some ‘shoulds’, ‘musts’ and ‘oughts’ to add extra pressure on yourself and use negative ‘labelling’ of others, ourselves and the World in general. Finally add in ‘over thinking’ and leave until despair sets in! But seriously, be aware of the thinking errors that you do. As you catch yourself using them, you can change them for more realistic, positive alternatives...

When is a Massage, not just a Massage? When it is a brand new Massage at Ufford Park Spa!

I

N A SURVEY carried out by the Good Spa Guide, ninety per cent of respondents said they would choose to have a massage over any other treatment during a spa visit. At Ufford Park, their own figures support that finding, with their signature massage, the Raindrop Massage being the most popular amongst customers. This year however, senior members from the Ufford Park Spa team have joined with a team of fellow Spa Managers and Head Therapists across the Mosaic Group, putting their heads (and hands) together, with the guidance and expertise of Chartered Physiotherapist Marc Piper, to create a new holistic Mosaic Massage to add to their core treatment menus.

June/July 2017 Vanilla

Now in the final stages of development, the Magic of The East Massage is being designed to entwine the healing properties of the East with traditional Western massage techniques, and is based around traditional Chinese acupuncture points that are known to calm the spirit and promote feelings of wellbeing.

P

HYSIOTHERAPIST Marc Piper explained “I think it is the perfect combination of stimulation and relaxation. Using pressure over traditional acupuncture points that lie within the larger muscle groups, the new Magic of The East Massage stimulates local blood flow to reduce muscle tension, whilst gently soothing both body and mind, leaving you feeling both calmer and more relaxed.”

Currently undergoing training ready for the launch, the Ufford Park Spa team are looking forward to delivering this treatment with their luxurious body oils and unique finishing touches. The Magic of the East Massage will be totally distinctive, offering a very relaxing, results-driven and beneficial acupuncture massage. Keep your eyes open for the launch!

TO BOOK The Magic of the East Massage costs £35 for a 30 minute treatment and will be available from 1st June 2017. To book call Ufford Park Health & Spa on 01394 386871 For more info visit www.uffordparkspa.co.uk.

FAREWELL TO FLAB

Could Ultrasound Cavitation technology at Scultura Clinic be the answer?

A

fter three C-sections and an incisional hernia my stomach muscles are shot to bits despite exercising on a fairly regular basis I can’t shift the flab around that area. This seems to be the case with many women who, despite eating a healthy diet and exercising, can’t tone and tighten their stomachs. They spend their lives trying to hide it which can definitely affect their self esteem. Well listen ladies... there is help and support out there. Say hello to Ultrasonic Cavitation and Radio Frequency! Situated at Mendlesham, the Scultura Clinic offers body and

face contouring, helping you to achieve a look for yourself you are happy with. Headed by Dr Raj Tanna, the clinic offers non-invasive, medically-proven LipofirmPLUS technology for men and women. LipofirmPLUS treatments reshape your body, helping to firm, tone, tighten, sculpt and reduce those stubborn areas where exercise and dieting is not effective. Dr Tanna thoroughly researches new technologies and selected LipofirmPLUS for the clinic, as he is convinced it produces the best results. The good news is: treatment

is non-invasive so doesn’t involve surgery. The clinic’s therapists – Cheryl, Clementine and Dionne – are very experienced, trustworthy and credible and make you feel safe and secure in a professional, comfortable, friendly environment. THE SCIENCE

A combination of Radio Frequency and Ultrasonic Cavitation is used to remove fat and to tighten the skin, resulting in inch reduction. Ultrasonic Cavitation is a revolutionary new approach to fat reduction that does not involve surgery or

You will be measured at your consultation so you will be able to see how many inches you have lost by the final session, aided by before and after photographs. WHO CAN BENEFIT?

AFTER

DOES IT WORK? The Scultura Clinic believe that LipofirmPLUS technology is the best body contouring treatment available. Results vary from person to person and will be greatly improved with your own commitment. Usually 8 sessions are recommended but improvements can be felt straight away and some clients have achieved 1-2 inches of loss around the tummy area after just one treatment. invasive procedures and is an effective alternative treatment to liposuction. It works by targeting and destroying fat cells without damaging any other tissues or organs. The fat released from the cells is transported to the liver and processed in the same way as fat from the diet, so it helps to stick to a low calorie diet and maintain activity levels particularly on the day of the treatment. Fat cells take up to two years to regenerate, so the effect of the treatment is long term and can be maintained with minimal topup treatments. Radio frequency boosts collagen levels over 3-6 months and the effect can last for up to 2 years, but this will vary depending on your lifestyle.

