ALL-YEAR OUTDOOR SWIMMING ON THE WAY

It is hoped that restoration work to Ipswich’s Broomhill Lido Pool will get underway next year, as a formal planning application for the restoration of the pool, which will cost more than £5.3m, has been lodged with Ipswich council. The rebuilt Broomhill Pool, in the 1930s Art Deco style, will be heated and have its iconic diving

boards restored when it opens its doors to swimmers again in 2020. It has already got through the first stage of a lottery application and the final decision is expected at the end of this year, by which time the planning application should have been decided. The initial bid was for £3.3m towards the total cost of £5.3m with the borough pledging £1m towards the restoration.

TRENDS

THE SCANDINAVIAN INVASION

BY FIONA COE

F

or many seasons now the Scandinavians have seemed to dominate the independent fashion scene. Their understated approach to styling has captivated the UK market and we can’t get enough of it.

From the likes of premium designers such as Acne, H&M, Cos and & Other Stories on the high street we are increasingly fuelling our love of Nordic design. The notion of ‘hygge’ (the Danish concept of living a simple, well and cosy life) is influencing all areas of our life from our interiors to how we embrace the way we live so it makes sense for the trend to continue into what we choose to wear. So if you want to embrace the Scandi look here are a few pointers to help you style your way to perfection: ● Embrace monochrome – black, white, navy and grey are your key colours. Throw in a Breton stripe to complete your wardrobe basics. Accessories in brighter colours can be used to add interest to your outfit

14

● Layer, layer and layer again. Many Nordic styles are oversized so take the opportunity to wear vests and t-shirts under tops and knits. Don’t be afraid to mix prints, styles and textures particularly in winter with scarves, mitts and hats. It’s fine to wear florals and stripes together as long as the colour palettes are similar. ● Keep trousers short in the leg and relatively skinny. A cigarette style trouser or a legging fit jean balances out the oversize tops, knits and coats. ● Buy a pair of plain black or white trainers and wear them with skirts and dresses. Invest in some high denier hosiery and stride it out ● The Danes absolutely love coats (their climate means that it is a necessity most of the year). An oversize wool coat, a lightweight padded puffa jacket and a waterproof rain mac are absolute essentials for everyday use. So here at Coes we are also on the Nordic love train. Our favourites this season include Samsoe & Samsoe, Rains and our new brand Masai. We love the easy styling and the way we can adapt and style the looks to suit your needs. Not forgetting the gorgeous jewellery from Hultquist and So-Me. The trend is here to stay and we love it. ■

Embrace monochrome A waterproof rain mac is an absolute essential

HOMESPUN CASHMERE

F

lla VanFiIL E

PRO

ashion has always been about innovation but how many people in the business can claim to have their own goats, bred to produce the world’s best cashmere? Vanilla talks to Sam DennyHodson, founder of Homespun in Woodbridge about her passion for knitwear and a life in retail. We have a sneak preview of the new shoot using local models and shot by an international fashion photographer who happens to live in Suffolk. Tell us more about Homespun and how it came into being.

Homespun is a Woodbridgebased cashmere company. We design in Suffolk, produce our knitwear in Mongolia and sell it via our shop in the town, alongside other brands such as Margaret Howell and Paul Smith. I have worked in fashion for over 25 years and after leaving London 14 years ago, I realised my style of dressing needed to adapt to my new home. I’d rather buy less and buy better and Homespun very much reflects this.

26

When my favourite shop premises in Woodbridge became available, I couldn’t resist and opened Homespun, realising that I had carte blanche to stock my favourite labels. We have created a little emporium with labels and accessories to suit everyone who visits us from near or far. My children go to school here, I can design my collection at the kitchen table and also spend time in Mongolia visiting the goats which are near to Ulan Bator, the capital city where our factory is based. Why Mongolia?

I spent two years looking for the finest cashmere in the world, using the expertise and contacts I’d built up during my career. I knew that Mongolia was where I could find the best. My goats are kept on the Mongolian steppes and I go and visit them.To obtain the best fibres you comb

the goats and lay the hair flat, separating out the longest lengths of wool. I only use these finest grades for Homespun knitwear because shorter pieces snap at the ends, resulting in pilling. Our cashmere washes beautifully. It is practical and beautiful. Is Homespun cashmere easy to care for?

Yes! When people tell me they dry clean or hand wash their cashmere I throw up my hands in horror. When you invest in excellent cashmere you can wash it in a machine at 30 degrees, putting it inside a pillowcase first. Dry cleaning chemicals are too harsh for cashmere and make it fall apart; hand washing tends to pull the knitwear out of shape. Cheap cashmere will fall apart in a washing machine but ours will

not and machine washing tends to make it plumper because it’s a natural fabric.

