ith 62 restaurants confirmed, this year’s Norfolk Restaurant Week is a food lover’s fantasy. As in previous years, each restaurant will offer a special menu of either 2 courses for £10 and 3 for £15 or 2 courses for £15 and 3 for £20, from October 30th - 10th November (excluding weekends). There are no vouchers or codes required, however organisers do recommend booking. “The event has become hugely popular over the last five years, and menus, which are now available to view online, are much anticipated. The most popular places fill up quickly, which is why we always encourage people to book well in advance” says founder and organiser Martin Billing. Once again there are some firm favourites on the coast, such as The Lifeboat, Thornham, The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe and The Crown, Wellsnext- the-Sea, all of which have supported the event from the beginning. Newbies this year include The Hunworth Bell, near Holt, Strattons Hotel, Swaffham and The Boars, Spooner Row. With the expansion to the whole of the county, organisers are also very pleased to add some Norwich restaurants to the bill. These include, Warwick St Social, The Black Horse, Jive Kitchen & Bar, Yellows Bar & Grill and Orford Flat Iron, who will be newly opened in time for the event. Ben of Farmyard Restaurant on St Benedicts Street, who are also taking part says: “We were really chuffed to be approached by Norfolk Restaurant Week. It’s a great concept, and their ethos is to support good quality, independent restaurants. There are some really amazing places to eat Farmyard in St Benedicts in Norwich, an event like this, not only celebrates great food and hospitality, but helps showcase the best the city has to offer.”

FperIsoTnality T H G I R E H T r u e to match yo Finding a fram Oculus have been a leading contact lens specialist in the heart of Norwich since 1996. At the beginning of this year they relocated to 16 All Saints Green, opposite John Lewis, so that they could offer the same high level of personal service to spectacle wearers that they’ve always given to contact lens wearers. Jeff Jacobs is proud of the huge range of high quality frames that he has personally sourced from all over Europe, and which are unique to Norwich. At Oculus they encourage you to try on as many frames as possible. “People mistakenly think they should have a certain shape or colour, whereas
in truth it seems to be more to do with personality and sometimes you just need to try on lots of frames until you find the look that’s best for you,” explains Jeff. Oculus also want your specs to look good for their whole life, which is why they give all specs they sell a six monthly service for the lifetime of the frame. If you want to see what they have to offer, do pop in and see them as they do love to show off their glam frames!

BY SUSIE PRITCHARD ow that Summer is drifting away and a chill is creeping into the evening air, it’s time to layer up your nightwear and loungewear as you would your day wear! No need to stop wearing pretty colourful things, instead grab a vintage peignoir set and slip a matching silky robe on top of your night gown or go for a cute baby doll set, something frilly for when you get chilly! Vintage robes, kimonos or dressing gowns are perfect cover ups for the cooler weather and a cute little bedjacket is just the thing for breakfast in bed on a crisp weekend morning.

Make sure you wear the colours that really suit you. Your “WOW” colours! The wrong colours will make you look tired, run-down and older. The right colours will make your skin looks radiant, bright and therefore younger. Red is the hottest colour of the season and primary red is the only colour that suits everyone. Different seasons have different reds that suit them: Summer palettes suit cherry and coral red; Autumns glow in rust or brick reds; Winters shine in scarlet and carmine, and Springs look gorgeous in geranium and poppy red. Team red with a neutral such as grey, navy, black, cream, beige, tan or white to look effortlessly stylish, but remember to choose the right red and neutral! Once you know your palette of colours, creating great colour combinations is simple. Summer and Autumn palettes create younger looks with colours which blend and harmonise with each other. Try wearing different colours in the plum/amethyst family together for Summers and for Autumns try moss, olive and lime greens together. Winter and Spring look wonderful in high contrast looks from their palettes, creating a more youthful appearance. Winters could try adding Chinese bue to standard navy and white and Springs can add a youthful splash to their look with this season’s on-trend true red teamed with their neutrals. Use confidence to anti-age your wardrobe! Ooze confidence and focus on your best assets by drawing attention to them. If you have a lovely waist, then emphasise that with a beautiful, flattering statement belt. Or if you have lovely long legs then try some skinny jeans to elongate those legs even more! Unflattering trends won’t do you any favours. Aim for sensational and stylish instead. Look good to feel good. Revitalise and revalue yourself through colour and style.

