Face of SUFFOLK

2016 MODEL SEARCH JMM Model Management has teamed up with Vanilla Magazine, Heart FM & Latitude to search for the fresh new Face of Suffolk 2016

JMM Just Model Management

YOU COULD WIN... ● ONE YEAR MODELLING

CONTRACT

● VANILLA FASHION

PHOTOSHOOT

● TWO WEEKEND PASSES

TO LATITUDE

12

Are you tall, slim with strong bone structure? Or do you know someone who is? “Model potential is hard to quantify,” say JMM’s Samantha Simpson, “but it’s often the tall, studious girls that don’t realise that they are beautiful and spend their days hunched up trying to be a similar height to their other friends.” “Then you encourage them to stand up straight, wear heels, celebrate just how gorgeous they are and suddenly they blossom into a strong, confident, young woman right in front of your eyes. That moment is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”

Beauty and Brains! The best time to start is between 16-20 years. Most of JMM’s models completed their ‘A’ Levels first and currently balance their international modelling work with university. Abigail Harrington, 20, is studying Sociology at Goldsmiths, London. “Modelling has funded my life and my degree in London. I’ve had wonderful opportunities to travel and earn money in my holidays. Plus the fashion industry is really interesting to look at from a sociological perspective!” Violet Gould, 20, is in her third year at Royal Holloway, University of London, studying Geography. “Being at uni and modelling at the same time has given me an opportunity to make the best of both worlds. Thankfully, I've learnt lessons in time management that I don't think any other situation or person could have helped me with, EVER. I am so pleased to have been given this amazing opportunity to follow a creative path alongside my studies and I plan to keep learning and developing both aspects of my life for as long as I can.” Vita West, 20, is reading Education with English at

Queens College, Cambridge. “Studying at Cambridge is pretty full-on but in the summer I get a really long break, from July until October. So I model then and I get to do London Fashion Week in September which I love.” Being smart is definitely an asset, either academically or street-smart, because it takes more than just good looks to be successful in the competitive world of high fashion. You need to be able to interpret a brief and get along with the multitude of different people that you are going to meet every day ■

The Saints area of Ipswich comprises of St Peters and St Nicholas Streets, and forms a natural link from the Town Centre to the Waterfront. Steeped in history and home to our best independent businesses, shops and eateries, it’s a must-visit destination...

ROCKET MUSIC

Buying a musical instrument online may not save you money, says Matthew TravesLong, owner of Rocket Music in St Nicholas Street. “Shop local,” he told Vanilla, “because we take pride in our customer and aftersales service. I can match most online prices anyway and if something needs adjusting, I can usually do this in-store. This will save you the cost of returning instruments by post and having to wait weeks for their return,” he added. Locally, Ed Sheeran continues to influence sales with Matt pointing out that “everyone seems to want a small guitar to produce that same sort of sound. Ed has boosted sales for guitar shops, especially in the acoustic market.” So instead of impersonal online sites, pop into Rocket Music and benefit from expert knowledge. “You have to feel what you are buying,” Matt emphasises. “You have to try before you buy.”

14

CRAFTY BABA Described as ‘catnip’ by a customer, Crafty Baba on St Peters St has only been open 18 months but great customer service, online ordering from a redesigned website and their extensive stock has attracted a loyal customer base of craft and haberdashery lovers. For Spring, owner Zoe Woods recommends Liberty lawn fabrics whilst William Morris’s Lodden prints are “flying off the shelves.” If you want to re-do a child’s bedroom, choose from new fabrics including shark, car or science prints- perfect for boys or girls. They run classes too: “We’ve doubled the amount of sewing classes and offer couture dressmaking, pattern cutting and grading,” Zoe says. “Six part-time teachers run classes from a ‘learn how to sew’ right up to the more advanced. Crafty Baba also offers gift vouchers for courses, a wonderful birthday present we think.”

WELL DONE TO... KEYSTONE ESTATE AGENTS There’s no doubt that the ban on free plastic bags is environmentally sound and one St Peters Street business has come up with a great way of helping shoppers. Enter Tote Bags For Life, an initiative by Keystone Estate Agents which provides visitors to The Saints area with sturdy bags. Jonathan Tricker from Keystones told us: “We thought it was a good way of promoting the area. We wanted to increase our interaction with the local community and support the street. The bags can be used in and around the Saints, it is great advertising and it all helps the environment and reduces plastic bag waste.”

