They have now been offered a temporary home in Tower House, opposite St Mary le Tower Church in the town. In January, the Tower Street Print Project launched five week courses and half-day ‘have a go’ sessions on Saturday mornings and a more advanced group for experienced printmakers. Al Smyth, artistic director, said: “We show people who have no previous experience of printmaking how to create lino-cuts and etchings in a friendly, social atmosphere, so that they can create their own wonderful art. “We also work with printmakers who want to develop their own art

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

Getting some aroma therapy

I

T’S AMAZING how a smell can evoke a long forgotten memory and can transport you back to an exotic holiday, a childhood moment or remind you of a special person. Personally I’m a fragrance addict. Aromatherapy can be traced back more than 3,500 years to when the Egyptians burned aromatic wood and spices. They believed the smoke rose to the heavens, carrying their prayers to the gods. My point exactly. The first thing I do when I get home is light a candle infused with natural oils and enjoy the delights of those gorgeous aromas as they permeate the air. My morning regime always finishes with a generous spray of Eau de toilette. I have a collection to choose from, to suit my mood or the occasion. In Fanny & Frank we recently received training from Miller Harris fragrances and were shown the real art of fragrance layering (it really is an art) and creating a truly individual smell, how fabulous is that, Cleopatra would have been a customer for sure. I love bath oils, French milled soaps and skin care ranges with natural oils more than synthetic smells. The same with shampoos

22

and body lotions, it’s the smell that is the decision maker on my product choices. I’ve just come back from one of the many trade fairs that at this time of year we retailers find ourselves at in search of exciting new products to offer you, our lovely customers. There were so many things to look at, but I found myself drawn to the home fragrance area, as soon as I was hit by that wall of delicious aroma.

I

T’S SURPRISING how fragrance is also dictated by fashion, for example, figs seem to be on trend, as is avocado. It's such a lovely product area to enjoy, with so many new artisan companies literally producing fragrance recipes in their kitchens. I feel there is a departure from

the big fragrance brands as we want to have our own identity and appreciate something less mainstream. Home fragrances are also the ideal gift, never any waste and never sent into school to be recycled for the raffle! So, with the courage of my own conviction, this year we have introduced a number of new fragrance based products such as Miller Harris fragrances and Aromatherapy Associates, a new candle and diffuser range from Illumens and there will be more I'm sure, after all, buying season has only just begun and there is so much aroma to discover! n Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden and Colchester.

Cake & Catwalk Lynn’s Spring Shake Up

Those who know me well know that I dislike it this time of the year intensely. I try to avoid making rash and ill-judged decisions as they come out of a crazy, depressed mind and a woman in need of a holiday. Let’s move on... Just before Christmas I took delivery of a new brand HABITS from South Africa with their Travel Collection. I did get all black to keep it simple and to try it out on my lovely customers. It’s gone down very well. It consists of trousers, tops, dresses and a long skirt, made from uncrushable good quality jersey. Sizes to suit most shapes. You can of course mix and match, use it for day, business and, with the opera coat, jazz it up for an evening event. I am going to look at other colour combinations and a few new styles but it’s definitely a winning capsule collection. Prices range from £35. Another new line for me is POSTCARD FROM BRIGHTON, which come in some lovely spring colours, easy to wear casual sweatshirts and joggers. And for a Mothering Sunday gift, we have a beautiful new jewellery collection from Black & Sigi. Hey Ho! Spring is New on the horizon! label LYNN TURNER

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

A short guide to engagement ring traditions and etiquette

YES YOU CAN HELP PICK OUT THE RING

Tradition dictates that the proposer shops for the ring and surprises his or her intended with the bauble as a gift, but many modern women (and men!) would prefer to have some say in the style of the ring. And in 2018, that’s totally fine; you can go shopping together, suggest designers, send inspiration, whatever you like. After all, if you’re the person wearing it, you should like it! YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A DIAMOND SOLITAIRE

The classic diamond solitaire is really the original ‘engagement ring’. The singular stone initially came about as a form of insurance to protect women in the event that a suitor decided he no longer wanted to marry her; of course, this way of thinking is largely outdated nowadays, as is the rule that a diamond solitaire is the way to go. Contemporary jewellery designers now create engagement rings with unique stones and design elements, often foregoing diamonds altogether. The most important thing is to feel comfortable with a ring that suits you. PAYING FOR THE RING

Tradition stipulates that the proposer pays for the ring. But since, ideally, you are entering into a partnership with someone who you consider

36

your equal, why not also share equal responsibility with the purchase of the ring? Of course, if you want to be gifted the ring, there’s nothing wrong with that, but if you do want to help pay, the gesture will likely be appreciated.

there’s no familial strife over who possesses the jewellery. Also be sure to make provisions for the ring to be returned to the family in the event the relationship does not work out!

HOW MANY MONTHS SALARY ON A RING?

If something sours and you decide to break off the engagement, you should at least offer to return the ring, particularly if it was gift. If you helped pick out the ring or even helped pay for it, ideally you’ll return the ring and split the financial gains.

There are old ‘salary rules’ that a man should spend two or three months of his salary for your ring. This stems from an advertising campaign run by DeBeers in the 1930s – created to drive sales of diamonds – and has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of tradition. Couples should only spend what they can afford. FAMILY HEIRLOOMS

Heirloom engagement rings are not only symbolic of the giver’s love; they are also full of tradition and family memories. Make sure other family members agree with the decision, however, so

IF YOU BREAK IT OFF, OFFER TO RETURN THE RING

RING PLACEMENT

Modern tradition dictates the engagement ring be worn on the ring finger of the left hand. After the wedding, the wedding band is traditionally worn closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on top of it.