June/July 2017 Vanilla

THE EXPERIENCE

This treatment is not uncomfortable or painful but soothing and relaxing. A slight tingling sensation might be felt along with a high pitched sound which becomes hardly noticeable after a few minutes. There is also a slight pressure on the stomach as the handpiece moves over it. The skin temperature is constantly monitored as the radio frequency causes a warm sensation on the surface of the skin as the deep layers are gradually heated. You might notice some redness, this will disappear as the skin cools, usually within the hour. After a course of sessions, the area will look more toned, tightened, smoothed and contoured.

Anyone who wants to treat their most troublesome areas. You might be post pregnancy or menopausal, a bride to be, or perhaps you are going on holiday and want the confidence to wear that bikini? Some people, who don’t have a healthy diet or indulge in exercise, find a kick start helps change their lifestyle. There are others who have a flabby stomach they can’t shift, despite eating a good diet and exercising on a regular basis. A therapist will discuss with you what you wish to achieve from the treatments. Usually eight sessions are recommended but you should start to see and feel improvements straight away. Using Ultrasound Cavitation, the clinic have achieved 1-2 inches of loss around the tummy area after just one treatment. There are some medical conditions that may prevent treatment, but a therapist will address this at the first consultation and any issues flagged up will be referred to Dr Tanna, who always ensures that the procedures are safe and professionally delivered. n Sessions: 60 minutes, a fortnightly course of 8 is recommended Cost: £57 per session. Callus Peel foot treatment at The Pink Shed Beauty at Brantham

I

t might be the sandal season but as I suffer from hard skin and cracked heels, which can be painful and unsightly, I need regular pedicures to keep my feet presentable. This is why I was only too happy to test drive the Callus Peel treatment at The Pink Shed at Brantham. Callus Peel is a luxury spa foot treatment that removes hard, callused skin and promises to leave your feet feeling soft and revitalised. I can’t wait! In the tranquil setting of this lovely new salon overlooking the River Stour, I relaxed back into their mammoth pedicure station, and allowed my hard-worked feet to have a complete overhaul.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Pink Shed’s owner, superfriendly, Natalie (pictured above) applied pads, which are soaked

50

in the peel solution, to the badly affected parts of your feet. Your feet are secured inside poly bags (the warmth helps the peel to work) and they are then treated to 10 minutes in warmed booties. I was offered a tea or coffee and magazine at this point so I could sit back and relax while the peel did its thing! I’d been warned it might tingle a little, but felt nothing. The peel loosens the bonds between dead skin cells making them easy to scrape off with a scraper. This gentle process didn’t hurt a bit, in fact, it tickled and it really amazed me the amount of dead skin that is removed! Any remaining peel is wiped off and then the soles of my feet were filed to remove any lingering hard skin. To finish, I received a relaxing foot massage using a special moisturising balm.

See p55 for a Reader Offer

THE RESULT

The Callus Peel treatment took less than half an hour and afterwards my feet felt baby soft and as recommended I had a second Callus Peel a few weeks later; my feet are now amazing. It's great value for money and I will definitely will go back. FINISHING TOUCHES

Your treatment needn’t end with the massage. The Pink Shed will happily combine this treatment with polish or gelish for toes or add it on to a massage of your choice. Callus Peel (30 mins) £19; Callus Peel & polish (40 mins) £26; Callus Peel & gelish (50 mins) £37. ● Call 01473 515129 or visit www.thepinkshedbeauty.co.uk The Pink Shed Beauty, 9 Court Farm, Brantham CO11 1PW

SUFFOLK MEDICAL CLINIC

HE WORLD of facial aesthetics used to belong to the rich and famous but these days, treatments like Botox and fillers are, for many, as much a part of life as getting highlights or having a pedicure. The truth is, we all like to look our best and nowadays it is possible to find treatments locally that will help roll back the years. Suffolk Medical Clinic in Boxford has been making facial aesthetic treatments accessible

52

to the masses for nearly 20 years. Dr. Anthony O’Neill left General Practice in 2008, having recognised the growing demand for these treatments. Together with his wife, Registered Nurse, Jenny, they opened the clinic on Boxford high street in 1999 and now also run satellite clinics in Woodbridge and Bury St Edmunds. Initially, the clinic mainly offered Botox and filler treatments but they have since

This year, Suffolk Medical Clinic won a WhatClinic award for excellent Customer Service for the third year running. This is an amazing achievement for a small rural clinic, considering the competition from other far larger clinics across the country, and proves that a rural location doesn’t mean you can’t provide top-level service.

