SAY HELLO TO...

FACE OF SUFFOLK 2015 UPDATE Our gorgeous winner, Belle Rogers, has been super busy since signing with JMM in July. She was immediately snapped up by international model agency, Wilhelmina’s in London, also with offices in NY, Miami and LA, as well as in Sydney, where she will be heading later in the year. So far she’s been commuting to the capital every week and worked

with a multitude of prestigious photographers and clients such as Adidas and Homepsun Cashmere. At the time of going press, September’s London Fashion Week had yet to begin but she had already been booked for two shows including Manuel Facchini. So expect to see a lot more of our fledgling home-grown super-model in 2016. Watch this space...

CAKE & CATWALK A familiar face to Vanilla readers, Lynn Turner, has opened another shop in St Peters Street. Cake & Catwalk at the Jerwood Dancehouse is still going strong and will have more gifts and other artisan products. The new shop will focus more on fashion and accessories. Well done Lynn!

GETTING BACK TO YOUR FUTURE Back to Your Future is a programme designed and run by the Eastern Enterprise Hub to help and support young mums to develop their next steps. The programme works with the mums to improve confidence and communication skills, and to give each participant the opportunity to hear from, meet, and work with, inspirational women from the local business community, creating a supportive network of mentors. The women that graduated

from the first programme (pictured above) said it had boosted their confidence, helped to inspire them and given them the time to rediscover their own ambitions. The Hub is looking to run a second cohort through this exciting programme in October and is looking for local businesses to sponsor a student. If you would like to be involved or think you could sponsor a student please contact kim.trotter@eehub.co.uk

WILDERNESS LANE – NEW ONLINE STORE Local artist Helen Taylor and writer Siobhan Horner, have come together to create stylish pieces of furniture, clothing, stationery, art and wares. Drawing on the powerful influences of Suffolk – the colours, landscape, history, people, flora and fauna – they use art and words to enliven their pieces. Most of their pieces are one-offs. They relish the process of finding the essence of each piece, its innate character, and spend time drawing it out. The reason that they produce one-offs or small runs is that they understand the value and joy of owning an individual piece and share the thrill of finding a beautiful object that fits perfectly into a home. www.wildernesslane.co.uk

HOMESPUN

The latest fashion gem to open up on Woodbridge’s Market Hill

Homespun casmere modelled by Face of Suffolk winner, Belle Rogers

AVING LEFT LONDON to settle with her husband and 3 sons in Suffolk, Sam Denny-Hodson thought she'd left the fashion world behind for a life of jeans and wellies. But living in a cold 16th century farm house soon sent Sam back to the drawing board... literally. It was time for a long held dream to become reality and so Sam designed a range of cashmere jumpers for men and women. Having worked in fashion for over 20 years, Sam knew that she only wanted the finest cashmere that would be machine washable and so began a two year journey to find the best cashmere and the best factory to knit the jumpers. This journey ended in Mongolia, where Sam now has a herd of 200 goats that live just miles away from her factory, run by a Scots man so no language problems as some of Sam’s designs are quite complex (try explaining a slouchy sweatshirt in Mongolian!). Homespun Cashmere launched in September 2014 and was

immediately taken up by 12 stockists both in the UK and US, however Homespun's biggest client is closer to home, Collen & Clare in Southwold, Aldeburgh and Burnham Market. With the cashmere flourishing, the long term plan was eventually to get a shop but Sam doesn't like to stand still too long, and when the shop she’d long admired in her home town of Woodbridge became available, Sam knew she had to seize the chance. Hence the Homespun shop opened in September at 1 Market Hill, Woodbridge.

Sam was lucky to have Gary Rowland, who works on brand design for major international fashion brands, design the shop. “The Homespun shop has

Marie cable polo £260

(other colours availbale)

given me not only a showcase for the entire Homespun Cashmere collection, but the chance to sell many of my all time favourite labels such as Margaret Howell and APC, together with wonderful local companies such as Doe leather.” There is a wide choice of mens and womenswear and, of course the entire Homespun collection together with gorgeous accessories such as stationery and jewellery sourced from around the world. www.homespuncashmere.com Vanilla October/November 2015