THE GIFT LIST Whatever your celebration, setting up a gift list makes things easier for friends and family who would like to mark the occasion with a special gift. At John Lewis you can build and manage your list online or in-store. Here are some top tips for compiling your wedding list... 1. Don’t underestimate how generous friends and family can be! Guests like to have a good range of gifts to choose from. Prevoius lists have included everything from TV’s to egg cups! 2. Make a longer list than you think you’ll need. You can always flag the items you really want as priorities, which is easier than having to go back to your list to add additional items. 3. Leave yourself plenty of time

to scan your list. Picking out your chosen gifts can take a little longer than you might think, and John Lewis do have a huge range to choose from.

4. If you’re really pushed for time to visit a store or even to view the selection online, the answer is to set up a gift voucher-only list. Pick up your vouchers after your celebration, and then go shopping after your wedding, or spread it out over time. 5. Don’t select all your gifts too far in advance of the big day – 8 weeks before is about right, and your guests can then start buying 6 weeks before the wedding. 6. You can think big too. If you’d

like to place a larger gift on

your list, such as a TV, this is also possible – If you've asked for vouchers the accumulated amount can then go towards a big purchase, like carpets or a fitted kitchen. 7. Select the early delivery option for honeymoon items like beach towels, cameras or luggage, so that you’ll have them before you travel. 8. You can also request

contibutions towards a dream honeymoon with Kuoni, John Lewis Gift Vouchers, or donations to Cancer Research UK. Just ask them how. For more information on John Lewis gift lists and how to register visit www.johnlewisgiftlist.com

FESTIVAL OF FABRIC

T

HE FESTIVAL OF FABRIC was borne from an idea that had bubbled away in the back of Amanda Bowden’s mind for quite some time. Amanda trained in Fashion and Textiles and also spent many years teaching textiles in Suffolk schools before setting up her sewing school in March 2013. Husband Tim (photographer and sewing machine mechanic extraordinaire) and Amanda share a passion for sewing, vintage clothing, music, good home baking and shopping! They have managed to combine all of these passions into the Festival of Fabric. The concept is to bring together specialist retailers with a love for and expertise in fabric, haberdashery, dressmaking,

knitting and sewing patterns, vintage sewing machines, knitting and crochet accouterments all under one roof. They also wanted to provide an opportunity for visitors to participate in sewing and crafting workshops with a vintage feel by employing wonderful teachers. It all sounds dreamy doesn’t it? FESTIVAL OF FABRIC 2018

Moving to the gracious surroundings of The Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe, the Festival will have a bigger market place for traders. Not only will visitors have the opportunity to satisfy their shopping needs, there is a fantastic exhibition of vintage fashions from the 1930s to the 1950s. Lectures and workshops

are also on offer. For those wishing to get crafty there is a Vintage Millinery workshop inspired by the spirit of make do and mend. Guests can join Suffolk milliner, Scarlett Valentine, to take them through converting an existing hat into a fabulous vintage style accessory. Bobo Bun, craftisan expert, will be hosting a 1940s felt corsage workshop to brighten the dullest of outfits. A vintage fashion lecture is being given by Dr Chris Boydell, principal lecturer in Design History at De Montfort University about the wonderment which is Horrockses Fashions. There are also vintage style hair and makeup demonstrations by Hair Raid Shelter so you can finish off your whole look beautifully.

l Festival of Fabric is a one day event on Saturday 3rd March at The Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe. Adults £5, Under 16s free! For tickets and more info on workshops and lectures, visit www.festivaloffabric.co.uk

PLAYING HOST

Families in demand to host international students across the county

W

hite House Guardianships is a family-run company based in Bournemouth that for 25 years has been caring for international students aged 7-18 studying at schools across the UK. We offer a range of programmes that allow students to attend a choice of schools with tailored guardianship services to give international students a chance to experience life and education in the UK. Last year, WHG was guardian to students from 44 different countries who stayed for varying lengths of time, from one week to full academic years.

Together with their partners abroad, WHG prepare students for their stay in the UK thus ensuring a happy experience and a long-lasting friendship between families and students. The WHG local guardians are the student’s guardian while they are in the UK, they are responsible for their welfare and safety. They recruit host families in their area and give support where needed. They organise the placement of students into host families and are the main contact for the local schools, students and host families. As part of the process, host families are required to

complete an online application with information about their family, home and pets and photographs. This forms an electronic host family profile that can be sent to students and their parents to see before a student stays with the family. l White House Guardianships would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to know more about becoming a WHG host family and welcoming students in to your home. Please call their head office on 08458 686 688 or visit our website whg.eu.com

A ROUNDED EXPERIENCE

Host families form a large part of the guardianship service that are offered to students. A spokesperson said: ‘A big part of a student’s experience is living with a British host family. We are constantly recruiting families who would like to host our international students to offer them a home away from home.” All host families are given a handbook for guidance and rates of pay in advance. The majority of the students across Suffolk are in boarding schools and require host families for exeat week ends and half terms in October, February and May.

HAYLEY’S TOP TIPS FOR

Tying the knot... Abroad BY HAYLEY FROGLEY YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT TRAVEL CONSULTANT

O

ne of the many positives of ‘tying the knot’ abroad is it costs less than half compared to a traditional ‘at home’ celebration. However, decision making such as, where do we choose to go, what can we afford, when is best to travel and what will suit our style and interests, can be overwhelming especially as this is one of the most important days of your life. This is where I can help. I work closely with many wellknown tour operators, such as Kuoni, Beachcomber, Sandals, to name a few, and their wedding specialists. Together, we plan and customise to create a special day that will be a perfect day. This not only makes the happy couple’s planning completely stress free, as they will be in good hands under the guidance of the wedding specialists, but also gives them peace of mind knowing they have the full

protection from ATOL and ABTA, ensuring they will return home with the happiest of memories treasured forever. The suppliers I use are extremely experienced, have an amazing attention to detail and provide a dedicated wedding planner at the resort who offer impeccable personal service in a world class location at really affordable prices. The wedding specialist will contact you, once the booking is made, to discuss all the fine details – the service they provide as well as flowers, make up, hair, legal documents and your most desired location at the resort where you wish to say your vows to one another. I can also offer a Gift List to the guests attending the wedding. This is a great way for the wedding party to contribute towards that perfect honeymoon, luxurious massages or

Champagne and a romantic meal on the beach maybe, making their gifts very personal to the happy couple. All this planning is completely taken care of and is a free to use service for my clients. For those looking at getting married in the not too distant future it’s never too early to book that perfect destination. ■ Please feel free to get in touch so I can help you plan for the most memorable experience.

