SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS Suffolk is gearing up for a wonderful summer of music so let’s hope the weather plays along too!

SATURDAY 1 JUNE

Entries are now open for a popular Dragon Boat Race which is taking place in Ipswich for the second year running. The event will see brightlycoloured dragon boats compete on the Ipswich Waterfront on Saturday 1st June 2019. The 200m race is in support of Fresh Start – new beginnings (FSNB), an Ipswich-based charity that works with children who have been sexually abused. The race provides an opportunity for people to try out rowing and have fun on the Wet Dock with friends or colleagues this summer. With only 28 boats available, team spaces for the

racing are expected to go quickly and are available on a first-come first-served basis. To enter the race, participants will need to register as a team of eleven (including a drummer) and pay a £30 registration fee per person. As the race is in aid of a good cause, the dragon boat racers will be challenged to raise £50 each for charity. Spectators will be able to enjoy the race from Ipswich Waterfront, where fun activities for children including colouring competitions and face painting will also be available at the Dragon Boat Festival. To find out more call 01473 705111 or email: patsy@fsnb.org.uk or.

SAVE OUR HEDGEHOGS

From reader Jean Leggett: “Last year I discovered a mother hedgehog nursing three tiny pink hoglets under some rolled up membrane in my garden. I contacted Suffolk Wildlife Trust (SWT), and with their advice my hedgehog family thrived. Since then I have been shocked to discover that during my own lifetime, hedgehogs have decreased in population from 30 million to an estimated one million. These garden friendly mammals desperately need our help. How? They need gaps, holes or trenches between gardens for IPSWICH MUSIC DAY

them to forage for food and water. Provide shallow dishes of water, dog or cat food (not fish varieties and never milk). Place ramps in ponds so they can climb out. Stop using slug pellets and pesticides which can be fatal for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs sleep during the day, foraging for food late evening through to early morning. If concerned, place the hedgehog in a box and call SWT for advice. If the hedgehog has babies they won’t survive long without her. Local charity, Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue help sick and injured hedgehogs. suffolkprickles.org

It’s my first appearance in front of my husband’s Ex family and I know they hate me already and would rather I wasn’t there. THE POWER OF THE SUIT

THE CHECK SUIT

Miss Selfridge

Set yourself apart with various check patterns perfect for work to evening wear

by Pam Davis

W

e know all the benefits of wearing a finely tailored suit – it makes you feel refined and ‘put together’. Suits are no longer considered to be just male attire, they are definitely now, as with so many other items, Unisex clothing. I’m willing to bet the last time you even thought about the suit that’s stuffed at the back of your wardrobe, it was for a job interview, and then you threw it right back into its hiding place. Suits are precious investment pieces in any wardrobe, you don't have to worry about your look, as this outfit can be worn from work to special parties. It’s an easy-to-style apparel, with an incredibly strong appearance. The great thing about

the suit is the easiness of styling – you can buy a plain coloured design and simply accessorise. DRESS IT DOWN SUIT A suit is the epitome of Pair a matching blazer and stylish – and it makes pant with a simple white tee, getting dressed a and throw on some Vans or doddle! white sneakers. If your job (or A double breasted the occasion) allows it, swap jacket is the perfect way out the pants all together for to add a commanding tailored shorts. and powerful element to your work ensemble. You can soften the look of this masculine Star by Julien fashion piece by opting Macdonald for a fun print or you can add more feminine accessories into the mix. Personally, I love suits with high-waisted pants and side pockets. I love having fun with different colours and styles. Depending on our body shape, we can choose from boyfriend inspired sizes, loose-fit pants, as well as fitted, edgy and slim ones.

TRUE RETAIL THERAPISTS! The Stock Shop – selling for 30 years in NHS hospitals

March/April 2019 Vanilla

© SYLVAINE POITAU

T

HIS YEAR STOCK SHOP is celebrating its 30th anniversary and they want Vanilla readers to help them mark this important milestone. Stock Shop MD Mark Mitzman says: “We are very excited to have been trading for 30 years and this year we are planning to open more new stores, in Poole and at least two elsewhere. “The service we offer in NHS hospitals is completely unique – retail therapy in the true sense of the word – providing a welcome relief and a slice of normality in what can often be a stressful environment. The first store we opened was at Addenbrookes, the first hospital in the UK to open an ‘airport style’ shopping mall. “We are guests in the hospitals where we trade, but we have become a valuable part of their fabric and our sales assistants are brilliant at forming relationships with customers. It’s obviously quite a sensitive environment and very different to a shop in the high street. Customers are often unwell or stressed, so we need to be mindful of this all the time. Shops are increasingly aware that they need to offer a customer experience, and we know that

