Sam Simpson from JMM explains why Lorna is our winner: “Lorna has such a beautiful face and I love the fact that’s offset with her really punky, short, bleached hair. Once you put her in front of a camera, she just radiates. She’s a natural. “She has the whole package, looks, height (5’10), a great personality, intelligence and drive, all of which are essential to succeed as a top model. She could really move, the whole team just loved her.” So what’s next? Lorna has just finished her A levels at Farlingaye, so JMM will take her to London in the summer to meet some major agencies. As she’s taking a gap year, hopefully she’ll be working there, and abroad, very soon.”

Cake & Catwalk Lynn bares all! I hate to say this but... there comes a time when we can show off TOO MUCH FLESH. That is unless you are by the beach or promenading on your holidays. The look this summer has been to expose the shoulders and the upper back. It’s a nice look and some of the styles on offer a very nice but be careful ladies... Take a good hard look at what is left showing. Is it toned? Is it too fleshy? Too skinny? Is the skin too pimply? Are there some wrinkles that were not there last year? Choose a look that shows off the very best parts of you and your body. Being slightly understated, unless you are in the bloom of youth is definitely the way to wear it. I purchased a little number whilst it was 28 degrees, got it home and realised that I had made the fatal error and yes, it looked as we say ‘mutton’. I now wear it with a little shirt or jacket to cover the over-exposed and it looks fabulous. Look Fabulous ladies! LYNN TURNER

Autumn is on the horizon, although with a bit of luck we'll enjoy many more weeks of sunshine and warmth, but strappy sundresses and silver sandals already no longer feel appropriate. If like me, you want to drag out your summer wardrobe as skimpier numbers with t-shirts long as possible, but you’re ready underneath. nd for those of you who follow my column, I’m back on the white shirt soapbox again. There is nothing quite like a white shirt to make you look and feel fabulously healthy and fresh and show off that touch of a tan achieved from your very careful sunbathing. With a long sleeve rolled up, you can adapt easily to changes in temperature. Another transition winner is black. A black t-shirt, black short sleeved dress, black jeans, black shirt (basically anything black) but lightweight. If you have a bit of colour you’ll look super tanned in the softer sunlight of late summer/early autumn and black is soooo forgiving and basically a best friend whenever. ECORUS FITWEAR is a fresh and

exciting brand of feel good fitwear for ladies with busy lifestyles. With an eye catching range of leggings, capris, shorts, tops and accessories all in production and set to hit the scene in early 2018. When Amanda Crichton started running after the birth of her third child, she didn’t even imagine the thrilling path her favourite pastime would take her down. Almost five years later, the Ipswich-based mother of three children has racked up some serious running miles – both on the road and in the gym. Now, Amanda, who is already a successful small business owner, is on track with a new venture – to bring an array of beautifully fitting activewear to ladies everywhere. Decorus, meaning beautifully fitting in Latin, was born from a belief that active wear for women should not only look good, it should feel great, fit well and be fit for purpose too. But it wasn’t until Amanda’s leggings started falling down when she was out running that she channelled her ideas into action, bringing on board a designer, sourcing a manufacturer and starting up her new business. “Our body shape changes as we move through our mid to late thirties and, with the busy lifestyles that we lead today, active wear that’s designed by women, for women is incredibly important” says Amanda. “Decorus Fitwear has been designed with pockets in all the right places, supporting where it’s needed using a combination of stretchy and skimming fabrics where it matters most.”

The first collection from Decorus Fitwear is in production and will hit the stores early next year. If you’d like to make sure you’re among the first to experience this stunning revolution in ladies fitwear, you can follow Amanda and the team on Facebook and Twitter @DecorusFitwear

erridges is an independent, privately owned business offering unrivalled service and expertise in all aspects of the jewellery trade. They have earned a glowing reputation both for the quality and exclusivity of their jewellery, and for their warm and friendly approach to customer service. Now into their third decade, Christopher Hardman, owner, together with his wife Angela are constantly striving to offer their customers items that are not generally available on the high street and that give the wearer a definite ‘wow’ factor. The showroom in the heart of Ipswich houses international brands such as Fope fine Italian gold jewellery, Georg

Jensen contemporary Danish silver jewellery and beautiful cultured pearls from Schoeffel. Christopher’s passion for antique jewellery ensures that half of their stock is from all the classical periods such as Victorian and Art Deco. Unlike the new stock, the antique pieces are truly unique and cannot be repeated which makes them even more appealing. Together with their stylish jewellery, Christopher also offers clients a jewellery valuation service, undertaken on the premises, and has been recently appointed as a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers. The prestigious achievement was awarded in recognition of thirty years’ work in mentoring and monitoring fellow valuers

across the country to ensure that valuations undertaken adhere to the strict standards demanded by the National Association of Jewellers. Christopher is one of only three valuers in East Anglia to hold this title. “All valuations contain a detailed description, photograph and of course value,” explained Christopher. “The valuation is stored on a secure website where it can be accessed by any authorised insurance company eliminating the need for paper copies. A detailed description is not only vital when making an insurance claim it also helps the police when it comes to tracking down stolen items.”