IAMONDS are a girl’s best friend... and they’re probably popular with a few boys as well! But there are so many other gorgeous types of gem that give you more bang for your buck and pack an equally stunning punch! Albrow & Son’s pink-rendered building on All Saints Green is a Norwich icon, and here the choice of jewellery is second to none. They are probably best known for their antique collection of rings, bracelets, pendants and much more, a brightly-coloured and eyecatching array that never fails to impress. Less well known is their Exclusive collection, a range of gorgeous, one-off Victorianinspired pieces which Albrow make themselves using loose gems sourced from all over the world – some of them unusual varieties that most people will not be familiar with. “Each of the pieces we make is unique, and we source gems October/November 2017 Vanilla
that are completely natural and untreated, unlike those used in contemporary jewellery making,” explains Richard Albrow. “We know exactly where each gem comes from and there are some very beautiful varieties that are less valuable than, say, a diamond or sapphire, but they are just as stunning and customers can buy a statement piece with a larger stone. The majority of our pieces are rings, but we also make earrings and pendants. “Many people will not have
heard of many of the gems we work with. Tourmaline is a gem that comes from Afghanistan or Zambia and it can be pink, green, canary, or the very popular watermelon, which has a green outside and pink interior. “We are currently very exited about an extremely rare Sapphire from Sri Lanka, called a Padparadscha, which has come into our possession for the first time. It’s a beautiful peach colour and we have used it to create a fabulous threestone ring. It’ll be for sale on our website very soon. “Peridot is also a very popular gem from Burma. It comes in a variety of greens, and its beauty is that it’s a very big stone, which makes it perfect for making striking rings. “Another gem we use for large statement jewellery is Citrine, from the Congo, a yellow to deep orange stone. It was used a great deal in antique jewellery making, and in the 60s, because of the large stone. The largest Citrine we have is 65 carats, which is about 1.5 inches across. “Tanzanite is also very popular. This vibrant deep violet blue gem from Tanzania was only discovered in the 1960s and we use it to make a range of very nice pieces.” So if you think a gorgeous stoned ring or necklace is beyond your pocket, think again and take a look at Albrow’s Exclusive collection. 10 All Saints Green, Norwich 01603 622569 www.albrowjewellers.com

“When you first start out, you may be taking on the lion’s share of work yourself but as the business grows, so will the need to delegate some of the work. ”
How to set up your own business MY QUESTION: I have decided to take the step of turning my hobby into a business. Although I’m confident in my skills, I’m unsure where to start with the legal aspects. What words of advice would you offer to a potential new business owner?
44
Setting up your own business can be a daunting task. Spending time considering the following at the outset can help save time and stress: STRUCTURE
Many people choose to go into business as sole traders and then incorporate into limited companies further down the line. There are numerous tax and legal benefits to running your business through a limited company and changes to the Companies House website, which now has an online service, mean that the administrative burden is easier to manage.
If you choose to operate your business through a limited company, your personal liability (for example if you are unable to pay creditors) will be limited. That said, you are likely to find (often when renting a property or borrowing money) that you will be asked to give a personal guarantee. You should always give careful consideration to such a request. If you do decide to run your business through a company, you must ensure that when you enter into any agreements with customers, creditors or anyone else, you do so in the name of the company and not in your personal capacity. Vanilla October/November 2017
REAL LIVES TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If your business will be selling goods or services, the terms on which you sell will be crucial. You should consider, amongst other things, your credit terms, your liability and whether a retention of title clause would assist you. If you are contracting with consumers, there are specific laws and regulations which you must follow, as consumers are automatically given more rights than business customers. If contracting with another business, you should always look to complete a sale or contract for services on your own terms. However, a business customer may (particularly if they are a larger company) insist on using their own terms. If they do so, you should carefully read the terms before entering into the contract. There are complex rules regarding whose terms are being used, which involves looking at who sent the last set of terms before the contract was entered into, and you need to be aware of this. BRANDING
For many businesses, their name and logo are a major trading asset. Whilst copyright exists without the need to register a particular name or logo (thereby offering some protection), a registered trade mark gives stronger protection for your brand. Registering trade marks can be expensive, and so it may be something that you consider in the future when you know that the business is doing well. At the outset, you should carry out a check of the trade mark register, which can be done at www.ipo.gov.uk. This will ensure that you are not infringing anyone else’s trade mark with your logo or October/November 2017 Vanilla
trading name. You should also check the Companies House website using the WebCheck service. This allows you to search for companies who may already be using the name you have chosen. A simple online search is also beneficial. You do not want to find yourself in the position where you have already started building up a reputation, only to find that you face a legal challenge and are forced to rebrand. WEBSITES
You may decide to advertise and sell your product over the internet and indeed, many companies choose to do so as a more cost effective way of advertising and trading. The first step will, for most, be contracting with a web developer to build the site. You need to check the contract with them carefully and be sure that you have the necessary rights to run the site and will take ownership of it once it has been built. You will also need to give consideration to the legal requirements, which include having privacy and cookie policies, as well as terms of use documents
and displaying certain business details. If you are selling online (or over the telephone) then you will be covered by the Consumer Contracts Regulations, which give consumers additional rights, including a right to cancel the contract and receive a full refund. INSURANCE
Insurance is very important and in some circumstances, a legal requirement. You should speak to an insurance broker about what type of insurance might be required. BANKING
Many banks offer start-up packages to new businesses. These can include training sessions on how to manage your accounts and other administrative matters. EMPLOYEES When you first start out, you may be taking on the lion’s share of work yourself but as the business grows, so will the need to delegate some of the work. You should seek specialist advice on the practicalities of taking on employees. ■

