Congratulations to the owners of FARMYARD and their new venture THE DIAL HOUSE, the boutique hotel at Reepham.

Hannah Springham and Andrew Jones, who opened Farmyard

Restaurant in St Benedict’s Street in 2017, took over the running of the boutique hotel this May. “We love The Dial House and knew we somehow had to make

it happen as we could see there was massive potential there. The bedrooms are insane and you can browse and buy antiques while you wait for your food. How unique?!” says Hannah. Mr Jones will divide his time between the two sites as executive chef – overseeing menus, sourcing, training and mentoring – while Ms Springham, is launching Marigold Events, for weddings and parties at the venue.

WELL DONE TO... THE FOX AT LYNG, which held the final of its first ever charity bake-off in April and raised £2287.35 for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Judges, Fox’s head chef Vic Rowling along with Richard Bainbridge (winner of Great British menu 2015 and chef/patron of Benedict’s) and Charlie Hodson (Norfolk food hero and appearances on C4’s Sunday Brunch), deemed the winning bake to be that of Amie Abbs.

“The atmosphere was amazing, the weather was glorious, our celebrity judges really got involved and we raised a huge amount of money for charity and hopefully a little awareness.” said Victoria Hunt, 44, owner of the Fox.

COCKTAILS AND TAPAS! This summer St Giles House Hotel are hosting a number of swing events out on their terrace and on Friday 15th June, they kick off with the first instalment. Entry is free and dressing up is optional but what the heck, why not don your tassels and feathers and come and party? Booking is not necessary and walk in guests are celebrated. Sheridan Smith, marketing manager at intu Chapelfield says this summer, it’s all about wearing colour with confidence; “Dresses are your wardrobe warriors this season, and the brighter the better. From cobalt blue to emerald green, sunshine yellow or tomato red; the Crayola trend that was so strong on the catwalk, is now in our stores. It’s a feel-good look that can’t fail to put a smile on your face. “A bright, colourful dress is so versatile too. Be it a midi, maxi, wrap-dress or with a detailed floral print, a bold dress will be worn throughout summer, day or night. Accessorise with a fascinator, mini-bag and heels for a special occasion. You don’t want to overshadow the bride, it’s her day, so don’t go for anything too flamboyant. A jumpsuit with heels can look superb. The key is to be natural and true to yourself.

If you want to wear a hat but have no idea what suits you, talk to a professional and visit a few hat shops. I did this recently and found my perfect style. See A fascinator can look p89about for superb, too. Think stockist’s hiring a hat for the day; details so much cheaper.

Men, a wedding is not a business meeting. Wear a suit, but choose a lovely tie, and match the colour to the outfit of your partner – complement each other to be a stylish couple.

6

Uncomfortable heels are not a good look, far better to wear pretty flats and dress them up with diamanté or bow shoe clips and save yourself from a day of discomfort.

7

Avoid white, that’s the bride’s prerogative, but you need to find colours that suit you best. If you don’t know what suits you, give me a call and come and have your colours done.

Look natural throughout the day, choose understated Ted Baker make-up and you can shirtbig guns pull Bella out the later£95 in Jarrold the day for the evening do with a stronger lipstick, darker eyeshadow or an extra layer of mascara. Don’t feel pressured into buying a hugely expensive new designer outfit just because it’s a wedding. You can find gorgeous things at M&S and local department breaker stores that Wind will be just as £45 Canaries good, but kinder to your Official pocket. If you must buy something new, invest in something you can wear again, or just mix and match with a new jacket and shoes.

10

Accessorise with stunning jewellery, scarves, shoes and bags. But the key to success here is balance and scale. Don’t match hat, shoes and bag, just two of the three, or you‘ll look like a set.

