The region’s premier county show, the Royal Norfolk Show, will once again showcase the very best of the region with a mix of live entertainment, shopping and great food and drink. Taking place on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th June at the Norfolk Showground, highlights for this year include the ever-popular Musical Ride of the June/July 2019 Vanilla

Around the showground will be hundreds of local retailers offering everything from luxury goods and clothing to garden furniture and cars. In between the thrills and tills, showgoers will be able to enjoy a host of local food producers in the Adnams Food and

Drink Experience, selling everything from sizzling sausages and tempting pies to creamy cheeses and posh pop. Building on last year’s successful mid-summer evening programme, the show will again stay open later. Visitors will be able to enjoy the show, stands and food and drink hall and then join the party at a new mini-festival featuring live country music on the Wednesday evening. Add to that thousands of livestock and horses, a host of outdoor experiences and you can see why this is the UK’s largest two-day county show! ● Tickets are on sale at royalnorfolkshow.co.uk with free car parking once again available.

he sun has got his hat on... hip hip hooray! At long last summer has arrived, out comes the sandals, light weight clothes and sun tan lotion. But what about our eyes? I’m not going to waffle on about the benefits of wearing UV protecting eyewear, we all know about it. We all love fashion, fun sunglasses, change them every season and very often have more than one pair. All great fun, unless you need prescription glasses. I’m sure most of you have had prescription sunglasses at some point, but they just never look the same. Until now! At Oculus we have a range of sunglasses that are also available with

prescription but with a twist. We only use Seiko sun lenses which are made to look exactly like normal sunglasses, very often with trendy mirror lenses as well. All of our sunglasses are made by the same frame designers that make our normal frames, so they make them to look good with or without prescription. As a Seiko lens specialist we also get a 50% discount on prescription sun lenses if you have purchased normal Seiko lenses from us in the previous 6 months – a discount which we pass straight onto our clients. Once again this year the hot sunglass styles are big, bold and in vibrant colours. Often the lens colour is fun too, rather than the normal grey or brown. So why not step into Oculus and step out into the sun with a smile and super cool sunnies! Jeff@Oculus

AMIKA

Exciting ladies’ boutique in charming Aylsham

A PASSION FOR FASHION, a long friendship and a love of Aylsham led Donna Sutch and Laraine Roxby to open an independent ladies boutique, Amika, in the market town three years ago. “We’ve been friends for many years, which is where the name of the boutique was born – Amika means female friend in Latin,” says Laraine. “Donna and I met 12 years ago when we worked together in ladies fashion and we quickly became firm friends. “Three years ago we sat down and talked about opening our own boutique and after we looked around we instantly fell in love with Aylsham and knew it was the place for us. It’s a beautiful charming town with a strong

sense of community and we were made to feel part of that from the very beginning. Many of our customers come to us for a girly shop, and then go to one of Aylsham’s lovely tea rooms. “We would describe our fashion as smart casual and ontrend. We stock a great line in jeans, jumpsuits, dresses, quirky separates, jewellery, handbags and scarves. We pride ourselves on the range of brands we have sourced from all over Europe which include ICHI, Garcia, Freequent and the stunning tribe&fable jewellery, to name but a few. “We consider ourselves to be average girls, we’re not models, but with over 20 years’ combined experience in the fashion industry

we know what works, and we always strive to help customers look their best. We’re very active on social media, with daily posts of new arrivals and current stock, both on Facebook and Instagram.” Donna says: “Many look to us for inspiration, whether it’s a new outfit for a night out or holiday, or a wardrobe refresh for the up coming season, we are here to help. Our customers are from all generations, we often have mothers and daughters shopping together, and even grandmothers too. There is no pressure selling and we believe there is no such word as ‘can’t’ in fashion. It should be fun and not too serious.” So what’s in at the moment, what should we be wearing? “Yellow is the colour for summer and we have some great yellow slogan T-shirts which look superb with a pair of jeans,” adds Donna. “The boutique is full of colour and colour is very big this summer – pinks, greens and blues – bright, bold and fun to wear.”

Colour is in at Albrow & Sons

T’S A NORWICH landmark, the pink building on All Saints Green that’s home to Albrows. This is an Aladdin’s cave of treasure, from gorgeous antique jewellery such as rings, necklaces, brooches, bracelets and pendants from every period, to silverware and one-off quirky pieces; each one with a fascinating and inspiring history. “We are a far cry from the run of the mill high street jewellers, where everything is so generic, dull and all the same,” says Harvey Albrow. “There seems to be very little originality on offer on the high street, but our pieces are always unique one-offs you won’t find anywhere else. “Jewellery is so personal and it makes a powerful statement. Wearing an original and standout piece says something about who you are; you never follow the crowd and want to be different. 1

2

This is what our customers what, they don’t want to wear what everyone else is wearing. The history of our jewellery makes it so interesting and gives it the kind of character you won’t find on the high street.” There is no shortage of character at Albrows. Take their Exclusive collection; beautiful, one-off pieces made in their own workshop. This range uses the most unusual loose gems sourced from all over the world and is sure to inspire everyone with its colour and flair. “Colour is back in, which is wonderful,” says Harvey. “In the past it was all white gold and diamonds, but now people are moving towards yellow and rose gold and more colourful gems such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires. It’s so much more interesting and gives more scope for individuality.” 3

