LETTER FROM THE EDITOR BEHIND THE SCENES

It’s time again for us to take a deep dive into the weird and wonderful world of wellness and cannabis.

In this issue we searched far and wide to find the most outlandish and engaging stories from around the globe, covering everything from 3D-printed vegan meats to the world’s biggest pot-brownie. We even looked at how your chances of finding love stack up against the odds of us encountering any extraterrestrial neighbours in the milky way – see our story ‘Love long and prosper’ for more on this.

With an increased focus on sustainability and what we can do to combat the growing climate crisis, we also paid particular attention to eco-conscious stories.

Looking at how you can make your home more energy efficient, impressive sustainable architecture and the latest materials taking the fashion world by storm, we explored how people around the world are trying to live a little greener.

Not to mention our story ‘The unbeleafable power of houseplants’ which highlights some of the most homebrightening flora that even those serial plant killers should be able to care for.

It really felt like time to take rolling papers to the next level. So at ROOR, they got together and decided to crack the complex challenge of how to get CBD to bond with gum, and thrillingly, three new first-of-their-kind rolling papers with CBD-infused, natural gum now exist!

On top of this innovation, these rolling papers stand out because of their build quality. The gum is vegan and made from acacia, and the papers are GMO free and contain no chalk, dyes, additives, chlorine, or bleaching agents.

These ground-breaking new papers also have a really bold visual identity: each of the three new lines comes in a neon colour, with disruptive graphics which showcase the dynamism of the alternative CBD industry.

Eye catching and boundary pushing, orange represents the UNBLEACHED papers. These are papers made from trees from a sustainably sourced eco-system. Their unbleached wood fibres give them a distinctive light-brown tint, while making them soft, ultra thin and slow burning.

Next comes green, ORGANIC HEMP. The papers are a natural beige colour and ultra thin.

The hemp, one of the strongest and most durable materials, is 100% organic and grown and produced in France. This strength means the papers have a solid feel in the hand and don’t tear easily. They’re also slow burning.

The final new entrants to the ROOR family are the papers in the vivid yellow booklet, RICE, aptly enough, made from rice paper, developed through cutting-edge science. Other so-called rice rolling papers available on the market often don’t actually contain rice fibres, but ROOR’s are completely legitimate. They’re made from the part of rice that is normally discarded and also contain hemp fibres for resistance and silkiness.

But rolling papers are not the only thing ROOR has to offer. In order to elevate the experience of its community, ROOR has launched The High Gallery, a patronage project on Instagram, designed to inspire with brilliant creative work from different fields. The artists involved are presented as ‘Highers’. Visit our magazine on: roorpapers.com

PROVIDING THE RIGHT CBD TREATMENTS AT THE RIGHT TIME

Here, Farmer & Chemist co-founder Dr. Jeffery D. Dunn talks about his inspiration to help people undertstand how CBD can improve people’s lives and augment traditional therapies.

Dr. Dunn, who earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Utah, has worked in the industry his entire life and is committed to advancing the appropriate use and study of CBD for the benefit of patients.

13
“We want to be the trusted source for CBD as we have further partnered with experienced leaders in the medical, legal and marketing fields.”

WHAT SPURRED YOUR INTEREST IN PHARMACOLOGY AND THE SURROUNDING INDUSTRY?

I grew up in pharmacy – my grandfather and father are pharmacists. I have always been drawn to medicine and how it can help people. My business partner, Doug Burgoyne, is also a pharmacist.

Medical cannabis’ approval, and subsequent CBD legalisation, provided an opportunity for us to learn more and see how it could augment traditional therapies.

WHEN DID YOU START TO RESEARCH THE BENEFITS OF CBD AND OTHER CANNABINOIDS?

It started about four to five years ago when CBD was legalised and began to be studied.

It seemed like an intriguing alternative or augmentation to pain medications like opioids, sleep medications, anti-anxiety medications, etc., that have some misuse and abuse potential.

As science has focused on different cannabinoids it has been interesting to learn about how they work and what could be their therapeutic role.

It continues to be a fascinating, evolving space.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR FARMER & CHEMIST?

We noticed a lack of transparency, education and guidelines surrounding cannabis and CBD.

As health care providers we noticed a huge unmet need to provide purer, high-potency products from pharmacists – people that customers could trust to educate them about uses, side effects, drug interactions, costs, etc.

We want to be the trusted source for CBD as we have further partnered with experienced leaders in the medical, legal, and marketing fields.

YOU ARE CLEARLY HIGHLY QUALIFIED IN THIS AREA; DID YOUR SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE COME IN HANDY WHEN STARTING THE BUSINESS?

Absolutely. The success of Farmer & Chemist is grounded in the people we work with –pharmacists and chemists who can provide customers all the necessary information from trusted professionals to make the best choice of therapy.

CBD is very effective and safe, but we feel people should still consult their pharmacists and physicians about how to use it and what to watch for.

WHAT SETS FARMER & CHEMIST APART FROM YOUR COMPETITORS?

Firstly, it is the potency of our products, we have higher concentrations of CBD and other cannabinoids than many competitor products which can contain little to no CBD – at least not therapeutic dosages.

The range of formulations we provide, access to education from pharmacists and overall high quality (all our products come with a Certificate of Analysis) also sets us apart.

Our customers can feel confident that they are getting the best products and that they will work.

14

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING AND STAND OUT MOMENTS SINCE YOU CO-FOUNDED FARMER & CHEMIST?

Seeing relief on customers’ faces when they try a CBD product that actually works for them. I have seen amazing results with my mother who has Rheumatoid Arthritis and nothing is more rewarding than that.

It’s not like our pharmacy days… nobody ever thanked us for lowering their cholesterol. But at Farmer & Chemist, they try it and love the result. It’s very gratifying and never gets old.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE HAD AND HOW DID YOU USE YOUR EXPERTISE AND INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE TO OVERCOME THEM?

Confusion about quality and lack of industry guidance are our biggest challenges but this also provides the biggest opportunity since we take the time to teach people about formulation, dosing, route of administration, etc. We hope that word of mouth will spread the best message.

I SEE FARMER & CHEMIST HAS THE ‘YOU, ME & CBD’ PODCAST, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THIS AND DO YOU FIND HAVING INFORMATIVE AUDIO CONTENT HELPS YOU INTERACT WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS MORE EASILY?

The podcast sprang up as a fun way to educate people about CBD in brief, and hopefully entertaining, segments.

We talk about what CBD is, and what it is not, how it could be used and when people should be careful using it.

We hope that it is viewed as a good resource from educated and trained people.

HAS FARMER & CHEMIST GOT ANYTHING IN THE PIPELINE AND CAN CONSUMERS EXPECT ANY UPCOMING PRODUCT RELEASES OR NEW VENTURES?

We have very cool stuff coming including new cannabinoids and new formulations, but we don’t want to spoil the surprises too early.

WHICH FARMER & CHEMIST PRODUCTS ARE MOST PROUD OF AND ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR FAVOURITES AMONGST CUSTOMERS?

We love our Problem Salved (salve), Yummy Gummies, and Steady Going (tincture).

Not all of these are available for sale outside of the US, but our topical products are the best we have seen in the marketplace and our customers agree.

Our customers tell us that when they use Problem Salved for the first time, the pain from arthritis or other swelling is almost immediately relieved (because we have enough CBD in the Salve to be effective).

Proud of its past while looking towards the future

This family-owned company is proud of its British engineering roots and of how far it has progressed and evolved over 46 years.

It employs an international team of talented engineers who develop, design and build complex production lines for clients around the world.

Oxford-based CapCoder was founded by chairman Lou Bates in 1976 with the intention of achieving nothing short of the very best for his customers.

And although the company has seen many changes over the years, it has always remained true to that original core belief.

The machines and production-processes have evolved over time and CapCoder now supplies some of the world’s largest production lines in a range of industries including vape and CBD,

pharmaceuticals, food and drink and fast-moving consumer goods.

CapCoder machines power production lines for international brands such as gsk, Boots and Estée Lauder, as well as hundreds of smaller and medium-sized firms around the world.

But whether the client is big or small, the service provided and the attention to detail remains the same.

CapCoder is now led by Managing Director Ross Prior who took over from grandfather Lou in 2016 and is proud to continue the same traditions which have served the company so well over the decades.

Ross has transformed CapCoder over the last five years to becoming a more technologically-focused company which allows the team to take on bigger and bolder projects than ever before.

The company has heavily invested in people and machinery, fulfilling its objective to constantly evolve to stay competitive and relevant.

The team pride themselves in solving problems for clients and gain real satisfaction from helping companies grow and realise their full potential.

The recent coronavirus pandemic demonstrated just how adaptable CapCoder can be.

It modified around 100 of its existing machines to produce COVID test kits and had 3D printers running 24 hours a day, seven days a week to produce components for face shields used by police and ambulance services.

At the height of the pandemic, CapCoder had

These days, it is easy to forget that Britain has a long and proud manufacturing history, stretching all the way back to the Industrial Revolution.

around half of its output devoted to COVID-related projects and the team were happy to produce equipment for frontline emergency workers free of charge.

Coming out of this post-COVID world, CapCoder has identified a real uptick in the rest of the business operations, predominantly in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries that have bounced back massively.

CBD sector

For many years the team has made a wide range of systems for vaping and e-liquid companies, and many machines in that range can now be utilised in the fast-growing CBD sector.

CapCoder has everything a CBD company of any size could ask for. It can provide anything from £30,000 semi-automatic machines for hemp production farms to full pharmaceutical production size machines costing anywhere up to six-figure sums.

What’s next for CapCoder?

CapCoder is now actively looking for a larger premises to operate its business, as demand has risen so high that there is no longer enough space.

The company can produce the very largest machines which are capable of the most complex and demanding production lines but that is only half the story.

It is increasingly investing in ‘Micro Mono’ machines which can fit in small spaces and are used extensively in the vape and life sciences sectors.

The CapCoder team believe the next route is in robotics, with their factory now using small robots to do straightforward jobs, that have increased both speed and productivity.

Packed with 1,344 eggs, 81 pounds of flour and 20,000 milligrams of THC, it took a five-person team to create the monstrous dessert.

And at 850 pounds, the cannabis-infused sweet treat weighed more than three times the current Guinness record holder.

A MariMed spokesperson said they wanted to do ‘something big’ for the release of their infused

TRIALS

HEMP WIGS IN UK COURTS

Vegan barrister Samuel March has swapped horse hair for hemp to produce a range of biodegradable vegan court wigs.

Mr March said: “I refuse to sponsor exploitation by buying expensive items made from animal products as this adds value to the practice of owning them and selling them for parts.”

He is now selling the hemp wigs to colleagues for £600 each and will donate all profits to animal protection causes.

Traditional wigs worn by barristers in England and Wales date back to the 17th century.

THAI-ME FOR CHANGE

Thailand has now given the ‘green light’ for decriminalising cannabis cultivation, the first country in Asia to do so.

This latest ruling by the government is expected to boost the country’s economy by promoting cannabis products as an emerging, booming industry.

After legalising cannabis for medical and research purposes in 2018, the Narcotics Control Board has dropped it completely from its controlled drugs list.

The health minister has said people wishing to grow cannabis at home under the new legislation must inform their local government first.

FUR ENOUGH

Italian fashion and skiwear brand Moncler is dropping fur from its collections to protect the planet.

It will phase out all fur between now and 2025 to ensure a ‘better future for all.’

Because of long fashion lead-in times, the Fall/ Winter 2023 collection will be the last to feature fur although it stopped sourcing the product this year. Moncler also promised new measures on climate action, fair sourcing, improving diversity and giving back to local communities.

COPS SEIZE MEDCAN PRESCRIPTION

A Scottish man suffering from chronic migraines has had his medical cannabis prescription seized by police at his local postal sorting office.

Liam Lewis, 29, says police refused to return the package even when he showed them his medical exemption which allowed him to legally use the cannabis oil.

Lewis, from Lerwick, Shetland, says he was threatened with prosecution after police said he failed to provide ‘satisfactory evidence’ that the oil was legal.

He said: “I’m distraught because I have been left with no effective way to treat my illness.”

A VIO-WIN FOR VEGAN MUSICIANS

An Irish craftsman used pear, wild berries and spring water to create a vegan violin… which he claims is an ‘acoustic improvement’ over animal-based alternatives.

FROM SLAUGHTER

MEAT-FREE MENUS SAVE 1M ANIMALS

Two plant-based food companies are helping spare the lives of almost one million US animals each year as diners increasingly switch to meat-free options.