The Stock Shop at Ipswich Hospital providing welcome relief

this is our big strength because we are often a pleasant surprise and a diversion for hospital visitors and patients. “We sell a lovely range of classic ladies fashion and accessories at affordable prices. We aren’t designer, but the items we stock are stylish, appealing and include knitwear, dresses, jackets, skirts, tops, trousers, scarves, handbags, gloves and gifts such as toys. The focus is on colour and quality, items that are bright with a bit of pizazz. We source a large proportion of our stock from the UK now, which is great

for everyone; it’s always better to buy local. “Last year we launched our website to enable people to buy online as well as in stores, and we hope this will help to grow the business even more. Once people have bought in a store they often go to the website to buy again, so we get a lot of repeat business from it and it helps to build the long-lasting relationships we value so highly.” The Stock Shop, Ipswich Hospital, Heath Road Ipswich IP4 5PD www.thestockshop.co.uk

REAL LIVES

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: When I was appointed Lasting Power of Attorney, I received some paperwork, including a letter from Ann-Marie Matthews at Barker Gotelee. I remember Dad being impressed with the service and gave Ann-Marie a call. Despite it being over a year ago, she remembered Dad, which was lovely. Over a coffee, I confided my concerns to Ann-Marie. As well as managing Mum’s bills, I was keen to provide her with some extra support around the home, which I’d need her money to pay for. Talking about it was upsetting, but Ann-Marie reassured me I was doing the right thing. During the meeting, I learned that Mum and Dad had put in place Lasting Power of Attorney, not only for their financial affairs, but for their health and welfare too. This meant that I’d be able to make decisions over Mum’s future medical care, which was very reassuring.

W

ITH REGARDS to the finances, the first step was to send certified copies of my Lasting Power of Attorney status to each of the third parties that Mum was involved with. This included the energy firms, insurance companies and the council. Of course, it was also necessary for me to inform the bank. AnnMarie is incredibly experienced in handling these matters and, as I have my own family and a full time job to juggle, it was

such a relief when she said she could manage it all for me. Instantly, I felt the burden lift. Ann-Marie was so helpful and understanding. I soon received the relevant documentation advising me of my Attorney status. Consequently, it’s now really easy to manage things on Mum’s behalf. Her cash is completely separate to mine, with its own bank card. I set up regular payments for things that benefit her. For example, she has a lady pop in every day with groceries, who has since become a firm friend. As part of the process, Ann-Marie also carried out a thorough benefits check. I was pleased to learn that Mum

qualified for an Attendance Allowance – a tax-free sum to benefit Mum’s welfare. As her Attorney, I was legally able to collect the allowance and spend it on a dog walker. Mum was over the moon, admitting that she was struggling to walk far.

A

CTIONING THE POWER of Attorney was a big step for us both. Yet, by starting the process early rather than waiting until it reached a crisis point, I feel well prepared for the future. Thanks to the advice from Barker Gotelee, Mum and I feel reassured that I am able to support her whenever she needs me to. ■

E ARE approaching the end of the Tax Year, and although many people understand that they have an Individual Savings Allowance (ISA) limit of £20,000 per person, many are unaware that there is a Junior ISA Allowance as well. The JISA allowance for the 2018/2019 tax year is £4,260. Putting money aside for children or grandchildren is something many people wish to do, perhaps saving to meet some of the costs of higher education and limiting the level of debt their children start their working lives with. You may want to put money aside to help provide a deposit for a first property purchase. If your children are still too young for school, it can be difficult to imagine the day that you are buying them stockpiles of pasta and other staples to send them off with. As with most financial matters a little forward planning is essential. At what age do you think they will

There is a huge variety of ways to save but regardless of the option chosen, time will be one of the most significant factors. The sooner you act the more time you will have to achieve your goals. When looking at how we save, we also have to ask ourselves what will happen if our circumstances change? Are we, and by extension our families protected should something befall us? Your priority will be the health and happiness of your children so protect yourself and your family whilst planning and saving for the future because before you know it they will be packing that