I

N FACT, it is this top-level service that Anthony and Jenny think is at the root of the clinic’s success and longevity. “We have always put our customers first – remembering clients’ names and what they have been up to – it all makes a difference and lets people know they are welcome and valued.” But with so much in the press these days about rogue practitioners; hairdressers dabbling in a little Botox on the Vanilla June/July 2017

side and people even holding ‘Botox parties’, how do Jenny and Anthony reassure their clients that these treatments are safe? “Well, being a qualified doctor and nurse, we obviously understand the anatomy of the face: we know exactly what lies beneath the surface of the skin so are not just pointing a needle and shooting at random areas, which can be the case with practitioners who don’t have a medical background” said Jenny. “We also have two decades of experience behind us and many of our clients have been with us since the beginning – that speaks volumes, I think.”

reassuring clients that a clinic is reputable and safe. All treatments at Suffolk Medical Clinic begin with an initial consultation to assess client needs and to work out which course of treatment will get the best results. If the feedback is anything to go by, this clinic has a very loyal following and the majority of customers return time and time again, so happy are they with the results they see. YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED

...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

IS IT SAFE TO LINE THE INNER RIMS OF YOUR EYES?

Yes it is safe to use eyeliner on the inner rims (wet line) of your eyes but there are two things to bear in mind. One is to be careful so you don’t poke yourself in the eye and the second is, it is easy to contaminate your liner if you have a eye infection. This doesn’t mean you can't still apply the eyeliner, just always sharpen the pencil after using it if you have a eye infection and this way, you’ll always have a liner in pristine condition. Here are some tips to get the right look: Wide-set eyes? Take the colour all the way into the inner corner. Close-set eyes? Leave the inner corners bare and concentrate more in the middle to outer corners. Over 40? You absolutely still can rock this look, but looks softer when some of it has actually worn off a bit, so that it adds just a bit of definition. Watery and sensitive eyes? Avoid lining rims as it might end up irritating them. Always throw out the liner if you have a serious eye infection to avoid recontamination.

SOME CREAMS COME WITH A THIN PLASTIC LID UNDER THE COVER. SHOULD I KEEP IT OR GET RID ?

This thin plastic is doing a job. The seal helps block out light and air that can break down the active ingredients in your creams – the more air the less active your cream becomes. Usually this type of packaging comes with a small spatular to use dip into your product. Use the spatular every time as it will prevent bacteria getting into your cream, which once again will diminish the shelf life of your product. Your creams will last longer and be more effective if you store them in a cool, dark place. CAN I MIX BRANDS WITHOUT COMPROMISING THEIR EFFECTIVENESS?

It’s a beauty jungle out there, and it can be confusing sometimes as to whether you have to solely use one brand or whether you can mix brands. Good news – it’s totally fine to mix brands. It is, however, really important to understand what’s in the products and the strength of them e.g. You wouldn’t want to be using three different products all containing glycolic acid as this would mean the skin is receiving very high amounts of the acid and might become red and irritated. But mixing allows you to really tailor your skincare and ensure that you are using the best suited products for your skin’s needs. I always have two or three brands on the go at once. n

The family business is run by Chris Bixby and his partner Rachel Worobec, both former police officers, who work alongside Chris’s mum Karen and cousin Alex. “Flooring is our speciality and we understand that the right carpet, vinyl or Karndean flooring can transform a home or office. People often need expert guidance about which product will work best for their space, and this is where our superb level of customer service sets us apart.

64

“We have a highly trained, specialist team at our showroom who can offer customers impartial and honest advice about products, colours and styles, floor preparation and fitting, from conception to completion. We work within budget requirements and can undertake any project, large or small. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for the customer to find exactly what they are looking for and achieve the most stylish or practical flooring solution. “We have an impressive range of high quality products to choose from, which are on display at our showroom, so customers can always find something to suit their needs and pocket. But our prices are competitive, which means we can deliver value without compromise. If customers can’t come to us, we often visit them with samples and swatches in

their office or home. “Workmanship is also key to what sets us apart. We are very proud of our team of expert fitters, all qualified to the highest standard and employed by us full time. They are always professional, tidy, and cause minimal disruption, which is so important when you are working in someone else’s property.” So what do customers want from flooring these days? “We are seeing a lot more patterned carpets in funky, quirky and geometric patterns as statements for stairs or snugs,” Chris adds. “Luxury vinyl tiles, such as Karndean and Distinctive Flooring are very popular now, because the quality is superb, it’s very easy to maintain, and it comes in both sheets and tiles. “Bespoke design floor panels are also coming into fashion. These can be used under a dining room table or in a kitchen to create a focal point contrasting a tile and wood effect floor together.” ● Check Facebook and