erridges is also home to a restaurant on the first floor and is a haven of calm in the busy town centre. The restaurant has been a firm favourite with people in the town for many years and is managed by Louise Norman, who has real flair and passion for seasonal ingredients and good home cooking. This is reflected in the array of dishes found on the menu and daily specials board, which earn her many a compliment from contented customers each week. The restaurant is open from 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, serving a delicious range of home-cooked food, including daily specials and home made cakes and desserts. ■

“I feel so relieved that we were able to reach an amicable agreement… Jack and Emily can enjoy their new adventure knowing that I will also remain a part of their lives”

Staying in touch with children living overseas MY PROBLEM: I split from my wife, Kelly, some years ago. We have two children, Jack and Emily, who are now ten and six. Things have always been fairly amicable with regards to the children so I got the shock of my life when they told me that their mum and her new partner, Joe, might be going to live in Canada and taking them too. I panicked – it sounded as though she had her bags packed and ready to go. I was terrified I wouldn’t see Jack and Emily again. MIKE, WOODBRIDGE

34

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

Kelly and I both take responsibility when it comes to the care of our children. I look after them every other weekend, pick them up from school on certain days of the week and we split the holidays evenly. They’re a big part of my life, so when Jack and Emily casually mentioned one day that they might be going to live in Canada, I felt numb. I called Kelly immediately to find out what was going on and she explained that Joe had been offered a new 12-month

contract by his employer. They were planning to leave at the end of the summer term, taking Jack and Emily with them. She seemed to have it all worked out and it felt like she hadn’t taken my feelings into consideration at all. My only thought was: “I need to stop this”. For all I knew, 12 months could turn into years and I was worried sick that I wouldn’t see them again. I also had big concerns about their schooling and what little involvement I might have in the arrangements for their future. Vanilla August/September 2017

arker Gotelee had dealt with our divorce extremely well, so they were my first port of call. I phoned and was put through to Amanda from the family law team, whose calm and efficient manner instantly put me at ease. She asked if I could come into the office the next day so that we could discuss all the options I had available. When we met, Amanda explained that it is always preferable to try and deal with this type of situation amicably through correspondence and negotiation. Given that Kelly and Joe were planning to leave the UK soon, however, she suggested that I obtain a Prohibited Steps Order (PSO), which would mean I could stop them from carrying out their immediate plans. She told me that a PSO is an order granted by the Court in family cases that prevents a parent carrying out certain events involving a child. For example, changing their name, undergoing medical treatment, or, in my case, taking a child abroad without express permission from the other parent. Although an emergency measure, Amanda said that, in her experience, a PSO can be a valuable way to create time for couples to think things through properly and work out the best arrangements for the children. Amanda explained that if I had a PSO granted by the Court and Kelly continued with her plans, she would be in breach of the Order. Amanda prepared the necessary paperwork and

submitted my application to the Court. Once we received a date for the first Court hearing I was able to sleep a little easier at night, knowing that Jack and Emily shouldn’t be going anywhere until Kelly and I had discussed things thoroughly and reached some kind of agreement.

I

n the days that followed, Amanda spoke to Kelly on the phone and explained the reasons for the actions I had taken. I wanted Kelly to understand that I only had Jack and Emily’s best interests at heart. Through negotiation and a number of proposals put forward via Amanda, Kelly and

I were able to come up with an arrangement meaning that she could go ahead with her plans but also allow me to retain contact with the children while they were away. For example, Kelly agreed to me having regular Skype calls and physical visits. The arrangements were set out before the Court and approved, meaning that the PSO itself was no longer required, but to remove any ambiguity, Kelly and I had an Order drawn up setting out the arrangements we had agreed. I feel so relieved that we were able to reach an amicable agreement with Amanda’s help. Jack and Emily can enjoy their new adventure knowing that I will also remain a part of their lives. ■

OAKLAND HALL Helping your little stars to shine brighter!