The personal touch is another reason Albrows stands out from the high street crowd. “Our workshop doesn’t just carry out repairs and restorations, we can also design and create bespoke pieces, and source specific items from all over the UK. So if a customer has an idea of what they want, we go the extra mile to make it or find it for them. “Our customers come from all age groups and once they come in they are often customers for life. It starts with an 18th birthday gift, then a wedding, christening and wedding anniversaries. Beautiful antique jewellery never goes out of fashion – people come back for every special occasion and to find those unique pieces that speak to them.” ● Albrow & Sons, 10 All Saints Green, Norwich, NR1 3NA t: 01603 622569

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION Lindsay Furniss, owner of The Tannery in Norwich, tells Vanilla readers about her latest trip to Florence to visit one of the family-run workshops that produce the fantastic range of leather goods she sells.

L

AST SEPTEMBER I took some time to visit some of our suppliers in Italy, and in particular, Boldrini in Florence, one of the leather artisan workshops that makes the items we stock in The Tannery. They are a small family business, run by Roberta and Luca, but they make superb products for high profile brands all over the world. We have been working with Boldrini for eight years and I visit them at least twice a year. Ours is a wonderful close relationship, and I feel very much part of the family. As with the other factories we work with in Italy, Germany, France and Spain, their quality, skill and workmanship are superb. They use traditional techniques, so this is not mass production, it’s a creative process and they take enormous pride in what they do. Boldrini has an amazing factory and showroom and I arrive to a warm welcome from the family and breath in the heavenly scent of leather. I visit the factory to choose leather, colours and finishes for the next season and to look at their latest collection of samples for satchels, handbags, briefcases,

luggage, purses and wallets. Boldrini works with premium brands, so what they have to show me is always stunning. Working with Roberta and Luca we design our bespoke range of leather goods in the colours and finishes I think will best suit my customer base, with hand finishing and some touches I know will work well, such as longer shoulder straps. The leather is the very best, of course, and I know it has been correctly sourced. Walking around the factory and seeing the skill of the people working there is always one of the

best parts of my trip. It makes me realise that this level of quality is hard to find these days. After a hard day’s work the family and I retire to a restaurant for a meal and a glass or two of something to toast our day. There is always lots of fun and laughter – this is the way to do business, and their Italian hospitality is wonderful. It’s thrilling to see those designs I chose back in September now in The Tannery shops. Our loyal customers return again and again – they deserve the very best. ■ www.tannery.co.uk

“Changes to the existing laws look to end the ‘blame game’ and establish a timeframe to enable couples to ‘reflect’ on their decision”

Is the new ‘fault free divorce’ the right option for us? MY QUESTION: My partner and I have recently decided to separate from each other after 12 years of marriage. It ended on good terms; sadly we fell out of love with one another some time ago. We have both recently come to terms with it and realised that the best thing moving forward is to get a divorce. We’ve seen in the news about the “fault free divorce” legislation which is being introduced and would like to know more about it and whether it is the right option for us?

42

F

IRSTLY, I am sorry to hear that you and your husband have separated and are seeking a divorce. It is always tough to make the decision to separate from a partner, regardless of the situation. As it stands to get a divorce in England and Wales you have to go through the Matrimonial Act 1973. The law, by definition, means that anyone seeking a divorce must either prove their partner is at fault through adultery, desertion or Vanilla June/July 2019

REAL LIVES unreasonable behaviour, or if both sides agree, they can part after two years of separation. In the absence of consent or evidence of fault, applicants must wait until they have been living apart for five years.

O

N THE 9th April 2019 the Government announced new legislation to overhaul divorce law in England and Wales. This means that divorcing couples will be able to have a ‘fault free divorce’ and will no longer need to blame each other for the breakdown of their marriage.

Under the new law, couples would have the option to submit a joint application for divorce and will not have to separate for more than two years before being able to divorce. Changes to the existing laws look to end the ‘blame game’ and establish a minimum six-month timeframe to enable couples to ‘reflect’ on their decision, alongside abolishing the ability to contest a divorce. Under the new law, couples would have the option to submit a joint application for divorce and will not have to separate for more than two years before being able to divorce. The new legislation would retain the irretrievable June/July 2019 Vanilla

breakdown of a marriage as the sole ground for divorce and the current two-stage legal process which includes the decree nisi and decree absolute would remain. This new option would therefore still require a statement of irretrievable breakdown.

T

HE CHANGES to the law will spare couples like yourself some emotional stress by allowing you to divorce more amicably without having to find blame against the other party. Divorcing amicably without blame will also have a less damaging impact on any children and allow parents to co-parent with dignity going forward.