Non-profit organisaton World Animal Protection (WAP) says companies such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are actively changing the way people eat.

WAP estimates that in 2021, 211,000 pigs, 77,000 cows and 350,000 chickens were spared as restaurant diners ordered products from the two companies instead of meat.

It says when retail sales are added, the number is closer to one million animals saved.

Padraig O'Dubhlaoidh – who has four decades of experience – developed the instrument when a customer asked for a vegan violin.

He said: “It was an intriguing question; I thought how many vegans are there, potential musicians, whose ethics won’t allow them to play…it must be awful.”

The body of Padraig’s violin has since become the first in the world to be given a Vegan Society trademark.

COOKING OIL FUEL CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF

British Airways plans to use fuel made from recycled cooking oil from next year as part of its plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The fuel will be made by Phillips 66 at its Humber Refinery in North Lincolnshire.

It contains no animal products and produces significantly less CO2 than conventional aviation fuel.

BA plans to buy enough sustainable aviation fuel to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by nearly 100,000 tons and says 10 percent of its flights will be powered this way by 2030.

HEMP IS THE STAR IN NEW KIND OF ENERGY DRINK

PepsiCo has launched a new hemp-infused energy drink…to help consumers feel good.

Rockstar Unplugged is infused with hemp seed oil, B vitamins, spearmint and lemon balm and comes in blueberry, passion fruit and raspberry cucumber flavours.

The drinks contain 80mg of caffeine – similar to the amount in a cup of coffee – and much less than other drinks in the Rockstar range.

Men aged between 18 and 34 consume the most energy drinks and PepsiCo hope to win over more females with the new product, which is currently on sale in the USA.

TEARLESS ONIONS WITH AN EYE-WATERING PRICE

Everyone knows that chopping onions makes you cry.

Well now they don’t have to. Waitrose has become the first UK retailer to sell tearless ‘Sunions’ which have taken 30 years of cross breeding to perfect.

Waitrose promises that the sweet, brown onion, which is already on sale in the USA and Spain, won’t cause even a single tear.

However, the price may bring a tear to shoppers’ eyes. Sunions cost £1.50 for a pack of three, compared with just 14 pence per onion for Waitrose’s cheapest own-brand.

THE 10 MINUTE CITY

South Korean capital Seoul is to get an eco-friendly car-free 500,000 square metre ‘10-minute city’ – where everything is within easy walking distance.

The mini city, designed by Dutch architects UNStudio, will feature

eight residential towers, green parks, a cinema, library, offices and a hotel.

Focusing on sustainability, water filtration systems will use reserve rainwater and food waste will be used for composting park areas.

RECOGNISING THE CANNABIS…CZECH

Doctors in the Czech Republic issued almost 20,000 cannabis prescriptions last year – the highest number since the country legalised its medical use in 2013.

The vast majority (80 percent) were issued to treat chronic pain with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease as the next highest categories.

The number of doctors authorised to issue therapeutic cannabis increased from 78 to 191 in the two years ending in 2021.

Data analysts Prohibition Partners said they expect medical cannabis sales to increase further this year.

MAKE LOVE TO SAVE THE PLANET

Sustainability touches almost every aspect of our daily lives from the cars we drive to the clothes we wear…and now it has entered the bedroom too.

Holland & Barrett says sales of animal-free condoms and sex toys are soaring online since the range was introduced a year ago.

The health and wellness retailer says top sales performers included vegan condoms, vegetable-themed sex toys and a corn on the cob bullet vibrator.

UNStudio co-founder Ben van Berkel, said: “We have aimed to create the ultimate contemporary 10-minute city, where the daily life experience of the residents is the top priority.”

MIND The unbe(leaf)able power of house plants DON’T MISS:

With Stress Awareness

Month taking place in April, we examine why this is something we need to take seriously in our lives.

Feeling stress is due to saying ‘yes’ to more than we can cope with. People see saying ‘no’ as a risk. We need to look at this as a negotiating opportunity.

MIND 26
Words: Oliver Smith and Patrick Griffin

Most of us know that events such as moving house, coming to terms with the death of a loved one or finding a new job can be highly stressful.

However, it is important to realise that the more common stresses associated with our day-to-day living can also have a huge impact on our lives.

Stress is the body’s main response to dealing with the challenges thrown at us. We all cope with stress differently and it is something that most of us could benefit from understanding better so that we learn to deal with it.

That’s why in 1992 Stress Awareness Month was created and now every April we all have the chance to learn more about its causes and cures.

The Mental Health Foundation says that threeout-of-four UK adults felt ‘overwhelmed or unable to cope’ by stress at some point over the last 12 months.

The Stress Management Society said: “Millions of us around the UK are experiencing high levels of stress and it is damaging our health.

“Stress is one of the great public health challenges of our time, but it still isn’t being taken as seriously as physical health concerns.

“Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems including anxiety and depression.

“It is also linked to physical health problems like heart disease, problems with our immune system, insomnia and digestive problems.”

The Stress Management Society is running its 30-Day Challenge for the month of April and wants people from all walks of life to take part.

The challenge encourages individuals to pick a positive action for their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing to carry out every day for the month.

Neil Shah, founder of Stress Management Society said: “Feeling stress is due to saying ‘yes’ to more than we can cope with. People see saying ‘no’ as a risk. We need to look at this as a negotiating opportunity.

“You need to ask yourself is it a higher or lower priority than what I am working on at the moment. When we get better at having these conversations we can do better.”

Isabella Goldie, Director of Mental Health Foundation said: “Individually we need to understand what is causing us personal stress and learn what steps we can take to reduce it for ourselves and those around us.

“We also need to change at a societal level. This includes ensuring that employers treat stress and mental health problems as seriously as physical safety.”

Stress is something that we all experience at some point in our lives.

STRESS TRIGGERS AND RELIEVERS

When it comes to dealing with stress the first step is to recognise if it is a problem in your life.

Stress can build up slowly over time until people feel they are unable to cope with the pressures it brings.

If left untreated, stress can lead to a number of physical conditions including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, ulcers, diabetes and allergies.

The Stress Management Society (www.stress.org.uk) has a wealth of information on their website to help people recognise and reduce stress in their lives.

HOW TO RECOGNISE STRESS

People who are suffering from stress may increase their use of alcohol, cigarettes or caffeine to help them cope better.

They may also lack motivation, sleep more than normal (or find it hard to sleep), lose their sense of humour or lack motivation at work and social activities.

Physical changes can include:

Indigestion and

High blood pressure

Aches and pains

Emotional changes can include:

Feeling Over whelmed and

A survey from the Money and Pension Service found nine million UK adults have a daily worry about their money, that’s nearly half the adult population. Struggles to pay rent, bills and buying groceries are very real and this is a very common cause of stress.

Personal trauma

As with many experiences, a traumatic one can leave an individual with many problems to cope with, with some even lasting a lifetime. Whether it is a violent act, a serious injury or shocking event like a bereavement in your family, these can all lead to huge psychological and physical strain.

Working long hours

You may have a tendency to take a lot on at work, resulting in regularly working late to get a job done.

Not only can this be a big trigger for stress, but when the work-life balance is too heavily favoured to one side, you can run the risk of damaging friendships and relationships in your private life.

COPING WITH STRESS

KEEP ACTIVE

When we are either stressed or angered, adrenaline is released into the body, increasing our heart rate, potentially damaging your blood vessels.

Daily exercise will help to reduce this release and produce the ‘good mood’ substance serotonin in the brain.

GET CREATIVE

Taking up hobbies or activities outside of work and home life can be hugely beneficial to alleviate stress.

If you’re struggling to decide what to start, you should think back to what you enjoyed as a child, such as reading, playing sports or drawing and painting as sources of inspiration.

SLEEP WELL

Skipping sleep can have a lasting effect on your body, both psychologically and physically.

Put down the smart-phone or laptop well before you plan to sleep and if you are worrying about tasks or deadlines you need to meet, then write them down so you can deal with them the next day.

TALK THINGS OVER

Talking to a friend about your stress and worries can be very beneficial as they can offer you emotional support so you don’t feel that you are suffering alone.

You can always talk to your GP so they can help you get the relevant help you need before matters can spiral out of control.

Finally, check out the The Stress Management Society’s website (www.stress.org.uk) and consider taking part in April’s Stress Awareness Month.

The unbe (leaf) able power of house plants

Houseplants can be a brilliant addition to your home, adding a touch of nature to any space…but which ones should you buy and how do you take care of them?

MIND 32

But as cities grow bigger – and homes get smaller – people are suffering a major hit to their daily dose of green.

However, while wild spaces aren’t always within reach, you can still enjoy the advantages of nature through the awesome power of houseplants.

Studies have shown that introducing a little bit of greenery to your home can reduce fatigue, improve air quality and increase your focus and attention.

Some research suggests that plants can even help you recover faster from illness and injury.

So, whether you live in a modest two-bedroom house or a cramped high-rise flat, it might be time to consider adding a few plants to your carefully curated décor.

To help you get started, we’ve listed some of the most common – and beneficial – flora to introduce to your home, as well as some tips and tricks for even the most notorious serial plant killers.

The Snake Plant

Botanical name: Sansevieria Trifasciata

Light: Can be kept in low light and direct sunlight.

Watering: Snake plants can be watered every two weeks (ensure soil is completely dry before watering).

Bonus Fact: Known by many names – including the Devil’s Tongue and Viper’s Bowstring Hemp – the Snake plant is one of the most resilient and easy-to-care for houseplants around.

The Banana Plant

Botanical Name: Dwarf Cavendish

Light: Keep in bright, in-direct light for best growing results.

Watering: Thrives in slightly moist soil so water regularly.

Bonus Fact: First introduced to the UK in 1834, these impressive plants were named after William Cavendish (the sixth Duke of Devonshire).

The Swiss Cheese Plant

Botanical Name: Monstera Deliciosa Light: Medium light is best for the Swiss Cheese Plant, somewhere bright but not directly in the sun. Watering: Top-up whenever the top two inches of soil dry out.

Bonus Fact: The Swiss Cheese plant takes part of its botanical name from the latin word for ‘delicious’, likely a reference to the rich and tasty fruit that it grows in the wild.

The Asparagus Fern

Botanical Name: Asparagus Setaceus Light: The Asparagus Fern can survive in most lighting conditions ranging from moderate shade to bright light…but keep away from direct sun.

Watering: Top-up whenever the top two inches of soil dry out

Bonus Fact: Despite the name, the Asparagus Fern isn’t a fern at all…it’s actually a member of the lily family.

Aloe Vera

Botanical Name: Aloe Barbadensis Light: Needs plenty of bright light (don’t keep in the shade).

Watering: Doesn’t require constant watering, only top up when the soil is dry.

Bonus Fact: This plant is famous for its healing potential, with its cooling properties helping to soothe burns, scrapes and bites.

The ZZ Plant

Botanical Name: Zamioculas Zamiifolia Light: While it can survive in those not-so-bright rooms and spaces, don’t keep the ZZ plant in complete darkness.

Watering: Needs minimal watering (be sure to let the soil dry out before you top-up).

Bonus Fact: The ZZ Plant – also known as the Eternity Plant – is famous for being almost impossible to kill, even surviving long periods without water.

Whether it’s brightening a space, improving your mood or even boosting creativity, plants can offer a host of amazing benefits.

It’s a kind of

magic?

A first of its kind medical trial shows that the psychedelic substance psilocybin has the potential to tackle treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and PTSD.

Current treatment options for these conditions are ineffective or only partially effective for many people.

MIND 34

Scientists from King’s College London, working in partnership with COMPASS Pathways, demonstrated that psilocybin can be safely administered at doses of either 10mg or 25mg to up to six participants simultaneously.

The research team believe that the psychedelic drug could offer a potential treatment for a range of mental health conditions.

Dr James Rucker, the study’s lead author, said the research was an ‘important first demonstration’ that the simultaneous administration of psilocybin can be explored further.

He said: “If we think about how psilocybin therapy may be delivered in the future, it's important to demonstrate the feasibility and the safety of giving it to more than one person at a time, so we can think about how we scale up the treatment.

“This therapy has promise for people living with serious mental health problems, like treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and PTSD.

“They can be extremely disabling, distressing and disruptive, but current treatment options for these conditions are ineffective or only partially effective for many people.”

One of the study’s key findings was that that psilocybin showed no short or long-term side effects in healthy people.

During the trials, up to six patients at a time received a dose of the drug in controlled conditions, along with one-to-one support from a psychotherapist to discuss their condition.

The participants were monitored closely by professionals for six to eight hours and were then followed up for 12 weeks after the study.

