NEWS ❯❯ Local director and writer, Daniel Simpson, sees the release of his film, The Rendlesham UFO Incident this month. The alien-encounter movie combines the found-footage feel of the Blair Witch Project with the paranoia of The X-Files. Thirty three years after the infamous Rendlesham Forest UFO incident, three metal detector enthusiasts hunting for Saxon gold in the same region, capture incredible footage of UFO’s whilst filming their expedition. As night falls and with their navigation equipment failing, they find themselves facing a terrifying encounter with an unforgiving alien presence. The movie was shot entirely in Rendlesham Forest and RAF ENS 6 FEBRUARY Bentwaters, the locations of one of LOCAL FILM OP the most infamous incidents of extraterrestrial contact involving US military For more information see: personnel in the 1980s. www.facebook.com/RendleshamFilm. Original witness, ex-USAF, Larry Trailer: www.youtube.com/ Warren, has called the film: “Found watch?v=G4GijLIkmHM. The film goes footage for the thinking man.” on general release on 6th February.

“‘Now we’re looking forward to a happy retirement – seeing our children enjoy some of our hard earned savings”
Inheritance tax needn’t be a worry with a lifetime giving plan HOW IT WAS SOLVED: MY PROBLEM: My wife, Carole, and I have worked hard all of our lives and we’ve built up a nice nest egg – we know we’ll be comfortable in the years to come. With retirement around the corner, we’ve been looking into our finances and how we can make them work best for our family. Hopefully it’s a long way off but we don’t want our children to have to pay inheritance tax on our deaths if at all possible. So we wondered whether we can help our children out now, while we’re around to see them enjoy some of the money we can afford to give away. JOHN, IPSWICH
16
We’ve been looking forward to my retirement for a long time now and we have great plans for the next few years. Since our two children finished university, we’ve been saving the money we were spending on them to bolster our pensions, but looking at our cost of living, actually we’ll have more than enough to manage. We also have two grandchildren, and another on the way, and we’d like to make sure they have the very best start in life – perhaps paying for their school fees or setting them up with some good savings for when they go Vanilla February/March 2015
REAL LIVES
to university. Carole made the suggestion that we ought to look at how we could give money and save inheritance tax. I had to admit I didn’t know much about it, so we decided to contact local solicitors, Barker Gotelee, to discuss tax efficient giving.
I
HAD A CHAT with Gail Frankland on the phone, and she immediately put me at ease – she knew exactly what I was worried about and had the answers I needed – so we set up a date to meet at the Martlesham Heath offices the following week. We took all of our paperwork with us so that we could discuss our concerns fully and Gail gave us a number of options that could really work for us. She explained that we could give away a significant sum to each of our children now, but if we died within seven years of this gift they may still have to pay inheritance tax on all of it depending on how long it had been since we made the gift. Gail recommended that we put together a lifetime giving plan, taking advantage of some of the money transfers that are exempt from inheritance tax. Gail explained that as well as each of us being able to give £3,000 per tax year, we could also make as many outright gifts of up to £250 per beneficiary as we like, every tax year, provided those £250 gifts were not to the same people as those receiving all or part of the £3,000 gift. So we could give money to each February/March 2015 Vanilla
of our grandchildren free of inheritance tax too.
W
E ALSO REVIEWED our pensions and, as we thought, they easily cover our current standard of living, with some to spare. Gail explained that as long as we don’t dip into our capital savings, and we don’t compromise our standard of living, we could set up regular payments to our children from our income – again, free of inheritance tax. In the end, we’ve decided to help our children move into bigger houses now by giving a larger sum away to start the ball
rolling, and we’ve made a plan to make regular gifts of our £3,000 allowance each year. We’re also setting up monthly direct debits from the bank account our pensions get paid into, straight into each of our grandchildren’s savings accounts. I’m so relieved that we met with Gail and went through our options – there was so much we just didn’t know we could do. We both agree we’d recommend that our friends seek out similar advice from Barker Gotelee, to make sure the savings they’ve worked hard to accrue are passed down without being affected by inheritance tax. ■
We are here to help We all need legal services from time to time. Our Private Client specialists, Gail Frankland and Nick Palmer, are on hand to help.

