F YOU’VE not yet discovered the peace and beauty of hearing the birds wake and sing at first light during a Dawn Chorus Walk in the stunning Norfolk landscape, now is your chance. Big C has paired up with Pensthorpe Natural Park in Wensum Valley, near Fakenham and RSPB Strumpshaw Fen, to offer this experience on Sunday April 17th and Sunday May 8th. You’ll need to set your alarm to be up before the birds, but will be rewarded by a unique experience, no two sunrises or dawn choruses are the same. Hot drinks enroute and at Strumpshaw a breakfast bag is included in the ticket price. For full details and to book tickets visit www.big-c.co.uk/events/dawn-chorus

newsonthestreet ....and on the Norwich Grapevine A VIP NIGHT OF STYLE

Taking over Robinsons Mercedes-Benz retailers across East Anglia, catwalk style reigned supreme in celebration of the C-Class Coupe launch. Welcoming the event to Mercedes-Benz of Norwich in February, guests gathered around the black carpeted runway, awaiting an exciting display from local independent retailers and high street moguls. Working in collaboration with Norwich Fashion Week, the event saw over

250 guests visit the Barker Street showroom, as sneak previews of this year’s fashions were revealed. As the catwalk event came to an end,

two stunning models unveiled the all-new C-Class Coupe as Sales Executive Seb Fisher thanked all for their attendance.

SAHARA NORWICH

After much anticipation, a sister store to London boutique, Sahara, will be opening on Orford Hill in Norwich early April! Sahara is renowned for “a unique, bohemian chic aesthetic that has evolved out of endless travels around the world in search of new experiences and ideas.” Sahara make clothes for the individual, not the crowd. Their clothes are designed to feel luxurious and flatter the figure as part a timeless wardrobe that can be expanded and adapted each season. BENUGO IN JOHN LEWIS

LOVESPOONS JEWELLERY Following on from our feature in our February issue, we’ve been seeing even more of Cat Nash’s intriguing Lovespoons jewellery. She’s ’s popped up at the Norwich Antique's Fair but you can also catch her at the Norwich Maker’s Market Spring Fair on 2nd April at St Thomas’ Church Hall in Earlham Road, along with many other designers, makers, artists and a Pop Up Café. www.facebook.com/norwichmakersmarket

Sixth annual Norwich Fashion Week features ‘best shows to date’

The Vintage Show

Mercedes-Benz of Norwich Retailers Show

The Designers Show

Norwich Fashion Week 2016 has been described as the ‘best yet’ by the hard-working volunteers behind this inspirational, annual event, designed to celebrate and promote the vibrant fashion scene in the city.

This year all the NFW core shows took place at OPEN, as the new official home of the city’s biggest annual fashion event and many of the events were sell-outs. Kerry Curl, one of the directors of Norwich Fashion Week, said: “NFW16 has featured some really strong looks and some of the best shows to date. The diversity of fashion in Norwich has really been brought to life with a combination of wearable looks and catwalk inspiration to help the fashion-forward experiment with their own individual looks. We’re proud to have had sell out shows and to have once again created a real buzz in the city.” Well done to everyone involved – here’s looking forward to NFW 2017! PHOTOGRAPHY: PAUL BAYFIELD

WHEN DID GLASSES BECOME SO COOL?

THE fashion EDIT

Fashion, perhaps an unlikely supporter of the optically challenged, has helped: spectacles starred on the Autumn/Winter 2015 catwalks at Gucci and Max Mara, while Prada and Chanel’s eyewear campaigns, starring Gemma Ward and Kristen Stewart respectively, have been well publicised. Celebrities including Emma Watson, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Aniston are spectacles-wearers; Meryl Streep, Karlie Kloss and Lupita Nyong'o have even thrown caution to the wind and frequently wear glasses to red carpet events.

#BIGCFROCKSONFRIDAY Fancy a new frock, but haven’tt got the cash for this season’s must-have look? It’s your Prom and you want to look amaaaazing but the bank of mum and dad are not stumping up the cash? All you have to do is pop into one of the 10 Big C cancer charity shops and buy a pre-loved frock. Take a “before” picture of you wearing it with the Big C label showing on it and post via facebook.com/bigccharity, twitter@ bigctweets or Instagram bigccharity including #bigcfrocksonfriday. Then take it home and upcycle it into this season’s look. Be inspired by this season’s catwalk trends - bare shoulders, frills and flounces, boho style or underwear as outerwear cute. Once you’ve upcycled, take an “after” picture and post using the same hashtag.

lana’s Boutique, an exclusive ‘By Appointment’ only shop in Sprowston, Norwich, is growing its already established client list through utilising social media and a brand new website. This stylish haven of musthave clothing and accessories specialises in sourcing top designer labels and high end high street brands, while selling them for substantially less than the recommended prices. Busy wife and mother, Lynsey Bradley-Foster launched Alana's Boutique in September 2013 and with business going from strength to strength, was shortlisted for an EDP Small