The new legislation is expected to be introduced as soon as parliamentary time allows. This means that if you are hoping to divorce from your partner sooner rather than later, then you would have to do so through the current law. Unfortunately with no further news of when the law is likely to be introduced, it can be a waiting game for a couple like yourselves. If you would like to start the divorce proceedings before the new legislation is introduced, I would suggest booking an appointment with one of our family lawyers to talk through the process and the options available to you. ■

We are here to help... For more information regarding separating from your partner, please contact our Family Law Team on family@steeleslaw.co.uk or 01603 598000. Our specialist Emma Alfieri is on hand to help.

HERE COME THE GIRLS!

Inspiring Females takes over Chelsea Football Club... by Kirsty von Malaisé, Headmistress of Norwich High School for Girls

I

n 2016, the Inspiring Females programme was created at Norwich High School for Girls by a small team of staff and a group of young women. It launched with a professional conference event for girls aged 13-15 with the vision of inspiring, educating and empowering the young women in attendance. Since this initial event, momentum has grown significantly. Previous summits (our biggest annual events), have tackled themes such as ‘Dream it! Dare it! Do it!’, ‘Building Confidence’, ‘Taking Risks’ and ‘Compassion’. There have also been several bespoke events created by demand, such as a take-over of Aviva, focussed STEM, Arts, enterprise and wellbeing days, and two events for mums and daughters. Central to the programme’s success has been our partnership with Norfolk state schools, who have not only been invited to attend several events, but have actively shaped the programme. Since its creation, the programme has gathered support from speakers, charities and organisations across the UK – and now we want to take this programme one step further, to change the game and start a movement in girls’ education. On Friday 21st June 2019, we are shaping our most ambitious event yet. Over 650 girls aged 10-15 from around the country will gather at Chelsea Football Club for our next Summit, aptly entitled ‘Game Changers’. With 40 amazing guests in attendance, we have had the pleasure of discovering game-changers (and game-changers in training), to join us and help those in attendance understand and develop the mindsets and skills to set themselves challenges and develop their confidence. To continue the conversation at the end

June/July 2019 Vanilla

of the day, the event will close with a bespoke event for fathers to join their daughters, covering issues discussed throughout. If there were a tagline to the IF programme it would definitely be ‘I wish I had had something like this when I was at school!’, as this is what we repeatedly hear from our guests and educators in attendance. Young girls need mentors who pay scant regard to stereotypes, and who manifest leadership, authenticity and self-efficacy. Programmes such as Inspiring Females are so important for young people, to empower them to become game changers in their own right. The IF programme, created with limited resources by one school with enterprising young women and staff with many other significant day-to-day remits, has now been accessed by well over 2,000 individual girls with nearly 400 guests. The power to create real change lies within our schools. It also lies within the young people themselves, and we all really need to take the time to listen to and support them. l Find out more about Inspiring Females at www.inspiringfemales.org.uk, and Norwich High School for Girls at www.norwichhigh.gdst.net

A warm welcome to Moving In

© SYLVAINE POITAU

V

ANILLA would like to welcome Moving In, an award-winning independent family business specialising in residential lettings and property management throughout Norfolk. Based in Poringland, Moving In is run by husband and wife team Gary and Nikki Jones, who between them have over 40 years’ experience in the property market and are supported by a fully qualified team. “We pride ourselves on offering a highly professional and friendly service to landlords, tenants and professionals relocating and looking for a new home,” says Nikki. “We take our clients’ needs seriously, because we know there is so much choice out there.” So what makes Moving In a cut above the rest? “We believe what makes us so special is our superb service. Norfolk is such a wonderful place to live and we are seeing more and more people wanting to relocate here for the wonderful quality of life, countryside, nearby coast and great cities like Norwich. The

June/July 2019 Vanilla

knowledge we have of the area and our numerous contacts means we can work with clients to find exactly the home they want, at the right price, and ensure the move is as seamless as possible.

M

OVING home is one of the most stressful things you can do, so clients need to know they are in good hands. We are also a SAFE Agent, meaning that in an unregulated industry we subscribe to a strict code of conduct and working practices. This gives clients real peace of mind. “We have a proven track record, having won two gold awards at The ESTAS, the most prestigious estate and letting agent awards in the UK, voted for by our own Landlords and Tenants.” “There are more professionals than ever before relocating to Norfolk, because it leads the way in so many areas, such as the sciences and creative industries. This is where we excel, finding homes for people to rent, and of course working closely with

Nikki and Gary Jones and Emily Giles: the Moving In team

landlords across the county. “There have been some important recent changes in the industry. From the 1st June landlords and their agents are no longer able to charge fees to tenants such as tenancy renewals, reference or credit checks. These costs now need to be met by the landlord – so it will inevitably lead to an increase in rents, and our own fees too. We want to work with both landlords and tenants to ensure a fair compromise is reached. Moving In is confident that any increases made will still make us highly competitive with other property companies. “If you want to talk about letting your property, or you are looking to move, just pop in for a cuppa and an informal chat – we’d love to meet you. l For more details visit www.movinginnorfolk.co.uk

