HOW TO WEAR... ear Underwear as Outerw

BY SUSIE PRITCHARD he ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend is back with a vengeance. So, channel your inner Kate Moss with a slinky nightie or slip, teamed with a leather or faux fur jacket for evening or for a cool daywear look, layer up a silky slip with leggings or tights and a long sleeved T-shirt. For summer music festivals, a vintage slip or frothy nightie strikes the perfect note combined with denim and cowboy boots or, knowing the British weather, maybe wellies and a jumper! A large selection of vintage slips are currently available from Wake Up Little Susie.

40th Anniversary and 20 years in The Lanes

T

HIS JULY, contemporary jewellery boutique, Aurum, celebrates its 40th year of trading in Norwich and will be celebrating with offers and promotions throughout June and July and a birthday party on Saturday 1st July. Jon Maddocks opened his first store with his brother Richard in Timberhill in Norwich in July 1977. The original store specialised in modern silver jewellery, much of it imported from Mexico. “At the time we were probably the only shop selling contemporary silver in East Anglia.” Jon reminisces “Jewellery shops were all very traditional in those days mostly selling gold, but we sought out products that were different and not widely available elsewhere.” The store quickly gained a following with Melanie Woodcock, one of the store’s June/July 2017 Vanilla

first customers, describing it as “vibrant, funky and unique”. While local photographer Julia Holland recalls a craze for our colourful titanium earrings amongst her peers. Jon remembers the first Christmas being so busy that his brother had to go out and buy additional structural support, as they were so concerned the floor was going to collapse! Over the years, the business traded in several locations around the city, before settling at its current location as Aurum on Bedford Street in the Norwich Lanes, in 1997.

I

n 2000, husband and wife team Jon and Carol doubled the size of the store by knocking through to the ladies fashion store next door. Shortly afterwards daughters Charlie and Claire also joined the team. Aurum has always, however,

stuck with its original ethos of stocking unique, contemporary, high quality jewellery. In the mid noughties, Aurum introduced high end designer ranges such as Marco Bicego. Wedding rings and bespoke design have also become an important part of the business. Asked what has changed over the years Jon said “Funnily enough Mexican silver bangles are still some of our best sellers! Although retail has changed a lot over the years and there is far more competition, we still strive to bring our customers something unusual and the passion and customer service that goes hand in hand with being an independent retailer. As a destination shop offering something a little different, our location in the Norwich Lanes fits our business model perfectly.” ■ 40TH ANNIVERSARY OFFER Aurum will be offering 40% off all silver, selected gold and diamonds starting Saturday 3 June. A once in a lifetime sale, never to be repeated! Aurum Jewellers, 21 Bedford St. Norwich NR2 1AR 01603 620741 www.aurumdesign.co.uk

“The idea of taking a matter to court can seem daunting and particularly when there are friendships at stake”

What are my rights if my tenant stops paying the rent? MY QUESTION: Last year I came into some money and decided to invest this by buying a house to rent out. It’s all been going really well but recently my tenant, who is a friend of a friend, has stopped paying the rent. I’ve tried to resolve the issue with him directly but have been unsuccessful and have now decided that I would like him to leave the property. How do I go about evicting him and will I be able to recover the rent that he owes?

B

uy-to-let properties have become very popular in recent years and it can be a sensible financial investment. However, being a landlord is not always straightforward and it is unfortunately not unusual to

38

encounter difficulties, such as you describe. It is particularly disappointing when a tenant comes to you through the recommendation of a friend but of course this does not change your legal rights as a landlord.

It is always worthwhile trying to resolve a tenant dispute by communicating directly with them. However, if you have attempted to do this several times – and it is always advisable to keep a record of all emails or letters, in case these need to be used later down the line – the usual next step is to settle the matter through litigation i.e. taking the tenant to court. TAKING YOUR TENANT TO COURT