26

Business Award in 2015. “It was a huge honour to even be considered for such an accolade and I'd like to think it's because of the high level of service I offer my clients. With it being By Appointment Only, my clients book a one hour session and receive a private one-to-one service from the minute they step through the door. There's no waiting in line to be served; the whole shop is yours for the entire appointment" The boutique’s new website launched last December, enabling Lynsey to showcase hot picks including all the new arrivals. It also includes all the

latest discounts, news, events and highlights. “We use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Social media is a fabulous, free marketing tool and being online with the new website gives us greater flexibility." she said. However, bi-monthly, invitation-only events held at the shop are a huge hit with clients who enjoy a lovely evening learning all about the latest season’s trends, while enjoying drinks, nibbles and exclusive event only discounts. “We have just held a Step into Spring event which was all about pretty pastels, candy colours and getting ready for the new season." said Lynsey. “Flying off the rails at the moment is our Almost Famous leaf print twist dress, which normally retails for £85, our price only £45. Also, Hybrid’s leather look dresses in copper and gun metal, which we sell for £55 instead of the recommended £95.” Reader website offer of 15% off quoting Vanilla15 at checkout. www.alanasboutique.com

RADITIONAL creative skills such as Dressmaking, Embroidery, Knitting and Crochet are making a comeback. At the forefront of this sewing revolution is makeplace which runs over 40 different sewing and crafting classes. makeplace is a family business run by siblings Tim, Cindy, and Sally who have a wealth of sewing experience between them as well as tailoring, design and teaching. The family owns Anglian Fashion Fabrics and Anglian Furnishing Fabrics on Magdalen Street and opened makeplace nearly 7 years ago in response to demand.

“Customers were suggesting we opened a sewing school! It made perfect sense to open a workshop where we could teach sewing classes specifically aimed at complete beginners and those wanting to extend their skills. “It was around the recession and we found that people were also looking for ways to economise by making things themselves.” says Cindy.

S

o who wants to learn to make and sew these days? “Our students include all age groups from children of 9 years old to young mums, couples learning together, semi retired ladies and men eager to be the next sewing bee! As well as being great fun our classes have a serious aim – to teach people in a professional environment and to help learners

progress. We inspire, encourage and develop all abilities with new ideas and techniques” adds Sally. The in-house pattern cutting tutor Joanne teaches how to draft an individual ‘block’ during a one day session from which you can then design your own garments and obtain the perfect fit. For those who prefer a commercial pattern to follow but require some sewing guidance, makeplace will shortly be running one day sewing classes using ‘on trend’ contemporary patterns by Merchant & Mills. There are lots more exciting classes coming up for spring such as hand embroidery, Tunisian crochet and sewing a garment in jersey (stretch fabric). Thanks to pioneers like makeplace it seems that traditional crafts in Norwich are still very much alive. “Historically, Magdalen Street was the centre for many trades including weaving and shoemaking. Our vision is to continue this rich culture, to keep creativity alive and to pass on valuable skills” says Cindy. makeplace, 33 Magdalen Street, Norwich. A HOLE IN ONE FOR STYLE

Women’s golf fashion at Peter Field Golf Shop

SYLVAINE POITAU

T

HE BEST WAY to tee off in style for women hitting the golf course is to pay a visit to the region’s most fashionable golf clothing brands’ stockist, the Peter Field Golf shop. Located at the Norwich Family Golf Centre, in Dunham Road, Easton, the female clothing section allows women players to stay on-trend, both on and off the course, with top designer brands Under Amour, Daily Sports and Green Lamb. Golf professional and retailing entrepreneur, Peter Field, started trading 25 years ago selling both golfing equipment and clothing. “For many golf is a lifestyle sport and ladies can now enjoy fashion which not only reflect High Street trends, but also offer a level of comfort and practicality,” said Peter. “Green Lamb, for example, has just launched a range designed April/May 2016 Vanilla

by the catwalk model Jodie Kidd using fabrics and styles that marry up completely with High Street fashion.” And to make sure his female customers are completely on par with the latest technology available, many items combine styling with moisture-wicken fabrics preventing players from feeling hot and uncomfortable whilst playing. Peter’s successful retailing emporium expanded five years ago by moving to its much larger premises in Norwich from Swaffham Golf Club. The golfing industry is worth £3.4 billion to the UK and according to The Economic Impact of Golf on the Economy of England published in 2014 by Sports Marketing Surveys, sales of golf clothing alone generated more than £305 million. Norfolk is one of the best

counties to enjoy a round of golf boasting more than 30 golf courses and one of the best driving ranges in the country. While about only 14% of all players are female, Peter and his five-strong team are doing their bit to increase the numbers of women enjoying the sport. “We have set up a networking group called Drive giving businesswomen the chance to play golf and network at the same time. We launched about a year ago and now have 40 members,” said Peter. Peter advised that if you see a must-have outfit in his shop be sure to snap it up quickly, as increasingly manufacturers do not hold support stock, meaning that “when an item’s gone, it’s gone.” Peter Field Golf Shop, Norwich Family Golf Centre, Dunham Road, Easton, Norwich NR9 5GA www.peterfieldgolf.co.uk

“I am keen to investigate any way of preserving my income at what is a difficult time for me and my family”

Am I entitled to take paid holiday while on Sick Leave? MY QUESTION: I am currently off work on long term sick leave. A family member has suggested that I may be entitled to take paid holiday whilst off work sick but I am unsure. What would your advice be to an employee in my position – does such an entitlement apply? I am keen to investigate any way of preserving my income at what is a difficult time for me and my family, both personally and financially.