My service is free, I am always available whenever you need me and wherever you are. No call centres and no queueing! Contactable 7 days a week for any queries or bookings.

“As next of kin I wouldn’t automatically be entitled to make decisions on behalf of Mum in relation to her care if she should become unable to.”

Safeguarding the future welfare of a loved one MY PROBLEM: As an only child, I’d always been close to my Mum. When Dad died a few years ago, Mum panicked about managing the household finances as Dad had always been in charge. As a result, she took steps to ensure that she was financially secure by granting me authority to handle financial issues on her behalf under a Lasting Power of Attorney. This had all worked out okay until recently, when my Mum was diagnosed with dementia. Clearly, it was devastating for both of us and I started to worry about what would happen if Mum’s mental state declined and she needed to go into care. JOHN, FELIXSTOWE

42

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

As a family, we have always relied on Barker Gotelee to handle our legal affairs – they helped Mum and Dad make their Wills and, of course, after Dad died, Ann-Marie Matthews in the Private Client Team prepared the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) so that I could take care of Mum’s finances on her behalf. I know this decision brought Mum great relief and comfort. At that time, Ann-Marie suggested that it would also be wise to formally appoint someone as Mum’s Attorney for health and welfare matters too. I hadn’t appreciated this, but as her Vanilla February/March 2018

REAL LIVES next of kin I wouldn’t automatically be entitled to make decisions on behalf of Mum in relation to her care if she should become unable to. Whilst both Mum and I acknowledged that this would be important at some point, it just didn’t seem so at that time.

I

N THE MONTHS following Mum’s diagnosis, however, her condition became more obvious and I became increasingly concerned about how she’d manage decisions regarding her future health. My mum has always held strong views and I wanted to be sure that they would continue to be respected. Once again, I turned to Barker Gotelee for advice where Ann-Marie greeted me like an old friend. She explained how a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) would work. If Mum appointed me as her attorney, it would allow me to make necessary future decisions regarding her health and welfare on her behalf if she was unable to make them herself. This could cover a raft of things: for example, future medication, the type of care she receives – even whether to refuse life-sustaining treatment. Ann-Marie explained that, should Mum lose mental capacity without the LPA in place then third parties, such as our local authority or the NHS, could take responsibility for such major decisions. If I wanted to contest their decision, I would need to apply to the Court of Protection which Ann-Marie warned was a far more complex and costly process – clearly, this is not what either of us wanted. The only stipulation was that Mum had to be of sound mind

at the time she made the LPA, which Ann-Marie was qualified to judge.

I

FELT NERVOUS putting the idea of the Health and Welfare LPA to Mum. With her condition, Mum easily became distressed at the idea of entering new environments, so when Ann-Marie said she would be more than happy to visit mum at home, that was a real blessing. She recognised that Mum had good and bad days and offered us flexibility around appointments, which was a big help. Over a couple of home visits, we discussed how best to set up the LPA. We covered everything

that’s important to Mum, even down to the fact that she wishes to receive a vegetarian diet should she enter full-time care. Ann-Marie also provided some useful booklets explaining my responsibilities and said I could call anytime if I had any queries. That was such a relief. Once the document was complete, Ann-Marie submitted the application to the Court and around two months later, we received copies to keep. For now, the original is filed away while we get on with enjoying our lives, but it’s a massive comfort to know, that if and when the time comes, I have the power to ensure that Mum is cared for in line with her wishes. ■

The Aqua Cushion massage is ideal for pregnant women

illa Van IED &

TR TED TES

AQUA CUSHION MASSAGE

T

HERE’S LITTLE dispute that a good full body massage can relax one’s muscles, ease stresses and strains and sooth the mind and soul. So here at Vanilla we don’t need much persuading to try out a new massage.

WHAT IS AN AQUA CUSHION MASSAGE? Aqua Cushion massage is a new technique, available at Image Salon, which involves warm waterfilled pads on top of a therapy couch. Your entire massage is carried out while you are face-up, on your back. The therapist then slides their hands between you and the pads, using oils, to massage the back of the body. This means the therapist’s pressure is upwards rather than downwards and uses your body weight to provide the pressure. The result is a deep tissue massage without the need for hard, intense pressure. WHO IS IT GOOD FOR? An Aqua Cushion massage makes a good choice for anyone who can’t lie on their front, perhaps because of mobility problems or disabilities,

46

or because of pregnancy. Indeed, this massage is good for anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable lying face-down on a massage couch and those who feel self-conscious turning over mid-treatment. Thanks to the heat from the pads (30-40°C), an Aqua Cushion massage can be beneficial if you suffer from neck pain, lowerback aches, or stiff muscles. The heat helps warm your muscles up, which makes the therapist's movements more effective.