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

AS I HAVE GOT OLDER IT SEEMS AS IF MY LASHES AND BROWS HAVE BECOME SPARSE. WHAT CAN I DO? You’re right the older we get the more sparse and finer our hair becomes. This won’t have been helped by years of using mascara. A single coat of conditioner before applying mascara or brow pencil will help to strengthen, lengthen and thicken lashes and brows. The lash conditioner will also give you more of a dramatic look. Semipermanent eyebrow tattooing could be a great alternative to fill in the spare areas, as well as eyelash extensions which will add extra length and thickness to lashes. THE DOCTOR HAS SAID I HAVE ACNE ROSACEA, IT’S SORE AND LOOKS HORRIBLE. I WANT TO COVER IT UP BUT I’M NOT SURE WHAT TO USE. It’s worth either going back to see your doctor or seeing a nutritionist because there are lots of foods types that will help calm and sooth, equally there will be food types that will irritate the condition... i.e. spicy foods and alcohol may trigger flare ups. Other triggers are the environment, lifestyle, stress and cosmetics. To help with covering up acne rosacea, you are best off using all mineral make-up, as this will allow your skin to breath and won’t irritate your rosacea. I would also advise a consultation with a professional skin therapist to

38

advise you on products you should be using and also what to avoid. MY NAILS FLAKE AT THE END AND WILL NOT GROW? This is a common nail condition called onychoschisis. It is often caused by having hands that are constantly wet, frequent use and removal of nail polish or artificial nails, and continuous mild trauma to the nail plate. We suggest you book regular manicures to keep on top of the problem. Have you considered trying gelish on your nails? The polish will last you 2-3 weeks without chipping or peeling, and will in actual fact help your natural nails underneath to grow and become stronger. I WOULD LOVE TO TRY CONTOURING. WHAT WOULD I NEED AND WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SUGGEST? When contouring there are 2 different methods, using liquids or powders. If you’re contouring for the first time I would use powders as they are a lot easier to work with and really easy to blend! Applying the contour using a tapered brush (or a normal blusher brush) where shadows normally fall on the face e.g. under the cheek bones to excentuate them. It’s important to contour the whole face so use the product right into your hair line and behind the ears. I like to think of it as the number 3 drawn around the side of your face. Highlight tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupids bow, brow bone – basically anywhere you want to enhance. You can apply highlight with an oval blender brush but I tend to use my fingers as I find it easier to work with. Just remember to blend, blend, blend and you can’t go wrong. n Vanilla March/April 2019

Let’s talk...

SPRING HAIR TRENDS

Spring is the perfect time to try something new and help lift you from a beauty rut. This season is all about the up-do, from high, bouncy pony tails to chic low buns. We asked Ariana at John Olivers to share her best beauty tips for the coming season. One of my favourite ways to look polished with minimal effort is the low bun. Just brush your hair into a low ponytail and gently circle the ends, securing with grips. The key to making it modern and cool is to keep it a little undone and messy by using a texture spray. My favourite is Goldwell Kerasilk Texturizing Finishing Spray (£22). You could even dress up a bun with hair accessories. At London Fashion Week, diamante barrettes were spotted all over the catwalk. If bling isn’t your thing, you could keep it classic with a tortoiseshell hair slide. The pretty pastel trend is such a fun way to update your look, whatever your age. I love how tones such as soft peaches and faded lilacs can update lacklustre blonde without being too daring. I love using the pastel shades by Goldwell on my clients as there’s a shade to suit everyone. And the great thing about pastels is you can have fun experimenting! John Olivers have a team of Goldwell colour experts and skilled stylists on hand to help you update your look for the Spring. Book your consultation today. SPRING CLEAN YOUR MAKE-UP BAG…

1. Clean your brushes with warm water and facial cleanser to avoid a backlog of make-up, dirt and bacteria. 2. Always check the longevity of your makeup. Look on the back of products for a number followed by an ‘M’ – such as 4M which suggests it is safe to use four months from opening. 3. Check if your make-up bag is machine friendly and pop it in the wash if so. If it isn’t, take an antibacterial wipe thoroughly around the inside.