34

I

F YOU HAVE been off work due to sickness for a long time, you may not receive sick pay. If so, taking holiday during your sickness absence could be a way to temporarily increase your income. Under European law, it is your choice whether or not to take your statutory holiday entitlement during a period of sick leave. However, if you do so this may have an impact on any benefits you are receiving. You should also consider whether, once you

have returned to work, you will want to take holiday and enjoy it properly. If you decide to take holiday during sick leave, it must be booked in the normal way. Similar rules also apply if you become sick during a period of booked holiday. In this case, you can decide that you would like to take your holiday another time but you must tell your employer that you are sick as soon as possible. If you decide to take sick leave instead, you will Vanilla April/May 2016

REAL LIVES

only be paid for your sick leave entitlement. Your employer cannot force you to take holiday during your sickness absence. OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER... Can my employer refuse my request for holiday or tell me when to take leave?

Yes. If your employer has rules about booking leave set out in your contract, or in a handbook, then you should follow those rules. If not, then the statutory rules will apply. The statutory rules say that if you wish to book holiday, you should give your employer notice twice the length of time you want to take off work. You should also be aware that your employer can require that you take certain days as paid holiday by giving you the same amount of notice. Your employer might also decide that they do not want you to take holiday at a particular time. If so, your employer can refuse your request by giving you notice equal to the amount of time you want to take as holiday. For example, if the statutory rules apply and you want to take a week’s leave, you must give your employer two weeks’ advance notice. If your employer does not want you to take holiday that week, they must give you notice refusing your request at least one week before the start of your holiday. I do a lot of paid overtime, should this be taken into account when working out my holiday pay?

for the first four weeks of your holiday entitlement. Under European law, your holiday pay must be “broadly equivalent” to your normal weekly pay. Recent cases say that your employer should take account of any non-guaranteed but paid overtime when calculating your holiday pay. A common way of doing this is by working out an average of your total number of hours and pay, including overtime, over the previous 12 weeks but there are as yet no firm rules. These rules do not apply to the additional 1.6 weeks’ entitlement under UK law and your holiday

pay for this time can be based on your normal, or basic, wage if you have one. Your employer could decide, however, to pay you more (but not less) than UK law requires. It is up to your employer to decide how to pay you for any holiday entitlement over and above your statutory holiday entitlement. These rules might be set out in your contract of employment. If you think that your holiday pay has been calculated incorrectly, you should take advice quickly, as strict time limits apply if you wish to bring an employment tribunal claim. ■

ADRIAN & SHIRLEY’S STORY How good financial planning prepared them for the unexpected...

A

DRIAN AND SHIRLEY, who have lived in Hellesdon for many years, were at long last looking forward to enjoying more time together and planning the next few years of fun and travel. Adrian had decided to retire in December 2014 at age 65; Shirley was recently retired. For the first year or so, everything was as they wanted, but this was soon to change dramatically. Feeling a little off colour, Adrian took a visit to his doctor. After a few more visits and subsequent tests at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, he was diagnosed in June 2015 with advanced pancreatic cancer, with secondary spread to the liver; he commenced treatment with ‘S.I.E.G.E.’, a chemotherapy drugs trial, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Unfortunately, with pancreatic cancer, there are no real symptoms to speak of and it is often very advanced by the time it is diagnosed. This produces a very low survival rate of just 4%

38

after 12 months. To have to come to terms with this prognosis after less than a year together in retirement, both Adrian and Shirley were devastated. They had many questions, but little time to find answers. How long might they have together? How would Shirley and the boys cope? Would they have enough money?

O

BVIOUSLY, they called an immediate halt to their retirement plans. Rather than let the shock and fear create inaction, Adrian and Shirley wanted to gain some control and try to make plans as best they could. Their starting point was to contact their financial adviser of many years, Simon Kiley at RJL IFA in Eaton. Simon immediately suggested a meeting, at which they could review Adrian and Shirley’s investments and insurances and thereby assess what lump sums and incomes would be available now or on Adrian’s death. Fortunately, Simon had arranged £50,000 of

Vanilla April/May 2016

FINANCE

life cover for each of them in 2008, by way of two single-life policies. Whilst this can be marginally more expensive than a joint-life policy, the benefit is that the survivor will continue to have cover in their own name. If a successful claim is made under a joint life policy, the survivor is left with no cover, as the policy expires at that point. In this case, Shirley stood to benefit from Adrian’s £50,000 and her own £50,000 would continue to the end of the policy term.

Some questions to consider...

C

● Do you have personal or occupational

LAIMS are usually made under life policies towards the end of the policy term. In the joint-life scenario, the survivor is considerably older than when the policy was taken out, which means that any new policy will be much more expensive, if obtainable at all. This is the nature of life assurance: younger, healthier people get cheaper policies (less likely to claim); older, less healthy people get more expensive policies (more likely to claim). Another helpful aspect of the policies was ‘terminal illness benefit’, which means that the policy owner can make a claim if the life assured has less than a given period to live. Due to Adrian's prognosis being very poor (less than 12 months, as confirmed by his medical team), the £50,000 was paid to him in a matter of days. He was able to see the money put to use for Shirley and his children, which provided him with some comfort in this difficult time. Death benefits are also available with Adrian’s personal pension and Simon is discussing the options with him and the family.

A

DRIAN kindly agreed to share his story in order that families may consider the importance of adequate life and health assurance. Many of us may have taken out a policy in connection with a mortgage, or perhaps set up some cover many years ago that was based on what we could afford. Are those arrangements still suitable?

