FESTIVE WOODBRIDGE 29 NOVEMBER
THURSDAY 22 NOVEMBER
SWITCHED ON! Head down to the brand new Cornhill for an evening of entertainment, raucous pantomime antics and Christmas lights aplenty throughout the town. There will once again be a traditional real Christmas tree from Elevedon Forest paid for by the businesses of Ipswich, this year the tree will be 10ft taller at a full 50ft! Arrive early to get the best spot – gates open at 4:30pm but beware, there is limited
capacity and gates will close when they have reached the limit. Along with the switch on, there are a number of activities and events planned to support the retailers in the town, and to encourage shoppers to come in to Ipswich. Late night shopping will commence on Thursday 22nd November, with many shops opening late into the evening for the Christmas shopping to begin in earnest. This will run every Thursday until 23rd December. www.allaboutipswich.com
The yuletide season in Woodbridge gets underway on Thursday 29 November, on the Market Hill, when the Christmas lights get turned on at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome, with live music, food and general festive celebrations on the square. Throughout the day the local shops will be adding Christmas touches to the shopping experience, and starting the festive count down.

GOOD LUCK TO... ANTONIO GIOVANNI
Fingers crossed for their artistic director, Antonio Palladino, who is in the running for Eastern Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards this November. It’s a great accomplishment to get so far in such a prestigious competition... we are rooting for you!
WOODBRIDGE THOROUGHFARE
Voting has now closed for the Great British High Street Awards so it’s not long to wait to see if Woodbridge’s Thoroughfare has won the coveted ‘Champion High Street’ category. High streets throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are judged on four pillars of success: Community, Customer Experience, Environment and Digital Transformation. Needless to say we think the Thoroughfare is a worthy winner!
NEVER TOO LATE! Jill Nina Willens, Suffolk resident of East Bergholt since 1966 has recently, at the age of 84, published a poetry book called The Girl in the Window. Originally it was just intended as a keepsake for the family but interest grew and it was finally self published. It’s a lovely book with a beautiful cover and reflects on everyday life and experiences. Over a 100 poems are arranged in nine themed sections covering countryside, humour, legends, life, children, fantasy, nature, reflections and family. With the illustrations it would make a lovely Christmas present. It will make you smile, reminisce, appreciate and contemplate life. It has had some highly recommended reviews, some who said they never thought they would say they liked poetry.

CHRISTMAS 2018
TALKING TREES HOW MANY TREES ARE SOLD EACH YEAR? The British Christmas Tree Growers Association estimates around seven million trees are bought each year. HOW OLD IS A TYPICAL FULL HEIGHT TREE? A typical 6 to 7 feet high Christmas tree is between 10 and 12 years old. Seed is collected from trees either in the wild or in specially selected seed orchards, sown in a nursery where the seedlings then grow for three to four years. The young plants are then planted by a grower and grown on for a further seven to nine years. WHICH IS THE MOST POPULAR VARIETY? About 80% of the trees sold are Nordmann Fir, around 10-15% Norway Spruce and the remainder are lesser known varieties. HOW DO I KNOW I’M CHOOSING A FRESH TREE? A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree but it is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off. HOW DO I KEEP MY TREE AT ITS BEST? When you get it home, it is advantageous if about half an inch is cut off the butt in order to open up the pores of the tree. The tree should be kept outside in a cool shaded place, standing in water, until it is required indoors. When the tree is brought indoors, mount it in a water-holding stand and place it away from direct heat, such as a radiator. Keep the container topped up with water every day; you will be surprised how much the tree drinks. WHEN CAN I GET ONE? Blackthorpe Barn

ON’T WORRY about Brexit, the coming recession, the end of your tan and the end of the world as we know it, Abba are back together so everything will be fine. Let’s look fabulous. It’s been a very long hot summer preceded by show stopping snowfall, so it’s really tricky for us retailers to get our buying right when our customers are affected by things so out of our control, and in our case we are making our buying choices up to 8 months ahead of the season. Part of the excitement of fashion is seeing the change of stock and moving our departments around. Customers visiting our stores are commenting on the lovely selection of colours in store this season, quite unusual for winter collections which are traditionally black, grey or navy. Shades of green are making a statement, with all the gorgeous hues of the aquamarine sea, as is pink and burnt orange. Prints are also high on the fashion agenda, especially an animal print, or a mix of contrasting prints on the same garment. The fashion looks have moved away from skinny this and bodycon that. The new looks are loose and baggy, chunky wide legged

