BE ‘BATTLE READY’ WITH NEW CITY SHIRT Vanilla talks to Daniella Moore at NCFC
L
ast month, Norwich City Football Club (NCFC) launched its new Erreà home kit for the 2017-18 Sky Bet Championship season. Since then, the new kit, manufactured by family-run Italian firm Erreà has proven to be really popular. The kit was launched in all three Canaries Official stores across Norwich and on the club’s official online store at shop. canaries.co.uk. And this year, the club is calling upon fans to be ‘Battle Ready’ for the 201718 season by sporting the new home shirt. Inspired by a very retro and historical kit from City’s heritage, the kit also combines a fresh and modern twist. We caught up with Daniella Moore, Buying and Merchandising Assistant to find
14
out how this year’s distinctive, yet classic-looking kit came about. “This year’s home kit is one I believe our supporters will love. We have really focused this year on creating a stripped back kit which has a historical yet modern flair,” explained Daniella. “A lot of time is spent making sure that the right fabric for the shirts is chosen, taking into account factors such as breathability and performance. Once again, we have used the world-renowned Mundial fabric, a high-performance fabric which is used by the highest professional leagues of France, Spain and Italy.” As with all Erreà fabrics, Mundial has been awarded the highly prestigious Oeko-Tex 100 certificate. This certificate is
awarded by an internationally recognised testing and research agency and guarantees that the fabric (and of course, the finished shirt) is free from any harmful or toxic chemicals. “For the club, knowing that Errea’s fabrics have been awarded this prestigious certificate, we know we’re working with the best fabrics in the team wear industry. Mundial fabric is breathable, soft to the touch and has moisture-wicking technology. These features aid the evaporation of sweat and help to regulate body temperature, so are perfect for professional athletes,” explained Daniella.
T
his year’s Norwich City kit design is set to continue to be popular with the club’s supporters. “The kit we have created for the coming season, which has been designed to be worn by all ages, has also been created so that the shirt, shorts and socks all complement each other. Once again we have pushed the kit design forward as it is the first time since the 1980s that a shirt of this nature has been seen, where the club has integrated the technical sponsor into the design. It will change the way shirts look in the future,” adds Daniella. NCFC also launched an away and third kit last month. To be part of the ‘battle’ for the 2017-18 season, purchase your shirt from one of the three Canaries Official stores across the city (Carrow Road, Chapelfield and Castle Mall), or on the club’s official retail website at shop. canaries.co.uk.

HELLO VANILLA! I am looking forward to sharing my Fashion Candy Style world with you all over the coming issues. A BIT ABOUT FASHION CANDY STYLE AND ME!
Fashion Candy Style is a Unique, Contemporary brand of Fashion Fusion. My mantra, amongst others, is Empowering people through style. Based in Suffolk, and covering Norfolk, Essex and London, we provide a diverse range of fashion services for individuals, groups and corporate companies. In a nutshell: from the age of 18 I became a Fashion Model. Today I still get the same buzz stepping on to the catwalk and photo projects for clients. Working within the industry for many years, evolved my passion for styling. Using this influence, I became a Personal Shopper & Style Image Consultant, advising clients the art of what suits them best and how to wear. Once FCS became established I was constantly asked to “arrange” fashion shows locally for different clients. Today Fashion Event Management is a big part of my services. FCS provides the Direction/ Production/Choreography/Models/Photographers/ MUA’s/Hair Artists – the complete infrastructure! FCS has recently launched a Model Bank, this stemmed from the need for a diverse range of models for all different projects. FCS has a large number of models available for all clients at NO cost. Talking and writing is my forte! I am privileged to be a Fashion Editor and columnist for various magazines. Bringing this all together, I am a Host and Compere. Cool as Cazal CAZAL defined the typical hip-hop look of the 80s like no other brand. Many of hip-hop’s brightest stars (both past and present) have rocked a pair of Cazals in their music videos, around town, and virtually anywhere else they go. They are up there with Ray-Ban in terms of cultural importance, and they also provide ample protection from the sun and longlasting durability. If you want to complete your futuristic and ultra-cool wardrobe, then you have to have a pair of CAZALs. Some of the legendary designs from that era are still trendsetting even now!

Transitional Tips
D
on’t get upset but I’m going to say Autumn/Winter. And don’t worry, I’m suggesting a soft exit to Summer, not a hard one! It’s that time of year once again, when our daily wardrobe decisions are compromised by the inconsistent weather and changing temperatures. Autumn is on the horizon, although with a bit of luck we'll enjoy many more weeks of sunshine and warmth, but strappy sundresses and silver sandals already no longer feel appropriate. If like me, you want to drag out your summer wardrobe as long as possible, but you’re ready for a move on but don't want to look like your desperately seeking winter, you need to embrace the following neat transitional tricks. My first thought is to get back into ankle boots, which will still give you the opportunity to show off those bronzed pins whilst giving a gentle nod to the months ahead. Ankle boots are such a great trend, they work brilliantly with big oversized shirt dresses, boho tops and shorts, skinny jeans rolled up, fitted dresses, in fact it will give a proper modern twist to almost anything you like.

