This popular market is now firmly established in the Ipswich calendar, marking the start of the summer on the Saints and the Ip-Art Festival. The Saints is the perfect backdrop for the vintage and craft market. The stalls celebrate an eclectic mix of handmade products the majority of which are locally sourced – from jewellery to textiles, vintage clothes to ceramics. Many of the local shops will be open so it makes a great destination to visit and lots of the eateries will be open all day, so breakfast, lunch and tea readily available. See page 31.

All sections of the town connect together, enabling one flowing experience
CALLING ALL QUEENS AND SUPPORTERS
Woodbridge Carnival, back on 4th July, is looking for entries to the fun fancy dress Carnival Queen contest. Anyone of any age can participate and local groups, clubs and individuals are encouraged to dress up to compete for a £500 donation to their chosen charity or community group. Entrants are invited to create their look in the spirit of the Carnival, which has a Tudor theme this year. All ‘Queens’ will form part of the parade through the town starting a 4pm. Entry forms can be found at choosewoodbridge.co.uk/carnival
MADE WITH LOVE AT ST ELIZABETH HOSPICE
St Elizabeth Hospice has launched a new shop with a twist – all items sold will be handcrafted by patients, volunteers and supporters. The new Made With Love shop is located in the Day Centre at the Hospice in Foxhall Road, Ipswich and sells an eclectic mix of items, from cushions and cards, to wooden plates and dog beds – and anything and everything in between. All the money raised from the shop will go towards providing vital care to more than 2,000 local people living with a progressive illness every year and support for their families.

AN ADVANCED VISION FOR IPSWICH An advanced Vision for Ipswich has recently been presented which builds on an original plan drawn up in 2013 and develops it further; giving finer details to the work that is needed to ensure the area prospers. Ipswich Central, the town centre Business Improvement District (BID) company, has worked on the original plans, and is now delighted to present them to the people of the town. In the plans to transform and regenerate the experience of those visiting the town centre, radical changes are proposed which include centralising the retail offering in the town, developing around 2,000 new homes and building high specification office accommodation. Other proposals include a stunning tree lined walkway in Lloyds Avenue, riverside walkways
and the creation of a number of links which will connect all sections of the town together, enabling one flowing experience. Terry Baxter, Chairman of Ipswich Central, said: “Our organisation, representing over 620 town centre businesses, is committed to being part of a broad partnership to help lead our town centre into a more prosperous future. We are ready to play a full role in delivering the Vision on behalf of our members, but we cannot do it alone. “We do not have all the answers. What we do know is that the transformation of places involves bold decisions around a commonly agreed plan. We are starting that process for Ipswich today. By presenting these proposals to the town, we are calling upon on all those who share our ambition, to unite and make this Vision a reality.”

Our favourite fashion accessories shop, on the Ipswich Waterfront, is celebrating its fifth anniversary, along with Vanilla, this year. Megan McCusker caught up with its owner, Lynn Turner.
L
YNN TURNER, had always been interested in fashion, but had no prior experience in the retail industry – she taught dance for thirty-five years and had worked in sales, marketing and events for local publisher, Archant. But five years ago the shop space within the newly-built DanceEast building became vacant by chance and Lynn leapt at the opportunity to do something different – for her the chance ‘came at exactly the right time’. Lynn had always longed for the freedom of self-employment and the luxury of being her own boss. She quickly became fascinated with the retail business, priding herself on sourcing unique ranges

of jewellery and other accessories. ‘You’ve got to love people if you’re going to work in a shop’ says Lynn. As Cake and Catwalk is an independent boutique, the importance of providing excellent customer service is key.
D
ESCRIBING the last five years as a ‘joy’, for Lynn the highlights have been the customers – building relationships with people, and on occasion, winning over the more ‘challenging’ ones. She also enjoys acting as a mentor for young people, encouraging confidence through opportunities of work experience in her shop. When asked what she has learned along the way, Lynn
A
REAL COMMUNITY player, Lynn is passionate about the growth and development of the town – she says ‘Ipswich is in my heart’. As well as gathering support from people from all walks of life to discuss the town's potential for development, Lynn is also training to become a town pastor – contributing to the safety of the young people of Ipswich. Looking back over the last five years, would she do it all again? ‘Definitely. Perhaps a few things a little differently… but you learn as you go and the experience is so rewarding.’ Vanilla June/July 2015