cords chosen over skinny jeans. Coats are big blankets and the boyfriend jacket, cuddly knit, big cards and cosy layers are all important looks. Ankle boots are still king, with gorgeous new shoe-boot shapes for a more elegant look. And sparkles are everywhere and in everything! It’s amazing how the love of anything that twinkles is still so strong. From shoes to mascara, it seems we can’t do without shining. I suggest you dancing queen your way through the party season in a pair of silver ankle boots, cropped wide legged lurex trousers and a gorgeous silk blouse – It’s a great way to bring your wardrobe up to date, with
these key pieces you just can't go wrong. Now is also time to consider the annual dilemma of the Christmas gift. Getting it right can be a tricky business, you really need to be armed with some key information before you set off on that shopping mission. If you're confident of buying something personal, like shoes or clothes, make sure you know the size. Don't be drawn to something that looks like something the person already has, they probably have!
A
T FANNY & FRANK we have a new gift and homewares area in our stores with gorgeous cherubs, angels, ornamental crowns, home fragrance, throws, cushions and other gift ideas. It could be helpful to have a look around, you may well be inspired. With such unpredictable weather, you may be skiing your way through a snowscape, wading through torrential rain or wearing thermals and sunglasses, but whatever the elements throw our way, I do hope I see you over the festive season to wish you good cheer and a happy new wardrobe.

CHRISTMAS WRAPPED UP! BY PAMELA DAVIS
Otto d'Ame shaggy faux fur coat £277 Fanny & Frank
As the real cold weather starts to take its grip, its time to start thinking about our winter coats. Coats are arguably the most important part of any seasonal wardrobe. They serve a functional purpose, but crucially an on-trend coat can elevate your entire wardrobe in a single purchase. There’s simply no denying the power of great outerwear, as everyone at some point will have owned that single cover-up that kept us warm, boosted our mood on the greyest of days, and made a simple jeans, tee and trainer combo feel infinitely cooler, with minimal thinking.

Cake & Catwalk Time to shop wisely...
Although I don don’t totally buy into the whole Christmas present frenzy, I do enjoy finding all the lovely things for the shop, getting the deliveries, ripping open the boxes and filling the shop up with all the goodies. It’s a great time to try out new lines and indulge in my favourite accessory. Jewellery. I like it big and bold, unusual textures and materials. This year is no exception and I have lots to tempt you. I also have some snuggly animal inspired socks, mittens and gloves from Powder. They provide very stylish packaging so no need to gift wrap. The shop is bursting at the seams with gorgeous goodies. I am also a great believer in not over-spending and believe, if you shop wisely, you can buy the perfect gift that is unique and won’t cost a fortune. So shop early, shop wisely and shop local. Happy Christmas my lovelies. LYNN TURNER

Emma’s Florist on Nacton Road has been providing gorgeous flowers for all occasions for 15 years. But business is so good that owner Emma Felgate has opened a second shop in Ipswich, on St Peter’s Street, offering customers something out of the ordinary. “Our new shop is more shabby chic, traditional and quirky; very much in keeping with the historical area of the town,” says Emma. “We are focusing on big and blowsy flowers like hydrangeas and peonies, not the usual chrysanthemums or carnations! And we are using natural products like hessian rather than cellophane for wrapping. “There’s a fantastic range of festive things in the shop, something for everyone; lovely gifts, candles, decorations and door wreaths, which are all made by us in the shop. If you really want to stand out this Christmas, come and see us and we’ll create a unique bespoke wreath or table decoration just for you.”

DONALDS MAZDA OPENS STYLISH NEW SHOWROOM
T
his summer, Donalds Mazda completed their move to a newly built stateof-the-art showroom at Ipswich’s premier retail estate, Futura park. Featuring a spacious boutique showroom with a range of strategically placed feature lights, the L-Shape tiled floor layout allows for the full Mazda range of cars to be displayed whilst retaining a clutter-free environment. The design adopts Mazda’s latest brand identity, which takes inspiration from 21st century style. Aftersales customers will easily find the prominent bright white service counter which is overlooked by a large 3D Mazda emblem from behind, whilst

those looking for a new purchase can speak with sales advisors in relative privacy at desks without the feeling of being surrounded by noise and distraction. Large wall-mounted LCD televisions feature footage from the range on ‘Mazda TV’ whilst keeping customers informed with the latest news through a ticker at the bottom of the screen.
D
esigned with customer connection at the forefront, the stylish forecourt follows the showroom’s clean design – linking the inside and outside, whilst a larger workshop takes the total number
of servicing bays to five. The exterior of the showroom is mostly glass to showcase the cars from the outside, framed by aluminium beading which reaches up to the large chrome mesh ribbon which hugs the top of the building. The Mazda and Donalds signs are illuminated at night which combined with the ‘alwayslit’ showrooms, create a striking image outside of daylight hours. Visitors will also be pleasantly surprised at the ease of parking on site due to plenty of available spaces in front of the showroom – a obvious but important feature. ■ www.donaldsmazda.co.uk