So great cashmere is for life?

I’ve got pieces that are 25 years old, gone through the elbow but why would I throw them away? I love old cashmere and its stories. Homespun cashmere will wear better than any you’ve ever bought and ages beautifully. Because it’s my company I can say I want the cuffs longer or with a deeper welt so they look and fit better. You can put a cashmere jumper with anything and it will make it look great. We all need to step out of the door feeling good, don’t we? ■ Homespun, 1 Market Hill, Woodbridge IP12 4LP t:01394 383834 Visit the cashmere shop online www.homespuncashmere.com

Cake & Catwalk Black... the new black! It’s back! My favourite colour... black, oh, and grey and navy... All those lovely slimming colours that give me body confidence. And yes, the shop has lots of these shades. BUT what a great base to start from! I assimilate this to painting your rooms white or cream then adding different colours to add the excitement. If not, you are trying to match shades and that confuses the eye. So let’s start with your basic and bring in the colour pop. There are some fabulous lime greens, yellows, reds, and gorgeous pinks out there. Try a stunning jacket in a wacky colour on top of a black dress, it can look so stylish. So be comfortable ladies, but also be brave, and rack up the colour. LYNN TURNER

Happy New Year!

tay with me. Fashion has it’s own calendar. It feels like summer has stretched out since mid March, sometimes hot and steamy, sometimes limp and listless. Now there is a feeling of new beginnings in the air as the kids go back to school full of excitement, trepidation, summer stories and exam results. And like schools, fashion’s new year kicks off in “Wrapping up to September with fashion weeks in Paris, London and New York, combat the weather has never been so where there is also a buzz of new beginnings. And then to colour. Last winter we embraced navy, It’s still there, but being mixed with chocolate browns, vintage rose, and lots of rusty reds. Army green is also a big player this season, and for those of you who like to think ahead, the combat colour palette will cross over into next season. So you can snuggle up in your oversized checked coat, pull on your chunky soled ankle boots and wrap your blanket sized scarf around your neck and embrace the coming season’s chill. What to avoid? It has to be said there is a big 1970’s vibe in fashion, and for those of us lucky (or unlucky) enough to have witnessed it first hand, you’ll remember it as the era of extreme bad taste! I suggest you avoid that particular vintage look. That just leaves me to wish you a happy fashion new year! ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden, Essex and Colchester.

THE ELVISH TAILOR

The Elvish Tailor is Anthony Moorhouse, a professional designer and tailor who’s family have been in the trade since 1360. Also a qualified herbalist, he started his fashion business five and half years ago, creating the most unusual, eccentric and vibrant items. “My inspiration comes from fantasy and mythology, mediaeval history, faerie tales and legends,” says Anthony. “I use organic form in my designs, such as flowing water, a passing cloud or rising waves upon a shore. This complements the materials I work with, the highest quality silk, velvet, cotton and Yorkshire tweed.” Anthony’s skill enables him to create the most stunning dresses, jackets, hoods, scarves and capes that flow and flatter. Many feature free-hand embroidery, beading and wire work, feathers, flowers, leaves and the occasional reflecting surface. With the growing interest in ancient myths and legends, Anthony has found a healthy market for his supernatural designs. “Mystical and spiritual are becoming more popular, particularly for wedding dresses, with romantic big sleeves and bodices. It’s classic and very feminine. Most of the pieces I create are made to order, working to customers’ personal ideas, but I also stock items in my shop, Sacred Earth, in Upper Orwell Street.”

“Barker Gotelee made it clear that if you’re engaged, or have got married, then it’s really important to go and talk to a solicitor about your Wills”

Why it’s so important to make a new Will on marriage MY PROBLEM: My mum, Barbara, recently remarried. Her new husband, Peter, is a lovely man and I’m really happy that he’s helped her move on since dad passed away. I do have some concerns, however. They both own property and Peter, like Mum, also has grown-up children from his previous marriage. Although they already had Wills from a while back we had no idea how they’d work now that they’d married. We all get on really well and I certainly didn’t want things to get awkward – I just wanted peace of mind for everyone. SUSAN, IPSWICH

36

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

When Mum met Peter, I was delighted. They’re both in their 60s and being together has given them a new lease of life. They went to Greece earlier this year to marry, and my brother and I went too – it was a really nice way to join our respective families together. Having divorced a few years back, I was more aware than Mum of what can happen when you don’t take steps to make arrangements for the future. With Peter joining our family, I admit I wanted to be sure that my brother Vanilla October/November 2017

REAL LIVES

and I would continue to be entitled to an inheritance from Mum and Dad. Mum mentioned that Peter had similar concerns regarding his children so, when I suggested we went to a solicitor to talk it through, everyone was very open to the idea.