OODBRIDGE locals have long known that Market Hill and Church Street are two of the shopping jewels at the heart of the town's crown but did you? As Homespun, a new independent shop, opens its doors, Vanilla takes a closer look at this pretty town and its eclectic range of shops; accessibly located and a delight to stroll around, many of them tucked inside ancient 16th century buildings as gorgeous as their wares. If you adore fashion, don’t assume you need to visit a larger town as Woodbridge offers you the chance to find unique clothes and homewares, chosen for you by people as passionate about style as you are and who pride themselves upon the relationships they develop with you. Situated on Market Hill, Fanny & Frank is part of the town’s fashion fabric and a shop which can take you from ballroom to boardroom and all times in between. Stocking October/November 2015 Vanilla

men’s and women's clothing from respected fashion brands such as Scotch & Soda, Joseph and By Malene Birger plus exciting day dresses by Vivienne Westwood and separates from Annette Gortz, they pride themselves on that personal touch. Owner, Karen Wolff-Evans told us: “Fanny and Frank opened its doors 11 years ago when there was only a couple of other shops open. It was fantastic to see local women embrace us to the point we’re at today-supporting seven top-end ladies and men’s independents on one square.” If you list all the designer labels stocked on the Market Hill, you’d find yourself looking at the equivalent of somewhere like Selfridges,” Karen adds. “The reputation of this at a time when few independents still thrive, especially after such a long recession, has reached far and wide. We have shoppers from all the main local towns and villages in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk, but

15

increasingly, ladies travel from London to enjoy all that makes an independent retailer so different and special.” Anna is a regional success story with stores all over East Anglia and in London and their Church Street shop stocks an imaginative edit of the best of autumn and winter season. Style out autumn with a furry Florence Bridge scarf in rugby stripes of pink and grey and a divine Alexa Chung for AG suede coat which would look great with denim from J Brand or cuffed pants by Hod. Then wander along to Market Hill where cold winter feet can be warmly shod in the best that Italy and Spain offers at Hannah Stowe Shoes. The staff here pride themselves on an unpressurised, supportive approach and perfectly fitted footwear. Close by is Blue Bay where owner Alison Cook stocks a selection of clothing from Saint James, Armor-lux and Original Blues. Blue Bay is the place to find the French maritime influenced brand, Mat de Misaine, whose timeless and characterful clothing

is perfect for strolling along the banks of the nearby River Deben or sailing along it. That same character infuses the beautiful cashmere that brand new store, Homespun, will sell. Founder Sam Denny-Hodson has years of experience in selecting the best quality Mongolian fibres and her range will focus upon those wardrobe staples – the separates that we wear year round: simple, durable, classic, and timeless. No matter how cold it gets in Woodbridge this winter, Sam’s woollens will stand up to the job of

keeping you warm and snuggly. Finally, fashion and style comes home at Vanil on Church Street where accessories and homewares get that Scandi touch with jewellery, stationery and bags from leading Swedish brands including Rie Ellise Larsen, Pappelina and Ceannis. We particularly love the recycled porcelain jewellery from Sagen which references a charming ethos of inheritance and character and the graphic printed cushions in storm greys and apple reds from Pappelina. n REPORT: NICOLA MILLER

The Saints area of Ipswich comprises of St Peters and St Nicholas Streets, and forms a natural link from the Town Centre to the Waterfront. Steeped in history and home to our best independent businesses, shops and eateries, it’s a must-visit destination...

HOUSE IN TOWN REVAMP Closed for one week in September, the newly revamped HOUSE IN TOWN is now back open and definitely worth a visit. Owner John Manning has redecorated from top to bottom, remodelled, refloored and managed to increase the shop space by 25% – allowing even more exciting lines of eclectic homewares. With access to over 30,000 items House In Town offer far far more than you will see in the shop... but they’ve certainly given it their best shot!

WE WANT TO APPLAUD...

Forget Baker & Barista, say hello to Applaud Coffee! Due to a naming conflict with a national chain, sisters Beth and Hannah, had to face the daunting task of a rebrand. Everything you know and love has stayed the same though. Founded on community spirit and high quality local produce, Applaud Coffee seems a perfectly appropriate name! See our review on page 72

Christopher Rayner-Green (left) carefully selects and purchases ‘green’ coffee beans from across the world. These beans make their long sea voyage from places such as Brazil, India, Guatemala and Indonesia. Arriving on the shores of Suffolk they are taken to the roastery in Peasenhall for the process to begin. For his blends Christopher creates unique and exquisite flavours – the exact recipes being a closely guarded secret – the Doorsteps speciality blend is one of them, and it seems to go down very well with their customers!

ALL CHANGE! Newest arrival to The Saints is Lynn Turner who brings a second helping of Cake & Catwalk to the town. She’s taken the place of Nelson Design UK, who is now running her business from home. Lynn is really enjoying her new location: “I am having a lovely time and made to feel really welcome by all the other independents here at St Peters Street. I feel Cake & Catwalk will sit well here and offer another great reason to visit Ipswich to shop. Come and see all my fabulous things.”