If you have let the property under an assured shorthold Vanilla June/July 2017

REAL LIVES tenancy, it is likely that you will be able to regain possession of the property. Before you embark upon any steps to regain possession, you should ensure that you have protected the tenant’s deposit in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme. In addition, if the tenancy started after 30 September 2015, you must ensure that you have provided the tenant with a copy of the leaflet “How to rent: the checklist for renting in England”; an energy performance certificate; and a gas safety certificate. Subject to how long the tenant has been in the property, it is likely that you will need to serve written notice on him under Section 21 of the Housing Act 1988, giving him at least two months’ notice that you require possession of the property. If the tenancy started after 30 September 2015, this notice should be on Tenancy form 6a: Notice seeking possession of a property let on an assured shorthold tenancy (available at www.gov.uk). If the tenant does not vacate the property within the time specified in the notice, you should issue possession proceedings in the local county court. In order to do this, you would need to pay a court fee and submit a claim form and particulars of claim, setting out details of the tenancy and the rent arrears. When the court issues the claim, it will fix a date for the hearing, usually within 4-8 weeks of the date of issue. The court papers must then be June/July 2017 Vanilla

served on the tenant. The tenant may submit a defence to the claim but even if he does not, he will still be able to participate in the possession hearing. You will need to submit evidence in support of your claim ahead of the hearing. At the hearing, the court will either decide whether or not to grant possession, or make further directions for the progression of the claim. If the court grants a possession order (as well as judgment for the rent arrears), it will specify the date (usually within 14 days) on which the tenant must give up possession of the property. If the tenant does not leave on that date, you can then take steps to instruct bailiffs/High Court Enforcement Officers to attend

the property at an appointed time to evict the tenant. ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

The idea of taking a matter to court can seem daunting and particularly when there are friendships at stake, you may find that an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) method can be used. ADR would usually only be considered should there be a dispute between the parties. The most popular choice is mediation, whereby a trained and objective third party will help you to resolve your dispute outside of a courtroom setting. Of course, both parties have to be willing to attend mediation but in the right cases, this can be an effective way of resolving your dispute relatively amicably. ■

We are here to help... For further advice on how to resolve an issue between landlord and tenant, please contact the dispute resolution team at Steeles Law. Our specialist, Denise Traube (right) is on hand to help.

SIXTH FORM LIFE at WYMONDHAM COLLEGE

W

ymondham College is the largest State Boarding School in the country, educating around 650 boarders and a similar number of day students, set amongst 84 acres of rural Norfolk countryside. The College secured ‘outstanding’ judgements from Ofsted in both the last education and boarding inspections and is one of the top 5% highest performing state schools in the UK. Our Sixth Form is a unique community that provides an ideal stepping stone from school to higher education and the world of work. The Lincoln Sixth Form Centre provides outstanding facilities for boarders and day students alike and helps to create an atmosphere that is more university college than secondary school, underpinned by Wymondham College’s commitment to academic excellence and high quality pastoral care. We invite everyone who joins our Sixth Form to become fully June/July 2017 Vanilla

involved in College life. We have College teams in all the major team sports. College drama productions are impressive events, drawing audiences from all over the county, and we hold regular music concerts where our orchestras, bands and choirs are able to showcase their talents.

I

n a typical year, Sixth Formers head off to around 70 difference universities across the UK and overseas and around 95% of Year 13 students every year successfully attain a place at their chosen university. Our “Wymondham Life” after school programme offers over 60 different clubs and societies together with over 700 annual sporting fixtures, an active Cadets unit and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Our wide-ranging international links provide an exciting dimension to many students’ Sixth Form experience, offering opportunities to travel to many parts of the world. The diversity provided through

our international dimension is an important part of our ethos. High quality education with first class facilities is free for day students and with boarding fees at just over £10,000 a year, Wymondham College offers a very attractive alternative to private schooling. The wide range of activities beyond the classroom and the opportunity to build relationships and friendships through boarding is an attractive proposition. Even more attractive is that all of this is available at a fraction of the cost of boarding at independent schools. Why not come and see for yourself? Our Sixth Form Taster Morning is held on Saturday 17th June, from 10am-12.30pm. Parents and young people will have an opportunity to experience life on our Sixth Form, chat with staff and current students and enjoy a BBQ too! KODA are known to make value for money, robust and functional cars. They have a reputation for reliability that other manufacturers look upon with envy. Their ability to produce millimetre perfect at a high quality consistently is now legendary. But this does not mean the ŠKODA products are boring! To drive a ‘production’ car over 200mph on Bonneville salt flats caused some heads to turn – and guess what? That ‘production car’ was a ŠKODA Octavia vRS (with a beefed-up engine)! Today, the ŠKODA Octavia vRS hatch, in its normal road form, encompasses some of the sporty heritage and exciting performance from the brand’s history. It behaves beautifully, with frugal fuel consumption, high safety rating and comfort. It’s only when pushed a little that the wonderful performance becomes apparent. It can corner superbly and accelerates like a scalded cat! This