or most of us Christmas food is a huge part of the festive season and something we look forward to all year. What could be better – a moist tender turkey, goose, duck, gammon or rib of beef – served with all the trimmings including locally grown sprout stalks! If this has got your taste buds tingling, then you will love City Farm Shop, at Notcutts, Norwich. This wonderful farm shop works closely all year with local farms to source only the finest produce such as meats, vegetables, savoury pies and cheeses, and is a superb place to shop for all your festive food. Each year City Farm Shop holds a Christmas Food Fair & Turkey Tasting to enable everyone to come and try all the delicious foods they sell in a festive atmosphere, and preorder everything they need for the big event. This year it will be October/November 2017 Vanilla
held on Saturday 11 November from 10am to 4pm. City Farm Shop owner Diane Meadows, says: “Supermarket shopping at Christmas can be a big headache, and the stress and queues can really take the shine off what should be a happy time. At City Farm Shop we can provide everything you need, from breakfast croissants and pastries through to a supper tray full of Norfolk cheeses, locally made pork pies and sausage rolls and chutneys. All under one roof, the quality is second to none – it’s all local, and we are definitely a no-stress zone! “Our tasting fair is a great opportunity for people to try our range of locally-produced ham, sausages, gammon, handmade quiches and pork pies, cheese, and our free range Norfolk Black Turkey and Norfolk Bronze Turkey. We will have plenty of Winbirri wine, Norfolk beers, ciders and gins for you to try too.
It’s always a very popular and fun day. You will be able to order all your Christmas meats, pies and sausage rolls at the food fare. “This is a very friendly place to shop and our team works hard to ensure every customer is happy. Price is important too, and we know that like-for-like we are cheaper than leading supermarkets.” If you are stuck for gift ideas, a delicious Christmas food hamper from City Farm Shop is the perfect solution. “You can create your own bespoke hamper from anything we have in the shop,” says Diane “This could be jams and chutneys, coffee, cheeses, biscuits, local wine and beer.” That’s certainly one Christmas present I won’t be taking back! ■ Notcutts Garden Centre, Daniels Rd, Norwich NR4 6QP t: 01603 507343 www.cityfarmshop.co.uk