April/May 2016 Vanilla

● Do you have sufficient life cover? ● When did you last review it? ● Has anything changed, e.g. job, marriage,

children, house purchase etc? ● Is it joint life or single life? ● Under what circumstances can you claim? ● At what point does it expire? ● Do you have terminal illness benefit? ● Do you have any work-related death or

health cover? pensions that provide death benefits? If you would like to come in for a review, please contact us on 01603 499599 or simon@rjlifa.co.uk. We would appreciate it if you would let us know that you contacted us because of this story, as we will donate £50 to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, on each and every new policy that stems from it.

Please note that this article is not intended to be used as advice. If you are considering putting life or health assurance in place or adjusting the cover that you already have, please speak to us or another qualified financial adviser. This is very important, as inadequate cover exposes you and your dependants to financial risk now and in the future. Life and/or health assurance policies do not usually acquire a maturity value or a surrender value. At the end of the policy term, or if premiums cease before that date, the policy will simply expire. Availability, sums assured and cost depend largely on age, health and the type of cover.

LONG HAIR

by Phillip Bushnell, senior partner at John Olivers When you see someone with great-looking long hair, you can bet that they spend time looking after it. So what does it take to keep those lustrous, long locks in tip-top condition?

• TechnoGym® Cardio Equipment

HEALTH & FITNESS

Let’s talk about...

@norwichyoga

➊ Find a good hairdresser that you trust. They need to understand your hair, assess what it needs and give it consistent treatment.

➋ Trim every three months to take off the dry

ends. Texture can be added, but not every time. Stick with a blunt cut for regular trims.

➌ At home, choose the best products you can afford to shampoo and condition your hair. Invest in other products that add moisture, protein and volume, and heat protection. We recommend and stock the Kerastase and Redken ranges, as they are superb quality.

➍ Be gentle with your hair at all times,

especially when you dry and comb it. Never rub, tug or pull, as it can break. Use a widetoothed comb, and always work on your hair from the scalp travelling down the hair shaft. At night, put your hair in a soft scrunchy to keep it neat and in one place.

➎ Be aware of your hair type. Fine or delicate

long hair needs more body, so use heat protecting products. Coarse hair is much more absorbent and can take more product. Coloured hair is very porous, and you need to select products designed to nourish. House of Colour

Colour analysis and image consulting

ILL BUSHNELL, colour analyst and image consultant at the House of Colour, challenges people’s perceptions of colour by showing them which blend of colours are in closest harmony with their eye colour and skin and hair tones. Armed with this information, her clients can create a coordinated wardrobe and make-up, so that they look fantastic and feel confident every day. Intrigued by this fascinating process I arrived for Gill’s two-anda-half-hour consultation wearing no make-up, as requested. Gill explained the basis of the colour wheel. “The colours at the top of the wheel are warm, either Spring or Autumn, and cool at the bottom, which are Summer or Winter. Our first step is to establish whether you are a warm or cool person, then which season you are.” Gill covered my hair and clothing and draped a range of different coloured scarves around my shoulders. As she worked I could

50

see that some shades clearly brought my face to life and made my skin look brighter, while others made me look tired, drawn and pale. It was quite magical. I’m an Autumn, which means I need to wear rich warm russets, golds, earthy pinks, kingfisher blue, moss green and burnt orange. But what about my staple black, and my gorgeous hot pink heels?! “Black makes you look drawn, its too overwhelming,” explained Gill. “Rather than hot pink, you need to wear corals and salmons, which are fantastic colours for your complexion.”

A

nd then there’s red… something I never normally wear, and certainly not on my lips! “Everyone can wear red lipstick, you just need to find the right shade,” said Gill. She then began to transform my face – it was very subtle, but very powerful at the same time. She used a gorgeous tomato red for my lips. Wow, that

really popped, and made my teeth look super white! “Great for a night out or business meeting, but there are more subtle tones in your colour palette for every day,” she said. I couldn’t stop smiling. The final stage of the process was a colour rating, where Gill went through each of the colours in my palette and advised me how I should wear them – for example as a single block of colour, like a dress, or as a sweater or accent scarf. This really was a wonderful experience. Gill’s warm personality shines through and she is passionate about what she does. Each client leaves with a beautiful leather wallet of their colour swatches and a personalised booklet, so they can remeber the advice. “I am very aware of the power of colour and how it can transform people’s lives and give them confidence. Clients often get quite emotional when they see how much better they can look with the right colours. It makes me so happy as well to be able to do this for people.”

7. Bring the inside in With Spring here at last and the daffodils in bloom, our minds are turning to the outside rather than the inside. But whilst we are still waiting for those long hot days why not try and bring the garden inside by adding a dash of green into our homes.

The new Woodland Walk collection from Sanderson is the perfect remedy for those without a garden or easy access to the countryside. Imagine a wall of Sanderson Woodland Chorus in the bedroom – what a lovely way to wake up! Or how about using the fabric for a simple roman blind at the kitchen window, so even if the view isn’t inspiring at least these pretty birds and flowers will always be cheery. And any plain sofa will be enlivened by having a cushion or two in Sanderson Fern Embroidery in a zingy green and white. If you are lucky enough to have a conservatory or garden studio then the new Outdoor collection from Manuel Canovas is perfect for you. It uses all the zingy bright colours they are renowned for and combines them with big bold leafy prints and watercolour Koi carp swimming around. The fabrics are particularly great because they are totally weatherproof – you can leave them out all summer and they will be fine, or bring them in to the conservatory to get that Spring feeling all year round.

only makes your house a more enjoyable place to live, but if it is done right it is also likely to give its value a boost. Whilst well thought out, quality home improvements can boost the value of a property, botched work and bad judgement can do more harm than good. When navigating your way up the property ladder it pays to do your homework…

MAKING OVER THE GARDEN Don’t neglect outdoor space during a property spruce-up. Gardens can be a room, or several rooms, in themselves. Remember, first impressions count, so cast a critical eye over the outside of your home. Loxley Hall Garden Designs came up with this circular design of raised beds constructed in blockwork and rendered, for an inner city courtyard in need of updating. It is viewed from the house easily and so has been designed to be an extension of the conservatory, an outside room in effect.