HE SAINTS area in Ipswich town centre is going from strength to strength since being ranked as one of the best high streets in Britain as part of the Great British High Street Awards. “The publicity the competition attracted helped cement The Saints reputation as a go to destination for indie shops and restaurants,”says Cathy Frost, who has owned gift shop Love One in St Peter’s Street for seven years. “Our main draws are the independent, quirky retailers, great food and drink, regular street markets, locally-sourced products, the history of the area and the location between the Waterfront and the town centre., but it is all driven by a strong business community." John Manning, owner of The House in Town, added: “There

The Saints: always full of charm and character

is a really diverse and vibrant feel here and there really is something for everyone.” Almost 100% of the properties occupied, The Saints now has its own map with Blackfriars to help identify the great diversity of the shops and restuarants as well the historical aspects of the area. “We have some of the best and well-respected beauty salons

trending this Spring.... Bestselling Aveda Hand Relief £19.50

and hairdressers in Ipswich on the Saints. We also have accountants, estate agents, a travel agent and even a travel clinic.” Cathy points out. Lois Mickleburgh, owner of wool shop Jenny Wrens Yarns, said: “We are like a mini town within a town. There is a nice community feel here.” here.

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

H

ERE AT Fanny & Frank HQ, AKA our Woodbridge store, it now seems as though every other customer walking through our doors is looking for a wedding or special occasion outfit and trying to make sense of dress codes. It’s almost as confusing as the Brexit debate! Do dress codes stay or remain? The conversation goes something like this: Us: “Hello, is there anything we can help you with?” Customer,: “No thanks, I’m just looking, I’ll know it when I see it.” Us: “Is it a special occasion?” Customer: “Well, yes...” Us: “Would you like to see our dressing up room which has lots of lovely pieces?” Well, you can imagine how it goes on until the customer relaxes and we do our job and they try on some truly lovely and quite unusual combinations. Happy customers frequently leave saying they would never have thought to try on that shape/colour/combination, and invariably leave feeling pampered and accessorised with care and attention and with an outfit that flatters, making them feel confident and special. Job done! Dressing for any occasion can be confusing though, as today all the old rules and barriers have

30

via a bag or shoes is a great way to go, and you'll create an individual look rather than a uniform.

A

Dressing it right! been disregarded, which is great fun for the more adventurous but doubly daunting for those of you who rely on an easy-to-follow dress code. For example, can you wear black to a wedding? A definite yes. And teamed up with a gold or silver bag and/or shoes? Very chic. Do my shoes and bag need to match? Not at all! Do I need a hat? Not necessarily! Colour combinations such as black and navy, pink and orange, yellow and brown are all totally acceptable and nothing needs to be matchy-matchy, so adding a splash of colour to a neutral outfit

S FOR the current fashion trends, there is so much fun and diversity this season. No need to squeeze into your skinnies, there are lots of baggy trousers, flares, and the mother of all trouser shapes is now a crop, be it wide, narrow or flared. And for your feet, the summer ankle boot in gorgeous colours or with fringes, is just so perfect for our English climate, as are the abundance of amazing trainers. We love casual outfits that appear effortlessly put together – a tee shirt half tucked in, three different necklaces mixing silver, gold, rose gold and bright coloured tassels. Shorts, ankle boots and an oversized shirt... so many lovely things to play around with. A word of warning though. However much fun you choose to have with designer ripped jeans, and Swarovski crystal encrusted trainers, there are still a few places with rigid dress codes. Please remember that neither Claridge’s, the Ritz nor Woodbridge Golf Club allow ripped jeans or trainers in the bar! ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge and now also in Saffron Walden, Essex.

“Thanks to Amanda’s advice, Robert and I have continued to be amicable throughout our split”

Housing rights when separating if you have children OUR PROBLEM: When Robert and I met, twelve years ago, he already owned a nice house and it wasn’t long before I moved in. We were happy and, both coming from separated families, we didn’t see the need to get married to prove our love for each other. Now we’re separating ourselves and I’m worried that our son, Zac, and I will need to find somewhere new to live. My name isn’t on the deeds to the house and although I contributed to our lifestyle, paying for holidays, treats and the like, as well as for Zac’s clothes, clubs and things, I’ve never actually paid anything toward the mortgage or the household bills. SARAH, IPSWICH

32

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: I moved in with Robert around six months after we met. He had bought his house four years previously and we felt very lucky that it was large enough to provide a great family home – especially when I fell pregnant with Zac. While we’d spoken about marriage and our reluctance to make the same mistakes that our parents had, I’d never really thought about splitting up as an unmarried couple, or the consequences of doing so without the safeguards that it would have offered me, especially as my name was never put onto the deeds of our home. When we decided to separate, the realisation that I may have to leave our family house with nowhere to go hit home, making Vanilla April/May 2016