Art lover Polly Miller, who formerly worked as Director of International Marketing for record label EMI, makes no bones about the fact she personally likes ‘unusual and curious things to hang on her wall.’ However, when she decided in 2012 to leave London to pursue her passion for art by opening a gallery first in Church Street, Cromer, and then a second in St Giles, Norwich, she was unequivocal about ensuring the art she sells is above all ‘good art.’ She was equally determined to ensure customers are greeted
50
warmly, made welcome and put at ease. “We really emphasise being friendly, open and helpful,” said Polly. “It’s our absolute mantra. The quality of what we offer is important, but so too is our price point, therefore, we have something to suit all purses.” IN THE FRAME
In realising her dream of running her own business, Polly nailed a new skill of her own. “To make it viable, I knew I would need to offer high quality framing so I retrained and framing is now a key part of our business,” she explains. As part of taking care of her customer’s framing requirements, Polly listens carefully to their needs and advises on what can be delivered within an appropriate price range. There is a diverse range of creatives, including artists,
jewellery makers and creators of objets d’art, displaying works at her galleries. Polly said: “A lot of the art is locally focused, but not necessarily done by local artists.” However, one of her top-selling artists is local painter Ruth Bunnewell, whose quintessential Norfolk big skies and landscapes are hugely popular. PUNKTASTIC
Polly has staged many exhibitions, and next month, joining in with the revival of Norwich’s punk scene, she prepares to present a series of photographs taken by famous punk photographer Sheila Rock. “Sheila is a friend of mine. I have known her for nearly 30 years from working at EMI,” she explained. The exhibition already seen in London, Paris and Berlin, featuring 26 images of punk rock stars including the Clash and the Sex Pistols, will open at the Norwich gallery on November 10th. ■ For more information visit www.thegallerynorfolk.co.uk or call 01603 761900.

Audi SQ5 M
Y LUNCH CLUB chums agree: they don’t need a vehicle capable of mountaineering which blocks out the sun when it pulls alongside at the lights and requires a fuel tanker permanently parked in the stack yard. What they need is a practical motor, space to load shopping, friends, family or luggage for a jaunt to the highlands. Enter the Audi SQ5! With the Audi SQ5 you get all those needs catered for but with a lot of features to set this apart from any pretenders to the throne. The front face is unmistakably Audi with the six-sided grille and meaningful stance – the styling is classy! Going anywhere won’t take long either. With 0-60 mph times of a little over five seconds, this Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) will wipe the smile off many a hot hatch boy-racer’s face! But it can do this in supreme comfort with the ability to also return very
reasonable fuel economy. The oft-quoted strap line ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ is most apt. The car simply bristles with the most modern industry leading technology. There are driver aids aplenty of which one may never be aware. Where it does show is in the way all the controls are intuitive in use and positioned exactly where they should be. The “virtual cockpit” can put all the important information in line of sight for the driver. For example the sat-nav route can be displayed on the dash rather than on the central display screen. Parking assist and sensors all round, and auto city braking save on dings and dents. Safety rating is class

Audi SQ5 Fact File Mpg: 34 mpg (combined) OTR price: from £51,200 Comfort: ★★★ ★★ Economy: ★★★ Class: ★★★★★ Verdict: SUV with quality, style and speed leading too. This means living with the SQ5 is easy. Audi’s smart phone interface connects your phone to the car’s systems. The multi function steering wheel is a treat and is very tactile. And talking of treats, the motorized tailgate is so handy! I also like the storage facilities at hand wherever one is seated. Of course the feel of quality simply oozes from the interior trim and the seats, there’s no mistaking inherent quality! If you’re thinking of a performance car suitable for town, country and motorway, the Audi SQ5 has to be a contender. With so many features, it’s good to know the fully trained staff at Robinsons Audi can explain them all and their benefits over one of the best coffees I ever had in a car showroom! ■

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS... SALT THERAPY? Salt therapy is a modern holistic method that mimics the natural microclimate of salt mines. This is achieved by the use of a special device – a Halogenerator – which grinds salt into a fine powder and then disperses dry salt aerosol into a room. It controls the concentration of aerosol and the size of salt particles. It is so fine it looks like a mist. Dry salt therapy is 100% natural, effective and safe. It can be used in combination with current medications and treatments to provide relief of symptoms of a variety of upper and lower respiratory conditions and skin ailments. Like a breath of sea air... literally! In clinical tests salt therapy has proven effective at relieving conditions such as colds, flu, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, hay fever, COPD and emphysema. Norfolk Salt Therapy in Attleborough has Norfolk’s first dry salt therapy cabin. Cabin sessions last 20 minutes, can accomodate up to three people and cost only £25 per