They were assessed on a number of factors including sustaining attention, planning, memory as well as the ability to process emotions.

The study team has since completed the second phase of the project which explored the efficacy and safety of psilocybin in people living with TRD and PTSD and are currently analysing the data.

New research into psilocybin –the psychedelic substance found in ‘magic mushrooms’ – could potentially see it being prescribed to treat mental health conditions.

MICROSOFT TEAMS UP WITH JOYE

With a renewed focus on the mental health and wellbeing of employees, Microsoft Teams gets a hi-tech boost.

With

Tech giant Microsoft has joined forces with Singapore-based mental wellness startup Joye to bring a new suite of wellness products to its platform.

The move comes as companies are increasingly looking to help employees deal with issues of mental wellbeing and productivity.

Mental wellness start-up Ginger revealed recently that 92 percent of CEOs said they were increasing their focus on mental health as a result of the disruption caused by the COVID pandemic.

The new partnership means

that any organisation’s Teams administrator can activate Joye for its workforce with one click from the Teams app store.

Joye’s artificial intelligence (AI) recognises the employee’s unique situation, guiding them with mood analytics, podcasts and behavioural techniques.

Employees can navigate through ‘Daily Brew’ - Joye’s measurement service to record and manage daily wellbeing with guidance from a virtual assistant.

They can also use, ‘Stress Busters’, a two-minute breathing technique to combat high stress in decision making situations.

Sanjeev Magotra, CEO and founder of Joye said: “Joye analyses your work patterns in Microsoft Teams with extreme

privacy and delivers timely suggestions to measure and manage your wellbeing when you may need it most.”

In 2017, Microsoft combined the majority of its collaborative business software onto Teams, this prompted the plan to discontinue the current service Skype for Business.

Teams now hosts 250 million monthly users with 145 million of those logging on daily to work, trade and negotiate.

Joanna Lim, Business Group Leader of Microsoft Singapore said: “With innovators like Joye, Microsoft Teams users can build and cement their habit of mental fitness and personal well-being, as they use the Teams platform for events, employee experiences, communications, and collaboration in a secure way.

Are keystrokes the new brush strokes?

Modern tech is truly limitless, allowing us to augment realities, mass produce impressive machinery, explore the vast reaches of our galaxy…and now create original art.

Replacing paint brushes with complex computer programs, a wave of AI-generated artwork is taking the world by storm.

And while there are dedicated members of the AI-art community who use intricate programs and algorithms to create refined pieces, there are also simple apps available for the less technical amongst us to play with.

New online tools allow anyone to enter a written prompt and watch the magic unfold as the system produces a unique – and often perplexing – collage of swirling colours and vaguely familiar imagery.

As one of the latest trends in artificial intelligence and machine learning, these uncanny art pieces are

increasingly popping up across social media and making their way into the real world.

Auction house Christie’s sold its first piece of algorithm-generated art in 2018, with the ‘Portrait of Edmond Belamy’ selling for upwards of $430,000…more than 40 times the original estimated value.

There are even Twitter accounts dedicated to showcasing these machine-made creations, acting almost as virtual galleries where people can view the wonders of the ever-improving AI art movement.

To see first-hand what these programmes could do, we used Wombo to create ten computergenerated art pieces.

By using iconic lines as prompts, we got a glimpse of how the AI interpreted some of the most famous lyrics, movie lines and quotes from across human history.

GUT INTO good HEALTH HABITS

So often do we hear health gurus and wellbeing warriors telling us to take good care of our guts… but what exactly is gut health and why is it so important?

53

Eating RIGHT

A good diet is a crucial foundation to any healthy lifestyle, with fruits, vegetables and consistent balanced meals providing your body with the tools it needs to thrive.

Reducing your intake of processed, high fat and sugary products is an important step in ensuring your wellbeing, with unhealthy foods putting an unnecessary strain on your gut.

Experts recommend fibre-rich foods such as chickpeas, lentils and whole grains to help stave of diseasecausing bacteria and keep your gut healthy.

Housing around 70 percent of the immune system, the gut plays a key role in keeping your body in check.

Not only does it break down food and distill those all-important nutrients, but it also impacts your mood, weight and helps maintain general wellness.

Some research even suggests that a healthy gut microbiome –which is made up of trillions of crucial bacteria – could benefit brain function.

However, despite the vital role it plays in your health, the need to keep your gut in top form can often be overlooked.

So, to help boost your wellbeing and keep you fit and fighting, we’ve highlighted a few of the ways you can maintain gut wellness.

STAY hydrated

Staying hydrated sounds simple enough…but many of us don’t have time in our busy schedules to hit our recommended daily dose of fluids.

Now there’s no need to worry, you don’t have to guzzle down an Olympic swimming pool worth of water to keep yourself in good health.

By simply drinking six to eight glasses every day, you can stay hydrated and reap the benefits to your gut, skin and so much more.

CATCH SOM E sleep

Missing out on a good night’s rest can lead to serious consequences, increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease and even shortening your life expectancy.

But a lack of beauty sleep can also wreak havoc on your gut, with some studies suggesting that sleep deprivation can cause digestive disorders.

By sticking to a healthy sleep schedule and trying to get a solid eight hours every night, some experts say you can have a positive impact on your gut.

When we think health, we usually worry about keeping our hearts ticking and our brains active, but there’s one unsung hero that often goes unnoticed.
BODY 54

STOP

smoking

By now smokers are well used to messages telling them that cigarettes are bad for them and are responsible for around eight million deaths around the world every year.

While many people will know that smoking can cause serious health issues with the heart and lungs, fewer know that it can also impact on gut health.

A 2018 study found that smoking can increase the numbers of harmful microorganisms in the gut while reducing the numbers of beneficial ones.

Cigarette use has also been linked with a number of gut problems including inflammatory bowel disease.

LET’S GET physical

Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining any healthy lifestyle, with those trips to the gym helping to keep your heart, lungs and even your mind in great shape.

But by doing at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise - or 75 minutes of intense exercise - every week, you can combat weight gain and potentially even promote a healthier gut.

So whether you prefer curling iron or running marathons on the treadmill, it’s important to make time for exercise.

MANAGE stress

High levels of stress are never good for you and can often take a significant toll on your physical and mental health.

Even the most iron of stomachs aren’t immune to worry and anxiety, with stress sometimes leading to cramps and bloating.

To see our guide on reducing stress, check out the story ‘Say ‘no’ not ‘yes’ to deal with stress’, in the Mind section of this issue.

MILLION DOLLAR STUDY

The National Football Association has chosen two North American universities to study how THC and CBD can be used to manage pain.

Words: Oliver Smith

THE NFL HAS AWARDED $1MILLION TO STUDY HOW CANNABIS AND CBD CAN BE USED IN PAIN MANAGEMENT FOR ELITE ATHLETES.

Medical researchers will investigate the effects of cannabinoids when treating sports injuries and concussion.

The project is part of a program to fund research into improving potential alternative pain management treatments for NFL players.

Scientists from the University of California San Diego will study the effects of cannabinoids on pain and recovery from sportsrelated injuries.

The clinical trial aims to assess ‘the therapeutic efficacy and adverse effects’ of both THC and CBD to relieve post-competition

soft-tissue injury pain in elite athletes.

NFL players will either be given THC, CBD or a combination of both to vape as part of their treatments following gamerelated injuries and compared to a group given a placebo.

The university said: “This study will bring together a research team with decades of clinical cannabis research experience.

“It will provide key, preliminary data regarding the possible

BODY 58

effectiveness of cannabinoids for sports-related injuries and inform future larger studies regarding study design and implementation challenges.”

Another team at the University of Regina will study whether CBD and THC can help reduce the use of opioids and other prescription medication in postconcussion syndrome athletes.

They will also help determine whether the neuroprotective properties of cannabinoids can

help lessen the effects of acute and chronic concussion.

Professor Patrick Neary, from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina said: “Ultimately, this study has the potential to change not only the lives of current and former NFL players, but also the lives of anyone who may suffer from a concussion.”

NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr Allen Sills said: “We are grateful to have the opportunity to

fund these scientificallysound studies on the use of cannabinoids that may lead to the discovery of data-based evidence that could impact the pain management of our players.”

Dr. Kevin Hill, Co-Chair of the NFL-NFLPA Joint Pain Management Committee, said: “The NFL is eager to advance the science of pain management and performance in an effort to improve the health and safety of players."

THE NFL IS EAGER TO ADVANCE THE SCIENCE OF PAIN MANAGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE IN AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF PLAYERS.

…THE NHS ‘SOUP AND SHAKE’ DIET

Thousands of NHS England patients will be offered a 12-month free diet programme after a pilot scheme sees positive outcomes for many.

We know weight loss will go a long way to help people stay well and avoid preventable illness and for many will also mean they can put Type 2 diabetes into remission.

BODY 62

Thousands

Early data showed that participants lost over a stone (7.2kg) after a month and over two stone (13.4kg) after three months.

The trials have been extended after it was shown that:

· People on the programme were able to keep their weight down over time and

· Around 50 percent of patients with Type 2 diabetes who experienced similar weight loss, were able to achieve remission of their illness after a year.

Already more than 2,000 people with Type 2 diabetes have improved their health from the pilot ‘soup and shake’ trial.

The extended trial will see participants put through a 12-month weight loss programme, under the supervision of expert clinicians and coaches.

The first three months will involve swapping meals for specially-designed, low calorie, diet replacement products to kick-start the weight loss.

After this, nutritious and healthy food is gradually reintroduced into the diet to help participants continue to lose weight and develop healthier eating habits.

One-to-one virtual meetings, group sessions and digital support are available to help keep patients on track.

Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS national clinical director for diabetes and obesity said: “The fantastic results our participants have achieved through this programme are really encouraging.

“We know this weight loss will go a long way to help people stay well and avoid preventable illness and for many will also mean they can put Type 2 diabetes into remission.

“This is also the latest example of the NHS rapidly adopting the latest evidence-based treatments to help people with Type 2 diabetes live well.

“With research showing that obesity causes more severe illness from COVID-19, as well as other serious diseases, there has never been a more important time to lose weight.”

The NHS diet is open to people aged 18 to 65 who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the past six years and with a body mass index over 27.

CHRIS ASKEW OBE CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT DIABETES UK

Chris said he was delighted to see that the free weight-loss programme had been extended to help thousands more people living with Type 2 diabetes.

He said: “Since its launch, this low-calorie diet pilot, inspired by Diabetes UK’s ground-breaking DiRECT trial, has helped thousands of people across England access the support they need to lose weight effectively and potentially put their Type 2 diabetes in remission.

“Remission can be life-changing, offering people a better chance of a healthier future.”

KAREN BRADBURY, 50 FROM DERBYSHIRE

Karen was told she may need to go on medication after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, but she started the programme a year ago and lost 5 stone, 3.5 lbs.

She said: “Since being on the low-calorie diet, I feel so much healthier and my blood sugar levels have nearly halved.

“I don’t need to start medication now; my energy levels have increased substantially and I am now swimming three to four times a week and walking every day.

“I used to wake up to 10 times a night to use the bathroom, I was thirsty all the time, exhausted and generally felt unwell.

“Now I sleep soundly all night. My mental health has also improved, I feel better and I’m living better for me and my children.”

NADEEM AKHTAR, 49 FROM SHEFFIELD

Nadeem has lost more than three stone and has seen his Type 2 diabetes go into remission since joining the ‘soup and shake’ plan. He said: “I lost my mum to diabetes, which really showed me just how destructive this disease can be.

“Being on the plan is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and my family.

“It was hard at first, but my health coach was so understanding and really helped me through the difficult times and keep up healthier habits.

“Now, I feel so much better in myself and I would rec ommend the programme to anyone.”

of overweight Brits will be offered ‘soup and shake’ diets on the NHS after clinical trials proved to be a massive success.
63

FACTS

Diabetes costs the NHS £10 billion a year.

Up to 1 in 20 prescriptions written by GPs are to treat diabetes.

Record numbers of patients are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and the projections are for this to continue climbing.

At current rates of increase, it has been estimated that nearly 39,000 more people could suffer a heart attack in 2035 , and over 50,000 could experience a stroke.

It’s ‘New Meat’ range also includes ‘lamb’ kebabs, sausages and mince, with plans to release a beef skewer and a minute steak in the future.

Claiming to be the first company to launch whole cut vegan alternatives on the market, the brand said it wants to create a world where anyone can enjoy meat ‘without compromise’.

