June 2019 sees the welcome return of the popular Suffolk Open Studios programme, now in its 8th successful year. Every weekend in June, artists across the county will be opening their studios to the public to allow visitors a unique opportunity to watch them at work and quiz them about their practice. The 2019 programme runs over all five weekends in June, commencing Saturday 1 June, with over 100 artists taking part as well as eight galleries. All studios are open 11am-5pm and entry is free. Numbers this year are significantly up on last year, marking a powerful testimony to the event’s growing popularity.

Participating artists come from every corner of the art world and will be showing work across a wide choice of media covering every aspect of the visual arts, including painting, ceramics, glassware, print-making, pottery, sculpture and more. With work ranging from the strictly traditional to the highly abstract, the organisers guarantee there is something for every art lover. Visitors can learn about participating artists, see examples of their work, check opening times and plan their route by visiting the Suffolk Open Studios website at www.suffolkopenstudios.org. An online map shows the location of all artists and galleries. 11 MAY - 2 JUNE

Cake & Catwalk Age is just a number!

I never get offended when younger customers come in and declare that their mum would love my shop! Not surprisingly, I often get the mums bringing the daughters in too... I have a very stylish daughter who often helps me do my buying and also buys all her friends gifts from my shop, although she lives in London. She still thinks my stock is unique. We often share outfits and give each other our hand me downs (not the crop tops or bikinis). But we both have similar tastes and have managed to stay within two dress sizes. When she lived at home, several items went missing from my wardrobe and I have promised not to mention the Otto Glanz belt lost at night club! Still grieving. She recently let me have one of her fabulous and expensive dresses which I have lusted over. My tip this month is not to define your shopping or yourself by your age. However young or old you are. Keep an open mind and be creative with your style. Surprise yourself. LYNN TURNER

SPRING DENIM REFRESH by Pam Davis

DAY OR NIGHT

N

o Spring wardrobe refresh would be complete without a denim update. This staple is always in fashion and usually worn on repeat. Whether it’s rebuying the highwaisted jeans you wear to smithereens every year or trying out a new trend – you can always make room for more denim in your closet. And some of the biggest styles this Spring are more practical than ever (such as coveralls) while also appealing to the eye! Jeans are the skeleton of any wardrobe – so you have to get it right – YES? We’ve all got our favourite pair that we live in and cant live without, almost like a second skin! No other piece of clothing can be worn in so many ways, and such different occasions and always look good. There

are so many to choose from, so many shapes, cuts, washes and fabrics – maybe now’s the time to switch up classic blue for animal print, or a new silhouette? My experience has found that each brand of jeans and denims will be individual to them, in turn that means you will find sizes will vary with different brands. There is no age limit to jeans, men and women with all different shapes and sizes, the key is to find a pair to suit your individual body shape. Bottom line, skinny jeans are not out of style but we are starting to see some new silhouettes and trends in jeans and pants in general. It’s truly an “anything goes” kind of year for denim more styles, silhouettes and washes out there than ever before.

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION Lindsay Furniss, owner of The Tannery in Woodbridge, tells Vanilla readers about her latest trip to Florence to visit one of the family-run workshops that produce the fantastic range of leather goods she sells.

L

AST SEPTEMBER I took some time to visit some of our suppliers in Italy, and in particular, Boldrini in Florence, one of the leather artisan workshops that makes the items we stock in The Tannery. They are a small family business, run by Roberta and Luca, but they make superb products for high profile brands all over the world. We have been working with Boldrini for eight years and I visit them at least twice a year. Ours is a wonderful close relationship, and I feel very much part of the family. As with the other factories we work with in Italy, Germany, France and Spain, their quality, skill and workmanship are superb. They use traditional techniques, so this is not mass production, it’s a creative process and they take enormous pride in what they do. Boldrini has an amazing factory and showroom and I arrive to a warm welcome from the family and breath in the heavenly scent of leather. I visit the factory to choose leather, colours and finishes for the next season and to look at their latest collection of samples for satchels, handbags, briefcases,

luggage, purses and wallets. Boldrini works with premium brands, so what they have to show me is always stunning. Working with Roberta and Luca we design our bespoke range of leather goods in the colours and finishes I think will best suit my customer base, with hand finishing and some touches I know will work well, such as longer shoulder straps. The leather is the very best, of course, and I know it has been correctly sourced. Walking around the factory and seeing the skill of the people working there is always one of the

best parts of my trip. It makes me realise that this level of quality is hard to find these days. After a hard day’s work the family and I retire to a restaurant for a meal and a glass or two of something to toast our day. There is always lots of fun and laughter – this is the way to do business, and their Italian hospitality is wonderful. It’s thrilling to see those designs I chose back in September now in The Tannery shops. Our loyal customers return again and again – they deserve the very best. ■ www.tannery.co.uk

FAIRTRADE GOLD

The most precious of metals made even more precious!

