Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the land of CBD LIVE at VOXPO! Where anything is possible.

It doesn’t matter what you wear or what time you show up at. You don’t need an expo pass, you don’t even need to pay to register. Forget travel and accommodation fees or lugging the contents of an exhibition stand in tow. We created the CBD LIVE at VOXPO concept to conveniently reunite the legal cannabis community after what has been a tumultuous five months.

No fuss, no mess, no unnecessary costs. Instead we have created a growing space of unlimited opportunities. Whether you are in a suit, yoga leggings or pyjamas, you are most welcome to what promises to be an action packed three-day online event.

Anything goes when you host an event like this. Log in from the office, your WFH space or even your bed (especially if you’re joining us on Sunday morning!) We’re just glad to have you on board with what is our first largescale event at The CANNAVIST.

This weekend marks the first of four virtual expos we have planned for the coming year. That’s right, not just one trade show, we’re talking three-day live events, four times a year between now and July 2021. We’ll be adjusting time zones and targeting regions as we go, but more on that later in this brochure.

The idea for this came about when suddenly, every event we were signed up to as a media partner just ceased

travel to or exhibit at, and this was to the detriment of the industry as a whole. So many great events, largely education based, have suffered due to COVID-19 and sadly some may never return.

What does this mean for consumers, those most curious about CBD and medical cannabis? It narrows their learning opportunities and results in a reliance forming on Dr Internet, which we all know isn’t the best place to start. Some events will return defiantly next year and we will be more than ready when that happens! In the meantime, we invite you to join us as we traverse the virtual world and gather as one global cannabis community to teach, eradicate stigma and most importantly learn from one another. Namaste!

CBD LIVE AT VOXPO PRESENTS THREE DAYS OF EDUCATION, PASSION AND OPPORTUNITIES.

Here’s a taste of what to expect.

EDUCATION

Learning around CBD and medical cannabis depends on science and communication. At The CANNAVIST, it’s our goal to put education first, to work towards normalising CBD and the medical components of cannabis, which are very much a taboo still in 2020.

At CBD LIVE, we endeavour to bring you the science of cannabis in a way in which you can easily understand. For this, our first virtual event, we have gathered over 30 of the most knowledgeable minds on CBD and cannabinoid research, policy and medicine. Our globally renowned experts will guide you over the weekend to further your learning. Whether you are interested in CBD for personal use, or how the medical cannabis system

works. Maybe you’d like to know what the chances of cannabis legalisation are in the UK or how to successfully market a CBD product. Whatever your question, the CBD LIVE Auditorium is your first port of call for answers.

Our schedule is packed with three days of content from our range of key speakers. That’s three whole days of information for you to absorb and take away.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it online to every single talk or presentation, the auditorium isn’t going anywhere. You can log in the following day, the next week or month and all of the content will still be there. Notepads at the ready!

PASSION

The CBD and medical cannabis community in the UK is one of the most passionate groups we have ever come across. From support to lobbying to fundraising for medical cannabis prescriptions, we believe the legal cannabis community represents the best of humanity. It’s grown to change minds and governments and has guided conventional medical professionals in showing them why there is a need for a change of perspective on plant medicine. It has created a movement which has changed the laws in both the UK and Ireland. That’s why we’ve asked experts from the following organisations to come on board and use VOXPO as a platform to spread the facts on legal cannabis, and ultimately help prevent the spread of further stigma. We are delighted to have the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis and the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry as our official UK education partners to CBD LIVE. We’re equally proud to have US trade body, the CBD & Cannabinoid Industry Association as our US education partner. We have also linked up with expert market analysts at CBD-Intel, whose passion for the industry rings true in each and every presentation. Women Empowered in Cannabis is another unstoppable force in this community and is making opportunities for women to succeed in the cannabis space as we speak. London Canna Group, the creators of the Europe Canna Expo, which sadly had to divert its course to 2021, are also on board for CBD LIVE as a media partner and will also contribute to the auditorium.

OPPORTUNITIES

The VOXPO platform was created to support two niche industries in their time of need. That’s no exaggeration of the facts. For both the CBD and vape industries, the pandemic presented a scenario of sink or swim and unfortunately, many firms in both sectors will not return to operations. As your hosts, it is our mission to help this industry rediscover its mojo, to revitalise networking as if we were face-to-face at a physical expo, and to create a space where profitable opportunities can be made.