is a car to elicit driving pleasure – is great fun, sporty when needed and a versatile, comfortable carriage at other times. The exterior looks purposeful without being ostentatious with nice touches such as the vRS badges and sleek looks from being a little lower to the ground with the sports suspension. Inside there are acres of space. I can’t think of any of my taller friends who, even with the front seats pushed fully rearward, would not have more than ample space... meaning passengers can stretch out and enjoy the ride. The front seats, designed exclusively for the vRS, are great for long drives; and if V neck

it’s time for that long drive to run the kids to uni, the boot-space is cavernous! Almost anything can be connected to one’s smart phone these days and ŠKODA have added a bit of fun as well as practicality by including Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity as standard. So now if you need to remember the fuel level in the tank from your armchair, the car can tell your phone. There’s much more to it as well; sat-nav and a complete ‘infotainment’ system are at one’s finger-tips via the touch-screen – all very intuitive to use. The driver aids are typically ŠKODA – in fact this is as well equipped as any of its competition with some lovely touches, such as the torch located in the tailgate trim. Rear parking sensors are standard, and really helpful too, because this Octavia vRS is a big car! High performance, practical, comfortable, all at an eye-catching price; the designers have lived up to their strap-line – Simply Clever! ■ www.robinsonsmotorgroup.co.uk

NORWICH HIGH SCHOOL Inspiring Females – an overview of 2016/17

VanFilILlaE

PRO

I

n June 2016, Norwich High School for Girls launched the Inspiring Females (IF) programme, with the mission to prepare young women for their futures, while creating platforms to explore their questions and represent their voices. Steered very much by a Collective of girls, an ambitious three-day conference was created. Over 30 women from all walks of life were invited to speak to, mentor, work with and ultimately inspire over 190 girls between the ages of 13 and 15. These amazing women who volunteered their time ranged from actress Kate Ashfield to Alice Walpole, the British Ambassador to the Sahel countries of Mali and Niger. Stimulating panel sessions, workshops, and activities covered a range of topics such as 'Women working together to

46

achieve a common goal’, ‘How to be happy’ and ‘Negotiation skills’. Following exceptionally positive feedback from this inaugural conference, a series of unique events has been developed to build upon this momentum, starting with IF of the Future in January. Nine Norwich High alumnae were invited back to share their experiences of life at university and their first forays into the world of work – many reiterating the benefits of seizing the many opportunities available when at school, and the importance of wellbeing. In recognition of all the girls who had cited their mothers as their main source of inspiration, an Inspiring Mums and Daughters event was created for March. This afternoon was packed with bonding activities and practical workshops for daughters, mums (and grandmothers) such as ‘Tips

on making your passion your profession’, ‘Laughter Yoga’ and ‘Meditation’. Over the Easter holiday, two guests from the IF conference returned to the school and set real-life projects to two dedicated teams of girls. Karen Ruthven from Mindspan Global trialled her latest ‘How to deal with rejection’ session, with the girls acting as a sounding board, while Chrissi Rix from the Style Show led the planning of a fashion event which took place at the end of May. The school is now looking forward to building upon the success of the first Inspiring Females conference, moving the next day to OPEN in Norwich and gathering together over 300 young women. Confirmed guests so far include Samira Ahmed (journalist, writer and broadcaster at the BBC) and Cheryl Giovannoni (CEO of the Girls’ Day Schools Trust), with many more to reveal over the next month. OTS OF US really love it but city life can be a bit intense at times. Humans were originally only meant to work the land, rise with the sun and sleep with the moon. The 9 to 5, the full-on, fast-paced, packed British working week should not really have been ours. Luckily, with the yin, comes the yang and maybe this is why life also gave us city spas! In Norwich, we’re blessed to have the Spa at St Giles. You might be unaware of this oasis, which lies beneath the Georgian beauty of St Giles House hotel. Here, relaxation and rejuvenation can be yours without ever leaving the city walls. Whether in desperate need of a weekend catch-up with the girls or a Monday manicure in your lunch hour, the Spa at St Giles is completely focused on making your experience as enjoyable as possible. Whilst it’s currently ever so popular to Spa, if you’ve never done it before, the intimidated mind can easily imagine awkwardness, halfclad Scandinavians and a burly Turkish masseuse. All a bit scary to a newbie.