TYs? E I R A V E C A R B EM it yourself to just one pair of glasse Why lim

Whenever I get together with fellow opticians the topic always turns to them lamenting why it is that people have multiple pairs of shoes, lots of different clothes but only one pair of glasses? This is when I take a deep breath, count to ten and resist the urge to shout “it’s your own fault!” Opticians in the UK have made buying glasses inextricably linked to having your eyes tested, for most people that will be every two years. We’ll even go as far as putting you off having new glasses if you don’t have a change of prescription. This then turns the purchase into a need rather than a want. Who wouldn’t want lots of different glasses, bright ones, subtle ones and even blingy! It can’t be the cost to the consumer that’s

the problem, my boutique opticians is opposite John Lewis so we see lots of ladies buying handbags, shoes and clothes, we see fellas carrying suit bags from the top men’s shops that cost double what a great pair of glasses cost. So when we opened Oculus it gave me a chance to do things differently. We love browsers, we really enjoy people coming in and trying on our frames. Even if you don’t buy new glasses, if you have enjoyed the experience you will come back another day, that’s how life works. The price you are quoted includes the thinnest material for your prescription, we won’t let someone pick a frame only to find the finished pair of glasses being ruined by ugly lenses. We stock different brands and we take pride in having frames that you can’t get elsewhere! Next time you are in the city, please do pop in and see us, our tea and coffee is pretty good too! “With the hope that the holidays will be filled with plenty of family memories it can soon become a stressful time for the whole family!”

How can I manage summer holiday childcare? MY QUESTION: I am worried about how I will manage childcare over the summer holidays, especially as a separated family. There is so much to think about and organise, how I am going to entertain my children for six weeks? Who is going to have the children and when? How am I going to afford it all? How am I going to be able to go to work and look after the children?

A

T A TIME THAT should be exciting, especially for your children, the two words ‘school holidays’ can be enough to terrify any parent! With the hope that the holidays will be filled with plenty of family memories it can soon become a stressful time for the whole family. As a separated parent with

36

children, it becomes even more difficult as there is a lot more to consider. It becomes a time which is out of routine and a change to term time contact arrangements. Due to this change in routine, there needs to be agreement between both parents which can often lead to disagreements. So, how can you avoid this?

1. PLAN AHEAD

Planning is essential and it is something that is best done together. For many this seems like an impossible task but the more that you consult with one another, the easier it should make it. Agreeing a minimum notice period can be helpful, especially if you or your expartner is hoping to take the children abroad. The other parent needs to give permission before trips such as a holiday. The alternative being that a court order is undertaken before you can take a child abroad. Vanilla June/July 2018

REAL LIVES and the distance between the parents’ homes. Make sure you consider these before planning for the summer holidays. The better prepared you are, the more that you will be able to enjoy your time with the children.

“Don’t be competitive with your partner. Do things your children would like to do and put them first” 2. BE FLEXIBLE AND COOPERATE

Find an easy way for you both to communicate, whether that is in person, on the phone, through a family mediator or a friend or family member being present. From time to time, review the arrangements and adjust as needed. The summer holidays are a long period of time and it is likely that plans may change. By reviewing arrangements it will make you more prepared and help alleviate any issues that may arise. 3. BE REALISTIC

Be realistic about your own schedule and commitments. Don’t be competitive with your partner on what each of you can do and provide for your children, as this could lead to disappointment for the children. Do things your children would like to do and put them first. 4. CHOOSE AN ARRANGEMENT THAT ACCOMMODATES YOUR CHILDREN'S AGES, ACTIVITIES AND NEEDS

When deciding on arrangements, you’ll want to take June/July 2018 Vanilla

STILL STRUGGLING TO AGREE?

the following into consideration: 1. Your children’s ages and personalities 2. Your family schedule 3. The career and social commitments of each parent 4. The academic and extracurricular activities to which your children are committed 5. Your child-care arrangements

Do not worry, finding that you cannot agree over holiday arrangements is very common – nearly half of separated parents disagree about holiday arrangements. If you think this is likely to happen in your situation, it is best to take legal advice sooner rather than later so that arrangements can hopefully be agreed in good time and everyone, including the children, knows what is going to happen. ■

n SUV is the “must have” form of transport – if you get the right one! With the ŠKODA Karoq, the practicality, quality and sheer brilliance of the design put this vehicle straight to the top of the class. The interior is really impressive with lovely soft-to-the-touch materials atop the dash, leather upholstery and switch gear. The dash is dominated by the infotainment screen; even this has a look of quality about it. The menu for the functions are intuitive but additionally there is the super-cool feature of gesture control, so one can now select with a wave of the hand! The interior is very spacious. There is plenty of leg and head room, even for the tallest of us. As expected, the steering wheel adjusts for height and reach and with electrically adjustable, heated seats with adjustable lumbar support, getting anyone