AKLAND HALL Day Nursery, near Ipswich, was opened three years ago to provide the kind of idyllic nursery care that parents dream of in a friendly, nurturing environment where learning is fun. Managing Director Gillian Dovey says: “We understand that, for parents, finding the right preparation nursery for their children can be daunting. There are so many things to think about, but at Oakland Hall we aim to genuinely meet all the needs of the modern working parent, and offer an unprecedented service. “We strive to offer each child the best possible start in life, focusing on their educational, spiritual, physical and creative needs, building a strong foundation so they are confident, rounded individuals when they leave here for full-time education. There is no other nursery in Suffolk that is fully inclusive and offers this standard of education and opportunities for young children.” Oakland Hall accepts children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years and it’s a wonderful environment for them. This lovingly designed and decorated 15th century Grade II listed building is set in two acres of gardens and has a homely, friendly atmosphere that helps both parent and child to calmly adjust and feel at ease. The glittering jewel in the crown at Oakland Hall is their staff, a highly qualified and dedicated team of early years specialists. “All our key staff have a degree in

36

childcare. Their level of expertise and experience is what sets us apart,” says Gillian. Children at Oakland Hall receive the highest level of nurturing and mental and physical stimulation designed to meet the specific needs of their age group. The baby suite for ‘Little Acorns’ from 3 months to 1 year focuses on care, activity, rest and learning. There is also a specialised play activity frame, messy play room, milk kitchen, principle classroom and sleep room. Two-year-old toddlers, or ‘Super Saplings’ spend time in the fullyinteractive learning suite, and they can get much-needed rest during their busy day in the ‘Glamping’ room, which has individual Gruffalo ready-beds. Gillian says: “Our older ‘Mighty Oaks’ benefit from more structure, so we take them on day trips, or they can perform the lead in the annual Christmas performance. At the end of their time here, we give all our leavers a graduation ceremony.”

O

LD FASHIONED values such as politeness and helping others plays a vital role at Oakland Hall, and this comes into play at mealtimes, too. Children are encouraged to lay the tables, taught good table manners and older children often help with the little ones in the dining hall. The exceptional service at Oakland Hall really delivers on the promise to help lighten the load for busy parents. For example

their ‘to bed’ service means pupils can be bathed and changed into bedclothes before their parents pick them up. But parents can rest assured that all the trips, weekly swimming, ‘to bed’ service, Calpol, nappies, snacks, meals, suncreams, sun hats and waterproofs are all included in the fees and part of the every day programme. Three years after it opened, Oakland Hall is a hub of activity and clearly a big hit with both parents and children. “We had a fantastic Sports Day this year – the Baby Crawl was a huge success – and a very well attended evening for parents showing the children’s artwork in our annual art exhibition,” says Gillian. From September, Oakland Hall will be offering 30 hours of free childcare in line with the new government scheme. ■

WHAT MAKES A CHILD SUCCEED AT SCHOOL? As thousands troop back to school with heavy hearts and shiny shoes, this is a good time for parents to consider how we can help our children succeed...

W

hile all parents want their children to do well in school, most of us haven’t got a clue about creating a climate that makes children want to learn. Parents have more power than anyone to motivate their children to study, but they can’t force school success by helicoptering around over every detail of their child’s life. Instead, they need to provide the kind of secure, thoughtful, encouraging environment at home, from which children can go out and forge their own successful way through school and beyond. Here are the areas that experts say parents need to focus on:

August/September 2017 Vanilla

GOOD ATTITUDES

Children do what we do, not what we say. A classic experiment in the US found that by far the best way to encourage children to be generous was for their parents and teachers to show generous behaviour – without a word about it. So, model what you want your child to imitate. Keep anxiety about school down and encourage them to see learning as interesting, enjoyable and exciting. Foster a positive problem-solving attitude. Not “I can’t do this”, but “How can I do this?” Keep the pressure off, and show a genuine interest in what they are doing at school.

What our schools say... “A child does well at school when they feel happy, when they feel engaged and interested in what they are learning in the classroom, and when they find other activities they are passionate about. School must be exciting and not a dull rote learning trudge.” Neil Tetley, Headmaster of Woodbridge School

GOOD HEALTH

Dull, sluggish children can’t do well in school. Brains and bodies are too intimately related. To give just one example: omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as

39

LEARNING

‘Good choices are at the heart of good learning, whether it’s when to do homework, who to choose as a friend, or what subjects to take in the sixth form’ salmon, walnuts and kiwi fruit, help support brain synapses, which in turn help turn on critical brain functions such as memory and learning. There are thousands of others. That’s why it’s vital that your child has a good diet and enough exercise and sleep – even when it means unpopular decisions like being strict about junk food and banning electronics from the bedroom. GOOD RELATIONSHIPS

In school, children need to get on well with classmates and teachers, work in groups, deal with bullies, and know how to ask for help when they need it. So show them what good relationships look like. Try not to be over-critical of yourself or your child. Aim for friendly, honest and straightforward dealings with others, and fight any school battles firmly but without blame and anger.

younger children to make simple choices – grapes or banana for snack? Teach older ones to weigh options and think about consequences. Talk about shortand long-term benefits, and help older children learn how to examine their priorities and be true to themselves in the choices they make.