“We hadn’t appreciated just how much Mum and Dad had accumulated over the years. The family were staggered at the sum and worried about the large Inheritance Tax bill we might receive”
Inheritance Tax – Residence Nil Rate Band MY PROBLEM: When Mum sadly died a little while ago, naturally, everything she owned was left to Dad. Dad’s health deteriorated after her death and, after just six months struggling to look after himself at home and a brief stint in a nursing home, poor Dad passed too. Of course, everything Dad inherited from Mum was tax-free due to them being spouses. What I hadn’t appreciated, however, is just how much Mum and Dad had accumulated over the years. Having found a number of papers referencing investments, coupled with the value of their house, I estimated that their estate was worth in the region of £850,000. My two brothers and I were staggered at this sum and worried about the large Inheritance Tax bill we might receive as a consequence. JOAN, SUFFOLK
48
HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
Having done a bit of research, I knew that we could take advantage of both Mum and Dad’s Inheritance Tax allowances at £325,000 each, allowing us a threshold of £650,000 tax-free. That still left a whopping £200,000 that I thought would be liable for tax, and my concern was that we were going to have to pay 40% of that. My first port of call was to speak to Barker Gotelee as I knew that they had Mum and Dad’s Wills. We obviously wanted to check the Wills and what needed to be done about them. With Dad having dealt with everything when Mum passed away, it wasn’t a process I was at all familiar with. Vanilla November/December 2018
REAL LIVES
I
made an appointment to see somebody in the Private Client Team and was put in touch with Ann-Marie Matthews. She was truly lovely. The death of a parent is clearly an emotional time and, with them having both passed within months of each other, it felt doubly difficult. She instantly put me at ease and I knew that I was in very caring, yet capable, hands. Whilst I was with AnnMarie, I asked if I could confirm with her that I had correctly understood the inheritance tax situation. Had we calculated it correctly? Was there anything we could do? Ann-Marie explained that there was, using the new Residence Nil Rate Band that has recently been introduced. Thankfully, Dad hadn’t sold his house when he went into care, so we were able to benefit from this. At present, in addition to the £325,000 per person standard Inheritance Tax Nil Rate Band, there is now a further allowance of £125,000 per person for the value of their main residence, providing a direct descendant is inheriting. Ann-Marie told us that this is set to increase again by £25,000 each year to a total of £175,000 by 2020, but, as we fell short of that, those changes wouldn’t have applied to us anyway. Mum and Dad’s house was worth around £300,000, whilst other assets such as cash and investments made up the remaining £550,000 of their estate. Ann-Marie said that with the two allowances of £325,000, plus the further
two new Residence Nil Rate Band of £125,000 each, my brothers and I would be able to inherit up to £900,000 without being liable for Inheritance Tax. Before speaking to Ann-Marie I had feared a tax bill in the region of £80,000, but thanks to her advice we found out that this was not the case. In addition to the Inheritance Tax advice, we knew that we would need guidance on how to get probate and then how to implement the terms of the Will, so were hugely grateful that Ann-Marie was able to help us with that too. With the support of her colleagues, she guided us through everything – securing the grant of probate,
winding up and making sure all of the duties under the Wills were carried out, even the house sale and distributing funds to the beneficiaries. Plus, of course, tax advice to ensure we paid the correct amount of tax, claimed all of the allowances we were entitled to and that all of the necessary forms were completed. I cannot tell you what a huge burden was lifted. Not only did it save us of a lot of headache, we would have paid £80,000 in Inheritance Tax completely unnecessarily. Whilst it’s been a very sad year, we were so grateful that Ann-Marie was there for us. Guiding us every step of the way.
We’re here to help We all need legal services from time to time. Whether you need advice or assistance relating to Wills, Deeds of Variation, tax or care fee planning, our specialists, including Ann-Marie Matthews and Peter Gooch, are on hand to help.