It is predicted that for 2015 shoppers will become less trend-driven but will still be looking to stand out from the crowd. They want good quality fabrics and cut and want their outfits to have longevity. So value for money then? The popularity of vintage clothing is set to continue, and upcycled and preloved clothing will really come into its own.

REAL LIVES
THE VANILL A MAGA ZINE AGONY AUNT
It’s 2015: Start creating the life YOU want! DEAR JENNIFER... I consider myself to be a rational, intelligent and confident woman but whenever my mother-inlaw visits, I find myself feeling increasingly wound-up with panic setting in. I don’t want to subscribe to the mother-in-law cliché but she winds me up with her constant digs about my lack of cooking skills, comments on the children’s behaviour and how I should really be staying at home rather than working because maybe then, I’d have a tidier house and better behaved children! My husband doesn’t do much to ease the situation, looking like a rabbit in headlights. How do I get through these weekend visits without saying something I’ll regret and with my sanity intact?! Amelia HI AMELIA... Oh how I don’t envy you. However, how these visits pan out, is entirely in your hands. Firstly, you don’t have to invite your in-laws – think about it, you really don’t. If you choose to, it is because it sits better with your values and if this is the case, do not merely endure the day, it is your precious weekend
too. Perhaps your mother-in-law is out of her comfort zone when she’s not in her own home; maybe assign her a cooking task explaining that you’d really value her input and that way she may feel a bit more useful. Ask your husband to perhaps be a bit more involved in the day, maybe by chatting to his mother or keeping the children occupied so that the noise levels are kept to a dull roar. It is your house, your space so ensure you feel in control; it is your choice as to whether you enjoy the day so take steps to avoid the angst every time you know they are visiting. Good luck and be strong! Jennifer x DEAR JENNIFER... As Valentine’s Day approaches I find myself doing more and more naval gazing. I am currently single and so far, my relationship history has been disastrous. Usually my partners either seem to become disinterested in me or are quite controlling which I suppose is due to the lack of confidence I have in myself. I’m not one of life’s cheerleaders in the looks and moves department
and I also worry that my conversation can be dull. I’m not asking for much – just someone who will like me for who I am and who enjoys my company; someone to have a giggle with. I’m sure I’m not a hopeless case but sometimes I do wonder…! I’d appreciate your advice. Ellen
HI ELLEN... Think of Valentine’s
Day as not just a day when two people express their love for each other but when we can also focus on appreciating the great things about ourselves! Fall in love with yourself by loving the brilliant things about you– write them down if you need to. It’s important that we value and love ourselves because our self-image determines what we get. Life will never be better than your self-image allows it to be so if you see yourself as a downtrodden, boring person - that is what you are projecting to others. The only thing that stands between you and the ideal life you would love to live, is YOU so start working on your self-image and reap the rewards – this time next year, you’ll feel a different person! 3D-LipoMed
Is this the hi-tech secret to the perfect bikini body? We investigate 3D LipoMed – the revolutionary treatment of fat and cellulite
A
FTER THREE C-SECTIONS and a hernia operation a number of years ago, I have no stomach muscles. Despite fairly regular exercise and trying to eat healthily (most of the time!) I can never seem to tone my flabby belly. I’d come to the conclusion that this was the way it had to be – or maybe not! I first became aware of 3D-LipoMed after Dr Leah Totton won hit TV series The Apprentice in 2013. I heard she’d installed one of the new machines at her London clinic and it’s extremely sought after, especially by celebrities. WAG Coleen Rooney’s the most high profile – she certainly looks very toned after two children.
36
But regular trips to London were out of the question, so I put it to the back of my mind until I found out there was a place near me, Suffolk Medical Clinic, in the beautiful village of Boxford, midway between Sudbury and Hadleigh.