T

he Family Law Team at Barker Gotelee had handled my divorce a few years back. I was impressed with their service, so it made sense to return. Over a coffee, Lindsey told us something that surprised us all: the Wills that Mum and Peter had made separately many years ago were no longer valid following their marriage. Put simply, unless they remade their Wills, there was no guarantee that any of Mum’s or Peter’s wishes would come into play if either passed away. As an extended family, the situation could get complicated and costly – even acrimonious – in the future. This was the last thing we wanted, so Mum and Peter decided right away to remake their Wills.

L

indsey is a great listener, which helped Mum to share concerns that she’d harboured for some time. She admitted that she’d worried about how to ensure that everyone received their fair share of any inheritance, and just the thought of sorting it all out seemed too much. Lindsey reassured Mum that her situation is very common and

that making the new Will would not be a laborious process – music to our ears.

W

e left Mum and Peter to it. Later, Mum explained that Lindsey made the process very easy. Instead of telling them how their Wills should work, Lindsey asked them to explain, in their own words, what their ideal scenario would be. Together, they were able to ensure each other were catered for financially whilst also providing an inheritance for me, my brother and Peter’s children.

Mum also shared an interesting fact from her meeting: engaged couples don’t have to wait until getting married to make their Will, but can make Wills in ‘contemplation of marriage’ to ensure that their Wills remain valid after their wedding. But, Lindsey stressed, the key thing is just to do it – and ideally, the sooner the better. Mum and Peter both admitted that the process was “not the most romantic” but much easier than they had anticipated. They were so glad that they’d done it – you really can’t put a price on peace of mind. ■

“Theo has been there since February and is having a wonderful time too. This is a fabulous place that fully supports both parent and child. You won’t find a happier nursery.” Jo Gosden visited a lot of nurseries looking for the right place for Isaac, 2, and Felicity, 11 months. But once she went to Oakland Hall, her search was over. “It immediately felt like a family, a home, with a wonderful happy atmosphere, and they shared my vision for my children’s growth. “I particularly like that babies have their own cots, and if they cry staff are very affectionate and comfort them. It’s an extension of the love and attention you would give them yourself, that’s what sets Oakland Hall apart. “My two love it there, their manners are superb, and they often don’t want to come home. The staff are wonderfully supportive and actively help to resolve issues. When Isaac refused to clean his teeth, they worked with him and soon he was October/November 2017 Vanilla

F

OR WORKING MUM Sarah Blanchard, finding nursery care is something she is very used to, because she has 4 children, all boys! For her youngest, 18-month-old Ronald, Oakland Hall was a far cry from the chaotic, disorganised nurseries she had seen in the past. “It was wonderful; peaceful and calm, and each age group has their own room. Everything is well controlled, but in a very positive, loving way. “My partner and I both work 5-6 days a week, so we really appreciate Oakland Hall’s ‘to bed’ service, which means they shower and change Ronald into bedclothes before we pick him up. This really lightens our load. There is a lot of focus on helping busy parents in practical ways that

make a real difference. I haven’t seen that anywhere else. “Ronald is in heaven there. The friendly staff always make time to talk through Ronald’s day, what he’s been up to, and even very specific details about nappy changes. They are so professional, yet warm and understanding too. Oakland Hall is the ultimate nursery, they have thought of everything. A big bunch of gold stars from me!” ■

MOOSE

Back in April 2016, Moose Interiors & Lifestyle opened in Woodbridge and its blend of highly individual home furnishings, clothing and accessories has attracted a loyal customer base. Owner Karen Hill chats to Vanilla Magazine. Have you always worked in retail?

I was a trader in banking working in London and New York but after sixteen years I decided to travel and upon my return, a friend told me about premises in Camden and I decided to open a store. I have always been interested in homewares and interiors and I had a great mentor who would source interesting things and ask me if I'd be interested in having them for my shop. I loved the diversity of Camden and eventually, I opened a second accessories store next door to the original business.

40

What brought you to Woodbridge?