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAKE & CATWALK
emphasises the importance of resilience and admits that, ultimately, hard work and determination are the key to success. Plans for the future, hopefully involve expanding into a second shop, allowing Lynn to bring a different edge to her distinctive collection. She wants to work more with local, independent artists and designers, giving them the opportunity to promote themselves and their work. There are no plans to turn Cake and Catwalk into a chain though! ‘The personal touch and being connected with people is extremely important to me,’ explains Lynn, so any subsequent shops would need to be close by so she could remain hands-on.

Travel specialists, Idelo Travel have seen a surge in bookings for the Greek Islands this year, as tour operators have been offering some amazing bargains. Their advice is to a) book now for 2016 if you want the best prices for the school holidays and b) opt for Thailand if you’re looking for the best value for money. Likewise, appointments are getting snapped up The Travel Clinic as gap year students, businessmen and families seek critical advice on travel health and vaccines for the more far flung destinations.
NAME CHANGE Sisters, Beth and Hannah have got their thinking caps on as they need to come up with a new moniker for their coffee shop due to a name conflict with a national chain. They’ve got until the autumn to make the change so if you’ve got any good suggestions let them know!

N
ow in its sixth year, the St Peters Street Summer Market will be held on Sunday 21st June. “The markets have given an added dimension to the street
in terms of marketing the Saints as an area for independent business and an alternative to the generic high street. It has enabled us to raise our profile locally and it has followed that visitor numbers are up.” Cathy Frost, Loveone.

“Getting the right information to make sure our money worked well for our daughter and stayed in the family was easy, especially with our solicitor’s free fact finding meeting”
Keeping hard-earned money in the family with flexible trusts OUR PROBLEM: We were thinking about the future and how to make sure our children are financially protected now and after we’re gone. Our daughter and her husband are starting a family, and we thought we might help them out with some money to move to a bigger house. Then my wife, Susan, met with a friend whose daughter had just been through a nasty divorce – her husband had been entitled to a share of everything, even the investment our friend had made into her daughter’s home. While we love our son-in-law and are confident in our daughter’s marriage, the news left us wondering whether giving them money for their home was really the best way of protecting her personally. RICHARD, WOODBRIDGE
34
HOW IT WAS SOLVED: Susan and I have always done everything we can to make our children’s lives comfortable. So with the news that we were going to be grandparents, we started thinking about what we could do to help out in this latest phase of our daughter’s life. She lived in a one bedroom flat with her husband, which was going to be a very tight squeeze when the baby came along. We were all set to give a sum of money to help them move into a house when Susan’s friend told us about her daughter’s financial predicament and how frustrated she was that her hard-earned money had been divided out of the family during the divorce, leaving her daughter less than settled. Talking about Vanilla June/July 2015
REAL LIVES
it afterwards, we decided that, perhaps, we needed to rethink. We prepared our wills with Barker Gotelee about ten years ago – the service was straightforward and efficient and the offices at Martlesham are very easy to get to, so we knew who we could turn to for some friendly advice. Even better, I knew the initial consultation would be free, so I gave the solicitors a call to explain our concerns. We arranged an informal fact finding meeting with Nicky Sunderland in the private client team for the following week.
A
S SUSAN AND I discussed our situation with Nicky she quickly put us at ease, confirming that ours was a common concern and that there were solutions that could be put in place to help. After going through the options, we decided to set up a flexible trust for the benefit of both of our children. This would effectively remove the money from our estate after seven years and so would be a smart move for inheritance tax planning purposes too. We could then set up an interest free, long term loan from the trust to our daughter, so that she could buy a bigger family home. Nicky explained that the loan could be seen as a debt owed to the trust by our daughter, so would be better protected in the event of divorce. We went away and talked through our plans with our children, confirming who we would be appointing as trustees June/July 2015 Vanilla
and who would be beneficiaries, and we went through the terms with them. Nicky also sent us a letter, summarising everything we had talked about. This was really handy to refer to during our discussions and it reminded us that we needed to prepare an accompanying letter of wishes that would detail our intentions for the trust. Once we were happy with our plans, we arranged another meeting to go through all of the detail with Nicky. Then we left it with her to prepare the legal document, speaking with her by phone once or twice to amend it here and there. When the final trust document was ready, we popped in to Barker Gotelee to sign it. They provided witnesses, so we didn’t need to worry about asking
someone to come along with us. We’ve got copies of the document and Nicky has placed the original, together with our letter of wishes, in the Barker Gotelee strong hold for us free of charge, so we know they’re in safe hands. We both feel so much more at ease with our plans now that we’ve formalised them with Barker Gotelee. We know our money can benefit our children, regardless of their circumstances, and both our children and their partners are comfortable with our plans. We also took the opportunity to review our wills with Nicky and to name our lasting power of attorneys – especially as we needed to add our new granddaughter into the mix. Now we know we’ve taken care of things for the foreseeable future. ■