It also hopes that, by replicating the taste, consistency and mouthfeel of the real thing, it can encourage more ‘carnivores’ to opt for meatless alternatives.

A Redefine Meat spokesperson said: “We believe enjoying meat is about more than just taste; it’s an experience that caters to all your senses.

“And having studied meat’s complex structure down to its molecular composition, we

understand what drives each sensory process.”

Co-founder Eshchar Ben-Shitrit added: “Our unique technology capabilities enable us to replace every part of the cow and we have achieved a level of superiority that surprised even some of the most recognised chefs in the world.”

But it’s not just happy diners that the brand is hoping for… it also wants to help protect the planet by reducing global meat consumption.

Ben-Shitrit explained that vegan alternatives could help world governments combat the growing climate crisis.

He said: “We’ve seen global leaders commit to landmark goals - such as the elimination of all deforestation by 2030 – and Redefine Meat has set its eyes on the real problem…not meat, but the way it’s produced.

“We have a genuine solution that today, not in 2030, preserves all the culinary aspects of meat that we know and love, but eliminates cattle as a means of production.”

Although it launched in Israel just last year, the brand’s ‘New Meat’ products are already appearing on menus of selected highend restaurants across the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

And, after raising an eye-watering $135 million in funding, it wants to open a new factory in the Netherlands and be featured in thousands of eateries across Europe by the end of 2022.

“When I first tasted Redefine Meat, I was mind blown…it’s the most clever thing I’ve ever seen in my 45-years of being in a kitchen.

“The world needs to eat less meat, but the reality is that until now plant-based meat products have fallen way short in terms of the quality and versatility required for our menus.

“Redefine Meat's NewMeat products are pure genius, giving you all the sustainability and health benefits of plant-based, without the compromise on taste and texture."

Joachim Gerner, Head Chef at Berlin-based two-Michelin star restaurant FACIL, said: “It looks good, it sounds good and when you touch it, it feels real and at the first contact with my mouth I was just like ‘wow’.

“We are in the middle of a storm, in the middle of a new revolution and it begins now…I see huge potential for these products with meat lovers.”

Shahaf Shabtay, famed Israeli chef, said:

“My philosophy is that food needs to be exciting, so when I tasted the meat, I was speechless.

“As a chef, the ability to cook for every type of diner without barriers or compromise, using a variety of techniques, is quite simply incredible.

“And Redefine Meat has created an ingredient that allows me to unleash full creativity and create dream menus.”

Ron Blaauw, Michelinstarred chef and TV personality said:

“The first time I tried it, I remember closing my eyes and appreciating the chewiness and mouthfeel like I would a great cut of meat…honestly, I was so surprised by the texture and structure.

“For me, this is a gamechanger, as we can now serve another variety of high-quality meat to our customers that just happens to be made from plant-based ingredients.

“Even now my head is still spinning with the possibilities this meat creates for our menu.”

He added: “We have to save the planet and I think this is a big step for the climate and everything…and for good food of course.”

GREAT DRINKS …

While good company and great atmosphere are key ingredients to a night on the town, drinking is optional… and these dry-bars are here to prove it.

BAR THE ALCOHOL 71

Whether it’s a quick beer after work, a tipple at the weekend or a few too many pints to celebrate a special occasion, the UK is infamous for its drinking culture.

And with tens of thousands of pubs and bars lining the nation’s streets, there are plenty of spots for people to enjoy a regular booze-up.

But what about the non-drinkers, all those who prefer a mocktail to round after round of shots…where can they go to meet up with friends, to unwind at the end of a shift or for a night on the town?

As the focus on wellness continues to grow and an increasing number of Brits are ditching the alcohol, a wave of ‘dry-bars’ is spreading across the country.

An answer for the booze-deniers and defacto designated drivers, these liq uor-free drinking locales offer a safe space for people who would prefer to stay sober…but don’t want to be exiled from city nightlife.

Lorelei Bandrovschi of the US-based Listen Bar said: “Bars are spaces of relaxation and we’ve been made to believe that alcohol has to be a part of that.

“In order to get to a drink optional culture as opposed to the current drink-by-default culture, we have to celebrate the choice of not drinking.”

She added: “It must have as much space as drinking, spaces that are cool, fun and desirable…and it’s really liberating to create space for your self and your life where a rowdy vibe doesn’t mean a hangover and blurry memories.”

So, to help those strictly sober CAN NAVIST readers – or just those who fancy a night away from the booze – we’ve put together an alcohol-free bar crawl of the UK and Ireland.

…and the best part is, none of these venues require a designated dry-ver.

YADA, Derby

Nestled in the heart of Derby, this ‘thriving social space’ was founded by university alumni who had witnessed the woes of student nights out.

With the goal to ‘reimagine the night time economy’ and ‘reinvent’ relationships with drinking, YADA offers a wide menu of beers, cocktails, wines and more…all without the alcohol of course.

The space also acts as a meeting ground for local creatives and ‘disruptors to the norm’, allowing them to come together in the walls of the rustic industrial vibe of the venue.

THE BRINK, Liverpool

Opening its doors in 2011, The Brink prides itself on being the UK’s first modern dry bar and resturaunt.

Boasting a wide range of non-alcoholic local and exotic drinks – including smoothies, mocktails and even an Australian lemon and lime bitters – the Liverpool-based venue caters to a host of tastes.

The bar – which is linked with charity organisation Action on Addictionalso pays particular attention to recovering alcoholics, providing help and support for people on their journeys to sobriety

THE VIRGIN MARY, Dublin

Combining a slick aesthetic, a collection of tempting alcohol-free cock tails and arguably the most creative name for a dry-bar, The Virgin Mary is a ‘luxury wellbeing’ venue in Dublin.

Founder Vaughan Yates explained that TVM is an answer to the culture shift around drinking, creating a space for those to were starting to look at alcohol-free as a real option.

Yates highlighlighted that his venue isn’t a far cry from traditional bars, with the same company, the same conversations and the same elements that make a great night out…all that’s missing is the booze.

THE NEST, Hastings

Founded and funded by local not-for-profit group Eggtooth, the Nest is a community hub etched into Hastings Old Town Hall.

As a host to the city’s first dry-bar, the venue is a place for people to come together, enjoy a bite to eat and indulge in some zero-proof cocktails.

The Nest is also used as a creative space, with stand-up, musical and spo ken word performers all showcasing their work at the ‘community hub’.

CAFÉ SOBAR, Nottingham

Armed with mouth-watering food, drinks and entertainment, Café So bar promises all the pleasures of traditional bars and social spaces…but without the ‘pressure and hangovers’.

And with Double Impact - a local drug and alcohol recovery charity - at the helm, the venue aims to help people whose lives have been ‘devastat ed by addiction’.

It even helps recovering addicts gain valuable volunteering and employ ment experience, all while boasting lively and welcoming décor.

&Love Long Prosper Unless your ideal partner has grey skin, buggy eyes and lives in the outer reaches of our galaxy, it may be harderto find love than you think. Words: Jordan Millar Love long and propser DON’T MISS: Page 82 75

Go green to meet the person of your dreams

If you’re on the hunt for a sustainable relationship but aren’t sure how to keep your love life ecofriendly, here are a few ‘green dating’ tips for you to keep in mind.

RELATIONSHIPS 76

Earth-conscious singletons are increasingly ditching the traditions of modern dating in favour of more environmentally minded alternatives.

Whether trading an evening at the movies for a night under the stars or choosing a home-cooked meal instead of eating at a restaurant, there are plenty of ways that green-minded lonely hearts are changing the way they date.

People are even incorporating their sustainable values into their online profiles, with ‘woman-first’ dating app Bumble seeing an uptick in the number of people listing ‘environmentalism’ as a key interest.

Naomi Walkland, Head of Bumble UK and Ireland said: “Compatibility is more than just physical attraction…now more than ever, people are looking to connect with those that share their values and priorities.

“It's encouraging to see people thinking about how the environment is important in all aspects of their lives - including dating.”

She added that, of the number of trends that have recently emerged in the world of romance, a focus on the environment is certainly one she ‘hopes to see continue’.

To help those seeking a partner who is just as happy to share a picnic at the park as they are spending the day at a climate rally, here are just a few green dating tips.

Steps to decrease your footprint

Not only are walking dates completely free, but they are also a great way to reduce your impact on the planet while getting to know your potential partner.

This doesn’t mean you have to walk around the same beaten park paths as everyone else, as you could visit a local monument, stroll through the open countryside or plot out a unique and completely random route instead.

Recycle, reuse and restyle

We can all be hit with the shopping bug on the days leading up to a big date, with many choosing to buy a new dress, shirt or even entire outfit to impress their love interest.

But splurging on new clothes every time you have a romantic rendezvous can not only be a burden on your wallet, but on the planet as well.

And while it’s best to try to wear clothes that you already own, if you really feel the need to try something new, why not borrow from a friend or visit your local charity shop instead?

Advocate while you date

If you really want to incorporate environmentalism into your dates, why not swap out dinner and drinks for litter picking and climate protests.

Not only does this let you see if your wouldbe-partner’s passion for the planet aligns with your own, but it also lets you both do something you love while building a foundation for your relationship.

Hungry for something greener?

There are sustainable date spots almost everywhere, so don’t feel like you have to visit a restaurant or bar that doesn’t match with your eco-conscious values.

Searching for eateries and pubs that are working to reduce their impact on the planet allows you to support smaller or local businesses and enjoy your meal with zero guilt.

Is your love for the planet getting in the way of finding the one? If so, green dating might be the answer for you.

From the surprising statistic that one-in-fifty travellers meet their future partner on a plane, to the ability for couples to synchronize their heart beats, we look at some unusual facts of love.

RELATIONSHIPS 80

Whether it’s between parent and child, siblings, friends or even couples, having that special someone by your side can be hugely beneficial to your health and happiness.

And while we know love doesn’t always have to be romantic, in this feature we wanted to highlight some of the most heartwarming facts about couples and the world of dating.

Here we give the lowdown on love, shedding light on everything from the power behind kissing to your chances of finding a match at 30,000 feet.

Lost in translation

There are five main love languages that couples use to show their affection including quality time, words of affirmation and acts of service.

A recent poll of 1,500 Brits – organised by online greeting card brand ‘thortful’ - suggested that the nation’s most popular love language was physical touch.

Quick to love

Despite what you might think, men are actually MORE likely to confess their love to a significant other first. Luckily, their partner shouldn’t be too far behind, as a new survey revealed the average UK couple will say ‘I love you’ in less than a month.

Love at 30,000 feet

With millions of people taking to the skies every day, passengers are bound to meet new people.

And with evidence from HSBC revealing that one in 50 travellers meets that special someone in the air, it seems planes are also a great spot for making a love connection.

Instant connections

New research suggests that almost three in four parents believe meeting their partner was love at first sight.

In another survey 34 percent of respondents claimed they had experienced an instant connection, with more men than women saying they’d fallen for someone on first meeting.

Let’s get physical

We use as many as 146 muscles when we kiss – 34 facial and 112 postural – and burn anywhere from three to 26 calories for every minute spent kissing..

Love & other drugs

Some experts say that falling in love can release feel good hormones in the brain that provide a sense of euphoria, mirroring the effects of cocaine and other illegal drugs.

Two hearts become one

There’s some evidence to suggest that couples may synchronize their heart rates when they are close together.

The research –conducted by the University of Illinois –monitored the pulses of ten long-term married couples to see how their vitals changed when they were in close proximity to one another.

If there’s one thing that almost every person on the planet can relate to, one universal truth, it’s that love plays a crucial role in our lives.

&Love Long Prosper

Unless your ideal partner has grey skin, bug eyes and lives in the outer reaches of our galaxy, it may be harder to find love than you think.

RELATIONSHIPS 82

If you’re looking for a 30-year-old, university-educated and London-based man to settle down with, then bad luck…there’s more chance of finding alien life instead.

To open the eyes of the UK’s hopeless romantics and show them the planetary odds of finding true love, a pair of scientists have developed a rather unusual online tool.

Astrophysicist Steven Wooding and data scientist

Rijk de Wet, based their digital ‘love calculator’ on the Drake Equation – a formula used to determine the likelihood of finding intelligent life in the Milky Way.

Looking at a handful of factors – including population growth, attractiveness and your own criteria for the ideal match – the system estimates your pool of potential partners.

It then stacks your chances for love up against the possibility that we have extraterrestrial neighbours. Wooding revealed that his own odds of finding a match were 2.1 times better than there being intelligent life within 1,000-light-years of earth.

This is more optimistic than the chances of our hypothetical lonely-heart Londoner, who would be 5.2 times LESS likely meet their soulmate.