I
FIRST MOVED TO SUFFOLK 15 years ago and have grown to love the vast, open skies here. More recently, I have used this outside space as a chance to reflect on my career and to consider how I want to change my own working practices. I generally work alongside clients helping them understand the options available and then supporting them as those plans develop, being on hand as greater confidence and clearer insight influence the choices made. I believe the most satisfaction is found in collaboration, building something over time rather than simply setting up a product and moving on. So, earlier this year I established my own Wealth Management Practice. Having been in the industry for some time; the last ten years spent representing a global banking and investment brand, I was ready to make a change. I wanted to be able to offer clients the range of services available through bigger investment companies but n the a personal hands-on way, which a small local business can offer. Taking steps to consciously review our finances and effectively plan for things like retirement certainly seems to fall into the category of “we know we should, but we just don’t know where to start.” Too few of us seek advice about our options and we fail to make the most of our savings, our annual allowances, insurance policies or pensions. It is not because we don’t know we should,

“Taking steps to consciously review our finances and effectively plan for things like retirement certainly seems to fall into the category of ‘we know we should, but we just don’t know where to start’ ” but it is often easy to put these on the back burner. We know we should, we may even know why we should; but knowing is not the same as doing.
Y RESPONSIBILITY and that of my team is to help identify the changes which will provide greater financial stability now and, in the future, to help prioritise financial goals and move towards achieving them. Whether your aim is one of saving money or ensuring that you and your family are protected against unforeseen events; a discussion of your options is essential. We offer the chance to have an open and friendly conversation about any aspect of your finances which in turn can help to de-mystify the choices open to you. I am looking forward to contributing to Vanilla over coming issues and would ask that you contact us should you wish to discuss any aspect of our services or are interested in discussing any topic. ● The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. ELEMIS BIOTEC FACIAL
Join the revolution in facials: effective, results driven treatments that herald a turning point in beauty therapy
I
F THE WORD facial conjures up visions of gentle, luxurious, skin-perfecting tranquility, then you’re a bit out of date my friend. Thanks to a plethora of new technology and gadgetry, it seems the world of facials is getting serious. Welcome to the new era of high impact, skintransforming treatments and first on the list is the Elemis Biotec facial, newly available at The
56
Pink Shed salon in Brantham. Elemis has combined highpotency products, its unique hands-on therapy with the science of bio-electric technology to deliver a new generation of facials. There are seven Biotec facials to choose from – AntiWrinkle, Firming, Resurfacing, Radiance, Blemish Control, Sensitive Skin and Anti-pigment Brightener. Each uses a specific
cocktail of concentrated serums, plus a new 5-in-1 facial machine that offers a combination of ultrasonic, micro-current, oxygen and light therapy to lift, smooth, brighten or purify your skin, depending on your complexion needs. These individual technologies aren’t new of course, but what is, is combining them to create a unique and superior facial treatment. Vanilla November/December 2018
BEAUTY
Natalie Wood, owner of The Pink Shed tells us, “This is innovative skincare at its very best. I’ve spent the last two years looking into hi-tec facials – finding one that I can guarantee will be good for our customers. The Elemis Biotec treatments combine scientific expertise with the very best of our handson therapy, to offer something I genuinely believe delivers the best of both worlds.” WHAT’S INVOLVED?
After a skincare consultation – during which the therapist analyses your skin – you’re prescribed one of the seven facials. On the day we settled on the O2 Senstive Skin Soothing facial for me – a de-sensitising, anti-redness facial to help soothe and calm delicate skin. It was close call between that and the Radiance facial, which I’m determined to go back and try another day. First, my skin was cleansed with Pro-collagen Cleansing Balm followed by Ginseng Hydrating Toner. Then my therapist applied Skin Bliss capsules containing moringa oil and lavender to de-congest my skin. Then came the Gentle Rose Exfoliator with Moroccan rose and jojoba beads, removed with toner and warm mitts. Now it was on to the main part of the facial. Using an activator rich in Frankincense and natural anti-inflammatory Willowherb, and the hi-tec machine, my skin was infused with oxygen to encourage cellular restoration. This was
then followed by red light therapy with calming antioxidants that improve the skin’s ability to repair itself. If this is all sounding hightech, it’s because it was! But we finished up in familiar territory as a final layer of serum and moisturiser was applied at the end of the treatment to my calm and soothed skin.

Elemis Biotec Facials
DOES IT WORK?
Yes. I can happily report brighter, smoother, more evenlooking skin that felt pleasingly plump and dewy at the end of the treatment. The results lasted for days, so I felt I could go without my usual foundation. I will definitely go back when I need a brightening boost. Natalie is happy to report that they are getting great feedback from regular clients for their new Biotec system, with some clients claiming that they never want to go back to just a traditional facial. HOW MUCH?
A Elemis Biotec Facial costs between £70-£84.80 (depending on therapist and choice of facial). Each facial lasts for 60 minutes – a course of six is recommended with a treatment every three weeks. Undecided? Try a Biotec Taster Facial, which gives a 30-minute taster of any of the Biotec facials for £46.20. n FOR MORE INFORMATION on treatments, pricing and location visit their website: www.thepinkshedbeauty.co.uk