The team at Suffolk Medical Clinic
The proprietors of Suffolk Medical Clinic are Dr Anthony O’Neill and his wife Jenny, a Registered General Nurse. They have been successfully established since 1999. Dr Anthony qualified at London’s Royal Free Hospital in 1980 and has vast experience, specialising in dermatology. His wide knowledge of skin disorders and minor cosmetic surgery has allowed him to extend his expertise into cosmetic medicine and aesthetic treatments. Jenny qualified at University College London in 1985 and has a special interest in dermatology, with comprehensive experience in the beauty, hairdressing and cosmetics industries. THE SCIENCE
Cavitation is a natural phenomenon based on lowfrequency ultrasound. The ultrasound produces a strong wave of pressure to fat cell membranes which cannot withstand this pressure and disintegrate into a liquid state. Cryolipolysis destroys fat cells by subjecting them to low temperatures. It is good for February/March 2015 Vanilla

worked at L’Oreal for eight years as product development and logistics manager. I’ll be honest, I was slightly nervous but the warm greeting by the team at Suffolk Medical Clinic immediately put me at my ease. I felt I was in safe, professional hands, with their vast experience and promise of high-quality care before, during and after treatment, my worries evaporated. I filled in a questionnaire and we went through my answers thoroughly. Jenny talked me through the process step by step, explaining in detail exactly what the treatment involved. 3D-LipoMed is said to be one of the most advanced treatments for targeted fat reduction and skin tightening – especially good for tums, bums and thighs. It utilises the latest-generation technology, ultrasound cavitation and cryolipolysis (fat freezing), which are widely claimed to be among the most effective cellulite reduction and localised fat-loss techniques available. Suffolk Medical Clinic is the only clinic in East Anglia to use the 3D-LipoMed advanced medicalgrade system.
Dramatic results: After 8 sessions of Cavitation and 3D-Dermology
particularly stubborn pockets of fat, e.g inner thighs and bingo wings. Both processes result in the break down of fat cells which are metabolised by the body. Dannee performed the treatment and began by measuring around the abdomen and taking photos. Then she marked it out in four sections and applied ultrasound gel to the first. The ultrasound cavitation head, strapped to Dannee’s hand, was placed on the skin and with deep, circular movements the treatment began. It was very relaxing, no pain, just a wonderful stomach massage. Then to finish, Dannee changed to the endermologie headpiece, the suction was turned up and, using a suction and rolling action, she worked across my stomach until the skin had turned a nice pink colour. THE RESULTS
The area was cleaned of gels and oils and the final measuring
took place. WOW. I’d lost 3cm off the area, a great success from just one treatment. Clients who had a further five treatments were said to have lost around 6-8cms! I was told to drink 1.5 litres of water during the rest of the day and have a healthy light meal in the evening, but that was it, no aftercare. When I got home I tried on a pair of trousers which had become slightly uncomfortable after my Christmas indulgences and I was thrilled when they felt loose around the stomach. Definitely the result I was hoping for, and will I recommend this to my friends? ABSOLUTELY! The cost per treatment is £150 and courses of 6 – 8 treatments are recommended for the best results. No need for regret... thanks to Laser Tattoo Removal at Juliette John Cosmetic Laser Clinic
illa Van PORT RE
T
HERE HAS BEEN a surge in tattoo popularity in recent years – an estimated one in four British adults has one. This number is set to increase in the future if we are to follow US trends. Female celebrities like Cheryl Cole, Angelina Jolie and Kelly Osbourne are also known to be big fans of body art. If you don’t have one yourself then you'll probably know someone who does. We’ve all made rash decisions we later regret, but it is really frustrating when one of those impulses is permanently inked on your skin. If you’re sheepishly sporting an homage to an ex-partner, an oversized ‘tribal’ design pulled straight from a tattoo book, or, God forbid, a surfing lizard commemorating your holiday in Ibiza 2005, then
38
you’ve likely fantasised about making the eyesore disappear. Leading plastic surgeons and dermatologists regard laser as the superior method for the removal of unwanted tattoos. At the Juliette John Cosmetic Laser Clinic, not only do they cater for the removal, but also for those seeking ‘fade downs’ – people who want their artwork altered or tattooed over at a later date by their own preferred tattooist.