nd for those of you who know me, I’m back on the white shirt soapbox again. There is nothing quite like a white shirt Transitional to make you look and feel winner: fabulously healthy and fresh The white and show off that touch of a shirt tan achieved from your very careful sunbathing. With a long sleeve rolled up, you can adapt easily to changes in temperature. Another transition winner is Tip 2 is to start layering your black. A black t-shirt, black short skimpier numbers with t-shirts sleeved dress, black jeans, black underneath. Those gorgeous shirt (basically anything black) tie-died strappy dresses will look but lightweight. If you have a bit fabulous with a t-shirt underneath of colour you’ll look super tanned and you can move that favourite in the softer sunlight of late dress forward into the new summer/early autumn and black season. is soooo forgiving and basically a Another transitional trick is best friend whenever. a well tailored jacket, which is These are my ‘tide you over an easy way to add a layer, but tips’ to help manage your barely equally cool is a short denim concealed excitement for the jacket with sleeves turned really gorgeous new Autumn up, jackets are your transition Winter collections and fabulous wardrobe’s best friend! designs now beginning to trickle Next suggestion is to start in and signal a truly wonderful wearing darker coloured footwear, season ahead. e all need time to chill out, relax and do something fun and creative. Mabel & Doll, owned by Jo Aston, taps into this need perfectly, with informal furniture up-cycling workshops, combined with afternoon tea served on mismatched vintage china and delicious homemade cakes. But the main ingredient of this wonderfully nostalgic experience is fun and friendship. “The idea of Mabel & Doll came from my Nan, Doris, and her cousins, a group of fabulous, strong women who ran the teas in the church market,” says Jo. “It’s a powerful memory of fun, laughter and supportive women, and it inspired me to set up a business that combined my love of upcycling furniture, baking and collecting vintage bone china.” Held bi-monthly in New Buckenham, each workshop

Welcome to the village of New Buckenham – creative hotspot and home to two unique businesses... begins with an old fashioned cream tea served on beautiful vintage china and crisp linen. Who could feel stressed after that?! So what techniques can we learn from Jo? “We provide an item to paint and pick a different craft each time. It could be chalk painting, decoupage or transfers. Chalk paint is a special kind of paint – we use Evelyn Grant. You apply it to furniture and rub it down to leave that lovely distressed layered look. “Decoupage is a method of putting a pattern or pretty detail onto furniture. We cut out patterns from vintage paper napkins and stick one layer onto the furniture. It’s so fine that it looks painted on. For transfers, we rub on a mirror image of a design printed onto greaseproof paper.” Outside the workshops, Jo also upcycles furniture which

she sells in The Other Curator, a shop in New Buckenham run by Caryn Louis. “I look for furniture which is unusual, pretty, or has nice mouldings,” Jo says. “I then renovate and restore, add some new knobs and the transformation is complete. “I will also be offering more intimate workshops once a month in Caryn’s studio next to the shop. My other workshops can cater for 15 people, but Caryn’s studio is only big enough for four, which means I can give more hands-on tuition for people who want to work on their own pieces.”What a great way to kick back, learn a new skill and have fun too. ccording to Caryn Louis, there is no limit on gorgeousness! And she should know, she’s the owner of The Other Curator, a quirky shop in New Buckenham that positively oozes creativity, style, fun and colour. Here, you will find the most wonderful treasures to touch, try and take home to enjoy. Bohemian and vintage style clothes and jewellery from around the world, funky embroidered shoes from China and Indian leather bags, alongside beautiful decorative items such as cushions, vases and throws – little touches that will make powerful statements around the home. “I love things that are distinctive” says Caryn. “I’m a bit of a scavenger, always on the look out for unusual and beautiful items to offer my customers.”
August/September 2017 Vanilla
Caryn’s creativity extends to her studio, which she runs next to the shop. Here she creates her own artworks and occasionally teaches small friendly art and craft classes. Caryn has some firm views about art, and believes in making it more accessible. “Art can be so pretentious sometimes. We use the walls in the shop to hang work by talented artists from Norfolk and further afield, so it can be seen side by side with all the wonderful textures, colours and materials. It gives people who wouldn’t necessarily visit an art gallery the opportunity to engage with and enjoy art they might not have otherwise seen.” Caryn sometimes shares her creative studio space with a friend and neighbour, Jo Aston, who owns Mabel & Doll and runs upcycling furniture workshops. “Jo is just starting to hold smaller workshops here, in my studio for up to four people. Our businesses complement each other perfectly and she also sells her upcycled furniture and
homewares in my shop.” Adding yet another string to her bow, Caryn has a holiday cottage next to the shop, a beautiful, stylish timber-framed building which has the same unique charm of the shop. The cottage is advertised on Airbnb. It’s a great place to come and stay to explore the area. This is a wonderful part of Norfolk and New Buckenham is the oldest medieval village in the country. It’s well worth a special visit as there are also two great pubs that do delicious food. With Caryn’s burning creativity at the heart of this fascinating village, New Buckenham could be the place to go for those objects of desire. ■ Don’t miss Caryn’s pop-up stall, Number 237 in Norwich Market, 7th August for one week, Monday to Saturday. www.theothercurator.co.uk Also find the shop on Facebook (The other Curator) and Instagram (othercurator)