REAL LIVES

me feel rather naïve. My mum suggested I speak with Barker Gotelee, the firm of solicitors she had used when she and dad divorced. She said that they had made her feel supported and at ease, two things I needed in abundance. I just wanted to know what I was entitled to and how we could fix it, so I contacted Amanda Erskine and made an appointment to go in to the office in Martlesham the very next week. Mum was right and I felt more settled and hopeful as soon as I started speaking with Amanda. I told her of our situation and that a friend had suggested I may be able to claim for some money as Robert’s common law wife. Amanda said that, unless we had entered into a cohabitation agreement while we were still together, as we were unmarried, I had no automatic entitlement to any provision from Robert. She also explained that there was no recognition of common law spouses in English and Welsh law. Fortunately, I was entitled to ask Robert to help provide for Zac, but that would only be applicable until Zac reached the age of eighteen.

T

ALKING through our options, Amanda recommended that Robert and I may be better off arranging a financial settlement through negotiation or mediation. This would be especially helpful for maintaining considerate communications, something well worth doing to avoid any more upset for Zac. I went away with lots to consider and discussed mediation with Robert, who agreed that it would April/May 2016 Vanilla

be the best option. Amanda arranged everything for us, making sure that I was adequately prepared to negotiate with Robert during mediation sessions and to make choices that were right for me. I stayed in contact with her throughout the mediation process, making sure to ask her advice at each stage.

O

NCE we’d decided on a course of action, Amanda drew up a Deed of Separation for us, formalising all the terms we’d agreed on. Thanks to Amanda’s advice, Robert and I have continued to be amicable throughout our split and he has made sure that Zac and I are well provided for, at least for the next nine years or so.

With a few friends in similar, cohabiting relationships, and knowing that it’s a growing trend of our times – I’d read that the number of cohabiting couples had doubled in the last ten years – I also asked Amanda what I should have done to make the formalities of our separation easier to manage. She suggested that a cohabitation agreement would have been a straightforward document to draft with the help of a solicitor, and that writing mirrored wills at the same time would also have been a good idea. I feel very fortunate to have had Amanda working on my side and I’d recommend the team at Barker Gotelee to anyone in a similar situation to mine. ■

ADVICE

5 TOP TIPS

How to take a better picture More and more of us today have access to some form of camera. Capturing, recording and showcasing our lives on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. One common misconception is that all you is need a jolly good camera with an expensive lens. By applying a few do’s and don’t basic principles, anyone can turn an ordinary snap into a visually engaging image.

BY CHERRY BEESLEY

1

COMPOSITION Photographers, as they start out, learn the ‘rule of thirds’ principle. It is not a rule that must be adhered to, more a guide, but a key principle that, if learned, will help you create more pleasing, balanced and compelling picture. To implement the rule of thirds either in your mind, using your viewfinder or in the LCD panel on your camera, place two horizontal lines and two vertical lines over your image, like a noughts and crosses board. The best positions to place the main points of interest in your picture lie generally along these four gridlines (pictured right). Where the lines intersect is known as the four ‘points of interest’. Next time you’re composing a shot use this guide.

2

TIME Don’t rush. Decide what you want to capture, compose the image, check the subject you want to capture is in focus, then press the shutter but don’t be too hasty to move on too quickly. Ensure the camera has finished taking the picture before moving. Lean against something like a wall for balance perhaps, just to help keep your hand steady.

34

3

CHANGE PERSPECTIVE Most of the time we take pictures from a straight on standing perspective. Why not try and change the angle where you are shooting from e.g. crouch down or move the camera? Challenge the usual way you look at things and see things from a different viewpoint.

4

LIGHTING Don’t ever shoot into the sun and try to avoid photographing at midday when the sun is at its highest. Early morning and early evening sunset times are the golden hours for photographers with long shadows and more rich, warmer colours adding depth.

5

FRAMING Don’t overcrowd your image with elements that add nothing but distraction to the eye, such as lampposts on the side of the frame. Move closer to the subject or try cropping it out.