SPA AT ST GILES

Oasis of tranquility in the heart of Norwich It’s the thoughtful ‘little touches’ that she believes sets the Spa at St Giles apart, especially for us city folk. ‘All of our beds are electronic and extra wide, so everyone is comfortable. Customers can have anything to drink because we have a full bar upstairs and we have showers in each treatment room so if a guest doesn’t want oil on them before they go back to work, we can allow extra time for that.’ Another thing Ashleigh prides herself on is the spa’s bespoke approach to massage. ‘Guests can use that 60 minutes however they want. They could have 30 minutes on their back or

just their neck and scalp done, some people only want their feet treated and not their legs. That time is theirs.’

START LIVING THE LIFE YOU REALLY WANT

ow many of us suffer with emotional problems? Most people struggle at some point in their lives with anxiety, low mood, frustration, self doubt or just feeling generally unhappy. But, here’s another question, how many of us actually do something about it and live the life we really want? Emotionalskills is an organisation in Norwich, Cambridge and Great Yarmouth/Lowestoft, that helps people tackle these issues head on, deal with stress and tension and live happier, fuller lives. Founder and therapist Shane Lutkin, who developed the Emotionalskills programme, has a masters degree in psychotherapy and has first-hand experience of the power of psychotherapy. “For many years I was blighted by anxiety, self doubt, depression and irritation and I didn't really like myself.” Shane says. “Eventually I decided that I needed to change, but couldn’t find any constructive way to ease the tensions I felt. “Someone suggested that

studying could help me focus, and by chance I chose the theory of personality, psychotherapy and counselling, which helped me recognise my true self and deal with my issues. I changed my life radically. Now I'm never low, rarely agitated and life is a lot easier and fuller. I feel I own my life." “I regret and resent those wasted decades of being insular, low and anxious and I slowly realised I could help other emotionally troubled people. So, after years of research and study I developed the Emotionalskills programme.” So how does Emotionalskills work and how can it help? “The programme can prevent people from wasting their lives buried in irritability, anxiety, low esteem, dissatisfaction and in some cases absolute misery,” Shane explains. “There is a step-by-step structure to Emotionalskills, but we develop a customised version for each client, depending on their unique needs.

“We start by talking with the client about what it is that’s worrying them, in a relaxed, confidential, comfortable environment. This stage is vital, because it establishes client therapist trust and shows that we are not here to judge, only to accept, empathise and help." “We uncover thoughts and feelings about how the client would like to change and start to develop a way forward, discussing how their mind works and discovering who the client really is and how we can guide them to a better life. Mindfulness, self discovery and changing ingrained damaging habits are all methods we use to help reveal a more confident and contented person at the conclusion.” What kind of people can benefit from this type of therapy? “We work with adults who are experiencing emotional pain; women, men, teenagers, parents, older people and stressed couples. My experience suggests whilst some men tend to bottle it up and soldier on; many women undersell themselves, settling for less. In many ways these women have restricted their genuine potential by not developing their true selves and living the life they truly deserve." “There is no need to suffer the draining dissatisfaction that life can sometimes bring. There is a way to change yourself and your life for the better – it might just take one initial step.”■ For a free introductory consultation, contact Emotionalskills on 07986488690 or go to www.emotionalskills.uk

BLINDS FOR HAYFEVER RELIEF! This year Louvolite have introduced a cutting edge fabric treatment called Pollergen that can help with hayfever relief. Hayfever is essentially an allergy to pollen. When a fabric is treated with Pollergen, it captures pollen and makes it harmless. Louvolite says: “Does it really work? Well, independent testing by the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research unit has concluded that a Pollergen-treated fabric shows over 50% reduction in grass pollen allergen when compared to an untreated control fabric.” Pollergen is available from Norwich Sunblinds for Roller blinds, Vertical blinds and Pleated blinds, for the home and office. www.norwichsunblinds.co.uk

ew double glazed PVCu windows can add considerable value to a property and are considered essential by most buyers. uPVC windows require very little maintenance, are energy efficient and, depending on design and installation, can be very secure. For Mr & Mrs Witham it was a big decision to change their windows. They have lived in their Norwich home since it was built 25 years ago and the original timber windows had come to the end of their life. The couple considered replacing the wooden windows with like-for-like oak window frames but, after weighing up the pros and cons, opted for the benefits of uPVC: “I’m too old to be staining and treating wooden window frames every year,” joked Mr Witham. “We wanted something that would be maintenance-free.” Mr & Mrs Witham obtained several quotes from local