T
HE CLINIC has recently announced the arrival of the very latest Ruby Q-Switched Laser ‘Sinon’ by Alma Lasers. This machine is in addition to the clinic’s existing Harmony XL laser which uses Q-switched 1064nm ND YAG and Q-switched 532nm KTP wavelengths, and enhances and extends their capabilities in
dealing with all colours as well as the usual blues and greens. In the majority of cases they are able to remove most tattoos – no one laser can remove all types of tattoo ink; that is why they use a combination of different lasers to ensure optimal results. Typical treatment sessions last between 5 and 40 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo. Most amateur tattoos require 3 to 5 treatment sessions at monthly intervals, whereas professional tattoos usually require 8 to 12 treatment sessions. HAVE YOU GOT AN UNWANTED TATTOO ? HEALTH
Go easy on your knees!
I
illa Van PORT RE
T
HE KNEE is one of the most easily injured joints, usually through arthritis, wear and tear, and overuse, through sport, work or daily routines. Understanding the risks is useful in helping to maintain strength and your freedom to move. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the important ligaments that stabilise the knee joint and women can be at higher risk of non-contact ACL damage. Women are physically more flexible than men after adolescence, whilst men typically gain more strength and power. Consequently there may not be sufficient muscle strength to keep joints stable in a women’s knee area. The lower strength
40
is compensated for by using ligaments to absorb force on the knee, increasing the risk of injury to that particular ligament. Changing direction rapidly, twisting or landing from a jump incorrectly can tear the ACL, making it a very common injury seen frequently in netballers, footballers and dancers. It is important to also be mindful of simple everyday activities - stepping awkwardly off a pavement or twisting the knee whilst racing to catch the bus or running to a meeting are examples of how a meniscal tear can occur. Your meniscus is a layer of cartilage in the knee joint that acts like a shock absorber between the bones in your upper and lower knee.
F YOU ARE EXPERIENCING knee pain and your ability to move is restricted, it’s important to find out how to treat the problem. Be sure to always seek treatment as soon as possible for pain or swelling, especially if you hear a “popping” noise and feel your knee give out at the time of an injury. The type of treatment your doctor recommends will depend on several factors, such as the severity of the injury, your age, general health, and activity level. Nuffield Health Ipswich Hospital offers a comprehensive range of orthopaedic services, extensive diagnostic and imaging facilities, and onsite physiotherapy. As experts in solving a vast range of muscle, bone and joint problems, we can help and advise you. Get in touch now on

Guinot Hydradermie2 Lift Deluxe Facial at Purity
The deluxe non-surgical face-lift that really does give your face a lift
G
UINOT'S Hydradermie2 Lift Deluxe facial is said to be the perfect anti-ageing combination of the world renowned Hydradermie2 treatments and when they say ‘deluxe’, they mean deluxe! There were plenty of stages to this complex facial – the treatment takes 1 hour and 45 minutes – so I'll try and be brief! The treatment began with a thorough skin consultation – my Guinot-trained therapist analysed my skin to pick the correct products to use during the facial. After a cleanse and light exfoliation, the chosen serum was applied – there are a range to help concerns from oiliness, dryness, dehydration, anti-ageing, sun-damage and pigmentation. Then the Guinot-patented machine came into play. Firstly ‘galvanic rollers’ were used, working up and down my face creating a slight tingling effect. The process creates a chemical reaction called ‘double ionisation’ which, encourages
46
the products into the basal layer of the skin. This was followed by another routine with the machine which aids the skins lymphatic drainage, creating a brighter complexion.