G

OLD HAS BEEN treasured and revered for thousands of years. From Tutankhamun’s mask, to the Crown Jewels, to the ring on your finger, gold remains an enduring symbol of love, power and wealth. But have you ever wondered where your gold comes from? Worldwide, around 60% of the gold used each year is newly mined. About 20% of that newly mined gold comes from artisanal and small-scale miners. Typically, these miners are individuals, groups, families or co-operatives using pickaxes and shovels to dig mines and have few other options for earning a living. A stark contrast to the large scale, heavily mechanised processes of the large corporations. Around 16 million men, women and children in Africa, Asia and Latin America work directly in gold mining supporting around 100 million people, but because of their poverty, absence of regulation and legal protections they are rarely paid a fair price for their product. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Fairtrade Gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification scheme for gold. Seeing the wonderful Fairtrade stamp on jewellery means that you know the miners have received a fair deal under internationally recognised standards – such a small symbol

May/June 2019 Vanilla

holds a powerful message. Miners not only get a fair price for their gold, they also get the ‘Fairtrade Premium.’ For every kilogram of gold they supply they receive an additional $2000 to be spent on improving their communities. Riley & Riley Jewellers in Ipswich and Aldeburgh have recently become Registered Fairtrade Goldsmiths and Accredited Ambassadors of Fairtrade Gold. The majority of their wedding rings and many of their engagement and eternity ring designs can all be made in 9ct or 18ct white, yellow or rose, Fairtrade Gold, fully traceable back to the mine. Fairtrade gold is processed separately so its route can be followed from the mine to your finger. The Fairtrade gold in Riley & Riley’s rings comes

from the Sotrami mine in Santa Filomena in central Peru. “Preparing Wills in advance of our wedding gave us one less thing to worry about as we planned our special day and our future lives together”

Writing a Will in anticipation of marriage MY PROBLEM: I was engaged to the most wonderful man, Scott. We were so excited to be making plans both for our wedding and our future life together. We’d bought a fabulous house that we had been renovating for the past 18 months. I couldn’t wait to get married, but had just one niggle in the back of my mind. I had been married before and was concerned that my ex-husband was somehow going to be entitled to a share of what Scott and I had worked so hard for. I’d previously made a Will leaving everything I had to my exhusband. Although I knew that after my divorce, this Will no longer applied, Scott and I hadn’t yet made Wills in respect of each other. It was concerning me as to what would happen to my half of our beautiful house should anything awful happen to me in the meantime. AMY, SAXMUNDHAM

32

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

I confided in a friend about how I was feeling. She said that she and her husband had their Wills drawn up in advance of being married for that very reason. They had bought a house together and wanted to be sure each other would be provided for. She said how helpful and understanding she had found Barker Gotelee to be, so I decided to get in touch. I was put through to Rebecca Dixon in the private client team and she immediately put me at ease. I was fearful of being Vanilla May/June 2019

REAL LIVES

judged, having been married before, but Rebecca was so lovely. I knew I was in very kind and capable hands. We arranged to meet, along with Scott too. I asked what I needed to bring and Rebecca sent over an email questionnaire so that we could gather together our thoughts and arrive prepared. During the meeting, Scott and I outlined our wishes and Rebecca did a fantastic job of capturing it all. She highlighted some considerations that we might want to make, including whether we would like anyone else to benefit, what would happen if we have children, who would be their guardians, would we like to make a Lasting Power of Attorney at this point? Whilst we clearly had a lot to consider, Rebecca made the whole process as quick and painless as possible.

G

IVEN WE had set a date for the wedding, we were able to prepare our Wills in anticipation of being married. Rebecca explained that this wasn’t uncommon and it was actually a very sensible thing to do. I certainly didn’t want to take the romance out of our wedding, but I knew that if I didn’t have plans in place in advance of our honeymoon, my concerns about my ex-husband would have continued to plague me. Rebecca assured me that by putting this new Will in place it would supersede any previous Wills and I could rest easy knowing that Scott would be the beneficiary should the worst

happen. Rebecca also included a provision in the Will for any future children we might have; Scott and I very much plan to have a family. I had assumed that we would need to have our Wills rewritten every time that our circumstances changed, but Rebecca drew them up keeping our long-term plans in mind and future-proofed them as much as she could. She advised that it would be a good idea to review them every three to five years to be sure that they still accurately reflect our wishes, but that it wouldn’t be necessary to have them redone if they were still what we wanted. Doing this meant that we could then wholeheartedly enjoy the run up to the wedding

and our honeymoon without any concerns lurking in the background. I am so relieved that I chose to confide in my friend and realised that what I was concerned about was easily and cost-effectively rectified. I will be forever grateful to Rebecca for making us feel special and supported whilst planning an element of our wedding that we would rather have not had to think about.

N

OW WE can look forward to the rest of our lives together, safe in the knowledge that those we care for, and the family we plan to have, are provided for, as per our wishes, in any eventuality. ■

OBODY wishes to dwell too much on their own mortality however we have likely all heard the Benjamin Franklin quote about there being two certainties in life... Death and Taxes. In the UK, Inheritance Tax (IHT) combines both, but an IHT liability does not have to be a certainty. If you understand the steps that can reasonably be taken, it may be possible to mitigate tax on your estate and thus pass more of your wealth onto your family. There are a few simple actions you can take, making full use of your annual allowances, saving into your pension or placing assets in trust are just some examples. Identifying the right approach is down to pinpointing your own needs and priorities. As with most things in life there is rarely a single perfect solution but there will be

KEVIN DOHERTY alternatives to consider. Taking the time to reflect on your options can help you to choose the right path for you and your family, so have a conversation and start to take control. Estate planning need not be a gloomy process, it can and should be empowering because knowing is always better than guessing. Do you know for certain whether a liability exists or are you worrying about nothing?

with property expert HANNAH COOPE R

A

s I sit here with thoughts of the summer months that lie ahead, there is still an air of uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Despite this, the arrival of Spring has brought more available property to the local market, with clients keen to take advantage of the better weather and their gardens being full of colour and looking their best. On the theme of colour; in more recent years interior trends have seen the popularity of many neutral and grey shades being used liberally in our homes. We are now seeing a resurgence of vibrant shades both on walls and floors, fixtures and fittings. However, it is important to remember that your taste might not necessarily be someone else’s. If you are thinking of selling, now is probably not the right time to make your previously pale grey kitchen an electric shade

