GLEMHAM HALL NEW VENUE FOR ART FOR CURE EXHIBITION ❯❯ After the hugely successful 2014 Art for Cure Exhibition, the organisers Belinda Gray and Sally Ball will be organising a second event this spring. The first art and sculpture exhibition, held at Bredfield House, achieved staggering sales in excess of £200,000 in just one weekend. The chosen charity, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, was given £100,000 to help in its battle to fight breast cancer; a disease that both Belinda and Sally have been successfully treated for in the last three years. Art for Cure 2016, at this exciting new venue, is expected to be an even
Frankie and Karen Shelley from Rococco Hair and Beauty Salon in Ipswich, recently organised a 'Charity Fashion Show and Ladies Lunch’ with Coes, at Aurora Bar and Restaurant. They managed to raise £2,500 for the local charity Macmillan Woolverstone Wish. All proceeds will go towards the build of the new Cancer Treatment Centre at Ipswich Hospital. “The Woolverstone Wish is a charity very close to my heart.” said Frankie, “My dad received both his radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment in the old Woolverstone Ward, so I saw for myself the cramped conditions in which people were receiving their treatment.”

There will be over 80 artists and sculptors exhibiting – works will be a specially curated selection of nationally renowned artists as well as from Suffolk’s wealth of local talent. www.artforcure.org.uk

“We’re content that our family can make the most of our assets, without any tax problems, after we’ve passed away”
Inheritance tax – planning for the future MY PROBLEM: Only just in our fifties, inheritance tax planning wasn’t something that Peter and I had put on the radar – at least not for the immediate future. We’re both still working and retirement is a long way off. With grandchildren newly on the scene, though, we had been thinking about updating our wills. Especially as we’d been reading a lot in the papers about a new Residence Nil Rate Band being brought in, to increase the amount we could leave free of inheritance tax to £1m. Totting up our assets, we knew we had investments of around £300,000 and property worth around £500,000, so we decided we would see a solicitor to make sure we had everything planned out correctly, as the new Residence Nil Rate Band seemed a little complicated. ANNE, WOODBRIDGE
16
HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
Peter has always kept a keen eye on financial planning and we wrote our wills some years ago, when our own children were still small. While they’re both adults now, nothing had changed in terms of how our assets would be split if we were to pass away, so we hadn’t thought to review our wills or our letters of wishes. Our first grandchild arrived a year or so ago and this led us to start thinking about inheritance again. Hearing about the government’s latest plans to increase the amount we could pass on without attracting inheritance tax was the prod we needed to make sure we had everything in order. We had used Barker Gotelee for a number of years, for buying and selling our house, and for contracts and things for Peter’s business, so we knew they’d Vanilla February/March 2016
REAL LIVES
be able to help. We made an appointment with Nick Palmer and went to their offices in Martlesham the following week. When Peter explained that we were a little confused about the new Residence Nil Rate Band, Nick told us that many people had contacted him with the same questions. He said that the new legislation was just in the proposal stage at the moment and that, if it was all agreed, it wouldn’t come into force until April 2017. He also explained that the £1m figure was a little misleading, as the legislation would be rolled out incrementally. He explained that, as current legislation stands, we could leave up to £325,000 each tax free to our children – a total of £650,000 between us. This is known as the Nil Rate Band and could be made up of any assets that we own, such as property, savings or a combination of both. The government’s new proposals mean we may be able to each pass on an additional amount, tax free, to our children if we leave a property that we have lived in as our main residence to one or more of our direct descendants. He said that this amount is planned to be £100,000 each initially, and the government is proposing to increase this by £25,000 for the following three years, reaching a total of £175,000 each by 2020.
L
OOKING AT our own financial circumstances, Nick said that, as we were married, if we were to leave
February/March 2016 Vanilla
everything to each other when one of us passed away, there would be no inheritance tax for the surviving partner to pay, and the Nil Rate Band of the deceased would transfer too. This would also be the case with the unused proposed Residence Nil Rate Band. On the death of that surviving partner, after April 2017 and assuming the proposals have become law, there would be two Residence Nil Rate Bands available to offset against our home, as long as we were to leave it to our children or any other direct descendant. The rest of our estate would then be covered by the £650,000 Nil Rate Band, meaning we could leave our entire estate, free of inheritance tax. Nick suggested
that it was a good time to properly review our wills and letters of wishes, being mindful of the potential Residence Nil Rate Band. Taking all of this information on board, we went home to think about our options and to list out our assets so we could make a sound decision. A few weeks later we returned to Barker Gotelee. With all the figures clear in our heads, we briefed Nick and he drew up our new wills, recording our letters of wishes as well. Now Peter and I have a much better understanding of the government’s proposals and we’re content that our family can make the most of our assets, without any tax problems, after we’ve passed away. ■