BEAUTY

All-round comfort, care and confidence

N

ORWICH dentist Ross Campbell is best known for his dedication to patient care, and offering treatment using the most innovative modern techniques. His aim is to ensure patients are happy, comfortable and confident when they leave his surgery. Five years ago Ross invested in a Biolase WaterLase – which uses laser energy and water spray – enabling him to offer his patients an even higher level of care. This groundbreaking system not only delivers a gentle, accurate and much less traumatic dental experience than traditional

50

methods, but it means Ross can also carry out cosmetic procedures. “The advantage of this technology is that it can be used for more than just dental procedures. I also carry out cosmetic treatments with the WaterLase, such as the removal of skin tags, blemishes or lumps on the face, and it is all very quick and painless.” Thanks to even more advances in laser technology, Ross can now carry out facial rejuvenation procedures with the system. “We can reduce wrinkles, scar tissue and pigmentation. It’s much

less invasive than Botox or fillers, completely drug-free and virtually painless, and in most cases excellent results can be achieved in a single session. “The aim is not to make dramatic and unnatural changes to the face, but subtle changes which can greatly improve a person’s confidence.” Ross’ qualifications are impeccable, but he is continually striving to improve and further his professional skills. “I have just graduated with a Masters Degree in Laser Dentistry, which I studied for in Genoa, Italy, over the past two years. It means I have the

Vanilla June/July 2019

BEAUTY most advanced knowledge of laser technology, and know how to use it safely. I have the skills to offer my patients a host of benefits that will enhance their looks and boost their confidence.” Ross has many patients who have taken advantage of his skills to have cosmetic treatments with the WaterLase. Edith Cram says: “During a routine dental appointment Ross explained how versatile his WaterLase is and that it could remove skin tags, as well as being used for dental treatment. He offered to remove a small lump on my tongue, and I asked if he could remove a long-term mole on my chin at the same time.

“It’s much less invasive than Botox or fillers, completely drug-free and virtually painless” “I found the procedure very simple, quick and painless, and there was no cutting involved. The wounds healed so quickly that in a few days there was no sign of where they had been, and there is no scarring. I would recommend this treatment to anyone.” Nicky Barnes says: “Ross told me about his latest technological development which could remove skin tags. Half joking, I pointed to a tag on my neck and suggested he have a look at it there and then. He took me at my word and in no time at all he had removed the tag. It was painless and swift. Now, a couple of months on, I can’t even remember where the skin tag was.” June/July 2019 Vanilla

State-ofthe-art: the Waterlase, which uses laser energy and water spray

For several years Kate Battrick had been self conscious about two fleshy lumps on her forehead and nose. “I hated them, and while most people said they didn’t notice them, I knew they were there. I wanted to get them removed, but most of the treatments I looked into seemed very invasive. I talked to Ross and he assured me he could remove the lumps quickly and painlessly with a laser, and he was right. The procedure was very quick, no more than 15-20 minutes, and all I felt was a slight tingling sensation, not unpleasant at all. Just 5 days later it was completely healed and there was no evidence

of surgery. “I am thrilled with Ross and his laser treatment – this is a totally pain free, easy way to have irritating skin blemishes removed. I recommended it to a good friend and she is equally delighted with the results!”

Norwich Aesthetics Clinic: It’s OK to feel great about yourself !

W

ITH THE popularity of aesthetic treatments continuing to soar, more and more practitioners are entering the industry. But the concern is that legally, anyone can inject anyone else… meaning any beautician or even a plumber can obtain dermal filler and inject a patient, with no training. Thankfully, consumers these days are pretty savvy, and here at Vanilla we always recommend you should seek out the highest qualified healthcare professionals to ensure the most impressive and safest results. One of our ‘go-to’ experts in Norwich would be Dr Ryan Taylor at Norwich Aesthetics Clinic – a surgically-trained NHS doctor who also has his own aesthetics practice in the city. When he’s not working long shifts at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, you can find him

54

every other Monday at Pampers Beauty Centre. Providing bespoke aesthetic treatments tailored to the individual, Ryan is gaining a reputation amongst his clients and peers as a highly approachable and caring expert in his field who will put you at ease. He offers a uniquely personal service in a relaxed, friendly and unhurried environment and ensures that every client has direct contact with him at all times. So what was Ryan’s driving force for moving into aesthetics from general medicine? “I’ve always been fascinated by aesthetics. The joy, improved self-esteem and self-confidence that a treatment can bring to a client is hugely satisfying and rewarding and drives my passion to provide treatments of the highest standard. “Since settling back in Norwich

with my young family, I’ve at last had the opportunity to open my own practice with a view to spending more of my time there in the future.”