When Camden started to change I moved my business to Spitalfields and opened a store there. Eventually, I decided to look for somewhere to live in East Anglia where I could ride and keep animals, so I could divide my time between here and London. We don’t actually live in Woodbridge but I was familiar with the town from holidays and because some of my friends grew up here. My husband had heard that a tiny shop was available in Woodbridge, very different from what I was used to but it was sweet and quirky and I do love the town. I did my homework, identifying gaps in the retail market and knew that I would be able to put together a store filled with lovely, unusual things. And Moose was born.

What are your plans for the future?

To keep striving. You can't sit back on your laurels when it comes to customer service and the sourcing of innovative products. I visit shows but I also know where to find the designers who don't shout from the rooftops. Ensuring I establish and maintain good relationships with them so they know that Moose is the right place for the lovely things they create is important. ■

What is Moose like?

It might be a fraction of the size of my previous shops but Moose keeps me on my toes because it

is forever evolving as I look for new things to keep my customers happy. People want to see the latest designs; they enjoy receiving emails telling them that Moose has taken delivery of new jewellery, homewares, accessories, or clothing. After seventeen months of trading, Moose has developed a lovely, loyal client base who all value good quality. I don’t do ‘brands’. Our clothing comes from mainly Italian, French and British designers and what I try to do is find the new, up-andcoming designers on the block who are all in that creative and innovative phase of their careers; their products are a good price point and high quality. I seem to have hit the right mix. As a store owner, I have to change and adapt because shoppers in Woodbridge are savvy and discerning. They know what they like and what we have in store seems to work well here.

October/November 2017 Vanilla

F YOU LOVE getting away from it all, but hate leaving your four-legged friend behind, why not take them with you? It’s getting easier to travel with pets across Suffolk, the UK and now Europe, as more and more holiday companies improve their canine care facilities. Suffolk’s stunning stretches of coast, beautiful beaches and friendly villages makes it ideal for away days with your pooch. Many travel companies offer pet-friendly breaks here if you want to try a different part of our region. But if you want to go further, there are plenty of options. We set our sights on South West France, famous for its sun, sea and Basque culture.

You can drive via Eurotunnel, or take the ferry – Brittany Ferries offers kennels, pet-friendly cabins and decks for walkies. Booking was easy and there was plenty of advice for pet owners. A few weeks later we were on a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, enjoying cruise-style facilities - cafés, bars, restaurants, a swimming pool, spa, cinemas, games rooms, entertainment and whale watching. Our cabin had a sea view, comfortable beds, an ensuite bathroom and shower. Bonnie our Border Collie was quite happy on board and slept most of the journey. We met other dog owners on the pet deck who said they made the crossing regularly and had never had any problems. We arrived in Bilbao the next

A five-minute walk the other way took us into Bidart, with its bars and restaurants but it was just as tempting to stay on our veranda sipping wine (three Euros a bottle), watching the surfers and wildlife. Villa Kaioa sleeps six and had everything we needed – Wi-Fi, television, DVDs and sports equipment. The villa was stylishly and comfortably furnished with cool tile floors, two large dining tables, one inside and one out, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge/freezer and a utility room. The friendly owner, Adeline, suggested we order from the nearby supermarket in advance, so you can arrive with your shopping done. She greeted us with a traditional Basque pie and great advice on amenities and events. WHEN TO TRAVEL Most people book Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s as it fits around their work schedule but these are the most expensive days to fly. If you can be flexible the best departure and return days can fluctuate between a Tuesday and a Thursday. AVOID ROAMING CHARGES Start by finding out what kind of international plan your phone has. Consider a portable Wi-Fi hotspot like Skyroam to keep in your purse or pocket. You can pay as little as $8 a day for unlimited data in about 100 countries. GETTING UPGRADED Sadly, there’s no fool-proof way to get from economy to the front of the plane, despite the sweetness of your talk. But by flying regularly with one airline, you rack up miles and status that can get you upgrades on routes that aren’t business-heavy. BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE A medical emergency can wipe out your savings – or even worse. Travel insurance is quite cheap and gives you peace of mind. BE FLEXIBLE Last minute delays are inevitable so try not to get upset if your plans have to change. Patience is extremely important when travelling!

The pool is open all year round, including all bank holidays, and you can join their swimming lessons at anytime. They have lessons to suit all ages and abilities from babies and including adults... it really is the best place to learn and what better time to have fun in the really warm pool when it’s turning colder outside. Ali Abbott, whose job it is to ensure First Strokes deliver an even better customer experience, is very excited about what’s happening this Autumn.