“Parents could be facing upwards of £250,000 to educate a child in the private sector from reception to sixth form”
Can I afford to send my children to private school? MY QUESTION: For a while now I have been contemplating sending my two children to private school. I feel that they will receive a better education and following the recent issues one of my children has been experiencing at school, I think it is time to properly consider it. My main problem is going about financing it; my children are 7 and 9 so they will be in private education for many years. My parents want to contribute but how can we go about funding it and what are the options for my husband and I and my parents?
42
A
s a parent of school aged children myself, the quality of the education my children receive and the opportunities they have whilst at school are very important to me. Whilst we are lucky to have some excellent state schools in East Anglia, you may already have your heart set on a private education and having seen a huge rise in private school fees over the last few years, parents could be facing upwards of £250,000 Vanilla August/September 2017
REAL LIVES to educate a child in the private sector from reception to sixth form. First off, take advice early on – both financial and legal. It may be that you can afford the school fees by combining yours and the grandparents’ resources. The grandparents may welcome the added bonus of inheritance tax relief if they can meet the fees out of their excess income. Any gifts of capital towards the payment of school fees would be treated as a potentially exempt transfer (PET) and the value of the PET would be included in that person’s estate for seven years from the date of the gift.
A
lternatively, you could set up a family trust. You and the grandparents (and anybody in the family who wished to give money to the trust) could transfer money or other assets into the trust during their lifetime or via their Will on death. The most flexible type of trust is a discretionary trust, which has its own inheritance tax allowance and the trustees decide if, when and how much money is paid out to the beneficiaries. The beneficiaries could be your children and grandchildren and anybody else you wished to add when setting up the trust. Trust law is a complex area and there are a number of tax implications to consider when setting up and administering a trust – these should be talked through with a legal advisor to determine whether a family trust is right for you. ■ August/September 2017 Vanilla

LEARNING
WHAT MAKES A CHILD SUCCEED AT SCHOOL? As thousands troop back to school with heavy hearts and shiny shoes, this is a good time for parents to consider how we can help our children succeed...
W
hile all parents want their children to do well in school, most of us haven’t got a clue about creating a climate that makes children want to learn. Parents have more power than anyone to motivate their children to study, but they can’t force school success by helicoptering around over every detail of their child’s life. Instead, they need to provide the kind of secure, thoughtful, encouraging environment at home, from which children can go out and forge their own successful way through school and beyond. Here are the areas that experts say parents need to focus on:
August/September 2017 Vanilla
GOOD ATTITUDES
Children do what we do, not what we say. A classic experiment in the US found that by far the best way to encourage children to be generous was for their parents and teachers to show generous behaviour – without a word about it. So, model what you want your child to imitate. Keep anxiety about school down and encourage them to see learning as interesting, enjoyable and exciting. Foster a positive problem-solving attitude. Not “I can’t do this”, but “How can I do this?” Keep the pressure off, and show a genuine interest in what they are doing at school.
“Encourage your child to see that learning is a balance between enjoyment and effort. It’s fun to learn a new thing, but it takes concentration and repetition to master it.” GOOD HEALTH
Dull, sluggish children can’t do well in school. Brains and bodies are too intimately related. To give just one example: omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as

LEARNING
‘Good choices are at the heart of good learning, whether it’s when to do homework, who to choose as a friend, or what subjects to take in the sixth form’ salmon, walnuts and kiwi fruit, help support brain synapses, which in turn help turn on critical brain functions such as memory and learning. There are thousands of others. That’s why it’s vital that your child has a good diet and enough exercise and sleep – even when it means unpopular decisions like being strict about junk food and banning electronics from the bedroom. GOOD RELATIONSHIPS
In school, children need to get on well with classmates and teachers, work in groups, deal with bullies, and know how to ask for help when they need it. So show them what good relationships look like. Try not to be over-critical of yourself or your child. Aim for friendly, honest and straightforward dealings with others, and fight any school battles firmly but without blame and anger.
younger children to make simple choices – grapes or banana for snack? Teach older ones to weigh options and think about consequences. Talk about shortand long-term benefits, and help older children learn how to examine their priorities and be true to themselves in the choices they make.
46
“A child needs to feel known, understood and valued as an individual, and have the space and opportunity to develop his or her own interests and strengths. Ideally, school and home work very much in partnership to achieve this. To parents, I would say the best thing you can do is to provide a secure, thoughtful, encouraging place at home, from which children can confidently forge their own successful way through school and beyond. Show interest in what your child is doing at school, to show them that learning is exciting and fun – but keep anxiety about excelling down, and don’t worry too much about supervising every aspect of every homework assignment!” Stephen Crump, Headmaster, Hethersett Old Hall
GOOD LEARNING
Lay the groundwork for school with lots of relaxed reading, talking, noticing and experiencing. Encourage your child to see that learning is a balance between enjoyment and effort. It’s fun to learn a new thing such as adding up, but it takes concentration and repetition to master it. Get them to see how good it feels to acquire new skills. Teach them that learning is a journey that everyone does in their own way, and that setbacks and mistakes are part of it. People are there to help, but no one can do it for them.
GOOD CHOICES
Good choices are at the heart of good learning, whether it’s when to do homework, who to choose as a friend, or what subjects to take in the sixth form. Allow
What our schools say...
GOOD ORGANISATION
Children get more from school if they live in a well-run home and learn to manage their “stuff”. UK researchers have found,
School
for example, that dirty, noisy and cluttered homes contribute directly to poor health, and therefore learning, in preschoolers. Manage family time for calm mornings and a proper breakfast. Children thrown late and frazzled into school lose significant learning time. Help your child keep their school things organised and arrangements clear in their minds – especially important if they are living between two homes. Teach older children how to plan ahead and how to manage their possessions and money. ■ Extracts from ‘The Six Secrets of School Success’ by Hilary Wilce

