CHANGES TO MARKET HILL The Market Hill Woodbridge is looking very different these days, with three already established businesses bringing a fresh contemporary feel to the Hill. Uniform Research, the men’s fashion store, based in Ipswich and run by Dan, has taken up a second residence in the square, bringing with them their unique style and combination of fabulous brands. Moose stays in the same location but September/October 2019 Vanilla

has a new owner, Sam Cook, who many of you will already know. Sam will continue to stock all the brands her customers love and is looking forward to welcoming you to her store. Finally, Evelyn Jack has relocated her Hair and Beauty Salon to the Market Hill bringing with her a whole range of treatments previously unavailable in Woodbridge. The new businesses really compliment the fabulous existing ones, such as Franny & Frank, Blue Bay, Darcy B, Anna and Chenevix Jewellers. With Bridal Boutiques Amelia & Alice and Victoria Alexander, The Strawberry Café and The Galley serving tasty food, the Market Hill is a haven for independent shopping. There really is something for everyone!

WELL DONE TO...

ROMA NICHOLSON

Local bands and artists are to have their music showcased alongside household names like Suffolk boy Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Taylor Swift at Ipswich’s busy HMV store. The shop in the town’s Sailmakers Shopping Centre has just stocked its first home-grown singer in Roma Nicholson and the 13-year-old is sharing a sales rack with none other than the Rolling Stones! It’s part of a new policy by the high street’s musical giants to promote local music in their local areas and it’s been welcomed by HMV Ipswich manager, Pete Bowery who said: “I think it’s a great idea. “Roma is the first local artist to be featured and she’s on our playlist now as well and we have at least another half dozen in the process of getting their applications dealt with. Roma, a pupil at Ipswich’s Northgate High School, released her first CD, Teen Spirit, last year and sales are already going well.

STYLE NOTES AW19 by Pam Davis

W

ith autumn now mere weeks away, the high street is reflecting the trends that emerged from the shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris back in February and March. There are plenty of trends to choose from: take classic capes and heritage checks for some seasonal starters, then head through to silky slips and dainty shoes, and even a new way to tie your scarf. Here’s my top four trends for AW19: CHECKS & TARTAN

Not groundbreaking for an autumn winter season, but always welcome, and there's more than ever around this season. Even the master of heritage checks – Burberry – have mixed it up a bit with some grid-like designs .

BAGGY TROUSERS

Ideally worn with a chunky platform shoe to allow the fabric to bunch around the ankles, worn high over the hip, these slouchy slacks came in heavy tailored fabrics and neutral colours. Pockets essential. GOTHIC FLORALS

Flower prints are still at River Island in full bloom but now they’re darker and richer and more opulent. Look out for ruffle dresses, gathered sleeves and pussy-bow necklines.

Cake & Catwalk Brace yourselves! This could be our toughest season so far. No closer to Brexit, and many are still unsure about the future, both personally and commercially. As retailers we have already had to make our buying decisions. But how much to buy? Can we afford it? What’s on trend? And what are our price points?! As independents we can respond quite quickly to changes but the high street retailers have to commit well ahead. For consumers and customers its an open market, and with great deals to be had on the internet, the retailer can be undercut in a snap, making us very vulnerable. Along with tracking your own finances and preparing for what may lay ahead and Christmas spending – now is time to really consider your purchases. Don’t buy cheap and disposable (unless you have growing children) but invest in items that are not only sustainable but will last more than one season. Try to support both your independents and your high street, make the most of your money and ENJOY your shopping experience. Customer service and personal engagement is still king! This season Cake & Catwalk are introducing Soya Concept from Denmark (which boasts sustainable), along with new collections from A Postcard from Brighton, Sundee T, Stehman trousers and lots of amazing jewellery and accessories. ARATS JEWELLERS was SHOP established in 1985 by TALK Ian Bishop, bringing a unique and personal experience to Ipswich town centre. Ian was joined by his wife Heather a couple of years later and together they have built a successful business offering modern and stylish jewellery throughout the decades to locals. With the onsite workshop equipped for making and repairing all kinds of jewellery, Carats has remained an important fixture in the town by providing a place where customers can go to pick out a special gift, treat themselves or have a beloved piece recreated into a more contemporary design. “Now I know the children and I won’t be without a home and we can all move on with our lives”

The myth of the common law spouse OUR PROBLEM: My partner, Gary, and I had been together for ten years. We have two beautiful children and had a wonderful home together. We very much lived as husband and wife, albeit not legally married. When Gary and I first got together, we had separate homes for the first couple of years; I then moved into his house and we started a family. During this time, I inherited some money and paid for an extension. We were in love and I thought we’d always be together, so I was happy to contribute this to the house without being named in any way on the deeds. When we separated, of course, I was worried about what would happen to the children and me, but assumed I’d be classed as Gary’s common law wife and so would have similar rights as if I were his actual wife. LUCY, SUFFOLK

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

My friend had recently gone through a divorce and so I asked her advice. She said that Amanda Erskine at Barker Gotelee had been brilliant and recommended that I speak to her. I made an appointment and met with Amanda within a few days. She instantly put me at ease. I felt happy that I had somebody caring and kind on my side with the interests of my children and me very much at heart.