Wooding said: “As someone who loves the topic of aliens, I got really interested in the idea of adapting the Drake Equation into the dating world.

“I believe that adding the fun factor of comparing people’s chances to the likelihood of an alien civilization somehow puts things into perspective.”

He added: “It makes them realise whether there really aren’t many options in their area…or if their preferences are just too narrow.”

While Wooding and de Wet are the minds behind the eye-opening online calculator, they aren’t the first to use the Drake Equation in the pursuit of love.

Professor Peter Backus of the University of Manchester used the formula to estimate his own shot at finding the one…only to discover that he had 26 potential matches.

However, despite his ‘extremely low’ odds, Backus met his wife-to-be, Rose, at a dinner party and married her just three years after publishing his findings.

Wooding and de Wet pointed to Backus as a shining example of how anyone can overcome the statistics and find true love.

They said: “It’s just statistics and common sense; the more you expose yourself to the dating world, the greater your chances of meeting someone to grow old with…you just have to take the plunge.

“Girlfriends – unlike aliens – aren’t science fiction… we don’t know whether Backus’ wife Rose matches all his criteria, but if this pessimistic mathematician can find love against the odds he calculated himself, then so can you.”

EIGHT

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

DELTA-8 DELTA-8

While it exploded into the cannabis limelight, there is still a lot we don’t know about Delta-8. Here we highlight eight things you should know about this particular cannabinoid.

Words: Oliver Smith

Whether or not you’ve heard about it, Delta-8 is rapidly becoming the next big cannabinoid in the industry.

As the new kid on the block, ‘weed light’ erupted onto the scene as a milder version of traditional cannabis.

And while it gained huge popularity online, there’s still a lot left to learn about this mysterious substance.

CULTURE 86

HEMP HERITAGE

Unlike smokable buds, Delta-8 is pro duced during the extraction process of the hemp plant.

This means that the cannabinoid can be produced legally, but still retains its desira ble psychoactive properties.

IN THE UK

Due to the country’s conservative stance on psychoactive substances, Delta-8 is completely unavailable in the UK.

Bill Russell of the Association for the Can nabinoid Industry highlighted that, while it is accessible in the US, the same legal loophole doesn’t exist in the UK.

He said: “Delta-8 THC is on the list of con trolled cannabinoids included in the Misuse of Drugs Act, so it is not legal to handle in the UK without a license from the Home

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

The compound is yet to undergo the same testing, studies and research as its regu lated counterparts.

This means that we don’t yet have a full understanding of Delta-8’s effects on the mind and body.

A RAPIDLY EXPANDING CRISIS?

With the lack of regulations for Delta-8, there is currently a lot of concern sur rounding the potential health risks.

Not only does the booming grey-market potentially put consumers at risk, but could also pose a threat to legitimate companies, manufacturers and retailers.

The US Cannabis Council even released a statement, saying that the sale of adulter ated or unregulated Delta-8 products is a ‘rapidly expanding crisis’.

TO BAN OR NOT TO BAN

States that don’t have cannabis regula tions – including Texas - have blacklisted

But, while it’s not yet regulated or federally approved, the substance is readily avail able in places like California, Oregon and Colorado.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are currently exploring whether the cannabi noid is safe for use.

WEE-D IT OUT

Despite its notable lack of potency – when compared with Delta-9 THC – Delta-8 can still trigger a positive drug test.

This is because, while Delta-9 THC is mixed with a host of other cannabinoids in flower form, Delta-8 is a pure and isolated psy choactive substance that can trigger your typical drug test.

LOWER BLOW

Delta-8 shares a lot of similarities with the long-standing Delta-9 THC but delivers a far less potent high.

This makes it more accessible for first tim ers, who use it as a gentler introduction to the psychoactive side of cannabis.

FAKE IT TO MAKE IT

Contrary to popular belief, commercial Delta-8 THC is not extracted directly from the plant.

Because there is so little of the naturally occurring substance in cannabis and hemp plants, it is instead typically synthesised in a lab.

87

Calming the energy crisis

With fuel costs at an all-time high and looking likely to climb even more, we look at some simple tips to help keep those bills under control.

CULTURE 88

The stark reality hit home when householders were told to expect a £700 price hike from April as regulators raised the energy price cap to a record high.

Millions could be driven into fuel poverty because of the huge costs of gas and electricity. This means it is now more important than ever to ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible.

Taking a few simple measures can have a significant effect on your annual bills and these are some you may consider:

Solar panels

The use of solar panels to subsidise your energy bills is becoming more popular, with the cost of instillation falling and the availability of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariffs.

The SEG allows householders to generate the energy they need for their homes whilst being able to sell any surplus back to the grid.

Solar panels can be a big investment, so it is worth doing careful research to see whether they are right for you.

Check current appliances

Your home appliances, especially if they are old, may be using far more energy than you think.

It is now more important than ever to factor in running costs of appliances and replacing older appliances with more efficient ones may make financial sense.

Also switch off devices when not in use rather than putting them in standby mode. It has been estimated that the average UK household spends £35 every year just to keep devices on standby.

Energy efficient lights

The cost of home lighting accounts for nearly 15 percent of total bills according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Switching over to LED bulbs from traditional halogen lights could save up to £40 annually on bills. You can save even more by switching lights off in rooms that are not in use.

Investing in timer system

Timer systems can help boost energy efficiency and lower

monthly bills.

A smart water timer can allow households to limit the amount of time the water heater runs during the day.

Appliance timers can be a solid choice to improve the efficiency of your home, by setting devices to run only when they are needed.

Turn the thermostat down by one degree

For every degree that the thermostat is turned down, it is estimated that the average household could save between one and three percent on its heating bill.

By fitting a reflector panel behind your radiator, you can boost the heat output so you may not even notice a difference in temperature.

Check your doors

& windows

Check that your doors close properly. A lot of heat can escape from badly fitted doors and windows.

Draft excluder strips can be fitted to help keep the heat in and it may also be worth considering replacing doors or windows which are particularly badly fitting.

Use less water

Greywater recycling allows you to reuse water from taps, sinks, washing machines and showers and this could result in significant savings on your water bills.

You can collect rainwater by attaching a water run off pipe to guttering outside your house and save it in a small water silo. This can then be used for watering the garden or washing the car.

Energy costs are spiralling out of control and all the indicators point to the fact they will keep on climbing.
89

A WORD OF

WARMING

Non-fungible tokens may be the latest craze right now, but do they come at too high a cost to the environment?

Just as we were getting to understand cryptocurrencies, it seems we have a new ‘crypto-cousin’ to contend with…the non-fungible token or NFT.

This relatively new kid on the block is behind the latest craze of online collectables, which has taken the internet by storm.

NFTs are used to prove ownership of a specific item and

are increasingly being used to trade virtual collectibles such as digital art.

They can be traded for anything from a few pounds to several million, but critics say they waste huge amounts of energy.

NFTs are typically held on the Ethereum blockchain, a digital ledger which securely records transactions across multiple computers.

The issue is that the huge series of electronic transactions needed to support blockchain exchanges require vast networks of computers working 24 hours a day.

It has been estimated the energy required for a single NFT transaction would power a fridge for a month.

More worryingly, these processes also involve minting, selling and transferring digital tokens which can use ten times as much energy again.

French artist and environmental activist Joanie Lemercier cancelled a planned bitcoin project when he discovered its environmental impact.

He said: “My release of six CryptoArt works consumed in 10 seconds more electricity than my entire studio did over the past two years.”

Words: Oliver Smith and Patrick Griffin
CULTURE 90
The danger is that NFTs become the key to a new market of digital collectables, thereby resulting in an inexcusable amount of wasted energy.

WHAT ARE NFTS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

NFTs are unique cryptographic tokens existing on a blockchain and which cannot be replicated.

They can be used to represent items like artwork and real-estate, allowing real-world tangible assets to be bought, sold and traded more efficiently, while reducing the probability of fraud.

NFTs can also be used to represent individuals' identities, property rights, and more.

Much of the current market for NFTs is centred around collectibles, such as digital artwork, sports cards and rarities.

NFTs also contain ownership details for easy identification and transfer between token holders.

Source: Investopedia

Environmental activists want companies in the NFT sector to be open about the high energy costs so that consumers are aware of their environmental impact.

Last year online marketplace ArtStation axed plans to offer NFTs on its platform after a social media backlash.

It said: “In light of the critical reception on social media regarding NFTs, it’s clear that now is not the right time for NFTs on ArtStation.

“We are very sorry for all the negative emotions this has caused. Despite our attempts to validate our approach, we clearly

made a mistake and admit fault. It was our bad.”

One artist who used the platform described NFTs as ‘a goddamn ecological nightmare pyramid scheme.’

Adrian Pforzheimer, an analyst with the Frontier Group, said:

The danger is that NFTs become the key to a new market of digital collectables, thereby resulting in an inexcusable amount of wasted energy.”

However not everyone agrees that blockchain technology will ultimately be bad for the environment.

Dr Iwa Salami, an Associate Professor in Law at the University of East London, said: “It sounds contradictory, but adopting blockchain technology could actually have a positive effect on the environment over the long term.

“It could allow companies to automate many of their complex payment systems, reducing the number of commuting employees and resulting in fewer transportrelated emissions.”

91

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR AN NFT?

Here we highlight some of the most high-profile and very high value NFT transactions from around the world.

THIS CHANGED EVERYTHING

‘This Changed Everything’ is an NFT featuring the original source code for the WWW.

It was auctioned by internet inventor Sir Timothy Berners-Lee for $5.4 million (£4M) in June last year to an anonymous buyer. The NFT also came with a moving visualization of the nearly 10,000 lines of code, a letter from Sir Tim about how he created it and a digital ‘poster’ of the full code.

THE FIRST EVER TWEET

Twitter’s millionaire cofounder Jack Dorsey sent the world’s first ever tweet on March 21, 2006.

It read: “just setting up my twittr” and is still there, for free, for anyone to access.

However, he auctioned it last year as an NFT for $2.9 million.

Now, while the whole world still has access to the iconic 21-letter tweet, Bridge Oracle CEO Sina Estavi, had digital proof that the message is actually now his.

Estavi said: “By bidding on Jack Dorsey’s first tweet of history…I wanted to emphasize the importance of NFTs on the future of crypto.”

NYAN CAT

EVERYDAYS:

THE FIRST 5,000 DAYS

In April 2011 the world was introduced to an animated cartoon cat with a Pop-Tart for a body which went on to become a viral internet sensation.

The ‘Nyan Cat’ YouTube video has now amassed close to 200 million views and the animated moggy is still scampering across the screen, leaving a rainbow trail in its wake.

To mark its tenth anniversary, creator Chris Torres remastered the image, attached it to a NFT and sold it for $590,000 (£433,000) at an online auction.

THE MERGE

In May 2007, digital artist Beeple launched a project to post a new work of art online each day for 5,000 days.

He then stitched together recurring themes and colour schemes from the marathon project to create a new artwork called ‘Everydays: The first 5,000 days.’

Beeple, the graphic designer and motion artist Mike Winkelmann, then made more art history in March last year when he sold the Everydays: The first 5,000 days NFT at Christie’s for $69 million (£50m).

The most expensive NFT ever (at time of writing) is a digital artwork called The Merge. It was created by a digital artist known only as Pak and was sold in December for $91.8 million (£68M). It was split up into 312,686 pieces which were all sold over 48 hours on the Nifty Gateway marketplace. When the sale closed there were 28,983 buyers who each received a slightly different image based on how many pieces they bought.

What impact will Malta’s legalisation move have on the cannabis market, asks CBD-Intel

Malta becoming the first EU country to legalise recreational cannabis in some form will still have a commercial impact even though the regulations do not create a retail market.

The legislation will finally confirm the legality of hemp-derived CBD products, something that was unclear before. And it will not prohibit the sale of cannabis – merely limit it to non-profit cannabis clubs.

The non-profit statute that the bill references states: “Provided further that an organisation shall continue to be deemed as non-profit making notwithstanding that:

(i) it obtains a pecuniary gain from its activities when such gain is not received or credited to its members but is exclusively utilised for its established purposes;

(ii) it buys or sells or otherwise deals in goods or services where such activities are exclusively related to its principal purposes”.

It is expected that these cannabis clubs will operate similarly to those seen in the Catalonia region of Spain – albeit with the full backing of being expressly permitted in national law, unlike those operating in Barcelona and its surrounds.

Furthermore, Maltese lawmakers may have written the law with an eye to eventually establishing more of an export market. The country is already attempting to set itself up as major player in the production of medical cannabis products.