CAFÉ GELATO
Cool and smooth – Italian-style!
HERE IS a little ray of Italian sunshine on Opie Street in Norwich called Café Gelato, which is offering something the city has never seen before – real, authentic and delicious Italian gelato. For the uninitiated, gelato is similar to ice cream, but also very different. Owner Sandro Glorio, who runs the business with his wife Jenny, explains why. “Gelato is more like a cream, it’s not hard, it has a perfect soft, smooth texture and clean taste, and it melts very slowly. Ice cream is served with a scoop, but gelato is traditionally served with a spatula. We also make sorbet, which is made with water, sugar and fruit. We only use natural ingredients, no artificial additives.” Sounds delicious, and customers agree. Café Gelato opened in October last year, and has already found fans of all ages. Sandro and Jenny make all the gelato and sorbet in their in-house kitchen or ‘laboratory’ from scratch every day, and there are some tantalising flavours on offer. August/September 2017 Vanilla
“The most popular gelato flavours are chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio, cherry and vanilla, Nutella and tiramisu,” says Sandro. Salted caramel is also a big hit. This flavour does not exist in Italy, but it’s so popular in the UK that we have created it specially. “We also make some unusual flavours such as tea and coconut, and special seasonal ones like Christmas pudding and panettoni, gingerbread, and pumpkin and cinnamon, which sold out very fast at Halloween!” “Sorbet flavours are fruits such as mango, strawberry and raspberry, and we are working on some exciting new ones for the summer, like Prosecco and peach, kiwi and banana and watermelon.” Sandro has strong Norfolk roots, his mother was born in King’s Lynn and his uncles lived in Norwich so when he was growing up he visited often. “I always loved this city, it’s vibrant and so friendly. When my cousins from Norwich visited us in Italy, they tasted gelato and said that a gelato café would be very popular here.
“At that time I was running a rose growing business with my mother, but Jenny, who was working as a barista, and I began to talk about this, and it sounded like a wonderful idea. “We wanted to have the skill to make the best possible gelato, so we went to the Gelato University in Bologna to learn how to make it correctly. When we knew we could make the best quality gelato we moved here to Norwich and opened the shop. “Jenny’s skill as a barista is very important because we also sell real Italian coffee which we buy from a small but very famous artisan roasting company located in Florence.” Café Gelato is fast turning into a family business too, with 14-year old son Alessandro helping out at weekends and learning the trade. What a romantic, cool and delicious story! ■ Cafe Gelato, 6 Opie St, Norwich 01603 662527 Tues-Sat: 10.30am-6pm Sunday: 11am-5pm

Fast class! T
HE GLA was in impressive vehicle when we featured it last; such a practical car, which exuded style. The 2017 update, with the AMG-line features, is all the more striking! The GLA has a noticeable muscularity about it. The front end looks so purposeful – seeing one in a rear view mirror there is no mistaking which stable it came from! From the side view as well, there are features to underline its sporty credentials. Big 19 inch alloy wheels allow a glimpse of perforated front discs and brake calipers with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ clearly visible. I like the fact that the tyres are ‘run flat’ so no more wheel changing on the roadside after a drive across the yard after the farrier has paid a visit! Intelligent four-wheel drive offers so many advantages around the lanes on slippery surfaces or over the wet grass of the point-to-point meet. But with the Mercedes-Benz GLA
AMG-line, you also have superbly comfortable vehicle ideally suited to the long distance journey and with the space and practicality of a large hatchback. Inside the sporty features continue, such as the special seats, brushed stainless pedals and, the item I love the most, the flat-bottomed, multi-function steering wheel. This not only looks great but as the name suggests, has functions: controls are at ones’ fingertips while driving and the ease one may slide into the seat! And for the record, it feels good too! There are some other great ideas inside too, some which will keep cousin Hermione happy for hours. Favourite for her will