T
HEN THE STIMULATION part of the treatment began and works from the neck up to the forehead. Creating a slight pulling motion on the muscles, a ‘lift’ is created – good for those problem areas like the jowels, lip lines, eye and brow lines. After she had treated one side of my face, my therapist gave me a mirror so I could compare the two sides – I was amazed at the instant results. Next up, the high frequency phase. Another serum is applied and, using a glass electrode, worked into the skin. This produces antibacterial and germicidal benefits whilst also promoting the production of collagen and elastin cells. A relaxing, lifting massage followed, then an eye and face mask was applied while I enjoyed
a hand and arm massage. By now I was in heaven. THE RESULTS
After the treatment the results were instantly visible, I was genuinely quite shocked. My skin looking more radiant, lifted and hydrated. Even better was being told the facial continues to work for the next 7 hours. A course is recommended, just like going to the gym, one session is going to have limited results. The course is two treatments a week based over either 4, 5, or 6 weeks depending on the clients individual needs. Hydradermie2 Lift Deluxe Facial £69, Courses £336-£504 Purity

dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. BOTOX
Botox is a muscle-relaxing injection that helps to prevent the formation of new wrinkles and soften existing lines. These can be used on the forehead, ‘frown’ lines, and ‘crows feet’ around the eyes, and last for 3 to 4 months. Botox treatment can also be used in the armpits to help control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating, by blocking the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, when topical treatments do not work well enough. DERMAL FILLERS
AGEING
By using facial muscles repeatedly throughout our lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. The ageing process causes collagen and elastin production in the skin to reduce, so as we get older these areas of overuse become damaged and the lines become permanent. Dr Tallent has been treating clients with Botox and Before Botox
Dermal fillers are used to soften lines and wrinkles, and enhance the cheeks and lips. It is a hyaluronic acid based gellike solution, which is injected beneath the skin, usually in the lower part of the face. Dermal fillers can also plump the lips, creating a more defined lip border and adding fullness. The effects can last for 6 to 12 months. After Botox

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Sue Carter and her team at Image
CAN I MIX MY PRODUCTS WITHOUT COMPROMISING THEIR EFFECTIVENESS? It is OK to mix products in the palm of your hand prior to application. For example, mix moisturiser with your foundation to make it lighter in colour and coverage. However never mix a SPF lotion with another cosmetic product as you may compromise the effectiveness of the SPF and the level of protection it gives. It is also important to never mix products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid with a product which contain retinol or vitamin C as the acids break down the compounds making the product ineffective. Mixing salicylic or glycolic acid with other products can also bring about excessive exfoliation or cause irritation. I HAVE NOTICED A FEW AGE SPOTS APPEARING ON MY HANDS. WHAT CAN I DO TO TREAT THEM AND PREVENT MORE APPEARING? Age spots are the result of sun damage, so the best way to prevent further ones appearing is to use a hand cream that contains a minimum SPF 15. This will also reduce the collagen breakdown to the hands and prevent the skin thinning and wrinkling. You could also consider using skin lightening products to help with the appearance
50
of existing age spots. Treatments available to remove age spots are laser treatment and chemical peels. These work by breaking the pigment up and lifting it up from the deeper layer of the skin to the surface. You may find that age spots may scab over or become flakey, but this is a sign that the pigment has been broken down. Results will be permanent, as long as you protect your hands from further sun exposure. HELP! MY EYELINER ALWAYS SEEMS TO SMEAR! First off, make sure you are using a waterproof eyeliner, especially if your eyes water quite a lot. It could be that you have an oily skin or products you apply to your skin contain high levels of oil. To counteract this apply a setting powder to the area to absorb excess oils, then apply your eyeliner. You may also want to consider using a gel or liquid eyeliner rather than kohl eyeliner which contains natural oils and is more likely to smear. HOW SHOULD I SHAPE MY EYEBROWS? You should brush your brows in the direction they grow naturally. Then lightly sketch in tiny thin lines, to mimic your hairs, using a brow pencil for a stronger look, or brow powder for a more natural look. Work from the bottom of your inner brow upward, then fill in and create an arch by creating a point which should line up with the centre of your eye. Finally, finish by sketching tiny hair strokes in a downward motion from the arch to no lower than the outer corner of your eye. This prevents your eyes looking closed or droopy. n

The ‘one hour face lift’
The latest facial rejuvenation procedure at A & L Clinics explained
Before and after a Facial Thread Lift
A&L Clinics in Ipswich pride themselves on making the most up to date treatments available to their Suffolk clients. The newest, most-talked-about procedure is the thread face lift – a nonsurgical procedure which aims to ‘lift and re-define the face and tighten skin tissue’. The PDO Thread Lift is a minimally invasive treatment which addresses two primary facial ageing concerns: sagging skin and lines and wrinkles. The procedure uses bio-absorbable threads placed under the skin to lift and restore facial contours. Additionally, the threads stimulate the skin’s own collagen production process, resulting in a firmer and smoother appearance in the area treated.