h! Goody! We are off to Ipswich Audi again to get behind the wheel of the A3 Cabriolet. A fine day and the first move is to get the top down. Simple electronic control and 17 seconds! In fact the roof can be operated at up to 31mph so one does not even need to wait for a convenient set of traffic lights. This is a vehicle in which to be seen – a stylish car, oozing quality with the top down. I’d better look my best, so a quick check in the vanity mirrors is required and what a nice touch – they are illuminated. A simple, inexpensive convenience – so useful. The S-line is based on the Sport model but with some great extras, such as some very pretty alloy wheels. (at no extra cost) again, a thoughtful touch. The S-line has nice identifying features – the logo on the doorsills, embossing on the seat upholstery, and various inlays of brushed stainless steel. But the item, which does it for me, is the steering wheel. The lower section is flattened off giving extra space between legs and wheel. And of course being Audi, the wheel is also ‘multi-function’. This includes the ability to change gear using the paddles (in reach of one’s fingers) behind the wheel. Great for the times when driving a sports car like a sports car! With Quattro four-wheel drive and the 1.8 TFSI engine there’s no worries about performance or

And with the exterior features like the bright LED day running lamps, exhaust trims and spoilers, the car looks as good as it actually is. But my all-time favourite feature in the A3 line-up is the electro-mechanical parking brake. Rather than an old fashioned lever, the parking brake is a pull-switch in the centre consul. The car senses the incline, which gear it is in, engine speed and so on, so when its time to drive away, that’s all you do! The car will stop itself from rolling downhill and release the brake at the opportune moment. No more bumper bumps for Cousin Hermione! ■

ESPA Age Defying facial at Mia Carmen at David Lloyd Leisure
I
T’S BEEN FAR TOO LONG since I treated myself to a facial, so was thrilled when Mia Carmen invited me along to try the ESPA Age Defying Facial, I was looking forward to relaxing and being pampered, I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It was a chilly, wet Wednesday morning, Hannah my therapist greeted me and led me through to the treatment room, which was dimly lit with candles and smelt enchanting, the couch was heated – I instantly felt chilled and warm and couldn’t wait for the experience to begin. The facial began with a detailed skin analysis using the ESPA Skin Vision lamp. Hannah asked me what I wanted to achieve with this facial and talked me through each stage of the treatment. We decided to pay a lot of attention to the eye area, starting with the Bio-active Eye Cleanser, later followed by the Lift and Firm Intensive Serum (which is powerful and effective and enhances the active results of the eye moisturiser). To complete the eye treatment the Lift and Firm Eye Moisturiser was applied, this hydrating essential helps smooth and re-contour the delicate eye area and helps to provide an instant lift.
A
GE DEFYING FACIALS focus on naturally improving the condition of the skin, to give longterm results. Hannah decided my skin was an oily/combination, so used the appropriate products.
46
To begin with double cleansing techniques were applied combining gentle exfoliation and an acupressure facial massage, which was amazing. More deep cleansing continued and an intensive face mask pasted on. While the face mask was taking effect, Hannah gave me a relaxing and therapeutic oriental head massage using Pink Hair and Scalp mud this also included the shoulder and neck area. This was incredible – I honestly would have been happy to stay there all day and was sad when it came to an end. A specific moisturising and skin protection was then
applied especially to suit my skin’s needs. Hannah gave me a list of all the products she used and recommended. A few were purchased! The result was very good, not only did I feel relaxed, my skin glowed, felt hydrated, soft and fresh – everything I hoped for. The effect lasted a good few days and I did receive some lovely compliments! Hannah was an excellent therapist, I shall definitely be back and will not leave it so long. Espa Anti Ageing Facial £55 for 60 minutes. Worth every penny!