FOOD

TheFoodie HODMEDOD NOMINATED FOR AWARD

Halesworth-based Hodmedod, pioneers of Britishgrown beans, pulses and grains, has reached the finals of the BBC’s prestigious Food & Farming Awards. Hodmedod, is one of three food producers to be finalists for the Best Food Producer Award which celebrates producers who “enrich our lives and local economies.” The winners were due to be announced on June 8th, but this has been postponed due to the General Election, so Hodmedod and other finalists will have to wait until September to find out whether or not they’ve won.

ABOUT HODMEDOD Hodmedod was founded in 2012 by Nick Saltmarsh, Josiah Meldrum and William Hudson after they realised the absurdity of the British relationship with pulses: most of the UK’s beans are exported to the Middle East and Northern Africa, while most of the pulses consumed in the UK are imported from abroad. They decided

June/July 2017 Vanilla

to do something about it, and started working with local producers of fava beans, a bean which has been grown in Britain since the Iron Age but little eaten here in recent centuries. After successfully bringing British-grown Fava beans to the market, they started to explore other British varieties of beans and peas, as well as cereals like quinoa and grains like naked barley.

SEAWEED SUPERFOOD TREND

Seamore's founder mistook seaweed for pasta, loved the experience and decided to fool the rest of the world with 'I Sea Pasta'. Seaweed is considered the most sustainable food on the planet. It only requires sunshine to grow. No fresh water, land, fertiliser or pesticides. Seamore harvest their seaweed from two sites, Ireland and Brittany in France. Species include “Himantalia” and “Dulce”, they require very little to thrive, and only 15% is harvested at a time, allowing all seaweed to grow back, without disturbing its natural habitat.

The seaweed tagliatelle can be used in the same way as you use pasta - see the gorgeous recipe picture below. The new ‘I Sea Bacon’, can be put on anything that deserves a crunchy, salty, smoky kick. You can even fry the leaves and they will turn into (green) bacon! It's available in some Wholefood stores but you can also buy it online at: seamorefood.com/iseapasta

The Crown at Woodbridge The

Vanilla Reader Review

T

HE Crown at Woodbridge is a fabulous host of interconnecting rooms, an old inn refreshingly decorated in a modern style, with nods to the river nearby. The exciting, new terrace outside is beautiful, wrapped in panels of reed, placing sofas and sharing spaces just so to create the perfect atmosphere for hot summer evenings and balmy long lunches. The Crown’s glorious gin menu is a delight. Go for one of Adnams’ locally-concocted perfections – Copper House or First Rate are superb, or wander further afield with the boutique German gin, Monkey 47 or the lush Warner Edward Rhubarb Gin – gorgeous with a lot of ice and a Fevertree tonic for summer sipping on the terrace. There’s also an extensive cocktail menu – fizz cocktails, like Kir Royale, Mimosa or Bellini and a range of clever martinis – chocolate, apple, watermelon – even the ‘sophisticate’ martini – with Golovkine vodka, June/July 2017 Vanilla

ATING at the Crown is a treat. With Adnams sourdough bread and marinated olives to hand, choosing from the menu is more of a task. The starters are clever and flavoursome and very, very local. Orford’s finest, the Pinney’s smoked eel, came as thinly sliced slivers atop a fragrant quenelle of lemon crème fraiche, with apple and ginger dressing and tiny bacon chips, cool and fresh. The Deben mussels were moist and tender in a broth of Aspall cyder. Seared scallops were juicy buttons accompanied by Suffolk chorizo, a lovely squid ink polenta and young leeks. The nautical theme continues with a lot of fresh fish on the main menu, poached fillets of brill with tomato consommé, samphire and crayfish ravioli or catch of the day, skate for us, with smoked prawn butter, fennel, radish and watercress salad, or the traditional Adnams Dry Hop battered fish, served with rosemary fries, crushed peas and a piquant tartare sauce. For meat lovers there are the perennial steak favourites, lemon and thyme cord fed chicken breasts, sweet and sticky ribs, mighty Crown burgers and twists on pub classics such as gammon with fried duck egg, poached pineapple and rosemary fries. A delicious new season rack of lamb came with Roscoff onion, spring greens, crispy lamb belly, boulangere, tomato and rosemary jus.