REAL LIVES

I

was surprised to learn from Amanda that there is no such thing as a common law spouse and that, legally, I wasn’t automatically entitled to a share of Gary’s house, which had been our family home for the past eight years. She did also explain, however, that it could be possible for me to make a claim because I had paid for an extension that would have contributed to an increase in value of the property. Amanda asked me to pull together any evidence of everything I’d paid for – including receipts, invoices, bank statements etc. I duly handed this over so she had a good understanding of what she felt I ought to be entitled to. She said that the first step would be to write to Gary and ask his thoughts. A few days later, Gary wrote back and said he understood that I would be entitled to something, but the figure he had in mind was somewhat different to what I was thinking. It was nowhere near enough for me to put down a deposit on a new house.

A

manda advised that it would be sensible to have Gary’s house valued and, specifically, to ask for the increase in value that the extension had added. Gary was prepared to do this and so arranged for three estate agents to value the property. With this information Amanda was able to negotiate and agree with Gary a specific figure to compensate me for what I had contributed. Now, a few months on, I have

“I’ve found the perfect house for the children and me and am just waiting for the purchase to complete.” received the financial settlement from Gary, I’ve found the perfect house for the children and me and am just waiting for the purchase to complete. The payment from Gary has provided

me with enough of a deposit to buy somewhere suitable, where I can start to build a new life. Whilst the breakdown of the relationship was an upsetting time for all of us, now we’re over that hurdle, it feels as though we can all look forward and the children have a home with both me and Gary.

I

will forever be grateful to Amanda for her help and support. She simplified a complicated issue, taking my emotions out of the equation, which, I’m sure, resulted in a far more positive outcome than if Gary and I had been left to argue it out between us. ■

here is risk in every action and there can be risk in taking no action at all. I regularly hear myself tell people that it is better to know than to guess. What are the risks that you face and have you taken action to try and mitigate them? For many we worry about falling ill, what if we are unable to work for a prolonged period? Or perhaps your concern is having enough savings to comfortably retire or maybe you are concerned about larger issues such as a No-Deal Brexit or climate change. We cannot remove risk from our lives, it would be a dull life if we could. My family spends a lot of time out rock climbing. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport, but we mitigate this risk in several ways.

We check our kit to ensure it is in good condition and showing no signs of wear, we try to anticipate both the best and the worst outcomes. We seek to understand the risks and plan accordingly. Our personal and financial goals need to be understood and planned for. Things seldom fall into place without some direction. Taking no action could leave you vulnerable. It is possible to insure against death or long-term illness, you may boost pension contributions, give away money to charity, diversify your holdings or any number of actions which can help to mitigate risks in various scenarios. To do so you must: 1. Understand the risks unique to your goals 2. Understand the options available to you

WEAR IT PINK IS BACK! Save the date! Wear it Pink takes place on Friday 18 October, raising funds for vital breast cancer research and support

T

his October, Breast Cancer Now is encouraging everyone in Suffolk to wear it pink and help make life-saving breast cancer research and lifechanging support happen. Breast Cancer Now’s Wear it Pink Day takes place across Suffolk on Friday 18 October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, the event has had an enormous impact on the lives of those affected by breast cancer since launching in 2002 and has raised over £33 million for breast cancer research to date. Anyone can take part in wear it pink. Some people will choose to hold a cake sale, while others will opt to organise a raffle and some will arrange a pink fancy dress day at their school or workplace. No matter how

people chose to wear it pink, all the money raised will help to fund vital breast cancer research and support. Lottie Barnden, Head of Mass Participation at Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now, said: “In 2017, in Suffolk around 677 women were given the devastating news that they have breast cancer. In the same period around 162 women from the area sadly died from breast cancer. “We currently fund around a third of all breast cancer research happening in the UK, and last year we responded to nearly 7 million breast cancer support requests. Without the generosity of Wear It Pink supporters we simply cannot continue to fund this crucial research and support, for all those affected by breast cancer now, and in the future.

“That is why we are urging everyone across the UK to get involved in Wear It Pink on Friday 18 October to help us make lifesaving breast cancer research and life-changing support happen!” Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now have united to create the UK’s first comprehensive breast cancer charity, united around the shared ambition that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live, and receive the support they need to live well. The charity cannot reach this goal without the money raised from Wear It Pink... ● Wear it Pink raises funds for breast cancer research and support. LEARNING SCHOOLS

Choosing a school

Are extra-curricular programmes the true test?

I

N SO MANY regards, how a school approaches enrichment tells you all you need to know about what it wants for its children. It’s something you can get away with not putting a lot of effort into – it’s not examined, or in league tables, or really measured by Ofsted. And because of this, a successful programme of extra-curricular is indicative of a head having the combination of genuine passion and attention to detail that is vital for a school to be truly great. Mrs Danielle Clarke, Principal of St Joseph’s College, said, “Academic excellence is a worthy goal and we expect our students to strive for it to the best of their ability, but it cannot alone produce the rounded, grounded and happy individuals

September/October 2019 Vanilla

we hold as our greatest successes. “We never forget there’s a whole world beyond St Joseph’s College. Extra-curricular activities are not an adjunct to education but key to producing resilient, lateral thinkers and compassionate decision makers. Those strengths may find their beginnings in drama workshops, a musical production, or towards the end of a muddy crosscountry course. We understand the lightbulb moment comes for some whilst distributing groceries to local families in need at Christmas and to others during an international ski or sport tour, taking part in our Australian exchange, or pitching a tent on a dark, windy hillside in pouring rain on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition…”