36

of mustard, but if you’re staying put, go for it! Whilst freshening up your paintwork or perhaps replacing some old worn carpets is a wise move in preparing for a sale, save your bold choices for your future home. Sticking to those less dramatic changes, such as simply updating however, could help to secure a buyer in a shorter timescale. With this in mind, the temptation to replace kitchens and bathrooms at vast expense just ahead of launching a property to the open market is not guaranteed to add value to a property. It could potentially be a needless task with buyers preferring to put their own stamp on a new home. Whilst price sensitivity still remains key to securing the best possible outcome, think carefully about what inexpensive, cosmetic changes you could make to your

house in order to get it ‘market ready’. If in doubt, be sure to seek advice from your agent. Getting the guide price right from the outset is still exceptionally important. It can be tempting to choose an agent based solely on their giving the highest recommended guide price, however my quick tip is to always ask them to provide evidence of comparable properties that they have sold to support their advice. Please contact me if you have any questions about preparing for a potential move and I will be more than happy to help. ■ Hannah Cooper Senior Associate Director Strutt & Parker, The Stables, Wherstead Park, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BJ. 01473 220444

E’VE REALISED that one of the things that we love about Suffolk is that we have a whole heap of diverse little businesses popping up in the pretty villages surrounding our towns. I mean, where else can you find a fully appointed beauty salon offering all the latest treatments, with luxury treatment rooms and amazing countryside and river views? We’re talking about The Pink Shed at Brantham – an unassuming, barn-like building that gives few clues to the luxury that awaits you on entering. It’s the closest salon to Vanilla HQ and for the team it’s our local ‘go-to’ for either essential beauty maintenance or a jolly good pampering. With summer around the corner and more parts of us out on display, The Pink Shed is the ideal place to get your full body beauty MOT. Natalie Wood and her seven

therapists are on hand to provide every treatment you might need, using only the best beauty brands and techniques... WAXING: Smooth, silky hair-free limbs and bikini line are a must for Summer. The Pink Shed use the renowned Lycon wax system which picks up very, very short hairs, leaves the skin smooth and is virtually pain-free. OPI VARNISHES AND GELISH: At The Pink Shed treat yourself to a hand or foot treatment before you go away – whether it’s a simple file and polish using OPI varnish, a luxury manicure or Gelish colour that lasts up to three weeks on your nails without chipping or peeling. Chose from dozens of colours and enjoy zero maintenance – just perfect for holidays. SIENNA X SPRAY TAN:

Long since a favourite of beauty professionals, a Sienna X spray fake

tan leaves a silky smooth, streakfree covering, that literally does not smell of anything! Definitely recommended… particularly if your partner hates the normal ‘biscuity’ fake tan smell! Excess tan can be washed off as soon as an hour after, so no more ‘tanned’ sheets to worry about either. LVL LASHES: Enhance your natural lashes with an LVL treatment. LVL stands for length-volume-lift, and the idea is simple. A setting serum is used to straighten your natural lashes at the root (making them look curled up), and then your lashes are tinted, creating the appearance of mascara. Perfect for pool and beachside, as no makeup is needed. NOVALASH EXTENSIONS:

Synthetic lashes are meticulously attached to each single natural lash with the use of medical-grade adhesives. The final result is Vanilla May/June 2019

he latest addition to the growing list of businesses taking up residence at Suffolk Food Hall is Salon By The Bridge, particularly welcome news for ladies that like to lunch and be coiffed at the same time! Salon owner, Damien Nurse, decided to swap the hustle and bustle of running a big town salon for the big skies and countryside of the banks of the Orwell, and he’s loving it! Along with great friend and stylist, Caroline Powell, he has created the perfect haven that can be found on the ground floor of The Cookhouse, with views out across the river and the iconic bridge. The faithful following – his loyal clients of many

Parking is abundant (and free!) and they also have the opportunity to shop, lunch, meet up for coffee or even exercise (Penny Jones Pilates and Crossfit Orwell are also on the same site). Damien is determined to keep the relaxing and informal atmosphere of this new salon but is already scouting for another experienced and talented stylist to join the team as there’s plenty of space for more clients. YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED

...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP THE DARK CIRCLES UNDER MY EYES? Simply put, periorbital dark circles are a result of the thin layer of skin below your eyes showing the blood vessels and the blood they contain. Usually you can help improve the appearance by making sure that you get your full eight hours sleep a night and make sure that you drink two litres of water every day, as dark circles are made worse by dehydration and a build up of toxins. You might also want to try using an eye product that contains caffeine, as it can act as a ‘pick me up’ for the eye area and help to reduce puffiness. Also worth a mention are products that contain skin plumping vitamins C and K. Salon treatments which target the eye area may also help as massaging the area can help to reduce puffiness and eliminate toxins. IF I USE MAKEUP WITH SUNSCREEN IN IT, DO I STILL NEED TO APPLY SUNSCREEN SEPARATELY? That all depends on the SPF of the sunscreen in your makeup you are using. If your make up contains an SPF 15 or higher, then it should generally be ok as long as you apply it evenly. If your makeup contains an SPF lower than 15 you will need to apply