THE EXPERIENCE At Image, I was lucky enough to have Viki as my masseuse. She has spent years perfecting her massaging skills on cruise ships and just loves to massage. Viki checked with me first what pressure I would be happy with, and later on checked if I wanted more or less pressure. The placement of the warmwater pads are designed to give your back perfect spinal alignment. It took a little shifting around to get the right position – my knees were slightly raised and my hands rested below the pads to encourage my

body to relax. Aqua Cushion massage is very different to the usual kind of massage that you experience on a couch. So expect the unexpected! Initially it can feel a little disconcerting as the water in the pads makes sloshing sounds, and your body shifts, as the movements of the therapist move your body against the pads. If you’ve ever sat on a water bed, these cushion pads feel a little like that – just relax and don’t fight the sensation. Oh, and don’t worry – you won’t get wet! The water in the pads is thoroughly sealed in. After a short while my body was completely relaxed, and enveloped in warmth, while Viki treated my legs, arms, back and shoulder to a deep tissue massage – no painful pummelling for me, but my muscles felt invigorated and did for days to come. I can highly recommend! AQUA CUSHION MASSAGE £35 for 32 mins / £49 for 55 mins at Image Salon. To book call 01473 222188 or visit www.imagesalon.co.uk

THE PINK SHED

Vanilla meets the brains behind a local beauty business

T

HE BEAUTY industry is booming and shows no signs of waning, but restassured, it takes a bit more than a pretty face to be successful in this business. That’s what Natalie Wood realised early on in her career, so she worked hard to get a business degree under her belt before launching into the beauty business and eventually opening her own salon, The Pink Shed. Natalie had always wanted to be ‘in beauty’ but good old mum and dad insisted that she worked at some “serious” qualifications instead. But she’s used them to full advantage and The Pink Shed beauty salon, at Brantham, is now in its third year and thriving. But there are no shortcuts with beauty training and Natalie has spent the intervening years, training and researching the latest treatments and brands

48

so she is confident that she is offering only the best to her growing list of loyal clients. “Elemis was top of my list to use for skincare, facials and massage”, explains Natalie. The British-based anti-aging skin

“Having the treatment rooms sound-proofed and air-conditioned was one of my ‘musts’” care brand has been providing top of the line skin care products to the masses for over 25 years. Combining natural ingredients that have proven scientific results, with enticing aromatics, Elemis produces the numberone-recommended anti-aging skin care line.

“For waxing, we use the renowned Lycon wax system which picks up very, very short hairs, leaves the skin very smooth and is almost pain-free. I’ve not found a better wax to use. Sienna X spray tanning, OPI nail polish, Gelish gels and LVL lash extensions complete the our list of top beauty brands available here.”

LONG WITH the great treatments and products, the lovely location of The Pink Shed appears to be one of its main attractions. Clients come from Ipswich, Manningtree, East Bergholt and beyond for their regular beauty treatments in this beautiful rural setting. Parking is not a problem and as an added extra you get an amazing view of the Stour estuary as well. The name of the salon was chosen, in part, to reflect the Vanilla February/March 2018

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

I HAVE STARTED TO SUFFER WITH ROSACEA, WHAT COULD HAVE STARTED CAUSING THIS AND HOW CAN I HELP TREAT IT?

There is not a definitive cause for Rosacea, it is unpredictable and the average age of onset is post30. However, there are common triggers that we can avoid and it has been advised that gentle and protective skincare is very helpful for those who suffer. Common triggers include spicy food, alcohol, changes in temperature, cosmetics, hot beverages and fragrances. If you start to acknowledge some of the triggers, learn to cope as positively as possible with the condition and look after your skin and health, then you should start to see an improvement. TOP TIP: Do not use harsh exfoliating products they will irate and make the condition worse. MY NATURAL LASHES HAVE STARTED FALLING OUT, SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

The time of year affects our lash cycle and how frequently they shed. We grow extra hair during the summer to protect us from the sun, but as we come into autumn, the temperature drops and the blood that is

50

pumped into our cells for hair growth is redirected to our major organs. But if you feel your lashes are dropping out more than usual there might be another reason. Chemical compounds in mascaras can cause lashes to fall out. There are also certain chemicals in mascaras that cause allergies. If you are an individual who has allergies to air born materials, such as dust, then it is better for you to avoid wearing a mascara. Strong medication can also make eyelashes fall out, the most obvious being chemotherapy, which has a direct effect on the hair follicles. TOP TIP: Use a nourishing lash conditioner to help them grow back. I SUFFER WITH INGROWN HAIRS AFTER WAXING, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE?

Ingrown hairs – the bane of some peoples lives! Firstly, do not pick an ingrown hair as this can lead to scarring. Instead, treat the area with a product containing salicylic acid – this helps free it by gently exfoliating the area, as well as tackling inflammation and fighting infection. Ensure you exfoliate the area two to three times a week, this removes any dead skin cells and will ensure the hair follicle isn’t blocked. Lastly – keep your skin hydrated! A simple daily moisturiser will do the trick. TOP TIP: If shaving is giving you ingrown hair switch to waxing or better still laser hair removal. n

Anita is also the only Level 4 qualified microblader and semi-permanent make-up specialist in the area and, when she qualified, she was head hunted by her tutor to work part-time in several prestigious beauty salons in London. A real feather in her cap. “At Escape we are dedicated

colour, and density; it’s art and technology working together.” Anita’s specialist skill in semipermanent make-up offers a fresh, natural result for women who want to look their best all the time, without needing to apply make-up every day. Anita says: “This is great for busy women who want to be ready to go at a moment’s notice, but don’t want to look over made up. Semi-permanent eyeliner, lip liner or full colour lips can achieve that beautifully and naturally. Anita has some ambitious plans for her salon. “I’m hoping to start accredited Levels 2-4 beauty teaching courses here. It’s so important to foster new talent, and specialist techniques like microblading and semi-permanent make-up must only be done by fully qualified therapists. It really is vital that people check the qualifications of a salon before they undergo any treatment like this. “Over the next few months I will also be introducing even more advanced treatments, including microdermabrasion, hi-frequency non-invasive face lifts and IPL laser hair removal.” Escaping to Escape Beauty Rooms sounds like a trip worth making! n