Now in its 5th year the market is a well established event in the local calendar, and makes a great day out for everyone. “My mind is now hugely at rest knowing that my wishes will be known, understood and acted upon”

Reinforcing your will with a letter of wishes OUR PROBLEM: Writing a will is something I’d had on my ‘to do’ list for a few years and I’d reached a stage in my life when it really couldn’t wait any longer. As a single mum with a nine year old son to provide for, I needed to be sure that, should the need arise, my wishes for his care, and for the distribution of my estate, were well planned out and taken care of. I was all set to get the ball rolling when I read a newspaper article about a lady whose wishes – all very clearly set out in her will – were disregarded when her daughter made a claim against her mother’s estate. The article made me wonder whether it was really worth bothering with a will at all. CAROLINE, WOODBRIDGE

36

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: I’d always

known that writing a will was important, especially once my son, Jake, was born. However, with just the two of us to take care of, and always having my parents on hand to help, who also know what to do should I no longer be around, I’d been putting off setting my wishes out on paper. With Jake growing older, though, my thoughts had turned towards getting someone to formally write my will. I was all ready until I read about Mrs Jackson, who had left explicit instructions for her estate in her will which were challenged by, and then disregarded in favour of, her estranged and disinherited daughter, Vanilla October/November 2015

REAL LIVES Mrs Ilott. While I didn’t have any complications like that to deal with in my own will, it did leave me wondering if wills were really worthwhile.

I

discussed the situation with my dad and he suggested I pay a visit to his solicitors, Barker Gotelee, to have a quick chat. I called the next day and was told I could take advantage of a free consultation so that one of the solicitors could put my mind at ease and help me to decide what to do. I made an appointment with Simon Tilling in the Private Client team and went in to meet with him the following week. Simon said that he’d had conversations with quite a few people who had similar concerns after reading about the Ilott v Mitson case. He explained that, while the case did make it possible that more adult dependants may look to challenge wills under the Inheritance Act 1975, your wishes, as the person who has written the will, are still key. You do need to consider the needs of your immediate family and those who are financially dependent on you carefully, though. He said the case actually made it more important to show sound reasoning behind the decisions laid out in a will, and to thoroughly document explanations if you are excluding, from your will, someone who is close to you. Simon reinforced my views on how important it is to have a professionally prepared will, especially with dependants to provide for. We discussed the benefits of having personal wishes clearly documented and October/November 2015 Vanilla

the importance of keeping wills up to date whenever there is a change in your own circumstances – whether in respect of relationships, your financial situation and the like – or in the circumstances of those named in your will.

S

imon gave me lots to think about and, feeling confident that I needed to make a will, I asked him to draft it, taking the specific wishes that I had discussed with him into account. I thought about the draft will that Simon sent to me over the next few weeks – there was a lot to consider, particularly in respect of Jake’s future and who I could ask to be his guardians if I passed away. I also took Simon’s advice and wrote a ‘letter of wishes’, clearly documenting my reasoning

and detailing specifics, such as Jake’s education, that didn’t need to be included in the will itself but which would serve to support and reinforce my wishes. I then arranged to sign my will. Once signed, I left it, together with my letter of wishes, at Barker Gotelee’s offices to be stored, free of charge, in their secure vault, and Simon sent me copies to keep at home. I’m really glad I took the time to discuss my concerns with Barker Gotelee. It would have been very easy for me to put off writing my will, but Simon quickly put my mind at ease and showed me how simple and inexpensive it can be to create a straightforward will. My mind is now hugely at rest knowing that my wishes will be known, understood and acted upon. ■

ET ROOMS are becoming more and more in vogue, and they’re a great way to add value to your home. Whatever your style and budget, there are a huge range of options to think about. So, can anyone have a wet room? In theory, yes. A wet room is basically a shower room that does

October/November 2015 Vanilla

Installing a wet room is a job for the professionals as a gradient needs to be created along the floor to channel the shower water into a drain and then the entire room needs to be tanked (waterproofed). The most common method for creating a gradient is to install a sub-floor made from a type of plywood, which is then tiled over. Another option is to install a ready-made sloping shower former (a bit like a giant shower tray), which is also then tiled over.

