independents. It is beautiful and in the heart of Norwich, not to be missed really.” Many locals have excitedly unwrapped an Abraxas box on Christmas morning and Jenny is rightly proud of the store’s solid reputation for beautiful, individually crafted jewellery. She has also ensured her shop has moved with the times and today the fabulous jewellery on offer aims to reflect the customer’s demand for unique and contemporary designs from all over the world. CHIC BRANDS
Owners of Aluna J, sisters Lisa Morgan and Jo Lockwood, are also excited as they have secured new brands to augment their sought-after fashion ranges which include Ichi, Andamio, Smashed Lemon and Geisha. “Being independent means that we can offer our customers affordable designs often with exclusivity so when you step out in one of our outfits you are unlikely to spot someone else wearing the same thing,” said Lisa. They are particularly proud to have exclusive handmade jewellery brand Ashiana, which is also stocked by the likes of Harvey Nichols and Harrods of London, occasion dresses from The Pretty Dress Company worn by celebs such as Nigella Lawson and Myleene Klass and have recently secured super chic Parisian brand, Sinéquanone.

Newcomer Simply Pearls is owned by Julie Hutchinson who first started selling her pearl jewellery online from her home in Somerset. She said: “I didn’t know Norwich at all when I moved here but was immediately struck by the beauty of the arcade and the stylish shops it houses. “People think pearls are expensive but they don’t have to be. I offer a range that covers lots of price points from £15 for pearl stud earrings to several thousand pounds for Tahitian pearl jewellery.” Fine leather goods retailer The Tannery is owned by Lindsay Furniss, who expanded to Norwich in 2010 following the success of her shop in Holt. She carefully selects goods which have been sourced from traditional workshops across Europe. The city store is managed by Marcia Jefferies, who said: “The arcade is such a beautiful and unique retailing space and we wanted to be part of it. It really is a hidden gem.” The Tannery offers the season’s must-have handbags, briefcases, gloves, shoes and small leather accessories, so that you can buy the perfect present for someone else, or just for you! OU MIGHT be forgiven for thinking you are in a swish New York-style department store the next time you pay a visit to the women’s fashion floor in Norwich’s Jarrold store. And you would not be far wrong, because some of the inspiration behind the new-look clothes department has been taken from the way retailers do it across the pond. The in excess of £500,000 refurbishment of the ladies wear department was completed just in time for unveiling to a VIP launch party and fashion show, held on September 8. The much-anticipated transformation is awesome and already setting social media buzzing with the city’s fashionconscious women enthusiastically commenting on it. “It was a great launch night and although it wasn’t an evening focused on sales, we did really well, so that was a bonus,” said Michelle. In the two weeks prior to the launch sales had in fact already risen by 20 percent.
October/November 2015 Vanilla
In its bid to be the UK’s best independent department store, Jarrold’s management is keen to stay ahead of the bricks and mortar competition and offer something which the behemoth online market is unable to do. “Our customers come in for inspiration, so we aim to offer more of a fun shopping experience,” said Michelle. “It is very important to offer fantastic service and be prepared to invest in the little touches like the personal shopper, nice restaurants and lots of fun events.”
T
HE REALISATION after the menswear department was given its once-over two years ago was that the women’s wear department needed some TLC, and so began its revamp journey. The same design team consisting of Simon May from Kent-based Furniss and Mark Brown from Now London were brought in again. “Simon and Mark really
understand the Jarrold brand, that sort of combination of stylishness and contemporary feel with a bit of a heritage twist,” said Michelle.
D
ETERMINED to set a number of things right within the ladies department, Michelle went to New York and learned a lot from her trip. She said: “I knew we had some things wrong. I have watched very carefully how brands work together and wanted to make sure we got the adjacencies right this time. “We have been guilty of overstocking in the past so we have been more modest in our buying and now it is much easier and calmer to shop our rails.” The icing on the cake is the introduction of two major brands, Mint Velvet (a Vanilla favourite) and Polo Ralph Lauren. “We are very excited to have them and are hoping for great things as a result,” she said. ALBROW & SONS A jewellery box of delights!
ORWICH is full of impressive landmarks – and anyone who knows the city will recognise the striking pink, three-storey listed building on All Saint’s Green that is home to Albrow & Sons, one of Norwich’s best-known family jewellers. Established 25 years ago, Albrow has earned a reputation for the most superb quality antique jewellery and silver, and there is a dizzying selection of the most gorgeous pieces on display. Albrow’s speciality is Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco rings, necklaces, brooches and jewellery of all kinds, silverware such as candlesticks and tea sets – plus some delightful curiosities such as collar stiffeners and snuff boxes! It really is a glittering and eclectic array of fascinating history.