EXTERIOR WINDOWS AND DOORS Estate agents insist that new double-glazed windows will add value and also make a home more ‘sellable’. But be warned, if your windows look cheap or out of keeping with the property, buyers are likely to start discounting the price. This Norfolk cottage (pictured) renovated by Broadland Windows, shows what a massive improvement changing the windows can make to a property. “The double glazed windows looked really old and cheap and were suffering badly from condensation,” explained the owner. “Because it’s a period property, we wanted to restore the windows to be in keeping with the feel of the house. We knew we wanted Chartwell Green with a woodgrain effect, complete with Georgian bars and period-style handles. We are planning to extend the house further and then replace the remainder of the old windows as well as the out-dated conservatory.”

Whether you extend or convert existing space, it’s tempting to add an extra bedroom. This has a satisfyingly visible effect on estate agents’ statistics. Figures released by Nationwide in 2003 showed that adding a bedroom could increase value of your home by an impressive 11%. Bathrooms can quickly look shabby and dated. A new one could set you back thousands, but it’s possible to get a decent suite for £500. Don’t feel you have to stick to the tried and tested combination of toilet, bath and shower. En-suite shower rooms and wet rooms are increasingly popular.

VEN IF you haven’t had the pleasure of dining at Brasted’s, chances are you’ve heard of it. Founded by the late John Brasted in 1984, the multi award-winning restaurant was built on his principle of “great company, fabulous food and wonderful wines, as often as possible.” It’s a premise Brasted’s has maintained for over three decades, despite moving from the centre of Norwich to the village of Framlingham Pigot (a few miles to the southeast of the city) some 10 years ago. Enter and you’re immediately struck by the first-class level of service and opulent interior − the latter thanks to a major refurbishment last year. It’s a warm welcome to a comfortable and relaxing environment that offers a discernible degree of intimacy. As we were shown to our table I couldn’t help but think the layout of the restaurant was really quite clever, giving each of the eight tables plenty of personal space and providing plenty of room for the ever-helpful (but never intrusive) waiting staff. Indeed, at times it felt as though the restaurant had opened especially for us.

It was a feeling due in no small part to the attentions of front of house manager Nigel, who looked after us with commensurate skill and perfect recommendations from Executive Chef Chris Busby’s imaginative menu – which changes every six to eight weeks. While we enjoyed some mouthwatering canapes and were treated to a delightfully tasty amuse-bouche (pomegranate and molasses seared salmon), we debated whether to choose from the a la carte menu or treat ourselves to Brasted’s recentlyintroduced 8-course taster menu. We decided on the former, and I started with a fabulous dish of seared king scallops, served with a brilliant bacon panna cotta with bacon crumb, and an exquisitely-flavoured Jerusalem artichoke purée. My friend’s starter was equally impressive, being a vibrant pea mousse with yoghurt emulsion, shaved Heritage beets and roasted fresh figs. These marvellous dishes were followed by our main courses. For me, a thoroughly beautiful fillet, cutlet and crisp belly of Orchard Farm lamb (an

Vanilla April/May 2016

extremely local source) with Macaire potatoes, woodshrooms and a stunning red currant infused sauce. My friend, meanwhile, was full of praise for her beautifully crisp and tasty roasted cauliflower with Honingham goat’s curd, a rich curried carrot puree, crispy cous cous and some wonderfully spicy raisins.

F

OR ONCE, I regretted my lack of a sweet tooth. For while I enjoyed a wellbalanced plate of house cheeses with a homemade quince jelly, my friend ended her meal (on Nigel’s faultless recommendation) with the peach parfait, chocolate cylinder, honeycomb, pistachio crumb and peach purée. Describing it as ‘incredible’ she said it was by far the best dessert she’d ever tasted – and accompanied it with a glass of Nivole Frizzante, a beautiful dessert wine of which I was allowed a small taste. Our meals really were quite amazing, displaying a level of skill and artistry I think you’d be hard pressed to find equalled anywhere else. “Brasted’s has always been about celebrating,” Managing Director Nick Mills told us as we (reluctantly) left, and we couldn’t have agreed more. In fact, next time we’ll be taking advantage of Brasted’s Lodge, which adjoins the restaurant and offers six individually-designed en suite bedrooms that won 5 AA stars only a year after opening. But why wait for a special occasion? Being treated to food of this quality and service of this standard is a cause for celebration itself.