IMAGE SUPPLIED BY LITTLE GREENE

BY JULIA NELSON-ELGAR INTERIOR DESIGNER AT NELSON DESIGN UK

A few of my favourite things... IT HAS TO BE SAID I love this time of year. I love the nights drawing in, the leaves changing colour, chunky jumpers, boots and homemade soup. I also love all the new collections that are making their way to my cosy cabin at the end of our garden! New books are beginning to arrive, delivered by bemused delivery drivers wondering what on earth I have ordered! POURING OVER all my design magazines a couple of obvious trends are coming through: teal and geometrics. These are a few of my favourite things so I am in design heaven! The teal is used for rich upholstery in fabulous velvets or as a wonderfully brave room colour (no shrinking violets here!). Little Greene is also introducing a new ‘Blue Colour Card’, which follows on from the Grey Colour Card they introduced a couple of years ago. I love teal. My wedding dress was teal. The Pantone mug I’m drinking my tea from is teal. Now let me get started on geometrics. Cole & Son have released a new collection called Geometrics II.

Fabulous patterns that soothe my over whelming need for order and control. I find them comforting. I love mixing geometrics with large florals or other scaled geometric patterns. I’m sure one of these new wallpapers will find a wall in my home. AS MANY OF YOU are aware, Nelson Design UK has moved! I have moved my business to a purpose built Swedish cabin at the end of my garden. Let me tell you, I love my commute! The move has allowed me and my colleague, Lisa the freedom to get out and visit more of our clients! The cabin houses all of our fabric and wallpaper books, paint charts, sample pots, rug sample books, curtains pole samples and lighting catalogues. Basically everything we had on display in our St Peters Street is tucked up in the cabin! We are very happy to see people on an appointment basis – this is proving very popular as clients then have all our attention. Of course you can phone for advice or contact us through our website with any query. We are more than happy to help.

3. Hall & stairs project In one of Suffolk’s Victorian properties the owners wanted to have a warm, welcoming, practical look for the entrance to their home. They wanted a modern twist on the traditional ‘black and white’ tiled hall. So we started with our in-home consultation service. Measuring up the floor areas and viewing the rooms so our team can see what will and won’t work in the space. To fully understand the brief we worked through each area. Warmth – wool based carpets always fit the bill. Welcoming – stripes or linear designs bring

people into the room. Practical – vinyl is ideal for homes and in fact

great for almost every room in the house. Apart from the stairs, it is also warm and easy to maintain. Modern Twist – it has to be the monotone stripe. Clean, crisp and classic shades.

Vinyl from £14.95psm

We then invited our customers to come in store and work through some design ideas and samples. This can be done in your home as well if this fits your lifestyle. With our no pressure approach this process really does allow us to find the best solution. Working together we covered all the briefs and produced a bespoke stair runner including a modern stripe design with matching black and white tile sheet vinyl for the hall. SkinBreeze

...the celebrity facial that everyone’s talking about!

SkinBreeze is the new big thing in facials. Caci, the makers of the treatment, claim that 10 weekly 60-minute sessions can make you look FIVE years younger. It specifically combats the signs of ageing – such as wrinkles, lines, dark circles, eye bags, smoker’s lip lines and sun damage.

Relax, Refresh, Revive Escape from the hustle and bustle of your daily routine and indulge in the calming surroundings of Flawless Image Beauty. 49 -53 FORE ST, IPSWICH

HOW IT WORKS:

A wand with a rotating head exfoliates the surface of the skin to remove all dead skin cells, dirt and makeup. It also vibrates to massage the skin while blue and red light therapy help plump

the surface. Red light speeds up cell renewal, and stimulates collagen growth, blue light kills acne bacteria and calms inflammation. Then a powerful device blasts oxygen and serums into the skin to reduce lines and increase firmness. An oxygen-powered spray will also spritz the face in a fine mist of serum to help soothe and plump skin. There’s plenty of celebrity endorsement too, such as Binky Felstead from Made in Chelsea (below) and Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Rihanoff!

Clinical Massage Therapy by Christine Ringrose

B

EING A GUINEA PIG for Vanilla magazine can be a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. And so, this month, I had the arduous task of experiencing an ‘ultimate’ massage session, with Christine Ringrose – clinical massage therapist. I have been fortunate enough to experience quite a few massages in my time – a previous employer allowed massage therapists to come into the workplace to try and avoid longterm sickleave associated with long hours at screens and desks.