52
According to Dr Lina, it is a safe and effective technique using polydioxanone thread, which has been used in the medical world for well over 15 years. The effects of a thread lift can last up to 3 years this is due to the increase of natural production of collagen and elastin. THE PROCEDURE
A&L begin with seeing a client for a consultation prior to commencing any treatment to discuss all options, take some clinical photographs for yours and their records and discuss what the client would like to achieve. Dr Lina is then able to advise the best option to achieve these goals and formulate a
treatment plan. The thread lift takes approximately an hour. The skin is cleansed and guide markers are drawn on the clients face to mark the route of insertion and path of the thread. The patient is given a small local anaesthetic after which the doctor inserts the suture under the skin to a depth of around three to five millimetres. When in place, the threads are then pulled slightly so that they “grip” the skin ie the cogs are engaged. The ends of the threads are then cut to beneath the skin surface. Immediately after the threads are placed you can begin to see the effects. There is usually some degree of swelling or bruising, however this is expected to subside within a couple of days of the treatment. THE RESULTS
The results will be immediate and continue to improve over the first 6 months. A&L recommend a follow-up review between 1-2 weeks of placement. The threads are slowly absorbed by the body in the next few months, which in fact helps to stimulate collagen production for a more prolonged smoothing and firming effect. For more information, including costs, or to book a no obligation consultaion with Dr Lina, please call A&L Clinics on 01473 287762.

KIN BLEMISHES such as thread veins, blood spots, sebaceous cysts, skin tags, Spider Naevus, milia, warts, age spots, moles and verrucas affect most of us at some time or other. Around two thirds of men and women will have at least one skin tag somewhere on their body before they reach the age of 65. But because most blemishes are harmless the NHS rarely removes them, leaving most people forced to live with them however annoying and unsightly they might be, which can really knock your confidence. Electrolysis has been recognised and respected for many years for its permanent hair removal benefits but now its versatility has become recognised as over 20 different skin blemishes can be quickly, safely and effectively treated. In my case, thread veins around the nose and cheeks and a few facial lumps and bumps had become more prominent of late. I wanted to get them sorted but felt it too frivolous a matter to concern my GP with. Maureen Gillanders came highly recommended – a freelance highly-qualified specialist in electrolysis with over 40 years experience. She has owned and run (very successfully) clinics in the UK and the Channel Islands, specialising in Advanced Electrolysis procedures and she was the first to introduce IPL technology for permanent hair reduction into the UK back in 1998. And there's not much
Maureen doesn’t know about skin blemishes – her vast experience in this area of cosmetic procedure is impressive. She has a very pragmatic approach, and clearly explains what results you can hope to achieve and how many sessions it will take.
A
DVANCED ELECTROLYSIS works by sending a current through the tip of an eyelash-sized probe either alongside or into the blemish. Maureen identified a few sebaceous cysts which were promptly ‘zapped’ and disappeared without trace a few days later. The thread veins were treated in stages across three 15-minute treatment sessions And down time? The treated area remained a little pink for a day but I followed Maureen’s precise after-care advice, not swimming or strenuously exercising for 24 hours, and the thread veins have reduced by around 75%. I’m really happy with the result. It was a quick and affordable process and with a single treatment priced at £50 – my only regret is not doing it sooner. Maureen works as a freelance electrologist at Image Salon on the last thursday of each month. Initial consultation is £30, treatments start at £50 for 15 minutes. To book an appointment with Maureen call Image Salon on 01473 222188.

Vision and clever design can transform a home but the challenge comes when designing for someone else
I
T IS A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY TO DESIGN someone else’s dream home. You have to know what your client wants before they do. This modern country family home was designed for a busy young family. The house is open plan with dramatic bi-fold doors both downstairs and upstairs that flood the house with light. The glass balustrade helps keep the feeling of openness throughout the house. Also all the colours and fabrics were carefully chosen to ensure a cohesiveness-nothing jars everything flows. The seating area was an idea of the clients. They had seen something similar on a holiday abroad. We designed and installed the bespoke sunken seating area to include funky textured patterns that helped to create a ‘not so serious’ vibe. The Eero Aarino chairs add a fun and quirky element to the scheme.