Best of all though, the seats have a memory function, so after Cousin Hermione has borrowed the Karoq, one can return to the saved settings like magic! ŠKODA’s VarioFlex adjustments allows the three rear seats to be moved individually fore and aft, reclined or removed completely providing fabulous flexibility and the possibility of using the huge potential space to transport the more bulky bits of tack, sports kit or furniture after a trip to the local “Brocante”. On the subject of practicality, ŠKODA has really thought through storage requirements and come up with a large glove locker with

the ability to cool drinks and the like, with door pockets big enough to hold sizeable drinks bottles. In front of the gear lever is a charging pad for a smart phone and the infotainment system accommodates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. My favourite practical feature is the boot opening with a flick of the foot! Out on the road the Karoq is easy to live with, with fine driving credentials combining secure handling and comfort. In the city a rear camera makes parking easy. The four-wheel drive system has been well proven and in situations far more extreme than pulling the horsebox off the meadow puts many “off-roaders” to shame. There’s insufficient space here to list all the features, safety and driver aids in this short review but the list is truly extensive! All in all, the ŠKODA Karoq is a very impressive vehicle which can go virtually anywhere and ticks all the boxes! ■ robinsonsmotorgroup.co.uk/skoda

LEISURE

...this summer and enjoy vibrant evenings in Norwich!

L

AUNCHING on Thursday 5 July, the Head Out, Not Home summer events programme – organised by Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) – will once again enliven Norwich city centre with a burst of music and entertainment. Every Thursday evening for 10 weeks (weather dependent) from 16:40 – 20:00 there will be something for the entire family to enjoy. Covent Garden entertainers will bring a circus theme to proceedings in recognition of the 250th anniversary of when the first circus was performed in 1768. Norwich has direct links to circus: Pablo Fanque was born in Norwich in 1810, and became the first recorded nonwhite British owner of a popular circus in Victorian Britain. Look out for a blue plaque in his honour on the side of John Lewis. Under a canopy of blue sky and warm rays of sunshine (we can hope!), enjoy a relaxed

44

summer festival vibe and start the weekend early by heading to Gentlemans Walk, St Gregory’s Green, Westlegate, All Saints Green, London Street and Norwich Arts Centre front lawn for vibrant music and entertainment.

G

RAB family and friends for a fun evening in Norwich. As you explore the city, taking in live music and entertainment, why not indulge in a spot of late night shopping, enjoy a delicious bite to eat or stop for a refreshing drink in one of Norwich’s many bars? Or bring a picnic and take it easy at one of our event spaces. Whilst in the city remember to look up and around – you

may just spot some interesting pieces of art. There are currently 7 murals to be discovered, all brightening up dull walls… how many will you find on your next visit to the city? l Stay up to date, and don’t miss a thing! The full schedule (to be announced very soon) will be available via the Norwich Evenings Facebook Page, the free to download VisitNorwich app or alternatively visit: www.norwichbid.co.uk.

BEAUTY

EXFOLIATION: QUESTIONS ANSWERED

illaT Owner and surgeon at Norwich Cosmetic Clinic, Bijan Beigi Van REPOR answers your questions about exfoliation. WHAT EXACTLY IS EXFOLIATION?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, so you are left with a layer of newer, fresher skin cells on the surface of your skin. WHAT DOES IT DO?

Old skin cells can look dull and lifeless. Exfoliating leaves a new layer of skin, which will look fresh, renewed, and radiant. Furthermore, exfoliating can clear your pores of dirt and grease more effectively than cleansing, which can help achieve a clearer complexion. DO I NEED TO DO IT EVERY DAY?

Exfoliating should be part of your skin care routine but you can overexfoliate as too much scrubbing can cause irritation, especially on more sensitive skin. Here at the clinic we have our own Diamond Exfoliator, which we recommend for use two or three times a week, but you must choose a product which is right for your skin. WHAT PROFESSIONAL EXFOLIATION TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

There are a lot of treatments available depending on the level of exfoliation you are hoping to achieve. Here at the clinic we offer everything from laser resurfacing and chemical peels, which can achieve dramatic results but do require some down time, to microdermabrasion, which is a smooth a gentle exfoliation and can do done in your lunch break. Dermaplaning

IS THERE A TREATMENT WHICH YOU PREFER?

We are excited to have recently introduced Dermaplaning at the clinic. It has been widely reported in the media as “the new way to exfoliate your face” and we are currently one of the only clinics in Norfolk with trained skin care practitioners who can offer this treatment. HOW DOES DERMAPLANING DIFFER FROM OTHER EXFOLIATION TREATMENTS?