58

And being a backache sufferer, I always head straight for the massage couch at the first niggle. But often I want something a bit more robust than a soothing aroma-laden treatment yet flinch at the thought of a brutal sports massage. So I had high hopes for my session with Christine. What is clinical massage therapy? Christine explains that it combines many advanced techniques from both Eastern and Western disciplines. Each session is tailored to relieve pain in the body and targets muscle imbalance in a holistic way. The

OR ME, Christine prescribed an indulgent two-hour massage, combining Trigger Point Therapy, Myofacial Release, Fire and Ice (alternate use of hot and cold stones) and just a tiny bit of sports massage (well, as much as I could bear). An initial indepth consultation allows her to get a better understanding of any pain you may be suffering from and to skillfully employ different techniques where needed. Christine’s technique is eerily intuitive – she clearly understood more about my body than I did – releasing stiff joints, correcting a hip imbalance and allowing me to transcend to a state of complete relaxation by the end of the massage. For the next few days my body felt amazing. The purpose built treatment room at Rendlesham is a light, calming space where anyone – women, men, young and old – will feel at ease, which is particularly good for the chaps who can find the female-focus of the average beauty salon a little intimidating. I can highly recommend. n REVIEW: LAURA HALL

Christine recommends treatment plans of between 1-6 sessions. Back massage £30, Full Body Massage £40. Call 01394 420913 or 07766 2233527. www.christineringrose.co.uk

BE RT REPO

The inside scoop on... Semi-Permanent Make-Up

BY ALICE MANNING

About 10 years ago I received an email with the subject line ‘semi-permanent make-up’ and I winced at the thought of needles and botched brows. Oh how wrong I was. Treatments offering subtly enhanced eyeliner and fuller eyebrows and lips are transforming daily beauty regimes. After all, who doesn’t want to wake-up with wellgroomed brows, fuller lips and beautifully-defined eyes – without a scrap of make-up? WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT?

Pharmaceutically-graded and hypoallergenic pigments (book a consultation to ensure these standards) are used to tattoo the dermis of the skin (this isn’t as deep as traditional tattoos and as a result isn’t as permanent) to naturally enhance your features. Does it hurt? Anaesthetic cream is applied and, while it isn’t comfortable, it isn’t painful. WHERE TO GO?

There are plenty of clinics and salons offering these treatments now. Make sure you check all their health and safety credentials and read the testimonials. A friend’s recommendation is ideal. We’re hearing good reviews about Finishing Touches Clinic in Kesgrave and owner Toni Vincent-Panich’s talents, who explains a little more about the phenomenon. “Semi-permanent make-up is great for many people; from gym addicts who

60

want to look good while working out or swimming, to those who want more of a made-up look and it is also ideal for sufferers of alopecia or trichotillomania, or people that have undergone chemotherapy and lost their natural hair,” she says. TONI’S TOP 3 TATTOO TIPS 1. Brows usually heal within a

week but you should allow a minimum or four weeks, most people will experience some immediate swelling with their lips but this goes down within a day or two and there may be some immediate swelling with eyeliner tattoos but this only lasts for the remainder of the day. 2. Aftercare is really important to obtain the best results. The area of treatment needs to be kept completely dry for at least 48 after the procedure to allow the pigment to settle. I also suggest using a vitamin A and D ointment on the area to help with healing.

A light scab may form and it’s vital important you don’t scratch or pick. 3. The results can last anywhere from six months to three years, with the suggestion of annual colour boosts. JUST IN CASE…

As with tattoos, semi-permanent make-up can be corrected but it isn’t as simple as it sounds. For the best advice, head for the Juliet John Cosmetic and Laser Clinic, who offer laser tattoo removal and correction, or Finishing Touches Clinic for non-laser removal. n www.finishingtouchesclinic.co.uk 07769 245899

EAR NOT, devotees of the beloved Carolyn Hammond Beauty Clinic, the name may have changed, the premises expanded and there might be the odd new face around too, but everything you know and love about this long-established beauty salon remains the same. Since taking over Carolyn Hammond Beauty Clinic in 2010, Hayley Capey and her

62

team worked hard to continue to develop the business over the next five years – their aim to create a bespoke salon with the highest standards. But this autumn Hayley felt the time was right to give the business a brand new identity and so, in September, the salon was refurbished and rebranded as Lift Beauty Clinic bringing a new feel to the salon with its crisp new logo and unique decor whilst

keeping the ethos strongly in place. Hayley’s vision has always been to create a salon where her clients would receive the highest standard in treatments – excelling in customer service whilst cocooning them in the ambient tranquility of the clinic. “We want every client to leave the salon feeling "lifted". So it seemed ‘Lift’ was the logical new name for the clinic.” Hayley explains. They have been lucky enough