SUMER HAIR
Phillip And Donna at John Olivers solve your holiday worries WILL CHLORINE TURN MY BLONDE COLOURTREATED HAIR GREEN?
Chlorine does have a tendency to turn blonde hair a sort of khaki colour. We recommend a protector, such as Kerastase Soleil Huile Celeste, applied before you go to the beach or the pool. Make sure you rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterwards. If your hair does change colour, our emergency tip is to neutralise the green with tomato ketchup! Just comb through a small amount and leave on for a maximum of a couple of minutes. HOW CAN I STOP HUMIDITY MAKING MY HAIR GO FRIZZY?
Comb a lightweight serum or oil through your hair – anything that's going to weigh it down – during the day. Then blow dry it in the evening before going out. I'M SHORT OF SPACE IN MY LUGGAGE FOR LOTS OF PRODUCTS – WHAT SHOULD I PRIORITISE?
If you can only take one product with you we would suggest a hair masque. It's a really versatile product – you can use it neat for an intensive repair treatment or dilute it for regular conditioning. ands up who, despite eating a healthy diet and exercising, still can’t tone and tighten their stomachs or shift the inches from those thighs? Well, listen up ladies... there is help out there. Say hello to Lipofirm Pro, widely thought to be the most effective of all the inch-loss and body contouring systems on the market. The new Beluga Clinic, at Hethersett, run by registered nurse, Kelly Mendham, introduced the Lipofirm Pro system three months ago and is really impressed by the dramatic results that the clinic has been achieving. LipofirmPro treatments reshape your body, helping to firm, tone, tighten, sculpt and reduce those stubborn areas where exercise and dieting is not effective. THE TECHY STUFF
LipofimPro uses ‘TriLipo’ technology that combines Radio Frequency (which heats up the dermal and fat layers stimulating the release of liquid fat from the cells) and Dynamic Muscle Activation (internal and external pressure causing a ‘squeeze’ effect allows the fat to drain away) and Skin Tightening (contraction of the collagen fibres) which tightens and tones the overall appearance of the skin. The effects are long term and can be maintained with minimal top-up treatments. THE EXPERIENCE
This treatment is not painful and, depending on how high you can tolerate the settings for heat and vibration, need not be uncomfortable. I opted for a session on my stomach, as it was the area of most concern! There was pressure as the handpiece moved over the area, but some may find different areas of the body are more sensitive than
After 2 sessions
others. The skin temperature was constantly monitored as the radio frequency caused a warm sensation as the deep layers are gradually heated. Kelly kept the headpiece moving quickly so the skin didn’t get too hot. Afterwards I noticed some redness, but this disappeared as the skin cooled, within the hour. THE RESULTS
Results for me could be seen straight away. Measured before and after, I lost half an inch after just one session on the lowest settings. After a course of sessions, Kerry assured me I would see significant results! Lipofirm Pro treatments start at £85 and payment plans are available. For appointments and consultations call 07801 976479. www.beluga-aesthetics.com VANILLA SPECIAL OFFER Kelly is offering an amazing discount for Vanilla readers – £540 for 8 sessions, a saving of £300! YOUR
DENTAL PROBLEMS
SOLVED
HOW CAN I HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE IN MY SMILE?
Being worried about the appearance of your teeth is very common, but there are simple changes we can make to improve your smile, such as tooth whitening or replacing discoloured fillings, contouring and shaping of gums using our laser, and Invisalign is an excellent option for straightening teeth. Ross has a great deal of experience and expertise in cosmetic procedures, and together with our highly skilled technician and implant specialist we can offer a variety of techniques to achieve the results you want. HOW CAN I FEEL MORE RELAXED ABOUT GOING TO THE DENTIST?
Feeling confused, worried or anxious about dental treatment, costs and options? Norwich dentist Ross Campbell and his team tackle some of the questions most commonly asked by patients
Feeling stressed or anxious about going to the dentist is quite natural, so we ensure that the experience we offer our patients, from arriving in reception to leaving after treatment, is as comfortable, relaxed and stress free as possible. If you are particularly anxious about your visit, let us know in advance so we can reassure you and take things at a pace that suits you. You may also find it beneficial to have a consultation with our visiting acupuncturist prior to your dental treatment. I’D LOVE WHITER TEETH, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Tooth whitening systems are excellent, but we would always recommend these are carried out in the surgery by a dental
professional because it’s the safest way and will produce the best results. I HATE DRILLS AND INJECTIONS, ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS?
Ross provides the highest quality dental care and has invested in the latest state-of-the-art technology to provide alternatives to traditional dental treatment. This includes ‘The Wand’, a computer-controlled injection system that can administer local anaesthetic to just one tooth, eliminating the hours of facial numbness which often accompanies dental treatment, and is almost pain free. The Waterlase is a very sophisticated piece of laser equipment that uses laser energy and a spray of water to perform a wide range of dental procedures without the need for an injection or a drill and is pain free, fast, and less invasive. IS IT TRUE LASERS CAN BE USED FOR MINOR COSMETIC SURGERY?
Yes, we can very effectively use the laser to contour or shape gums, improve the appearance of your smile, and quickly and painlessly remove skin tags, blemishes or lumps on the face. MY TEETH ARE VERY SENSITIVE, CAN YOU HELP?
For many patients sensitive teeth means drinking or eating anything cold can be very painful. If you have already tried using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, and this hasn’t
Vanilla August/September 2017
BEAUTY HEALTH
given you relief, then Ross can use laser energy to desensitise teeth in the surgery. This is pain free and takes just a few seconds with instant results. WHICH TOOTHPASTE SHOULD I USE?
With so many toothpastes on the market it can be confusing, but it’s really down to personal choice. Rather than the brand of toothpaste you use, it’s more important to focus on correct brushing technique to remove as much plaque from your teeth as possible. Ross works closely with our Dental Therapist, Pip, who talks patients through technique and products tailored to individual needs. I SUFFER WITH GUM DISEASE, IS THERE A SOLUTION?
Ross is passionate about offering the best solutions for patients who have gum disease and there are many treatment options, such as regular appointments with our dental therapist. But alongside the traditional cleaning treatments and oral hygiene methods, Ross uses the Waterlase which has shown superb results not seen with any other technique. We also work with a local specialist to help achieve the best outcome for patients with more complex treatment needs. WILL I BE ABLE TO AFFORD MY DENTAL TREATMENT?
We offer several ways to pay for your dental treatment and one popular
August/September 2017 Vanilla
option with our patients is Denplan Care. This is a comprehensive dental payment plan covering exams and routine treatment, which means you are guaranteed the best dental care with affordable and predictable monthly payments. If you need more extensive or cosmetic treatment we can usually offer a range of treatment options and costs, and we can schedule appointments at intervals to suit you, or arrange interest free finance to help spread the cost. HOW LONG IS A CONSULTATION AND WHAT IS INVOLVED?
If you are new to the practice we will arrange for you to have a 30-minute consultation appointment, where Ross will discuss any concerns you may have about your teeth or gums and carry out a thorough examination of your mouth, head and neck, including checks for oral cancer. If x-rays or photographs are required, we have the latest digital imaging technology, and you can see
the results immediately on the patient monitor. It is important to us that you are fully involved in your treatment planning and we will discuss the treatment options with you. We also offer a free cosmetic consultation to give patients the opportunity to discuss anything they would like improved, however large or small, and we will give you all the information you require along with an idea of the cost to help you decide if it’s right for you. n If you would like a free cosmetic consultation please call Alison on 01603 660758 and she will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have. WELLBEING
I
F YOU think that Pilates is like yoga, then think again. While yoga is holistic and works on the mind, body and spirit, Pilates focuses entirely on the body. | went along to The Pilates Studio Norwich to test it out. My teacher, Lauren, explained how Pilates works. “Pilates is a system of controlled, specific exercises that improves strength, mobility and flexibility. It can make profound and lasting changes to the way your body feels and moves, your physical awareness, and leaves you with a wonderful sense of wellbeing. It’s ideal for everyone, any age or fitness level.” Could Pilates help with my postural issues caused by a sedentary job, a grumbling hip, and sore shoulders? Lauren assured me that it could. Pilates exercises are carried out on a floor mat or a range of resistance-based equipment. These machines work on the same principal as the kind you
60
would find in a gym, but far less intimidating. And, unlike a gym, the Pilates studio has a quiet, restful atmosphere, with no thumping rock music or overmuscular men; much more my cup of tea! I began my hour-long session sitting on ‘The Cadillac’, doing exercises to mobilise my spine and develop abdominal strength. Lauren’s tuition was very specific and helped me to carry out each movement correctly and understand the benefit. I could feel tugs in all the right places. We then did some shoulder mobilisation on the same machine, to strengthen and stabilise my shoulders and encourage me to keep them down and relaxed. Next up was ‘The Reformer’, lying down and using my feet and legs to push through, helping pelvis placement. It was challenging, but not exhausting; gentle, but insistent. “We start new clients with a
one-to-one session to assess their fitness and specific needs,” Lauren says. “As time goes on we increase the resistance levels to push them further, so they continue to improve and gain strength.” Back on The Cadillac, I used controlled movements with a leg spring to mobilise my hips. Then a cat stretch to lengthen my spine and work my shoulders. Lauren was right, I did have a strong sense of wellbeing and physical lightness after our session, and a real glow. My muscles had been given a much needed wake-up call, but I didn’t need a lie down to recover or a cold shower! Lauren’s expert tuition was easy to understand, and her friendly manner made it great fun too. It’s powerful, practical and peaceful. n t: 07891987055 e: info@thepilatesstudionorwich.com thepilatesstudionorwich.com