‘That’s why St Joseph’s College places great emphasis on the vast range and number of extra-curricular clubs and activities it offers daily, weekly and termly. We want our students to try new things. Sometimes a passion is sparked; sometimes it isn’t. But the experience is never wasted,’ she added. “What happens outside the classroom is just as important as what happens inside. Indeed it complements academic work,” comments Ipswich School Headmaster, Nicholas Weaver. “That’s why we refer to it as our co-curriculum. This programme runs throughout the whole school - from the Prep right up to the Sixth Form. It offers a range of opportunities that appeal to every child’s sense of

37

LEARNING

The Education issue “What happens outside the classroom is just as important as what happens inside. Indeed it complements academic work Nicholas Weaver, Headmaster, Ipswich Schooll

adventure while also developing important interpersonal and life skills. Throughout the Prep and Senior Schools, sport, music and drama are second to none. In the Prep activities include sewing, percussion, bushcraft and even sports such as ski-ing, sailing and fencing. In the Senior School we have the hugely popular cadet force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, journalism, stage crew and a plethora of clubs such as robotics, engineering, dance and computing. This co-curricular programme has huge benefits. Pupils love it. They grow as a result of it, and because of it their learning prospers.” Here are some questions that parents should be thinking about asking heads when they visit a school: What enrichment opportunities do you organise for pupils?

This question is obviously straightforward, and partly

38

covered above, but that makes it no less important. You will ideally want to see a variety of options on offer, encouraging students to try different things and broaden their horizons. How do you decide which ones to run?

The answer to this question will give you a good insight into the head’s mindset for their school. While there will be a range of activities on offer, there is obviously a limit to what can be run at any time – what have they done with speaks volumes. Is the school trying to nudge its students in a certain direction? Do they ensure pupils try different things over time, or are they happy to stay in their comfort zone and do the same ones every term? Does the school offer fewer, different, activities after hours, but more within the core day? Great schools all have lots of music, sport and arts as

a minimum. Hopefully you’ll hear about all the sporting fixtures completed, and which performances have taken place in the last term or two. Every school should have a choir, band, or orchestra. If they don’t, it is worth asking why and whether or not they did in the past, and what they’re doing to get them going once more. What proportion of your pupils participate in wider activities?

This is probably the most vital question here, as there is little point in organising great opportunities if only a small proportion of pupils participate in them – great schools expect, and ensure, that all their pupils are involved. Just because they aren’t a part of the academic curriculum, it does not mean that they are any less important. They are a key part of opening children’s eyes to things they otherwise wouldn’t experience. So while pupils should be given freedom to experience different activities, they should all be made to experience something from the school’s extracurricular offerings. ■

Beside the seaside Vanilla celebrates our local unsung hero... the town of Felixstowe BY GEORGIA WATSON

I

© SYLVAINE POITAU

N SUFFOLK we are lucky enough to have a number of picturesque coastal towns. In recent years Felixstowe has been slightly overlooked when compared to Southwold and Aldeburgh, but since the multimillion pound regeneration of the pier, the town is rising up to rival these hotspots. Well known as the largest container port in the UK, Felixstowe also offers traditional seaside activities for families and day-trippers. The town has been popular with tourists since the pier was constructed in 1905. It

September/October 2019 Vanilla

became a fashionable resort in the Victorian era when visitors arrived on the newly opened rail service. Today you can still enjoy all those traditional pastimes; amusement arcades at the pier, fish and chips on the beach and a stroll along the promenade. The town is also fortunate enough to continue to have independent shops, cafes and restaurants to explore. Visitors can discover new places and sample different options to the usual high street chains found in so many towns. Those arriving in Felixstowe for

the day can start with breakfast at The Greenhouse Café, the town’s first and only plant-based café. Stop by for a hearty full greenhouse breakfast, pancakes or avocado on toast. Kate White opened the café last year noticing the niche for ethical eating and has been overwhelmed by the support. “We are definitely riding the crest of the emerging wave for greener eating and consuming,” explained Kate, “It’s not just support from the locals, but also from holiday makers and day trippers.”

Kate describes the town as a ‘destination location’ but one that has a sense of community that can be missing at other coastal resorts. “Everyone was worried when Marks & Spencer closed in April, but the traders have pulled together and we are now championing independent shops and restaurants instead,” Kate revealed. She believes that the regeneration of the pier has improved the profile of the seafront and is part of a new era for Felixstowe. After a filling breakfast, holidaymakers can wander down

‘The asking price of properties in Felixstowe have been pushed up by 45% in the past five years.’ to the seafront for a walk along the promenade. Try out the new family entertainment centre on the pier with amusement arcades, penny machines and mini tenpin bowling. For lunch it would have to be fish and chips from The Pier Fish Co., eaten whilst sitting on the beach looking out to sea; rain or shine, it’s the only way! Then the afternoon can be spent exploring the town and its

independent shops. There are many to choose from including, the Suffolk institution that is Coes. Well known for its Ipswich shop, there’s also a Felixstowe branch to pop into, stocking a range of contemporary and classic clothes for both men and women.