The procedure uses a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair (aka peach fuzz), after which an enzyme peel, is applied. The whole process reveals a fresh and rejuvenated skin surface, perfect for make-up application. It is an entirely safe and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure requiring little or no downtime after the treatment.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

I would always begin by speaking to our skin care practitioners. They are all highly trained and will only recommend products and treatments which are right for you and your skin. ■

MICROBLADED BROWS at Gianna Zagni Hair & Beauty

A

LSO KNOWN as eyebrow embroidery, feathering or etching, microblading is a semi-permanent make-up procedure that has become massively popular recently and is perfect for those who want to reconstruct, define, cover gaps or fill-in over plucked brows. Microblading is also the perfect treatment for women who prefer a more natural look to the heavier, more blocked effect that has been trending. The pigment is applied into the surface layer of the dermis using

sterilised tools, which allows the practitioner to create a naturallooking brow with ultra-fine micro lines that look like individual hairs. It’s a meticulous process that takes nearly two hours to complete but the results should last for 6-18 months. The first and most important part of the process is establishing the ideal shape of the brow – one that both balances the face and that the client is happy with. Gianna at Gianna Zagni, in

ICROBLADING ‘etches’ the chosen pigment into the skin, to give the appearance of hair. The skin surface is slightly broken, but surprisingly, there is no downtime to this treatment. Afterwards, Gianna gives her clients some balm to put on their brows over the coming days and tells them to avoid getting them wet for seven days. This helps to prevent the skin from peeling and to protect the brows so the skin can repair quickly. Gianna tells us microblading really is the “big thing” in beauty treatments at the moment and can barely keep up with the demand for bookings. We can see why! WELLBEING

Dare to bare HOW DO YOU GET A BODY THAT’S FIT TO FLAUNT?

I

t’s the bane of many women’s lives – those lumpy, orange peel like dimples that make themselves at home on our thighs and bottoms. In other words... CELLULITE! But there are ways to minimise their appearance through a combination of healthy eating, exercise, body care and creams. That said, it’s important to remember that cellulite affects around 85% of women and it’s nothing to be ashamed of! But there are easy ways to help minimise the appearance of cellulite.

DRY BRUSH YOUR BODY In essence, dry brushing is a combination of exfoliation and massage that involves taking a dry brush and moving it over your body in slow, circular motions two to three times a week. ● The firm bristles of the brush give your skin a thorough exfoliation, while the pressure helps to stimulate your circulation and lymphatic drainage, which can help the body eliminate the toxins which can contribute to cellulite.

54

● It’s best to do this before you shower, for about three to five minutes. ● But be gentle, don’t press too hard and definitely no scrubbing. You’re aiming for gentle exfoliation! RELAX YOUR MIND & SOUL We’re often guilty of rushing around like crazy, without ever finding time to relax and unwind. But that kind of lifestyle can lead to our bodies becoming super unhealthy. When we feel stressed, we produce cortisol and this chemical is pumped around our body. In addition to causing a host of other problems, cortisol can actually encourage our bodies to store fat. And as more fat accumulates, so can the appearance of cellulite. Yoga can help reduce stress and moving from pose to pose can help increase circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. EMBRACE HEALTHY EATING While cellulite can target anyone, whatever their weight, it makes sense to opt for a healthy diet. ● Increase fruit and vegetable intake, especially blueberries,

strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries. ● Reduce simple, processed carbs which can cause high blood insulin levels and promote fat formation. ● Instead, choose small amounts of whole grain low GI carbs such as multi-grain bread, sweet potato and legumes to help stabilise blood sugars and insulin levels. ● Include healthy fats. Replace saturated fats with healthy omega-3 fats such as oily fish, flaxseed, fish oils and nuts. UP YOUR EXERCISE GAME ● Find a sport or class you absolutely love and find the time to get involved. ● Firming the muscle underneath the cellulite will help smooth the skin’s appearance. ● Focus on strength-training moves that build up hamstrings, quads, buttocks, and hips. ● Aim for training the lower body at least twice a week, increasing the weight over time to challenge your muscles. ● Interval training – which involves varying the intensity of your activity – is a great way to burn body fat. ■