THE NO-KNIFE FACELIFT

ooking old is dreaded by many, particularly in the land of Celebrity, where the quest for eternal youth is often taken to the extreme. For those of us living in the real world, though, where facelifts are more curiosity than commonplace – wrinkles, sagging skin and pigmentation are an unfortunate fact of life. But here at Suffolk Medical Clinic, we know a way to get the effect of a facelift without surgery. Using a whole-face approach, giving a few tweaks here and there, the so-called ‘non-surgical facelift’ can work wonders. The brilliance of this new approach to anti-ageing is that it combines the best of Botox, fillers, chemical peels and lasers to treat the whole face. The results are subtle, natural and yet incredibly effective. Candice, 49, grew up in Australia before sunscreen became a national obsession. The effects of sun damage were,

BEFORE

by her own admission, written all over her face. The skin on her face was crepey and loose and her cheeks looked a little gaunt. She had wrinkles around her eyes but what she hated most were the deep lines from her nose to her chin that dragged her face down and made her look sad. We used a combination of fillers and wrinkle-reducing

AFTER

injections to plump out Candice’s lines and create a lifted effect in her cheeks. We then used a chemical peel to even out and refresh her complexion. Here is what she had to say: ‘The deep lines I had around my eyes and mouth have vanished. The filler seems to have lifted my face so my jowls have pretty much gone too and my skin looks much brighter. Before the treatment, I was worried that I'd end up looking ‘over-done’ but I just look like me only a bit younger and less grumpy! My friends are amazed and at least one is planning to follow suit.’

FLAWLESS IMAGE AT SECKFORD Seckford Hall

T’S OFFICIAL... Heaven does exist! We’ve just returned from Seckford Hall Spa where we’ve been in the hands of the Flawless Image therapists and the experience was, well... simply heavenly. The Vanilla team were looking for some pampering so we asked Sarah Gregory, owner of Flawless Image, if we could ‘test-drive’ one of the half day spa experiences at the newly refurbished spa at Seckford. Lunch would follow, but we let Sarah choose for us – our brief was ‘the ultimate pamper’ – so she booked us both in for one of the renowned Temple Spa massages, The Drift Away, with a 30 minute facial to top it off. The treatments take place in the serene double treatment rooms, set in beautiful grounds a world away from the stresses of everyday life. So, to get us in the mood, we

first enjoyed tea, coffee and chat in the the light airy dining space, before moving through and have some ‘down time’ in the renovated pool, Jacuzzi and new sauna and steam rooms. Calm and serenity prevails here. Our therapists Laura and Andrea let us know when our time to be pampered had come and we were led upstairs to the treatment rooms. The hour and a half that followed were pure and utter bliss. As I lay in a dimmed room tucked under a blanket and had the most comprehensive full body massage I think my body has ever had, using the most luxurious aromotherapy Drift Away massage oil with sesame, avocado and lavendar. Andrea’s incredibly soothing massage and the scent of all those exotic ingredients meant I may or may not have dropped off and had a little snooze!

The PowerBreakfast Facial brought me back to reality. Taking all the ingredients that you would find in a healthy breakfast – oats, honey and fruit juices – Temple Spa have created a gorgeous revitalising facial that includes a deep cleansing power cleanse, nutritious mask, lymph drainage massage and wonderful scalp massage. The entire experience had been, we both agreed, second to none and given the exquisite lunch that followed in the Seckford Restaurant, has to make this as a Spa venue, the best in the county. If it’s luxury and pampering you’re after this gets our top recommendation. Make-Up Tutorials at The Treatment Rooms, Maison Talbooth

L

EARNING to apply makeup to look perfect and professional is not as easy as one would think. To look our best we know we need to get our skin in the best condition and use only top quality makeup products, but learning how to apply it often comes down to snatched moments with the sales girl at the beauty counter or YouTube videos. To introduce taking on the hip new make-up range ‘delilah’, the Treatment Rooms at Maison Talbooth has had the smart idea to offer tutorials in five key hard-to-master skills: Perfect eyebrows, flawless skin, under eye darkness, uneven skin and smokey eyes. delilah Cosmetics is the new luxe beauty brand on the block and it’s pretty, chic and practical. Packaged in stylish rose gold and

48

pewter grey packaging, several of the products have become instant classics. Two of us booked in together for a double session of tutorials each, so I had the benefit of being able to earwig on my friend’s tutorials as well. I wanted to glean all I could about getting perfect brows and flawless skin, while my friend chose smokey eyes and under-eye darkness (she being the party animal!). We were in the experienced hands of spa manager Emily and therapist Aimee and the stunning setting of the Maison Talbooth only added to the occasion. We were each shown easy to understand, step-by-step processes with a good chat and viewing after each stage so you could be sure to get it right when later home alone. The makeup and the brushes were all