D

R RYAN understands the importance of taking time to get to know his clients and to discuss their expectations – working together to create a treatment plan to achieve their aesthetic goals begins with a free no-obligation consultation. Specialising in wrinkle-relaxing injections and dermal filler treatments, he combines his fine aesthetic eye and advanced technical skills to create a fresh natural rejuvenated look for his clients with little downtime. Ryan’s philosophy is “less is more” when it comes to aesthetic treatments and he is passionate about creating a natural enhancement that is in

harmony with the whole face. Indeed many of his clients do not tell their partners or friends that they have had any treatment at all! It transpires that this young doctor’s number one client is his mum! “Through mum, and her friends, I have gained an even better insight into exactly what women want to achieve with their aesthetic treatments,” says Ryan. “Many of my clients come to see me at a time in their lives when they are needing a boost of self-confidence. For my more mature clients, the most popular treatments areas are frown lines BEFORE

and crow’s feet using Botox. For the younger clientele, lip and cheek enhancements are their top priorities.” Ryan also offers hand rejuvenation treatments and botox for excessive underarm sweating... just time for summer! Pampers Beauty Centre in London Street has provided the perfect, central location for Dr Ryan’s Norwich Aesthetics Clinic. Hands on healing

Joelle Fordham at her practice, BodyFlow Osteopathy in Norwich

O

steopathy is a form of hands-on treatment suitable for people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. The profession is quickly growing in popularity due to very high satisfaction rates amongst clients and excellent safety records. It all started back in 1874, when a physician and surgeon called AT Still became disillusioned with the medicine of the time and started searching for a better way. He noticed that certain diseases and symptoms had patterns

of movement restrictions associated with them, and his early experiments showed that by treating the physical body and restoring movement, symptoms and diseases also improved. This is how osteopathy was born, out of the belief that removing mechanical obstacles would allow the body’s self healing ability to take over. Osteopaths have always been at the forefront of ‘whole person health care’, following a guiding principle that achieving great things starts with getting the small things right. We have an

integrated understanding of how all the systems of our body work together, and it’s this detailed understanding of how all parts inter-relate that makes us who we are as a profession. Nothing is about the techniques we use, it’s all about the way that we think.

N

owadays, in the UK, osteopathy is regulated and recognised as an Allied Health Profession. Osteopaths thrive in this large spectrum between optimal health and disease. In other

Most osteopaths come to the profession through personal struggles with injury or other health issues, so we understand the frustrations people experience when they are told that there’s nothing wrong with them, but they instinctively know otherwise. As a professional, nothing gives me more satisfaction than being part of someone’s journey to self-improvement. Success looks different for everyone: it may be running a marathon after years of injuries, or for someone else it could be going for a short walk having been bed-bound for years. For others it’s the ability to stay in work and provide for his or her family, or enjoy a round of golf pain-free. There’s simply no better feeling than seeing the smile on the face of someone who is no longer in pain after years of thinking it was impossible! Ultimately, osteopathy is all about improving quality of life and making each of us a better person during this journey we call life. ■ Within 24/7 Fitness, Wherry Road, Riverside, Norwich (Opposite Train Station) t: 01603 327223 e: reception@bodyflowosteo.com www.bodyflowosteopathy.com

Talking about Misalignment BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY Misalignment is a term we use to describe a posture that is not completely symmetrical. You may notice that one hip is higher, that you walk on one trouser leg but not the other, that your bra strap keeps falling to one side, that your head is tilted in photographs, etc. People often describe it as feeling “wonky” or “out of line” but without being able to describe the specifics. Misalignment can set the scene for various aches and pains to manifest anywhere in the body: from foot pain to headaches and anything in between. Symptoms often move from site to site and can vary from day to day. Being misaligned means that the muscles and joints are not in an optimal position to function effectively, which requires more energy. This is typically described as a sensation of feeling stiff, weak and tired.

but what they are really experiencing is the effects of unbalanced biomechanics and asymmetrical movements. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment. Don’t wait to be in pain before seeking help: contact us today!

In my experience, most people wait for a long time before seeing an osteopath. Symptoms are put down to getting old or being unfit,

NEW NORWICH CBD CLASSES STARTING SOON!

ROSEN METHOD By Louisa Turner Rosen Method uses attuned touch and carefully timed words to listen deeply into the body. Small changes in muscular tensions and the breath are sensed and fedback to the client to foster a deepening in relaxation and awareness of their unfolding inner process. This work is like a dance between practitioner and client, gently listening and responding to each tiny change, not pushing or manipulating the body, simply being present without judgment and welcoming whatever the body is ready to show. So often we habitually ride over our feelings, having been taught early on that aspects of ourselves were not acceptable, and learning the ‘correct’ way to be, in order to receive love. Rosen Method helps us to notice and to feel in the body where limiting patterns of response are still operating. It helps us to contact and improve nervous system regulation. Rosen Method can help with many common conditions, such as back pain and arthritis, when muscular tension is part of the presentation. It also allows us to reconnect with and experience our true nature, before the necessary adaptive patterns of muscular constriction came into being. Louisa Turner is a Certified and fully insured Rosen Method Practitioner and Workshop Teacher, experienced in working with the effects of trauma. She is also a practising Chartered Physiotherapist with over 25 years experience working with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIOR DESIGN

QUESTION: I’ve just moved into a house decorated in 1980-1990s style, wall to wall terracotta and colourful glazed tiles, I think the Mediterranean look was the thing! We are keen to redecorate, and greys and neutrals spring to mind. How can I avoid falling into the same trap as our predecessors as I want the style to be long-lasting?