48

a sunscreen underneath your make up. It is recommended that we all use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher everyday even in the winter months to prevent the skin from UVA and UVB damage and accelerated skin ageing. It is also worth remembering that SPF is not accumulative, so if your foundation contains SPF 10 and your powder contains SPF 8 the maximum protect you are receiving is SPF 10. Also, sun exposure degrades sunscreen properties, which means that you will need to reapply every few hours. We recommend using a mineral powder, or mineral veil, as it contains a natural SPF 15 and can be easily dusted on top of your make up without making it look too heavy. WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE ACNE SCARRING? The way you treat your acne scarring will depend on your skin colouring. If you have fair skin you will usually end up with red marks and if you have a darker skin then you may find that your scarring is darker than you natural skin tone. So, for paler skin tones, go for an exfoliating treatment which contains salicylic or glycolic acid which will help to reduce the redness of your scars. If you have a darker skin tone then you might want to consider using a cream which has a lightening ingredient to help even out your skin tone. If your scarring is deep you may need to consider a treatment that will help to regenerate the dermal layer of the skin – boosting your skins rapid repair and collagen, which in turn will help reduce the deep scarring. n Vanilla May/June 2019

THE MILLION DOLLAR FACIAL

REPORla T

I

F YOU haven’t heard the term ‘Million Dollar Facial’ yet, you soon will. It’s a relatively new 10-step procedure that incorporates different techniques that are all combined into one carefully crafted treatment. WHAT’S INVOLVED?

It’s a combination of an in-depth skin analysis, dermaplaning, lymphatic massage, microneedling and a fabulous bespoke peel suited to your skin type. All rolled into one hour of feeling like a million dollars. First a scalpel takes off a layer of dead skin

50

and hair (Dermaplaning), then a hyaluronic acid mask to hydrate, followed by a lymphatic massage and then micro-needling with a dermaroller to finish off. WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

Regardless of your gender, it’s suitable for all skin types and for those who are just simply looking to pamper themselves. More and more men are becoming aware of the importance of keeping themselves looking sharp and fresh. It can also benefit individuals who are prone to: pigmentation, lines and wrinkles,

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair. Using a scalpel and a delicate touch, the technician simply abrades the surface of the skin using light feathering strokes. By removing the very top layer of skin (epidermal) products can penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. The process is completely pain-free. You might think a hyaluronic acid mask would burn a bit – what with it having acid in its title – but instead it gives a cool, soothing sensation. Micro-needling is a dermaroller procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin. It is known for its incredible ability to stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin. The procedure is quick without causing any real discomfort. IS IT A MILLION DOLLARS!?

Imagine! It’s a luxury treatment with incredible results and will cost you £125 WHERE CAN I GET IT?

At The Beauty Lab and they are offering it to Vanilla readers for a special introductory price of only £90 (normally £125)! The Beauty Lab @ Glow Clinic, 2 Gt Colman Street, Ipswich Tel: 07756 378826

TR ED TEST

N-LITE LASER TREATMENT Hope for Acne sufferers is offered by Health Counts clinic

F

OR AS LONG as I can remember, I have always had spots on my chin. Not just little whiteheads here and there, but painful under skin cysts that not only hurt but also look terrible – it has massively dented my confidence. I’ve tried every anti-acne product I could get my hands on. They all seemed to work initially, then without fail, I’d wake up one morning with a familiar pain on my chin, like a huge bruise and looking in the mirror there would be another red raised lump and my heart would sink. It was time for action.

MY FIRST TREATMENT

I work at Health Counts clinic and had heard about acne treatments using N-Lite lasers and I was eager

52

After 1st treatment: Less redness overall, with larger acne reducing

to see if it could help me. The process began with a consultation of about 45 minutes. My therapist Millie, is so knowledgeable and thorough she was able to explain the science, biology and the whole treatment process. The N-Lite pulsed dye laser kills a wide range of bacteria and viruses and the laser wavelength also stimulates a strong anti-inflammatory and healing response in the skin. So the combined effects really help to control and reduce, or even stop live acne in its tracks! Health Counts also provides a range of clinical strength products, peels and washes which, when combined with N-Lite treatment, can really help to get acneic skin back to skin you can be proud of! Millie cleansed my face and then

popped some goggles on me while she proceeded to laser me and talk me through the noises I was hearing from the machine! I wouldn't say it was a painful procedure, it was just like having a warm pin prick for a millisecond on your skin. The most painful part was the laser on an active spot but again, it goes so quickly it wasn't too uncomfortable. After ten minutes it was all over. The spots that were originally sore weren't any longer and my chin generally felt so much more comfortable. I was advised on the most appropriate skincare routine (cleansing gel wash, SPF etc) and the reasoning behind each product. I made sure I left my face alone for the rest of the day and that night I didn't use any products and just washed my face with Vanilla May/June 2019

BEAUTY

After 2nd treatment: Larger spots reduced and no new break-outs

warm water and dried with tissues. Although the spots didn't all magically disappear after a single treatment, I was definitely more comfortable, and saw some immediate difference, less redness and no new outbreaks. I was very optimistic about the next steps. MY SECOND TREATMENT

Two weeks after my first treatment, I was back in the chair. Millie began by thoroughly cleansing my face, she then applied a 40% glycolic solution and left it on for five minutes. This tingled as the glycolic percentage was higher than the gel wash I had been using, at 12%. I stopped using my home products for 24 hours before the treatment as too much glycolic can actually result in hyperpigmentation and create redness – which would kind of defeat the object of ‘Operation Clear Skin’ as I have been calling it! After this, it was extraction time. This is by far the worst part

May/June 2019 Vanilla

After 3rd treatment: Acne almost eradicated Operation Clear Skin is a success!

of the treatment but also the most necessary, and Millie is a gentle as possible, all the while being very thorough. Essentially, she needs to clear out the dirt and grime from any visible spots/outbreaks to enable the laser to be able to zap the areas that produce (and keep producing) all the spots. Once all the spot popping was done, it was time for a much more relaxing step – a Papaya exfoliation mask. This mask smells amazing and you'll just forget the last five minutes of discomfort and relax whilst the mask works its magic to deep cleanse all those pores. Once this is done and the mask removed, it’s on to the final step of the treatment, laser time. As before, Millie applies the goggles and gets you comfy and basically zaps the newly cleansed outbreaks with the laser. This time, the setting was higher but no more painful, still that same warmishneedle-type feeling but it’s so quick it’s over before you know it.