Here’s the Va da e th on s up and beauty hicc

6 MONTHS BEFORE Up your skincare game

Eat well and incorporate a simple bedtime regime of cleansing, toning and moisturising to keep skin in top form and reduce the risk of breakouts. Start exercising

Exercising is not just important for getting in shape but also for reducing stress. Try yoga to increase posture strength and relieve tension. 4 MONTHS BEFORE Looking after your locks

If you want to experiment with hair colour or style, now’s the time to do it. It will give a new colour time to grow out and you the chance to get used to your new look. 3 MONTHS BEFORE Book consultations

If you’re getting your make-up professionally done, test the water by consulting with a few different make-up artists. Once you’ve found ‘the one’, book early to avoid missing out. Do the same with your hairdresser. If you’re sticking with your regular stylist, get your

54

pre-wedding trial run booked in and any other appointments you need ahead of the big day. Fake tan experiment

You don’t want to have a streaky fiasco on the big day so leave yourself plenty of time to get your bridal golden glow. Think about the neckline of your dress and any existing tan lines you’ll need to even out. Teeth whitening

Get into a home teethwhitening routine to get perfect pearly whites. Don’t leave this to the last minute, it’s best to build it up and factor in sensitivity to achieve a winning big day smile. 1 MONTH BEFORE Trial run

Now is the time to buy the products you’d like and trial them out. Ask for samples from beauty counters to give them a test run before you buy. Hair practice

Having a hair practice before the big day is a must. Head to the salon armed with your headdress so your stylist can make recommendations on the best look.

Get eyebrows shaped

Leave plenty of time for getting eyebrows shaped professionally. This will leave enough time to grow them out in places if needed. Treat your face

Time to start making your skin glow. Book in for a facial or start using facemasks at home. Don’t be tempted to do it right before the wedding in case you have a reaction. Cut down on tea and coffee

A strict detox isn’t necessary but cutting down on tea and coffee will reduce staining your teeth and flush your body of caffeine. Probably a good idea to think about alcohol too. 2 WEEKS BEFORE Exfoliate and moisturise

1 WEEK BEFORE Bikini wax and shave legs

Make sure everything is silky smooth for your bikini on the honeymoon. Splurge on a massage

There’s a lot of pressure the week leading up to the wedding so treat yourself to a relaxing massage with your maid of honour. ONE DAY BEFORE Pack an emergency make-up kit

Get all your essential make-up for touch ups packed and give it to a trusty bridesmaid. Get mani-pedi done

You’ll be too excited to sit patiently and wait for your nails to dry on the big day so make this one of the last things you do the night before. Have a soak

To get those silky soft elbows, hands and feet, start an exfoliating and moisturising treatment once or twice a week. Drink water

Staying hydrated is the cheapest and easiest beauty trick in the book. Aim to drink one and half litres of water a day for clear glowing skin.

Time to switch off and unwind in the tub. Let those pre-wedding stresses melt away. Try adding some essential oils for luxuriously soft skin the next day. 8-10 hours sleep

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing so get a good night’s rest for the big day.

T THE BIG FAT FREEZE!

TR ED TEST

We test 3D-Cryo Freeze – the latest treatment to reduce fat and cellulite at the Juliette John Aesthetics Laser Skin Wellness Clinic

M

Y STOMACH area has always been a problem despite exercising on a regular basis. Three C-Sections and an incisional hernia later my stomach muscles are shot to bits! Also like the rest of the population I induged too much over the festive period. Something has to be done, I need a kick start for 2018. Imagine how thrilled I was to receive a call from the Juliette John Aesthetics Laser Skin Wellness Clinic, inviting me along

56

to their new, swanky medical spa in Ipswich for a 3D-CryoFreeze. I arrived at the clinic and was warmly welcomed by Juliette. I knew I was in safe hands as Juliette has many years experience in this area. She took a look at my stomach area and suggested we do two areas, the front of my stomach and the sides to give the best result. The therapist can provide a tailored treatment plan to provide you with the best possible results. TECH EXPLAINED

3D-CryoFreeze is a unique

non-invasive treatment using a combination of electro and cryo therapy. Using the 3D-CryoFreeze handpiece, this creates vacuum which draws the fat into the handpiece. This did look very strange but satisfying! This localised area within the handpiece is then frozen, causing 20%-40% of the fat cells in that area to die.

3

D-CryoFreeze targets specifically the fat cells. By lowering the temperature to -6 degrees it pinpoints the content of the fat cells, causing them to crystalize. No other structures

Vanilla February/March 2018

BEAUTY

are affected by this process. The remaining content of the fat cells is then disposed of naturally through the body’s lymphatic system. Only one treatment is required per area. As the body takes several months to flush out the distroyed fat cells, the best results are to be seen after 6-12 weeks.

BEFORE

AFTER

THE PROCESS

The experience was not painful and lasted approximately 40-60 minutes per area. Juliette placed a glycerine pad on the area to be treated, to protect the skin. During the treatment the fat is drawn into a suction cup before freezing. I did feel a slight pulling sensation and the area was very cold. Within a few minutes the area went numb but also felt fine. There is no down time and recovery is immediate. The numbness can last for up to 10 days. Some people may experience possible bruising, redness, but I didn’t. I noticed an immediate improvement. My stomach looked flatter, smoother and more toned. So looking forward to seeing a further improvement in a few weeks! This treatment is designed to target stubborn areas that just won’t shift. Typical areas are inner thighs, lower abdomen and ‘muffin tops’ but the clinic is also treating those hard to get to areas such as double chins and the dreaded 'bingo wings'. Although 3D-CryoFreeze is a one off treatment, it can be devised as part of a course of treatments depending on your

February/March 2018 Vanilla

These pictures demonstrate how overall results can be, but this will vary for each individual. It is important you discuss with your clinician what is achievable.

goals. For example if you have a pocket of stubborn fat but also loose skin on that area, it would be advised to combine 3D-CryoFreeze with a course of radio frequency to both remove the fat and tighten and tone the skin. MICHELLE NICOLL

3D-CryoFreeze 3D CryoFreeze treatments start at £250, 3D Lipo from £75. For bookings or for more information on the treatment please contact the clinic on 01473 222145 or email info@juliette-john.com

FITNESS

HOW TO STICK TO YOUR FITNESS GOALS Having trouble with your new fitness regime? Here’s three no-nonsense tips to keep you on track

2 Vanilla

TOP TIPS

1

IS YOUR EXCUSE BIGGER THAN YOUR WHY?