Ultimate Facial with Microdermabrasion at Hunter House Clinic REVIEW: ALICE MANNING
➊ THE LOWDOWN
Whether you are fed-up with breakouts, want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles or simply want your skin to look healthier, this multi-benefit treatment is just brilliant for all ages. Combining Glo Therapeutics’ hard-working products with microdermabrasion and a superficial peel, your skin is given the full works. The Flower Enzyme peel is milder and perfect for peel ‘beginners’ while the Enzyme will transform oily and mature skins. True beauty devotees can opt for a lactic acid peel for maximum results.

➋ THE CLINIC
Hunter House at Martlesham, next to BT’s Adastral Park, has got the perfect set-up. Free parking right outside – discreet but easy-to-get-to premises. The clinic specialises in aesthetic procedures, skin rejuvenation and protection along with regular beauty treatments.
➌ THE TREATMENT
The process begins with a thorough cleanse with the most heavenly-scented Glo Therapeutics cleanser. Once clean the microdermabrasion begins. Essentially, the skin is being exfoliated to remove the
dead cells that leave it looking lacklustre. This is done with mechanical exfoliation via a pulsating hand-held device which is taken over the forehead and down over the nose, cheeks, neck and décolletage. It isn’t at all painful, more mildly uncomfortable but it only lasts about 10-15 minutes in total. Clean, smooth skin creates the perfect surface for the peel and the therapist will tailor this to your skin type and desired results. Whichever peel you opt for you will experience a mild ‘tingling’ sensation. It doesn’t last long; we’re literally talking 5 minutes. This then makes way for a soothing or calming mask and a relaxing chest and neck massage while the mask gets to work. To finish, bespoke skincare products are applied, suited to your skin’s needs (I had a gorgeous Glo Therapeutics Vitamin B5 Vanilla June/July 2015

➍ THE RESULTS
Never have I seen so many results after just one treatment. When I went to bed I noticed how soft, smooth and healthy-looking my skin was and by morning it was visibly more radiant. So much so I skipped foundation and went bare-faced. This is