Adrian’s son Sam Humphries says: “Alfie & George offers younger customers the same superb quality handmade kitchens, but they are available to buy online, assembled, primed and coated, which they can fit themselves. And we can ship anywhere in the UK. “With no fitting charge, this cuts the overall cost of a kitchen by half – we are often cheaper than B&Q. We named the business after my grandfathers and I believe Alfie & George will be a huge success because, like them, it is solid, nononsense and completely reliable.” The Annex also specialises in one-off furniture and accessories, and these are mostly sourced from Eastern Europe and France. Adrian says: “We have an eclectic mix of fascinating and unique pieces, such as butchers’ blocks, clocks, farmhouse tables

and battered leather sofas. Nothing is off the peg, it’s all original, and designed to add a bit of flair to our bespoke kitchens.” So what sort of kitchens do people want these days, what’s in and upcoming? “Shaker style is still our biggest seller, clean lines and simple design,” Adrian says. “But people are getting braver with colour, and we are seeing darker greys, bold reds, Scandinavian blue and yellow, and even aubergine. Retro is big! Copper and zinc work surfaces are proving very popular too, so we are working with some great materials to create the kitchens of the future.” ■ For more details go to www.handmadekitchensnorfolk.co.uk or call 01603 628080

Create the Summer Living Look

H

ouseplants and botanical themes have been gaining popularity in interior design over the last couple of years and brighter colours are being seen more and more. The last few collections have seen lots of bright, fun prints with foliage or animals on them and the colour palettes have been strong – greens, reds and oranges, counterbalanced with some pastel tones. These leafy prints and nature-inspired patterns can help bring a freshness into your home and create a summer feel all year round, whilst the exotic, jungle-inspired designs bring energy to a room. The new collection from Baker Lifestyle is the aptly named Carnival and is packed with a mix of ethnic, exotic and botanical prints as well as as textured plains in strong natural shades. A multi coloured fabric will allow you to pick and choose a couple of colours to work with – for instance use one colour for some fun kitchen chairs or as new cushions on an existing sofa. Or pair a neutral backdrop with a large scale botanical print and don’t be frightened to use contrasting geometric patterns on an occasional chair to create a more eclectic, well-travelled look. ‘Orinoco’ from the Carnival collection teamed with ‘Carnival Chevron’ is perfect for this. Obviously, you can add the real thing – succulents and houseplants – to the scheme to really create an inside garden feel and if they don’t survive at least the curtains will!

TIPS FOR THE SUMMER

From Fiona at Norwich Sunblinds TIP NUMBER 1: PERFECT FIT BLINDS It’s that time of year again – the doors are open to make the most of the warmer weather, and if you have a conservatory or garden room – those rooms where shade is especially important – you may find yourself moving your blinds backwards and forwards as you go in and out or as you open and shut the door or windows. If “flapping blinds” is a problem, take a look at perfect fit blinds. These blinds fit to UPVC windows and are enclosed in a neat frame, so that the blinds move with the window or door. These are fantastic in any room in the house but are especially useful for bi-fold doors and conservatories. They are childsafe and are available as roller, venetian or pleated blinds.

TIP NUMBER 2: BLACKOUT BLINDS Blackout curtains or blinds work well for blocking light and have the added advantage that they help to keep heat in during the colder winter months. If you think blackout blinds are boring, think again. Advances in technology now mean that these blinds are available in decorative fabrics. Rich colours and textures look sensational, especially with Louvolite’s luxurious Chenille, shot silk and satin ranges. Vision blinds offer an alternative option. Cutting edge blinds alternate mesh paneling, which can filter light, with solid fabric, which can be lowered to block out the light completely. TIP NUMBER 3: SOLAR PROTECTIVE COATING Some of the best performing fabrics have a solar protective coating that reflects the heat and light. Louvolite’s Solar Protective Coating (SPC) lets in natural light whilst reducing solar gain. Look out for fabrics that have this protective coating. TIP NUMBER 4: FLY SCREENS Fly screens can be custom made to fit your doors and windows to stop the creepy crawlies coming in – useful at this time of year when windows are kept open.