If there’s a particular colour you really want to use bring it in using easy-tochange items such as cushions and throws

ANSWER: It’s so hard to create a scheme that

won’t date at some point especially if you an ardent follower of trends and fashions. But there are a few things you can do to try and avoid giving the whole house a date stamp. It’s important to remember that your tastes will change over time anyway so it’s going to be easier in the long run if you keep the background as neutral as possible and emphasise your home’s natural architectural details if it has them. Then you can add some vintage or antique pieces to give a more timeless feel. Don’t invest money into big items like a sofa or window treatments with on-trend fabrics if you are not prepared to replace them in 5 years. Trends are anything but timeless and they pretty much have built-in expiry dates. That said, you can still be fashionable in small doses. For instance, if there’s a particular colour you really want to use bring it in using easy-to-change items such as cushions and throws and bedlinens.

Don’t invest money into big items with ontrend fabrics stay neutral

The goal in designing and decorating your home should always be to create a space that makes you feel happy and reflects you and your lifestyle. That means that your home should be filled with things you love – regardless of whether they are trendy. l For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

A recipe for the future

B

AKING has never been so popular, and our passion for being creative in the kitchen is a wonderful step back in time to when everyone made their own cakes and bread. It’s not just fun for everyone, including the kids, but homemade everything tastes so much better! Liz Clancy, owner of The Kitchenary Cookshop in Taverham, knows only too well the power and the passion of baking. She has been running the shop for 28 years and the impressive range of bakeware, mixing bowls, saucepans, whisks, dishes, cake tins, thermometers, crockery and glassware makes it a paradise for both the professional and amateur cook. The Kitchenary Cookshop is part of the Taverham Craft & Country Shopping Centre, which has 12 exclusive outlets including a garden centre, shops selling shoes, clothing, furniture and gifts, a cafe and much more. “Being part of this shopping

70

complex is a huge advantage for us, because it really makes this a destination for all the family,” says Liz. “Mum can come to The Kitchenary to buy things for the kitchen, dad can go to the garden centre, and they can all have lunch in the cafe afterwards. It’s a very convenient way to shop, especially at the weekend when everyone wants a fun day out, there’s plenty for the kids to do and the free parking is a huge advantage. With the NDR now open it’s really easy to get here as well.”

L

IZ has seen a few changes in the past 28 years, not only the explosion in the popularity of home baking, but the global issue of the waste we all produce – particularly plastic – and she is keen to do as much as possible to help her customers to be more sustainable. “We are doing a lot on the eco side and selling more products that are reusable and recyclable. For example we now only sell

paper straws, and we stock Bees Wax Wrap, which can be used again and again instead of paper. We also sell bamboo cups and cutlery, which are reusable, baking parchment that can be recycled, and foil made from old aircraft. These things cost a little more, of course, but the overall benefit to the planet cannot be underestimated, and they are proving very popular with our customers. “Self sufficiency is right on trend and more and more of our customers want to make their own jam, beer and wine, not only because it’s fun, but because they want to be self sufficient and sustainable. We totally support this and The Kitchenary has everything they need to make it happen.” l The Kitchenary Cookshop,

THE GARDEN MAKER

Meet Michael Read of Perfect Plantings

W

E BRITS love our gardens, and as the weather warms up we are out there planting, weeding and creating a space we can call our own. But gardens have become more than just a showcase for flowers, they are now a sophisticated extension and reflection of our living space. This means we can get more from our gardens, by creating a designed theme that links our interior and exterior, effectively bringing the outside in…and vice versa. No-one understands this better than Mike Read, of Perfect Plantings, a landscape garden company in Norwich. For over 20 years, Mike has been designing and creating gardens of every style and type – from traditional to contemporary. “Gardens are very personal, and it’s our job to turn our customers’ dreams into reality,” says Mike. “Over the years the trends of garden living have become much more design-led. People want to spend more time living and entertaining outdoors in a natural environment, so they want their garden and house to share a theme. They are no longer completely separate spaces.”

74

S

O HOW does Mike help his customers to achieve this cohesive, alfresco living style? “We often use a colour, or style of flooring in a garden to complement the flooring in the home. For example if there is a wood laminate floor in the main room leading out to the garden, we will use a wooden decking outside to continue the theme. Lighting has also become very popular, enabling people to show off their green space at night, in the winter, or for entertaining. “These days a lot of people want low maintenance gardens, and there is huge demand for artificial lawns, because it looks just like real grass, but requires very little care. Our younger customers prefer architectural, exotic plants with large fronds, such as ornamental grasses, palms and bamboo. Again, these are very easy to care for and you can achieve some fantastic colour combinations with different foliage without using flowers. For those who do like some blooms, larger