uch as I love a bit of nail art, sometimes a girl just needs to look groomed. Especially if you’re working in a traditional office, or in a bank, or behind the fish counter, or have the kind of boss/ customers who will probably not get the huge genius of your pom pom and sequin skills. Times like these call for the perfect work-a-day nail. If you haven’t tried a gel manicure yet – well, why not? Try it once, never go back. Gorgeous nails that look and feel just like your own (not like acrylics), don’t ruin your natural nails and just last and last. Expect a good month of mani heaven – these bad boys can withstand everything from touch typing, pulling out staples, gutting fish, or whatever your work happens to throw at you. When it comes to natural nails, Jessica Cosmetics is considered a world leading brand, with a range of Jessica nail products to achieve and maintain naturally beautiful nails. Jessica GELeration is a high shine, chip resistant, soak-off gel nail polish which lasts for about 21 days.

3D-HIFU The revolutionary
non-surgical face lift?
3
D-Skinmed HIFU, the “non surgical face and neck lift” is the latest craze to take the beauty world by storm. We visited Amanda Brown at Aromaesthetics anti-ageing and laser clinic in Wymondham, who is extremely passionate about the benefits of this ‘revolutionary’ non-surgical facelift treatment. The clinic specialises in advanced technology beauty treatments, including those to help with inch loss, cellulite removal, body contouring and reduction of lines and wrinkles. Amanda explains in detail about the state-of-the-art 3D Ultimate machine they have invested in and its capabilities. She is convinced the HIFU Face Lift is without question, the world’s most advanced, non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. Attracting new clients from across the county, popular problem areas for treatment include brow lifting, jowl line lifting, nasolabial fold reduction
60
Before
and periorbital wrinkle reduction. WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?
Only one treatment is needed to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Results develop over the course of 2-3 months, with continued improvement for up to 6 months and lasting approximately 2-3 years. Ideal candidates for a the HIFU Face Lift are those with the early signs of loose, sagging, wrinkled or even sun damaged skin (that’s most of us over 40 then!). With no cuts to the skin and no potential for scarring, it is easy to see why this is fast becoming many celebrities facelift of choice. THE TECHY STUFF
The HIFU Face Lift uses high intensity focused ultrasound to stimulate the skins deep support structures. This single session treatment utilises the body’s own ‘wound healing response’ that results in formulation of new collagen that in turn lifts, tones and tightens the skin. THE EXPERIENCE
After 6 months
I had the eye lift (£179) – the treatment was not painful, only mildly uncomfortable. According to Amanda, it depends on how high you can tolerate the settings for heat and vibration, and some areas of the face are more sensitive than others. The eye area only took about 20 minutes to treat, a full face would take an hour. THE RESULTS
There was absolutely no downtime for me with this treatment. In the weeks that followed the treatment, my eye area appears lifted, firmer and toned while fine lines and wrinkles have visibly reduced as the skin has tightened. Making a return visit to have my lower face and jowls treated is definitely on my wish list! 3D-HIFU treatments start at £175 for an Eye Lift. A full face and neck is £750. 13. Back to Earth
How to decorate with earthy tones ● If you’re clueless about what an earth tone
actually is, it’s a pretty simple concept. Think of it as a spectrum of colours inspired by Mother Nature herself. Every colour you see outside – everything from dark brown tree bark to the greenest of grass – they’re all apart of the earth tone family. ● Earth tones have a tendency to create a dark space. Make sure there’s plenty of light to avoid an overly dramatic look and feel. ● If you’re unsure about how to mix earth tones with brighter colours, use accessories to test it out. With cushions, you can easily see which colours work, and which ones don’t. ● In your search for the right colours, keep in mind that brown is only the beginning. If you’re stuck on which shades to choose, remember your options are endless. Khaki, clay, wheat, espresso, burnt orange, gold, honey, terracotta, auburn, caramel, rust and chocolate are some variations of brown that might pique your interest. ● Earth tones go far beyond the brown family, though. Shades of green fall into the category too. From lime and olive to teal and mint, going green is the natural alternative for a perfectly earth-toned room. ● When using all earth tones in a single space, it’s important not to wash the room out. Avoid a bland theme by mixing different textures, patterns and details. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk. ● Paint and wallpaper available through Paint & Paper in Norwich: www.paint-paper.co.uk