44

“We now have a full team of full-time swimming teachers, all highly qualified. This is great for learners, because it means they get consistency and bond with the same teacher every time they have a class.” With October half term coming up, Ali has planned a programme of events to keep everyone happy. “We are hoping to run a series of workshops on diving, rookie lifeguards and starts and turns, plus intensive ‘crash’ swimming courses from Monday to Friday. “We have our legendary inflatable sessions, too, where we put huge inflatables in the pool which act as an obstacle course. These are great fun for both parents and children. Of course

we will still have our public Just Swim sessions from 12pm to 1pm Monday to Friday, and from 2pm to 4pm at weekends.” Ali is especially pleased with the new café in the swim centre, which is a great place to pop in for a drink or tasty treat. “We are very proud of The Coffee Shop, which is run by Debs and her daughterVanilla October/November 2017

people come in for a bite and a coffee who aren’t using the pool at all!” If you want a birthday party with a difference, holding your celebration at First Strokes could be a stroke of genius! “Our Epic Pool Parties are more popular than ever, and such an original idea,” says Ali. “You can have exclusive use of the pool for one hour on a Saturday or Sunday, for up to 30 people, and thanks to the our fantastic cafe we can provide delicious party food too.” That’s sure to be a winner with even the most demanding birthday diva! It looks like Ali and her team

have worked extra hard to make First Strokes the best swimming experience in East Anglia. They look forward to seeing you very soon. Don’t forget to try those delicious scones! ■

WE TREAT MEN TOO!

I

T SHOULD come as no surprise that men are just as keen as women to reduce the appearance of cellulite and remove pockets of stubborn body fat – they just don’t always like to admit it! But it now seems that inch loss, body sculpting and skin tightening treatments for men are in high demand as they finally catch on to the fact we can all do with a bit of extra help. Charles began having Lipofirm Plus treatments at The Scultura Clinic, after he had lost an incredible seven stone in weight following a diet and exercise regime. Despite rigorous exercise, Charles could not shift the last few inches from his stomach. Clothes weren’t comfortable and, by his own admission, he just wanted his stomach to “look better”. Charles had heard about The Scultura Clinic and Lipofirm Plus,

October/November 2017 Vanilla

but was really sceptical that the treatments would work for him. Encouraged by his family and friends he booked a consultation at the clinic, at which the therapist outlined the results he could realistically expect to achieve. Charles found the treatments surprisingly relaxing, and was very pleased with the results after just one session, so decided to continue with more sessions. He was absolutely delighted when his stomach reduced in size and there was visible improvement to the texture and tone of his skin. The before and after images above show the results following only four treatments. Charles is more than happy to recommend The Scultura Clinic and would urge anyone, men or women, wanting to improve their shape, especially after dieting, to “give it a go”. n

READER OFFER The Scultura Clinic in Mendlesham are very confident that their Lipofirm Plus inchloss treatments work. So they are offering a satisfication guarantee or your money back. BEAUTY

to All you need know about . . .

So what does the procedure actually involve?

Firstly find an experienced, qualified practitioner. You will be offered a consultation where the practitioner will take your details, including your medical history, and fill in a consent form. At Tallent Medical you will always discuss the look you wish to achieve and how to attain this, and Dr Tallent will check you are happy with this throughout the procedure. If you wish to proceed you will have numbing cream applied. Then the lips are cleaned and photographed for records. You will have several injections, just below the skin, using a very fine needle. The results are visible immediately, however your lips may swell initially, but this will go down after a few days. The appointment usually lasts 30-45 minutes. Does it hurt?

Most people find the procedure very tolerable with the numbing cream that is applied before the procedure. The dermal filler also contains a local anaesthetic which numbs the lips from within. If someone is particularly sensitive, they can request a dental block to completely numb the area. How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers can last from 3-12

LIP FILLERS

BY DR RACHEL TALLENT OF TALLENT MEDICAL

months, depending on the type of filler and several external factors. Factors which can speed up the break down are smoking, sun exposure including sunbeds, and excessive muscle movement. Some people have a natural tendency to breakdown the filler quicker than others. Are there any side effects?

Swelling and bruising are common side effects, and most people will encounter these to varying degrees. Applying ice afterwards can help reduce swelling, and taking Arnica tablets before and after the procedure can reduce bruising. Some people may have some small lumps, and these can be gently massaged out if necessary. Extremely rare problems include skin death, scarring and allergic reactions, which should always be discussed during the consultation. The filler used for lips should always be made of hyaluronic acid, a gel like substance which is found naturally in our bodies; nothing like the silicone which produced disastrous results for actress, Leslie Ash in 2000. When do you need to top up?