40

“The ingredients for a successful education are clear. Pupils need teachers who have a passion for their subject, and who catch their imagination with interesting challenges that will develop their potential. Children flourish with a comprehensive and caring pastoral system and benefit greatly from expressing themselves outside the classroom, whether through sport, drama or music – or all three. At Ipswich School we firmly believe that all these contribute to a rounded education and create happy and fulfilled children. And no child does better at school than a happy one.”” Nicholas Weaver, Headmaster,

GOOD LEARNING

Lay the groundwork for school with lots of relaxed reading, talking, noticing and experiencing. Encourage your child to see that learning is a balance between enjoyment and effort. It’s fun to learn a new thing such as adding up, but it takes concentration and repetition to master it. Get them to see how good it feels to acquire new skills. Teach them that learning is a journey that everyone does in their own way, and that setbacks and mistakes are part of it. People are there to help, but no one can do it for them.

GOOD CHOICES

Good choices are at the heart of good learning, whether it’s when to do homework, who to choose as a friend, or what subjects to take in the sixth form. Allow

What our schools say...

GOOD ORGANISATION

Children get more from school if they live in a well-run home and learn to manage their “stuff”. UK researchers have found,

Ipswich School

for example, that dirty, noisy and cluttered homes contribute directly to poor health, and therefore learning, in preschoolers. Manage family time for calm mornings and a proper breakfast. Children thrown late and frazzled into school lose significant learning time. Help your child keep their school things organised and arrangements clear in their minds – especially important if they are living between two homes. Teach older children how to plan ahead and how to manage their possessions and money. ■ Extracts from ‘The Six Secrets of School Success’ by Hilary Wilce

It’s fantastic fun for children of all ages, so if you want to splash like a swordfish, dive like a duckling, or backstroke like a barracuda, then First Strokes Swim School near Ipswich is the place to be this summer. First Strokes Swim Schools have been running for 17 years and they are the only bespoke, purpose-built teaching pools in the UK. Ipswich is the latest town to benefit from the facility; this pool was opened two years ago by Olympic swimming star Sharron Davies MBE, and it’s definitely a hidden gem in the area. Alastair Dovey, who owns the pool, says: “We are thrilled that

42

this has become a very popular place in the community for general public swimming, lessons and much more. “We have the pleasure of teaching over 800 students and school children each week – that’s a lot of competent, confident swimmers. Our aim is to ensure that children are not afraid of the water and learn the right way to swim, and we do that by making sure it’s always fun and enjoyable.” First Strokes offers expert tuition and classes for all ages and abilities, from little beginners who are starting from scratch, to the more confident ones that need a bit more attention, plus adults and club swimmers. Lessons run throughout the holidays and you

can join any time you like. “We also offer private one-toone lessons over the holidays, and small group classes with waterbased teachers and assistants,” says Alastair. “Our Baby Splash sessions are very popular, too. “All our staff are highly motivated and qualified. They don’t just teach at the pool, they also take the time to present water safety days at local schools, ensuring that all our children are safe this summer.”

Mind over matter H

ypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that uses the power of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious changes to our learned thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It can increase self-confidence and self-esteem, improve your performance in interviews and exams, banish driving test nerves, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, IBS, OCD, relationship and health issues, fears and phobias, and even help with natural child birth. So how does hypnotherapy work? Anita Hughes, Ipswichbased hypnotherapist explains: “Hypnotherapy is an altered state of mind, a relaxed state, similar to daydreaming. Have you ever driven through somewhere on autopilot and afterwards can’t remember driving that particular route? Hypnotherapy is very much like that. Most people find

44

it very enjoyable and relaxing. “Don’t worry, you cannot be made to do or say anything you don’t want to do or say. During this state I can talk to your subconscious mind to allow it to help you make positive changes to your life.”

A

nita is a fully qualified and licensed member of the Hypnotherapist Society, who has been running her private practice in Ipswich since 2008. She has helped many people combat crippling fears and phobias. “I had always struggled with the thought of flying for many years, and although I have flown many times, it was always an extremely stressful and anxious time,” Anthony, 51, explains. “After having seen Anita for one session, I can now be relaxed and calm for the whole journey, from packing my

suitcase to go, right through to unpacking on my return. It has been an amazing transformation.” Another patient, Stephen, describes his experience: “Anita helped me to go through the toughest and darkest days of my life and got me back on my feet. I was a little skeptical about the idea of hypnosis, but I went to see her as a last resort. “I slept for the first time in years the whole night after the first session only. After a few more sessions I managed to get myself together and she got me out of my depressed state successfully. I wish I had known her long before as she would have saved me a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering.” For more information visit anitahughes.co.uk. Dermalift facial Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements. Strong, durable and natural in appearance and an excellent fixed alternative to removable dentures. An implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone, acting just like a tooth root, and left to fuse with the bone over the span of a few months. After this time, the implant can then be used to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. IMPLANT OFFER Dr Andrew of A&L Clinics is a highly experienced implant specialist – he

Below: Jenny before embarking on a course of Lipofirm Plus Radiofrequency facials.

illa Van PORT RE

“I can’t believe I’ve hit my forties and everyone says I look my best ever” Jenny began having Lipofirm Plus Radio Frequency facial treatments at The Scultura Clinic in 2015. We recently caught up with Jenny to find out how she is getting on…

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO HAVE LIPOFIRM PLUS FACIAL REJUVENATION TREATMENTS?