The family business is now run by Richard Albrow Senior and his sons Harvey and Richard. Manager, James Burton, oversees the shop on a day-today basis.
V
ANILLA caught up with Harvey Albrow to find out how these treasures come into the shop. “We source our pieces from all over the country, especially the larger items. But much of the jewellery and silver we have here is brought in to us by people looking to sell their antiques. “Antiques have an incredibly rich and interesting history – the knowledge that you can buy a ring that someone wore hundreds of years ago adds a real mystery and is utterly compelling. Our biggest seller has always been diamond rings. Many people prefer an antique engagement or

eternity ring – its history makes it more special and gives it a timeless quality. “Fashion has a great deal to do with what we buy and sell. Antique pieces are technically over 100 years old, but vintage is very sought after, as are pieces that have an interesting design. So the right item can be very saleable, even if it’s only 10 years old.” Albrow offers more than just buying and selling antiques. It also carries out valuations (for both probate and insurance) and repairs, which are done on the premises, as well as rethreading and silversmithing. For the more personal touch, Albrow can also design and handcraft jewellery at the shop. So if you want the most amazing and diverse range of antique jewels and much more, pay Albrow a visit – we challenge you to leave empty handed! ■

“My landlord says the rising damp is not his problem. Now I’m not sure what to do...”
Who is responsible? You or your landlord... MY QUESTION:
I recently moved into a flat and noticed rising damp on the walls. I told my landlord but he is saying he is not obliged to sort out the problem. Is my landlord responsible?
40
F
IRSTLY, check the terms of your tenancy agreement. See if there is an express obligation on your landlord to keep the property “in good condition” or “clean and tidy”. If there is, you may be able to establish a wider responsibility on your landlord than would be implied by the law. If there is no express term,
Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 implies landlord repairing covenants into most periodic tenancies and short leases of less than seven years. If it applies, Section 11 essentially imposes a statutory obligation on the landlord to keep in repair the structure, exterior and installations for the supply of Vanilla October/November 2015
REAL LIVES essential services. You will need to establish what is causing the damp. If you can prove that the damp has been caused due to damage to the structure or exterior of the property, your landlord will be responsible for repairing the defect. Put your request for repairs to your landlord in writing (keeping a copy for your records) and give a reasonable deadline by which you expect the repairs to be carried out.
We are here to help... For further advice on this issue please contact the dispute resolution team at Steeles Law. Our specialists, Tom Bailey, Adam Blenkinsop and Denise Traube are on hand to help.
I
F YOUR LANDLORD refuses or delays the repairs unreasonably, contact the Environmental Health department at your local authority. If your landlord is a social landlord, such as a housing association, or is a private landlord, then the local authority may be able to force them to take action. If you are a tenant of the local authority itself, then you can make a complaint using the authority’s complaints procedure. If your landlord still fails to carry out the work, you can issue legal proceedings. The court may make an order for your landlord to carry out the repairs and/or you may be entitled to compensation. Do not simply withhold your rent, as this is a breach of contract. Your landlord could take legal action against you for rent arrears and you could potentially lose your home. For further advice on these, or any other landlord or tenant issues, please contact Steeles Law’s dispute resolution team.

AST MONTH Vanilla was invited to experience, first hand, one of Potter’s Resort’s ‘breaks’. They operate all different styles of breaks: Weekend with Friends, family breaks and Midweek Leisure breaks throughout the year. Our special treat promised a ‘Night of Unlimited Love’ (now there’s an invitation!) – a night serenaded by soul ballads from the world-class Syd Lawrence Orchestra, a five course dinner with wine, overnight accommodation in a Premier room, use of leisure facilities, a midnight dish and breakfast were all included. We pulled up to the resort entrance after just under an hour’s drive, intrigued as to what the night would entail. After our quick and friendly check-in we found our lovely, spacious room in the hotel and decided to unpack quickly and go and catch the last of the afternoon sun and some sea air. The Potters grounds extend right to the cliff edge at Hopton-on-Sea, just south of Great Yarmouth. As we walked along the beach looking back we realised just what an impressive and immaculate resort it is. The leisure facilities are countless; from pool to health club; bowling to badminton, crazy golf and

amusements, to name just a few. Back to the room and we got our glad rags on and made our way down to one of the bars for an aperitif before taking our seats for the five course dinner. The service everywhere was courteous and efficient, amazing considering the numbers of people to serve. Our evening was a sell-out and that meant 800 for dinner. Time for the entertainment – I couldn’t wait! We moved effortlessly from restaurant to theatre, it was like being on a cruise ship. I could hardly believe the size of the auditorium – as big as any regional theatre and the entertainment that followed was of West End standard. The Syd Lawrence Orchestra were excellent
and clearly playing to a devoted audience. And how nice to have a dance floor in constant use. There were definitely some Strictly contenders there that night! We ambled back to our room, looking forward to some hotel luxury and a good night’s sleep, but instead we found ourselves having an impromptu game of tenpin bowling with some other nice folk. Now where else can you do that at midnight? Our verdict? It’s a fantastic night of fun – particulary good for a group of friends, with or without children – can highly recommend. REVIEW: LAURA HALL

Full climate control will look after the heating (and cooling if we encounter summer!). There is a lockable glove box and storage in the doors; the rear door pockets a welcome touch. Of course cup holders are evident but there are also clever storage trays in the centre console and one under the rear seat. MART made its name with the tiny city car, ForTwo, a parkanywhere, nippy two-seater. The family resemblance is marked in the ForFour although it is obviously bigger to accommodate the extra rear seats. The two-tone body colouring is the most striking family trait. And the two-tone theme runs through into the interior giving a fresh, modern, fun feel. With the increase in size comes a more muscular look. Underneath the exterior panels is an exceptionally strong safety cage to protect the occupants in the event of a collision with five air bags as part of the package. Another useful safety feature is the hill start assist, helping to stop rolling back into the car behind when pulling away on a hill. There’s plenty more features, too many to list, even something to help keep the car in a straight line during crosswinds! Clearly safety is a high priority from the manufacturers. But from