If just one day in Felixstowe is not enough, why not book a room at The Orwell Hotel. The Victorian property dates back to 1898 and has been sympathetically decorated with charm and elegance. Its traditional look will allow you to recapture Felixstowe in its heyday of tourism, but of course you’ll have the added bonus of all the mod cons including wi-fi and televisions. If you enjoyed your trip so much

that you’re considering laying down roots in the town, then this could be the right time. Back in 2016, Zoopla named Felixstowe as number 4 on its list of seaside towns with the largest percentage increase in house prices. Then in 2018 Rightmove released information stating that the asking price of properties in Felixstowe have been pushed up by 45% in the past five years. With that in mind, it makes the town an attractive possibility for buyers looking for a coastal retreat and future investment. Well, it’s true what they say, we do like to be beside the seaside! ■

T

HE Greenhouse is delightful. This beautiful plant-based café, a short stroll up from the seafront at Felixstowe has been wowing customers since it opened almost a year ago, and this summer, just as the fashion for vegan food really took off, the Greenhouse’s passion for creating delicious meals without meat, was perfectly timed. It’s a light, bright and airy café, bustling with happy customers and cheerful staff. The food is sumptuous and there’s a lot to choose from. The brilliant brunches include the Brekky Stack – a big vegan sausage patty, large field mushroom and thick tomato slices, stacked in a floury wholemeal bap, or for the sweeter tooth there’s Pancakes-a-Plenty with three fluffy American-style pancakes, served with an array of toppings from blueberries, coconut bacon, bananas, chocolate sauce to maple syrup, lemon and sugar

or chocolate chips and vegan whipped cream. The Mushroom Smash is an epic creation of smashed avocado on granary bread topped with garlic and parsley mushroom, crispy kale and topped with toasted seeds. On Fridays and Saturdays only, there’s the Greenhouse full English – re-worked with homemade hash browns, baked beans, smashed avocado and sautéed mushrooms with white or granary toast. One of the most popular dishes on the menu is their Nossage Feast – their famous fresh vegan sausage roll served with Stokes red onion marmalade, posh crisps and a side salad. There’s also a mammoth Greenhouse burger – a vegan burger with melted cheese, homemade burger sauce, tomato, gherkin and crispy iceberg lettuce towered in a bun. There are other hot dishes on the Daily Specials blackboard – super-seasonal to make the most of the best of Suffolk’s freshest produce, including pasta dishes, curries and soups. The sandwiches, not so humble here, are amazing. The Mediterranean – gorgeous Vanilla September/October 2019

homemade cashew mozzarella with fresh basil, garlic oil and tomato slices – was divine. The TLT – their take on the BLT classic – was fabulously crispy tofu rashers, vegan mayo, crispy lettuce and sweet tomato. The smoked salmon sandwich is re-defined with roasted marinated carrot slices and vegan cream cheese, and a variation on the egg mayo classic is created with chickpeas, vegan mayo, celery and red onion, and of course, there’s cheese and tomato using vegan cheese. All the sandwiches are available on locally baked sourdough bread, on seeded brown baguette, or white or brown bread, served with posh chips and side salad and also available as takeaway, perfect for a seaside picnic. Their exceptional homemade lemonade or a lush oat milk latte would top the whole thing off. Sweet treats are baked daily so there’s also a big choice of gorgeous vegan cakes, scones and cookies. These are also eat in or takeaway – from delicious freshly-baked banana bread, to gooey chocolate treacle brownies. Whether you are a committed vegan or vegetarian, an occasional meat-free eater or just love good food, this Felixstowe find is going to be a keeper. It is a pretty little café, packed with friendliness and fine things to eat. Definitely worth a visit. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

ine Boutique has been a proud part of Felixstowe since 2011. In 2017 we moved to our current premises and became a wine shop you can drink in! Our wines are sourced from vineyards that we have a direct relationship with. The range extends to some unusual wines to keep you all on your toes, so come in and experiment. I have taken over since March this year, from a background in hospitality and wine. This place is a dream to work in! We host tasting events throughout the year, exploring different grapes and regions. We occasionally host pop up food events to compliment our wines, which have been great fun. As I have the chance to talk to you all about wines I have decided I will start with one of my favourites… Italian wines. Italy has the most diverse of climates and produces wines ranging from fruity and crisp to full bodied, rich and smooth. Squinzano is an incredible wine from Puglia in the south, a blend of Negromano and Sangiovese grapes, giving a fruit bomb followed by a kick of pepper and robust abundance! A full-on favourite of everyone here in the Felixstowe shop! Verdicchio is a new wine that has just come in. This wine shows crisp citrus notes with a zingy finish (a great alternative for those who want something different to a Sauvignon Blanc!).

S

uch a stunning seafront location for Felixstowe’s freshest young restaurant, Steak Lobster and Co, just a few moments down the promenade from the Pavilion. This beautiful two-storey eatery is just a pebble’s throw from the waves, and the seafood that stars on the menu is from the very same sea, netted by Felixstowe’s finest fishermen. With seaviews from the wide windows, as well as a smattering of al fresco seating, the setting is a real highlight and whatever the weather, season or time of day, the sea and the sky are the stars in the scenery, framed by trendy banquette seating around scrubbed broad wooden tables, dressed with grey linen napkins. This is a relaxed restaurant with a lovely laidback feel and staff who are so smiley, super friendly and on the ball.