It now states that the to-be-established Authority on the Responsible Use of Cannabis is to “identify overseas developments related to cannabis use that are of direct interest and relevance to Malta”.

About CBD-Intel

The new law, which will become effective on a date to be set by the Maltese minister for equality, also records a definition of cannabis that includes flowers, leaves and resin from the cannabis plant but does not include seeds or “cannabinoid products containing not more than zero point two (0.2) percent of tetrahydrocannabinoil (THC)”.

This does open a question about the future of hemp production, as hemp plants would seem to be included in the definition of cannabis, with only cannabinoid products being excluded.

These may be clarified at a later date as the Ministry for Equality has the powers to make further regulations for the provisions of the act to be implemented better as time goes on and potential issues are identified.

It will now be worth monitoring the international response. The microstate of San Marino was set to become the first European country to create some form of legal recreational cannabis provision but was forced to shelve its plans as a result of international pressure.

How both the European Commission and the United Nations respond to this will be interesting. The UN will likely add Malta to its list of habitual rule-breakers that it warns are violating international drug treaties on a fairly regular basis. This includes countries such as Uruguay, the US (because of individual states) and Australia (because of the cannabis liberalisation actions taken by the Australian Capital Territory).

It is the EC action that could have the greater impact, both in terms of Malta’s plan and the future actions of other European states in various stages of looking to legalise or decriminalise recreational cannabis such as Luxembourg (where plans are advanced), Germany (promised) or the various countries where some form of cannabis law relaxation has been proposed. A critical response from the European Commission could delay or even scupper those plans, despite Luxembourg’s progress.

White Label World Expo London

The globetrotting White Label Expo recently landed in London and we were thrilled to see so many CBD and health brands amongst the exhibitors.

With visitors from across the globe, hundreds of exhibitors and a packed schedule of expert speakers, White Label World Expo London was an unsurprising success.

This two-day event was packed with entrepreneurship and networking opportunities, acting as a hub of col laboration between brands.

I was very relieved to be able to at tend this expo without having to talk from behind a face mask, which is something that I have found can be quite difficult when trying to commu nicate with people.

One thing that I was impressed by with this event was the number of

attendees, who came to the expo despite a number of challenges.

For instance, there were also strikes on the London tube at the same time as the White Label show, but the event still had a nice steady stream of visitors.

I also noticed that there was a very friendly atmosphere across the entire expo, with busy exhibitor stands and large audiences gathering for master classes and keynote talks.

There was an especially great roster of speakers at the event, with the program boasting experts from Ever peaks, TikTok and even Amazon.

The talks covered everything from marketing in a new ‘digital age’ to

how to ‘survive and thrive in any economy’, offering invaluable insights and knowledge to visitors.

I was particularly pleased to see so many CBD and health brands exhibit ing at this White Label Expo.

I found so many new companies showcasing a diverse range of products, including exercise-friendly skincare and innovative nutritional supplements.

All in all, this was a wonderful show for business networking and there were endless white label opportuni ties for brands wanting to launch in the heath sector.

We look forward to their next White Label event this May in Las Vegas!

He said: “We don’t believe that the world of wellness should be limited to the pages of our publication and, while we’ve already done so much to share the power of well being with the world, there is still more to be done.

“So, I call on all you filmmakers to write your scripts, ready your actors and show us what you can do.”

He added: “Movies are a brilliant and creative medium that should be encouraged and I hope our

Say

‘ I DO ’ to these wellness tips wedding

Planning a wedding is no small feat, requiring everything from flowers to suave three-piece suits…so here are a few ideas to help stave-off that pre-marriage stress.

CULTURE 98

Whether big or small, weddings can often take months of planning and coordination, posing a serious challenge to even the most organised of couples.

Once you get past the first and arguably most crucial hurdle – whether or not your partner says yes – you then have to navigate meetings, phone calls and, of course, the complex family politics. However, once the dust settles, you escape the labyrinth of wedding fairs and finally claw your way out from under stacks of paperwork and vendor contracts…it’ll all going to be worth it.

But to help make that planning process a little easier – and keep you somewhat sane as you organise one of the biggest get-togethers of your life – here are a few tips for maintaining wedding wellness.

01

Plan ahead

Leaving things to the last minute is never a good idea – especially if you’re trying to cram a year’s worth of planning into just a few short weeks.

With more than 200,000 weddings in the UK every year, vendors and venues are often booked up well in advance, so getting a head start can not only save unnecessary stress, but also means you have more options to choose from.

02

Leave some room in your budget

No matter how detailed your wedding plans are, unexpected costs and hidden fees are bound to come up.

Even if you organise your special day down to the second, invite typos, cancellations and accidents at the hands of butter-fingered groomsmen can all eat into your budget.

But, by giving yourself a buffer to prepare for all those potential planning blunders, you can give yourself peace-of-mind that everything will run smoothly.

03

Remember there’s no right way to get married

Traditions are just that…traditions, so you shouldn’t feel like you have to plan your whole wedding day by the book.

Maybe formal suits aren’t for you, or you’d rather a stack of muffins than a three-tier cake; whatever you prefer, just remember that it’s okay to do things your way.

04 Have a monthly non-wedding date

While your wedding might be one of the most treasured days of your life, months of planning can get overwhelming.

It’s important to spend some quality time together with your husband or wife-to-be where the all weddingrelated stresses are off the table.

Whether a grand candle-lit dinner or a quick afternoon coffee, taking the occasional non-wedding date can be a great way to destress.

05 Make use of wedding apps & guides

In the age of internet guides and advice, there are seemingly countless digital tools available to help you organise your special day.

A quick trip online will find you an app for almost every aspect of wedding planning; whether it’s figuring out your colour scheme or hunting for stunning and unique venues.

The community of wedding YouTubers can also be a big help, with experienced planners and vendors offering insider advice through short and easy-to-digest videos.

Getting married isn’t as simple as dropping down on one knee, pulling out a diamond ring and asking that allimportant question.

My Diary wedding

We sat down with bride-to-be Keala Woolley to get a better insight into the highs and lows of wedding planning.

Here, she told us about her experiences organising her special day and gave advice for couples at the start of their own planning process.

When my partner proposed it was one of the happiest days of my life…I couldn’t believe that after almost a decade together we were taking that next step and tying the knot.

And while I can’t wait to throw on my dress, walk down the aisle and finally say ‘I do’, the journey to get there has been stressful to say the least.

Navigating complex family politics alone was one of the biggest sources of worry and headaches, with distant relatives and long-lost friends complaining that they didn’t get an invite to our intimate ceremony.

But unless you have an unlimited budget, then it’s just not possible to have every person you’ve ever known join you on your special day.

To try and keep our families happy, my partner and I employed one simple rule when narrowing down our guestlist…would we be offended if we weren’t invited to their wedding?

If the answer was ‘no’, then unfortunately they didn’t make the cut, though, no matter who it was, it was still difficult to turn people down.

One of the best things about our wedding planning process was the freedom to choose what we wanted.

Moving away from traditions, my partner and I paid for the whole thing ourselves, which meant there were no extra people to please and no guilt when things got pricey.

Early in the process I saw a quote that read something like: “If your parents pay for your special day, then you’re basically planning their dream wedding”, but that wasn’t the case with us at all…we did things our way.

One of the most important things to remember – and the thing that’ll save you mountains of wedding stress – is that you are supposed to be a team, this is the big day for you and your partner.

If you stand by one another, listen to your partner and support one another’s choices and wants, then you’ll kick married life off the right way…together.

SUPER

This year’s Super Bowl sparked controversy as commercials for booze, fast food, betting and even COVID testing were all in, but cannabis ads were out.

CENSORSHIP FOR A SUPER BOWL CULTURE 110

AN ADVERT FOR CANNABIS INDUSTRY GIANT WEEDMAPS.

CEO Chris Beals was willing to pay a seven-figure sum for a 30-second advert during the clash which saw the LA Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals by 23-20.

He wanted the opportunity to showcase his company at one of the most sought-after advertising opportunities of the year, but the ad was reportedly rejected by NFL Super Bowl broadcaster NBC.

Weedmaps is one of the cannabis industry’s largest marketplace and delivery services and it is understood that the ad was not going to specifically promote buying cannabis.

Super Bowl adverts can easily cost $6-7 million for half-a-minute airtime, but with an audience of around 100 million it is certainly great exposure for any brand.

Weedmaps Chief Operating Officer Juanjo Feijoo told advertising trade publication Adweek: “The answer was a hard no – they wouldn’t even

entertain the conversation.

“We see ourselves as trying to be trailblazers in the industry and making new inroads where others haven’t gone before in cannabis advertising…so it was disappointing.”

Instead Super Bowl fans watched commercials for streaming service Netflix, fast-food chain Taco Bell, sports betting company DraftKings and alcohol giant Budweiser.

There were many new advertisers this year, with crypto business Coinbase Global, online travel service Booking.com and COVID test provider Cue Health all making their debut.

Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals said: “There’s an irony that the biggest night for advertising will feature an array of consumer brands in regulated industries, from beverage alcohol to sports betting, yet legal cannabis retailers, brands and businesses have been boxed out.

“Cannabis is legal in far more states than sports gambling, and we can’t even talk about it in the general societal sense or even the medicinal sense."

There was also outrage on social media when news broke that the ad had been blocked.

Twitter user ForThePeople wrote: “But beer is fine? Alcoholism is a much greater concern than cannabis smoking!”

Noel Bilodeau had a similar complaint, saying: “Hypocrisy at its finest. Promoting fast food and alcohol is fine though.”

An NBC spokesperson said: “Under broadcast standards, we do not currently accept cannabisrelated advertising.”

Weedmaps had the last laugh though. It released a satirical ad on YouTube to coincide with the Super Bowl exploring the censorship faced by cannabis advertising.

BUILDING A better FUTURE

Architects are increasingly searching for new and creative ways to design green homes, cities and public spaces, here we look at just a few of the most impressive.

With sustainability taking the world by storm, green-thinking architects are ditching the brick-and-mortar and instead pioneering buildings of the future.

From recycled shipping-container-stadiums to 3D printed homes and repurposed runways, experts are utilising innovative materials and methods to combat the growing climate crisis.

And with many countries around the world pledging their support for a greener future, it’s likely we’ll see much more ‘sustainable architecture’ starting to emerge.

Here we highlight just a few of the most creative and unique ‘kind-on-the-planet’ projects to come from a growing international focus on eco-consciousness.

CULTURE 112

Easyhome Huanggang Vertical ForestCity Complex, China

ARCHITECTURE

These towering vertical forests pair innovative urban architecture with sprawling green spaces to create a heightened living experience.

Featuring more than 40 trees, almost 5,000 shrubs and a host of flowers and climbing plants, the foliageinfused structures will be used as residential homes.

The development features five towers in total, two of which being greenery-inspired apartment buildings and the remaining three being standard high-rises used for hotels and commercial spaces.

As well as creating a unique, natural space for residents and tourists, the Easyhome towers also absorb more than 20 tons of C02 and produce up to 11 tons of oxygen every year.

113

Standing at an impressive 240 metres, this feat of ingenuity and sustainable engineering incorporates the natural desert winds into its slick design.

The two towers of the Bahrain World Trade Centre are connected by a series of sky bridges, each fitted with a turbine that generates an estimated 15 percent of the structure’s power.

Even the shape of the structure is designed to redirect and funnel wind toward the turbines, earning the complex a number of awards for innovation and its incorporation of renewable energy.

As well as its striking wind turbines, the WTC also employs gravel roofs, reflective pools and a chilled water-cooling system to boost energy efficiency and sustainability.

World Trade Centre, Bahrain Stadium 974, Qatar

This impressive modular steel structure combines –you guessed it – 974 repurposed shipping containers to form a ‘fully demountable’ football stadium.

Designed and built for the FIFA World Cup 2022, the first-of-its-kind arena can hold up to 40,000 people and requires fewer building resources than standard stadiums.

The containers – while eventually being used to form the exterior of the structure - were also used to transport toilets, seating, concession stands and other materials.

Stadium 974 can even be dismantled and reused for different events after the 2022 football tournament… potentially even being spread out into multiple smaller venues or transported for the next World Cup.

Museum Tomorrow,of Rio De Janeiro

This bold project was set to breathe new life into one of the most disadvantaged areas in Rio De Janeiro, all while raising questions on the future of people and the planet.

Not only did it turn one of the most deprived areas of the city into a tourism and economic hotspot, but it also succeeded in becoming a ‘museum of the future’.