By folding not only one of the rear seats but also the front passenger seat down flat an extraordinarily long package can be accommodated! Without getting too technical, the engine is fitted at the back driving the rear wheels. Why is this important? Well, this does contribute to a fun driving style but where it really scores in freeing up the front wheels to concentrate on steering alone. What this means is that the ForFour can “turn on a sixpence”! And this is just what is needed for city driving – agile and manoeuvrable with short overhanging body, all in all, easy to park and live with. ■ www.smartofnorwich.co.uk

DAY’S RACING is a thrilling treat for everyone – and there is no better place to experience the thundering of hooves, the roar of the crowd and heart-stopping excitement than at Fakenham Racecourse. It may be the sport of kings, but racing at Fakenham is a friendly, casual affair, with a relaxed atmosphere and no formal dress code. It is also one of the few courses that allows visitors to bring dogs, so everyone in the family is welcome! As the only jump racing course in Norfolk, Fakenham officially opens the new jump season with six races on Friday 16 October. Regular visitors will notice some
46
big changes, because the racecourse has been busy this summer making major refurbishments for the season ahead. “We always strive to look after everyone who comes here – the trainers, owners, jockeys and racegoers. Giving a better service is a priority, so we have made a big investment in improving our facilities,” says marketing executive Dalia Courridge. “There is a new glass-fronted facility for jockeys, adjoining the grandstand, so racegoers can see them weighing in and out. We are also opening the brand new Cool Roxy Bar, exclusively for owners and trainers. “We have brought in a completely new catering team, provided by The Crown Inn, at East Rudham. They have taken over the corporate hospitality at the Firth Restaurant at the Prince of Wales stand along with the
management at the most popular public bar – the Long Bar. Expect new local ales and beers to be introduced as part of the change over. The Long Bar itself has also been renovated and modernised and the racecourse are currently reviewing plans to make superfast wifi available to the public.” Dalia adds: “A new website is also in the pipeline for later in the year. This will include an easy-touse booking system and special offers for those booking online. “We are very excited about the improvements, and looking forward to welcoming everyone on 16 October.” So why not take a look at Fakenham Racecourse for yourself? It may be Autumn, but don’t let the weather deter you, just wrap up warm. It’s a fantastic, affordable day out for all the family – don’t forget under17s get in free. V PROFILE
MAX GIAMMELLO A unique style and flair
Max Giammello is one of the premier stylists in East Anglia today. We took some time to catch up with this diminutive Sicilian with the big charisma to find out some of the secrets of his success.
PHOTOGRAPHY: SYLVAINE POITAU
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER?
I have always wanted to be creative and when you’re a hairdresser you have the chance to use your talent to change people’s lives. Hairdressing has always been my family business. My father Toni is a barber, so it was a natural progression for me to start working in this profession. WHO IS YOUR HAIRSTYLING HERO OR HEROINE?
My personal hero is the man who taught me how to style, Gioachino. He was an amazing hairdresser who taught me at college in Sicily when I was still
50
in my teens. At one point I couldn’t master a particular style and was ready to give up hairdressing, so I took three days off school. My friends said Gioachino had been asking about me, so I went to see him. He slapped me in the face and asked me “just because you can’t do one hairstyle, you’re going to give up?” this may sound harsh, but it actually gave me the passion to work through my difficulties. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN RUNNING YOUR OWN SALON?
Looking back the biggest challenge was overcoming my personal limiting beliefs. You can check the money in your pocket and ask if you have what it takes to succeed. Overcoming that doubt is a massive step and the only way to conquer this is to simply move forward and do what
DO YOU HAVE YOU OWN HAIR-CARE ROUTINE?
Well obviously I have no hair, but this doesn’t stop me looking pristine for the customers and myself. I simply use the same shaving cut all over my face and beard for everything, just not my eyebrows. I shower twice a day, use face cream. It’s important for me to keep looking good. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR SALON?
It’s a very modern and comfortable salon. We have massage chairs and a good customer flow throughout the layout. This is now my third salon so I’ve been able to create an excellent experience and it’s that feeling that people get when coming and getting a Max Giammello style that sets us apart from our competition. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A STYLIST?
I love the fact that there are new looks coming out all the time, and because there are so many different trends you have to be on top of your game. If a customer wants a style, you simply have to Vanilla October/November 2015
BEAUTY
know what they want; you cannot afford to be behind the fashion. It’s this challenge and this excitement that keeps me both fresh and inspired. WHAT ARE GOING TO BE THE HOTTEST STYLES FOR 2016?
Freehand colour, in an artistic style is set to rule in 2016 – where the hair is more like a canvas. I think that with styles however it has to be the shape of the face and the nature of the hair that dictates the look. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOU CLIENTS HAPPY?
The key to keeping your customers happy is consistency. You have to do everything to the best of your ability on a daily basis. Your passion and intensity is immediately recognisable every time someone enters your salon. HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR TEAM?
This is one of the most important questions for me to answer as my team are a huge part of what makes my business such a success today. I may be the mind and driving force of the salon, but without my staff I wouldn’t be where I am today. The partnership and team I have today is the best it’s ever been. I now understand how to choose the right people and give them challenges to reach the next stage of their careers. By understanding their personal desires, I can help my stylists and workers achieve what they want out of life alongside their professional goals. ANY LAST WORDS?
I would like to give a special mention to Simona who has recently achieved the highest level of colour qualification in the UK. She’s been training hard in London to gain this professional standard and I’m pleased to say that at Max Giammello we can now offer clients outstanding colour that’s right every time. FACING YOUR FEARS SARAH BUCKLEY AT ATLAS COSMETIC MEDICINE
Sarah Buckley of Atlas Cosmetic Medicine, understands the fears that many women have when considering whether to undergo an aesthetic treatment. Sarah, a prescribing nurse, has been undertaking facial treatments for over eight years, and finds that the biggest fear her clients have when they first come and see her, is that treatment will result in them looking peculiar or odd – just ‘not right’, or just not themselves. Many may have seen the results of extreme make-overs or botched procedures on TV, and they certainly don’t want to look like that… Sarah’s philosophy is that a series of small treatments can, over time, result in a fresher and more youthful appearance. Sarah will consider her client’s whole face and skin condition, then design a bespoke treatment package to suit the needs and budget of each client. This may be just a single treatment, or a series of treatments undertaken over some months. Your treatment programme can include any or all the elements of facial rejuvenation – Sarah will design a treatment programme to suit your needs. Sarah has found that Mothers of the Bride particularly appreciate being able to look forward to a fresher version of themselves for the big day being planned some months ahead. If you feel that ‘you don’t know where to start’, then have a consultation with Sarah. You can relax over a coffee and discuss which treatment options are best for you. You will leave with plenty of information and can take your time to consider your options. Flexible payments plans are available so that your costs can be spread, if you wish. Atlas Cosmetic Medicine are specialists in: Facial thread veins & skin tags, Peels, Dermal fillers, Collagen stimulation, Cheek augmentation Botox, HydraFacial treatments. Completely relaxed on the treatment bed, she talked me through each of the HydraFacial’s seven steps beginning with a detox comprising lymphatic drainage to increase the blood flow and eliminate toxins. This was followed by some gentle cleansing and exfoliation to remove the dead skins cells before a brightening agent of glycolic and salicylic solution is applied to loosen debris from the skin’s pores. Next a light acid concoction mixed with honey to remove impurities like blackheads from the skin is applied, before it is then plumped up with the application of the DermaBuilder aimed at visibly improving the appearance of the skin. The final two steps are hydration and rejuvenation using red and infrared LED light to reduce redness and stimulate collagen. THE RESULT
I didn’t feel any discomfort whatsoever throughout the treatment and just a very slight tingling sensation when the light chemical acid was applied. The result, as Sarah had promised, was immediately obvious. My skin felt much softer, looked loads fresher and smelled divine as I floated out of the centre promising to return very soon. WE LOVE THESE RESULTS!
New heel treatment at Spruce House spells the end to cracked, dry skin... Spruce House have just introduced a new South African brand called MediHeel. MediHeel has transformed the way pedicures are carried out. For decades pedicures have followed the same routine, now MediHeel has reviewed the traditional methods and developed a new system which guarantees longer lasting and better results for clients. During a MediHeel pedicure there is no filing or blading, instead a callous remover tonic is applied. It is a keratolytic chemical which means that it only concentrates on the dead skin cells. The callous remover tonic works only on the outer layer of the heel and softens the skin making it easier to scrape off. Then a neutraliser is used on the foot to return the skin back to its natural PH level.
Claire from Spruce House says: “Nearly most of our clients have pedicures regularly as Olivia and I encourage our clients to look after their feet throughout the year, not just in the summertime – hopefully this will save them from needing to visit the chiropodist later in life”. VANILLA READER OFFER Book a Medi-Ped and receive a hand treatment FREE. Call 01603 627527 and quote ‘Vanilla Medi-Ped Offer’. Pedis cost £26, or £35 with gel finish.