Treatments need to be repeated on average about every two weeks, but the service Health Counts provides is bespoke to each person. If you've ever been like me and had acne or any skin issue then I can highly recommend Millie at Health Counts. I am no longer in pain or having itchy, horrible breakouts and most importantly I have my confidence back, so much so I haven’t needed to wear foundation in months! What more could a girl want? L

ike many of us, I have been suffering with a few aches and pains recently so when WildGinger Health & Beauty offered me the Ultimate 90minute Relaxation Treatment I jumped, (well not that high!) at the chance to experience this amazing, relaxing treatment. WildGinger firmly believe in treating from a holistic perspective and always have your health and wellbeing at heart. Their ethos is to always make clients feel important, safe and welcomed, however simple the treatment is. Mandy certainly made me feel welcome and at ease. She kindly explained step by step what the treatment was going to involve, so no surprises. The treatment includes a luxurious back, neck and shoulder massage that helps

54

to relieve muscular aches and pains, wonderful news. Then came an intense head and scalp massage followed by a relaxing mineral mud facial that improves the texture of the skin and leaves it feeling soft and supple which leaves your mind and body nourished and relaxed. WildGinger use Spa Find mineral skincare products for this facial because they are packed with revitalising Dead Sea minerals which on absorption, result in healthier looking skin and hair. Mandy explained that almost every skin condition or complaint is partly caused by a mineral or vitamin imbalance within the body. All of the products WildGinger use are reassuringly free from parabens, nuts, gluten, dairy and animal products and

contain only pure essential oils. They are also suitable for sensitive skin and safe to use during pregnancy. The room was filled with atmospheric Himalayan rock salt lamps, essential oils filled the air and relaxing music was playing in the background. Mandy was professional through and through, extremely skilled and very knowledgeable. I didn’t want the treatment to end, it was sheer heaven and I felt my aches, pains and stress disappear. And my complexion following the mud facial was smooth and radiant and felt fabulous. I’d happily give them 10 out of 10 for the whole experience – a real physical and mental booster! THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

There are no limitations to what the vision board contains. But it needs to include things you want to achieve and accomplish – your personal goals. The sky is the limit here. Go ahead, dream big!

COACH N

Katrina Love on the power of making choices

Vision of the future

Y

OU WILL HAVE heard of the expression “If it’s meant to be it will be”? I like this expression, however a more powerful thought to have is “If it’s meant to be it’s up to me.” But to get what we want we need to make choices, have visions and plans... and then take the actions needed to help us achieve our goals. Some obstacles that we come up against are actually not knowing exactly what we want and then when we do “forgetting” to take the action. This is where a vision board could come in handy. A vision board is a collage of images, pictures and affirmations of your dreams and goals. It is designed to inspire and motivate. Putting your ideas together in a visual way feeds into the subconscious mind which is the main driver for our conscious actions and decisions. This reminds you on a daily basis of what you want and which direction you are moving towards. So start by thinking about what you want and then finding pictures or words to stick on your board. The act of doing this itself can be therapeutic, fun and motivational. Then place the board in a predominant place – where simply you just can’t miss it (on the fridge, as a screen save, on your desk) – anywhere you can see it regularly.

May/June 2019 Vanilla

OW YOU HAVE the basis, your vision board will only work if you are prepared to take the actions or allow the opportunity to happen. Practising positive actions make them a reality. This said, do bare in mind that the road to success is ‘permanently under construction’! Be ready for detours, road works and sometimes stop signs. We need to be flexible, as sometimes what we wish for will change along the way. Take the word ‘failure’ out of your vocabulary as that word doesn’t exist on this journey – instead let’s experience learnings and perhaps the power of making other choices. When you achieve something you desire acknowledge it, high five yourself and celebrate this success before you move on. Approach the future with excitement because right now, before you, is a life of unlimited opportunities. Your future awaits...

Hit a different type of bar! Nina Parnham, founder of Suffolk Women's Wellness Centre, on barre classes

I

t’s new, it’s hot right now, it’s one of the latest classes taking the fitness world by storm. Train like a dancer with Barre classes at Suffolk Woman’s Wellness Centre in Ipswich. Just when you think you have tried it all, we introduce this fantastic form of physical exercise to your weekly schedule. It is distinguishable from other group fitness classes through it’s use of the ballet ‘barre’, and uses a sequence of movements inspired and derived from ballet. It also uses the disciplines followed by both Yoga and Pilates. There is no doubt that a barre class will be challenging, but the elegant movements will be uplifting both physically and mentally. You will start become aware of your posture, muscle definition, weight loss and

56

increased flexibility. But your mind is just as important as your body, and a major benefit of Barre is the reduction of stress. It is a head to toe workout, perfect for women who are short on time – something we all favour! Starting to sound like a little bit of you? Let us share with you a little bit of what to expect. During the class you will be combining both strength training and cardio. You won’t be at the barre the whole time; but ordinarily we will start with a ‘borrow from ballet’ by going into; First position: Feet flat, heels

together, toes point out to the side Relevé: Balance on the balls of

your feet Plié: Bending your knees These classic ballet movements

are mixed in with elements like glute work, abdominal work, cardio and stretching. The use of floor exercises, light weights, Pilates bands and balls help to achieve that extra burn. If you’re shaking, you are doing it right! All abilities are welcome, and you do not need a dance background. Anyone can benefit from it, and this method of exercise is adaptable to where you are in your journey. n For more information on Barre classes and other services contact: Suffolk Woman’s Wellness Centre t: 01473 730035 e: nina@swwcuk.com. HYPNOTHERAPY

CAN HELP...