It is up to the individual – some clients like to have top ups before the filler reduces in size, others prefer to wait until it has

all come out. Dr Tallent generally recommends waiting 3-9 months between treatments. I worry about looking too fake?

In most cases lip fillers will look very natural and Dr Tallent is a firm advocate of this. Lip enhancement is her most requested filler treatment so she is highly experienced in managing different requirements. Some clients prefer obvious, larger lips, but if you wish to add a lot of volume, it is advisable to do this in stages. Dr Tallent has a range of fillers, including medium thickness for a more plump look, or a thinner filler for a subtle enhancement. They also come in a half or full syringes. Can anyone have lip enhancement?

Anyone over the age of 18 can have lip filler, as long as there is no medical contraindication. Dr Tallent treats clients of many ages. As you get older, your lips thin and lines form around them, so a small amount of filler can help to smooth them out and maintain your natural fullness. n Tallent Medical t: 07824 114275 e: drtallent@tallentmedical.co.uk 0.55mls: £200/£250 1ml: £250/£300/£350 www.tallentmedical.co.uk

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective Hands up who likes change?

Just the idea of change, controlled or otherwise, can lead most of us into an uncomfortable mindset. Let’s take a moment and explore the negatives of change; unexpected, sad, frightened, unsure, unsafe - all of which are fear based. But let’s consider what happens when there is no change – stagnation, and, if we stop moving for long enough, that's death... to relationships, inspiration, our work, our professions and ourselves. Change and movement is about being alive. What doesn’t change will not move forward. This is a time of year of change – for many their children are starting a new phase at school, leaving for uni, coming back from uni, looking for jobs... Some of us are just aware that the summer has drawn to a close and another year is slipping by.

Escape from the hustle and bustle of your daily routine and indulge in the calming surroundings of the beautifully refurbished Spa at Seckford Hall

Here’s how to change...

First of all, embrace the endless and exciting possibilities that could occur when you move forward. Look back over the last 12 months. List what went right, list what went wrong. Now look at what worked and what didn’t. You may well be surprised that you have experienced more success than you realise... Ask yourself why? What behaviours and mindset occurred? Was your motto as simple as keep going/breathing or one of total enthusiasm. Let’s start from here and unlike the winter clock that this time of year “falls back” now is the time to “spring forward”.

ara Szczepanski is an expert health professional who is passionate about people accessing better health, which is why clients flock to her Colon Hydrotherapy practice, Osalo. Osalo is located at Encore Wellness a beautiful new centre in Needham Market. Sara’s wealth of experience and qualifications – she is a practising Registered Nurse and Colon Hydrotherapist – along with a comprehensive range of treatments helps keep Osalo ahead of the competition. Sara says medical conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome can have a profound effect on sufferers who often find the subject too hard to discuss and don’t want to bother their GP. I am the only practitioner in East Anglia who uses herbal implants to enhance the effectiveness of Colon Hydrotherapy. Herbs such as peppermint, chamomile and fennel can be used to target specific symptoms depending on the clients needs. FEEL FABULOUS

Colon Hydrotherapy:

Colonics can alleviate bloating, constipation, IBS, headaches, parasitic infestation and boost the natural healthy gut bacteria. Coffee Anti-oxidant Treatment: Reduces liver

toxicity, supports this very important organ to function better. Liver Detox regimes:

Sara can spot a poorly functioning liver and can devise bespoke plans using nutritional support, food diaries and treatments to improve and maintain the livers health. Live Probiotic Implants:

Most people are apprehensive before a colonic....how can water and a tube inside me NOT hurt? “Not at all” says Sara “everyone thinks colonics are like enemas, but they’re not. An enema is quick, abrasive, initiating a rapid reaction, a colonic is the absolute opposite; slow and gentle, there is no odour or embarrassment and your privacy and dignity are protected throughout.

Everyone is talking about the importance of Gut Microbiomes... prebiotics... probiotics... Sara can answer all those gut questions and uses live probiotic implants to repopulate the gut’s healthy bacteria levels. This treatment is especially good during or after a course of antibiotics. Food Diaries: To recognise trends which may help determine food intolerances.

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED

...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

56

I AM 45 AND I AM GETTING SPOTS AROUND MY JAW LINE. I THOUGHT I WAS TO OLD FOR SPOTS?