The couple enjoy entertaining so the table was designed and manufactured through Nelson Design UK by Salvation Furniture. The bench seat, also made through NDUK, is covered in a practical fabric that is scuff-proof and wipeable. Very practical for a busy family-life! The Stark Ghost chairs are the
In the design NDUK was careful to keep all corners smoothed or upholstered so no little heads were bumped when crawling into bed with Mum and Dad! perfect contrast to the lime-washed wood. But there are times when adults need their own space. We designed the bed to be placed in the centre of the room with the vanity ‘hung’ on the back of the headboard. The bed faces French doors with far reaching views over fields. The richly textured fabrics create a real boutique hotel feel to the room. Class is in the glass... what a transformation BEFORE...
WHERE: A large farmhouse, Mid-Suffolk CONTRACTOR: The Burgess Group THE PROBLEM: Cheap plastic windows did
nothing to enhance the clean lines and traditional look of this farmhouse-style home in a countryside setting. The overall effect of the stark white UPVC was one of a jarring budget product quite out of keeping with the feel of the property.
THE RESULT: A stunning transformation has been achieved by replacing the naff plastic windows with sympathetic slender sashes in timber and painting them a chic soft French grey. This elegant makeover has at its heart the company’s focus on superb design, quality craftsmanship and enhanced security. The final choice of window style and finish came about after a detailed discussion with the client on a range of factors including the architecture and age of the property, and the client’s personal taste and budget. Help was given to choose a colour for the timber windows to suit the decorative theme of the home and its surroundings. It’s interesting to note that only a few generations ago, window frames were coloured rather than white. Many clients are returning to that traditional style now, taking advantage of the company’s extensive palette including pastels and other contemporary shades.

You were the producer of Heart Breakfast. How different is it being a presenter? I used to be able to tell Dave what to do as his Producer, I can’t now! But I guess the main difference as a presenter is that I speak more! I love having a quick chit-chat with listeners that contact the show, so the extra interaction is the main difference and a lovely bonus.

What can people expect when they tune into you and Dave on Heart Breakfast? Dave and I like a laugh and so hopefully there’ll be plenty of that. We’re also very keen on a club classic so expect a sing-a-long. You must have to get up really early. What’s your secret for being so awake in the morning? A very loud alarm because I’m terrible at getting up! It goes off at 4.20am. Dave is way better! He gets into work February/March 2015 Vanilla
earlier than me. Yawning is banned, it’s a slippery slope to sleepiness once you start doing that. The cold walk to work helps loads and then once I’m in the studio, it’s fine! What do you like to do when you’re not at work? I do play drums – really badly! I can lose a couple of hours just tapping along to stuff. It doesn’t happen very often but I love those afternoons where you’ve nowhere to be and you can enjoy a laugh with friends and family at the pub. The pub needs to have good food and be dog-friendly so that my Puli, Sonny Jim, can come too. Where are your favourite places to hang out in Norfolk and Suffolk? Well we’re spoilt aren’t we? Ipswich Marina in the sunshine is gorgeous. I’m dying to take Sonny Jim for a long walk at Orford because it looks so pretty. I’ve promised myself I’ll do that this year. For shopping, I’ll pick Norwich – it has all the big names and loads of indie shops too - and I’ll always have a soft spot for Great Yarmouth, the market chips are the best! Tune into Heart Breakfast with Dave and Heidi every weekday morning from 6am on 96.4 & 97.1FM, DAB digital radio, at heart.co.uk and on the Heart app.