TAHITIAN PEARL JEWELLERY
A
S THE SPRING SEASON approaches, the fashion colours that are appearing on the high street are predominantly taupe, teal and pastel pinks which would team up perfectly with one of my favourite gemstones Tahitian Pearls. Tahitian pearls are grown in black lipped oysters on atolls off the coast of French Polynesia, where they are protected by large coral reefs. The oysters are harvested offshore by small groups of farmers who tend the oysters for up to two years before removing the pearls. The farmers patience is rewarded with beautiful natural creations that
Tahitian pearls with diamond set clasp £6250
30
are a real pleasure on the eye. The colours are magical from black to grey via green, with the most beautiful a shimmering black with a breath of green and sizes ranging from 8 to 16mm in diameter. When valuing pearls factors to consider include the size the shape (perfectly round is ideal), the colour and the quality and depth of the surface nacre (also known as mother of pearl which makes up the outer coating). Quality of Lustre is very important because if the pearl has been removed too quickly it will lack depth of colour and possibly flake. Our preferred supplier for

TOP 10
WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2016
1. JUST PICKED
Floral arrangements that feature both whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. Couples are looking for freshly picked blooms. These free-form bouquets and centerpieces often include a mix of big and small blossoms in more than one colour.
2. MISMATCHED BRIDESMAIDS
Gone are the days of mandatory bridesmaids uniforms. Now brides are allowing their ladies to choose their own dresses in colours and styles that flatter their bodies. Plus, many of these outfits end up being worn more than once, which we love! It’s a stunning look.

3. BRUNCH WEDDINGS
Serve your guests a brunch instead of dinner. Your wedding needn’t be so extravagant if you are on a smaller budget. A waffle bar with delicious toppings will do the trick. Have your ceremony before the sun reaches its peak and then enjoy cocktail hour under the sun or indoors.
4. INTIMATE DINNERS
Couples now want to focus on quality over quantity. With family style dining tables and low lush arrangements, conversation is highlighted and memories made!

5. A FONDNESS FOR FONTS
There’s such a strong cultural interest in words and graphics that it couldn’t help but spill over into the world of wedding invitations. Using multiple fonts on an all-type invitation adds fresh personality and anything done by hand is in high demand.
7. PINK FIZZ
6. BLUSH & CREAMS
Rosé wine is fast becoming a mainstay at weddings. Couples are including it in the wine selection at dinner, serving rosé champagne for toasts or offering a variety of rosé cocktails.
Very soft palettes, for instance, a blush wedding gown with creamy flowers, or blush details on the table that are subtle and classic.
Who can argue with too much dessert? Couples opting out of cake are replacing it with a variety of sweets and treats.