Dentist Ross Campbell with his clinical team (l to r) Charlie, Pip, Nicola and Lindsey
Acupuncture & dentistry Norwich dentist Ross Campbell uses a hands-on approach to ease patient anxiety Feelings of stress and anxiety about going to the dentist are very common. For many it can be so severe that they won’t go at all, and this can obviously have a very serious impact on dental and general health. But one of the most significant aspects of anxiety at the dentist is an over-sensitive gag reflex, which can make treatment upsetting and very uncomfortable.
Ross Campbell, who runs a small private dental practice in Norwich, is passionate about ensuring that his patients are
56
happy in his care, and he has been very proactive in finding solutions for patients for whom the gag reflex is a major issue. Ross says: “The gag reflex is involuntary and the body’s natural defence against choking. But for sufferers this reflex is over-exaggerated and means they have trouble swallowing pills, cleaning their teeth, and of course having dental treatment makes them gag and feel nauseous.” “There are many methods we use to help ease the gag reflex. The technology we have at the
surgery enables us to take x-rays from outside the mouth and we use a scanner to take a digital impression, so no trays of putty! But probably the most effective method we use is acupuncture. We have been working with a very skilled acupuncturist, Rebecca Geanty, for the past three years, and she has completely transformed the dental experience for a number of patients with very sensitive gag reflex, making it possible for them to relax and receive treatment.” “It really is a very powerful method of controlling the gag