HESE DAYS, facial aesthetic procedures are very safe, and men and women of all ages are using them to restore and refresh their look. But if you are considering Botox or dermal fillers, it’s vital that the person giving the treatment is a qualified medical professional. In the unlikely event something does go wrong, an unqualified practitioner will not have the skill or knowledge to take the right course of action, but an aesthetic doctor will. Dr Rachel Tallent is an Ipswich GP and owner of cosmetic clinic Tallent Medical, specialising in antiwrinkle injections (Botox), dermal fillers, and chemical peels. “A friend of mine had a filler procedure elsewhere and they really weren’t impressed with the results,” she explains. “I knew I could offer something much more professional, so six years ago I decided to train alongside my GP work and open a clinic. “The beauty industry is not regulated, which means anyone can offer these facial procedures, so for complete safety and the best results it’s essential to go to a qualified medical practitioner, and ensure they are fully trained in the procedures they are carrying out. I regularly attend training courses to keep my skills up to date, and I am a full member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. “My ethos is making small changes over time to achieve a natural look. Helping people to look their best is about increasing confidence and well-being, not radically altering the shape of their face. People want to look refreshed and rested, not like they have had

TALLENT MEDICAL Local Ipswich GP and facial aesthetics expert, Rachel Tallent, on the importance of getting both natural-looking and safe results a lot of work done. And no-one wants a frozen, expressionless face. Subtle is always better, that is why at Tallent Medical we will always compliment your natural beauty. “I have recently moved to a new clinic on St Johns Road in Ipswich. It was important to create a clinical but calm and inviting space for clients to feel comfortable whilst having these procedures. “We offer lots of different treatments such as Botox, which is great for preventing wrinkles and softening existing lines,” Dr Tallent says. “Dermal fillers are used to add volume to help contour lines, folds and wrinkles. Other treatments to help improve the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, acne and scarring,

include a range of chemical peels and the Dermaroller.” Many people still worry about the safety of things like Botox and fillers. “At Tallent Medical we only use the safest materials on the market, and are always happy to answer any questions about our products and procedures. VanillaE PROFIL

George & Pia

Hairdressers George and Pia are based at the Antonio Giovanni Friars Street salon in Ipswich. They met through the hair industry in 1990 and have worked together ever since. Well-known for their flamboyant style and infectious personalities, they had their own successful salon business in Ipswich for many years, before moving to Marbella, Spain for what was a new life adventure. Now though we are pleased to say they are back and for the last three years they have once again been establishing themselves as respected hairdressers in our lovely town centre.

What do you love most about hairdressing that keeps you wanting more? G&P: We love interacting with people and of course changing their appearance and how they feel about themselves. The power of a good hair style is not to be underestimated or undervalued – whether it’s an instant restyle or a long term hair goal that takes time to achieve. For us, it’s just as important to tailor our work to each individual and let us help you pull that look off. It’s an extremely satisfying feeling and that’s what keeps us wanting more.

44

How has the industry changed since you first started your careers in hairdressing? G&P: Well today there are far more opportunities for people in the industry than before, you only have to look at how many salons grace the streets of Ipswich to see that. People’s expectations have gone up, and quite rightly so, because only the best is good enough. From a fashion point of view, looks come round full circle so it’s hard to come up with something totally original nowadays but it’s important to take these fashions and styles and put your own twist on them, provided that it will suit. You spent 15 years in Marbella, what was that like? G&P: Working in Marbella was amazing, and we made some great friends. People there are extremely fashion conscious and they view hairdressing as it should be viewed, which is as an art form. Age is irrelevant, if you love a look and it suits, then you have it. We will always look back on our time there with fond memories but we are glad to be back in what we call our home town once again... well as long as we have a nice warm Summer again like last year! What keeps you both motivated? G&P: We love keeping up with latest trends and we are always prepared to learn something new. Frankly, we both have a love affair with this industry along with pride and passion in our work.

Finally could you leave us with your trend report for spring/summer 2019 G&P: We would love to! This year curls need to be brushed out to give a softer and fuller look which works well on short or long hair. Partings are placed lower on more technical haircuts, such as the strong geometric shapes. Colour wise, this Spring should see ladies switching to cooler/ metallic tones of brunette with hues of pale ash. The Summer always sees a push for that true blonde, but ladies don’t be scared to keep hold of that root shadow. Make sure your blonde is toned to whatever suits you best – whether it be the shine of a warm golden glow or the raw ‘beached out’ look from a pale blonde. It all comes down to eye colour and skin tone, so if you’re not sure try holding some gold (warm) or silver (pale) card near your skin and eyes to see which suits you the best. To help you achieve everything you want from your hair and more, please feel free to take advantage of our Reader Offer exclusive to Vanilla Readers opposite!

COACH

Katrina Love introduces you to your new invisible best friend

What would she say?