PROFHILO
The new discovery that combats facial ageing
N CASE YOU haven’t noticed, the beauty world is rife with injectable treatments. In fact, it’s predicted that by 2020, over 1.5 million people in the UK will have had Botox or fillers and it’s already possible to forgo the surgical scalpel for procedures that have previously required a hefty dose of anesthetic and months of downtime, instead opting for a swift injectable treatment to the same effect. The first of its kind, Profhilo® is a stabilised form of the miracle hydrating molecule hyaluronic acid. When injected, it stimulates

the skin’s natural synthesis of collagen for plumped and firmed up skin. Apparently, the revolutionary treatment is especially effective at treating those areas prone to laxity and sagging like the cheeks, neck, chest and décolletage. But Profhilo® isn’t just effective in the treatment of wrinkles and ageing skin – it also helps with radiance and hydration. This year, Profhilo® won best injectable product in Europe at the Aesthetic industry awards, making it the hottest new
product in facial aesthetics. And here in Suffolk, Profhilo® is fast becoming one of facial aesthetics expert, Dr Linea’s most popular treatments. “The most common complaint my patients present with is sagging and crepey looking skin. There have been other products on the market that aim to improve skin quality, but Profhilo® stands out from the rest, with the results speaking for themselves.”
D

product is Injected into key areas of the face, neck, chest, hands and décolletage. The stabilised hyaluronic acid slowly releases and spreads under the skin over several days, stimulating your body’s own production of collagen and elastin.” One month after the first treatment, you should notice improved skin quality and radiance. The treatment is then repeated to encourage more collagen production and continues working to result in glowing, firmer skin. It also attracts water to deeper layers of the skin, hydrating the skin, therefore skin tone, elasticity and radiance improves. Profhilo® has the highest concentration of Hyaluronic
acid for an injectable on the market and it is also the most biocompatible, meaning it is made from high grade natural hyaluronic acid without the addition of chemical crosslinking agents. This means the risk of adverse reactions is significantly reduced. Profhilo® can be used as a treatment on its own, but Dr Linea finds her patients like to combine Profhilo® with other treatments, such as dermal fillers. THE HYDRAFACIAL
® to see an improvement to the skin
The A-Listers favourite facial at Juliette John Aesthetics
M
aintaining skin health doesn’t need to be complicated. Just like many A-list celebrities and well known famous faces, we are increasingly turning to effective, non-invasive treatments that take up very little time yet give maximum results. Two new contenders have entered the ring in the fight against dull, lacklustre complexions – HYDRAFACIAL & PERK – giving results you usually associate with more invasive treatments. Clients undergoing the treatments report that their facial lines, wrinkles and brown spots have diminished, whilst pores and skin tone have become clearer and more defined. It sounds almost too good to be true, so we asked Juliette John to explain further.
HYDRAFACIAL®
The HydraFacial is essentially a relaxing six-step process (comprising of lymphatic drainage, cleansing and exfoliation, brightening agent, extraction, hydration and LED lighting), leaving skin with a healthy radiance that is further enhanced with every treatment. First, Lymphatic drainage is stimulated to increase circulation and aid in toxin elimination. Then the HydraFacial takes cleansing and exfoliation to the next level, removing dead skin cells and impurities. We then apply a gentle glycolic and salicylic solution to brighten and illuminate the skin. Then a

a REPOilRlT specially designed cocktail of antioxydants, peptides and hyaluronic acid is delivered into the dermis to plump and hydrate the skin. At the final stage, LED light is used to stimulate collagen production and reduce any areas of redness or irritation, so skin immediately looks more healthy and radiant. The HydraFacial is suitable for all skin types and can tackle a wide range of skin complaints and conditions. It can be performed weekly and monthly depending on your skin needs; when clients’ experience the HydraFacial difference, it becomes a must have treatment for maintaining beautiful, radiant skin. The treatment is totally noninvasive so perfectly safe with no downtime. The experience is very comfortable and clients are excited
immediately after treatment. PERK®
Perk is a new add on system that can enhance HydraFacial while delivering antioxidants and nutrients to your skin. Perk targets areas such as the lips and dark circles/ puffy eyes. Taking just 5 -10 minutes to administer, Perk and its take home serum (which helps prolong the treatment effects for up to a month) compliments the HydraFacial by focusing on the delicate areas around the lips and eyes. The lip treatment gently plumps your lips and locks in moisture, whilst the eye treatment brightens the delicate areas around the eye to reduce circles and puffiness. What makes Perk unique is that you get the double bonus of a professional treatment plus you get to take home the same vial used during your treatment to use at home, helping you to maintain your results and enjoy healthy, beautiful skin. Most patients see results immediately and the benefits are long-lasting. HYDRAFACIAL CHRISTMAS OFFER