Millions of women in their 30s, 40s and beyond are dealing with acne. There are many reasons you can break out as an adult. Some could be due to stress or changes in your hormone levels – the menopause or switching or stopping birth control pills are two possibilities. Too much sugar, dairy and refined carbohydrates can make acne worse. Almonds, blueberries, avocados and kidney beans are among a range of foods which may help to reduce and to prevent inflammation. For sufferers, too much sugar in your diet can lead to inflammation and increased oil production, so it is vital that you eat the correct foods to help your skin. While your skin is breaking out it might be worth investing in a few key skincare products to combat your change of skin. Go and see your beauty/ skin therapist; they will give you a consultation, examine your skin and be able to recommend some hero products. Top Tip: Ask for samples to try before you buy

DO I NEED TO USE TONER?

In the past toners have been known for sucking moisture out of skin with alcohol or witch hazel. The truth is a good toner is loaded with antioxidants and skin-restoring and skinreplenishing ingredients that nourish skin. Toners also help mop up any excess oils or dirt and help tighten your pores. They also balance out the PH of your skin, which can get out of whack after cleansing due to the alkaline nature of soap. Top Tip: Dampen your cotton pads before using toner this will make you use less product. TANNING PRODUCTS ALWAYS FADE UNEVENLY ON MY SKIN AND SETTLE INTO MY PORES. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP WITH THIS?

As great as an airbrushed looking tan sounds, it comes with some serious pre-treatment care. Your first and most important step is to exfoliate your skin to remove any dead skin cells and leave a smooth surface for the tan to sit on. Shaving must be done between 8 and 24 hours prior to your spray tan and waxing must be done at least 24 hours prior. This will ensure your pores are closed and prevent the tan getting in and appearing ‘spotty’. Some moisturisers and makeup products can act as a barrier, not allowing the full amount of the product to attach itself to the skin, leaving the tan looking patchy. Instead, moisturise fully the day before your tan and this will help your tan last longer. Top Tip: Carry on moisturising and gently exfoliating, this will help keep the tan more even. n Vanilla October/November 2017

KERB APPEAL

W

e all focus our attention on making the interior of our homes as stylish and up to date as possible, but what about the exterior? We only get one chance to make a good first impression, and the way your house looks from the outside is just as important as having a beautiful kitchen or new conservatory. If you think your house doesn’t have kerb appeal, don’t worry – you can update and change the outside appearance to improve its look, value, saleability and even thermal performance. Think of it as making a real investment. Many houses built between the1960s and 1990s were constructed using drab cheap orange-coloured bricks, ugly concrete roof tiles and cheap low performing dark brown stained windows. This was to meet the ever-increasing demand for new low-cost housing, but as a result these properties look lacklustre to

our modern eyes. But there are ways to upgrade these dated and unappealing features and make real improvements to your home; such as changing the cladding, rendering, paint and slates, or fitting aluminium or timber windows. The options are endless. If done sympathetically and to a good standard, the results can be amazing! Covering drab brickwork can be done using natural timber cladding, such as Larch and Cedar, or maintenance free composite cladding. You could also think about render, either traditional sand and cement, lime or through colour silicone render. Mixing one of these with some cladding may also be an option.

With all these choices you could install a rigid PIR insulation behind to improve the thermal performance of your property. If cost is an issue simply painting brickwork can also totally transform the look. The roof is a very large feature of most houses or bungalows. Replacing those faded concrete roof tiles with natural slates or fibre cement slates will completely lift its appearance. At the same time you could also upgrade your roof insulation. Changing your windows can give the personality of your house a huge boost and vastly improve the thermal performance. Popular types are grey aluminium, UPVC or factory finished timber. If you are considering carrying out any of this type of work to your property I would strongly recommend seeking advice from an architect or reputable builder. Depending on location and the work you intended doing, you may require planning permission and/or building regulation approval. ■ Mark Crisp MCIOB CCM Chapel Properties, Quaypoint, Station Road, Woodbridge IP12 4AL www.chapelproperties.co.uk Cladding, rendering, new windows and roof tiles can transform a home

GLASSWELLS BIG REVAMP

Bury St Edmunds Glasswells unveils its £1million refurbishment plans

A

complete refit of flooring, roomsets, fixtures and fittings, is underway at Glasswells in Bury St Edmunds, which will give the store a bright and fresh new look and offer customers a new shopping experience within the town. The last major works were 15 years ago, when an extension was built to house an impressive atrium entrance, extensive homewares and bedroom departments and a purpose built carpet warehouse. Glasswells went on to open a new, modern store in Ipswich in 2008 and, whilst there has been some redecoration at Newmarket Road, Managing Director, Paul Glasswell, felt it was time for a more significant change. The work has been planned and managed in-house by the company’s Visual Merchandiser,

and Bedroom departments. Over 100,000 square feet of bespoke flooring by Ege Carpets and Kardean luxury vinyl tiles are being installed over the next couple of months by Glasswells expert contract carpet fitters. Craftsmen are erecting new partition walls and beautiful new displays tare arriving evry day. Some layout changes have been made to the walkways to open up display areas and

“We look forward to being able to give our special customers the freshest, and ultimately the best, shopping experience in Suffolk!”