T

hink about your life today. What’s good, what’s causing you concern? There will be both positive and negative stories that we tell ourselves and attached to particular events. Sometimes we tell ourselves sad stories and our inner critic gets involved causing us much unhappiness. So what can we do about this? Well let’s bring in your new (invisible) best friend... the opposite of the inner critic. What slant would they put on your negative stories – a good one I bet? What would they be saying about your life? What changes or congratulations would be given or suggested?

So you might feel unhappy about your appearance. What would your bestie say? They

would point out all your qualities. You would feel better instantly and try to find solutions to your self-imposed life rut. Feeling unfit?

They would say “Hey let’s look for fun dance classes/clubacise/try goat yoga/ go white water rafting?” Feeling run down and depressed? “Let’s get

your hair done/get a facial/ massage/ have a spa day. Go through your wardrobe and chuck out what you’re not wearing or doesn’t make you feel fabulous...” Need nurturing and feel vulnerable? Sisal is a beautiful fibre produced from the dense leaves of the Agave Sisalana plant, spiky bushes which flourish only in a sub-tropical climate. The leaves are hand-picked before being crushed to extract the pure white fibres known as sisal. Wallpaper is one of those things that fell out of the zeitgeist – hard. After pervading home decor trends in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, wallpaper became the stuff of our parents’ decor, and our grandparents’ decor. It wasn’t cool, it wasn’t contemporary, it wasn’t chic – by all definitions, it was stale. But last year, something changed. Wallpaper experienced a revival, with tropical wallpaper covering some of the most stylish interiors on Instagram and Pinterest and this return to form promises to continue well into 2019: Beautiful and bold wallpaper has officially joined the ranks of other 2019 interior trends. Thomas Crapper & Co. Most people familiar with his name know him as a celebrated figure in Victorian England, an ingenious plumber who invented the modern flush toilet. Although it’s been proven that he didn’t actually invent the loo as we know it, for over 150 years the Thomas Crapper name has become synonymous with superior quality. Today the company still engineer authentic, period bathroom pieces, which they only provide through a network of carefully selected dealers. With four Royal Warrants in total, it’s no surprise Thomas Crapper & Co. are renowned for quality – they’ve weathered the storm of British manufacturing, to keep on making exceptional, authentic Victorian and Edwardian bathroom pieces. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference. The attention to detail means they create the very finest products, what the company refer to as “The Crapper Difference”! Thomas Crapper products are developed using the highest quality materials and traditional manufacturing techniques whilst incorporating advances in technology to suit modern plumbing practices without affecting the integrity of the product. So if you are looking for a spectacular showpiece for your downstairs loo, a stunning feature bathroom or just some top quality accessories, the traditional, period TC ‘look’ will give you something special. ● For more advice on Thomas Crapper & Co products and sanitaryware please visit the Ipswich Bathroom and Tile Centre.

2019 TRENDS

The Range Cooker Two of the most celebrated range cookers are produced by AGA and their sister company Rayburn. These two iconic range cookers have warmed, baked and roasted their way into the British mindset as an icon of warmth and homeliness. Rayburn cookers are known for their ability to supply central heating and hot water in the home; the largest of the Rayburn ranges available can heat up to twenty radiators. Unlike the traditional AGA, Rayburn ranges allow you to control the temperature of the main oven and hotplate. All modern Rayburn cookers are fully programmable and fitted with thermostats. They are available to run on a variety of fuels – gas, oil, solid fuel and wood – and in sizes to suit every kitchen. The flexibility to decide when you need your Rayburn on or off, in turn means lower fuel bills, a warm home, great food and lots of hot water when you need it! Whether you have a traditional kitchen or have gone for a sleek and modern look, there’s a Rayburn appliance that will work perfectly. The addition of a palate of new neutrals will broaden further the Rayburn appeal with a choice of 17 colours overall. ● For more information visit www.rayburn-web. co.uk or www.martinmelville.com

A

s I write this, we are still waiting to see or truly understand what the implications of Brexit will be for all of us. However, we are now in one of the most popular times of the year to consider a house move. This is normally down to days turning brighter and gardens starting to flourish with colour. This year is no exception, with families still needing to move ahead of the new academic year in September or wanting to invest in a second home ahead of the summer. No matter what your requirements are the spring market continues to be a popular time to buy or sell. We also recognise that with more buyers looking online for their new homes, technology will play a bigger part in the future. At Strutt and Parker, we now offer potential buyers the latest VR (Virtual reality) technology, which