If you suffer from exam nerves

Very soon, many teenagers will be sitting exams and the pressure for some of them will feel overwhelming. Their expectations, the fear of failure and of letting themselves, parents and teachers down can sometimes just get all too much. Feeling nervous before an exam is natural and can be a motivator to do that little bit more revision, however sometimes these feelings can spiral out of control. Some tips to help include:

● Have a timetable to organise what revision you are going to tackle each day. This helps break things down into more manageable chunks and ensure you’ve got time for everything ● Ask teachers for past papers and examples of good answers. Have a go at some yourself ● Highlight or use mind maps for key points for a subject ● Take regular breaks and do something you enjoy. You deserve time off! ● Exercise, eat well and go to bed early to help your brain rest and recuperate ● Remember your best is good enough If you are really struggling, hypnotherapy is a common method used to help control exam nerves rather than letting them control you. One to two sessions can help you to approach the exam in a calm state of mind and with a cool, focused head, quietening that negative internal mind chatter and replacing it with positive thoughts. It helps to boost confidence, helping you to recall the information you need easily and correctly. You still have to do the study, I can’t hypnotise you to get an A*, but I can help you to be calm, relaxed and confident so you are able to do the best you can. Good luck to all taking exams this summer. For further information: Helen Wyer t: 07795 832740 e: www.advancehypnotherapy.biz www.advancehypnotherapy.biz

Based in Wherstead, at the Suffolk Food Hall, the company was started by brothers Jules and Ryan Paine. Their shared love for gorgeous interiors has led them to develop a style that sets them apart in terms of quality and service, for both domestic and commercial interiors. environment. “The tiles we stock range from elegant Italian porcelain and beautiful handmade encaustic, to wood and concrete effect. Each one has its own merits and can add glamour, chic and beauty to a home or commercial space. “Natural stone tells a fascinating story about the past, taking us back through time with fossils and their intriguing patterns. We stock a vast array of beautiful Italian marble and travertine, plus robust limestone and sandstone. The cool beauty of stone cannot be replicated and it brings a unique quality. “Luxury vinyl is very popular, because it’s practical as well as beautiful. Avoda Stein stocks a range of over 1,000 different luxury vinyl tiles from 20 different manufacturers. This reflects the diverse nature of this type of flooring and it’s a popular choice with architects for both commercial and domestic projects. “Wall coverings are another way to add style and design. We offer

a sophisticated range from leading designers and manufacturers, which deliver vivid colour, innovative designs and lovely illustrations.” So what trends are Avoda Stein seeing in the interior design world? What are people looking for these days? “Natural is always popular, stone, wood and of course wood effect is now much more accessible, affordable and practical. People want something unique in their home, whether it’s something fresh and modern, or a more classic look. It’s very personal. “In the commercial world of retail, hotels and restaurants, competition is fierce to create a stunning space that will ‘wow’ and engage customers, make them feel at home and encourage them to return. Graham started the business with his wife, Barbara but nearly 25 years later, she fell seriously ill so asked her son Darrell to join the family business. He of course accepted. Barbara sadly passed away three weeks later knowing he would be there to support his dad. A party was held last month for customers, suppliers, friends and family. Guests were welcomed by the smell of The Paella and Tapas Company’s tasty Mediterranean food being cooked on site. With more people arriving by the minute, the shop quickly turned into a party befitting their 35 years. Over drinks and food, Darrell mixed with everyone before thoughts turned to a speech

66

Father and son: Darrell and Graham Smith

with Darrell going on to say: “Everyone here has been invited for a reason, special not only to me but to my wife Vicki – who has been my rock and support. All of you know why I joined the business. I won’t say too much as will probably get emotional but thank you, everyone, thank you for supporting us. Loads of you are my customers as well as my friends, it’s very much appreciated and thank you for coming along.”

W

orking closely with Jo Revitt of The Papworth Trust, Darrell took the decision to continue celebrating Archway Carpets 35 years by carrying out 35 acts of kindness for 5 charities over the coming year. The charities are The Papworth Trust; Age UK Suffolk; Emmaus-Ipswich; Rubbish Walks and CALM. Darrell assures us he’s made a start and will keep us updated on

the Archway Carpets Instagram and Twitter feeds. When Graham was asked to reflect on the last 35 years, he said “the business has been a success despite the threat of numerous recessions. To carry on for as long as we have, we must be doing something right.” They certainly are and here’s to many more milestones ahead. ■ www.archwaycarpets.co.uk

NO SWEAT TIPS

for keeping cool in bed this Summer

H

ot weather can wreak havoc with your sleeping patterns, so The Sleep Council has some handy hacks for beating baking bedrooms. Last year’s heatwave saw record temperatures across June, July and August in the UK, but even during a typical British summer, a sudden warm spell can leave people feeling restless and exhausted from lack of sleep. Said Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council: “While every summer may not be as hot as last year, warm spells can be a nuisance when it comes to bedtime. “Ideally bedrooms should be around 16-18°C (60-65°F) but if at night the outside temperature remains higher, or your bedroom has retained the heat from the day, it can be difficult to keep cool. “Your body temperature needs to lower slightly before you go to sleep which is why it can be difficult to drop off when you’re too hot.”