The gallery in Cromer opened in 2012, followed by Norwich in 2016, feeling the eclectic mix of art and craft that is so popular in Cromer would work well in the city. One year on the new gallery is also making a name for great art and craft; feedback is very positive – customers frequently make comments such as “I’ve never seen so many beautiful things in one gallery”! There is a wide range of art on show, including original oils, limited edition prints, photography, ceramics, glass and sculpture. Norfolk painter Ruth Bunnewell is a firm favourite, tipped by House and Garden magazine as a rising star of British landscape painting, plus o ther highly regarded East Anglian painters such as Richard Dack and Molly Garnier and the brilliant pet portrait artist Jenni Cator. The Cyclades collection in Mediterranean blues
● If the Greek Islands are your cup of tea, then
use beautiful inky blue and white patterns at windows – tie die is very on-trend look. Add a few cushions on a plain white bed sheets and you’ll start getting the look. ● Or maybe a lush Moroccan garden is more your thing? Then the sludgy greens and mustard yellows which have been cropping up will help to take you there. Distressed furniture is still popular and will definitely add to the ‘look’. Transform an old cupboard or bench with some Rustoleum paints in chalky whites and coastal blues. ● For a really exotic feel, the Ardmore wallpaper
collection from Cole & Son will transport you to the African desert or the leafy rainforests. Make a statement with these big bold prints and use soft voiles and linens to accessorize. ‘Savuti’ in particular is strong and pretty with a gorgeous palette of colours and a cheeky monkey hiding in the branches which means the sun will be out even on a dull day!