64

suppliers and chose Broadland Windows for the job. They chose stylish woodgrain effect window frames in Agate Grey on the outside, with an off-white woodgrain on the inside to fit with their neutral decor. “Other companies were charging more for a different colour inside, so we were delighted when Broadland Windows said that there would be no additional cost to have what we wanted,” said Mr Witham. “Because we were replacing timber windows it was important to us to replicate the look of wooden frames – Broadland understood that and worked with us to achieve equal sightlines using dummy sashes, he recommended a window with a high quality Georgian bar and we chose the monkeytail handles to really finish off the look. ““The house feels warmer and the windows look great. We couldn’t be happier customers!”

antone’s colour of the year is supposed to be a predictor of what will be big in 2017 and there’s no doubt we are seeing a very green 2017. Colour of the year is a zingy yellow-green called Greenery. This shade combines the cheerfulness of yellow and the refreshing quality of blue so suits most rooms. Mimicking nature’s palate, green satisfies the current trend of blurring the outdoors and indoors.

THE LIGHT TOUCH

THE NORWICH HOUSING MARKET

Affectionately nicknamed by her clients as the ‘Kirstie Allsopp of Norwich’, fully qualified estate agent and founder of Reality, Lucy Carne gives us the lowdown on the Norwich housing market in 2017.

HOW ARE NORWICH HOUSE PRICES FARING?

Certain parts of Norwich seem to be going from strength to strength – NR1 and the Golden Triangle especially! We recently took a property to the market on Grove Avenue and we had 21 viewings! The property was only live on Rightmove for 72 hours! HAS THE POLITICAL CLIMATE EFFECTED THE LOCAL HOUSING MARKET?

Slightly! When the media circus is in town and shouting about Brexit and the elections, people tend to sit tight on the lead up to an election. However this is a great time to sell and monopolise as there is generally a shortage of new instructions around this time. WHAT IS THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER TYPE OF PROPERTY?

Buyers LOVE character properties! Ceiling roses, feature fire places, wooden floors all of the hallmarks of a Victorian property. 1950’s houses are equally in demand as they tend to have good size gardens for the family buyer. 2017 ESTAS Silver Award win: Reality Director Lucy Carne, Adam Thompson and TV’s property Guru Phil Spencer

Lighting expert SOPHIE AMES The Norfolk Lighting Co. DINING ALFRESCO

Longer light in summer evenings make the perfect excuse for dining alfresco. Here are our top tips on how to use lighting to enhance outdoor dining… Where to start?

There are some practical requirements to lighting an outdoor dining area, as well as a need to create an ambience, so whatever the function, keep in mind: ● Size of your outdoor dining area and any structures, decking, pathways or patio you need to illuminate. ● Power source. Fixed, electrical lights need to be connected to the mains, so ideal for lighting close to the house. Solar lights are great too and portable so can be moved if needed. ● Environmental impact: Consider temperature, glare and energy efficiency to minimise impact on the environment and avoid annoying your neighbours! MY TOP TIPS…

Be Practical: For serious after dark outdoor cooking, task lighting is required. Include wall-mounted lights to focus on work surfaces. Use lanterns to define raised areas and obstacles for safety. Create an ambience: Add light to the centre of a dining table for more intimacy or a chandelier to a structure for a dramatic effect. Get the effect: Wiring lamps to a dimmer switch inside the house allow you to control brightness levels and importantly, avoid direct light on guests. Tree and string lights create atmosphere and a festive mood. NEED MORE LIGHTSPIRATION?

We can help you achieve that special effect for your outdoor lighting project. Visit our showroom at Taverham Garden Centre to see our new outdoor lighting display.