fabulous, but stand out products were, the Under Wear skin primer, Time Frame foundation and Fade Away concealer – all of which have now become our ‘absolute must-have for the rest of my life’ products. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you the Time Frame foundation (£34) offers the most flawless, even coverage I’ve ever experienced. In fact it feels like a tinted BB cream in terms of lightness and texture, but with the coverage of a foundation. And the chubby Kabuki brush (£42) allowed me to learn how to blend and smooth the fluid foundation to give an almost airbrush finish. Armed with lots of new makeup (we just couldn’t resist!) and flawless faces, we descended to the Garden Room below and topped off our afternoon of luxury with a sumptuous Afternoon Tea for two. Now that’s the sort of education I could get used to! n VANILLA READER OFFER delilah tutorials (20mins each) £25 plus receive £10 off any delilah products purchased on the day of the tutorial. (Offer for April-May, Monday to Friday) Afternoon Tea is £19.50 per person. For more info visit www.milsomhotels.com/maisontalbooth/the-treatment-rooms/

To groom or not to groom? groom Sorry boys: Survey reveals more women want their partners to groom!

Y

ou may well raise a perfectly groomed/not so perfectly groomed brow at this latest survey, but it would seem the fairer sex are no longer content with the au natural man. Now the sun is out and in the wake of Valentine’s Day, beauty salons are experiencing their yearly influx in waxing salon appointments, but if women get their way they won’t be the only ones enduring pain for the sake of love. Plucking the most staggering statistic from the survey, a whopping 75% of women would like their partners to groom their pubic hair – a surprising seven per cent higher than men – yet with only 55% of men acting on this, it seems they are falling short (and curly). Of course, women are by no means exempt from all the fuzz about body hair, with 68% of men preferring their partners to undertake some kind of grooming and, luckily for them, the survey reveals that an average 82% groom their nether regions to some extent – whether trimming, styling or going the full Brazilian. The tongue-in-cheek survey

So whether it’s a clip, trim, tweeze, shave or wax – lie back and think of England. Regardless of gender, it seems your date will thank you for it! The figures in full: • Women who groom 82% • Males who groom 55% • Women who want their male partners to groom 75% • Males who want their female partners to groom 68%

Of the women who groom: • 40% go for full hair removal • 15% style • 44% trim Of the women who want their partners to groom: • 26% prefer full hair removal • 14% prefer styled • 60% are happy with a trim

BROWS ON FLEEK!

The latest brow techniques to hit the town

3D ULTIMATE BROWS AT EDEN BEAUTY HOUSE The new 3D Ultimate Brow treatment will frame and shape your face, is waterproof, smudge proof and will last up to 3 weeks. “Ultimate Brows are created by building on your natural eyebrow shape to create fuller and thicker eyebrows with perfect definition. They will last around 3 weeks with the correct aftercare,” explains Michelle from Eden Beauty. Your therapist creates a brow shape, with volume and thickness, through sculpting and multi-layering. A new specially formulated gel is mixed with pigment powder to create a colour and look that is bespoke to you. Applied to the existing brow or directly to the skin, the transparent gel used in the Ultimate Brow treatment is light reflective and thickens the individual strands of hair with a realistic, natural look. The gel is applied with a micro pin but doesn’t pierce the skin at anytime. Eden Beauty House is offering Vanilla readers 3D Ultimate Brow for £30 throughout April and May.

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Carter and the team at Image

AS I HAVE GOT OLDER IT SEEMS AS IF MY LASHES AND BROWS HAVE BECOME SPARSE. WHAT CAN I DO? You’re right the older we get the more sparse and finer our hair becomes. This won’t have been helped by years of using mascara. A single coat of conditioner before applying mascara or brow pencil will help to strengthen, lengthen and thicken lashes and brows. The lash conditioner will also give you more of a dramatic look. Semipermanent eyebrow tattooing could be a great alternative to fill in the spare areas, as well as eyelash extensions which will add extra length and thickness to lashes. THE DOCTOR HAS SAID I HAVE ACNE ROSACEA, IT’S SORE AND LOOKS HORRIBLE. I WANT TO COVER IT UP BUT I’M NOT SURE WHAT TO USE. It’s worth either going back to see your doctor or seeing a nutritionist because there are lots of foods types that will help calm and sooth, equally there will be food types that will irritate the condition... i.e. spicy foods and alcohol may trigger flare ups. Other triggers are the environment, lifestyle, stress and cosmetics. To help with covering up acne rosacea, you are best off using all mineral make-up, as this will allow your skin to breath and won’t irritate your rosacea. I would also advise a consultation with a professional skin therapist to