V PROFILE
BERRYS & GREY
T
HE WORLD OF Berrys & Grey, in The Arcade, is a treasure trove of beautiful, unusual and luxurious housewares, gifts and finishing touches for the home. Owner and creator Nicole Pugh (pictued right) is quite the style icon, and for the past year she and her equally talented team have been helping people to create their own special spaces by offering an interior design and free creative sourcing service. “Our interior design projects are often small, perhaps transforming a dressing table area in a bedroom,” Nicole says. “We can help find a person’s specific style and create a mood board to explore different colours, tones and textures. “We have designed some very exciting spaces recently, such as a Scandinavian-inspired office and games room for one of a list of high profile clients. And we are also working on a number of commercial projects, including Delia Smith’s Yellows restaurant at Carrow Road.”
74
The Berrys & Grey creative sourcing service is proving equally popular. “If customers have something specific in mind but can’t find exactly what they want in our shop, we will scour the internet and put together a portfolio of similar items to save them shopping around,” Nicole says. “We know where to source even the most unusual items.”
C
USTOMER CHARLOTTE Williams says: I have a small obsession with Berrys & Grey, from recreating what’s in store in my home to waiting for their deliveries to arrive. My whole home is dressed with the store and their customer service is second to none; always offering me ideas and advice.'' As if this wasn’t enough on Nicole’s stylish plate, she also runs beginners and advanced chalk paint workshops in Swan Lane. “Beginners can learn techniques such as chalk paint, craquelure, crackle glaze, terapiano, stenciling, sanding, wax and varnish.
“In the advanced workshop we take a more in-depth look at chalk paint, plus advanced techniques such as art medium, distressing, ageing printing, marbling, decoupage, gold leaf guild with copper and gold leaf. The classes are all small, informal and great fun!” The next workshops will be held in January 2018. It’s clear that Berry’s & Grey is hands-on style, elegance and chic at its finest. ■

As part of a two-tiered extensive branding and refurbishment programme, the much loved deli will have a much larger footprint, with more space to stock your favourite local food and drink. There’s a dedicated wine and spirits area and a bar where you can enjoy a glass of wine or two and sample tapas from the cheese and cold meats from the deli. CRAIG ROBINSON
We met with Craig Robinson, Executive Head Chef at Delia’s Canary Catering, to find out more about how he started working in catering and what he loves the most about his job at Norwich City Football Club. CRAIG, HOW DID YOUR CAREER BEGIN?
I started work at Drayton Wood Hotel at weekends whilst at school. From there I attended Norwich City College and then went on to work in London at The Savoy Hotel. I returned to East Anglia to the Swan at Southwold before becoming a Sous Chef at Delia’s Canary Catering back in 2004. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
The diversity of the job, catering for 1500 people on a match day and successfully serving around 10,000 plated meals a month October/November 2017 Vanilla
during the season. The whole year varies between seasons and is a very exciting place to work. WHAT ARE THE MOST CHALLENGING PARTS OF YOUR ROLE?
Converting traditional recipes to the modern day dietary requirements. All the dishes we serve are to Delia’s recipes and we have to make sure we calculate the scaling up of dishes to ensure the dish is served and tastes as it was originally written by Delia herself. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT THS YEAR?
Catering for our biggest summer event to date. Take That coming here was a huge statement for Delia’s Canary Catering, Norwich City Football Club and indeed the whole city. Norwich is no longer the sleepy country city that perceptions once were of it, in fact it’s a very vibrant and fast
growing community that is keen to show the UK that as a city we can do it as good, if not better, than the rest. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EVENT TO DATE...
My favourite and most enjoyable event was travelling to London to take over a restaurant to cater for 70 high level guests for the industry launch of Delia’s ‘How to Cheat at Cooking’, which was a huge challenge but one we delivered with style. As well as this single event, I always cherish the End Of Season Dinner which has coincided with three promotions in my time here... this is always a memorable event night. ■ Delia’s Canary Catering, Carrow Road, Norwich NR1 1JE t: 01603 218704 e: canary.catering@canaries.co.uk www.deliascanarycatering.co.uk