58

A Virtual Viewing is produced at the outset, creating an online ‘viewing ready’ property which is available 24/7.

amazingly allows the viewer to move from room to room, anytime of the day or night, as if you were actually there. Importantly for our clients, this also extends to the outside, showing the gardens and any potential outbuildings, which is so important to buyers in the areas we cover. With buyers generally having less time to view a property, we have found this to be an incredibly helpful marketing tool. If you are considering a sale, we would recommend getting some professional photography organised. This is a crucial part of the marketing process, whether your property is showcased online or marketed privately – having

high quality images ensures your property gets the right attention. The visual presentation of a property is integral to a successful sale – it really could be the difference between getting a buyer and not! Please contact me if you have any questions about preparing for a potential move and I will be more than happy to help. ■ Hannah Cooper Senior Associate Director Strutt & Parker, The Stables, Wherstead Park, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BJ. 01473 220444

2019 HOME IMPROVEMENTS

HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR GARAGE

C

oncrete garage floors are usually rough, dusty and cold – hardly ideal for storing your pride and joy, fairly unpleasant for a workshop environment and awful for garages used as multi-purpose spaces such as home gyms or utility rooms… Manningtree-based garage flooring specialist, Duramat, offer a range of flooring products that are specifically designed to solve the issues posed by concrete garage floors whilst also providing an extremely durable flooring surface suitable for a range of garage, workshop and other uses. Duramat’s MD, Walker Brierley, explains the thinking behind the design of the Duramat products; “When designing the Duramat range, I wanted to develop a high-quality flooring product that March/April 2019 Vanilla

needed to be extremely hardwearing while being easy to lay and care for. It also needed to provide a great looking floor like those seen in professional garages and workshops – many of which we now provide with flooring!” Duramat’s garage flooring products address the challenges presented by concrete floors by being manufactured in various thicknesses which enable them to bridge the unevenness inherent in most concrete floors – this need for thickness ruled out the use of a rolled format similar to vinyl flooring, hence the use of interlocking tiles. Each tile is made of high-quality recycled PVC, meaning that they are extremely hard-wearing and sustainable too! PVC is an excellent insulator which is also impervious to liquids – precision

manufacturing of the jigsaw interlocks which join the tiles means that they snap together tightly as a continuous flooring product which is impervious to spills from above and concrete dust from below. The innovative jigsaw design ensures that they are easy to install, and they can be cut to fit a given floor layout or finished with optional matching edge ramps. The tiles are designed to provide a slip-resistant surface for enhanced safety and all Duramat products comply with international safety standards. They are easy to clean with a damp mop and offer significantly greater comfort than rough concrete. Duramat garage floor tiles are available in a range of surface profiles, including; checker plate, disc plate, tread plate and a smoother leather-like texture – and in a range of colours too, enabling customers to create unique floor designs to suit their individual needs. For more information visit the Duramat website at www.duramat.co.uk.

Don’t break the law-n! 7 GARDEN CRIMES TO AVOID THIS SPRING

Crimes you could be committing in your backyard and how to avoid them! 1. THEFT Keeping and eating windfallen fruit, that are blow into your garden, or stocking up on leaves, twigs and branches from neighbours’ trees, could be considered theft – as they constitute someone else’s property that you intend to permanently deprive them of. It’s a good idea to seek permission before retaining items that are technically possessions of another gardener. 2. FLY TIPPING Don’t just throw twigs or trimmings straight back over the garden fence though, as this could be viewed as garden waste fly tipping! Even scooping up cat droppings which you suspect to belong to a neighbour’s pet and tossing them back to where you think they belong could be interpreted as illegal disposal of waste! 3. TRESPASS Leaning into a neighbours garden to trim overhanging trees or plants – or for any other purpose – could be interpreted as trespassing, even if there are no physical barriers to cross. Green-fingered Brits should only take their shears up to the

March/April 2019 Vanilla

boundary line of their property and agree with their neighbour if garden maintenance is required on their land.

a real risk of illegally pollutiing the air if they burn rubbish in their backyards or have a barbeque or bonfire that is too smoky.

4. BLOCKING LIGHT When put into practice, the ancient ‘right to light’ law, in effect means that if a window has received natural daylight for two decades or more, the owner of that building is entitled to forbid any obstruction to their illumination. This means that your neighbour could order you to tear down your new shed, tree or anything else in your garden if it blocks the sun reaching their windows.