The structure integrates a number of sustainable and eco-conscious features - including natural ‘energy and light sources’ – into its design.

The museum – which cost almost £40 million to make - also uses water from the Guanabara Bay as a part of its cooling system and reflecting pools.

Xuhui Runway Park, Shanghai

Built on the site of the disused Longhua Airport, this aviation-inspired park doubles as an ‘urban revitalisation project’ and a homage to the area’s rich history.

Almost two-kilometres long, the park reuses concrete from the old runway to ‘preserve the site’s memory’, incorporating a strip of panels – that still have their original markings intact – as the main pedestrian pathway.

The award-winning site also integrated plane imagery into smaller details – including lights and seating design – further honouring the park’s aviation past.

To promote sustainability and eco-friendly design, the Xuhui Runway Park even collects, stores and cleans runoff rainfall from the surrounding area, recycling it as a part of onsite water features.

After Marvel debuted its first big-screen deaf superhero, we took a look at the comic-book titan’s representation of disabilities and mental health illness.

CULTURE 116
Words: Jordan Millar

.

TO LIVE WITH A DISABILITY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A superhero

Continuing Marvel’s 13-year cinema hot-streak, the highly anticipated ‘Eternals’ blockbuster was a huge success with fans… but not for the reasons you might expect.

While the film introduced us to a dynamic cast of characters and saw the MCU reach cosmic new heights, its real triumph was the debut of Marvel’s first big-screen hearing-impaired hero.

Makkari – played by deaf icon Lauren Ridloff – is an immortal speedster who can generate shockwaves, packs a superhuman punch and can move at the speed of light.

And while her comic counterpart is traditionally a ‘hearing male’, the film’s writers and producers reimagined the character for her first silver screen appearance.

During the 26th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was hinted that the fictional Makkari taught sign language to the first humans.

But with a 250 percent spike in online searches for ‘beginners’ sign language’ since the Eternals was announced, it’s safe to say she had a very real influence on cinemagoers and MCU fans as well.

Actress Lauren Ridloff said: “This is great…do learn sign language from deaf/hard of hearing teachers and content creators.

“I am thrilled about being given the opportunity to represent the deaf community and bring that storyline within the MCU…I think there’s plenty of room for more stories like that.”

Although Makkari is the first deaf hero to feature in the MCU, Marvel’s vast library of comics and films is filled with characters who have disabilities or mental health illnesses.

HERE WE LOOK AT JUST A FEW: 117

Despite being blind, Daredevil – also known as Matt Murdock - is one of the most accomplished combatants and well-known heroes in Marvel Comics history.

The lawyer-by-day, vigilante-by-night possesses superhuman hearing, smell, taste and touch, which grants him an impressive selection of abilities and powers.

The ‘man without fear’ has even featured in a Hollywood movie and a hit Netflix show, but not everyone was happy with the character’s onscreen portrayals.

And while some advocates celebrated the representation, there were some who critisised how the subject of blindness was handled.

Following the 2003 Daredevil film, Brent Hopkins of the American Foundation for the Blind said: “There are lots of blind people out there, they are normal people who enjoy everyday things …to live with a disability, you don't have to be a superhero."

A mutant with ‘Dark Force’ abilities, Silhouette Chord has regularly featured on the pages of Marvel Comics over the past 20 years.

After taking a bullet to the back during a shootout, Silhouette was partially paralyzed and required crutches to walk.

However, with her roster of superpowered abilities, martial arts expertise and a pair of combat crutches, Silhouette had a long career as a vigilante – appearing more than 100 times since her introduction in 1990.

She was even active in major Marvel storylines over the years, including Infinity War and Civil War.

Despite his roster of dangerous and deadly villains, many fans consider Moon Knight’s fractured mental health to be his biggest foe.

First introduced in 1975, the mercenary turned anti-hero has frequently been depicted with Dissociative Identity Disorder.

As a result of his DID, Moon Knight – also known as Marc Spector - is often shown to have multiple personalities and personas, these include wealthy playboy Steven Grant and everyman cab driver Jake Lockley.

Now with a Disney+ show on the way – headed by Hollywood superstar Oscar Issacs – fans are hoping the character can be used to explore DID in a nuanced and realistic way, steering away from long-established and exaggerated tropes.

Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and a shining example of how super heroics can burden your mental health, the MCU’s Iron Man is no stranger to anxiety and panic attacks.

After a close brush with death during the famed ‘Battle of New York’, it’s clear that Tony Stark was still distressed by his trauma.

In his next cinematic appearance – Iron Man 3 –the Armoured Avenger had a number of panic attacks and sleepless nights, leaving many to question if he was suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Psychologist Dr. Andrea Letamendi highlighted that Iron Man 3 was the first time ‘when we see a hero suffer undeniable instances of significant mental health disturbance’ in the MCU.

She said: “Tony’s struggle with anxiety is poignant because it allows us to realise that he is, in fact, still human.

"To this end, it doesn’t matter to me if his panic attacks are indicative of clinical PTSD, complex PTSD, subclinical anxiety disorder, or another psychiatric category we can use as a label.”

She added: “Tony Stark is a superhero with the psychological makeup of a human."

In an effort to reduce our footprint on the planet, brands around the world are exploring sustainable materials for eco-conscious shoes…here we look at just a few.

As climateconsciousness grows more popular than ever, many of us are taking steps to reduce our impact on the environment.

From ditching meat to riding bikes, millions of people are making changes to protect our planet…but while their hearts may be in the right place, the question is whether their soles are too.

The recent rise in green thinking has spurred an explosion in sustainable vegan footwear alternatives.

High-end names and innovative new start-ups are combatting the growing climate crisis by using new and creative materials for their shoes.

So, whether grape leather or corn, here are just a few of the biggest brands making strides in the world of sustainable footwear.

By 2028 the brand wants all of its packaging to be made from recycled and sustainably-sourced materials and by 2040 it’s committed to producing 100 percent of its footwear with sustainable materials.

According to Hackett, the North American cannabis industry should get accustomed to the idea of having environmentallyfriendly packaging as a whole because consumers are increasingly looking for

It says: “We start with materials that continue to heal the environment throughout their lifecycles, like plantbased hemp plastic and reclaimed ocean plastic and tailor-make packaging solutions that are good for the environment.”

Hemp-based packaging is becoming a popular choice with companies switching away from single-use plastics for packaging.

And with the global industrial hemp market projected to reach $27.7 billion by the end of the decade, there is huge potential for the miracle crop.

Glen Kayll, CEO of Hemp Plastics, said: “It’s very early stages for hemp, but it is fundamentally a disruptive technology, driven by massive deregulation, which continues to play out around the world.

“The big swing in North America was the CBD market, which creates large amounts of industrial hemp waste that has made this opportunity more possible.”

He said it would not take much for hemp to transition from a niche product to a mainstream one as it became more popular.

Kayll said if a retail giant such as Walmart was to use clothes hangers made from composite hemp materials, it would be the much-needed snowball effect for the hemp industry.

Cannabis and hemp companies are now searching for environmentallyfriendly options for their product packaging.

With global superstars and music sensations all migrating to the burgeoning cannabis market, we looked back at some of the most famous weed icons ever.

From music sensations to comedy legends and even sporting champions, stars from across the globe are increasingly stepping into the world of weed.

And with the US legal cannabis market set to be worth an estimated $41 billion by 2026, there’s no question as to why.

While the pool of celebrity canna-preneurs is ever-expanding, there are a few personalities who are synonymous with marijuana.

Here we take a look at a handful of those pot-culture icons and how they fit into the booming cannabis industry.

As the legal cannabis market grows to extraordinary new heights , so too does the number of celebrities who are launching their own marijuana enterprises.
CULTURE 126

Arguably one of the most famous comedy actors in the world, Seth Rogen rocketed to stoner stardom through his role in cannabis cult classic ‘Pineapple Express’. Ever the charismatic pothead, Rogen’s career has blossomed alongside a growing mainstream acceptance of cannabis; and despite going on to star in high-profile projects, he’s always maintained his love for weed.

In 2019, he unveiled his Houseplant brand – which provides cannabis flower and highend ceramic accessories – to an incredibly warm reception.

So much so, that the website crashed when Rogen announced the launch to his near 10 million Twitter followers.

Snoop Dogg and cannabis have been ‘joint’ at the hip for decades, so much so that when people think pot…they’re almost guaranteed to think of ‘Tha Doggfather’.

Through his cannabis brand ‘Leafs’ and his media company ‘Merry Jane’, the entrepreneur has cemented himself as a titan of the marijuana industry.

The world-famous rapper – real name Calvin Broadus Jr – also invests in an impressive portfolio of cannabis start-ups through his firm Casa Verde.

As one of the few who have smoked cannabis on the White House roof – and the only person to out-smoke Snoop Dogg himself - Willie Nelson’s connection to weed is legendary.

The country icon has long been associated with pot, from smoking his first joint in 1954 to launching his cannabis brand – Willie’s Reserve – more than 60 years later.

A representative for the music sensation, Elaine Schock, said: "Somewhat controversially, Willie has spent a lifetime as an outspoken supporter of cannabis.”

Paying tribute to the tradition of ‘sharing, caring and toking’, Nelson’s brand offers pre-rolls and flower – handpicked by the legend himself – to customers across Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and California.

There is arguably not a name on this list more synonymous with cannabis than that of Tommy Chong.

An early cannabis-backer in the late 60s, Chong became one of the first celebrities to launch his own marijuana brandTommy Chong’s Cannabis.

Chong has gone on the record to say that cannabis saved his life, highlighting that other people his age are ‘barely able to get off the couch’…meanwhile he spends a lot of his time on the road, in theatres and even does his own stunts.

He said: “I do everything I can to stay healthy and active; I eat right, I lift weights four times a week and I smoke my body weight in marijuana.”

DON’T SWEAT IT

As fashion designers find innovative new ways to make their products more eco-friendly, fruit skins, rose petals and even human sweat all have a part to play.

and trying to cut down on waste, the environmental impact of fast fashion is very much under the spotlight.

When it comes to buying clothes, many of us now choose to consume less, recycle more, repair and upcycle to make our clothing last longer.

And with this new focus, innovators around the world are finding new, sustainable alternatives to produce the outfits we wear.

In the same way that Impossible

Foods and Beyond Meat are reimagining meat alternatives, a growing number of startups, laboratories and biotech companies are working on alternatives to animal-based clothing materials.

The trend is also to move away from using artificial materials like nylon, polyester and rayon because of their impact on the environment.

Production methods for these materials create nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas which can

CULTURE 128

trap 310 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

We now see popular materials like leather being made from fruit skins and waste products while we can get silk from Indian rose bush petals rather than silkworms.

Soy from tofu products can be broken down to a pulp to make plant-based wool that is completely machine washable.

However, it’s not just the developers and consumers

doing their bit for a sustainable clothing industry.

In recent months we have seen some of the biggest names in fashion look to use these new materials for some of their most popular items of clothing.

Adidas redesigned their Stan Smith shoes using mushroombased mycelium leather, while Nike has partnered up with Newlight, a start-up that converts harmful emissions to carbon-negative leather.

Outdoor adventure brand The

North Face is making a winter jacket with Spiber, a Japanese biotech company that creates a silk alternative made from DNA replications of spider silk.

It is not just the global brands that are establishing their links to sustainable fashion, as smaller independent brands are doing their part too.

Italian brand Brutus, known for its handcrafted designer leather jackets, has started to practice ‘algalizing’ which uses natural algae as a dye for their iconic

129

products.

Pangaia, which holds a spot on the racks at Selfridges, developed a material called “FLWRDWN,’ a feather alternative made from wildflowers, that lines the inside of their coats.

The gender-free collection from Riley Studio features a puffer jacket made from recycled nylon and filled with recycled polyester from plastic bottles in

landfill.

One of the strangest developments is a lab process where the sweat molecules from worn clothing, such as socks or vests, can be converted into crystals.

Alice Potts, a graduate from the Royal College of London is a sustainable material innovator who has found a way to grow crystals from sweat.

Whether they are coated in a spread or even just plain, I can’t seem to keep my hands off them…and this offering from Clearspring was no different.

After I quickly chewed my way through the decentsized packet of crispy rice cakes, I genuinely found myself sad that I didn’t have more.

But not to worry, because at £1.49 per packet and just 27 calories per cake, these buckwheat and

wholegrain snacks are kind on your wallet and your figure.

I can honestly say that these were a pleasure to try and I will likely be grabbing myself a few more packets in the near future… and to all those rice cake fans out there, I recommend you do too.