reflex, as well as alleviating anxiety, and it is quite remarkable to see it working. It should be a much more common practice in medical and clinical settings.” Rebecca Geanty says: “Acupuncture can be used very effectively during dental treatment to relieve anxiety and pain, and control the gag reflex. Before their dental appointment, Ross’ patients come to me so I can check they are suitable for acupuncture and start an anti-anxiety treatment, using needles on hands, lower leg and face. I will also be there during their dental appointment, using a combination of treatments to keep them calm and relaxed throughout. It isn’t painful at all, and the patient will feel the benefit afterwards, and see real long-term improvement.” “Ross has a very forwardthinking approach to his patient wellbeing and care,” adds Rebecca. “I don’t know of any
other dentists in Norwich who offer this kind of service, but there is a real need for it.”
B
ILL James-Allison, a longstanding patient of Ross Campbell, used to be a severe sufferer of over-sensitive gag reflex. “It was very bad, I had no control over it, and once I started gagging in the chair there was nothing I could do to stop it. The problem came to a head three years ago when I needed to have a wisdom tooth taken out. Ross and I discussed some options, and he suggested acupuncture might help.” “I admit that I was very sceptical indeed and didn’t think it would work, but I was willing to try anything. It was immediately very successful and I did a test run with a teeth cleaning before the big extraction. I didn’t gag at all – so I was able to have the tooth removed and it was a complete revaluation to me to
experience that with no gagging.” “To say it has transformed my life is an understatement. I used to have two dental treatments a year with acupuncture, but now I have improved so much that I only need the acupuncture for major dental work – smaller things like fillings are fine. I can even clean my teeth now without gagging, which was never possible before. I would highly recommend acupuncture to anyone with a sensitive gag reflex, or who feels anxious at the dentist.” Ross Campbell adds: “We are delighted that we are able to offer our patients some real and effective relief from these problems. Acupuncture has become a hugely valuable part of the treatment we offer our patients.” n For more information go to rosscampbell.co.uk or norwichacupuncturerooms.co.uk

Lighting is the soul of every space and is very often overlooked. Imagine being able to transform the mood of a room or space just by using good lighting, whether you are entertaining guests, relaxing in front of the television or having that important meeting. Changing the lighting can alter the way a room looks, particularly the dimensions, here are some tips to make your room appear larger, taller or just that little bit more cosy.

ET ROOMS are becoming more and more in vogue, and they’re a great way to add value to your home. Whatever your style and budget, there are a huge range of options to think about. So, can anyone have a wet room? In theory, yes. A wet room is basically a shower room that does
October/November 2015 Vanilla
WATER DRAINAGE
Installing a wet room is a job for the professionals as a gradient needs to be created along the floor to channel the shower water into a drain and then the entire room needs to be tanked (waterproofed). The most common method for creating a gradient is to install a sub-floor made from a type of plywood, which is then tiled over. Another option is to install a ready-made sloping shower former (a bit like a giant shower tray), which is also then tiled over.

WATERPROOFING
Waterproofing the wet room involves priming the floor, the lower section of the walls and the whole of the wall area around the shower and then covering with a syrupy membrane. Once it’s set, the room is then tiled. It’s also worth raising the bathroom door threshold by about 5mm from the floor in case the room fills with water (if someone covers the shower drain with a towel, for example). This will keep the water contained. Make sure windows have waterproof solutions too. Shutters can be ideal, but make sure they are specified for wet rooms.
ADVANTAGES OF A WET ROOM
● A wet room is super-stylish and perfect for creating a contemporary look. ● As a second bathroom, a wet room can easily increase the value of your home. ● Great for small bathrooms - removing the bath creates loads more space. ● Wet rooms are, in general, easier to clean. ● There’s no shower screen or tray to worry about and if you go for a wall-hung sink and toilet, it's easier still. ● If it’s done properly, your floor (the bit under the tiles) is better protected than it would be in a standard bathroom. WHAT WILL IT COST?
The cost of installing a wet room is usually between £5,000 and £10,000. If you are paying a company to tank and install the wet room, including floor-toceiling tiles, suite and shower, expect to pay more.

ARVEYS PURE MEAT proudly boasts on its website that it is the best organic butcher in East Anglia for the simple reason it is true. The butcher’s shop, on Grove Road, Norwich, which sells locally produced lamb, beef and pork along with free-range chicken and seasonal game, was established in 1924 and today is the only fully accredited certified organic butcher operating in the region. Owner Nigel Harvey has successfully steered the family business and won it a reputation for not only delivering first-class meats and game to customers, but also being able to assure them of exactly where those foods come from. THE TAMARIND TREE New Thai restaurant in the heart of Norwich
F YOU CRAVE delicious, authentic Thai food, and great service with a smile, then take your tastebuds to The Tamarind Tree Norwich’s newest Thai restaurant, which opened its doors in September. Situated on All Saints Street, it is owned by Peerada Morgan Johnson, who also runs the Thai Herbal Retreat Spa opposite. The two businesses are run very much with the same attitude. “We want everyone who comes to the spa and the restaurant to feel the same – at home, relaxed, happy and very well looked after,”
72
explains Peerada. “Our aim is to offer our customers a very high standard at all times.” The idea for The Tamarind Tree first took shape for Peerada because her customers at the spa often asked her where they could find good Thai food in Norwich. “So I thought, why not give them authentic Thai food ourselves – because there is clearly a need?” she says. “The businesses complement each other, and customers using the spa can go to the restaurant before or after their treatment for a snack or meal, and make it a
total Thai experience.” The food in The Tamarind is original and authentic Thai in every way – and very reasonably priced. Dishes for lunch start from just £5.95, and diners can choose chicken, pork, beef, tofu or king prawn and the style in which they want it cooked. There are 12 styles – everything and more you’d expect from a traditional Thai menu, with favourites such as red and green curry, crispy belly pork and the famous pad Thai. All dishes are served with jasmine rice. Behind the scenes in the Vanilla October/November 2015