I had reached a certain age and felt I needed something more than just a normal facial could offer. I did not want to have Fillers or Botox. The attraction of the Lipofirm Plus treatment is that it is completely non-invasive, this was very important to me. HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR FIRST TREATMENT AND CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW IT FELT?

At my first treatment the therapist, Dionne, put me completely at ease, by explaining the procedure fully before she began. The treatment was very soothing and relaxing. August/September 2017 Vanilla

Left: Jenny looking radiant after a course of treatments and a Dream On makeover

HOW LONG WAS IT BEFORE YOU REALLY SAW SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS?

I saw results after the first treatment. I noticed an improvement to my skin’s tone and texture and over time the elasticity of my skin has improved greatly. This is because the collagen rebuilds with every treatment. WHY DO YOU HAVE TOP UP TREATMENTS AND HOW OFTEN?

I have top up treatments once a month. It’s my little treat – one hour of total relaxation is bliss! And, of course, I want to maintain the youthful results already achieved. n For more information contact The Scultura Clinic, Mendlesham Health Centre, Chapel Road, Mendlesham, IP14 5SQ. T:01379 678696 E: info@thesculturaclinic.co.uk

Dr Tanna, The Scultura Clinic: “These pictures demonstrate very impressive results, particularly a softening of the naso labial folds (the crease that runs from the side of the nose to the corner of the lips) thanks to increased volume in the mid-face/cheek area. When this area loses volume it has a significant age enhancing effect. The increase in volume is due to the radiofrequency treatment stimulating the deeper layers of the skin to produce more collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). It also results in an overall improvement in skin tone and quality, giving a much more fresher, brighter and youthful appearance. She’s looking absolutely fantastic after her course of treatments and we are so happy to have had a part to

play in that.”

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective Q: I don’t understand why this person has made me feel this bad? A: It’s happened to all of us... we have all done it too. ‘Emotional Dumping’ (the bad, unhappy and unhealed moments) of our pasts onto an innocent bystander. We are shocked, saddened, even heartbroken when this happens to us. We lose ourselves. We play the scene/s over and over in our minds trying to understand and process the behaviour of the ‘emotional dumper’. Generally we ruminate over our shortcomings and wonder ‘what did I do wrong?’ Here’s the thing – possibly nothing! This doesn’t have anything to do with you or your actions. The reason why we can’t process the behaviour of the ‘emotional dumper’ is because it isn’t ours to process. So what should I do, you ask? Good and valid question! Write down who and what you are. All the good stuff that makes you you (e.g. parent, artist, great friend, masterchef, salsa diva...). Now you have remembered all you are, you simply become that person again by doing those things. As you become yourself again, the emotional pain and the unwanted baggage of the dumper mysteriously goes back to them. Once again you can take control of your life and your emotions, leaving other people’s baggage for them to deal with.

BEAUTY LESSONS

1

Protect your skin from UV rays

Whilst you may have hated wearing sunscreen and sun hats in your teen years, protecting your skin is incredibly important. As well as protecting you from harmful rays, it also slows downs the signs of aging. Never leave the house without it.

2

Follow a good skincare regime

Taking care of your skin is a must. From cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising, it’s important to follow that age old routine.

3

Don’t dye your hair too early

Virgin hair is often the key to the healthiest hair possible. Once you start dying your hair it’s almost impossible to stop. Growing out hair dye or highlights takes a long time.

4

Drink plenty of water

5

Don’t wash your hair everyday

6

Take your makeup off before bed

7

Invest in a good foundation

Water is the most important thing to get healthy skin and hair. We all know this!

Washing your hair too much can cause dandruff and it can strip your hair of its natural oils.

Never go to bed with your make up on is number one in every beauty rule book.

If you’re acne-prone or suffer from oily skin, a good foundation can solve all your problems. It’s important to invest in an expensive foundation that can give you coverage but not encourage your spots.

WELLBEING

T

PENNY JONES PILATES

UCKED AWAY in an old barn behind the Suffolk Food Hall overlooking the River Orwell in Wherstead outside Ipswich you’ll find the Penny Jones Pilates studio. Penny and her team of teachers are highly trained and have more than 100 years of teaching experience between them. They’ve been well known in the area for some time for mat work classes but they now offer one to one, and small group teaching, on the full studio apparatus. The studio equipment looks intriguing. The Reformer is the best known of the three main pieces, it’s like a single bed, moved with the aid of springs, but Penny has the complete range of Cadillac and Wunda chair, plus lots of barrels and arcs to be able to offer the full repertoire. Joseph Pilates, German by birth, was interned on the Isle of Man during the First World War. As an early pioneer of physiotherapy

54

he was asked to work with wounded prisoners of war. With little equipment to help him he saw the potential of the old hospital beds to which many were confined. Using the bed springs, he invented the equipment to provide resistance and assistance in rehabilitation. Looking at the modern pieces, they are now beautifully engineered but you can see how they resemble those old beds. The precision and control the springs provide make it perfect for those who are recovering from illness or injury but can also be a real challenge if you have only used your own body weight and gravity for resistance. Combined with the bespoke attention of the small or individual classes, apparatus sessions are very effective.