1. NARROW YOUR CHOICES
Make some preliminary choices before you hit the stores. What colour metal do you prefer: yellow, white or rose? Work these questions out to hone in on what you are looking for. 2. START YOUR SEARCH EARLY
Once you have a basic idea of what you want, head out to the shops. Give yourselves at least two months to browse, research, price and revisit rings that catch your eye. Allow even more time if you're interested in a custom piece; extras such as engraving can take up to one month. 3. BE DIFFERENT
Don't fret if you like platinum while he likes yellow gold. There’s no rule that you have to match metals or even styles. Pick wedding bands that reflect each of your style sensibilities and tastes. However, some aspect of the rings (which can be as simple as an inscription) should match.
8. DESSERTS OTHER THAN CAKE
Woodland-themed florals and decor: dense greenery and sticks or wood slices used to give a woodland feel.
5
WEDDING RING RULES
as rustic with soft details, like harvest tables and dreamcatchers. Lots of texture with pops of colour. White features offset with bold florals and colorful accents.
4. SET A BUDGET
A plain 14k gold ring starts at around £300. Obviously, diamonds can add considerably more to the cost. The price of engraving the inside of the wedding band depends on the font and on whether you have it engraved by hand or machine. 5. BE PRACTICAL
Keep your lifestyle in mind at all times. Remember, you'll be wearing this band every day. The idea is to choose something that seamlessly becomes a part of your life. If you work with your hands often, look for a streamlined ring with little to no frills. Don’t be afraid to be trendy, but make sure the style you choose is something you'll still want to wear in 20 years (not to mention to all the jobs, PTA meetings and social functions in between). or those of us suffering with anxiety, stress, depression or a lack of confidence, the start of a new year can feel like both a blessing and a curse. Stepping into February and those broken resolutions can become more harmful than good if you are focussing on the things you haven’t achieved so far in 2016. Have you finished beating yourself up yet? Meet Katrina Love, a very appropriate surname for a counsellor and life coach with a lot of experience. Katrina enables people to appreciate and learn to love themselves in order to be able to cope with the day to day issues in their lives, and make appropriate plans and goals to live the future they really want. Katrina is a integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor and life coach and her philosophy and techniques were forged through her personal life experience: She became interested in the effects of trauma and vicarious trauma when a close family member had a severe head injury. Through learning to cope and live with her own traumatic situation, Katrina wrote the Life Check Programme and her insight into how the mind works began.

Life Check shows participants how to reset their negative ‘damaging’ habits by using positive mental programming. Learning how to manage feelings and emotions is a key part of the course, empowering you to take responsibility and control of your own internal dialogue to concentrate on the goals you really want to achieve. Rather than beating yourself about the things you haven’t done, focus on the things you want to achieve this year – there’s a whole clean page ahead of you to be happy and do anything you want to. The sky is not the limit, your mind is!”

Health and fitness advice can often be conicting and confusing, and a commonly encountered misconception is that strength and resistance training is only appropriate for people wanting to bulk out. If the aim is weight loss, resistance and strength training will not only increase your heart rate during the class, but also raise your body's metabolic rate during the subsequent muscle repair process. SPOTLIGHT OLIVIA CASTLE THE JAZZ SINGER
Described by Laurie Holloway as “The best vocalist I’ve played for, for a long time and a class act!” and as a “genuine talent” by Sir Michael Parkinson, local jazz singer Olivia Castle has created quite a stir in a relatively short period of time, winning radio play from all three regional BBC radio stations. A runner-up in the BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year final of 2008, Olivia has continued to study and refine her craft resulting in the recent release of her album, Siren Song. Olivia’s warm vocals are a crossover between Jazz and Easy-Listening and her album is packed with American Songbook standards such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Making Whoopee. Working alongside a team of creatives, who have worked with some big names in the industry, has encouraged Olivia to experiment. Her arrangements pay homage to the blues, ballads and swing and a lifelong love of performance which began when she watched her mother perform with a jazz trio. She recently learned that her greatgrandfather was also musically gifted, touring Europe in the 1920s as a member of The Padureano Jazz band. Olivia has lived in East Suffolk her entire life, telling Vanilla, “It is a place I will always consider home and somewhere I am proud to have come from. There is so much talent springing out of the county given that Ed Sheeran, Laura Wright and I have all lived and been schooled in Framlingham – there must be something in the water.” Siren Song is out now and you can find out more from www.oliviacastle.com

Elizabeth Arden Pro boasts all three fundamental factors for maximum skin health; sunscreen (SPF 50), DNA Enzymes and antioxidant protection. £59 Bodylines Salon

Hopi Ear Candling at Leanne Marie Beauty in Henley
HAT A JOY not to have to negotiate a town centre for a sublime pampering session. Leanne Marie Professional Skincare and Beauty salon is a delightful addition to the village of Henley, just five miles outside Ipswich. Leanne Marie has 12 years’ experience in the beauty industry and has run her own business for the past eight. Over this time she has expanded her knowledge base to offer high levels of skincare and waxing along with a range of other beauty treatments. Leanne and her young family moved to Henley just over a year ago, and her new salon will undoubtedly be warmly welcomed. She works alongside two therapists, Amanda Rose and Kate Dare, who offer a variety of beauty and nail treatments. Says Leanne: “I feel extremely