3D LIPO
TRIE ED Fat freezing and sound waves – TEST it’s the latest beauty craze!
M
ANY of us will have tried to shift a few stubborn pounds at some point in our lives – but sometimes hitting the gym and watching what you eat just doesn’t seem to cut it. The most talked about treatment in recent years is 3D-Lipo, not least because of the number of celebs who use it to help them fight the flab. Here’s all you need to know about the nonsurgical cosmetic treatment. WHAT IS 3D LIPO AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
3D Lipo is a powerful nonsurgical approach to liposuction that claims to be able to reduce body fat by destroying fat cells. The 3D treatment involves four
64
different options and methods for destroying fat cells and improving the appearance of problem areas – Cavitation and Cryolipolysis for fat reduction, Radio Frequency for skin tightening and Dermology for cellulite reduction. Combining the treatments can mean less fat, tighter skin and less cellulite in the treated areas. Here’s how the system works: Cavitation uses ultrasound to rupture fat cells, turning the cells into liquid, which can then be carried away as waste. Cryolipolysis is when the fat cells are frozen. The extreme cold aims to destroy fat cells, which can then be “disposed of” by the body naturally in the weeks after the treatment.
Radio Frequency (RF) energy heats the layer of skin which contains the collagen fibres, causing these fibres to contract, as well as increasing the production of new collagen and elastin. This will tighten the skin for a smoother more youthful appearance. Dermology improves the appearance of skin with cellulite reduction by combining special vacuum suction and rollers. This works by increasing the blood supply and lymph circulation. Each method of treatment takes between 30-60 minutes and clients having the procedure are encouraged to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle to get the best results. For those who choose to have the treatment, results begin to become visible anywhere between two and six months and each treatment varies in price

FAT FREEZING: One of the 3D Lipo options which aims to reduce smaller pockets of hard to shift flab
with combinations and course options available. TRIED & TESTED
I was invited to try out a course of 3D Lipo at Ipswich clinic, Glow. After a full consultation with Amber it was decided what would be best for me would be a one-off ‘fat-freezing’ Cryolipolysis treatment on my stomach, and a course of a combination of Radio Frequency and Dermology for the upper and outer thighs, an area of concern for me because of cellulite. THE EXPERIENCE
Each method is quite different and depending on your pain threshold, either enjoyable or painful. It goes without saying, the fat-freezing was very cold, and after about five minutes the area was uncomfortable. But then numbness set in and for the rest of the session it became
November/December 2018 Vanilla
FROM START TO FINISH: My 8 week course of Dermology and Radio Frequency definitely reduced the appearance of cellulite and generally toned my thighs
more comfortable. The Radio frequency (RF) and dermology on the thighs was less comfortable. The skin heats up gradually with the RF, but gets incredibly hot. You have to rely on your therapist to keep the headpiece moving quickly, so the skin surface doesn’t get overheated. The vacuum roller I found the least comfortable, but at least that was the quickest treatment and over the weeks I found it more tolerable.
transform into red-carpet ready Angelina Jolie, I did have tauter thighs and former squidgy skin had morphed into firm toning, as if I’d spent some long hours in the gym. I’m still of the belief that natural is best, as with any fat loss treatment there is also the downside that, if you don’t change your diet and exercise habits, the fat will come back. But the 3D Lipo worked really well in improving skin texture and contour and made me feel great!
THE RESULTS
REVIEW: LAURA HALL
Surprisingly, the one-off cryolipolysis treatment gave me instant inch loss. The course on my thighs yielded less dramatic results, but having surrendered 3cm around my abdomen and 2cm from each thigh, I shed a total of 7cm while lying back and thinking of England. While I didn’t suddenly