6. SNOOPING If your children love to jump up and down on a trampoline in the garden then they could be subject to complaints of intruding into the neighbours’ privacy. Similar accusations could be levelled at those tempted to peek into next door’s home when climbing a ladder to clean the windows or when trimming a tree, so anyone rising above the height of backyard fences or hedges should be reminded of an individual’s right to privacy.

5. POLLUTION Popular readers who have lots of friends and family over for a garden social gathering could be guilty of noise pollution if they disturb neighbours, particularly overnight. Using noisy, mechanical garden equipment such as powered lawnmowers, chainsaws or even heating a hot tub could also leave you in legal hot water if you produce too many decibels for next door’s liking. Gardeners could also be running

7. VANDALISM Painting a fence that doesn’t belong to you could be considered minor vandalism, so it’s important to check the property deeds or land registry if you’re not sure. Attaching a washing line, garden hose or hanging basket to a neighbour’s outside wall could also potentially damage their property and may leave home owners in a spot of bother.

WELL DONE TO... THE CAKE SHOP in Woodbridge has baked its way to victory in the semi-finals of the East of England Co-op’s Producer of the Year competition. The bakery was crowned Suffolk County Winner after securing an impressive 4,114 votes. David Wright, Director at The Cake Shop, said: “We take immense pride in our work and we are extremely touched by the support we have received from the general public. “We really hope that we can go on and win it for our county, our town and for all those people who made the effort to vote.” Mr Wright has already helped amass a collection of accolades for his family business – and last year was recognised independently as Britain’s Baker of the Year. He took over the Cake Shop Bakery from his father, Peter, in 2013. Less than a year later, the shop won Britain’s Best Bakery on ITV – and was then named best family business and best independent retailer at the Suffolk Food and Drink Awards in 2015.

You can’t beat a Spring roast chicken

Sutton Hoo Spring and Summer Roast SERVES 6

1 whole free-range Sutton Hoo chicken 1 whole lemon, halved 1 bulb garlic, halved 2 sprigs Rosemary 2 sprigs lemon thyme 400g new potatoes, boiled 2-3 courgettes 250 ml white wine 175 g softened butter 150g olive oil If you’re planning an extra special Easter Sunday lunch with family and friends, look no further than Sutton Hoo Chicken's Whole Chicken for a meal to remember.

66

Succulent, delicious and juicy, Sutton Hoo Chicken's Whole Chicken is the ultimate roast dinner choice.

Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas mark 8. Smear 100g butter over the chicken and season well inside and out. Place the rosemary, half the bulb of garlic and half a lemon inside the cavity of the chicken. Place the chicken into a deep roasting tray. 2 Pour over about 100g olive oil and then add the wine into the roasting tray. Place in the oven for 10 mins then turn the heat down to 180°C. 3 Roast for 45 mins per kg, carefully remove from the oven and baste the chicken with its own juices. Return to the oven for a final 10 minutes.

4 Remove from the oven and leave in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes. Cover loosely with foil. Add the boiled new potatoes to the roasting dish. 5 Place a frying pan on a medium heat and pour in the remaining oil and butter. As the pan begins to smoke, throw in the cut courgettes, lightly season and fry for 2-3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. 6 Put the potatoes into the same pan, put it back onto heat, throw in the thyme and squeeze the juice from the half lemon and fry for a couple of minutes. 7 You are now ready to serve – carve the chicken and enjoy. ■ For more information on Sutton Hoo Chicken or more recipe ideas visit www.suttonhoochicken.co.uk

The Tuddenham Fountain The

Vanilla Reader Review

I

S THERE a friendlier pub in Christendom than the Fountain at Tuddenham St Martin? This lovely old inn on the north side of Ipswich is bursting with bonhomie and the warmest of welcomes. It’s a traditional oldfashioned village pub, opening its doors and its arms to visitors to come in to enjoy a really good spread of perfected pub classics

68

and hearty clever cooking. The Fountain’s motto is ‘Where Friends Meet and Eat’ – and the smiling staff certainly make each new arrival in the timber beamed dining rooms feel instantly at home, relaxed and amongst friends. The Fountain is an instant mood-lifter. Lush gin and tonics are as delightful as you’d expect from a deep Adnams Copper House Raspberry gin garnished with strawberries. Fresh warm bread served to the table was accompanied by tiny pats of seasoned butter. Starters are lovely – pan-fried pigeon breast with roasted carrot, parsnip crisp and carrot puree was deliciously light but flavoursome, a salmon and cod gratin with a cheddar cheese crust was

oozing with savour warmth. The starter menu also includes inventive plates like crab tagliatelle, chilli, ginger, spring onion and coriander or Goan potato and spinach samosas, mango chutney, alongside specials such as a white onion soup, and can also be served as a light main. Set menu starters include smoked trout, potato and bacon salad or crushed avocado bruschetta with poached egg, again available as light mains.