54

advise you on products you should be using and also what to avoid. MY NAILS FLAKE AT THE END AND WILL NOT GROW? This is a common nail condition called onychoschisis. It is often caused by having hands that are constantly wet, frequent use and removal of nail polish or artificial nails, and continuous mild trauma to the nail plate. We suggest you book regular manicures to keep on top of the problem. Have you considered trying gelish on your nails? The polish will last you 2-3 weeks without chipping or peeling, and will in actual fact help your natural nails underneath to grow and become stronger. I WOULD LOVE TO TRY CONTOURING. WHAT WOULD I NEED AND WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SUGGEST? When contouring there are 2 different methods, using liquids or powders. If you’re contouring for the first time I would use powders as they are a lot easier to work with and really easy to blend! Applying the contour using a tapered brush (or a normal blusher brush) where shadows normally fall on the face e.g. under the cheek bones to excentuate them. It’s important to contour the whole face so use the product right into your hair line and behind the ears. I like to think of it as the number 3 drawn around the side of your face. Highlight tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupids bow, brow bone – basically anywhere you want to enhance. You can apply highlight with an oval blender brush but I tend to use my fingers as I find it easier to work with. Just remember to blend, blend, blend and you can’t go wrong. n

MATTRESS

NEED-TO-KNOWS

Hiroto double duvet cover £70 House of Fraser

LIFE EXPECTANCY OF MATTRESSES

On average, mattresses tend to have a life of anything between 5-14 years depending on the quality of the materials used in the manufacturing process. Hand side-stitched mattresses tend to have a longer life expectancy due to all of the fillings being pulled in around the edges. THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Always shop for the best value not the lowest price. Of course, there are some perfectly acceptable, lower priced beds available (far preferable to an unhygienic second-hand bed shaped to someone else’s body) but the better the construction, the better the support and comfort and the longer the bed will last. BUY BASE AND MATTRESS TOGETHER?

Divan bases last on average the life of two mattresses, however when it comes to frames we would recommend a new frame to be purchased with a new mattress in case the frame has deteriorated over time. We always recommend when buying a mattress only that it is tried on the same type of base/frame that it will be going on to. WHAT SHOULD I PAY FOR A GOOD MATTRESS?

Children’s mattresses can be purchased for under £100, however for 2 adults on a double bed used every night, you really need to start from £200 and can go up to as much as £1,350. Although you do get what you pay for, the most expensive is not always best and when finding the perfect mattress it really is down to the needs of the individual, some people may find a perfect mattress for £550 and do not like the support or feel of the dearer mattresses. Remember that every £100 you spend on a new bed, equals an investment of just 2.7p a night (assuming a lifespan of seven years).

HOMES

Property expert Mark Halls on adding value

W

ant to sell your home? Have the money to extend? Or do you simply want to add value to your home for when you’re ready to make that move? It’s easy to get carried away when it comes to renovating your property, but what improvements will really make the biggest impact on the overall value?

66

Open plan living and extending your home add real value

The most obvious way to add value to your property is to extend the square footage. Adding an extension gives an instant boost and can change the appeal of any property. It allows you to add what you feel the property lacks, whether this be: further bedrooms a games room or that all important extra family space! There are two main ways this can be achieved; it could be a simple extension onto your home or a self-contained annexe. Annexes have become increasingly popular, being used as accommodation for guests, family or when you want that all important ‘me’ time. A two bedroom self-contained annexe could significantly increase the value of your home. Open-plan living has become what most people are looking for in their next property. People love to see light and space, nevertheless, it is important to not lose the homely feel. A good mixture of new and old is a great

way to capture the lifestyle most buyers want and differentiate your home from others on the market. Whether you are extending, converting to create an annexe or simply looking to open up the look and lifestyle of your home – it’s all possible without excessive cost or disruption. I do hope you find the above of interest and take time to utilise it in order to get that tip top price for your home, or simply give it a little pizzazz! Happy house selling! ROM starting life supplying second-hand furniture to becoming the biggest home department store in East Anglia, Glasswells has come a long way to now be firmly established as one of the region’s best-loved and most respected family-run businesses. Glasswells is steeped in family tradition with the ethos of the company – high quality products, lots of choice, hard work and always putting the customer first – as much at the heart of today’s business as it was when it first opened in May 1946. Jerry Glasswell opened his first shop in Brentgovel Street, Bury St Edmunds with his son, Leslie, followed by grandson Paul to continue the family-run traditions. They first made their name at trade shows throughout West Suffolk and beyond, from their success at the shows the family opened a second shop in St Andrews Street. Expansions to the existing premises were followed by a number of town centre stores, before Glasswells

LEARN TO

LOVE YOUR LAWN Tips for Tom Thumb Lawncare

S

O, the sun finally decided to show its face. That’s great for us, but the sun can cause a multitude of problems for your lawn. The grass plant, just like any other plant, needs water to survive. When the air becomes hot and dry, the grass plant starts to perspire (sweat) at a quicker rate than normal. In order to compensate for this, the plant will want to retain and absorb more water than normal. Unfortunately for your grass, the soil has also started to dry out so it’s usually too late! There are some tips however to give your lawn the best possible chance through a period of low rainfall:

1

Don’t cut your lawn during the day. The grass plant holds most of its moisture in its leaves.