was looking forward to dining at Sprowston Manor’s new Cast Iron Grill. This chic, bistro-style restaurant offers relaxed dining for good food lovers of all ages, and is a far cry from the stuffy, old fashioned experience many associate with hotel dining. Cast Iron has cleverly captured the mood of modern dining, combining British classics such as fish and chips, 28-day aged
October/November 2017 Vanilla
steaks and inventive burgers, with dishes for the more adventurous that tap into our increasing love of food from around the world. The result is a rounded and interesting mix that also includes sharing platters, salads, pasta or something sizzling from the grill. Ingredients are sourced locally where possible and of the highest quality, with a strong theme of sustainability. My friend started her meal with a meaty, smokey chicken and chorizo terrine, with ciabatta toast and a good portion of Rubies tangy chutney. A delicious dish, with a perfect combination of smooth, crunchy and spicy. For me, pan-fried scallops on a bed of buttery spinach puree with crispy pancetta was a delight. The scallops were spankingly fresh, full of flavour and perfectly seasoned. With our meal we chose a Sauvignon Blanc Vidal from New Zealand. This light, drinkable wine with notes of passion fruit and peach was perfect with our meal. My dining companion also tried Cast Iron’s own beer, specially
brewed for them by BrewDog. She found it very pleasant; light, fresh, fruity and hoppy. For her main course my friend chose a Tom’s award-winning chicken and leek pie, with mash, gravy and buttered greens. She raved about the buttery rich pastry, moist leek and chicken filling, buttery mash and proper gravy. A classic dish and very satisfying. I had hake from the grill, with lemon, watercress, grilled mushroom and tomato, new potatoes and some buttered greens on the side. This wonderfully meaty fish was impeccably cooked, and the accompaniments faultless. The dessert menu is a tantalising mix of sweet treats such as dark chocolate mousse, lemon brûlée tart, local cheeses, or ‘create your own’ sundaes. My fellow diner chose the toffee and ginger skillet pudding, with banana ice cream; a rich, hot and sticky sponge that was very moreish and impossible to finish! My honeycomb cheesecake, with salted caramel ice cream was just as delicious and gooey – and also beat me! We left Cast Iron feeling happy, well fed and looked after, promising to return soon. The service from start to finish was incredibly warm and friendly. Brett and his team certainly know how to make you feel very special indeed. Look out for Cast Iron’s regular special offers and ‘wine and dine for £59’ menu. REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

The Lodge Griddle & Grill
I
reviewed The Lodge at Tuddenham two years ago and had the most wonderful meal, so I was very pleased to be invited back to help them celebrate their 10th birthday, and dine in the newly refurbished restaurant. Now renamed The Lodge Griddle & Grill, this stylish, welcoming pub has given its restaurant a makeover to create a modern, relaxed dining experience. The chic decor has some very unusual features, such as wood wall panelling expertly ‘stained’ with ingredients from the kitchen, such as gravy browning, coffee, tea and creme de cassis! The menu is new, too, offering a mouthwatering selection of English pub classics, slow cooked meats, handmade burgers, steaks, sizzlers and sharing platters. Head chef Mark has also introduced a ‘catch
82
of the day’ board, to showcase the regions best fish. Everything is freshly made using locally sourced ingredients and the quality is superb. We received the warmest of welcomes from Vikki, Sophie and Ellie, whose attention to detail and service was faultless during the evening. My dining companion kicked off his meal with Griddle & Grill king prawns with sweet chilli jam. This was a generous portion of succulent, sweet shell on prawns served with crusty warm bread. Finger licking good. I started with an oven baked field mushroom topped with lemon, garlic and a cheese and chilli crumb. Delicious, refreshing, tangy and with cool sour cream to bring the whole thing together. Mains were equally good looking and great eating. My steak-loving friend chose a perfectly cooked, meltingly tender and juicy 8oz prime rump steak, with baked mushroom and tomato, skinny fries and salad. One of the best steaks he has ever tasted! I was bowled over by my main, which was a tantalising taste of things to come from the ‘catch of the day’ board. Pan fried cod, with baby scallops, tiger and shell on
prawns, new potatoes, peppers, courgettes and onions, with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze. The perfect fish dish. My fellow diner has a very sweet tooth and described the choice of desserts as ‘very sexy’. He made a beeline for a very rich salted caramel cheesecake on peanut butter biscuit base, with salted caramel ice cream and popcorn. His verdict: “outstanding”. A gorgeous hot apple tart topped with brown sugar crumble and vanilla custard hit the spot for me. Good chunks of tangy apple, proper custard and fresh strawberries to cut through the sweetness. Another memorable meal at The Lodge. This is pub grub at its finest. A big thumbs up with five stars! Keep an eye on their website for themed nights. REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