kitchen, these delicious and fragrant dishes are created by head chef Namchai and his team. He has been cooking Thai food all his life. “I am passionate about the food of my native country and bringing its subtle, authentic flavours to Norwich.” he says. With its central location, The Tamarind Tree is ideally placed for both shoppers and business people looking for a great place for lunch – and perfect for the dinner crowd too. It can seat 70 downstairs, and Peerada is busy refurbishing an 80-seater October/November 2015 Vanilla
restaurant upstairs which can be booked for private functions. The decor is fresh, subtle and traditionally Thai, its design created by Peerada’s husband, Bradley, who is an artist. “Bradley created the look and feel we wanted, from the colour scheme to the floor tiles and the art on the walls. As an artist he has a very good eye,” she says. The team at The Tamarind Tree are certainly hard workers and the restaurant is open seven days a week – 12-3pm for lunch and 6-10.30pm in the evenings (5.30pm Thurs-Sat). Diners who
prefer to eat at home can pop in and pick up a takeaway. This fresh and exotic experience is not to be missed. A real taste of Thailand in the heart of the city.

ESTLED IN THE HEART OF the countryside, The Norfolk Mead Hotel is a rather grand building on the banks of the river Bure. Owners Anna Duttson and James Holliday worked in hospitality for McLaren on the Formula 1 circuit before the couple realised a dream to own their own hotel with The Norfolk Mead. We were royally greeted by Jarda, one of the managers, who showed us into the lounge for an aperitif. The interiors are modern and very comfortable, the atmosphere welcoming. We were served a Prosecco Valdobbiadene Brut Jeio Bisol, with olives and wonderful cheese straws to nibble. Jarda later showed us into the dining room, where guests were clearly having a good time and happily swapping notes about their meals, and led us to a delightful window seat. The menu is super and not your usual fare, with five choices in each section. It was honestly difficult to
choose, everything was so appealing. To begin I opted for crispy pressed ham hock with pickled vegetables, piccalilli puree, French mustard and mustard seed... Mmm, it’s making my mouth water as I write. S had pan-seared scallops, sweetcorn and scallop chowder samphire with bacon foam. Every mouthful was savoured, it was a wonderful starter. S said: “I have a friend who always wishes they’d ordered what I did – tonight it was my turn!” I drank a really good Italian Pinot Grigio blush La Maglia, S sipped a San Abello Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. For the main course, I ordered the belly pork which I can never resist. It was braised with a red cabbage veloute, served with mustard mash and an amazing selection of wild mushrooms… mouthwateringly fabulous food. menu. The champagne ice was perfect. Later we did something we never do (keeps you awake and all that) and had coffee, accompanied by a mouthful of Anna’s sumptuous chocolate brownie. Too much, too much, but rude not to. A very special evening with exquisite food, I can’t wait to find an occasion to return with all my friends. Send Jarda to the Palace where he would give them a run for their money… but only if room for two more! REVIEW: THERESA EAGLE

CÔTES DU RHÔNE EST-OUEST 2012 – ANDRÉ BRUNEL £9.75 a bottle from the Library restaurant
he first hint of a chill in the air and my taste is slowly beginning to favour red wines over whites and rosés. I’ve begun to formulate my list of favourite winter warmers, influenced largely by the bounty of the harvest. So what will I be drinking over the next few months? Côtes du Rhône, earthy Italian reds from Piedmont, the famous Sangiovese from Tuscany and maybe a dark, seductive Primitivo from southern Italy. With some difficulty I have chosen this lovely velvety Côtes du Rhône from André Brunel Est-Ouest 2012, made traditionally but with a modern twist. André and his son Fabrice have vineyards just outside Orange in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region. With the vines’ average age of over 40 years, this is quality but easy-drinking wine made for hearty meals eaten by the fire. This Côtes du Rhône does not disappoint, a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Spicy with very juicy, ripe fruit. The wine has a good structure, ripe tannins, balanced acidity and shows the true character of the Rhône.