46

The menu is simple and bursting with good honest local seafood and superb steaks. Starters included gorgeously golden crispy panko-crumbed squid rings, tender and tasty and served with a sweet chilli dip. An oozing baked camembert, alongside a warm, garlicky, salty focaccia. Or choose the 70s starter starlet, Prawn Cocktail, or the lobster and sweetcorn chowder. Main delights are of course the local lobsters, straight from the sea. There’s a choice of full or half lobsters, served with balsamic tomato salad and chunky cut chips, garlic and herb butter or thermidor sauce. With the North Sea as the backdrop, nothing could be finer than eating seafood this fresh. The steaks, however, are just superb – they are all ethically locally sourced and dry-aged for 35 days, chargrilled to perfection and topped with tiny button mushrooms. For the ultimate treat, upgrade to surf and turf and add a half lobster or garlicky king prawns to the impressive steak selection – from rump to ribeye. For traditionalists, the main

menu has plenty of other options - mac and cheese, grilled chicken breast with creamy dauphinoise potatoes, pork belly with mustard mash, red cabbage and cider cream sauce or the beer battered fish and chips, the pan fried coley on risotto, as well as halloumi burgers, spicy bean chilli with basmati rice, or fabulous handmade burgers. Desserts are also made in house – there’s a lush lemon meringue or a gorgeous chocolate brownie, crumbles, cheese board and ice creams too. There’s a fantastic Sunday Roast menu if you are tempted for a real treat at the end of the week, and a lunch menu offering lighter bites and specials. The perfect end (or beginning) to any promenade on the fabulous Felixstowe seafront. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

See p81 for stockist’s details

There are some products that develop a cult following and become iconic. Skin Caviar Luxe Cream by Swiss skincare brand La Prairie is one of those products, and one 50ml tub of the facial product will set you back over £300. However, you can save yourself the £300 and simply buy the dupe from Aldi. The Lacura Caviar range of skincare has an almost exact replica of the luxe La Prairie cream: the Caviar Illumination Day Cream and Caviar Night Cream which retail for just £6.99. Last year beauty editors from Grazia, The Daily Mail and The Independent declared it was actually better than La Prairie! Last time Aldi released this skincare line in a sale, it sold out and ended up going for three times the price on eBay. That’s how great this product is!

HYPNOTHERAPY

CAN HELP...

Helen Wyer explains how

H

ypnotherapy is often thought of as helping with stopping smoking, weight loss and fear of flying. Many different fears and phobias such as vomiting, heights, spiders, wasps, needles or driving on motorways can also be treated. Clinical studies now show hypnotherapy to be highly effective in treating anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and psoriasis. Hypnotherapy helps you to learn to change the way you perceive stressful situations as well as giving you the tools you need to help you manage and prevent those anxious feelings and thoughts. Exam stress and confidence in public speaking are both issues I see regularly as well as confidence for interviews. Managing and reducing pain, addictions, depression, insomnia and sports performance are all areas that can be treated using hypnotherapy. The list is long!

THE SUBCONSCIOUS

Hypnotherapy targets the subconscious level, where all our experiences, knowledge, memories, beliefs and habits are stored, helping us access and deal with the root cause of things. Often, we deal with the symptoms, which is a bit like putting a sticking plaster over a wound, only it never heals completely. Getting to the root cause of things helps us to heal from the inside so the changes we make are long lasting. GIVE IT GO!

You may not realise but we all go into hypnosis many times a day, every time we daydream, use our imagination, get absorbed in a good book or film or take on a task with intense concentration. By using your natural ability to do this, hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goals. For further information: Helen Wyer t: 07795 832740 e: www.advancehypnotherapy.biz www.advancehypnotherapy.biz

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love on Zero Empathy

Simon says...

W

ho is Simon and what does he say? He could be your potential new boyfriend but I’ll get to that bit later... I want to talk to you about people that have no (zero) empathy or attachment to other people, and in particular the Narcissist and Sociopath. What is a zero empathy? It’s when a person has no awareness of another’s feelings. Without empathy one is insensitive to others feelings, commits acts of cruelty or lies without batting an eyelid. A Narcissist is someone who is obsessed with an exaggerated sense of themselves, their image and their self importance – they are attention seeking and can be jealous of others. A Sociopath suffers from an antisocial personality disorder, they have a disregard

for others, on an unimaginable level. To both of these personalities, other people become like an inanimate object – like a pen for example. Right now I am taking notes so the pen in my hand is invaluable because it serves a purpose to me, but what if I want to use a different pen? I won’t think twice about grabbing another one, I have no attachment to it, it is just a pen and thus I have no feelings towards it... all normal so far. But in the world of the Zero Empath, a person can have the same value as a pen – great whilst they are useful or pleasing but they can be discarded, played with or broken without a second thought. How can I spot one? Good question – it is hard to do. They can be funny, charming, perhaps attractive, successful... they can often read you like a book. It is with that skill that they will hook their next victim in. Signs? They are a little too perfect, the first date will go really well (because they want you to come back), there will be compliments such as “no one has made me feel like this before/ in years...” You will be made to feel super special; you will appear to have a lot in common; the start of the relationship will be fast; there will be lots of attention and communication initially (known as love bombing); then the attention will be withdrawn causing you to panic, thinking you need to up your game to get it back. At this point you have been drawn in. Listen to your instincts and watch for the signs. Good relationships often start slowly. Take your time to get to know this person and if it doesn’t feel ‘right’ then it’s not and be brave and walk away. The signs will be there, do not ignore then. You deserve better – it’s not actually about what Simon says because chances are he will be lying. ■