STYLE FILE

Don’t be afraid to be bold with colour

BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIOR DESIGN

13. Floor coverings Like a wallcovering, carpet can change the look of your room dramatically. The latest styles are bold, but there are also some great understated designs around if you prefer a more subtle look. Here’s our low-down of the latest carpet trends. ● COLOURS Colours are becoming bolder, with designs in rich red, chocolate brown and beautiful tones of blue, from navy to aqua. Rich tones will look smart in living and dining areas, while the softer shades are an ideal choice for bedrooms. If you’re going really bold, take a sample home to make sure it works in your interior. ● PATTERN Pattern is growing in popularity again, especially stripes, chevrons and checks. When choosing a pattern, the general rule is that larger and bolder patterns are best suited to bigger rooms. Carpets with small patterns in a mix of colours are good for busy rooms as they can help disguise day-to-day wear and marks, whereas bright colours can make a real style statement. ● TEXTURE Texture adds interest to carpets in neutral tones, such as beige or brown, and can be used in most rooms. It can be as subtle as a flatweave herringbone design, or more defined with chunky bobbles. Avoid using textured carpet in a dining room as food spillages can be hard to remove. ● RUGS & RUNNERS Striped runners are a winner on staircases and in long hallways to add interest if the rest of the floors are neutral. And rugs – there's loads of lovely textures, colours, shapes and sizes available– will add instant drama or soften a room.

A Norfolk business is bringing an ancient English fruit back to our tables. Jane Steward of EASTGATE LARDER grows medlars on her six-acre plot near Aylsham, and makes fine jelly and fruit cheese exclusively from Norfolk-grown fruit. She gave up her job as an executive coach and threw herself into her mission of reviving interest in this delicious, neglected fruit. Jane researched and developed recipes, making the products herself on her Aga at Eastgate. She now has a young orchard of over 100 Nottingham medlar trees and is developing a national collection of all available varieties.

GOOD NEWS FOR VEGANS Since opening its doors in Magdalen Street in December last year, Little Shop of Vegans has been keen to offer customers an ever-increasing range of tasty vegan foods. Shoppers can now stock up on everything from frozen pizza, readymeals and vegan cheeses to gourmet nut butters, cookies, marshmallows and vegan ‘crunchie’ bars, with fresh cakes and savoury rolls available at the weekends. Whether shoppers are vegan, vegetarian or simply looking for dairy-free alternatives, Little Shop of Vegans has something to offer everyone. As well as food, the shop stocks candles, body lotion, bath bombs, beanies, books, mugs, t-shirts, tote bags and more – making it a great place to visit when gift shopping for a veggie or vegan family member or friend. MAMBO JAMBO

Mambo Jambo is a ‘hot ’n happening’ Mexican and South American restaurant on Lower Goat Lane which is a great spot for lunch, dinner or a night out with friends. They will be closed from 19 June to mid September for refurbishment, and Vanilla finds out from owner Martin Jamieson and his girlfriend Natalie Pye what we can expect from Mambo Jambo when it reopens. What improvements are you making at Mambo Jambo?

We have been in the building for 21 years and feel it’s time to make some changes. The building is 18th Century Grade II listed, so any works were always going to be complicated, hence our 3-month time scale. Improvements to the kitchen and washrooms are the main changes, the chefs definitely need more space as we do around 350 covers on a Saturday. It’s important that our loyal customers can see what we are doing, and know that we will be back and open again soon, so during the closure we will keep our social media channels updated on progress. We’re looking forward to you opening again, what sizzling things will we see on the menu when you do?

Along with the usual classic chicken, combos, tacos and fajitas we are working on some

78

exciting new dishes and changes to our wine/cocktail menus. Come along in September and all will be revealed! What makes Mambo Jambo so special?

We are a family-run business and we have a hands on approach and love what we do. Most of our staff have been with us for over 10 years and some nearer 20, so we have a proven passion for good food and continuity of service. We can cater for large parties up 40 in our side restaurant, so we are great for major events. We’ve been here for 21 years and worked in the industry for a lot longer, which means we know what customers want. But we need to move with the times, and we now have a 2 or 3 course set lunch time menu, gluten free

menu, and kids eat free 4 - 6 Sunday to Fridays. Any special events or party nights coming up later in the year?

Our opening night of course, that will be a very special occasion, and we really want people to come and help us celebrate. We’ll keep social media posted on a date. Christmas party season is huge for us, and there will be plenty going on. We want all our customers to know that during the refurb they can still make telephone bookings as normal. See you in September! Mambo Jambo, 14-16 Lower Goat Lane, Norwich NR2 1EL Tel: 01603 666802 Vanilla June/July 2017

LIFE IS SWEET!