The perfect gluten free pasta BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd. We all love a taste of Italy, and pasta is an amazingly versatile store cupboard staple that many of us use on a weekly basis. Of course, pasta is usually made from durum wheat so when you’re on a gluten free diet this is no-no. There are so many alternatives these days though, with the most basic and cheapest replacement being corn (maize) based. Corn-based pasta can turn gloopy, so it’s best to cook it in a large pan of boiling water with olive oil. Continually stir to stop it from sticking together – when the pasta is cooked to your liking then drain and refresh quickly with cold water. Another great alternative is white or brown rice based pasta, which we at The Gluten Free Café prefer, as it is much less likely to stick and is more wholesome. If you cannot have grains at all, then there are even green pea, chickpea, lentil, quinoa and flaxseed alternatives available in more specialist shops. The red lentil and green pea pasta is exciting in that it adds colour to your dishes, the flavour is quite strong though so needs to be carefully paired with other flavours in the meal. Another favourite is gnocchi, but this usually contains wheat flour so be very careful. Make sure that you pick it up from the ‘free-from’ section, and, as always, remember to check for gluten containing grains highlighted on every food label.

Mark Willmott Head of Business at Norwich Audi
My City Life Mark Willmott is the Norwich Audi Head of Business with Robinson’s Motor Group, and has been with the company for 12 years. He was born in Norwich and still lives in the city.
What do you love about Norwich? I was born and raised in the city and it’s a very special place to me. Norwich is so well placed, too, you can be out on the North Norfolk coast in no time at all, and it’s just a quick train ride to London. I find Norwich people very friendly, it has a very nice atmosphere, and there is a lot going on in terms of live music, great places to drink and the nightlife has a real buzz!
Robinson’s was founded in 1927 and this year celebrates 90 years as East Anglia’s leading car retailer. Why do you think the business has been so successful? Robinson’s represents some very strong brands, such as Volkswagen, Audi, ŠKODA and Mercedes-Benz, and we have always put sharp focus on brand values and goals. This has been vital to our continued success, but I think what really sets us apart is that we are a family-run business and we employ fantastic staff across the group who are dedicated to exceeding customer expectations every time. A happy customer is always a feather in our cap, and we strive to ensure we do the best for everyone who comes into our showrooms.
What is the most interesting part of your job? Customers are what makes us tick, and for me they are the most fascinating part of what I do. No two customers are the same, they come to us from all walks of life, and it’s hugely satisfying for me to make each and every one of their car dreams come true. This could be someone buying their

first Audi A1, or a retired couple investing in a new car for pure fun and enjoyment.
What do you like to do when you are not working? I love to play golf, I’m not brilliant, but the constant challenge to improve has got me hooked. Being a local man I have always been a Norwich City FC supporter, and I have stuck with them through the highs and many lows over the years. Robinson’s has good ties with the football club and we supply many of the players’ cars, so we have been able to meet most of the team. I’ve also just got into running and cycling, which helps to keep me fit and compensate for my sedentary job.
I love to shop and they may not be hidden, but Hugo Boss, Jonathan Trumbull and House of Fraser are my favourite places to spend my money on clothes. Unlike many cities Norwich celebrates the independent shop and boutique, which makes it much more interesting and you can find things you won’t find anywhere else.
Where are your favourite places to eat in Norwich? The restaurants in Norwich are superb, and there is great choice of every type of cuisine. My top picks for quality and service are Bedfords Bar, Roger Hickman’s, Thai Lanna, and The Belgian Monk. I think I may need to do some more running and cycling to work off all the delicious food in the city! n