PERFECT PLANTINGS

M

IKE READ, formally of Loxley Hall Gardens has over 30 years of experience in the garden landscape trade. He has taken his passion and in-depth knowledge of planting design and condensed them into Perfect Plantings, a business that specialises in bespoke designs for garden borders and providing full colour layout plans, supply of all plants, materials and installation. Mike concentrates on high quality planting design and installation, along with the maintenance, irrigation and aftercare for your projects. Along with his team he also carries out quality landscaping work such as paving, decking, artificial lawns, timberwork etc, with a lot of experience in the popular contemporary style. “Our planting schemes are designed purely to individual requirements, so each one is totally bespoke. We focus on year-round colour and interest, and strive to create low maintenance aspects throughout,” explains Mike. Stunning plant combinations are achieved by using a blend of practical design skills and the experienced horticultural knowledge required to produce a plan layout that has a good balance of structure and an ever changing palette of flower and foliage colour allyear round. “Through 30 years in the landscape trade I've won four Gold Medals for show borders at the

Royal Norfolk Show, plus silver medals at the Sandringham Flower Show and Gardeners’ World Live. Running a plant nursery for five years has given me an invaluable knowledge of the best plants for any situation in your garden.”

FTER an initial discussion about your garden, MIke then arranges a site visit and will survey the area taking measurements and photos, discussing the various styles available and suitability for your plot. All aspects of sun and shade are taken note of, enabling him to choose the correct plants for you. Planting plans are prepared, in detailed colour, showing border layouts, individual plants and their spacings, along with selections of

photos showing key plants to be used, a fully inclusive quotation for the preparation, supply of plants and the planting of the areas is supplied. The Perfect Planting team source and supply all the plants and materials required for the job, carrying out the preparation work, including any soil improvement or clearance of old shrubs etc that is required. They then set about planting up your garden, irrigating thoroughly once complete. If you require any advice on any horticultural, garden design or construction matters do not hesitate to contact Mike. ■ For more info, go to www.perfectplantings.co.uk or call 0845 6430921.

Yes Chef!

Beetroot & Goat’s Curd SERVES 8

1 litre of goat’s milk 1 tbsp rennet 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 bunch of golden baby beetroot 1 bunch of candied baby beetroot 4 large red beetroot 300ml white wine vinegar 235g caster sugar 1 small Handful juniper berries 1 bunch of spring onions 150g fresh peas podded

1 Heat the goats milk on the stove in a large pan until it reaches 32˚C. Remove and stir in the rennet and lemon juice. Cool and then refrigerate for 2½ hours for the curd to set. 2 Meanwhile clean all the beetroots under a cold running tap. Steam the large red beetroots for 25 minutes or until cooked through and boil the baby beets for 14 minutes. When all the beetroots are cooked, run under a cold tap for five minutes to chill and prevent over cooking. Leave them to soak in cold water for 30 minutes to enable the skins to come away easily. 3 Quarter the baby beets and place into sterilised kilner jars. Run the large red beetroots

74

through a mandolin to get thin even slices. Place the white wine vinegar, 200ml of water, the juniper berries and the sugar into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Once boiled remove from the heat and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Pour into the kilner jars completely covering the baby beetroots. Thinly slice the spring onions. 4 After 2½ hours the curd should have separated from the whey. At this point pass the mixture through a sieve lined with muslin so you will be left with the curd. This will take a little bit of time so leave the sieve and curd in the fridge to drain for approximately 1 hour. 5 Place the drained curd into

a bowl with a generous pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper. 6 To construct the dish place eight thinly sliced beetroot circle onto the plate forming a circle, on top of this sit 6 pickled beetroot quarters, three of each colour. Use a tea spoon and delicately place 5 half teaspoons of curd on top of the red beetroot. Sprinkle over the fresh peas and spring onions on top to garnish and bring a bit of freshness to the dish. Garnish with pea shoots and red veined sorrel. Strattons Hotel, 4 Ash Close, Swaffham PE37 7NH Tel: 01760 723845 www.strattonshotel.com

POILER ALERT – Number Twenty Four, in Wymondham, is everything you would expect from an award-winning restaurant, and much more! Dining there on a Friday evening, we were immediately welcomed into a relaxed, end-of-the-week buzz and a full house of diners of all ages, from seniors to young couples. The menu is simple but perfectly balanced, with just five starters and five mains. But each dish has been painstakingly thought through and there is something to tempt every palate. My fellow diner started with rillette of salt beef brisket, flavoured with grain mustard, roasted onion chutney, chard and beetroot salad. this wholesome, earthy and simple dish reminded him of his childhood, the way salt beef used to taste, with a bold flavour and superb texture.