TIME TO INVEST IN...
THE HARD STUFF There comes a time when we have to bite the bullet and make some serious investments in our homes. And we mean more than a pair of new curtains – we’re talking the hard stuff, the more expensive
stuff. The likes of wood, metal, stone, porcelain, glass don’t come cheap but will add a touch of class and real value to your home. Here’s just some of the great products available locally... LUXURY VINYL TILES such
as Distinctive or Karndean are one of the hardest wearing and most versatile floor coverings on the market, coming in almost any design imaginable. Being waterproof and therefore suitable for all areas in the home, it’s one of the best things to install to add value to your property and will last you a lifetime! Costs from £55m2 (including fitting) Arbons Carpet and Flooring
PORCELAIN FLOOR TILES
See p89 for stockist’s details
Low maintenance and a cheaper alternative to stone, porcelain tiles don’t need any sealing, waxing or polishing when they’re laid or on-going. Impervious to stains, cleaning only requires a mop and warm water. They can be used safely in the bathroom and other areas which frequently get wet, such as balconies, patios and swimming pools. And if you’re thinking of using porcelain tiles in your bathroom or wetroom, why not install underfloor heating to quickly dry up any splashes of water?

T
HE WAY we live in our homes has changed dramatically over the years. Most families have two working parents, and when they come home from work, neither of them want to be stuck in the kitchen alone, cooking dinner, while the rest of the family is somewhere else in the house. The cooks want the walls to come down, making the modern, open plan home incredibly popular and creating more light and space. With the kitchen, living and dining areas all open, this creates an amazing space for socialising, spending quality time with family
members and helping the kids with their homework. To complete the look, large glazed doors to the garden are a great way to bring the garden into the home and also extend your living space into the outdoors. All structural alterations need to comply with building regulations, and could include removing walls, installing sliding / folding glazed doors or building an extension. The works will need to be inspected and signed off by a Building Inspector, failure to comply with
this could cause serious issues when trying to sell your house. Extensions may require planning Festoon lights 20 bulbs permission depending the size £90 Poshon Plants of the extension and location of www.poshplants.co.uk your property. The first step is to talk to a building contractor that offers a design service, an architect or a structural engineer. To complete the look everybody wants a fabulous kitchen. Kitchen styles have fallen into two styles, whether it’s the flush, minimalist look, featuring a lot of grey and white, with high gloss doors, clean lines and stainless steel. The other popular style is Shaker, which is timeless, with natural oak or painted finishes; very simple and beautiful.

inking your house to the garden creates a further illusion of space. Hard landscaping plays its part here – most people these days want a perfectly flush finish between indoor and outdoor floor level but this is not always possible for technical reasons. Choose two floorings that complement each other, this also goes for the décor of the interior room too – consider how the ‘look’ will best blend with the garden space. Placing a few subtle lights in the garden, perhaps uplighting a few shrubs or a particularly nice tree, will incorporate the view of the garden into your interior space at night, making it feel bigger.

MAKING OVER THE GARDEN
Don’t neglect outdoor space during a property spruce-up. Gardens can be a room, or several rooms, in themselves. Remember, ďŹ rst impressions count, so cast a critical eye over the outside of your home. Perfect Planting came up with this circular design of raised beds constructed in blockwork and rendered, for an inner city courtyard in need of updating. It is viewed from the house easily and so has been designed to be an extension of the conservatory, an outside room in effect.

MATCH YOUR MOOD AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON!
SMART Technology is coming to your home or business with innovative and cost-effective lighting control systems from Rako. Rid your home of old-fashioned light switches and set the mood automatically and at light speed (literally) for entertaining, weekend footy matches on TV, movie nights in the family room and much more with an automated lighting control system! Imagine walking in after a busy day and immediately being able to transform your home into a relaxation haven with soft lights for a quiet dinner or a calming bathroom retreat. With room by room lighting controls, we look at each space in your home and provide illumination based on function. THINGS TO DECIDE:
Whole house or single room: One keypad to control lights throughout the home or if you’re designing a special room (like a movie room or sitting room), a single room system is more cost-effective. Wired or Wireless? Wired is great for new house builds and complex programming. Wireless is best for existing homes as no need for extra wiring. Control: Wall-mounted keypad for the home or smart phone application that you can operate from home or away. NEED MORE LIGHTSPIRATION?
Make your Smart Home (or Office) dream a reality with a Rako lighting system supplied and installed by The Norfolk Lighting Company. Visit our showroom at Taverham Garden Centre to see our lighting displays.

or nearly 30 years Strattons has built up strong relationships with local suppliers and growers, to put the Brecks firmly on the map with their delicious produce. Our spring expansion of CoCoes café deli into a converted on-site barn means we have lots more space and are now open every day to showcase the fabulous suppliers and producers on our own doorstep. You can pop in for breakfast, brunch, casual catch ups, informal business lunches, family time, a quick cuppa or an afternoon tipple. We have created a beautiful fresh space, sympathetic to the original barn with a modern edge using natural materials saved from the barn, sit alfresco in summer or snuggle on the bespoke honey yellow benches in winter. From the menu you can treat yourself to an all day breakfast, with classics such as a full English, kedgeree with soft poached eggs, kippers or come in for brunch, lunch and early