a results-driven facial – the ‘medical-grade’ products used by Hunter House are proven to do what they claim to do, unlike many beauty products that go little further than a pamper. But, if it’s an indulgent pamper you’re after it ticks that box too, as you get to enjoy a massage while the products get to work, bliss! YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Sue Carter and her team at Image
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP THE DARK CIRCLES UNDER MY EYES? Simply put, periorbital dark circles are a result of the thin layer of skin below your eyes showing the blood vessels and the blood they contain. Usually you can help improve the appearance by making sure that you get your full eight hours sleep a night and make sure that you drink two litres of water every day, as dark circles are made worse by dehydration and a build up of toxins. You might also want to try using an eye product that contains caffeine, as it can act as a ‘pick me up’ for the eye area and help to reduce puffiness. Also worth a mention are products that contain skin plumping vitamins C and K. Salon treatments which target the eye area may also help as massaging the area can help to reduce puffiness and eliminate toxins. IF I USE MAKEUP WITH SUNSCREEN IN IT, DO I STILL NEED TO APPLY SUNSCREEN SEPARATELY? That all depends on the SPF of the sunscreen in your makeup you are using. If your make up contains an SPF 15 or higher, then it should generally be ok as long as you apply it evenly. If your makeup contains an SPF lower than 15 you will need to apply a sunscreen underneath your
52
make up. It is recommended that we all use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher everyday even in the winter months to prevent the skin from UVA and UVB damage and accelerated skin ageing. It is also worth remembering that SPF is not accumulative, so if your foundation contains SPF 10 and your powder contains SPF 8 the maximum protect you are receiving is SPF 10. Also, sun exposure degrades sunscreen properties, which means that you will need to reapply every few hours. We recommend using a mineral powder, or mineral veil, as it contains a natural SPF 15 and can be easily dusted on top of your make up without making it look too heavy. WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE ACNE SCARRING? The way you treat your acne scarring will depend on your skin colouring. If you have fair skin you will usually end up with red marks and if you have a darker skin then you may find that your scarring is darker than you natural skin tone. So, for paler skin tones, go for an exfoliating treatment which contains salicylic or glycolic acid which will help to reduce the redness of your scars. If you have a darker skin tone then you might want to consider using a cream which has a lightening ingredient to help even out your skin tone. If your scarring is deep you may need to consider a treatment that will help to regenerate the dermal layer of the skin – boosting your skins rapid repair and collagen, which in turn will help reduce the deep scarring. n

We all know that we need to protect our skin against the damaging effects of UVA rays proven to cause premature signs of ageing, but often it just doesn’t occur to us to wear sunscreen on our faces unless we’re out in hot sun. This weightless fluid, with 100% mineral filters, provides SPF 50 protection, whilst the formulation enhances skin’s natural tone and boosts overall radiance. SkinCeuticals sunscreens are formulated to provide true broad spectrum UVA/ UVB protection to the skin. Their advanced line of sun protection features Z-Cote®, transparent zinc oxide, so the products are light and nongeasy – not what you’d expect of a high factor sunscreen. It also gives an extra bonus of a more luminous looking complexion. Highly recommended for all skin types, not just sun-sensitive ones. 1. Summertime Blues Sanderson Home Candytuft Wallpaper
Welcome summer with crisp whites and cool indigo blues. Nothing says summer like blue and white. Here are few hand pick choices to get your summertime blues!
Surprisingly mono prints are big at the moment. Zoffany’s Cochin Indigo is a classic ‘tree of life’ motif and would sit beautifully in an oak panelled room as curtains or provide a bold statement as upholstery or cushion fabric. Another mono print that is brighter and fresher, takes its inspiration from the classic Sanderson Home print Candytuft.. Sanderson have re coloured and updated the design. Linwood also gives us another offering of indigo and white with the Whitewood Collection. This collection has a number of different scales of pattern to work with which is invaluable. Of course it wouldn’t be summer without checks. Romo shows us how checks are done with the Melbury Collection full of coordinating stripes and ginghams! Don’t be afraid of the blues!

This stunning vignette uses Little Greene Thai Sapphire on the furniture to create a fearless and confident colour scheme that no one would tire of. We also recommend Little Greene Basalt or Hick’s Blue, if Thai sapphire is too strong. Crisp white walls are a perfect foil to all the fabrics shown. There are several ‘whites’ to suggest, from Slaked Lime 105 to Shirting 129. If you love making a piece of furniture your own and you love indigo, try Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Artissimo. 2015 HOME TRENDS
MODERN VINTAGE
T
here is no doubt that retro trends in home furnishings are back in a big way. Have you ever heard if you save your clothes or furniture for 20-30 years the styles will come back in fashion? While this may be true, sometimes the styles don’t come back in the same exact materials, colours or execution of the design but the original intent does resurface. Interior design is similar to fashion in that designers gain inspiration from the past and fuse it with modern details and inspiration.

CHOOSING AN ERA Retro furniture is all about digging into the past eras of design styles and choosing the ones that you loved the best. Many homeowners like to choose mid-20th century modern furniture that focuses roughly from 1930s – 1960s. While there is also a trend for 70s and 80s periods as well, decide what characteristics you enjoy and that fit your design style. The furniture of each era have their share of patterns, colours, finishes and pop culture appeal that will resonate with every homeowner differently.