lucky to have such a loyal and supportive network of clients and really excited for the future of my new salon.” TRIED & TESTED Vanilla were kindly invited to experience a treatment and opted for the more unusual Hopi ear candling. This traditional therapy originates with the Hopi Indian tribe of the American south-west where hollow rolled columns of cotton flax were impregnated with beeswax. Now known as Hopi candles, they also contain honey, sage, St John’s wort and camomile. I lay on my side and a candle was gently inserted as far as was comfortable into the ear canal. “You'll hear a noise like sizzling bacon,” Amanda Rose told me as she lit the candle. Yes, and

a gentle "whooshing", warming sensation. She held it steady and after 10 minutes the candle had burned down to about an inch and a half from the ear. Amanda put out the flame. I rolled over and the process was repeated for the other ear. The £30 treatment took 45 minutes and included an amazing pressure-point facial massage plus neck and shoulders. Heavenly. Practitioners say the candles work like a chimney, drawing out impurities. Most burn away, although some may be found in the candle wax residue or appear (on a cotton bud) a day or two after treatment. The theory is that the warm smoke softens earwax while the honey and sage coat the ear canal, soothing the skin. The temperature difference between the inner and outer ear canals can help to ease tinnitus, pressure and earache, and it was certainly effective for itchiness. My ears felt like they were on cloud nine! n

MY SKIN IS BECOMING MORE SENSITIVE TO WAXING TREATMENTS. I DON’T WANT TO GO BACK TO SHAVING CAN YOU SUGGEST ANY ALTERNATIVES? A: I would suggest that you firstly find out what type of wax is being used and whether or not this has been changed recently. There are several types of warm wax available; honey, cream, tea tree, chocolate – you may be sensitive to a particuler type. You could ask your therapist to apply a barrier to your skin prior to the wax being applied as this will help to reduce the reaction or apply a cold compress or towel to the area. If the warm wax hasn't been changed then it would be sensible to look at other forms of hair removal. You could consider hot wax this is similar to warm wax but the difference is that it has a higher temperature and it sets on the skin and peeled away quickly to remove the hairs. Hot wax sets around the hairs rather than the skin. The heat encourages your pores and hair follicles to open up making it easy to remove hair without irritating the skin. You could also consider threading depending on the area, as this is generally done on facial areas. Threading removes the entire hair follicle, lasting up to 6 weeks
I’M 28 AND AFTER A RECENT HOLIDAY, MY FACE PEELED AND I’M LEFT WITH UNEVEN PATCHES ON MY FACE. COULD THIS BE THE START OF AGE SPOTS ALREADY? This sounds like pigmentation caused by over-exposure and damage from the sun and their harmful UVA/UVB rays. Your skin will need time to repair but unfortunately the damage which has been caused is irreversible and it is essential that you use a moisturiser with at least a 30 SPF to prevent further damage. Even though it is not hot here the sun still omits harmful rays even on a cloudy day. You may also want to consider having facials which target skin pigmentation such as light therapy, microdermabrasion or laser treatment. I TRAPPED MY NAIL A FEW MONTHS AGO AND NOW ITS TURNED BLACK AND IS LIFTING AWAY FROM THE NAIL BED. WILL I LOSE THAT NAIL? Once the nail has lifted away from the nail bed you should be able to see a new nail growing underneath. The new nail is causing the damaged nail to separate from the nail bed as it is starting grow it no longer needs to be protected. Make sure that you do not pick at the damaged nail and you allow the old nail to naturally fall away. Once the damaged nail has fallen off it would be best to get an extension placed on top of the new nail, as this will help to train it to grown back into a normal nail (without ridges, vertical splits and dents). I would advise seeking advice from a reputable nail salon or beauty salon. n