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Pre-party Christmas tips from the team at Image
HOW DO I PREVENT LIPSTICK FROM BLEEDING?
HOW DO I APPLY FAKE LASHES?
Feathering and bleeding is most likely happen when the lips are dry, so keep those luscious lips moisturised! A lip primer will provide a smooth canvas. Then line your lips with a similar colour to your chosen lipstick this will prevent the colour from bleeding. Use a longer wearing lipstick as it will not wear off as quick. Don’t forget to pop a piece of tissue between your lips and blot of any excess! Top tip: Gently exfoliate your lips every week.
Size the lashes before you begin, you will need to make sure they are not too wide for your eye. Hold the strips up against your eyelid, and trim them down if needed. Apply a thin coat of mascara to your natural lashes then apply the lash glue to the eyelash strip and allow the glue to dry for a moment before applying. Place the strip on your eyelid, positioning it as close as possible to your natural lashes. Allow the glue to dry naturally – you can also use a cotton bud to gently press down on top of the lid to make sure it’s secure. Top tip: A lash conditioner applied nightly will give back the hydration that the lash glue takes.
HOW DO I DRAW A PERFECT WINGED EYE LINER?
Sketch out the liner by drawing a short line from the outer corner of the eye, as though following the curve of the lower lash line. Draw a line all the way across the upper eyelid, from the tear duct to the outer edge of the lower line. It helps if you pull the eye from the corner a little, not too hard though, to flatten the skin. Fill in any gaps between the outer point of the liner and the lash line, ensuring that you don’t leave any empty spaces. We all have good and bad eyeliner days and practice makes perfect! Top tip: Cotton buds with eye makeup remover is your best friend for correct mistakes quickly.
66
HOW DO I GET FAKE TAN AT HOME?
Depending on what product you are using, follow their guidelines as all tans have different developing times but to get a gorgeous streak-free tan just follow these simple rules. Prep is key! Exfoliate gently in the morning or evening before applying the tan. Only moisturise these areas: elbows, knees, ankle bone, feet and hands and do any hair removal the day before. For best results, apply the tan with a glove or mitt. Let your tan dry before dressing (tans can rub off on clothes bed sheets etc). When washing off after the developting time, use warm water and no shower gel and pat yourself dry with a towel. Top tip: Using a body moisturiser every day will prolong the life of your tan. n Vanilla November/ December 2018

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective The Pressure of Christmas
Here we are again – Christmas time. Perhaps the only time of year that we strive to get perfect... the perfect gift, house, meal, jumper, day... The pressure on social media and constant comparison to the people in the ads all adds to this unnerving stress. Slow down a minute. Stop and think how YOU would like your Christmas to be? What would YOU like to eat and do? Who would YOU like to see? Yes, Christmas is about others, but those that have worked with me will know that I advocate the ‘airline school’ of philosophy – when travelling with young children one puts one’s own oxygen mask on first. It’s my belief that life is like that too.

I covet and encourage self-care enormously. If you are happy and less stressed, everyone will know. So I suggest that you give yourself enough time too. Continue whatever healthy habits you do – they make you feel good already. Try and keep each Christmas prep activity in the fun zone. Christmas wrapping, for example, can be seen as a chore but when the gifts are brought, set aside an evening and do the wrapping with Christmas music/ film playing in the back ground, tree lights twinkling and a seasonal beverage. On a different note – if there are negative people/ family in your life, limit the amount of time you spend with them, if you have to see them at all. Work out what is best for you... bearing in mind we have to only be good enough and not perfect. Seasons Greetings to you all!

Roasted Sutton Hoo Chicken with clementine, herbs and nutmeg SERVES 4
1 large Sutton Hoo Chicken (1.7kg - 2kg) 60g sourdough breadcrumbs 75g butter, at room temperature 20g flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 8 sprigs of fresh thyme A handful of fresh sage leaves, washed and finely chopped Three or four clementines Fresh nutmeg Sea salt & black pepper to season 2 tbsps Hillfarm's rapeseed oil 2 sticks of celery 1 large white onion 2 carrots 2 bay leaves Fresh thyme Three cloves of garlic, unpeeled 150ml white wine 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
1 Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Remove any string from your chicken and with a sharp knife slash the drumsticks and thighs four times, making fairly deep and long incisions. 2 Put the butter and breadcrumbs in a mixing bowl. Grate over the rind of the clementines and add in the herbs. Mix it all together and add a good grating of nutmeg and season with sea salt and black pepper. 3 Using your fingers, gently push
78
Yes Chef!
A great twist on traditional roast chicken between the skin and the breast of the chicken to loosen the skin. Take a quarter of the stuffing and push it gently under the skin and over the breast. Do the same with the other side and then stuff the remaining mixture into the slits of the legs and thighs, pushing under the skin where possible. 4 Rub butter over the top of the chicken skin and season. 5 Chop celery, onion and carrot into chunks and place in a large roasting pan with garlic cloves, bay leaves and thyme sprigs. Sit the chicken on top and drizzle over a little rapeseed oil. 6 Pour the wine around the chicken and add a splash of water. Cut the clementines in half and insert two or three into the cavity of the chicken along with more thyme or sage. Tuck the remaining clementines around the chicken. Roast for 10 minutes then reduce to 180ºC and roast for a further hour. To check if
cooked, pierce the thickest part of the thigh and if still pink, put back for another 15 minutes. 7 Remove from the oven and leave to rest for about 20 minutes in a warm place. 8 Strain the remaining liquid into a separator jug and discard the fat. Return juices to the roasting pan, with the vegetables and heat. Add 250ml of chicken stock and simmer until reduced and syrupy. Squeeze the juices from the clementine into the jus. Taste and add seasoning along with a tablespoon of soy sauce. 9 Finally, carve the chicken into thick chunks, so that everyone gets a good piece of breast, stuffing and a drumstick or thigh. Serve with braised barley and green beans. ■ For more information on Sutton Hoo Chicken or more recipe ideas visit www.suttonhoochicken.co.uk