70% of people quit within the first 60 days of starting their fitness journey, simply because the excuses not to do it shout louder than the reasons to carry on. Think about your main goal and ask yourself: why did I start this? Take the time to find out why and focus on it. Make it the driving force that gets you up in the mornings and keeps you going on those days when you want to give up!

58

ARE YOU MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF?

Work, busy lives and family commitments often mean it can be hard to balance duties with making time for ourselves. Your fitness goal is all about you: figure out a time of the day you can commit to, and spend one hour three times a week putting yourself first. Consider this time as important as a meeting with your boss or a doctor's appointment.

3

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO STAY MOTIVATED?

Keeping motivated is the hardest part when trying to stick to your fitness goals. Working out with a friend on a similar journey can be a great way to keep each other going, but it has been proven that people who participate in group exercise have a higher success rate than those going through it on their own. Exercising in a group environment will help keep you motivated for longer, and you'll be surrounded by like-minded people who all have similar goals. A fitter you for 2018? Bring it on!

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective

I

T’S THE TIME OF YEAR when we start to awake from a deep feeling of hibernation – the days of darkness are shortening and we feel ready to come alive. Spring is the time for love... with Valentine’s Day and so many weddings planned.

So what do we need to do to stay in love?

I believe that love starts with an acceptance that we, as a person, are actually ok. We like ourselves and are aware of what our strong points are. At this stage we do not need approval from others to feel good or have our worth defined by anyone other than us. This stage is important, as we are probably going to be looking for someone to match us on a subconscious level. So if you’re single right now, start with this. Right, so let’s imagine you feel good and you have met somebody that also feels good about themselves... What next? We need to feel secure. If there are trust issues, this relationship may be doomed – how can there be any growth here with doubts on our minds? We then need surprises and fun. If we slip into the mundane and being taken or taking for granted, the relationship will stagnate. Next is the need to feel special and important to someone else-that’s why we fell in love in the first place, right? Then there’s connection, affection, friendship, sex, humour... When we have these needs met it will enable a happy, healthy and lasting relationship that, like nature in the spring time, comes alive and flourishes.

2018 HOME TRENDS

SPRING VIOLETS

If there’s one thing we can already predict about 2018, it’s that it’s the year of bold colour – at least according to Pantone. The world-renowned hue authority recently declared Ultra Violet as the colour of the year for 2018. This bold, blue-tinged purple hue is probably flooding the creative conversations in fashion houses and paint companies at this very moment. But we’re all for colourful interiors, so here are a few ways to work Ultra Violet into your decor without it looking like a panto set.

EMBRACE A MOODY THEME

If you prefer a strong look then dark and romantic purple begs for a full-on embrace. Team it with supersaturated jewel colours and rich fabrics. Think leather, velvet, and dark woods. Deep colours are still on-trend – cobalt blue, emerald green and garnet red will all work alongside violet and create a gorgeous vibrant, luscious look. Don’t forget to add some contrast shine with reflective textures, such as glowing bronze metallics, warm copper and gold.

BOLD CARPET COLOURS There are several things

to consider before buying a bold coloured carpet for your home. The light and space of each room – if it is a small room or does not have any natural light a lighter shade would make it appear lighter and larger; on the other hand a darker shade will give a larger room warmth and cosiness. If you opt for a bold coloured carpet be sure to mix it with neutral or white walls to give it that contemporary look. It is really important to make sure the colour carpet you chose is functional, for example a plain light coloured carpet would not be ideal for high traffic area's whereas a warm plum coloured carpet can be more forgiving. Carpet that’s kind to the environment

W

e understand that buying a carpet is one of the largest purchases for your home, no matter your budget. So we suggest that you bear in mind a few tips, so you are fully armed and ready to get the best from your floors, as well being able to keep up with 2018 style trends.

ASK FOR ADVICE! It is your home and you use it differently to anyone else’s home. What works for one may not be suitable for another, so even though you may love a range, it may be impractical for you! UNDERLAY One of the biggest talking points for 2018 is not about carpet but what goes underneath! Underlay is so important. It helps keep your carpet looking fantastic for much longer. The trend this year is for super environmentally-friendly underlay. Pictured right is a dual layered underlay made from recycled car tyres and reclaimed polyester – great for the environment and provides extra insulation in the home. Recycled/reclaimed underlay WOOL Another good environmentallyfriendly covering is wool carpet. Yes wool! As sheep thoughtfully grow a new fleece every year, we are able to farm the very best of carpet fibres. With a huge selection of designs, textures and colours there will be one just right for you. One of our favourites is the Lakeland Herdwick range which is made in the Lake District and uses fleece from Herdwick sheep in almost its purest form.

uilding your own home is one of the most exciting things you will ever do and we all dream of creating our ideal living space. But if you go down this route there are some vital processes that you must consider to get the results you want and avoid any frustrations that will cost you precious time and money. FINDING A PLOT Where you build your home is the probably the most important question to consider before you do

68

SELF BUILD IS JUST A DREAM AWAY! anything else. It’s all about location. But once you know where you want to be, how do you go about acquiring the land to build? You have three choices here: l Land with outline or detailed planning permission l Buy a poor quality property on a good plot and demolish l Garden plot, existing property with large garden FUNDING Finding the money to build your dream home can be a worry, but there are some options: l Sell your existing property and rent whilst building new l Self-build mortgage which works on stage payments BUDGET The cost to build a new individually designed house ranges from £1,500 to £2,500 per square metre, depending on specification,

and this doesn’t include professional fees. An average 4 bed detached house is approximately 170m2 (£255,00 to £425,00). l Decide on your total budget and stick to it. l Consider final costs compared with property value? DESIGN Put together your own wish list, consider your lifestyle and maximise the available space. How about open plan living?