Stoke Mill Menu Du Jour Lunch: 2 courses £17 / 3 courses £20 Dinner: 2 courses £20 / 3 courses £24 A La Carte Starters £7-£10 Mains £14-£25 OPENING HOURS

Wednesday-Saturday Noon-2.30pm 7-9.30pm (10pm Sat) Sunday 12-3pm Stoke Mill, Mill Rd, Stoke Holy Cross, Norwich NR14 8PA Tel: 01508 493337 www.stokemill.co.uk

S

TOKE MILL is between four and five hundred years old and sits resplendently in the Norfolk countryside in Stoke Holy Cross just some 15 minutes south of Norwich. It is a watermill where two hundred years ago Jeremiah Colman began to mill the famous Colman’s Mustard. Now Stoke Mill, after its reinvention by owner Ludo Laccarino and chef Andrew Rudd two and a half years ago, has become one of Norfolk’s finest restaurants. The mellow decor, staff, music and of course the food are all superb. Andrew decided to cook a selection for us rather as if we had chosen the taster menu, and it arrived at a leisurely pace while we soaked up the atmosphere and relaxed into the experience. It was busy and buzzy, with all sorts of clientele, full of fun and chatter on a Thursday lunchtime. Our rather splendid first course came in a small bamboo box – deep-fried smoked Cheddar, paprika cheese straws, smoked salmon mousse, duck liver paté, with warm

home-made bread in a bag. It was accompanied by a glass of Picpoul de Pinet teasing us on deliciously to the next delight. Warm Brie with raisin chutney, goat’s cheese croquettes, homepickled grapes, on a cherry-wood platter, was a taste-bud joy. It was all served in a very relaxed fashion, allowing us to watch as amazing dishes appeared from the kitchen for other diners. There were eye-catching soufflés, steaks, fish of all sorts – I wanted to try them all! Next was surf and turf: scallops and belly pork with apple purée, mouthwateringly good and a perfect combination. Elements are bonded nowadays that not so many years ago no one would have dreamed of doing. And there was more… Panfried halibut on a seafood paella with a lobster bisque de homard, accompanied by a New Zealand Waipara River Bascand Estate Sauvignon Blanc, just right with this dish. Locally reared beef, perfectly cooked, with tiny roast potatoes and

small white onions, melted in the mouth, with a Malbec Penedo Borges complementing the meat. All our glasses were the splendid house wines, which start at £20. The list is carefully selected, tweaked regularly and sensibly priced, the most expensive being a Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne at £265. If we had thought the exquisite passionfruit soufflé with raspberry sorbet, or vanilla crème caramel with rhubarb macaroon and “textures” of rhubarb, was the finale, we would have been wrong. When we ordered coffee, out came more sumptuous goodies in the shape of home-made chocolate peanut balls, cherry chocolates and more macaroons.

HE MILL is a must on the eating-out list, I can’t wait to return. I want to do it all, lunch again, dinner, Sunday lunch. I have to eat everything on their wondrous menu… I heard a man having lunch with his wife on the next table exclaim: “This takes fish and chips to a new dimension.” I couldn’t have put it better myself, it summed up the whole Stoke Mill experience. Go, don’t wait for a reason, just go, it’s fabulous.

ARS IN VITRO 2013 £9.50 at The Library

ASTER is a time of refection, newness and birth. Families everywhere will be spending time together, whether they are using the bank holiday to finish all of that DIY, gardening, Easter egg hunts or just enjoying the extra time to lounge, chill and to eat and have fun. Here at The Library we are about to launch our brand new menu with some mouth watering options – from Lobster Mac ‘n’ Cheese to slowcooked Daube of Beef and of course thinking of Spring, wood-grilled Lamb Chops. We have also updated our wine offering with a stunning Chenin Blanc from South Africa, as well as very red-meat-friendly Malbec and Spanish varietals. One wine in particular is my drink of choice at the moment, from Tandem Navarra in the Basque region of Spain. Ars In Vitro 2013 Tempranillo Merlot is a perfect example of New Wave Spain – made by Jose Maria Fraile and Alica Eyaralar – two of the leading lights in the Navarra wine-making scene. Perfect with lamb or casseroles or just enjoying on its own. This year is an extra special year it will be our 10th Anniversary since opening The Library plus I can hardly believe it 25 years of running restaurants in Norwich. Keep an eye out for announments of a celebration or two.

All that remains to say is ‘Cheers!’ The Library Bar and Grill, Guildhall Hill, Norwich. www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk 01603 April/May 2016 Vanilla

f you are a lobster lover, you’ll know that they are a rare find outside expensive restaurants. But you can breath a sigh of relief – Just Lobster, in Tombland (the UK’s first and original lobster shack) is a celebration of our orange crustaceous friend… with a bit more besides! The premises has a stylish, yet fast food appeal, very family orientated. The sort of place you can just drop into without having to don a bow tie or tip the maitre ‘d! The menu is very lobster focused, as you would imagine, with every size available as either simply ‘cooked’, or baked and grilled in a variety of styles, such as ‘au gratin’, with mac ’n cheese, or with oyster sauce and breadcrumbs. The classic thermidor is here too, with creamy mushroom and sherry sauce. But lobsters aren’t the only stars: clam chowder, seafood gumbo, surf ’n turf, to name a few, plus a great range of burgers and wraps.