WO BUSINESSWOMEN with a long-held vision have opened a new dance, body health and yoga wellbeing studio in Pettistree with the aim of bringing something very special to the local community. Vida Haus is situated in the old Three Tuns pub in Pettistree, by the former A12, and its creators Faye Meakin and Bilyana Dawson have developed the space to meet both spiritual and physical needs. The pair met seven years ago – their partners have been best friends since childhood – and realised they shared a dream to set up a studio that combined their passions and skills; dance, yoga, holistic health and wellbeing, in a calming space, with respect for the environment at its core. Yoga teacher Bilyana Dawson says: “Vida Haus means ‘the house of life’ and this is the essence of what we have created. We want everyone to

feel at home here, whether it’s just for a cup of tea in our café, a dance or yoga class, a holistic treatment, a workshop or simply to be around like-minded people. The space has been designed to be inclusive, to inspire, calm and invigorate – things that everyone needs in their life. It offers people the chance to be part of something bigger and we believe it’s a first for Suffolk.”

ILYANA found yoga just over 12 years ago, and it quickly became a vital healing focus in her life. “My interest in yoga is insatiable and it has helped me find my true liberated self. I have also worked very hard to reduce my personal impact on the environment. “When Faye and I decided to create Vida Haus I saw my dream taking shape; a business where we could make the right choices, work and give back to the community, and care about the

AYE is a professional dancer and has been running her own school, Dilys Dance Studio, and has just given birth to her second son. “I feel incredibly lucky to call dance my job, and being able to fit it around family life has been the best part of all. I think this year will bring many adventures, and Bilyana and I are thrilled to be bringing something we care so much about to the community.” A well as yoga, dancing and ballet classes for adults and children, Vida Haus also offers a range of alternative treatments such as reflexology and massage therapy, as well as craft-based classes such as calligraphy and cookery. The studio is also a place to nourish the body and the café will be open all day for plantbased meals, cakes, smoothies, juices, gourmet coffee and tea, with the focus on local, organic seasonal produce. Bilyana adds: “Vida Haus offers so many possibilities for the community – with a meadow at the back, we think it will be the ideal space to hire for special events, birthdays and supper clubs.” Vida Haus, The Three Tuns, Main Road, Pettistree, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP13 0HW www.vida.haus

HOMES

2019 DESIGN TIPS

T

his is the time of year when we want to make our homes as cosy as possible for the next few months and the good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune doing so. Here are some tips to create a cosy autumn home.

p Brockway Dimension Collection comes in a large range of colours and 3 different qualities.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Creating an autumnal glow in your home is one of the easiest ways to create a room that looks and feels cosy. Lighting helps to set the right mood and ambience and there is nothing better than walking into a room that welcomes you with a warm, amber hue. Lamps are a quick way to do this, and by simply changing the lightbulb to a lower wattage you reduce the glare and create an intimate setting. It goes without saying that a warm toned carpet will always bring a glow to the coldest of rooms.

t Rugs add insulation and will transform a room quickly

LAY DOWN SOME RUGS

Rugs are always a popular choice for use throughout the year but they really come into their own during autumn and winter. Not only can they transform a room quickly thanks to their designs and colour, but they also add another layer of insulation to keep the warmth trapped inside. There are so many styles of rugs available it’s impossible not to find one that will work for

you. The variation in size also offers great options in how you want to position them in one or several rooms. You can pick out a large centrepiece rug that serves as the focal point of the room, or if space permits, buy a few smaller rugs that can be laid in different spots. Please get in touch with the team at Deben Carpets & Flooring for more advice. f c @debencarpets t: 01473 616097

See p81 for stockist’s details

LA BELLE EPOQUE

If the industrial, pared back designs of recent years are not your thing, worry not. Elegantly styled legs and accented curves reminiscent of the early twentieth century are showing signs of a comeback in these bathroom designs. Relive the splendour of ‘La Belle Epoque’ but with these designs you have a modern twist. ● For more advice on bathroom designs, fittings and tiling please visit the Ipswich Bathroom and Tile Centre.

HOMES

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

Home offices and outbuildings for working space are a top priority for many buyers, along with broadband access and speed

with property expert HANNAH COOPE R

A

UTUMN is traditionally one of the busiest periods for the property market in Suffolk. Children head back to school and are preoccupied, the summer months are well and truly behind us and normality has returned. Those looking to make a move have more time to focus on the task in hand, we see a greater level of buyers registering, seeking updates and wishing to be the first in line to hear about recent instructions. We therefore see a flurry of activity with many new properties hitting the open market – and those off-market properties where clients have chosen to offer their homes on a ‘low key’ basis previously, launch fully to the market to coincide with the rejuvenation of the market. Buyers are suddenly more active in their hunt for their next home. Despite Brexit looming and still no predictable outcome, we do

64

however, still foresee a busy few months ahead prior to the naturally quieter late Autumn and Christmas period towards the latter part of the year. The weather this Summer has also played a part in activity – 2018 saw an unusually hot few months with day after day of glorious sunshine. This Summer was somewhat mixed. We are hoping that September continues its trend from the last few years of providing some late sun and that forever-mentioned, longedfor ‘Indian Summer’. This is often one of the other reasons for the spike in activity at this time of year. Better weather during September and October enables us to take full advantage of every aspect of a property, including outside space, prior to those colder and shorter wintery days.