P

ENNY’S STUDIO is currently offering classes of up to three people on Tuesday Wednesday

and Thursday afternoons. Each session is tailored for the individual need of a client. The cost of a small shared class is £25. Private classes are £60 for an hour and can be booked anytime when a teacher and the studio are available. You can also share a private class with a partner or friend for £70. The studio continues to offer a wide range of mat classes six days, and four evenings a week. Many classes are suitable for beginners and people who prefer to work at a gentle pace. Penny says “Everyone can benefit from a good Pilates class, apparatus or mat. From elite athletes to those struggling to deal with everyday mobility, teenagers to ninety somethings, no one is excluded”. YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED

...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

WHY DO MY NAILS FLAKE?

There are a number of possibilities... soaking your hands in hot water whilst doing the dishes, prolonged water exposure, exposure to dry air, even hot baths for a long period of time will all cause nails to flake. Picking and peeling off old nail polish should be discouraged as it will also remove the protective layer of the natural nail and the condition of your nails will deteriorate. Nail polish helps seal the layers together while your natural nail recovers. And don’t forget to use plenty of cuticle oil and hand cream for extra hydration. Top Tip: Buy a ‘brush on’ treatment (there are lots to choose from) and treat yourself to a course of manicures. MY SKIN IS DULL AND LIFELESS CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SAFE AND EFFECT TREATMENT?

It really depends on if you prefer a hands-on or machine-based treatment – we can offer you both types of treatment to help improve your skin's condition. Microdermabrasion uses a stream of non-allergenic crystals to remove your skins outermost layers of

56

dead cells revealing younger, healthier looking skin. The skin’s appearance is further improved through increased collagen and elastin production as your body produces a new layer of skin. If you prefer a hands-on treatment, a Resurfacing Facial is a great alternative to microdermabrasion. Perfect for dehydrated, dry and dull looking skin, resurfacing facials will leave your skin glowing and appear brighter and much softer. Top Tip: Most salons offer a free consultation. Take up the offer – it will give you a chance to check out the salon and all that they have on offer. MY LIPSTICK ‘BLEEDS’ INTO FINE LINES. ANY TIPS OR TRICKS TO STOPS THIS HAPPENING?

‘Bleeding’ lipstick is most likely to occur when you have dry lips so make sure your lips are well moisturised. Try a lip primer underneath your lip colour, this will fill in lines and allow your lipstick to glide on without bleeding. A good lip balm can also have the same effect. Then use a lip liner – they’re made from wax or powder and act as a barrier to lipstick, preventing it from feathering out beyond the natural lip line. Top Tip: Makeup gurus swear by applying translucent powder on the outlines of your lips to fix bleeding lipstick. n

How to get a discount on your dream...

DESIGNER KITCHEN B

uying a new kitchen can be a terrifying task. There always seem to be so many advertised special offers and huge variations in price, quality and service which makes it difficult for the average buyer to know if they are getting value for money. Kitchens are now by far the most expensive room in the home. In fact, the average spend on a kitchen – now the central space in modern homes – has increased by 45 per cent alone since 2005. Putting in a new kitchen is a sizable investment - so it makes sense to choose wisely. The good news is that Howdens Joinery, Britain’s biggest trade-only manufacturer and supplier of fitted kitchens, are now making it easier for the general public to have access to trade discounts. Meaning there

64

are amazing savings, usually around 20%, to be made without any compromise on design or quality. So what’s the catch then? Well, there’s only one – to take advantage of the amazing trade discounts, you will need to use your own installer or builder with an account at Howdens Joinery, but they are happy to guide you through the process and can put you in touch with local, recommended fitters. They believe that your local builder is best placed to give you the convenience and experience of a professional installation. Value for money doesn’t mean less design choice either. Howdens offer a range of 70 inspirational kitchen designs in a choice of colours and finishes along with accessories,

worktops, sinks, taps and a vast range of appliances from brand leaders such as Neff, Bosch, AEG and Rangemaster. The public are welcome to visit their showroom, view the kitchens online or through a brochure and receive free design advice and plans. PLANNING AND DESIGN