NORFOLK RESTAURANT WEEK
N
OW IN its fifth year the much anticipated Norfolk Restaurant Week, in association with Norfolk Hideaways, launches again this autumn and runs from 30th October until 10th November (excluding weekends). Previously run as North Norfolk Restaurant Week, popularity has prompted organisers to make this year a countywide affair, with restaurants throughout Norwich and surrounding areas now joining those in North & West Norfolk. “I believe the success of the event is not only down to the amazing value diners receive from the fixed price menus on offer, but that it’s a real celebration of the Norfolk food scene, which is exactly what we set out to
illaT VaEn O P R R

achieve. It's a great excuse to try a new restaurant or an old favourite, particularly with large groups of friends and family. The social element which restaurant week provokes is a real pleasure to witness” says founder and organiser Martin Billing. Last year 46 restaurants welcomed 21,000 diners through their doors over the course of the event. With the focus on seasonal and local produce chefs once again showcased their talents, and for two weeks satisfied both appetites and bank accounts with unbeatably priced menus. As in previous years participating restaurants this year will offer set menus of either 2 courses for £10 and 3 for £15 or 2 for £15 and 3 courses for £20. No vouchers or codes are
required, but booking is strongly recommended.
N
EW ADDITIONS for this year include Jive Kitchen, Warwick St Social, Farmyard and Yellows Bar and Grill in Norwich joining the stylish Strattons Hotel in Swaffham along with longstanding favourites on the coast including The White Horse in Brancaster Staithe and Titchwell Manor Hotel. With around 70 restaurants, bistros and cafes taking part this year it's definitely an event not to be missed.
A full list of participating restaurants can be found at www.norfolkrestaurantweek.co.uk with menus due for release in mid September.

YOU WILL NEED 100g butter 250ml water zest of one orange 150g plain flour 1/2 tsp salt 3 eggs 1 vanilla pod
Butterscotch Sauce:
100g butter 100g soft dark brown sugar 100g golden syrup 150ml double cream pinch of salt
1 Combine water, sugar, vanilla and the orange zest. Bring to the boil over a medium heat. Add the flour to the boiling water mixture and stir to form a dough. 2 Cook over a medium heat till the dough comes away from the side of the pan. Transfer to an electric mixer and beat at medium speed adding the eggs one by one. Once all combined to make a smooth, glossy paste, let the dough rest in a warm place for 10/15 minutes (don’t let the dough go cold as it is difficult to pipe the mixture). 3 Spoon the mix into a pipping bag and pipe the mixture onto 10cm paper squares in fingers or spirals, working from inside out. 4 To cook, deep fry until golden brown and cooked through 5-7 mins. Dust in cinnamon sugar. 5 For sauce, melt butter, brown sugar and salt. When dissolved, add the syrup and cook for 1 minute, add cream and gently bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. My City Life
spare time. Over the last 12 months it’s been everything from classical concerts to wrestling tournaments. I can’t say “no” to my friends! More travel is on my bucket-list and I would like to visit Japan in the next couple of years.
What do you love about Norwich?
Why do you think Norwich Theatre Royal is so successful? There are a number of reasons, but it’s mainly because the theatre has embedded itself in the community so well. The programming is finely tuned to fit in with the tastes of the people who live and work in the region, treading a fine line between popular favourites and some innovative and challenging work. We are also an educational charity, so learning and participation are at the heart of what we do and our team also has a strong track record of
working with touring shows and productions to create learning opportunities.
What is the most fascinating part of your job? I have had the chance to work alongside some incredibly talented performers. I wouldn’t like to pick out a favourite, but one of the most inspirational groups is Cat Chapman’s all-male dance company, Legacy, whose passion and drive is incredible.
What do you like to do when you are not working? Theatre is a bit of a busman’s holiday for me. If I can get to the West End to see shows, I will. I also love seeing work being developed in other parts of the country. Some of the productions in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow are great, although that isn’t to play down the efforts being made in Norwich. I also organise events in my
What are your hidden gems in the city? There are so many. The area around the River Wensum often gets forgotten and yet is so beautiful. Elm Hill is like stepping back into the past, which I guess is why it is so popular with film-makers and photographers. Top of the list has to be The Lanes. Anything Brighton can do Norwich can do just as well!
Where are your favourite places to eat in the city? I am a bit of an Indian food junkie, so a favourite is The Merchants of Spice on Colegate.
The Coach and Horses on Little Bethel Street is also superb and has been ‘the theatre pub’ for generations; tasty tapas and a wide range of beer is guaranteed from Amy, Ant and their very friendly team. n

John Bultitude has been the senior communications officer at Norwich Theatre Royal for almost 10 years. He is part of a team of three people who help to spread the word about shows and activities at the venue via the media and social media. He lives just outside Norwich.
It mixes the cosmopolitan with a strong sense of community. The city is growing and changing, but not to the extent that it loses its personality. Actors and performers who tour here always say how much they like the atmosphere of the city.