W

E REGULARLY mention gardens – they continue to be one of the top requirements amongst our buyers when making initial enquiries, along with schooling and amenities. However, in more recent years

we have noticed a swing towards other deciding factors; one of which is broadband access and speed. With flexible working more commonplace, so is the ability to work from home. Room to convert an outbuilding or create a working space within a home (if it doesn’t already exist) seems a top priority with many buyers, especially those looking to move out of the City. A large proportion of our buyers commute to London, so proximity to mainline stations is still of key importance when choosing a new home. It is interesting to understand the needs and requirements of our buyers, and how these are changing over time as priorities alter. Being able to understand your buyers has always remained one of the important elements when marketing a property. ■ Hannah Cooper Senior Associate Director Strutt & Parker, The Stables, Wherstead Park, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BJ. 01473 220444

time to shine!

Here’s a big colour story that definitely warms our cockles. We’ve called it yellow, but that’s a bit too simplistic. It’s definitely not the primary yellow colour of a Joules raincoat, for example. This yellow could be described as mustard, ochre, gold or turmeric. It’s yellow’s sophisticated big sister! ● You will see a lot of this shade on velvet chairs and sofas because the warm texture of velvet sets off the warm yellow so beautifully. It's also somehow, a lot easier to come round to the idea of a yellow accent chair or sofa, than it is to the idea of painting the walls ochre.

I don’t have a problem with using stripes and patterns together in a scheme – as long as there’s a common thread of colour (even if it’s not obvious) it should work. It may not be everyone’s taste, but that doesn’t matter. There are so many options to layering up patterns – rugs, cushions, upholstery, even matching wallpaper and curtains together! The new collection from Jane Churchill mixes together multi-colour patterns and geometric prints very successfully in my opinion. It’s an excellent example of how to use bold designs together and it makes for a really eclectic and interesting scheme. Their weave collection features some fabulous textured stripes which can also sit next to their Ikat prints and floral embroideries beautifully. I love the way it can make a room look like it has evolved over time even though it may all have been put together in one design. It’s a much less obvious way of designing but just as pleasing. I think the key thing to remember is that this is your home, so if layer upon layer of neutrals and plains isn’t going to make you happy then use enough pattern to make it feel yours. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

Aqua Eight The

HE FABULOUS Aqua Eight is stylish, slick and remains one of the most popular restaurants in Suffolk. A previous runner-up in not one but two national categories in the prestigious Observer Food and Drink Awards, the food and the service are always outstanding. This summer there’s even more reason to visit, with the amazingly good value 25% off the bill for all Dinner reservations from Sunday to Thursday until 30 September. The two storey pan-Asian restaurant and bar is glamorous making it a perfect place to enjoy cocktails with music in the Aqua Garden from 9.30pm each Saturday. And when you dine at Aqua Eight you always know you are in for a treat – from the interior decor, to the tableware designs and exquisite platters of food that arrive at the table – not one detail is over-looked. The welcome and the service are always professional and efficient, without being over the top, and the staff are more than happy to guide you through the eye-popping menu should you need. As there’s such a huge range of main dishes to choose from, the set menus are a great opportunity

for the curious to find new experiences but with plenty to tempt those who know what they like, with a clever twist on those Asian favourites.

T

HE SET MENUS really highlight the Aqua chefs’ exceptional creativity. Hors D’oevres included pork dumplings, salty and rich accompanied by dips of garlicky sauce, sweet chilli

or hot sauce. There are perfectly puffed crispy squid, delicately rice paper-parcelled rolls of prawn and mango. There’s a lush chicken and sweetcorn soup. Fried soft shell crab with red chilli and curry leaf was deliciously light. Sliced pork bulgogi salad with salsa dressing was sublime. For main dishes the set menu includes chicken katsu in lemon yuzu sauce, Malaysian king prawn

curry and the stunning signature dish of Aqua Eight, Alaskan black cod with miso, served with stir fried vegetables and fragrant steamed rice. The Contemporary set menu has mixed hors d’oeuvres selected by the chefs and mains including stir fry black pepper fillet beef, sweet and sour pork, stir fry mixed vegetables Thai fragrant steamed rice, and an extra dish of chargrilled chicken with soya and lemongrass for tables of four and more.

V

EGETARIANS, vegans and gluten-free diners are also well catered for. There’s even a vegetarian set menu at £20.95 per person with Yakitori vegetable skewers, golden tofu baskets with minced vegetables and then main dishes of pan fry vegetables in teriyaki sauce, aubergine, potato and physalis green curry, stir fry long beans with oyster and garlic and Thai steamed fragrant rice. For very special occasions you can ask the chefs to decide a four course set menu for you at £38.50 per person. This Signature set menu offers the very best of the chefs’ seasonal dishes and favourites. With such exceptional food and excellent service, Aqua Eight deserves its reputation as the finest fusion restaurant in the region, our very own star in the East. bar, this high street treat is hidden in plain sight opposite the library, buzzing and bubbly as a champagne cocktail. The effervescent Rowan, who honed his craft in the Big Smoke as well as nearer to home at the Mistley Thorn, is the proud host. He’s chosen an array of fantastic wines, hip gins and classy cocktails to make this new venture a certain winner with those who want a change from the quintessential English pub. Behind the Victorian glass shop front he’s created a stylishly modern oasis, with a nod to both the European café scene and the glamour of a late night London bar.