Hot Stone Reflexology at Karen Fawcett Reflexology

W

HEN KAREN FAWCETT Reflexology invited Vanilla along for a Hot Stone treatment I jumped at the chance. I love having my feet massaged – especially after a hard day’s work. Karen’s room was so inviting, with warmly lit candles and a couch with a cosy blanket – all of this waiting for me on a very rainy, dreary day in August. Heaven! The treatment takes about an hour and a quarter but before she starts Karen spent a while asking me about my past medical history and any ailments I have been enduring recently, in order to give me the best treatment possible. Karen explained that Hot Stone Reflexology is where hot basalt stones of varying sizes are incorporated into a reflexology session, greatly enhancing the benefits of the treatment. Large stones warm and massage the lower legs and feet, whilst smaller stones work specific reflex points. Overall the treatment is warming, comforting and extremely relaxing. The heat penetrates the reflex points to a much deeper level than finger pressure – it is estimated that it is up to five times more powerful than a traditional reflexology session. The benefits are deep relaxation, improved circulation, a boosted immune system and feeling rejuvenated, amongst others. Karen is a fully qualified reflexologist with many years of experience. As well as traditional and hot stone reflexology, she is also qualified in hand and vertical reflexology therapy (VRT) and

64

a member of the Association of Reflexologists. Karen mentioned that her clients for traditional reflexology range in age from 6 weeks to 99 years old! The benefits to all age groups is incredible. Babies and children with digestive issues such as constipation and coughs and colds respond very well to reflexology as do teenagers who might be suffering with anxiety and hormonal issues. Although reflexologists do not diagnose or cure health disorders, millions of people have found that their bodies respond very well and conditions such as stress, headaches, back pain, hormonal imbalances, MS, fertility, anxiety, sinusitis to name but a few, have improved. It can of course be just for pleasure!

Having the hot stones on my feet and massaging my legs was amazing – so relaxing, warm and comforting, I could have stayed forever. After the treatment Karen talked me through the results and let me know the areas which require more support. I was so impressed with hot stone reflexology and Karen that I booked my next session there and then. Can’t wait! MICHELLE NICOLL 01473 659462 Reflexology session £28 Hot Stone Reflexology £38

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...Sue Carter and her team at Image

DO I REALLY NEED TO HAVE A PATCH TEST BEFORE TINTING, PERMING OR EYELASH EXTENSIONS? It is essential to ensure that you have a patch test at least 24 hours before any tinting, perming or eyelash extension treatments. The reason for this is to make sure that you are not sensitive to the products which are to be used around the eye area. More importantly, it is to ensure that you do not have a reaction to any of the products used. A reaction can be anything from reddening of the area to inflamed, sore irritated skin. You can imagine that if you are one of the unlucky ones who does experience a reaction, your eyes could become swollen, puffy, itchy and red. I have seen adverse effects of such products on the skin where a patch test has not been carried out and it is not pretty! I always ensure that all of my clients have had a test, even if they have had the treatment done elsewhere, as product ingredients can vary. MY PERFUME NEVER SEEMS TO LAST MORE THAN A HOUR OR SO. HOW CAN I MAKE IT LAST LONGER? Perfume evaporates faster from dry skin so ensure that your skin is well moisturised. A top tip here is to dab petroleum jelly (Vaseline) onto pulse points

66

prior to spritzing your perfume and you will find that your fragrance lasts a lot longer. You could also spritz your clothes and hair and don’t forget to spritz your ankles and behind your knees as scent rises. Never spray your perfume on to skin which is to be exposed to the sun, such as neck and décolletage, as it reacts with UV rays and can cause pigmentation. I SUFFER WITH PAINFUL INGROWING TOENAILS, WHAT CAUSES THEM AND HOW CAN I PREVENT THEM? There are several possible causes of an ingrown toenail, including incorrectly cutting nails, tight fitting shoes or a nail infection. To help prevent an ingrown toenail, cut nails straight across rather than rounding at corners, as this stops nails growing into the skin. When your skin is soft – ideally after a hot foot soak or bath – gently push the skin away with a cuticle pusher or cotton bud. Also make sure that your shoes are not too tight and are comfortable with space around the toes. I KEEP MY FACE AND BODY CLEANSING CLOTH IN THE SHOWER AND IT NEVER FULLY DRIES OUT BETWEEN USES. DOES THIS MATTER? Yes. Moisture that lingers in a cleansing cloth, flannel or puff is a breeding ground for bacteria, so after using it rinse it clean and take it out of the shower area and place it somewhere wher it can fully dry – near a radiator or open window. You could even microwave it for 30 seconds before each use to ensure that it is fully dry. n

CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF

A

S APPLAUD COFFEE (formerly Baker & Barista) celebrates two years since it first opened its doors in Ipswich, sisters Hannah Huntly and Beth Cook discuss their success as an independent coffee house. In 2013 the cafe market in Ipswich seemed saturated, with chains from Starbucks to Patisserie Valerie dominating. Despite the existing competition, Hannah and Beth were confident that there was a niche for an independent coffee shop: ‘From the outset we both felt that what we were offering was different.’ Nestled between unique gift shops, beauty retreats and florists on St Peter’s Street, Applaud Coffee is in independent

72

heaven. With vintage decor, a locally roasted house blend of coffee and a wide selection of homemade cakes, it has gained a loyal customer following. According to Hannah, who is also an illustrator, ‘we knew that there were a lot of creative people in Ipswich who would appreciate the food, the drink and the aesthetic.’ After completing courses at the London School of Coffee and several research trips to independent coffee houses, the sisters recognised the importance of local suppliers. The commitment to Suffolk is apparent in everything from the reclaimed vintage furniture from Saxmundham to the local cheeses, the home-made

lemonade to the flowers from neighbours Myrtle and Mint. The coffee house is founded on customer service and a genuine community feel; as Beth states, ‘most days it doesn’t’ feel like work, there are so many regulars that it feels like we are just serving friends.’ This is fostered by the atmosphere on St Peters Street where it is not uncommon for proprietors to lend each other milk or sugar if someone runs out! Founded on community spirit and high quality local produce, Applaud Coffee gives a genuine independent alternative to chains for those seeking artisan coffee, homemade food, vintage decor and a welcoming atmosphere. S

T PETERS STREET – and its run-in St Nicholas – has become the most fashionable little lane in Ipswich and the presence of this cool little coffee shop has been one of the many reasons why a trip up or down to the waterfront has to go this way. It’s definitely worth the short walk from the Giles statue for a different take on the age-old cakes and heat-to-eat pannini formula of the chain coffee shops and these baristas know their business well – this is a cappuccino of class, a latte with style, and a proper pot of freshly brewed tea. Applaud Coffee is arty, simple, stylish and sweet, with a bounty of gorgeous cakes, loaves and cookies lining the tiny counter in the doorway and behind that a backroom of rustic tables, chairs and benches, spotted with milk bottles filled with flowers and sprigs. Beyond is a pretty garden courtyard filled with pots and plants, in the sheltered lull of a network of ancient cottages with their crooked chimneys and ageing tiled roofs, dating back to beyond the Tudors. The food is fresh and fabulous – no toasties straight out of the cellophane here. It’s not pretentious but it is on trend – the wonderful aubergine dish of baba ganoush, nestled up with roasted vegetables in a warm ciabatta, a superb bagel stuffed with lashings of proper smoked salmon, oozing with cream cheese and laced with chopped chives, or Serrano ham, homemade pesto and mozzarella melt in a freshly baked ciabatta, a zingy roasted courgette, pea and feta quiche – encased in gorgeous pastry – and served with a tangy tangle of mixed dressed leaves. T

HE SCRUBBED PINE tables are laid with carafes of fresh water flavoured with a leafy branch of mint. The amazing coffee – beautifully presented – comes in mix-matched retro sixties and seventies crockery, and pots of tea are accompanied by miniature milk bottles. The daily papers and magazines are scattered about and there’s no rush among the happy mix of customers, enjoying the calm and coffee. The walls are lined with art for sale by some of the hippest local artists and craftspeople of the moment. It is a tranquil place for a tea break and a lovely stop for lunch. New on the menu is afternoon tea at £12.50 a head, featuring a pot of tea or cup of coffee with a selection of sandwiches, homemade cakes and of course, a fresh fruit scone with jam and clotted cream. An absolute treat in a very cool retreat. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

HE WHITE HART at Hadleigh dates back to the 15th and 16th century and its latest incarnation, blossoming into a new foodie pub which keeps the friendly village local feel at its core, is both refreshing and relaxing. This is a pub to while away hours with friends, a pint, a bottle of wine, in the company of effervescent and enthusiastic hosts and some honest fare. New landlord Simon and his family are flying high on their success with various other foodie ventures in Suffolk, including the Smugglers at Hadleigh and a sought-after catering company. They are passionate about food and its provenance, growing their own, raising Hereford beef and breeding