Elizabeth Arden Pro Peel to Reveal Facial at Bodylines Salon
A
s someone who usually exits a facial with a blotchy red face and heads home to put on some make-up and generally “undo” what’s just been done, it was with some trepidation that I entered Bodylines on Tacket Street, Ipswich, to trial their Elizabeth Arden Pro ‘Peel and Reveal’ facial. I was greeted by Nicola, the salon owner, herself a very experienced and knowledgeable beauty therapist. She explained the technology behind this particular facial and the products involved. Nicola talked about a new era of “cosmoceuticals” and described how the products in the Elizabeth Arden Pro range worked. It was fascinating to hear about the science behind them, although chemistry was never my strong subject! The “Peel and Reveal” has
Van
TRIEilla & TESTD ED
been developed to prepare the skin for a facial peel, but, as Nicola explained, the Elizabeth Arden Pro is nothing like the scary-sounding chemical peels of a few years ago. Nicola gently double-cleansed and exfoliated my face and gave me a pressure-point massage, which was lovely and relaxing. She then applied a replenishing masque to firm and hydrate my skin. She told me I might feel some tingling but it was only a very slight sensation. While the masque was working, Nicola gave me a taster of a full Hydration Peel across my upper arms, shoulders and décolletage (a pre-peel solution
followed by Hydration Peel). She explained it could work wonders for any problem areas such as bumpy, mottled areas on the upper arms. Nicola gently sponged off the masque and then worked across my face and neck using Peel Pads – the multitasking exfoliating treatment for skin brightening (rejuvenation) and refining. Next she applied a cellular recovery serum, followed by a moisturising facial cream and lastly a fabulous product called Triple Action Protector, a tinted, hydrating, anti-ageing cream with SPF 50. Up until now I’ve been a bit cynical about facial treatments and products which make extravagant claims, but I have to say I was really impressed with how my skin looked and felt afterwards. My face, as well as my shoulders and arms, felt so smooth and soft, I’m thinking that if this is what the new generation of peel products can do, count me in! n REVIEW: SALLY MERRIWEATHER

Working shutters and egg and dart cornice intact
HOME BLOG BY JULIA NELSON-ELGAR INTERIOR DESIGNER AT NELSON DESIGN UK
Labour of Love 3.6 metre-high ceilings (my pupils are dilating). Original egg and dart cornice (my heart is racing). Deep skirting and architrave (I’m becoming breathless). Original two-metre-high sash windows with working shutters (I’m blushing). Original herringbone parquet flooring (I’m speechless) In my business I see properties in varying degrees of neglect. This one is no exception. The first time I saw it, I knew there would be a kind of getting to know and falling in love with the old place. I often find that under the years of dust and neglect there are little surprises waiting to be discovered and loved. I remember the day I pulled up the old carpet to reveal a stunning oak herringbone parquet floor. I had an idea there may be something under it. And it was one of many blessings and little surprises! The Victorian architrave and skirting still have their wonderful crisp lines. They haven’t been
repainted over and over. We took out a stud wall built to create a kitchen at the end of the large reception room. It was a blessing to find that the previous builders 20 to 25 years ago took so much care with constructing the wall. Neither the wonderfully decorative ceiling plaster nor the exceptional egg and dart cornice was damaged. And as the cornice has not been painted over and over again either, the detail is still crisp and decorative. The picture rail will be transformed to its former glory when the white plastic conduit boxing is removed and all the electrical cables have been chased into the walls. So far this Victorian love affair has been a real labour of love. The only hidden horror was a small amount of damp. The property has happily let us remove walls, old tiles, update the plumbing and electrics. A new kitchen and bathroom will be installed very sympathetic to the Victorian ethos. Paint colours, wallpapers and fabrics I have suggested have all hearts a-flutter. The property will be restored and loved with as much care and concern as a long-term relationship should be. I fool myself that I have managed to get over my crush on this property. One day I hope I can look it in the eye without blushing. n

2016 COLOUR TRENDS
BLUE IS THE NEW GREY
Wallpaper: Hampstead Penumbra, £57 per roll Paint on walls: Celestial Blue The Little Greene Paint Company February/March 2016 Vanilla
With Christmas well and truly over and decorations packed away, it is the time of year to spring clean or, better still, bring new vibrancy and vigour to your home with a redecoration project.
2016 will see a shift away from hard, graphic interiors to a softer, more natural feel, meaning that blue really is the new grey! We instinctively gravitate towards colours that connect us with nature. As a consequence the sky and sea evoke feelings of escapism, relaxation and reflection. Key colours this season will be teals and inky blues paired with softer, neutral tones. The Little Greene Paint Company has launched a capsule collection entitled “Blue”, featuring 21 shades with a co-ordinating wallpaper range, “20th Century Papers”. Banishing the belief that blue is a cold colour, the palette encompasses a wide spectrum of tones, from dramatic indigo to muted linen. This collection certainly demonstrates that blue is a versatile colour group instilling calm and tranquillity.