Tips to consider when decorating with authentic retro furniture If you decide to use authentic period furniture from garage sales, hand-me-downs or from vintage stores, ensure you are safe when painting, refinishing, or changing the look of old furniture. Especially children’s furnishings can have lead-based paint, toxic varnishes and might not have the safeguards in place that would be in modern children’s furniture. Keep this in mind if you’re refinishing old furniture or plan to buy children’s cribs, changing tables and other adolescent furniture. Vanilla June/July 2015

The Artisan Butcher, aka Jamie Willows, discovered his passion for butchery at the tender age of 13. Learning his trade in High Street butchers he developed a passion for the subject but harboured an interest for reviving more traditional techniques. Further moves in Jamie’s career, including working as Head Butcher at Jimmy’s Farm, fuelled his passion for working with native, rare and traditional breeds and inspired him to develop the artisan skills of curing, smoking and charcuterie. Jamie has now got his own butchery – Rose House Butchery – in Rose Lane, just off St Peters Street. Located in a 16th
Century stable block, the setting provides a fantastic backdrop for a butcher specialising in traditional breeds and by-gone techniques. Their aim is to bring you the highest quality meat, of course, but the butchery also offer a variety of courses and demonstrations which consider every aspect of butchery – ideal for foodies out there wanting an insight into the art of butchery. artisanbutcher.co.uk

HE VERY FIRST thing to say about The Unruly Pig – undoubtedly one of Suffolk’s most sought-after new foodie haunts – is the Bad Piggy is absolutely amazing. The Bad Piggy is their most fabulous Rhubarb Negroni – a delight of homemade rhubarb cordial and naughty spirits and a must-have kickstarter for almost everyone arriving at this beautiful old pub on the road between Snape and Woodbridge. Nothing could be better, sitting out on the beautiful decking in the Suffolk sunshine, sipping on this or one of the other wonderful non-alcoholic pre-dinner drinks crafted by the clever people at the Pig. The passion fruit spritzer was alcohol-free and just delicious. A lot of thought has gone into a cocktail and pre-dinner drinks menu which makes dining here everso special. The Unruly Pig languishes under the triumphant ownership of Suffolk’s most effervescent host, Brendan, dubbed ‘super foodie’ by the Sunday Times and a whirlwind of fun and friendliness to all his guests. The walls are decorated with his eclectic and intriguing art collection – including a stunning Sixties reportage photo
of John Lennon on stage. Brendan darts between tables with advice and angles on his carefully collected menu of the freshest food in season and his conviviality is contagious – everyone seems to be having the time of their life at the Pig. The food is superb. This is pub fare on a whole other level. Small plates of asparagus spring rolls with hollandaise, garlic and chilli tiger prawns, chicken and chorizo croquettes with garlic aioli, rare beef and bone marrow crostini will tempt everyone into the menu. The pulled pork ravioli starter came with a perfect pea veloute and the charred tuna carpaccio was perfectly matched with cucumber, sea lettuce and piquant capers. The Pig’s trade mark is the Inka Grill – charcoal roasting at 400+ degrees for an amazing flavour and tenderness. The rib eye steak - with garlic and thyme roasted potatoes, shallot puree and watercress – was divinely soft and gorgeously seasoned. The revelation however was the pork T-bone steak which was juicy, flavoursome and succulent – really worth trying. Served with a huge portion of creamy macaroni cheese, seasoned with mustard and a delicious crumb topping, this was a Vanilla June/July 2015