HERE’S a reason why @Twenty5 is the best restaurant in Ipswich (according to the customer reviews website TripAdvisor). This characterful little bistro on fashionable St Nicholas Street is bursting with friendliness and atmosphere. Chef/owners Mel and Nigel greet diners as dinner party guests and they’ve nailed the cheery welcome. On a windy wintry midweek evening @Twenty5 is bustling with regulars and walk-ins – including a couple of Town players – as well as a party of 10 in the upstairs room. They’re fully booked most weekends up to a month ahead – no mean feat for a newcomer provincial restaurant post-Christmas post-recession. The secret of their success – and the rave reviews online which have catapulted @Twenty5 to top of the charts – is that winning combination of fabulous food and a happy ambience. Starters such as a lovely salad of Gressingham duck, or salt and pepper squid with a tiny pot of aioli are light, tasty and expertly executed. Choosing from a menu stacked with wholesome favourites for a main – like chicken chasseur, slow roast pork belly with puy lentils or chilli prawn and crab linguine – alongside beer battered fish and chips, steak and the extraordinary house burgers, is not as easy as it seems. The daily specials are inventive and keep the steady stream of regulars very happy
– and there are many who come more than once a week. Chalked above the kitchen they offer off-menu treats like succulent lamb rump with a huge pile of black olive mash and a garnish of a nicoise salad of green beans and roasted tomatoes, or pan-fried venison with fennel and poached cherries, with a cheeky swirl of chocolate – or an exquisite pan-fried and fabulously fresh, sea bass on a bed of dill crushed new potatoes accompanied by asparagus finished with salsa verde.
T
HE RESTAURANT is bright and buzzing. The super friendly waiting staff, in jeans, white Converse and long linen aprons, glide about the rooms – upstairs, downstairs and in the heated marquee covering the courtyard garden, adorned with sparkly lights. Nothing flaps the affable attenders to each table – and the chefs and waiting staff all pass by to share genuine interest in the food, its freshness and flavours. The desserts are all good favourites – executed with style and imagination – like banoffee pie, crème brule, sticky toffee pudding or warm chocolate brownie. @Twenty5 has found its niche – lovely food, lovely people, lovely place. A lot of hard work and passion has paid off and they deserve the accolades of their many fans. REVIEWER: LOUISE CULLEN

Sue Tasker founder of gift website pressi.co.uk
Sue launched Pressi.co.uk in 2013, offering an instant way to send a gift voucher by text or email and allowing you to ‘shop local’ from anywhere in the world, from £5 to £550.
It seems Suffolk is bursting with innovation and creative businesses. What first gave you the idea for Pressi? It certainly is and I am privileged that so many are Pressi partners! I was working in corporate travel and we were trying to source an instant gift to send to clients and could not find anything suitable – it sowed a seed. I wrote a story board and approached local agency Shorthose Russell – who were, and continue to be, fabulous! That meeting started a very fun and intense process. We created the brand – purple (my Cadbury’s addiction); the name was hubby’s idea (in concept stage it was ‘e gift’) and the logo
was designed by our daughters Charlotte and Victoria... I still have that little piece of paper! Was it a surprise to you how well the idea took off? Absolutely! And every day there are developments that continue to fuel my drive and enthusiasm for Pressi. Inevitably there have been challenges, but interest from national brands and respected independent traders has been overwhelming. There’s still work to do… but Rome was not built in a day as they say! What have been your business highlights so far? There have been several... Leonidas Chocolates being our first partner (we spent time in Belgium when we were growing up and my late father used to treat us to the delights of Leonidas chocolates and strawberry marzipan). A call from Selfridges in the early
stages, discussions continue… Recently some great coverage in the Guardian, endorsing their support for new and independent business and acknowledging our support of charities. Currently, a pending meeting with a highly respected national brand... What are your plans for Pressi? To continue growth nationally – we currently have gift partners in Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Yorkshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Cornwall, London, Shropshire and Marrakech! To establish it as the instant gift platform of choice. Develop our work with charities (we donate a small percentage of every transaction) and to expand the business so more of my family can be involved. Plans are underway to establish a subsidiary, Pressi Voucher Solutions, that will facilitate the requirements of boutique hotels for their own vouchers. There is definitely a gap in the market for a provider who is responsive, consumer-focused and realistic not greedy with the commercials. Hot off the press is an agreement with The Crown at Woodbridge. What is your favourite way to spend a day off? Heading east, a ‘coffee stop’ in the comfort of Kesgrave Hall, a walk along the river at Snape and some retail therapy, followed by dinner at a family favourite, The Lighthouse in Aldeburgh ■