blocks of flowering perennials create a splash of colour without the work. “There is such a great choice of materials on the market for creating striking gardens with a difference,” adds Mike. “Squarecut Indian polished sandstone and slate is very in for the ultimate contemporary look along with hardwood or composite decking which now comes in a variety of colours and is superb quality and non slip.” So there really is no excuse for a lack-lustre garden. By creating a haven that reflects your lifestyle and increases your living space, your garden can be part of your home all year round, whatever the weather! Adnams First Rate gin, Martini Rosso and Campari, or try the fabulously glamourous Vodka Martini with Adnams Longshore vodka, dry vermouth, served dirty or clean, shaken or stirred. Of course, there’s a gin menu – the Rising Sun gin, (served here with Fevertree elderflower tonic, ginger and lime) is made using rye grown by Jonathan Adnams at his farm a mile away, with the addition of Japanese matcha tea, lemongrass and a special blend of botanicals. The starters are inventive and delicious. Scorched mackerel was divine, on top of a pile of mackerel tartare with kimchi and soy gel. The cured loin of beef was served with pickled prune, mizuna, lemon olive oil and parmesan.

OUTHWOLD is the star of the Suffolk seaside, and The Swan its landmark hotel, with a beautiful building dating back to the 1600s. The Adnams family bought The Swan back in 1872, opening their eponymous and now worldfamous brewery at the same time. With such a prestigious

past, Adnams are renowned for their future-thinking ethical and ecologically considerate approach to everything they do. And there’s no time like the present to visit The Swan as the newly-refurbished Still Room, a beautifully inviting brasserie epitomises this Adnams spirit of a strong heritage, with copper light fittings, a vintage inspired mirrored bar, the warm glow of amber, dark green walls and lavish gilt framed portraits, as a backdrop to a very modern menu and an array of inventive Adnams tipples. Aperitifs include French 75 – Adnams Copper House Gin with Adnams champagne and lemon juice, a Negroni with

Jerusalem artichoke soup is accompanied by a smoked egg yolk, pear and truffle. Ceviche of skrei cod comes with pomelo dressing and an avocado sorbet. There’s confit of duck leg pastilla with duck liver parfait, rhubarb and tarragon. The butternut squash parfait is served with sherry vinegar, pickled mushroom, pine nut and a dry hop lager crisp.

M

AIN COURSES are similarly clever cooking, expertly executed with great attention to detail and flavour. This is no ordinary steak and fries – chargrilled aged ribeye of beef is served with bone marrow, watercress, melted onion, triple cooked chips and a

whipped Bearnaise sauce. Roast Suffolk chicken breast has a parsley crumb, cannellini beans, charred leek, confit tomatoes and wild garlic. Torched Wester Ross salmon is with pak choi, mushrooms, spring onions, tamarigel, kombu dashi broth. Pan fried fillet of seabass is with charred and pickled purple sprouting broccoli, smoked almond, buttermilk and apple dill oil. The desserts are startingly beautiful too. Ginger panacotta with rhubarb, pistachio and buttermilk sorbet was so light yet lavish. Orange tart was piquant and sweet with burnt orange, caramel and a rye whiskey ice cream. Warm apple and date tart is served with sour apple gel and Adnams

Broadside ice cream. White chocolate mousse with almond dacquoise and limoncello espuma. The Adnams experience at The Swan is a joy. The dining room glamour makes eating here a very special occasion, at affordable prices. The relaxed and stylish setting and the thoughtful attention to detail in the menu, presentation and service make for a very memorable meal and adds yet extra sparkle to Southwold’s (and Adnams) Suffolk star status. Highly recommended. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

Seal the edges with your fingers. 3 Turn the pastry so the sealed end is on your right, then roll it out in a length 1 cm thick, dust the work surface regularly with flour, it should be 4 times long as it is broad and form a neat, precise rectangle. Fold as above. This is your first turn, leave to rest for 30 minutes in the fridge. Repeat the rolling and

folding process 2 more times. Chill for 1 hour before using. 4 Preheat the oven to 200°c. Roll the puff pastry into a rectangle 1 cm thick, prick all over with a fork and dust generously with icing sugar, place on a tray lined with greaseproof paper and then place another piece of greaseproof on top of the puff pastry and then another tray on top of that. 5 Bake for 15 minutes and then take the tray and greaseproof off the top and bake for another 5 – 10 minutes until golden. 6 Allow to cool and then cut into 12 equal rectangles.

SPARKLING WINE 2015 £21.60

Here in Norfolk we are lucky as we are fortunate to have a thriving wine industry. South Pickenham is a huge estate near Swaffham and they have just over 6 acres with vines. They make white and sparkling wines and organise vineyard tours and tastings. The white wines are light and fresh, very balanced acidity and soft citrus flavours. The 2014 is still drinking well and for a hot summers evening is perfect with light meats or quiche. Do not serve it too chilled as it will ruin the overall balance of the wine (in the UK, when it gets hot, we chill our wines to the extreme). The wine has a fairly short finish, which encourages you to drink more, and why not at £10.95 a bottle from Tastebuds Wines? South Pickenham also makes a sparkling wine – refreshing, so perfect for celebrations but also for just drinking. The 2012 vintage is still excellent but the new 2015 is something different. In 2012 they planted some Chardonnay vines and those grapes are now part of the 2015 vintage. This additional grape gives the wine more finesse and a softer finish. A hint of brioche and butter makes this wine so drinkable. Drink from hand-washed clean flutes, and see the bubbles rush to the top to give a perfect mousse. Cheaper than Champagne, but with the same visual effect, and a perfect taste. £21.60 from Tastebuds Wines.