76

My Cromer crab and smoked salmon, avocado and rocket salad, with sweet chilli dressing was the perfect choice for a fish lover, with delicate smoked salmon and tender crab, and a sweet and piquant dressing to bring it all together. Delicious! Mains were equally mouthwatering. My dining companion opted for the roasted rump of lamb with boxty potatoes (a delicious take on bubble and squeak with smoked bacon), piquant red cabbage, and red wine port sauce. He loved the generous portion of melt-in-the-mouth lamb, cooked perfectly as ordered, and the lovely contrasting flavours of the dish. Tempted again by the fish, my fillet of sea bass on Sauternes velouté with crayfish and spring onion was wonderfully good. A generous two fillets of fish, with a sweet wine and vodka sauce, scattered with pretty pink crayfish and some lovely creamy mash. We were also brought some crisp, fresh seasonal vegetables. Again, five desserts, but such a good range of sweet, refreshing, and just plain indulgent. Compelled to try the latter, my

partner didn’t hesitate to order the dark chocolate whisky mousse cake with morello cherries and honeycomb ice cream. It was every bit as delicious as he wanted it to be, a perfect mix of rich mousse, with boozy cherries and a sticky crunch from the ice cream. My tangy citrus pavlova topped with coconut ice cream and brandy snap was a lighter dessert, but zingy, fruity and cool all at the same time. And who doesn’t love a snappy brandy snap?! A faultless meal on every count and beautifully presented. Chef owner, Jonathan, is a genius and deserves his excellent reputation. He is backed up by his wife, Isobel, and great staff. They are a joy; polite, interested, well informed and the customer is always their first priority. I will remember Number 24 for a long time to come. REVIEWER: LUCY OHSTEN

Here’s to a new look for Earlham Arms

T

HE EARLHAM ARMS has been a popular place for drinking and dining in Norwich for generations. But the new owners on board have decided to raise the pub’s game and bring it up to date with a modern, chic new look, a mouthwatering all-day menu and much more. Co-owner Mark Phillips says: “The pub is a fantastic spot, but we know it can achieve so much more. It needs to be brought into the 21st Century, so we have undergone a pretty radical rebrand to maximise what we can do and offer customers so much more. “Firstly we have changed our name to The Earlham Norwich, and created a new branding and logo. As part of this we have redecorated the pub in a new colour scheme of greys, black, orange and white, which looks superb. So visually we are bang up to date, fresh and stylish. “Food is a big draw for us, so we have created a fantastic new menu that is available all day, starting with breakfast at 9am until last orders at 9.30pm. And we are now one of the few places in the city that does a roast until 8pm on Sundays. “We have also appointed a new chef, Keane Chowler, who is young, ambitious and very creative. He has developed a delicious menu focusing on the finest local produce. All our food is made fresh to order on site,

78

and includes classics such as beer battered fish and chips, home cooked pies, stylish burgers and tapas. We also cater for vegetarians and vegans, so there is something for everyone. “With summer just around the corner we are also a great venue for live music, not big bands, but smaller groups that are great to listen to when you are drinking or eating. We have a beautiful outdoor space, a classic beer garden, with plenty of room for families. It’s a real sun trap and we expect it to be a popular place to chill out on a hot sunny day. “For people wanting to just pop in for a coffee we have a very good range of coffees. And I always like something sweet to go with my hot beverage, so we have introduced

a range of Costa-style cakes and pastries to go with them.” The new Earlham Norwich looks like the place to be this summer. Why not go along and see for yourself? ■

T

HE AWARD-WINNING Brasserie at Barnham Broom is a large modern, stylish space with stunning views over the golf course, and a menu that offers diners a real taste of the very best of local, seasonal Norfolk produce. The cuisine is contemporary, elegant and imaginative – modern English with a French twist! Starters range from baked king scallops wrapped in pancetta, roasted pigeon breast, salmon gravlax, and whipped goat’s cheese with pickled beetroot. I began with a seafood platter, billed as for two to share, but the chef was more than happy to create the dish just for me. It was a gorgeous work of art, a real show stopper. For my companion, a coarse game terrine, with tomato and pear chutney, shallot and hazelnut vinaigrette and toasted brioche. The dish was meaty, moist and full of flavour, and the addition of pear in the chutney was a perfect foil for the terrine.