Yes Chef! Head chef, John Kendrick of the The Library Bar & Grill, marries the creamy mellow flavour of cauliflower and the sweetness of scallops.
Scallops with cauliflower purée and sautéd English black pudding SERVES 4 12 king scallops (out of shell) ½ head cauliflower 200ml double cream 200ml water 200g English black pudding, cubed 100g butter
76
1 Break the cauliflower into florets. In a pan add the cream, water and cauliflower and slowly bring to boil. Reduce heat to cook gently untill the cauliflower is tender. 2 Strain, taking care to keep hold of cooking liquid. Put back into pan and reduce the liquid by half. 3 Blend cauliflower with a hand blender, then season with salt and pepper to taste. 4 In a frying pan, lightly sauté the cubed black pudding – once hot remove with slotted spoon. Keep pan with cooking juices and add scallops (you may need to add a little more butter). Cook
one side for 1 minute until lightly golden, turn and lightly spoon over the butter, add a squeeze of fresh lemon. Cook for approx 40 seconds then take out of pan and allow to rest for 1 minute. 5 Assemble the dish: spoon cauliflower puree onto hot plates, top with scallops (3 per person) then gently top with cubes of black pudding and a few micro herbs. Serve immediately.

T MUST BE the longestrunning party in Norwich. For over 30 years, Pedro's has offered diners an authentic taste of the exotic in a setting where you always feel like you're on holiday, where eating great food is also great fun. As soon as you arrive, you get the impression the party's in full swing. Staff are genuinely pleased to see you, the folk art and Wild West decor are as if you’ve stepped on the set of a Sergio Leone movie, and you’ll be wearing a sombrero within minutes. Our own party got started with Pedro’s cocktails, although the restaurant’s 11 beers deserve a mention for being faithful to its personality, from the staple San Miguel to tequila-flavoured Desperados.
78
If you thought Pedro’s was all about chilli peppers and hot sauces, you will be pleasantly surprised that it takes its TexMex credentials seriously. This is a cuisine characterised by its fabulous combinations of beans, vegetables, shredded meats (particularly beef and pork), cheeses and flour-based wraps. ‘Taste of Texas’ offers great steaks, baby back ribs, marvellous salads (chorizo and avocado, anyone?), burgers and classic Pedro's Stacks. If you like hot and spicy, there's plenty to choose from, but if you prefer something easier on the palate you won't be disappointed. To start, we shared nachos (with guacamole, sour cream, chilli, melted cheese) and a signature dish – stuffed jalapeno peppers in batter, packed with flavour. For my main course, I ordered the Big Mushroom Mountain – an aptly-named assortment of houmous, halloumi, sauteed potatoes and flat mushrooms griddled for a wonderful smoky taste, all assembled in a toasted
N
EITHER of us could fault the food – it looked lovely and tasted wonderful. Sadly, though, the more-thangenerous portions meant we could only share a dessert. The Banana Chimichanga – the fruit wrapped in a tortilla and deep fried, drizzled with maple syrup and cream – was a fittingly tasty end to our meal, washed down with another two wonderful cocktails, a Strawberry Frozen Margarita and Singapore Sling. The restaurant does takeaways, collection-only with 10% off. But Pedro’s has plenty you can’t take away – a holiday atmosphere, happy staff, irresistible sombreros. Oh, and those incredible cocktails. ■ REVIEW: NICKY SECKER-BLIGH

’VE DRIVEN past the sign to Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden a million times as it’s very much “my manor” and never really took any notice – but that all changed when I ventured along for afternoon tea. After a wonderful welcome to this jolly and busy little place from the “Fairhaven family” – Di, Tracey, Ronnie, Suzanne and manager Louise –we sat down to an absolutely lovely treat. It included everything one would expect from afternoon tea, and some, lovingly prepared by the “family” who all seem to have their own culinary strengths. There is a selection of beverages but we settled for Earl Grey tea which was particularly good. I don’t think I’ve ever quaffed so much in one sitting. Fresher-than-fresh sandwiches included egg mayonnaise (a particular favourite of mine), ham and tomato, and a stonking Brie and cranberry, all on granary and
80
white breads. There were also cheese straws (another absolute favourite, forever compared to my Auntie May’s) and sausage rolls with delicious meat. Baked daily are gorgeous little scones, cheese and plain. They like you to book to ensure daily freshness, and they cater for all dietary requirements so if you reserve a table they are prepared. The cake selection is super too. Our plate held a lemon drizzle, a very naughty rich chocolate cake and my favourite, the date crumble, fabulous! Not recommended for anyone even vaguely trying to diet.
A
FTERNOON tea hasn’t really been up there for me as one of my pleasures, but the experience at Fairhaven changed all that. The place has been going for 40 years, the present building since 2008. It seats 35 to 40 inside with a further 60 al fresco at the front and back. And dogs are welcome, only if they are well behaved, of course. Fairhaven boasts a woodland walk within the 131 acres in the heart of magical Norfolk
waterland. There are boat trips – one vessel is wheelchair accessible – and the countryside is truly stunning. They are open 364 days a year and an events calendar has something for most tastes, canoe trails, jazz, dog days and photography to name a few. Well, having driven past for years, it won’t be long before I’m back at Fairhaven (with visitors you never know what to do with!), not least of course for the date crumble. REVIEW: THERESA EAGLE