2016 COLOUR TRENDS February sees the launch of nine new paint colours from Farrow & Ball so there really is no better time to grab a paint chart and inject some fresh colour into your life. The new collection is predominantly neutrals, blues and greens, beautifully complementing their existing colour range. Inchyra Blue is a dark Georgian-inspired colour with a hint of grey and green and makes a perfect pairing with Drop Cloth, a rich

stony neutral. Peignoir is also a favourite – a soft, sophisticated pink with a hint of grey. The word comes from the French peigner, to comb hair, and describes a garment worn while doing so. This refined, classy hue is a modern twist on pink, creating a calm and serene atmosphere.

5. Mixed flooring With each new year come new fashions: as far as flooring goes, the latest trend is to mix and match. Mixing flooring means you can find exactly the right solution for your specific needs – for example using different floor types to define different areas.
It works especially well with the stairs and hallway area of your home. Using a vinyl or wood flooring in the hall is an excellent way to deal with the mud, dirt and damp which shoes bring in from the outside. The hardwearing surface is easy to clean and stops grime finding its way into carpets in the rest of the house. Another way to spin this trend is by using different colours within your flooring scheme. Whether you prefer a splash of vivid colour to complement a neutral background or a subtle selection of muted shades, the end result is not only stylish and contemporary but unique too.

Whatever your new flooring design requires Archway Carpets can provide it, from our own vinyl and carpeting to hardwood flooring sourced from carefully-selected local suppliers. Set aside roughly a quarter of this mixture. 2 Line a Pyrex dish with parchment paper and pour in the sauce (remembering to save some). 3 Make the pudding: Put the second quantity of evaporated milk and the dates in a pan and bring to the boil. Add the bicarbonate of soda, turn down and leave to simmer. 4 Meanwhile cream together the butter and caster sugar, add the eggs and vanilla and mix. Fold in
flour and then combine with the date mix. 5 Pour your mixture onto the caramel in the Pyrex dish and bake for 30-40 minutes at 160°C. 6 Remove from the oven and rest for 10 minutes. Serve by turning the pudding out so it’s upside down with caramel on top. 7 Add a spoonful of caramel sauce to the top of the pudding and warm (around 10 seconds in a standard microwave) so it melts over. 8 Add a generous scoop of good quality vanilla ice-cream and serve. ollowing extensive refurbishment and redevelopment, The Turks Head in Hasketon is now open and the reaction from guests has been wonderful. We serve real ales, fantastic wine and, above all, delicious food. Through local suppliers, we source the freshest ingredients which our chef uses to create a delicious, ever-changing, seasonal menu. Our Sunday roast, served from 12 to 5pm, is extremely popular. The pub serves a frequently changing list of local cask ales from East Anglia’s wonderful breweries. Our wine list is extensive, from a wonderful house Merlot to a stunning Margaux. We have two inviting log fires in the bar and the snug. Wonderful to lounge in front of after a long cold dog walk.

HE TURK’S HEAD in Hasketon, a superbly stylish village pub following an extensive refurbishment by owners Dominic and Jemima, is definitely one of the gems on the Suffolk foodie trail. The head chef, Mauli, originally from India, with a background in classical French cooking, trained under Antonio Carluccio and was previously head chef at the Black Lion in Long Melford. Now he brings his original approach to working with fresh local produce to The Turk’s Head, creating plates of tastes and flavours which complement rather than shroud each other for a delightful menu, full of surprises and intrigue. The dining room is decorated in dark blue with bare wood tables, sparkling glass, the most amazing lighting fixtures and original artwork. Long windows look out over manicured lawns and there’s plenty
of outside tables too for a warmer spring lunch. The staff are really friendly and charming and the vibe is relaxed and chilled. A Hayman’s London gin and tonic was a great aperitif before starters of Scottish scallops, Stornoway black pudding and a red wine vingarette served on a thick slice of absolutely delicious grilled celeriac. None of the flavours competed and the result was an excellently executed twist on a classic. Homemade ricotta bonbons were baubles of soft creaminess, served with Elvedon Farm’s piquant vegetable piccalilli and scattered with winter herbs. Other choices – local game terrine served with pancetta, madeira jelly and caper berries or confit mackerel fillet, nasturtium root remoulade and salsa verde were just as intriguing. The main courses selection was hearty and warming on this, the Winter menu. Alongside hearty posh pub grub such as Hereford