The challenge is to combine practical needs without compromising visual appeal, so you can enjoy an efficient, beautiful space for years to come. This is why Howdens have created two kitchen design guides tailored toward the traditional or modern, depending on your preferred style. Each will guide you through planning your layout, materials, colours and finishes, fixtures and fittings,

appliances, storage and much more, to help you get the most out of your new kitchen. Part of the deal is a free home survey and kitchen design service, which you can either organise through your chosen installer or do directly with your local branch. One of their highly trained and imaginative surveyors will come to your home to measure up and advise on a kitchen design that will suit your needs. You can then visit your local, Ipswich branch to view the plans and 3D images of your bespoke design and to ensure you are 100% happy with the designs. As soon as your builder is ready so is your kitchen – Howdens will deliver your pre-constructed cabinets as soon as you need! ■

Between 1st - 28th October, Howdens hold a genuine sale with even more savings to be had... another 5-10%. There are Emma Bridgewater mugs and a fabulous Asian Cookbook waiting for Vanilla readers who order a kitchen. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to save yourself thousands!

Bring the family together with

OPEN PLAN LIVING

T

HE WAY we live in our homes has changed dramatically over the years. Most families have two working parents, and when they come home from work, neither of them want to be stuck in the kitchen alone, cooking dinner, while the rest of the family is somewhere else in the house. The cooks want the walls to come down, making the modern, open plan home incredibly popular and creating more light and space. With the kitchen, living and dining areas all open, this creates an amazing space for socialising, spending quality time with family

66

members and helping the kids with their homework. To complete the look, large glazed doors to the garden are a great way to bring the garden into the home and also extend your living space into the outdoors. But what if you want to create privacy or cosiness in your open plan space? You can have it both ways by fitting concealed pocket doors. These are sliding doors that retract into the wall cavity, so you can bring them out to split a larger room into two – perhaps for warmth in winter, or to create a pop-up play area for kids when mum and dad want a bit of peace and quiet! All structural alterations need to comply with building regulations, and could include removing walls, installing sliding / folding glazed doors or building an extension. The works will need to be inspected and signed off by a Building Inspector, failure to comply with this could cause serious issues when trying to sell your house. Extensions may require planning permission depending on the size of the extension and location of

your property. The first step is to talk to a building contractor that offers a design service, an architect or a structural engineer. To complete the look everybody wants a fabulous kitchen. Kitchen styles have fallen into two styles, whether it’s the flush, minimalist look, featuring a lot of grey and white, with high gloss doors, clean lines and stainless steel. The other popular style is Shaker, which is timeless, with natural oak or painted finishes; very simple and beautiful. Other features that can enhance the look and compliment the look are timber or stone flooring, a log burner, roof lights, flush wall mounted TVs, LED lighting and low maintenance composite decking to mention but a few. It’s all about flexibility, and creating the best of all possible modern worlds. ■

CAKE SHOP BAKERY EXPANDS

Growing demand for real bread and delicious cakes and pastries from customers in their Woodbridge shop as well as from local hotels, restaurants and retailers has led family-run, Cake Shop Bakery, to open a new bakery facility to increase production by 20% to keep up with demand and grow the business. The new bakery at Bentwaters Business Park, north of Woodbridge, started baking in June, after a major fit out and investment in new equipment. David Wright, the third generation, of the family to run the business says “Our first day baking at Bentwaters was like everyone’s first day! It’s been challenging for me and all our experienced bakers to get used to the new equipment and space but we are quickly getting into routine and will soon be reaping the benefits of the bigger space.”

Hall, renowned for its grand evening dining experience, has concocted a delightful lunch time menu – which you can take in the majestic dining hall under huge gilded framed portraits and magnificent draped windows or al fresco – out on the beautiful terrace. The menu is fresh and flavourcentred. Starters included Panko crumbed crab and haddock cakes with rocket leaves and chilli and coriander dip, beautiful smoked salmon with grapefruit and fennel and caper berries, peppered lamb fillet with goat’s curd, air-dried tomato and rocket pesto. The tiger prawns with garlic roasted vegetable salad were gorgeously sumptuous, salty

and seasidey. The soup of the day, garlic and watercress, was lush and rich and served with a sun dried tomato fresh baked roll. Also on the starter line up, pressed smoked chicken with spring onions and tarragon and textures of cauliflower or quinoa with orange, pine nut, celery and piquillo peppers with garden leaves.