68

Here are some of Lisa’s simple and effective tips to help you stay cool and comfortable in bed this summer:

1 Open windows – and doors – to create a cool draught through your bedroom. Draw curtains or blinds during the day to block the sun out and keep your room cooler at night. 2 If you’ve got an attic, try opening the hatch. Hot air rises and this will give it somewhere to go. 3 Get rid of the duvet and blankets and sleep with just a cotton sheet – or a duvet with a low tog rating. 4 Wear light cotton nightwear – this is actually better than wearing nothing at all as natural fabric will absorb any perspiration. 5 Have a cool shower or bath before bedtime to lower your core body temperature. 6 Drink plenty of cold water during the evening and keep a glass by the bed. 7 Avoid too much caffeine, alcohol or a big meal before bedtime as this can make you feel hot in the middle of the night because of dehydration and over-active digestion. 8 Pull out your hot water bottle, but fill it with ice cold water and have it in bed with you. 9 Chill a pillow case in the fridge before bedtime or try one of the new cooling pillows that are available to buy – both will help you keep a cool head!

Nourish is dog and pony friendly and open Wednesdays to Sundays! Meanwhile back in Ipswich, THE GREEN ROOM on St Margaret’s Green, adjacent to Christchurch Park, even boasts its own dog menu! The café is also providing local artists a space to exhibit their latest works. Richard White will be one of the first artists to occupy the walls of the café with an exhibition running from 17th June – 30th June.

CROWDFUNDING FOR RESTAURANT Third generation Woodbridge baker, David Wright of the Cake Shop Bakery in Woodbridge Suffolk has teamed up with DJ BBQ, aka Christian Stevenson, to transform David’s 73 year old family bakery and newer Fire Station Café and coffee roastery into a multi-dimensional all-day restaurant and café celebrating food cooked with fire – the best bread, coffee and wood-fired pizzas as well as Stevenson’s burgers and BBQ food. To achieve their dream, the pair have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise the needed £75,000 to kit out the new restaurant. David and Christian have developed exciting rewards as thanks to anyone who invests in the campaign. www.kickstarter.com

S

OUTHWOLD is the star of the Suffolk seaside, and The Swan its landmark hotel, with a beautiful building dating back to the 1600s. The Adnams family bought The Swan back in 1872, opening their eponymous and now worldfamous brewery at the same time. With such a prestigious

72

past, Adnams are renowned for their future-thinking ethical and ecologically considerate approach to everything they do. And there’s no time like the present to visit The Swan as the newly-refurbished Still Room, a beautifully inviting brasserie epitomises this Adnams spirit of a strong heritage, with copper light fittings, a vintage inspired mirrored bar, the warm glow of amber, dark green walls and lavish gilt framed portraits, as a backdrop to a very modern menu and an array of inventive Adnams tipples. Aperitifs include French 75 – Adnams Copper House Gin with Adnams champagne and lemon juice, a Negroni with

Adnams First Rate gin, Martini Rosso and Campari, or try the fabulously glamourous Vodka Martini with Adnams Longshore vodka, dry vermouth, served dirty or clean, shaken or stirred. Of course, there’s a gin menu – the Rising Sun gin, (served here with Fevertree elderflower tonic, ginger and lime) is made using rye grown by Jonathan Adnams at his farm a mile away, with the addition of Japanese matcha tea, lemongrass and a special blend of botanicals. The starters are inventive and delicious. Scorched mackerel was divine, on top of a pile of mackerel tartare with kimchi and soy gel. The cured loin of beef was served with pickled prune, mizuna, lemon olive oil and parmesan. Vanilla May/June 2019

Jerusalem artichoke soup is accompanied by a smoked egg yolk, pear and truffle. Ceviche of skrei cod comes with pomelo dressing and an avocado sorbet. There’s confit of duck leg pastilla with duck liver parfait, rhubarb and tarragon. The butternut squash parfait is served with sherry vinegar, pickled mushroom, pine nut and a dry hop lager crisp.

M

AIN COURSES are similarly clever cooking, expertly executed with great attention to detail and flavour. This is no ordinary steak and fries – chargrilled aged ribeye of beef is served with bone marrow, watercress, melted onion, triple cooked chips and a

whipped Bearnaise sauce. Roast Suffolk chicken breast has a parsley crumb, cannellini beans, charred leek, confit tomatoes and wild garlic. Torched Wester Ross salmon is with pak choi, mushrooms, spring onions, tamarigel, kombu dashi broth. Pan fried fillet of seabass is with charred and pickled purple sprouting broccoli, smoked almond, buttermilk and apple dill oil. The desserts are startingly beautiful too. Ginger panacotta with rhubarb, pistachio and buttermilk sorbet was so light yet lavish. Orange tart was piquant and sweet with burnt orange, caramel and a rye whiskey ice cream. Warm apple and date tart is served with sour apple gel and Adnams

Broadside ice cream. White chocolate mousse with almond dacquoise and limoncello espuma. The Adnams experience at The Swan is a joy. The dining room glamour makes eating here a very special occasion, at affordable prices. The relaxed and stylish setting and the thoughtful attention to detail in the menu, presentation and service make for a very memorable meal and adds yet extra sparkle to Southwold’s (and Adnams) Suffolk star status. Highly recommended. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

STUARY WINE BAR is a contemporary and modern venue located in the heart of Manningtree. The inspiration behind Estuary came from owner Rowan Hunter’s love of Italian Enoteca paired with the interiors of smokey Soho wine bars. He wanted to make the bar a point of difference from the quintessential English pubs within the local area by focusing on fine wines, cold tapas and gins. Each month they hold a local art exhibition/wall take over that allows a local artist to showcase their collection. And if you’re after live acoustic music the bar holds Sunday chill days, when they get a local band or singer / songwriter in – no need to book just pop in get a table and relax. Rowan tries to source as locally as possible – using the local bakery, Manningtree Bakehouse and Gather 77 who supply amazing beers and spirits from East Anglian producers.