According to the Office for National Statistics, four out of five British businesses which have continued to trade

despite the pandemic have furloughed a percentage of their workforce. Unemployment rates across the UK are predicted to surge as the furlough scheme is wound up, and experts warn this could contribute to as many as 3.5 million Brits being unemployed by the end of the year. At the same time, CBD use and interest has skyrocketed in recent months as the public look for natural methods of easing anxiety. Eight million adults in the UK (equivalent to 15% of the population) purchased CBD products in the first half of the year, exceeding £150 million in retail value. All previous trajectories for this period have been smashed, with the British market now set to be valued at £450 million, an increase of 50% growth compared to £300 million in 2019.

Why does this matter to us? We believe platforms like VOXPO can give rise to new business opportunities, create new revenue ideas, and help curate a new age register of consumer interest in CBD. Combined, these three factors may result in companies making the ultimate comeback from corona times. As brands take in more revenue, they can begin to redevelop their workforce by investing in people in what is already a burgeoning industry. We invite all business owners and representatives to get talking, make the first move, treat this weekend as a fresh start. Don’t forget to check out our business lounge which is LinkedIn integrated.

FLY AWAY WITH VOXPO AIRWAYS

WELCOME TO CBD LIVE

Thank you for logging on to the only virtual destination for CBD this summer.

Travel and public health restrictions have led to pretty much every CBD and medical cannabis event being cancelled since March. And while that was of course necessary in the fight against COVID-19, it’s left all of these gaps in learning, and in networking. The conversations we were having at CBD parties, workshops and wellness events haven’t been happening. Meanwhile, we’ve all been bound to the confines of our borders.

At The CANNAVIST we have joined forces with our sister publication Vapouround to present this new virtual learning platform, VOXPO.

VOXPO is an exhibition house which will be available online 24/7, 365 days a year.

CBD LIVE at VOXPO offers an expo complete with the educational resources you’ve been lacking over the lockdown period.

If you are interested in dipping your toe into the ocean of legal cannabis products that are out there, or maybe you fancy starting your own CBD business from home, you’ll find everything you’ve been looking for over the past few months at CBD LIVE.

This virtual expo and conference is open to everyone, all around the world, and it’s totally free to register. Now that you’re here, tell a friend to go to voxpo-event.com and click the big ‘Register’ button they too will be on their way to VOXPO. Plus they could win £1,000 worth of CBD products!

HOW IS VOXPO DIFFERENT TO OTHER VIRTUAL EVENTS?

For a start, there is no registration fee. That’s right, attendance is free. With other online events, the technical capabilities for registered users and exhibitors are quite limited. Here at VOXPO visitors, speakers and exhibitors have every opportunity to engage. You can start a conversation in real time via our live Q&A sessions in the auditorium, our live

18

chat functionality on booths and in our LinkedIn integrated lounge for networking. And on the days that we don’t have a live event running, all of these functions will still be working, so you can drop someone a line at any time.

WHO IS VOXPO FOR?

The beauty about a virtual expo is that there are (virtually!) no limits to the benefits. VOXPO is a B2B and B2C event, offering consumers an insight into the world of CBD that they will not get anywhere else this year, due to the cancellation of physical events caused by the coronavirus. Businesses can make up for time lost over the past few months by reconnecting with contacts and making new connections, closing deals and marketing new opportunities to people around the world, all from the base of a single office desk or work-from-home set up. Education plays a key role at VOXPO, so advocates, experts and enthusiasts are also lined up to participate.

WHO IS EXHIBITING?

We have 100+ exhibitors confirmed for this, the debut event, with the biggest names across the CBD and vape industries on board from get go. We’ve been adding to our exhibitors list every day in the run up to ths weekend and we are delighted to also have great media and education partners on board too! From hemp growers to beauty brands to

manufacturers to laboratories to cannabis associations, there is no limit to the kind of businesses you can browse at VOXPO.

CAN I INTERACT WITH OTHERS IN REAL TIME?

Yes — on live days (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) you will be able to see questions from visitors and respond to them in real time. You may engage in conversations via telephone, messaging, or video conferencing.

ARE THERE ANY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES?

Yes — education is one of the key factors taken into account by us. We are story tellers at our core. Delve into the auditorium where you will find hours of video content from CBD LIVE contributors, and our expert education partners.

CAN I ACCESS VOXPO ON MY PHONE OR TABLET?

Yes — you can access the platform from anywhere while on the go, as long as you have a good internet connection.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO EXHIBIT?

We have a number of exhibitor packages available for our next three events, taking place in the next 12 months. If you would like to get involved, email info@voxpo-event. com and a member of the team can tell you more.

MEET THE EXHIBITORS

At Huna Labs , we discovered CBD when a close family member came up against serious health challenges in 2017. We quickly realised that high-strength, natural CBD was difficult to find. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands and produce our very own high-quality, 100% natural CBD. Our exceptional range of products includes a variety of different strength oils (up to 26% potency), as well topicals, patches, proteins and capsules.