real showstopper. To add to the feel-good factor each pork steak merits an Unruly Pig donation to the nearby Riding for Disabled Centre at Hollesley.
V
EGETARIANS AREN’T overlooked at the Pig – there’s a separate vegetarian menu – and as the earth’s offerings change with the seasons, the very best local produce is reinvented by the head chef. Fish favourites include fillet of hake with mussel beurre blanc and samphire or whole sea bream with jersery royals, pickled cockles and capers – again seared to perfection on the Inka Grill. The puddings are gorgeous. The pistachio and olive oil cake with lemon verbena sorbet was just stunning – a little tempest of flavours, light as feather sponge and zippy citrus ice. The chocolate expresso custard with meringue, chocolate sauce and tuille was a chocoholic soother. Other choices include seasonallyfresh rhubarb mousse with basil jelly, poached rhubarb and white chocolate Grenache or the sweetest-sounding – the Pineapple upside down cake – with caramel pineapple, honeycomb, pineapple and rum curd. Set on the outskirts of Rendelsham forest and just a short hop from Sutton Hoo and Shingle Street, the Unruly Pig is undoubtedly going to fare very well feeding those on the way back or on the way to a lovely walk in our beautiful countryside. But for its fabulous food and irrepressible friendliness of its team, the Unruly Pig has to be a destination in its own right – not least to try that fantastic Bad Piggy.

HE WHITE LION at Aldeburgh is a traditional seaside hotel, overlooking the fishermens’ huts just by the 16th century Moot Hall. The hotel’s Brasserie Bleu is unpretentious and unassuming while the food, fabulously and meticulously curated by the talented head chef Ben Hegarty, is just breath-takingly good. Looking out to the stormy clouds over the North Sea, getting happy with an aperitif of a wonderful Adnams Copper House Cooler (a beautiful cocktail of gin, elderflower, lemon and mint) or the Longshore Breeze (with Adnams award-winning vodka, cranberry and grapefruit) – this is a gem for foodies, hiding in
plain sight on the Suffolk coast. The appetisers promised this would be a meal to savour and remember – gorgeous warm chunks of chorizo marinated in honey and rolled in sesame seeds, and a thick and unctuous homemade guacamole, spirited with lemon grass and served with crisp coriander crouts. The presentation of the food is just picture perfect and a great deal of thought has gone into a descriptive menu which is traditional French brasserie fare with lashings of seaside. The seafood platter (as a starter or a main course) was piled high with juicy prawns, crispy calamari rings, a generous mound of smoked salmon tartar and a Vanilla June/July 2015

smooth salty smoked trout pâté. In the shadow of the fishermens hut and their signs for ‘Fresh boiled crab and lobster’ this felt as fresh as the ocean breeze on the beach. Another starter specialty is their homemade salt beef, thick and flavoursome and balanced with the tiniest fragile crispy onion rings and a gorgeous creamy parmesan-infused horseradish. Also on the entrée menu, grilled sardines with a rainbow tomato salad and basil gremolata.

HE BRASSERIE classics are just lovely – a wonderful confit of duck leg with garlic, green beans, cherry purée and a perfection June/July 2015 Vanilla
of pomme anna was really satisfying and the coq au vin looked too good to eat, nestling on a bed of beautiful greens on the smoothest pomme purée and laced with an unforgettable sauce and tiny chunks of bacon and mushroom. Also on the list, the essential moules marinière and a beef bourguignon with roasted carrots. The brasserie classics are complimented by the British holiday favourites of fresh fish and chips, the catch of the day, homemade burger and the omnipresent rib eye steak, served here with café de Paris butter, fries, cherry tomatoes and a dressed salad. The desserts were every bit as artistic as every other dish
we tried – stunning plum and almond frangipane tart came with a spiced plum sauce and vanilla crème fraiche, and a sumptuous citrus and polenta cake was matched by a sweet lime curd and beautiful little rose buds of zesty mini meringues, gorgeous enough to distract from the totally tempting chocolate dipping platter to share – an assortment of homemade treats around a 70% Valrhona Noir sauce. The White Lion’s Brasserie Bleu is really worth a trip to the seaside – rain or shine – and a bracing stride along the front is definitely on the cards after such an impressive meal of beautifully presented food. A classic but easy-tofollow lamb recipe from Damien Lery, head chef at The Orwell Hotel
Spring rump of lamb roasted with chargrilled asparagus and Lyonnaise potatoes SERVES 4
4 Rump English lamb (500-550 g) 500g new potatoes 1 large spanish onion, thinly sliced 250 of garden peas, frozen 2 bunches of English asparagus 4 cloves of garlic Olive oil Butter Salt and pepper Thyme, mint, parsley
1 Cook the peas, drain them and blend with soft butter to make a smooth puree. Sieve and season. 2 Cook the new potatoes in salted water, until just turning soft, drain and cool. 3 Fry the onion in a little oil. Once it starts colouring, sprinkle over a teaspoon of sugar, some seasoning and one or two sprigs of thyme. When caramelised leave to cool. 4 Slice the potatoes thickly and