76

For a starter, we chose to share six king prawns on skewers with JL dipping sauce. These were fat, juicy, spankingly fresh, and probably the sweetest prawns I have ever tasted. A very generous portion, too, beautifully presented. The wine list here is eclectic, with lots of new world wines to choose from, plus a few French classics. My fellow diner chose a bottle of Argentinian Pure Organic Malbec Mendoza, which he described as full bodied, dark, well rounded, with some great blackberry overtones. Main courses arrived in good time. For me, a huge bowl of mussels, steamed in cream, white wine and shallot sauce – these were delicious, big, plump, juicy fellows. The sauce perfectly complemented the dish, without overpowering it and at only £10, this dish was amazing value. My friend decided to see what all the fuss was about with lobsters, so he chose a fresh steamed half lobster, finished

under the grill, with crushed new potatoes and coleslaw and fries. The meat was sweet, tender and everything you would expect from this regal creature. But it tasted even better knowing the price tag was a very reasonable £15. Almost full we decided to share a Blueberry and Apple Crumble. Bubbling hot, with oodles of fruit and a lightly toasted crumble topping, and served with a cooling scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Delicious! Some great coffee rounded off a very satisfying meal REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

My store cupboard always depends on the month or the season for top ingredients. Top of my ‘all year’ list would be free range eggs – so many dishes are created with fresh eggs and other good base ingredients, sourced locally. What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

At the end of the working day I like to relax with a nice glass of red wine, a slice of homemade pie, a selection of cheeses, chutneys and olives. That’s a perfect, simple supper for me. What type of cooking do you enjoy cooking the most?

Living and working in the Mediterranean for 10 years, I would say fish has become a firm favourite for me. It’s healthy and when fresh, fish becomes a delicious option with sauces, spices and marinades for a starter or main meal.

Living and working in Norfolk you have to go with each season as it is important to use local fresh seasonal ingredients and Norfolk has some of the best ingredients. At The Tuddenham Lodge we use local suppliers and particularly love the two which are in our own village, one for Tuddenham Honey and the other Danns icecream, with a wide choice in the area, why go anywhere else. O

N AN ICY day in March, the Gluten Free Shop & Cafe on Timber Hill, in Norwich, is a warm, welcoming and delicious-smelling haven! Open just two months, this small but big-hearted business is already thriving – busy every day, and buzzing when I arrive to sample their cafe food with owner Louisa Kiddell. As the name suggests, everything on the menu in the café is gluten free – and that’s guaranteed. But they also cater for a wide variety of other dietary needs, and ‘free from’ options include vegetarian, soya free, egg free, dairy free and vegan. It’s a great-looking menu – most notably a vast selection of mouth-watering pies and quiches, rolls and wraps with a multitude of fillings, salads, hot dishes, breakfast options, desserts and cakes. Much of the food here is homemade, but otherwise Louisa

buys local where she can find the quality she demands. These include Marsh Pig local meat, cheesy dough balls, pickle, cakes and coffee. “The provenance and standard of the ingredients and food we use in our café are a top priority,” says Louisa. “We like working with small producers who have the same belief system as us, who care about what they are doing and want to help people with food intolerances to eat what they want, rather than what they have to. We also want to show everyone, whether on not they have a food intolerance, that just because it’s gluten free, it doesn’t have to be taste free, or boring!”

I

’M KEEN to test this, so Louisa took a rare lunch break to help me taste some of the bestsellers at the café, starting with a homemade minestrone soup. Seriously thick, warming, packed with veg, and perfect to banish

those winter blues. Next up was a homemade vegetable chilli. This had a great kick to it, but not overpowering, just as a chilli should be. Big on flavour and so satisfying. Everyone loves a cheese and pickle roll, and I am no exception. This one hit the spot on every level. The gluten free bread here is excellent, with that ‘bready’ consistency that is often hard to achieve without gluten. We move on to a tasty vegetable quiche, the pastry crumbly and rich, and then some spicy flatbreads and Scrubby Oak dipping oil.

S

O WHAT’S for dessert? Whatever your intolerance, or if you just love cake, this is the place for you. “As a coeliac, finding cake that tastes like real cake is a challenge,” Louisa says. “But we have found some excellent local bakers who seem to have cracked it.” I was lucky enough to sample just a small selection – chocolate hazelnut, carrot cake, and carrot and citrus. All three were gorgeous, moreish and the perfect sweet hit. It’s no wonder this café is booming, it’s offering something to the growing community of people who want, or need, to eat gluten free, but who have struggled to find good places with imaginative menus. And for the rest of us, it’s just a friendly café, where the food and service are superb. Everyone can be satisfied here! REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

Why gluten free? BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd.

Gluten is a part of the protein found in wheat, barley and rye – the main ingredient in so many foods – so why be gluten free? It’s reported that 1 in 100 people in the UK have Coeliac Disease, a serious autoimmune condition, in which the body attacks itself when even a tiny bit of gluten is consumed by the sufferer – it can lead to many more health complications too, and the only remedy is a strict completely gluten free diet for life. If you think you may be showing symptoms (see www. coeliac.org.uk) go to see your GP. You can be gluten intolerant even if you are not Coeliac, and more people are now finding that they are suffering from anything from brain fog and migraines, skin rashes and aching joints, to feeling bloated and uncomfortable after a meal containing gluten. There is a health backlash going on right now, many are trying out a gluten or wheat free diet, and with today’s diet high in heavily processed convenience foods, it’s no wonder that people are not feeling well and looking towards alternatives; the trend towards a more traditional and unprocessed diet, one that is naturally gluten free, is set to continue.