There’s harissa marinated plaice fillet with capers, samphire, preserved lemon, tender stem broccoli and chive couscous or grilled fillet of seabass, accompanied by gremolata, Swiss chard and a tarragon mash, and the traditional deep fried haddock with chunky chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. nder drifts of a warm summer breeze and the shade of a huge parasol, nothing could be finer for this summer lunch on the terrace than finishing the meal with a very English trifle – here an utterly delicious and light mixed berry and prosecco trifle with mascarpone and meringue

Other sweet endings include a dark chocolate brownie with mocha sauce and mint chocolate chip ice cream, or blood peach sorbet with fresh Assington Farm strawberries, or vanilla crème brule with a rhubarb crumble shot. It is an utterly delightful experience, to sit on the terrace of a grand English house, eating beautiful food on a perfect summer day. Definitely an experience to savour and enjoy. A real treat. Warm Seabass Salad with Lemon dressing SERVES 4

4 seabass fillets 2 red peppers 2 yellow peppers 6 large jacket potatoes 200g ruby chard 1 fennel bulb, finely sliced 1 carrot Lemon dressing

3 lemons 4 tbsp honey 4 tsp elderflower cordial 25g sugar

1 Put the lemon zest in a food processor with the sugar and blend for one minute. Then add the honey, the elderflower and lemon juice from 2 lemons. 2 Blend all together for a further minute. Then place into a saucepan and warm gently and stir until the sugar granules have melted. Do not let mixture boil. Leave to cool. 3 Finely cut the carrot into matchsticks and place with the fennel in a bowl of iced water and chill until ready to serve. 4 Dice the potatoes in to 2cm squares, place in boiling water for 5 to 6 minutes, remove and leave to cool. 5 Remove the skin and seeds from the peppers. To make this easier, blacken under a hot grill or turn in the flame on your stove top. Then place in a bowl, cover with cling film and leave to cool. When cooled, peel off the skin

Add the peppers and once they have heated through, remove from the heat and add the ruby chard. Season with sea salt, add a slash of the lemon dressing and fold

Then place on top off the warm salad. 9 Drain the mixed fennel and carrot and place on top of the seabass and drizzle the lemon dressing over. JASON DINVERNO

After originally training as a pastry chef and spending over a decade working as a chocolatier, chef Jason Dinverno’s style can best be described as “a quality mix between European and British with truly great desserts!” Jason has worked in some great kitchens including Felixstowe’s Café Bencotto and The Townhouse before moving to THE ARBOR HOUSE on their opening in August 2016. What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?

What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?

Honestly? Anything not prepared by me! After spending the day working hard, preparing dishes for everyone else to enjoy, it’s great to sit back and enjoy the food itself once in a while. What type of cooking do you enjoy cooking the most?

Pastry and desserts. It’s what I specialised in during my training

76

– I then worked at a chocolatiers for a long time before moving into restaurant and pub kitchens. Suffolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?

We recently used our weekly Steak Night at The Arbor House to make sure we were using locally sourced beef and I was really impressed with Riverside Beef, I think most is sold to trade, but there are a few butchers in Bury St Edmunds that stock it.

What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?

Although I pay attention to what is currently popular in terms of new ingredients, I try to focus on using the best quality ingredients I can as opposed to the most fashionable ones.

I always have salt, onions and icing sugar. Salt, because it is the most basic seasoning ingredient and draws out so much flavour, you don’t need to make things complicated if you season well. Onions, because I personally think everything is better with onions – they add extra layers of flavour to dishes. Lastly, icing sugar, because if you make a mistake you can always hide it with icing sugar!

Mandy Errington Déjà Vu Boutique, Ipswich

My East Coast Life Suffolk born, Mandy Errington has resided and worked in Suffolk all of her life. Through the encouragement of her husband and family, she took the plunge to open Déjà Vu Boutique in 2012 and has never looked back!

What makes your boutique unique? As well as stocking ‘unique’ fashion lines our ethical stance is top priority. Our pledge is to only stock Beauty brands which are chemical and cruelty-free, as standard. We've been successful stockists of Youngblood Minerals since 2012 and gained awards from them previously. The shop also runs efficiently on Eco energy and we use recycled packaging wherever possible.

How do you keep shoppers coming back for more? My inspiration is providing all things fashion that customers adore! From the outset, we wanted to stand out as a retailer by offering something different. That's why we mainly handselect our stock from exclusive City-based suppliers to sell to fashionistas craving individuality! We maintain a fresh and modern approach and continue to diversify by regularly introducing new lines and store enhancements. Déjà Vu reinvented itself in 2014 when we moved completely away from selling second hand designer

fashion, as this market was becoming far too restrictive for us.

Déjà Vu has been trading for 5 years now – what changes have you seen in trade? How people shop has changed dramatically over the years, with so many opting to shop online for convenience. In response to this, we launched our online shop this year. On the other hand, local people tend to respect local values and like to support the ‘Independents’ within their area. This has benefited us as retailers, as a high proportion of our shoppers live or work locally.

Any future plans? We’re very excited about introducing our very own Déjà Vu Style Experience Packages and a bespoke customer loyalty scheme, later this year. These are opportunities to further enhance the Boutique’s customer experience. What do you love about Ipswich? The culture and diversity! Ipswich has so much to offer for visitors and residents alike. Living close to the Ipswich Waterfront is a real bonus, as I’m able to enjoy walks and a variety of dining experiences. n Déjà Vu Boutique 10 Norwich Road, Ipswich 01473 404592 www.dejavuboutique.co.uk