ERHAPS, LIKE THE perfect Burgundy, The Last Wine Bar has been aged to perfection. Boasting a 25-year vintage, the restaurant is very proud to be celebrating a quarter century of warm hospitality, fresh classic food and quality wine. It would be rude not to raise a glass to this successful indie eatery and so it was that myself and a friend stopped by for the full dinner experience. Housed in an old Victorian shoe factory, the most asked question of the staff isn’t ‘May I have the bill’ but ‘Why are you called The Last Wine Bar?’ Lasts are foot-shaped moulds used to make shoes and in homage to the building’s former role, the restaurant takes its name. The bar area is an atmospheric space with bare brick and an historic feel, perfect for a pre-dinner drink. You can eat there or, as we did,

in the more formal dining areas adjacent and downstairs. There are huge windows, a lovely airy feel and over a hundred wines to enjoy! Brilliantly, you can order from both the bar and a la carte menus. Our friendly waitress introduced the plat du jour and served fresh bread, balsamic and local rapeseed oil while we went to town on a pick-and-mix feast from each side of the menu. To start, crispy haloumi, button mushrooms, cashew nuts and chilli sauce for Max, and pea and mint open ravioli for me. In my entire two years living in Cyprus, haloumi never tasted so good, and the pea ravioli had that super wholesome taste that only comes from the freshest ingredients. Ecky Limon is one of the owners of the Last and with his French heritage, a charming and knowledgeable host. He
recommended Max try the pork saltimbocca and herb polenta with a stunning glass of viognier. Ecky explained that saltimbocca means “jumps in the mouth” before leaving Max to enjoy the layered flavours and textures of this traditional Italian dish. I’d sacrificed the last few mouthfuls of delicious pestocrusted salmon and new potatoes in order to enjoy dessert. Max got lost in her lemon meringue pie, “you could float away on it, the meringue is so light”. While I savoured the vanilla and caramel of a creme brulee and a side of crisp shortbread. Very, very nice indeed! REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

Yes Chef! Classic pasta Amatriciana From Pinocchio’s head chef and co-owner Andrea Vilia, a classic southern Italian dish made with just five ingredients – just use the best tomatoes and bacon you can find. SERVES 5-6
2kg tomatoes – cherry, plum or ordinary – roughly chopped 250g smoked bacon, cut into strips, or cubetti di pancetta 2 small red chillies 500g bag fresh pasta 200g pecorino, grated
1 Put the tomatoes into a food processor in batches and whizz to a fine pulp. Sieve into a large pan, in batches again, pressing through as much tomato as you can with a wooden spoon. Simmer for 20-30 mins until the sauce has reduced

by a third to about 700ml. 2 This homemade passata can now be frozen. 3 Put the bacon or pancetta into a cold, large, heavy-based frying pan. Place over a medium heat – the fat will slowly melt and the bacon will cook. Add the whole chillies (don’t worry, they come out at the end) and cook for 8-10 mins with the bacon until the bacon is sizzling and golden all over. Stir in the tomato sauce, bring to the boil
and simmer for 4-5 mins.
4 Meanwhile, cook the pasta, then drain well. While still hot, tip it into the sauce, sprinkle with most of the cheese and stir well. Remove the whole chillies, dish the pasta onto plates and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Pinocchio’s Restaurant: 11 St Benedicts St, Norwich NR2 4PE Tel: 01603 613318 www.pinocchiosnorwich.co.uk

Stefan Gurney Executive Director of Norwich BID
My City Life Stefan Gurney, Executive Director of Norwich BID (Business Improvement District) lives in Thorpe Hamlet with his wife Alison and daughters Adara and Isis.
Stefan, you were born and bred in Norwich, then lived in London for 10 years. What tempted you back here in 2000? The quality of life in Norwich was a big draw for me. I enjoyed London, but I had a very hectic lifestyle and I didn’t want to raise a family there. Norwich offers the best of both worlds; all the facilities of a major city, but in a more compact and friendly environment. For me, it was about coming home and giving something back to the place that helped shape who I am.
What do you think that Norwich has that is unique to other cities and what makes you love Norwich so much? Norwich has everything, whatever you’re into – music, theatre, art, film, great shops, history, superb food – it’s all here. There is always something interesting to do and it has a personality of its own.
We’re halfway through a £3m plan to revitalise the city centre. Briefly, what more is in store from Norwich BID? Before Christmas we will unveil free WiFi in the city centre, and we are now working on other
projects, such as a range of murals in the centre, and wayfinding and signage. There is also a high-level project in planning that will put Norwich on the international stage.
Until fairly recently, Norwich was listed in the UK’s top ten shopping destinations, but has now slipped to No.13. Can it get back to where it was? Norwich has always punched above its weight in terms of retail and does very well, considering its size in comparison with other UK cities, such as Liverpool and Newcastle, which have a larger demographic. We have to bear in mind that many other cities are also investing heavily in retail development, but we are working hard to re-establish Norwich in that top echelon – and this includes positioning London Street as a national boutique retail area.
What’s best about your job? The variety of challenges I face. One day I could be looking at WiFi for the city, the next I’ll be involved with GoGoDragons, and the day after it might be apps or accessibility of transport. There are so many things that help shape the city and it’s very fulfilling to be involved in every aspect.
What are your hidden gems in Norwich? The Cathedral is a very special place for me, because I went to school, got married, and had my children christened there. For fantastic food, Bishop’s is a lovely, intimate boutique restaurant, and you’ll sometimes find me in Bedfords having a relaxing pint. Philip Browne on Guildhall Hill is great for top, trend-setting fashions. There are so many gems in the city that it’s difficult to select a small handful!