ARABELLA REEVE
Arabella Reeve has been providing the highest level of bespoke and personal catering for over 10 years, creating food that not only looks beautiful but tastes amazing. Her talent for cooking delicious and memorable food for weddings, parties and events has attracted some of the highest profile clients, including the Queen and other royal families from around the world, plus the rich and famous. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER HIGH-END CATERERS?
Quality and attention to detail are at the forefront of everything we do, and creating food with a ‘wow’ factor that tantalises and excites is our mission for every event. Developing close relationships with our clients is very important, nothing is too much trouble for us and it’s our aim to ensure they receive the perfect visual and eating experience every time. WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS ‘IN’ FOR WEDDINGS AND PARTIES?
Good question, and everyone is different. People are generally more sensitive to dietary requirements these days, so we do a lot of vegan and vegetarian events. Street food is very trendy
80
at the moment; big flavours, hands on and great for sharing. Themes are big too, we recently did a Stars Wars menu for a wedding where all the dishes were named after the characters. Decorating dishes with edible flowers to complement wedding colours is also something we are doing more often, and it looks stunning. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD FOR THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS PARTY?
Something informal and fun you can share, buffet style
or canapés with some great twists on traditional seasonal food that everyone loves; such as cranberry glazed cocktail sausages, caramelised onion and brie palmiers, star-shaped parmesan shortbreads with tomato salsa, and honey roasted chestnuts. WHAT KIND OF FOOD DO YOU ENJOY COOKING THE MOST?
Canapés are what I love to do the most. They always give the opportunity to create delicious mouthfuls of food that look beautiful. YOU ALWAYS USE LOCAL INGREDIENTS WHERE YOU CAN. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITES AND WHY?
I don’t think I could pick a favourite. Living in Suffolk we are lucky enough to have an abundance of suppliers that produce amazing products, whether it’s the superb selection of local smoked meats and fish, or unusual condiments. ■ Turn to page 82 for one of Arabella’s Christmas recipes. Yes Chef!
An easy and fun recipe from chef Arabella Reeve – great for getting the kids involved
Arabella’s Chocolate Salami 300g good quality chocolate (chocolate orange is ideal) 100g unsalted butter 150g golden syrup 250g amaretti biscuits (or more kid-friendly Lotus biscuits)
82
1 Put the biscuits in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin. 2 Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a bowl over boiling water. Once everything has melted take it off the heat and add the biscuits and anything else you fancy, like nuts (65g) or glacé cherries (100g). 3 Cover the bowl and place in the fridge for 20-30 minutes, so it’s just firm enough to shape. 4 Place two pieces of clingfilm on the work surface with one edge overlapping, so you have a large clingfilm covered surface.
5 Remove mixture from the fridge, tip the contents onto the middle of the clingfilm, and using your hands mould into a salami log around 30cm long. 6 Cover the log completely with the clingfilm and then firmly roll it to make a smooth cylindrical shape. Twist both ends of the clingfilm and knot as close to the salami as you can. 7 Put the salami into the fridge overnight to firm up. Slice when set and enjoy! Griff Rhys Jones Comedian and Presenter
My East Coast Life Griff Rhys Jones, comedian, presenter and producer and long-time resident of Suffolk, is returning to the county to give a performance in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). You’ve had a house in Holbrook since 1984, how did you come to choose to live in Suffolk? I looked everywhere. I dreamed of a place by an estuary or river. After two or three years and a few disappointments I got to Markwells one day in June. I recall the hollyhocks. I had been looking further north. But I have never regretted choosing Holbrook bay. Will you be spending Christmas/New Year in Holbrook? We never do Christmas anywhere else. A muddy walk is as essential as turkey. I had to be in London for the millennium.
I have another boat elsewhere and only one bum. How do you rate the Suffolk sense of humour?! The Suffolk sense of humour is drier and crisper and fruitier than you might expect. It’s like a Suffolk wine – not as rare as you might think.
Must have been a play or something. Felt wrong. Do you and your family have good memories of holidays here? I was brought up with Suffolk as the great Eldorado. It was the adventure destination after what felt like a perilous sea passage from West Mersea. Never disappointed. Still doesn’t. You’re passionate about sailing, do you still get time out on the local rivers? Alas no. The little boat is repaired and ready to go. But
Any favourite local haunts? Too many. I can’t get around them all in a good year. I often take my mum to The Unruly Pig just north of Woodbridge. They are welcoming.