Cutting into these leaves allows water to escape from the tips. Aim to cut your lawn in the evening if it needs cutting. During periods of severe drought, your lawn won’t be growing much, so refrain from cutting your lawn until you see some new growth.

2

Make sure your blade is sharp. Lawn mower blades are designed to slice the tip of the

grass plants leaves. This allows the cut to heal a lot quicker, preventing excessive moisture loss. If your blade is blunt, it will rip the top of the leaf off leaving the cut open for a long time.

68

3

Water your lawn. Watering your lawn is the most obvious way of keeping your lawn looking green through dry periods. However, water costs money. Applying a Water Conservation Treatment to your lawn will mean you can water your lawn for just 20 minutes and get the same effects as watering for two hours.

The warm weather can also cause several different fungal diseases to show their ugly faces. Red Thread is the UK’s biggest Lawn Fungal Disease and loves warm wet weather. The majority of UK lawns suffer from this stealth disease, but combatting it is actually quite easy. The key to any fungal disease control is maintaining the amount of air movement there is around the grass plants and the soil level. Scarification and aeration in the autumn will give the grass plants a more desirable home to live in, allowing your lawn to thrive in the spring and summer time. Increasing the airflow will also help to distract moss from making its home in your lawn through the autumn and winter period. Insects, such as leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) can also become active at this time of year so keep an eye for flocks of starlings digging at your lawn! If you have brown patches on your lawn, they may be worth investigating. Don’t let your lawn lose the battle this year. Call Tom Thumb on 01473 396 083 or visit www. tomthumblawncare.co.uk for more info.

T

HE Bildeston Crown is a lovely, lively inn, dating back to the 15th century in parts, with lots of original and ancient features among the maze of many sprawling rooms. Logs burn in huge open fireplaces, under timbered beams, art and artefacts hang on the darkly painted walls, a beautiful courtyard for outside eating and the place positively crackles and buzzes with atmosphere. This is a warm and friendly Suffolk inn, with punters lolling on leather arm chairs in the bar or deep in chatter at the restaurant tables. The affable staff are eager and accommodating – this is a place where you are as welcome for a special occasion dinner for twenty as for bar snacks alone. The menus – devised by the much-lauded chef Chris Lee – are imaginative and adventurous, with a Classics menu – a tranche of delicious pub favourites for those

who like to play safe with their sustenance and the foodies’ Select menu ‘a showcase for the skills of our chefs’. The bar snack menu includes delicacies such as chorizo and manchego cheese croquettes, giblet pie with mash and beans, mini hash browns with a truffle mayo, and there’s a whole heap of sandwiches and light lunch specials too – like eggs benedict or lobster Caesar wrap. For starters the intriguing ‘Crown All Day Breakfast’ from the Select menu was a delight of surprises – tiny triangles of brioche, a little chicken and duck liver sausage bursting with flavour, slithers of black pudding, oven dried cherry tomatoes, quail eggs, mushrooms and cannellini beans. From the Classics menu the smoked haddock fish was a delicious ball of fluffy potato and rich smoky fish around a perfect soft boiled egg, floating in a luscious lake of

creamy chive hollandaise sauce. Also tempting from the long list of starters – a quail kiev or warm salad of lobster, velouté of Nedging Hall parsley, crispy frogs legs and garlic, or pressed tomato terrine, basil and goat’s cheese, or baked camembert or moules marinière.

T

HE main courses from the edgy Select menu showed the huge amounts of skill of the chefs to perfection. A cannon of Nedging lamb, alongside a roll of braised shoulder, with quenelles of basil mash and piquant ratatouille was sublime. The duck egg with soldiers, roasted breast and

parsnips was clever and superbly crafted. Also on the Select menu – sea bream fillet with mussel and white bean stew and candied orange or roasted cod, confit chicken thighs, braised endive and truffle potato or celeriac and apple lasagne. On the classic menus, Sri Lankan curry, salt cod nuggets and chips, Red Poll steak and the much coveted Red Poll burger with foie gras and truffle mayo. The desserts were to die for – and new pastry chef wunderkind, Nick Henn, fresh from almost five years at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, creating a masterpiece of work with a caramelised Braeburn

apple, light almond sponge and apple sorbet – topped with the most beautiful translucent slither of apple crisp. The After Eight soufflé with chocolate ice cream was a monumental cloud of mouth melting deep chocolate with lashing of sweet mint.