HE desserts are as deserving of the Crown’s regaling – the supreme coconut rice pudding parfait is absolutely lovely, with fragments of meringue, chocolate and tiny cubes of caramel poached pineapple. The Adnams sourdough treacle tart was a gorgeous, hearty, sugary slab, lightened and lifted by almond streusel mascarpone ice cream. Other choices, poached local rhubarb, yoghurt panna cotta, citrus Chantilly and ginger crumble, or chocolate delice, rum soaked oranges, chocolate crumb and orange marmalade ice cream just as delectable. The treasures of the Crown are its delightful, thoughtful local and seasonal menu, a fabulous choice of drinks and a cool and contemporary outside space for enjoying warm summer evenings and long lazy lunches in the Suffolk sun.

Ugly Thief

Jack Rooke: Good Grief

THEATRE

SUNDAY 4 JUNE

1-10 JUNE

Young people used to be something we were proud of, bright young things packed full of ambition. They were the future and we wanted them to flourish, but look at them now. Desperate to prove their worth but too lazy to put the effort in to succeed. It’s time we said it, young people are rubbish now. Strong content throughout makes this performance unsuitable for young people under the age of 14.

Returning for its 17th year, this 10 day festival offers a bright and inspiring snapshot of contemporary theatre with established and emerging artists, both local and those from further afield. Here's a few highlights to get you tempted. SATURDAY 3 JUNE

NEWS

One to watch...

Everyone seems to be talking about Bessie Turner, the 23-year-old singer songwriter from Suffolk. Her style is an eclectic pastiche of her musical heroes; she is influenced as much by MIA as she is Dusty Springfield. Yet it is her own uniqueness that sets her apart as an artist and performer. Her voice rings with a soulfulness that floats like a cloud – wistful, effortless and above all charming. In April she released her debut single, Big Sleep; the video had over 20,000 views in its first week and has already been played on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music. Could this be a sign of things to come? Bessie lives on a houseboat on the bank of the River Orwell and is collaborating with SuperGlu’s Benjamin Ward (Don’t Try is his own newly established label) to expand upon her one-woman acoustic sound. Recorded by George Perks (Young Guns, Clean Bandit, The Darkness) in amongst the rough wood, antique rugs and analogue equipment of The Crypt Studio in London, its production is as warm and homely as the space itself. Her distinctive voice, drifts softly above the patter patter of electronic drums, picked acoustic guitar and a warm wiring bass line. The subtleties of the arrangement showcase an effortless flair for melody executed without a single drop of pretence. Darrell Smith Archway Carpets, Woodbridge

Darrell Smith works alongside his dad at their family-run business, Archway Carpets, in Woodbridge. The business has been going strong for over 30 years and Darrell loves working in the riverside town every day. He lives with his wife Vicki and two sons, Ryan and Cory, in East Ipswich.

How did you get into the carpet business? My mum fell ill with cancer and in the first years her illness was managed with treatment but, when things worsened, I wanted to be there for her more. My employers, at the time, were not understanding and so I felt it was time to quit and, temporarily, start working at Archway. It was within two weeks of signing all the paperwork that mum passed away knowing that her wish to have one of her boys working in the business had come true. With my dad grieving, the business was not his focus, and I found myself not just being a temporary support, but the person doing all the daily running. It was initially tough, with stalwart customers unsure about someone new, but they soon warmed to me once dad introduced me. It wasn’t long before I started networking with

other local businesses, making friends and actually starting to enjoy the work! Archway Carpets has been going for over 30 years what changes have you seen in the trade over this time? We see changes happen often. Some patterns and designs thankfully come and go but the quality of our products endure. The British-made wool carpets have seen a huge increase in quality, and the range of colours and designs means there is one for everyone.

Do you find yourself checking out the carpets everywhere you go? I get told off for checking carpets and flooring all the time! On the plus side, I sometimes see different flooring around which I then source for our customers. What carpet have you chosen for your own house? I have Kingsmead stripes on my stairs with a complimentary plain in the landing and hall, with wood flooring effect vinyl in my lounge and one of our rugs to finish the look. I am currently redecorating our bedroom and I always see carpets I want at home. What are your hidden gems in Woodbridge? I enjoy the riverside walk at lunchtime on a sunny day and, when calling on customers, I always try and look up at the many wonderful buildings in the town. I do enjoy a breakfast at Honey and Harvey and there is always a good bite to eat at the Teahut by the river. I have also often extended a business meeting with a good lunch in a couple of our local pubs! n Archway Carpets 7 Church St, Woodbridge 01394 386684 www.archwaycarpets.co.uk
