RADIANT BEAUTY OFFERS OTHER TREATMENTS: CHEMICAL PEELS
Mild chemical peels are used to exfoliate and to brighten skin tone. Importantly, peels also stimulate collagen production. Collagen stimulation is one of the secrets for preventing fine lines and wrinkles. The experience of having a mild chemical peel is similar to having a facial except the peel is actually therapeutic and will work to improve the quality and appearance of the skin. There is no significant ‘down time ‘ with a mild peel. Dr. Walker will also advise about simple, clinically effective and cost effective ways to care for the skin after a peel. Stronger peels can be done to even skin tone and reduce the effects of sun damage to the skin. These peels actually cause some shedding of skin but are very effective if skin has been exposed to too much sun or tanning. CRYOTHERAPY
This is a freezing treatment which is very effective for treating those ugly age spots on the hands and face. It usually only requires one session and the dark patches just flake off in about two weeks time.
PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION
Unwanted hair is a common problem in women and men. The traditional methods of removing hair such as shaving and tweezing, depilatories, waxing, and electrolysis only produce temporary results and can generally only be carried out in relatively small areas. Permanent hair reduction can now be achieved using intense pulsed light technology (IPL). IPL systems use light which is pulsed very fast to provide quick and comfortable treatments. Pulses of filtered light are directed onto the skin and absorbed by the colour in the hair shaft. The heat from the pulsed light is then transmitted to the hair follicle, damaging the stem cells within so that re-growth is not possible. The best results occur in those with light skin and dark hair. Coarse hair responds better than fine hair. MICRODERMABRASION
Microdermabasion is a method of mechanically exfoliating the top layer of skin by applying tiny, rough crystalline grains to buff away the surface layer of the skin leaving complexions clearer,
December 2014/January 2015 Vanilla
brighter and blemish free. Dr. Walker’s technique of combining microdermabrasion with a mild chemical peel gives the best results. I did find the right practitioner, and would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Walker to friends.

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by the team at Image Salon
DOES MAKE-UP GO OFF? I'VE HAD SOME LIPSTICKS FOR OVER 4 YEARS! Products such as mascara and foundation will have expiration dates. Using an old foundation could cause break-outs or irritation (or just not work as well). Some cosmetics have the expiry date printed on the package, others have a symbol of a jar with an open lid, number, and letter 'M' The open lid means the expiration date applies once the product is opened or the seal is removed, the number represents how many months it can be used for. Here are our guidelines for how long to keep cosmetics before replacing: Liquids, foundations, cream eye shadows – six months. As it ages,
foundation can go on unevenly, creating a streaky, inconsistent finish. Oils rise to the top and the consistency thickens. Powders, pencil eye liners, powder eye shadows, lipsticks and lipgloss – two
years. Over time, powders with botanical ingredients like aloe or jojoba can become harder to blend and are more likely to crumble, as their trace amounts of water evaporate. Their wearability may decrease and colour pigment may reduce. Liquid eye liner, mascara
– three months. Preservatives
60
in a mascara only work for so long. You may find it goes chalky and powdery, and any lengthening or thickening fibres often separate from the fluid, so you will no longer be able to get a smooth, even coat. A great tip for extending the life of your mascara is to never pump the wand. When you do this, it pushes air into the tube, causing it to dry out faster. Instead, slowly draw out and twist the brush to scrape the tube’s interior and pick up product. I HAD MY TOP LIP WAXED AND A DAY LATER LITTLE WHITE SPOTS APPEARED. HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS? After having the upper lip waxed it is very important to follow the correct aftercare given to you by your therapist, to stop any irritation which may cause these little white spots. Irritation may have occurred if the area has been touched after waxing (our hands harbour so much bacteria) or if a non-mineral make-up has been applied to the area. Make-up can clog the pores resulting in spots, especially after waxing, as the pores are open. It is a good idea to apply an aloe vera based cream or gel to the area, for a few hours after the wax, to help reduce any redness. We would also advise that you wear a mineral powder on the area as it will soothe, calm and protect the skin. It is also essential that you stay clear of the sun for a couple of days and keep the waxed area protected, to prevent pigmentation occurring. If you cannot avoid being out in full sun, then please make sure you apply a good sun block to the area! n

Christmas icing inspiration by Graham Weare, award-winning sugar craft guru and lecturer at the Outrageous Cake Academy
The Outrageously Rich Fruit Cake
C
HRISTMAS JUST ISN’T Christmas without a sumptuously rich fruitcake, infused with brandy, or rum (or even fruit juice for the teetotal) decorated in either traditional or contemporary fun style. The secret is to make the cake as early as possible and decorate as late as you dare. For our Rudolf the Reindeer cake we used smooth apricot jam, which was pre-boiled and sieved to coat the cake. Roll out 1.5lbs white marzipan Into rough circle, follow with sugar paste, also weighing 1.5lbs. Stick with brandy, egg white or boiled water, and evenly spread all over cake. For the reindeer, we used brown icing, shaped into ovals (save the remaining bits for the necks), white sugar paste for eyes, black for the noses and red for tongues and extras. The top is a bass relief moulded from sugar paste and the message is piped on with icing. The finishing touches are the antlers made with a pretzel stick, or you can use royal icing.
December 2014/January 2015 Vanilla
FOR THE CAKE: 1 Beat the butter and sugar into a cream, beat in treacle and eggs adding a little flour with each egg and stir in remainder of flour with the nuts and all fruit, before moistening with brandy or fruit juice. 2 Turn into a nine-inch cake tin, which has been greased and lined with greaseproof paper, with mixture slightly dipped in the centre. 3 Put into a cold oven at 150˚C or 1.5 gas and cook for 4.5 hours (3.5 hours in fan oven). TOP TIPS
l Prepare your ingredients on day one and soak fruit in brandy (bolied water or fruit juice). Bake on day two, then allow cake to cool before decorating nearer to Christmas Day. l Wrap brown paper around outside of tin. You can never have too much brandy! Store in airtight container in a cool place out of sunlight but not in a fridge, or anywhere damp.