T

HERE’S A wide choice of mains, with a long dinner menu alongside a good choice of seasonal daily specials, and a really good set menu selection with two courses for just £16.50. The star special on our visit was Vanilla March/April 2019

grilled fillet of beef, with a prawn skewer, dauphinoise potatoes, bernaise sauce and seasonal vegetables, proud, substantial and perfectly executed. Other specials included baked seabass stuffed with orange and fennel, or grilled skrel cod, with a prawn, chorizo and bean stew, tapenade and vegetable medley. Menu staples, included the sumptuous richly slowly roasted belly pork, also on a thick slab of gorgeous dauphinoise potatoes, was accompanied by lushly shiny cabbage and bacon and an awesome gravy, alongside choices such as roast guinea fowl breast stuffed with apple & hazelnut, roast root vegetables and new potatoes, or chargrilled calves liver, smoked bacon, black pudding, mashed March/April 2019 Vanilla

potatoes, seasonal vegetables or sweet potato, spinach and ricotta lasagne, leaf salad. These clever dishes compete for attention alongside well worked pub classics, cod and chips (obviously Adnams-beerbattered) or big juicy steaks, high stacking burgers or a roast chicken breast, served here with red wine jus, colcannon potatoes and a vegetable medley. The desserts are as delicious. The signature dish is their baked dark chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream – as sweet as it is picture perfect. The baked vanilla cheesecake with poached rhubarb, jelly and brandy snap was a great show of immaculate chef-skills and a delightful mix of fresh flavours. Also on the list, the treacle tart with honey and

ginger ice cream sounds fantastic, or for lighter ends to the meal, try the affrogato with real vanilla ice cream and double espresso, or a Baileys tiramisu.

T

HE FOUNTAIN is for friends and food and the two combine here effortlessly. This busy bustling pub accepts group bookings without the pain of pre-ordering, warmly welcomes families and all ages as well as dogs, rightfully popular for its excellent service, affable welcome and great Suffolk food. Danielle Clarke Principal, St Joseph’s

My East Coast Life September. St Joseph’s is also very well-known for the outstanding quality of its art and music, and in particular our annual musical.

This month we meet Danielle Clarke, who for the past five years has been Principal of St Joseph’s College, a co-educational Independent School in Ipswich.

Was it a culture shock moving from Liverpool to Ipswich? In a word, yes – in a positive way! The peace and quiet took some getting used to, but I have grown to love Suffolk, especially the seaside town of Felixstowe where both my children have grown up. Suffolk’s location and easy access to other great places including London and Aldeburgh are real advantages. St Joseph’s is well known for its Rugby Festival, but that’s only one thing. What is the College really like? The College is like a home, with

a real family feel. The students never cease to amaze me, with their talent, excellent manners and joie de vivre! Our staff are completely dedicated to ensuring a broad, balanced and stimulating experience for all. We are delighted with our academic achievement and in particular our progress at A-level: we have been ranked second in Suffolk and in the top 5% nationally this year. Every day is different at St Jo’s, packed with opportunities for our students. We are renowned for our rugby, but we perform well in a range of other sports, not least in netball, girls’ cricket, table tennis and equestrian events. We now have in place a boys’ football academy, with a girls’ academy launching in

When you entered teaching did you have any idea you would become principal of an independent school? I started my career as a teacher of French and German, which I loved and had no notion of becoming a principal at that point. However, as I took on more responsibility, initially as a Head of Languages and then Assistant Headteacher, the idea of becoming a principal really grew on me. I am very lucky – not just with the position I hold, but where I hold it and the students and staff whom I work alongside daily. Do you consider yourself a true Suffolk girl now or is your heart still in the north? I think a true Suffolk girl, although whilst I will always back ITFC, I remain loyal to LFC! You must be very busy; what do you do to relax? I enjoy time with my family and friends, visiting local restaurants, the cinema, musicals in London, walks on the sea front in Felixstowe. I will read anything and everything and love a wide range of music. I am looking forward to seeing Ed Sheeran in Chantry Park in August. ■