All wines are available from Tastebuds Wines Limited. Call 01603 713925 for an appointment to visit our warehouse or order online at tastebudswines.co.uk

UMMER’S HERE and the time is right… for eating ice cream! And there’s no better choice than our own Norwich-based Lakenham Creamery, makers of the most mouthwatering traditional ice cream. Their gourmet Norfolk County range comes in 30 gorgeous flavours such as Almond Toffee Crunch, Stem Ginger and Mascarpone & Fig, and they also make the famous Aldous Traditional Ice Cream – using fresh milk straight from local farms – for nearly 100 years. With ice cream more popular than ever before, Lakenham Creamery has the ‘wow’ factor that people want... in cone loads! Owner Chris Coughlan and his team are constantly developing new flavours, engaging with the public by running competitions and winning prestigious awards along the way. “We have run several very successful competitions where we ask the public to suggest new flavours. In 2016 the winner was

84

Gooseberry & Elderflower, and in 2018 the new winning flavour was Rhubarb & Custard, which was submitted by Gary from Cambridge. “We’ve been working hard to develop this flavour and we’re delighted that it’s available now at local stockists. It encapsulates all that is brilliant about local food!” COMPETITION TIME

This summer, Lakenham Creamery are holding a different competition, called ‘Win Some Amazing Ice Cream Summer Competition 2019’. Chris says: “We’re asking people to submit a photo to #LoveNorfolkCounty showing either them or their family eating from one of our Norfolk County tubs. They need to show the flavour or, if they are eating from a cone, tell us where they bought the ice cream, e.g. John’s Rock Shop at Quayside in Wells, or Stall 8 on Norwich Market.

“We want people to wax lyrical about our amazing Norfolk County Fresh Cream Ice Creams – we are winners of 32 Gold Great Taste Awards after all! We will pick a winning photograph for each month until September, and winners will each receive 6 of our Gourmet Norfolk County 500ml Luxury Tubs. This is an Instagram based competition, so entrants need to follow our Instagram (@lakenham_ creamery) so they can enter.” The shelves at Lakenham Creamery are stuffed with awards – those 32 Gold Great Taste Awards are proof of their pedigree. “We picked up another one in 2018 for our French Vanilla favour. We know we are the best, but this proves we really are the connoisseurs choice.” ● To enter the competition go to lakenhamcreamery.co.uk

Rebecca Bone Norfolk Yarn

My City Life they realise this they are hooked. Very satisfying for everyone, including me.

Rebecca Bone is the owner of Norfolk Yarn, a familyrun shop in Norwich selling a unique collection of hand knitting yarns, spinning equipment, wool, fabrics and threads. The shop also runs knitting, crocheting and spinning courses. Rebecca has been running the business for 15 years and is supported by husband Paul, mother Christine and daughter Caitlin.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I garden, work on our house renovation project, I love walking, and of course I’m being creative at home, too – knitting, making things and also hand dyeing, which is a skill I have developed and which I hope to offer soon as a teaching class.

How did you get into the world of crafting?

What makes Norfolk Yarn so special? We pride ourselves on stocking yarns that you can’t find anywhere else. I always prefer natural fibres, so our range is wool, cotton, linen, silk and alpaca, with a few blends. Quality is key for me, I revel in working with the most beautiful materials, such as

What do you love about Norwich? Kaffe Fassett's gorgeous cotton fabrics, and this is what we offer customers. But it’s not always the most expensive, we have something to suit every pocket. I think the experience and knowledge I offer is also unusual. I can both advise and inspire people, help them to use yarns and material in the right way to achieve the best results.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job? Definitely teaching people new things. Most Saturdays we run classes here, either taught by me or others – we are lucky to have the wonderful crochet designer Sue Maton at the moment. Everyone is capable of making something, and once

The city centre is very special with The Lanes and all the quirky boutiques. There is so much going on and it’s the independent shops that make it a unique place with such a wonderful personality. The market, the theatres, cinemas, everything is great. We are spoiled for choice.

What are your hidden gems in the city? Imelda’s shoe shop on Lower Goat Lane, Strangers Coffee House does the best coffee and cake, and Angels Crystals in the Guildhall makes beautiful stuff. I am always there! ■ Norfolk Yarn, 11 Pottergate, Norwich NR2 1DS t: 01603 927034 www.norfolkyarn.co.uk

I learned to knit, sew and crochet from an early age, so being creative is second nature to me. My mother had a smallholding where she kept Shetland sheep and Angora rabbits, and I learned to spin these wonderful materials as well. We are very lucky that in Norfolk there is a very active spinners and weavers scene, so these amazing skills are still very much alive.