T

HE Bildeston Crown pulls off a remarkable feat – clever good food, in a warm and relaxed vibe. The front of house – led by Hayley and Rupert – are bubbly and friendly and those wizards in the kitchen create truly memorable meals, with style. It is a gorgeous gem of a Suffolk inn. FOOD

iNtFcIDhENeTn K IAL CO DANIEL PERJESI The Crown at Woodbridge is making the most of Suffolk’s extensive natural larder to create a Great British menu with a difference thanks to Hungarian-born chef Daniel Perjesi. Daniel’s Michelin star experience combined with flavoursome regional produce elevates the food offering at The Crown to new exciting heights. Expect a menu boasting the best British produce from around Suffolk, crafted into dishes that surprise and satisfy. Daniel Perjesi’s menu is without doubt the jewel in The Crown at Woodbridge. What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

What do you enjoy cooking the most?

Ground paprika. Being Hungarian it may not be too much of a surprise! It really is a staple ingredient back home and is widely-celebrated. We’re proud to have a reputation for producing world class paprika.

For me it’s fish. It’s so diverse and requires great skill to get it perfect. I also really enjoy the preparation side of things. There’s nothing better than getting a delivery of beautifully fresh, in-season seafood and carefully prepping it for the day ahead.

What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

To be honest, after a full-on shift in the kitchen, I’m not always that hungry and could do without cooking for myself! A tub of yoghurt is usually pretty great though.

76

What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

Asparagus is already popular but when properly in season and at its peak it really is a special ingredient. Suffolk in particular is great for local asparagus; it’s

literally on our doorstep. Suffolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?

Clarkes Butchers beer cured bacon is pretty special. I’m a very visual person – if I see something, I want to try it. When I visit my butchers and see them smoking something, or hanging a particular cut of meat it inspires me in the kitchen. THEATRE

19-23 APRIL

New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich highlights

Presented by The Original Theatre Company and The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds

Invincible

The Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a Government Inspector. His fear is well-founded as he has been somewhat lacking in his official duties. The hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to building that church! Surely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control.

With the recession biting hard, Emily and Oliver have decided to downsize and shift their middle-class London lifestyle to a small town in the north of England. One night they invite next door neighbours, Dawn and Alan into their home. Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives, anchovies, Karl Marx and abstract art; class and culture collide where the consequences are as tragic as they are hilarious. From one of the most exciting playwrights to emerge since Alan Ayckbourn, Torben Betts, and produced by the award-winning Original Theatre Company (Birdsong, Three Men In A Boat), comes a brand new production of the smash hit comedy, Invincible.

Mandy Leeson Vanil in Woodbridge

My East Coast Life

What brought you to Suffolk, and Woodbridge in particular? My family and I love to sail, and we were on the River Deben and came into Woodbridge. We immediately fell in love with the town, the river and the whole area. The big open skies reminded me of Sweden. What did you do before you came to Suffolk and opened the shop? I was a creative director working in packaging and branding for 25 years based mainly in London – but I was lucky enough to have worked in Amsterdam and Singapore. The shop was a way of extending my creativity, but doing something personal that I felt strongly about.

What makes the things you sell in Vanil so special? Each piece is unique and part of a collective of beautiful pieces that are loved and selected by me from the designers and makers that I feel passionate about. You won’t find them everywhere. The mix is eclectic and ever-changing. How do you source your stock, and what are your favourite pieces? We look be-yond trade shows and travel to Sweden and Denmark to source from crafts people and individual suppliers. My favourite at the moment are the Playtype mugs – I love the simple graphics in bright red. What are the latest trends in Scandinavian design? There is always lots of

monochrome with hits of colour, and natural materials. Wood and concrete are very on trend. Patterns are geometric and the Benni rug vintage and new have been a big seller for Vanil. What do you and your family like to do for fun in and around Woodbridge? We love walking with our two dogs, George and Lola – the river is so beautiful. We do lots of sailing in the summer, and a visit to The Table restaurant in Woodbridge for supper is always a treat. The vintage market is great fun, too, as I love to find quirky pieces for me.■ Vanil, 17 Church Street, Woodbridge, IP12 1DS +44 (0)7702 877081 Visit the new online shop: www.vanil.co.uk