he wines and beers are all thoroughly decent and carefully chosen. The gins include local lovelies such as the Lowestoft-based Tiny Tipple Company’s Strawberry and Basil Gin – utterly delicious in one of Rowan’s fantastic gin fizz cocktails. The sparkling wines, include a properly perfect Prosecco from Venetto in Italy, an awardwinning organic English bubbly from Sussex and the impressive mousse of French favourite fizz, Heidsieck and Co. Cocktails include Aperol Spritz (Aperol, prosecco, soda and orange wedge); Espresso Martini (espresso, vodka, Kahlua and

sugar syrup); Jack and Black (Jack Daniels, Tia Maria, lime and Coke) or Hanky Panky (Bombay Sapphire gin, sweet vermouth, Fernet-Branca and lemon juice). The Estuary is a breath of fresh air on the East Coast and marks a turning of the tide in the revival of this little river town. Easy going and effortlessly cool, Estuary deserves its praise and definitely a visit. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

The Place to Eat The

Vanilla Reader Review

T

HIS month we discovered an unexpected little gem: The Place to Eat restaurant that is situated on the upper floor of Glasswells, the Ipswich furniture and home accessories store on Ranelagh Road. Unexpected in the main, because they serve such an amazing range of well-prepared and tasty food – so much more than you would anticipate from an in-store café. And rather than being tucked away at the back of the shop, this light and airy eaterie takes pride of place on a mezzanine floor suspended over the main showroom, making it the perfect place to contemplate whether or not to buy that gorgeous three-piece suite! Our first visit was for lunch and we weren’t disappointed. There are always daily specials to choose from on the blackboard along with regulars such as mango and sweet chilli beef, mackerel tart, honey and mustard chicken and chickpea curry. Lighter options include paninis, tortilla wraps and toasted sandwiches, but on this occasion I chose the Sunday roast – a classic roast beef with all the trimmings that even I couldn’t

76

polish off. My friend opted for the quiche of the day – a generous portion of bacon and onion quiche served with crunchy salad, homemade coleslaw and local new potatoes. We followed with desserts of peach and raspberry crumble and an iced lemon parfait and the two-course price of £11.50 per head has to make this one of the best-valuefor-money restaurants in town. It has to be said though that the pièce de résistance must be their selection of freshly made scones and cakes. At lunch we couldn’t do it justice so we vowed to return later in the week just for afternoon tea. It turns out that The Place To Eat is an open secret – the café is buzzing and busy midweek and most folk seemed to be making a beeline for the cakes! Victoria sandwich, lemon drizzle, caramel shortcake, chocolate brownie, coffee and

walnut… to name just a few. Traditional cream and afternoon teas are available from 2.30pm to 4.40.pm (until 3.30pm on Sundays).

T

HIS little restaurant ticks all the boxes: extra friendly waiting staff, generous portions, homemade food, pleasant ambience and convenient parking. The perfect conditions to persuade your other half to buy some new dining room furniture after all! REVIEW: LAURA HALL

Mark Sholl Café/Deli, New Street Market

My East Coast Life

Mark Sholl describes himself as a “cook” and owns and runs three local food businesses; The Suffolk Catering Company, Leo’s Deli in Framlingham, and more recently the Café/Deli in the New Street Market in Woodbridge. He lives in Framlingham with his wife and young family.

What brought you to Suffolk? I’m originally a Lancashire lad, and I use to come to Framlingham to visit family. I then worked in London, and subsequently met my wife, who is local, and decided to move here. Framlingham is a lot nicer than London in so many ways and after 14 years here I feel very much a local.

People… the people who produce it, appreciate it, make it accessible and those who eat and love it. Food is very emotional and evocative, it can instantly take you to a particular place, or back to childhood. When people come into my delis we talk in great detail about cheese or bread and we build a relationship that you just can’t get in a supermarket. We share our knowledge and love of food, it’s a two-way street, a mutual passion.

How did you start Leo’s Deli? I don’t have a background in the food business, but I have always loved and been fascinated by great food. Leo’s was an existing business and it came up for sale about 10 years ago, so I grabbed the opportunity. I then started to cook professionally and launched The Suffolk Catering Company, so the timing was great and my career in food was set.

How did you get involved in New Street Market? The market wanted a café and deli and asked me if I wanted to take it on. I thought it was a great idea to have somewhere in the market that was dedicated

to offering great food and it’s a wonderful space. It’s become a destination for shopping and all the businesses there care very deeply about what they are doing. We are all focused on quality and we support each other as a community 100%. We all offer something unique, great products, knowledge and creative flair – I think that’s essential these days, you need to stand out.

What is your favourite Suffolk produce? There is so much to choose from but, if I had to choose, Butterworth’s Coffee is excellent, and I am very particular about my coffee! My cheese supplier Hamish Johnston is the most knowledgable and helpful person to work with, and my local veg and meat suppliers are all superb. I try to buy organic and local where possible, especially for our salads.

What do you do when you’re not working? With three businesses to run I don’t have much time off, as you can imagine, but when I do I like to spend it with my family and walking along the coast. It’s important to spend quality time with the right people. Good food and good people, that’s what life’s all about.