82

The wine list here is extensive and we chose a pinot noir for our meal, which was light, very drinkable and complemented every dish. Mains include a range of game, fish, steak and burgers from the grill, and some nice veggie options too. My partner and I both chose from the daily specials. For me the ‘catch of the day’ was a generous fillet of moist oven baked salmon. My fellow diner’s ‘cut of the day’ was thick medallions of Suffolk pork fillet wrapped in pancetta on a bed of new potatoes (instead of the creamy mash on the menu), ratatouille, steamed spinach and a rich red wine jus. He described the pork as just as it should be; full of flavour, tender, but with a bit of bite. The ratatouille was fresh and not overpowering, and the spinach was the perfect accompaniment. Desserts include marsala baked plums, bread and butter pudding, spice apple mille feuille, ice creams and a great looking cheese board. My partner loved his bitter

chocolate tart, blackcurrant and cream ice cream (instead of the rum and raisin on the menu) and a chocolate sauce. A really good looking dish; with buttery pastry and the perfect balance of bitter and sweet chocolate. The ice cream was tart, creamy and very moreish. The Brasserie at Barnham Broom isn’t just somewhere for hotel guests to eat, it’s a destination restaurant in its own right. The food is superb, elegant, creative and the welcome and service we received were second to none. Highly recommended for fine dining in beautiful surroundings. REVIEWER: LUCY OHSTEN

DUMENIL NV BRUT PREMIER CRU £29.50

It is my specialist subject, having spent a fair bit of time in the region, enjoying the food and wine. Also having to drink Champagne at every meal and squeeze in tastings during the mornings and afternoons, too. It was a tough job but someone had to do it!! I was spoilt. I am the UK agent for a small family run “House” called Dumenil. I remember them years ago based in the Montagne de Reims – barely mountains, more a range of lowish hills between Reims and Epernay. They make a superb Champagne from the three ‘legal’ grape varieties, namely: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The nonvintage Brut is made from a third of each of the grapes. Good small bubbles race up the flute, the wine is a pale yellow. Aromas of biscuit and brioche abound. The taste is a light dry wine, a little sugar is added after fermentation which just gives it a little softness in the initial taste. They make a full range and I will write about them all at some point. For a perfect wine which can be drunk anytime the Dumenil N/V Brut Premier Cru sells at £29.50 per bottle. Spoil yourself!

Steve Hearndon Tastebuds Wines

My City Life

of the wines are unique to Tastebuds and cannot be purchased through supermarkets or online. In many cases we are the main UK agent. l I go and taste all the wines I import and I know the wine makers l I have continuity of wines, just vintages change l I host tutored wine tasting (and dinners) l I manage corporate and personal gifts for clients l I write in this magazine!

Steve was born in the East End of London but lived his early years in North West London and Harrow, Middlesex. He moved to Norfolk 20 years ago. Steve studied hotel and catering at college and worked in the industry in London before embarking on an academic career, lasting nearly 30 years. Tastebuds Wines started 18 years ago and is now run as a shop/warehouse in Strumpshaw.

How did you first get involved in the wine trade? During my time working in the hotel and catering industry I was distantly involved with wine! I gained my diploma from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and then lectured on wine and gastronomy. I used to take students on field trips to France, spending one week in Champagne and the second in another wine region. Students did work experience in local hotels and restaurants as well as learning about wine.

Do you have a favourite wine? I do not have a favourite wine, as such, as much depends on the various external factors like where I am, who I am with and

What do you think is Norwich’s jewel in the crown?

the general circumstances but I would always prefer to drink Champagne. Preferably old and made with a majority of Pinot Noir.

Is there any tipple you’ve never tried but would love to? No, I think I have tried everything I wish to try!

Tell us about Tastebuds. What makes it different from other wine shops? The most important thing to say is Tastebuds Wines imports from France, Portugal and Spain. All

Norwich has such diversity of all aspects of life – I think the modern terminology is that “it is a cool place” to be.

Where is your favourite place to eat out? I rarely eat out in the city – I prefer to visit country eateries. My current favourite is The Kings Arms in Fleggburgh – only nine miles from Norwich. The food is outstanding and it also has 5* accommodation and a good wine list which I hope to improve! For more details on what Tastebuds Wine can offer visit www.tastebudswines.co.uk