The Gut Stuff Good Fibrations

SNACK BARS

As the Gut Stuff team will tell you, a majority of people don’t get enough fibre…and I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m one of them.

Finding the time to keep up a perfect diet is growing increasingly difficult and it can be hard to know exactly what you need to eat.

But with the help of the ‘Good Fibrations’ range you can at least cover one of the main bases, with each snack bar boasting a third of your daily recommended fibre intake (10g).

But how do the flavours hold up?

Peanut Butter

Without a doubt this was my favourite flavour of the bunch, with peanut butter being one of my all-time top tastes.

The smooth bar had just the right intensity of peanut butter flavour, with some lesser brands and products often making their bars far too overwhelming.

It was probably a good thing that I only had one of these to test, as I could have easily burned through a number of these in one sitting – which is certainly not a wise thing to do.

Apple & Cinnamon

I’m never really the kind of person to go for a cinnamon flavour…but this offering from the Gut Stuff team managed to win me over.

On first bite I was quite sceptical as to whether this one would be a win for me, but as I worked through the bar, I was able to appreciate the delicate balance between the apple and the cinnamon notes.

While this one certainly isn’t my favourite, I can say that I’d be happy to try it again if the opportunity presented itself.

Raspberry & Coconut

Another winner for me, this Good Fibrations bar managed to capture everything I love about the coconut flavour.

Always partial to a bounty bar – I know right – and even coconut ice cream, it was nice to find a healthier alternative that could stave off my coconut cravings.

And when you throw the sweet and juicy power of raspberry into the mix…this is definitely a flavour combo worth trying.

Cocoa & Hazelnut

I happened to be with my partner when I gave this bar a try and – as I expected – her ears pricked up when she heard me opening this cocoa and hazelnut-infused delight.

A brilliant pairing of two wellknown flavours, I can certainly see how this bar would be a favourite amongst fans.

And I can honestly say that both my partner and I are looking forward to the next time we can get our hands on a couple of these.

Every time I think to myself ‘that’s it, I’ve seen every kind of CBD-infused product out there’, something new and interesting comes along to prove me wrong.

Relax

Made for when your body ‘is at nine percent’, the Relax pack from cbme is designed to help people unwind and recharge.

These packs of dried papaya are bursting with CBD, CBG, magnesium and hops extract to aid rest.

They also contain 5-HTP, which helps your body to produce serotonin and can encourage sleep.

I would use the Relax pack in the evening as I was getting ready for bed to help me unwind and settle in for a night of relaxation.

Relieve

Although I’m not typically an apricot fan – and rarely one to choose dried apricot – the Relieve pack from cbme managed to win me over.

The blend of CBD, fruit and turmeric root is designed to help recovery and recuperation and I can honestly say that it was a welcome addition to my roster of favoured CBD products.

Karen Eats

SWEET N’ HEAT NUTS AND CINNAMON SPICE NUTS

I always find myself searching the cupboards at home for a little pick-me-up after work most evenings…and admittedly I’ll normally settle for something unhealthy.

That is until I tried the ‘Sweet N’ Heat’ and ‘Cinnamon Spice’ flavoured nuts packets from Karen Eats.

Not only are the nuts 100 percent natural, but there are also no additives - or ‘no nasties’ as the brand likes to say – making them a fantastic snack for those looking for healthier and organic treats.

Both flavours of Karen Eats packs are incredibly moreish, low in sugar and high in protein, leaving you feeling energised and fulfilled without that typical post-snack guilt.

Cinnamon Spice

If you’re looking for something with a little kick the Cinnamon Spice mix may be the one for you. Boasting a tasty mix of roasted pecans and almonds, these nuts have been coated in a delicious spice mix that you simply can’t put down.

This packet was definitely the stand flavour of the two for me and I will certainly be on the hunt for more.

Sweet N’ Heat

Providing the perfect blend of sweet, salty and spicy, the Sweet N’ Heat bag is great for those who like a little bit of everything when snacking.

And with the gorgeous mix of caramelised cashews and almonds, this offering from Karen Eats delivers a gentle kick of heat which leaves you with a hint of sweetness.

Creative Nature

SUPER SALTED CARAMEL GNAWBLES

This really is a fantastic snack for all. The ‘Super Salted Caramel Gnawbles’ are gluten, dairy, wheat and nut-free, making them the perfect goody for anyone with specific dietary requirements.

The crispy chocolate snack contains 39 percent less sugar than the market-leading product in the sector, making it a better option for those looking to limit their sugar intake.

Creative Nature says this product, like everything in its range, is free from the top 14 most common allergens, which will tick another box for many.

This snack is also packed with protein due to the small pea nuggets which can be found inside a delicious layer of dark chocolate.

The salted caramel gnawbles live up to their name as the salty taste is complemented by the dark chocolate, leaving you wanting more of this delicious snack.

Available in share bags and smaller snack packs, gnawbles are ideal to share or have on your own.

Brave Roasted Chickpeas

DARK CHOC

If so, the new lifestyle conscious company Brave has a snack that should really appeal to you.

The brand’s Dark Chocolate Roasted Chickpea is the newest flavour in the chickpea range and certainly did not disappoint.

Not only was the indulgent chocolate coating the perfect option to keep my sweet tooth at bay…but it also doesn’t hurt that these chickpeas contain 50 percent less sugar than other alternatives.

This delightfully chocolaty snack also boasts four grams of protein per pack - making it a brilliant post-workout treat – and four grams of fibre for

improved gut health.

I’m also a fan of the sustainability of this product, with the heathier ingredients taking away the guilt of snacking and the brand’s mission to provide snacks that are good for the planet making me feel better about my impact on the environment.

All in all, this dark chocolate offering from Brave is perfect for something to eat while on the go, keeping you fuelled throughout the day…all while giving you a deliciously sweet kick.

Ever thought of needing a little snack when on the go or at work? Then look no further than the incredible Creative Nature.

I’ve been using Zendium for almost a year now and I have to say I’m a huge advocate for this toothpaste, recommending it to anyone and everyone who will listen.

Not only does it boast desirable prebiotic benefits, but it also contains more gentle foaming agents than other products, making for an improved toothcare routine.

In all honesty, this did take a little while to get used to, but after using the toothpaste for some time, I find it feels more natural and felt kinder to my

MADAGASCAN VANILLA, PEANUT AND DARK CHOCOLATE BAR

Reviewed

If there are three flavours I enjoy in this world, they would be vanilla, peanut and – you guessed it – chocolate…and this bar from Perkier hits all three perfectly. However, the wonderfully blended snack is not only packed with great flavour, but also billions of probiotics and prebiotics to help keep your gut in top form.

And at less than 160 calories per bar, what’s not to love about this tasty vanilla, peanut and dark chocolate-infused snack?

The bar is especially great for those who spend a lot of time on the go, in the office or away from home as it offers a host of hard to come by benefits and nutrients that you could otherwise miss.

R3 CBD

MUSCLE AND JOINT CREAM, CBD HEAT BALM AND FRESH MINT CBD SPRAY

As someone who likes to stay fairly active – and has a number of underlying sports injuries –protecting my body and helping it recuperate is vital.

So, when I was asked if I wanted to try these products from R3 CBD, I jumped on the opportunity.

Between the heat balm, the mint spray and the muscle and joint cream, there was plenty on offer to help soothe any aches and aid my recovery.

Not to mention that each package had a fairly generous serving, meaning there was plenty of balm, cream and spray to keep me going for quite a while.

Muscle and Joint Cream

This was the product I used the most, with the refreshingly chilling muscle and joint cream helping to alleviate those post-workout pains. I generally avoid any heavy cardio as I have a bad knee that can sometimes make sustained running and cycling a daunting challenge.

However, with this CBD cream in my arsenal, I felt like I was better able to manage any soreness and joint trouble.

Heat Balm

First things first, I absolutely love the soothing smell of this product, so this was already a real treat before I even considered the potential benefits to my body.

One of the main features in my concoction of injuries is long-standing

damage to one of my shoulders that can occasionally limit mobility and give me some real grief.

But with the gentle warming power of this heat balm, I felt I was able to achieve a better range of motion on those bad days and didn’t feel that stiff joints were getting in the way of my workout.

Mint Spray

I’m never normally one to go for CBD sprays and, in fact, this was my first time using one consistently for a period of time – while of course staying within the daily recommended guidelines.

But I must say that this refreshingly minty offering from R3 CBD was a welcome addition to my wellness and recovery toolkit.

Not to mention the taste, which appealed to my love of mint and was a great flavour to balance out the CBD.

Supernova Living

With the help of Supernova, a vegan protein powder, I have felt that my stress levels are kept supressed and my energy is balanced throughout the day.

I find consuming this supplement drink in the morning and then drinking lots of water throughout the day gives me what I need to get by.

This powder mixes very well in the blender with water, much more effectively than some other

protein powders that are on the market.

The taste is okay, with chocolate as the main initial flavour, leaving an enjoyable aftertaste.

Although I haven't felt a massive surge of energy after I have consumed Supernova, I do feel much more mellowed out and well-balanced.

Zooki Vitamin D

to stay on-top of their recommended vitamin intake.

However, while sunny weather is in short supply and getting that daily dose of Vitamin D is extremely difficult…it’s still possible.

The Mixed Berry pack from YourZooki has now given me no excuse to get those vital vitamins.

The supplement pack has vitamin D3 + K2, which can be greatly beneficial for muscle functionality, immune systems and even bone health.

They are also a brilliant alternative for those who hate swallowing tablets and capsules, but still want

The mixed berry blend also offered a smooth and balanced taste, steering clear of those off-putting, over-powering and artificial tastes that can turn people away from trying supplements.

Not to mention the convenient size of the YourZooki sachets, which makes them simple to take to work or have on the go.

All in all, I found that this supplement was a great and easy way to access crucial vitamin D during those overcast winter days or long-days in the office.

We all know life can get pretty stressful at times, so for men having a helping hand to combat this would be welcomed with open arms.
As the UK is always unpredictable at best, trying to catch some rays can often be a near-herculean

Nuasan Body Products

When I came into the office one Monday I was intrigued to learn that these body products from Nuasan had been delivered.

They arrived in clean, well-designed boxes, that looked very professional.

I must say, all of the products that were sent to me by Nuasan have been fantastic and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using them all.

The first from the bumper package I received was the ‘Post Exercise Care Kit’.

Consisting of their ‘Active Body Wash’ and ‘Active Body Moisturiser’ the pair were perfect after I had been out for a run.

Any fear I had of developing some aches and pains after going out was soon relived after using the pair together when I showered, with both magnesium and arnica focusing on my tired muscles.

The second product was the ‘Active CBD Muscle Gel’ which was packed with 500mg of max strength CBD and other plant extracts to relax muscles and stiff joints.

For me, this was a life saver in the cold weather, with my hands being exposed to the harsh environment, a generous ball of the cream rubbed into the knuckle area did absolute wonders.

And lastly in the box, I found the 100 percent plantbased, biodegradable ‘Active Body Wipes’.

I found these were perfect for when my partner and I were on-the-go for the day, feeling a little less fresh than we probably would like to.

With the products’ bamboo and macro-algae extracts and pH control, we both just opened one of the individually packaged wipes and felt fresh instantly.

After testing the Nuasan products, I would advise anyone looking for a complete body, skin and muscle care kit, to look no further.

After testing out the Happy Hemper subscription box, I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for affordable CBD.

Happy Hemper sent over their monthly subscription box for me to take a look at and boy was I surprised with what I got!

Inside the subscription box, I received a sun cream, an oil, a lip balm and some dried fruit…all CBD infused of course.

Happy Hemper provide its consumers with a variety of subscription boxes to accommodate all budgets, also giving you the choice of a one-time purchase or a month-to-month subscription.

After selecting the best suited gift box for you or a loved one, you can expect it to arrive within three to five working days.

First, the sun cream sent over from the very reputable CBPLUS. Although we have not been blessed with glorious sunshine like many starts to a British year, the cream has still been a great moisturiser.

Secondly was the oil from ISO CBD. In the past I have tried a lot of ‘natural’ flavoured CBD oils and tinctures all of which are sometimes hit and miss.

However, this one was clean tasting and delivered what I wanted it too with 2,000mg packed inside the bottle.

The lip balm from Sweet Pink has been so helpful as I do a lot of walking on my commute to work and the cold wind can be harsh on my lips. But after just a few days using the lemongrass and turmeric balm I noted that I didn’t have to fear of developing those sore lips.

Finally, my favourite from the subscription box, the dried cannabidiol-infused pineapple from cbme was a real treat.