Future proof the ground floor by considering a downstairs bedroom with shower room and walk-in shower. Choose classic bathroom and kitchen styles that will stand the test of time. Think about a teenager’s TV room, or home office. Before choosing an architect take time to look at previous projects, speak to their clients; did their design fit your budget?

BUILD ROUTE Really do your homework here, builders are not all the same and skill and pricing vary hugely. Shop around, take your time and don’t make snap decisions. You could consider: l Fixed price main contractor l Employ a Project Manager l Project Manage Yourself (we would only recommend this route if you have building trade experience and have several hours per week spare time) CONSTRUCTION METHODS There are few choices here: l Traditional masonry construction, which is still the most common method of construction in the UK l Timber frame which is insulated on site l SIPs Timber frame (Structurally Insulated Panel System) the panels are fully insulated off site. ESSENTIAL CONSENTS & WARRANTIES It’s easy to get tripped up here, and there are no short cuts. So make sure you get all the permission and approval of any planning you need: l Detailed planning permission and planning conditions l Building regulation approval including SAP's assessment and air test etc. l Warranty and insurance DOS & DON’TS There are so many of these, and you will learn fast along the way. If you know anyone who has undertaken a self build, talk to them about their experience and learn from their mistakes and triumphs:

Cash strapped Brits could be sitting on a goldmine in the shape of their humble garden sheds, according to new research. A study has found home owners could rake in a small fortune by turning their garden sheds into a micro business. Here’s some tips to get the most out of your shed...

Urban or rural? For your ultimate garden work space check out the range at East Anglia’s Smart Garden Offices smartgardenoffices.co.uk

1. BUSINESS OFFICE

4. CRAFT STUDIO

If you’re a sole trader or small business, there’s really no need to rent out an office; your garden shed will work fine, and indeed does for many people.

Anyone who lives with a knitter, seamstress, jewellery maker or other crafter will tell you that their materials soon start taking over the house. The shed is the perfect place both to keep your craft materials and tools, and to use them.

2. AS A WAREHOUSE

Whether you’re an eBay reseller or wholesale purchaser, you’ll need somewhere safe to store your goods and keep them separate from your household belongings. Lots of entrepreneurs use their sheds for this purpose. 3. ARTISTIC RETREAT

Writers and artists need spaces to create. The shed is quiet, free of household distractions and you’re more likely to find your muse in the view of the garden than the road. It also saves the house from paint fumes.

70

5. RENT IT

Garden goods businesses are often looking for attractive places to take promotional shots. If your shed is already a work of art, join a website so photographers can find it.

clear for one of the other options in this list. 7. KEEP CHICKENS

Purpose-built hen houses are expensive, but many people convert their sheds into coops. Look online for some comprehensive guides; you’ll need to create features such as a run, air vents and nest boxes. Remember to make the necessary checks with your council and house deeds to make sure you can keep chickens!

6. CLEAR IT OUT

If your shed is too cluttered to be of any money-making use, clear it out. You might be surprised at what you find in there in sellable condition. Then the space is Vanilla February/March 2018

The Forge Kitchen in Duke Street, Ipswich. The new all day dining smokehouse and bar, that opened in time for Christmas, is the talk of the town already, with some great reviews on Tripadvisor. Their concept is simple – “food cooked as nature intended, no fuss, over smoke and fire with just a pinch of salt and pepper”. Coupled with cocktails, craft beers & great wines, The Forge Kitchen looks set to be a success. The business represents the first independent venture for husband and wife team Grant and Robyn Owen, who have moved to Ipswich from the Oxford area. The building, in Duke Street, first became a restaurant when the long-established Mortimers fish restaurant moved there from the Waterfront. The Loch Fyne chain bought it in 2005, until selling up last year. The Forge Kitchen, 1-3 Duke St, Ipswich IP3 0AE. 01473 232009 www.theforgekitchen.co.uk

YES CHEF!

These cupcakes by Chef Jaime Garbutt take all our favourite flavours of that special luxury and hand it to you in one delicious, over-the-top bite.

Breakfast in Bed Cupcakes MAKES 12 CUPCAKES

120g unsalted butter 250g caster sugar 60g light brown sugar 3 eggs 100g buttermilk 70g melted coconut oil 1 tbsp vanilla extract 200g plain flour 40g cornstarch ¾ tsp salt 1½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp nutmeg

74

1 Preheat the oven to 170°C. Carefully butter and flour a muffin tin and set aside. 2 In the bowl of an electric mixer with paddle attachment, beat butter and both sugars together until creamy. 3 Add eggs to the sugar mixture and beat until light and fluffy, for about 3 minutes. 4 Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted coconut oil and vanilla. 5 With the mixer on a low speed, slowly pour buttermilk mix into the sugar mix to incorporate. Turn the speed up to medium-

high for about 5-7 minutes until your batter completely emulsifies. Initially, it may look like the batter has split or is lumpy, don’t panic and keep the mixer going! 6 Once you have a smooth, light batter, add the flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder and nutmeg into the bowl of the mixer. 7 On a low speed, mix the dry ingredients into the batter until just combined, being very careful not to over mix. 8 Fill the prepared tin half way full and bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted to the center of the cake comes out clean. 9 Allow to cool for 10 minutes and then turn out onto a cooling rack. Using a pastry brush, immediately drench with maple infused buttermilk. 10 Allow to cool completely before decorating. To Decorate: On each cooled cake, pipe maple icing in small rounds to build a beehive shape base. Sprinkle candied bacon pieces atop of the icing, paying particular attention to the sides. Place 2-3 mini pancakes on the top of the icing, gently pressing to create a solid foundation. Add two small pats of butter and just before serving, if you feel particularly fancy, drizzle with a little maple syrup so it drips down the edges of the pancakes. • Recipes for pancakes, maple icing and candied bacon can be found on the ‘Crumbs’ blog at www.figbarnorwich.com/news Vanilla February/March 2018