Yes Chef! pan fried them in oil until lightly coloured. Season, then add the onions and chopped parsley. Keep warm. 5 Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Drop in the asparagus for 4 minutes, then transfer straight into iced water to cool down. They should stay bright green. Drain and drizzle with some olive oil. Chargrill on hot grill pan until marked. Keep warm. 6 Heat some oil in a large frying pan. Season the lamb and fry fat side down for two minutes until crispy, then turn and cook for another two minutes. Add cloves of garlic and thyme or rosemary
and transfer to the oven at 185˚C for 12 minutes. Take out and rest for 5 minutes. 7 Assemble the plate. Put the warm pea puree on the bottom of the plate like a drag, add the potatoes on the top of the puree, and the sliced lamb on the top of the potatoes. Decorate with the asparagus. 7 Drain some fat off the lamb pan jus, heat up and add a dash of white wine or water and some freshly chopped mint… Et voilà! Jill Barrett Barretts of Woodbridge
My East Coast Life photograph taken in the bed department on the store’s opening day in 1969.
Did you ever imagine you would end up running the business? Not at all. Back in the late 80s my sister Jane was due to follow on from my mum and dad, but she met a man and ended up leaving for Brazil! So when my uncle Ray contacted me about seven years ago it was quite a shock. I'm grateful to Ray for wanting the store to stay independent and within the family.
What has been the biggest challenge? Jill Barrett took over the management of Barretts of Woodbridge in 2009 from her aunt and uncle. She lives in Woodbridge with her daughters Vicky and Annie and fiancé Michael, who joined Barretts as Store Manager in 2010.
Did you grow up in Woodbridge? Yes, although I was born in Norfolk we moved into the flat above the shop when we first opened in 1969. I was only two when we moved to Woodbridge so it’s really my home town.
What are your earliest memories of Barretts? Playing in the shop with my sister Jane, rolling down the carpet stands and hiding behind sofas! I can remember having a
I felt we needed to take the store in a new direction, making it more contemporary and fresh, whilst maintaining our charm and excellent customer service levels. We’ve put a new window into the main showroom, updated the website and launched an online shop, and we are in the process of refurbishing the bed department. We are always looking for new and exciting ranges, like the Edison light bulbs which are proving hugely popular. Michael and I attend lots of trade shows, seeking out the next big trend and making sure we keep Barretts a ‘mustsee’ destination for visitors to Woodbridge. It’s not been easy, especially through the recession and the growth of out-of-town developments and, of course, the internet. We’ve come far and

we are still on this journey, but it’s heartening when we hear customers saying how much the shop has changed, and how beautiful it looks.
How have you seen Woodbridge change over the years? In the last 20 years, Woodbridge has gone from being a sleepy and quaint market town, to being a vibrant and diverse centre for independent shops, fantastic pubs, restaurants and cafes. Thankfully it hasn’t been spoilt in the process. It’s still a lovely place to wander around and explore, especially the river front and Tide Mill areas.
What are your favourite hidden gems? We are regulars in Honey & Honey, an independent coffee house just up the Thoroughfare from us. Fabulous food and coffee, especially their sausage rolls and cheese scones! We enjoy our food, and we’re truly blessed with so many fantastic pubs restaurants in Woodbridge, all an easy walk from home – The Shapla, The Table, The Riverside, The Anchor and The Cherry Tree… the list goes on!
What do you like to do on a rare weekend off? We love walking and a quick trip up the Peak District usually re-charges the batteries. Daisy, our resident ‘Retail Terrier’ particularly enjoys a good day’s walking. ■