GLUTEN-FREE DINING AT CÔTE BRASSERIE Côte Brasserie on Exchange Street have recently received accreditation from Coeliac UK for their fantastic gluten-free menu. Featuring many items from their main menu, Côte’s gluten-free offering is extensive and full of treats. Why not try the crab mayonnaise for starters, their classic beef bourguignon for mains and finish off with their signature crème caramel? The restaurant is open all day from breakfast through to lunch and dinner and there is even a glutenfree breakfast menu, making Côte a fantastic choice for all occasions, gluten-free or not! Don’t forget to take the voucher on page 79 to receive a complimentary kir royale when dining. Bon appétit!

CITY FARM SHOP A Foodie’s treasure trove

NE DAY Diane Meadows stopped to buy some asparagus from the farm shop at the Notcutts Garden Centre, on Daniels Road, Norwich, and ended up getting much more than she bargained for. “I went in for asparagus and walked out having agreed to buy the business,” said Diane. Then I went home to gently break the news to my husband.” Since then, Diane’s dream has turned into her passion and she is rightly proud of The City Farm Shop which, last year, was shortlisted for a Norfolk Food Hero Award by the Aylsham Show. The primary focus is to provide customers with the highest quality, locally-produced fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy products including fabulous cheeses, such as Norfolk’s Binham Blue, and delicious chutneys, jams, honey, cereals, oils and vinegars. “We are so lucky in Norfolk to have such great artisan food

84

producers,” said Diane. Daily seasonal deliveries are made by some of Norfolk’s best farms including cabbages and cauliflowers from Alysham, tomatoes from Stalham and tasty asparagus from Rollesby. “This morning, for example, we had our first delivery of rhubarb. It just delights me that I know the farmer who grew it, it was picked this morning, driven here and has already gone into a customer’s crumble,” said Diane. Coupled with outstanding and friendly customer service, it’s easy to understand why the shop’s loyal followers keep coming back. “Our customers like the fact we talk to them, and know who they are and what they are up to. They don’t want to go to supermarkets so much because of the impersonal nature of them,” explained Diane. Business has grown steadily year on year thanks to those who are largely seeking a different food shopping experience from that of a

big store and keen to endorse the buy local ethos. “Our prices compare favourably with Waitrose which is our local supermarket in Eaton. We're often at least 20 percent cheaper on many of their items,” said Diane. Diane is planning to repeat last year’s hugely-popular food fayre held outside the premises, which this year will be held on May 30th between 10am and 4.30pm, giving visitors the chance to taste the goods and meet producers. “I really believe the shop is a local treasure and I just want to ensure more people know we are here,” she said. ■ SHEREE HANNA City Farm Shop, Notcutts Garden Centre , Daniels Road, Norwich NR4 6QP 01603 507343 www.cityfarmshop.co.uk Mon to Sat 8.30am - 5.30pm Sunday 10am - 4.30pm

King Lear

By William Shakespeare

Ageing tyrant Lear faces the consequences of maintaining his supremacy through surveillance and cruelty, rather than wisdom. Where once Lear saw all, now his vision is occluded by doubt and deluded sentimentality. Scorning his advisers, Lear hands power to his treacherous daughters, Goneril and Regan. In the same impulse, he banishes the daughter who truly loves him – his youngest child, Cordelia. As Lear’s refuge from pain results in a second childishness, we are left wondering, can humanity be redeemed after such horror, or is this, indeed, our ‘promised end’? £18-£12 www.maddermarket.co.uk

Belinda Jennings Head Brewer Woodforde’s Brewery

My City Life

What attracted you to Norwich? I love the city of Norwich. It has a thriving and fast-developing beer scene. It’s great being more involved with the local pubs as a brewer.

Belinda Jennings is a Master Brewer and Head Brewer at Woodforde’s, based in Woodbastwick. Belinda has over 18 years industry experience having worked as a Lab Technician, Brewer and Quality Manager. Born in Suffolk, Belinda now lives in Norwich.

How did you end up in the brewing business? It’s all thanks to my mum. At the time I was in the dairy business and she had good links with Greene King. She suggested that instead of testing milk I should test beer. Unsurprisingly this didn’t take much persuading and I’ve never looked back! Have you faced any discrimination because it’s the beer business? No, not really, but you do still get

a surprised look on some men’s faces when you tell them what you do for a living. That surprise soon turns to envy, though! Are women playing a more significant role in British beer? Yes, definitely, both in hands-on brewing but also in management roles too. Women can really change the dynamics and feel of a very male dominant team, in a good way. There are also more women enjoying cask beer. Cask ale seems to have shaken off its old-fashioned stereotypes and today attracts a wide audience of both men and women. Interestingly, women are leading the shift towards drinking less volume but stronger flavoured beers, opening up an even wider range of beers on the market.

What’s the future for British brewing? Just getting bigger and better! Quality will improve at all levels as customers get more educated and discerning, and it will only continue to provide more choice for customers. Beer is becoming more respected, discussed and, therefore, appreciated. There’s an increasing number of beer sommeliers operating across the country – Bruce Ash at Woodforde’s was Norfolk’s first – and these sommeliers often run their own classes to impart their knowledge to eager drinkers. If you’re not drinking Woodforde’s beer what would be your chosen tipple? Any good, light, fruity hoppy cask or keg beer. I am always trying other breweries’ beers, it’s important to keep researching and staying in touch with changing trends. What is your favourite pub? I have too many to mention! I enjoy a good blend between a traditional style pub with a modern twist. I like pubs that attract all kinds of drinkers, from traditional cask to modern keg. n