Ryland sheep for the table, keeping chickens and bees and serving this, the freshest produce, across the menu. Along with country produce, fish fresh off the boat is up on the blackboard, alongside Suffolk’s finest seasonal fare, each day. The pub is ancient, heavy oak beams, furnished with eclectic auction – find dining sets, blue grey walls lit up by shafts of light from the setting sun through leaded windows and a leather sofa nestling next to the wood-burner. The food is wholesome and hearty, with that heavy emphasis on ‘local’ and ‘in season’. The fish board was thriving – whole mackerel, whole seabass, whole lemon sole, kippers with poached eggs – and on the starter menu

the salmon fishcake with tartare sauce was a healthy mash up of potato and thick flakey pink fish, a nostalgic nod to bubble and squeak. The lamb scrumpets, tiny nuggets of battered braised lamb, moistened by a sumptuous anchovy-laced gravy, headlined the starter menu alongside chargrilled tender broccoli, a platter of barbecue ribs and a heritage tomato salad with goats cheese and hazelnuts. Mains include a fabulous local Red Poll rib eye steak, which came nestling next to a layer of roasted potato terrine – a twist on the steak and chip pub grub staple. Roast supreme of salmon was served with new potatoes,

The food is wholesome and hearty, with that heavy emphasis on ‘local’ and ‘in season’ lamb came with a dreamy Dauphinose and crab apple jus. Desserts include their own honey from the garden served with a warm Baron Bigod brie and hazelnuts, a delicious Hill Farm Rapeseed Oil cake with

fresh raspberries and double cream, and a chocolate brownie heaving with port-poached cherries and clotted cream. The silky finish of the superb Caravaggio coffee – from a machine newly imported from Italy – was a lovely end to a good meal. The White Hart deserves to do well. They have worked hard to create interesting good local food and to restore the pub to its former glory. It is a cheery place, large and spacious, unpretentious but nonetheless welcoming and warm, echoing with the ghosts of good times past and the promise of a satisfying future. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

THEATRE

New Wolsey Theatre 19-24 OCTOBER

Flare Path

An epic wartime romance by celebrated playwright Terence Rattigan, from the producers behind the hit touring productions Birdsong and Three Men In A Boat. Based on Rattigan’s experiences as a tail gunner during World War II, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. Set in 1942 against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path tells the story of former actress Patricia, the wife of RAF pilot Teddy, as their marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood idol Peter Kyle. An unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies. Combining highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear, camaraderie and passion experienced by the men and women who fought to save their country, their families and each other. With heart tugging, human emotion,

Flare Path opens an unforgettable window into a pivotal moment in our history. Tickets £10-£25

Gary Avis Suffolk’s Royal Ballet Master

My East Coast Life Gary Avis grew up in Ipswich and has enjoyed a long career at the Royal Opera House with the Royal Ballet. He’s danced around the world with leading ballerinas, at the closing ceremony of The Olympics and famously for Strictly fans did a spellbinding jive with Darcey Bussell. His heart however, is in Suffolk.

What will you be dancing and what is the charity? I am dancing Lieder by Alastair Marriott with international ballerina, Mara Galeazzi, who is flying over from Italy especially for the occasion. The High Sheriff of Suffolk is holding the gala on September 24 at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds to launch Suffolk Community Foundation’s new Arts and Culture Fund.

How did you start dancing? As a child in Ipswich I was really shy and my mother saw a disco dancing course with Tom and Pat Lait and thought it might bring me out of my shell. I loved it and from there joined the Co-op Juniors, which led to ballet classes with Linda Shipton and eventually the Royal Ballet. Why do you love Suffolk? It’s the big open skies and being close to the friends and family I grew up with. For a long time I lived in the Isle of Dogs but have now moved back. It’s worth the two-hour commute each way to wake up in Suffolk every morning. One of the biggest joys is looking over my garden and seeing the sky. What has September and October got in store? I am dancing at the Royal Opera

House as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet. On September 22, it’s being screened live to cinemas across the world, which is a first. Then I’m Ballet Master for Raven Girl by Wayne McGregor and working on a revival of The Two Pigeons by Sir Frederick Ashton, who also lived in Suffolk. I’m also taking a very rare leave of absence from Covent Garden for a charity gala in Suffolk this month.

Can you tell us more about the charity? Although I have always had a home in the county it wasn’t until moving back here that I discovered Suffolk Community Foundation and the amazing work it does. It’s such a wonderful and effective organization, giving out grants to the small charities and organizations that really make a difference. Their new Arts and Culture Fund is a brilliant way to reach out and help people using the creative arts to improve lives and communities, so I’m really excited to support the Foundation by taking part.