HOW TO GARNISH YOUR G&T

There’s no sign of the gin comeback letting up anytime soon. Whether you see it as mother’s ruin or it’s your go-to tipple, it’s best to drink your gin & tonic right. Floral Gins

Citrus Gins

Spiced Gins

Sloe Gins

Garnish with lavender or elderflower

Garnish with pink grapefruit & rosemary

Garnish with a slice of lemon

Lavender and Elderflower are great garnishes to floral gins as they add a wonderful perfume and are a pretty addition to the glass. The floral notes of chamomile and rose petals in gins such as Bloom and Eden Mill Love Gin are complemented by the flower garnish.

The lemon and herbaceous flavours of citrus gins like Bombay Sapphire and Monkey 47 pair perfectly with pink grapefruit and rosemary. The garnish adds a fresh vibrancy and accentuates the flavour of the gin.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick, peppercorns or chilli

February/March 2018 Vanilla

The flavour of spiced gins such as Ophir and Pink Pepper Gin is emphasised by aromatic garnishes like a cinnamon stick, peppercorns and chilli. The additional spices emphasise the existing flavour of the botanicals.

Sloe gins, such as Sipsmith and Boodles, are renowned for their sweet complexity and fruity notes. Serve simply with a slice of lemon, which will bring out the distinctive berry flavour further and add an additional zing.

A brand-new revival of the bitter-sweet comedy,

A Story About Me and Nina Simone New musical, Teddy

Quartet is the charming tale of four ageing opera singers. Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred reside in a magnificent retirement home, where the rumour circling is that the home will soon play host to a new resident, and word is it’s a star. When Jean arrives old rivalries resurface, secrets are revealed and chaos unfolds. A celebration of the twilight years of growing old disgracefully! Starring Paul Nicholas (Just Good Friends, EastEnders) Wendi Peters (Coronation Street, Oh What A Lovely War), Sue Holderness (Only Fools and Horses, The Green Green Grass) and Jeff Rawle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Drop the Dead Donkey).

7-17 MARCH

19-24 MARCH

A chilling and spinetinglingly gripping thriller by Patrick Hamilton. Two well-bred young men murder a fellow Oxford student just for the fun of it. Placing the corpse in a wooden box, they invite a group of friends over to their Mayfair apartment – including the loving mother of the boy they’ve just killed. Supper is served on the chest holding the gruesome contents. But one of their guests is starting to become suspicious… Based on a 1920’s real life case, this dark classic, was filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1948 and remains to this day one of the most tightly coiled of thrillers.

An award-winning, punchy new musical that races through the dark and damaged world of post-war London: a brand new Britain bombed to bits by the Blitz, belts tight with austerity, but ripe and ready for revolution. With electrifying original songs plus some of the hugest hits from the 1950s performed by the on-stage live band Johnny Valentine and the Broken Hearts, Teddy is the ultimate story of teenage rebellion and the birth of a new musical era, told in the immersive setting of a rock ‘n’ roll club.

Benjamin Grant Marketing Manager, The Donalds Group

My East Coast Life Benjamin Grant is the Group Marketing Manager for Ipswich car dealership, The Donalds Group, covering seven franchises across East Anglia including Mazda, Volvo and Kia. Benjamin lives in Alderton on the Suffolk coast with his fiancée Sophie and their daughter, Beatrix.

How long have you been in the car industry? I’m in my fifth year with Donalds and twelfth year in the motor industry – which in comparison to some of my colleagues across the group, makes me a relative newbie. The way in which customers research, enquire and communicate with car dealers has changed so much in this time and will undoubtedly change further in the coming years. But it certainly keeps my role from a marketing perspective, fresh and exciting. Have you always lived in Suffolk? Born and bred like a good Suffolk Punch! I had a brief absence of a couple of years when I was ‘marooned’ on a remote Fijian island working with a charity, followed by a stint living in France but this time away only strengthened my love for Suffolk. I feel a deep affinity with the county – whether running through Rendlesham

Forest or walking along shingle street coastline. We know you know how to market cars, but do you know how they work? Thankfully I leave the fiddly technical understanding to our terrific technicians. Cars have evolved so much in the past decade that now they’ve become a mobile super-computer that constantly looks out for driver/ passenger safety, advises on fuel efficient driving, keeps us connected and vocally directs us on our journeys through GPS. The autonomous car is much closer than people realise and

once the technology is mastered, will revolutionise our roads. If you could have any car, what would it be? People are often making Viking references to my big red beard so the Scandinavian Volvo XC60 would be a good fit for a Nordic man of the sea, not to mention it has ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights. They say the car industry is a good barometer for the local economy… how are things looking at the moment? We’re beginning the build of two new state-of-art showrooms for Volvo and Mazda at Futura Park in Ipswich, which is fast becoming the new hub of car dealerships in Ipswich. I think this investment by us and other companies’ is testimony to the positivity and optimism of the local economy. Give us some good news for 2018… I became a father this winter for the first time. Aside from the sheer magic of observing a newborn becoming attuned to the world, it’s also a great excuse for the father to rediscover his whimsical outlook on life. For example, I’m now certain we have faeries living at the bottom of the garden… something only parenthood can awaken! ■