Sarah Norris – her experience of creating aspirational and attractive displays to enhance the customer journey, plus her passion for interior design, made her the perfect candidate for the job. Work began in October last year, with a £150,000 22-seat extension to the popular in-store Place to Eat Restaurant. A colour palette of cool greys and mix of natural materials were selected to give a modern and airy industrial feel; a scheme which will run across the rest of the project. At the start of June, the store closed for five days to prepare for the biggest clearance sale of its seventy year history. The first phase of the refurb works commenced in July, which involved uplifting all of the old flooring in the first floor Bed

give customers an easier route around the store. Glasswells will be integrating more technology to offer tech-savvy shoppers a more interactive and informative experience. Updating the furniture departments is only phase one of a massive programme of work which will roll out and continue into next year, including the modernisation of the Reception and Paypoint areas, plus new fixtures and fittings within the flooring, soft furnishings and home accessories departments. Whilst all this work is going on it’s business as usual, with the restaurant and all departments open seven days a week. ■ Newmarket Rd, Bury St Edmunds t: 01284 752804 Glasswells Retail Park, Ranelagh Road, Ipswich t: 01473 253164

FOOD

ALAN FORD Alan Ford, Head Chef at Hintlesham Hall Hotel, is passionate about offering the best cuisine possible. He began his career with an apprenticeship in Canterbury, followed by 8 years in London, including stints at Grosvenor House Hotel and The Dorchester, with a year off in Australia for good behaviour! He then joined Hintlesham Hall as Head Chef and has spent the majority of his career at the hotel. His style of cuisine is Modern British, but because he was classically trained, that is the starting point of most of his dishes.

Kitchen CONFIDE

NTIAL

What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

Salt would be my priority, along with spices. I really enjoy Thai curries, so a tin of coconut milk is always a must!

Ingredients do seem to go full circle, I am using quite a bit of mutton at the moment, as it is full of flavour, mainly shoulder braised with all excess fat removed (of course!). Or maybe other lesser used/known cuts of meat, although that’s probably my wishful thinking! At the more extreme end, maybe the use of insects in dishes will become more popular, as I have seen a few ‘creeping’ into some dishes on menus at other restaurants – but I think I will be passing on that one for our menus at Hintlesham Hall!

What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

After a hard day in the kitchen, food is not a priority! However, smoked salmon and charcuterie as grazing food, is a favourite. What type of cooking do you enjoy cooking the most?

I love cooking with fish and shellfish (scallops in particular) as fish is so versatile.

76

Suffolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?

I use various local suppliers, but Assington farm strawberries, along with their apple juice are exceptional. Also, local East Anglian cheeses are very good, I use a Suffolk goats curd from Fielding Farm, which has a very fresh, vibrant taste. It is supplied through Hamish Johnston Fine cheeses who have a vast selection of local cheeses. ■ Hintlesham Hall Hotel, Hintlesham, Ipswich IP8 3NS 01473 652334 www.hintleshamhall.co.uk Vanilla October/November 2017

IN MY DISGUISE Whilst 2016 marked the spark for success for the Ipswich-based band, In My Disguise, 2017 has seen them grow further. Since 2016, when they released their two debut singles, ‘Alive’ and ‘Fear’, the gigging stage has embraced their talent. Highlights for the group include opening the Ed Sheeran stage at Ipswich Music Day and the ‘Independent Venue Week’ festival by the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket.

How did you get involved in fashion? At almost 6ft tall I have always struggled to find stylish, elegant clothes to fit me. Whenever I returned from my travels I always seemed to buy the same brand, which was made in Italy, because I knew it would look good on me. So I decided I wanted to sell it for myself and went in search of suppliers! Kittys Jules was going so well that in May 2016 I decided to expand and formed my sister company Kitty & Em boutique with my dear friend Emma. We grew the mobile side of the business, doing many pop-up boutiques, and then we were thrilled to open our store on High Street, Hadleigh in April this year.

What do you love about the area? I actually live in Essex, but for my family and I living close to the sea is very special. We love nothing more than wandering on Wrabness beach which is nearby. It’s so relaxing and peaceful and we are so lucky in East Anglia, to have such a beautiful coastline.