esserts are smart twists on homely favourites – cider soaked plums, almond crust and vanilla custard being a new take on a plum crumble. The sublime dark chocolate and rum mousse was served with the cinnamon-y vanilla flavour of a tonka bean sauce. The crème caramel was a dreamy creamy delight infused with blood orange. The Turk’s Head do a fantastic two course Sunday lunch menu for £18 – it’s a friendly place with plenty of high chairs and a kid’s menu too. On a wintry foggy frosty night it’s a fabulous place to eat, warm and interesting, and with a magical chef – definitely putting Hasketon on the Suffolk food map. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

sirloin, cod and chips, and Gressingham duck, were a good selection of fresh fish such as grilled red mullet, served with crushed potato, spinach and brown shrimps and Maldon sea-salt baked seabass with violet potato, sorrel sauce and confit fennel. A fabulous slab of gorgeous Dingley Dell pork belly was moistened by the presence of a bed of deep and rich chickpea and chorizo stew, nestling on a pillow of smooth kale, and covered with a slinky crispy sheet of crackling. The star dish, tandoori style Sutton Hoo chicken was brilliant, especially for the salty Stornoway black pudding masala – properly addictive – and comforting cumin potatoes.

THEATRE
New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich highlights 17-20 FEBRUARY Presented by Eclipse Theatre Company, Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Sheffield Theatres
A Raisin in the Sand A ferocious portrayal of working class life on the cusp of the civil rights era, Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama bursts with intense family conflict, racial politics and social consciousness. The Younger family are living in a small apartment that fit them when they were half their number: their hopes, dreams and aspirations on hold for years within the four walls and around the kitchen table. But when a chance to change the course of their future emerges, the

The Last Five Years
A musical romantic comedy that will tug at your heartstrings. Recently a major motion picture, The Last Five Years is an award winning musical from Jason Robert Brown. Starting and ending with the beginning of a passionate love affair, the unique style of storytelling and infectious score makes this one of America's best modern musicals.

in his official duties. The hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to building that church! Surely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control.

Michael Harvey began his career as a carver of letters in stone and ended it designing digital fonts. In the intervening sixty years, he created over 1500 distinctive book jackets, designed multiple letterforms, decorated countless memorials (including the headstone for poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewis) and carved his eighteen-inch-high frieze capital letters into the stone walls of The National Gallery in London. Julie Girling Hintlesham Barns
My East Coast Life
How long have you been running your business ‘Hintlesham Barns’ Hintlesham Barns was set up in 2011 by Maureen Gerber and myself. Family commitments forced Maureen to ‘retire’ in 2012 but I took on the reins of the business, driving it from strength to strength with Maureen remaining a lifelong friend and mentor. The Barns was founded on the ethos that there would be nothing within it we wouldn’t wear or have in our own homes. What inspired you to start your own business? Shopping has always been a great pastime and now I can buy 300 handbags at a time instead of 1 – heaven! I know what I like and fingers crossed, what my customers do as well! Shopping for new stock is a family affair with Simon doing the driving as well as carrying! Even Sam is now well known with suppliers for having such good taste even at 14 years of age.
What did you do before ‘Hintlesham Barns’ From school I joined a Finance Company, very much a man’s world, where I stayed for over 15 years before joining my husband in his business as an Illustrator’s Agent. This entailed working with companies such as BBC on licenced characters – Tellytubbies, Postman Pat, Bob the Builder, before a change of direction beckoned. What do you love most about where you are? I love the fact that no one has to worry about parking meters or access at the Barns. It is great to see wheelchair users coming in and being able to choose their own presents for people. The Coffee Shop is for people to meet up with each other over a coffee with a spot
of shopping afterwards – perfect scenario! You never know what is at the end of a driveway! What plans do you have? The Barns is ever changing as I am always looking out for new suppliers, local, national and European, so a visit to the Barn each month will present a new array of enticing goods. Our Preloved area has been a great success, so this is an area I would like to expand but firstly I have great plans for the Coffee Shop with some new comfy sofas. What do you love most about Suffolk? Geographically, Suffolk is superbly situated to access all points of the country in order to source new product. The sheer diversity of having the varied coastline only 20 minutes away and behind the coastline, acres of rolling countryside unhindered by motorways and topped off by big skies! What are your hidden gems in the area? Hadleigh has the most amazing High Street including the butcher, baker and candlestick maker! It is always my main port of call and I enjoy working with the other businesses in supporting local charities at various fund raising events. n