“The area is becoming an affluent commuter belt for London. I overheard people saying they wanted something new and different – I thought an upmarket wine bar would meet that demographic....”

Wine bar owner, Rowan Hunter

The bar is the perfect spot to catch up with friends or bring a book and order a large red then sit back and watch the world pass by from the window bar top. Worth noting too they are dog friendly and have biscuits waiting for those like fourlegged guests! Rowan has been in the hospitality trade now for over 10 years and has learnt that people like the unknown and quirky so he always tries to have some different on offer whether you’re a weekly regular or a once a month drop-in. Four or five special gins grace the bar top each week and a red and white wine of the week, so there’s always something different on every visit. estled deep in the Suffolk countryside, somewhere between Framlingham, Ipswich and Woodbridge is the pretty village of Cretingham, home to Kingfishers, a welcoming oasis in a sea of green. At the end of a long private drive, Kingfishers has a country club feel – there’s the pristine golf course, 120 acres of beautiful parkland and woodlands with nature trails and mapped walking routes, a spacious bar and brasserie, a newly opened studio and luxury lodges. The food here is a highlight – lovingly prepared with a menu designed to appeal to all appetites, ages and occasions. The conservatory-style high ceiling dining room is light and airy for lunch, brunch or afternoon tea, and cosy with a wood-burner once evening sets in. Small plates and light lunches are interesting and intricate like feta, balsamic onions and red pepper salad with smoked trout or grilled chicken, a platter of the crispest whitebait with a cool pool of lemon aioli and cherry tomato salad. Or choose ham hock fritter with poached egg and hollandaise, or a sun-dried tomato, rocket and caper bruschetta. Daily specials showcase the chef’s talents – surf and turf a May/June 2019 Vanilla

lovely minute steak topped with garlicky saute tiger prawns, a roasted beef tomato and a gorgeously rich gravy on the side, and a huge pile of hand-cut chips. Or pan roast duck breast was served with pak choi, new potatoes and Asian dressing. A paprika grilled chicken breast was delicious a top Spanish style stew of richly roasted tomatoes, chorizo, butter beans and cauliflower. Alongside the usual classics such as Adnams beer battered haddock, with hand cut chips, peas and tartare sauce, and chargrilled beef burger with smoked cheddar served with coleslaw, and fries, there are substantial vegetarian options, like tagliatelle with roast red pepper, cherry tomato and tenderstem broccoli or torched halloumi and portobello burger with tomato salsa and fries. Gorgeous desserts are also homemade masterpieces – a deeply divine chocolate mousse

alongside slithers of meringue and a fun and fruity raspberry sorbet, or the lovely lemon tart, creamy and citrussy. Kingfishers also does a superb afternoon tea, with all bread, scones and cakes homemade, and a new woodfired oven serves pizzas in the al fresco eating area. On a beautiful day in May a trip out to Kingfishers is a perfect way to enjoy the gorgeous wilds of Suffolk, and a lovely meal with the finest local ingredients delivered with imagination and style. Mel Menhams Cupboard Love

My East Coast Life about cutting all plastic from your life or feeling bad about what you haven’t managed to avoid. Just being aware of the problem and avoiding single-use plastics where you can is important.

Do you have a top tip for someone trying to go plastic free?

Cupboard Love is a mobile and online plastic-free shop run by Mel Menhams. After becoming aware of the environmental issues that face our planet, Mel was inspired by a zero-waste shop in Totnes that was selling dry wholefoods in gravity dispensers. She looked for an equivalent in Suffolk but without success, so she decided to set up her own! Mel currently sells at markets, offers home delivery and ‘click and collect’ from stores around the area.

What made you decide to set up a plastic-free shop?

I started Cupboard Love as a mobile plastic-free shop so that I could help others in Suffolk to reduce their use of plastic. As well as allowing people to refill their own containers, I sell natural and reusable personal care and home products. I want my customers to feel happy with the small and

achievable switches they can make from single-use plastic, some as simple as using washable clothes made from compostable natural fibres instead of plastic kitchen sponges.

Have you found the people of Suffolk receptive to changing their shopping habits and going plastic free?

I now have many regular customers who come and buy from me at markets or online. Some are starting small, but I’m pleased to say that through wordof-mouth and social media, people are hearing about Cupboard Love and spreading the word. I love the conversations with people about how much plastic is being saved by each of their purchases – people can be quite surprised. I am keen to encourage everyone to make the small changes that they can, it’s not

If you want to make a really impactful change, choose a reusable water bottle. Singleuse plastic drink bottles are one of the most common types of plastic waste. Most are not recycled which means they are either incinerated or end up in waterways and on beaches. They will either break down into smaller micro plastics in the sea causing damage to marine life or remain on land for many years.

Do you have a hidden gem on the coast to recommend?

The year before we moved to Woodbridge, we rented a cottage at Bawdsey Quay and it was that stretch of beach, the sun setting over the Deben and the stunning surrounding countryside that inspired us to move here, so that’s definitely a special spot for us.

Where can people find you if they’d like to shop?

Framlingham market on a Tuesday and Woodbridge market on a Thursday. Old Jet Market on the first Saturday of every month and the Emmaus Eco Market in Felixstowe on the third Saturday of every month. Or shop online: www.cupboardlove.shop n