EARLY A YEAR after opening on St John Maddermarket, in Norwich, Figbar is riding high on a wave of positive vibes from customers who have embraced the concept of a bar and restaurant where high-end desserts are the main event. Stephanie Garbutt owns and runs the business with her husband Jaime. “We were busy from the get-go, and I think it’s because we offered something so totally different,” Stephanie explains. “We don’t fit neatly into any traditional description of a café or restaurant, we are unique, and people in Norwich really love independent suppliers and fresh new ideas.” Their success also has a lot to do with the sheer quality of the desserts Jaime produces. He is a very rare thing; a highly skilled

82

Michelin-trained pastry chef who has worked with the best. “Jaime loves desserts, and believes they should make more of an impact, rather than being just an afterthought at the end of a meal,” says Stephanie. “Many customers come here to enjoy a dessert for its own sake, or to round off a meal somewhere else.” I speak from experience when I say that Jaime’s gorgeous creations are mouthwatering. His popular ‘Snickers’ dessert is salted butter caramel, peanut parfait, and an indulgent chocolate mousse – paradise on a spoon! So is this a new trend, going out to eat just dessert? “I think people are becoming much more adventurous with what they eat and when, but the quality and taste have to be excellent too,” Stephanie explains. “The business idea came about

because we wanted to turn our shared love of dessert into something we could enjoy doing together every day. It’s more than just a job, it’s a lifestyle and a family business. Our two-year-old daughter Ella is now learning to bake with Jaime, and I am learning the skill of pairing sherry and other wines with desserts. “Sourcing locally is very important to us for both ingredients and the drinks we serve, such as Adnams and Bullards Gin. It helps to forge strong relationships in the area, and the positive welcome we received from other Norwich businesses has been overwhelming.” It looks like life is sweet for Jaime, Stephanie, Ella and 8-month-old Ariele. If you want a taste of it too, pop in to Figbar and try it for yourself? LUCY OHSTEN

Donna Fox Style Director, John Olivers

My City Life Donna Fox has been Style Director at hair professionals John Olivers, in Norwich, for 23 years. She lives on the North Norfolk coast with husband Dominic and cat, Simon.

What do you love about Norwich? It is a very special city, and I am very lucky to work on Elm Hill, which is a beautiful and historic street. Norwich is such a cultural city, the history is fascinating, and I love to walk around the cathedral and castle. But it’s also a very friendly place, small enough to walk everywhere. There is always something new to experience and so many independent shops that it makes shopping so much more fun.

What makes John Olivers so special?

How do you know what cut and colour will suit a customer to achieve their perfect look? There are many elements to this, but it starts with talking to the customer about what they want, the lifestyle they lead, how much time they want to spend looking after their hair. Then we look at skin tone, shape of the face and what style will suit the person’s overall image. We don’t just look at the face, it’s more holistic than that, it’s about a complete look and working with what you’ve got to achieve the best results. There is also a great deal of gut feeling and experience that goes into a

What are your hidden gems in the city?

consultation. A good hair stylist will always be willing to learn, change and progress and I am constantly training and refreshing my skills and knowledge. I’m very lucky to work with a wonderful creative team here, and we are always sharing new ideas and techniques.

What do you like to do when you are not working? We live in Mundesley and my husband and I love to walk on the coast. The scenery is incredibly beautiful. We also enjoy diving, which means wearing very thick wet suits in the cold waters here, and we go skiing when we can. Sewing and knitting are passions of mine too, so I am always creating something.

I love St Benedict’s, it’s such a funky street, packed with vintage shops, great eateries and bars. It has a great vibe. My latest find is a great jewellers next door to us on Elm Hill called Stoned & Hammered. She will make or adjust anything for you, certainly my recommendation for a hidden ‘gem’.

Where are your favourite places to eat in Norwich? Olives, at the bottom of Elm Hill, is a great deli cafe for snacks, lunch or breakfast. Their pastries are to die for! The new Jive Kitchen on Exchange Street makes the most delicious fresh Mexican tapas. And Frank’s Bar on Bedford Street is a firm favourite of ours, always great food and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Norwich has so many great places to eat and drink. INTERVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

When I came to Norwich from South Wales 25 years ago I was lucky enough to train with John Oliver himself. He was a very special man and his legacy is that the business is still going strong since he started it in 1965. I think what sets us apart from other hair stylists is that we are committed to fostering and encouraging young talent. Our aim is to always deliver the best possible quality to customers, and passing on that ethos to the next generation of talented stylists.