After witnessing the power of plants first-hand, Boaz travelled the world gaining a wealth of first-hand ethnobotanical knowledge about all types of plants. After completing his training in a variety of natural therapy methods, he started formulating remedies for both patients and therapists. Driven by a belief in the importance of respecting and connecting with nature, Boaz makes all of his remedies using plants he has foraged according to season, location, moon cycles, and local traditions.

“Natural therapy by necessity must be holistic, and it looks at the person as a whole, from his/her relation to him/her self all the way to the environment.”

“Self-help is key to health but changing our lives and habits to a healthier lifestyle is hard, and we all could use some help.”

Passionate about plant-based remedies, holistic health specialists Oren & Boaz join the editor of The CANNAVIST in discussing how CBD and medical cannabis may be beneficial in managing anxiety, sleep, depression and stress.

Dr Elisabeth Philipps is a neuroscientist and is one of the UK’s leading experts in hemp, phytocannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system. She speaks nationally about CBD and the ECS at conferences and clinical education events and provides expert opinion and content for the national press, specialist healthcare publications and health companies. WHEN THE FUNDRAISING ENDS…

Lockdown has had a huge impact on millions of lives around the country. Millions of pounds have been raised in tear-jerking stories that have captured the heart of the nation.

WORLD’S FIRST CANNABIS TRIAL INVOLVING A BABY BEGINS IN LONDON

White House Submissions

In late July, FDA officials submitted a draft CBD enforcement paper to the White House, signalling that CBD regulation may be on the horizon after lengthy anticipation. The CANNAVIST understands the US FDA Cannabidiol Enforcement Policy Draft Guidance for Industry was received by the White House Office of Management and Budget for consideration. That office must now take the draft proposal under consideration, examine it and make a recommendation for approval. If approved, the US CBD market could see steps to regulation revealed in the very near future. FDA officials have been busy working on cannabis in recent months as in the days leading up to this CBD submission, another draft was submitted to the White House, this time pertaining to clinical research where cannabis-derived drugs are concerned.

Three tiers

The Association for the Cannabinoid Industry (ACI) recently launched a safety certification initiative as it readies members for the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) novel foods deadline. The ACI certification programme provides a three-tiered route towards compliance, starting with an audit and ending with full novel foods authorisation. The ACI believes the process will ‘bring a level of trust to the industry that until now has been lacking.’ ACI Pharmacy Lead, Dr Andy Yates, says consumer confidence in CBD is lacking: “It’s been clear that retailers and consumers don’t have complete faith in CBD products that are currently for sale in the UK. The ACI certification is a simple way for retailers and consumers to be sure that the CBD products they are stocking or buying are complying with or working towards all of the relevant regulations.”

Mystery Shopper?

Uruguay, the first country to legalise cannabis, has been exporting what are reportedly some of the largest ever transatlantic shipments of cannabis flower to at least one mystery buyer in Europe. The South American nation legalised cannabis in 2013. At the end of 2019, a 1,000kg shipment of high-THC cannabis flower was legally exported to Portugal. In May, a further 1.5 metric tons (1,500kg) of the flower was shipped, according to customs documentation view by MJ Biz Daily.

Israel to reform cannabis laws

The Israeli government has passed a bill which could effectively decriminalise the possession of up to 50g of cannabis and the consumption up to 15g for over 21s. The Times of Israel reports that the leaders of the two biggest political parties and the police minister have backed the reform. In 2017, cannabis was partially decriminalised in the country and since then police are said to have eased enforcement of cannabis arrests for recreational use.

That’s a no then

The Food Standards Agency says there are no plans to extend the March 31, 2021 deadline for CBD companies to submit novel food applications. It was thought that an extension may be reasonable, given the country-wide effects of COVID-19 lockdown.

Hollywood heavyweight Clint Eastwood is suing three CBD companies, alleging they each created or distributed content falsely claiming he was endorsing their products, and that he had his own CBD line. Eastwood, 90, has no part in the manufacturing, or sale of CBD, according to the LA-filed law suit.

The medical cannabis economy

We often hear talk about the economic benefits of legalising cannabis, especially in the production sector. A recently published Grand View report estimated that the global legal cannabis market would be worth €73.6bn by 2027. Medical cannabis reportedly accounted for 71% of the legal cannabis market revenue in 2019.

GW Pharma envisages a strong end to 2020

Medical cannabis makers GW Pharma reportedly lost $8 million at the end of the first quarter but netted $311.3 million in sales at the end of last year. GW manufactures Epidyolex, which is one of two medical cannabis solutions approved for the NHS. CEO Justin Gover commented: “In this current environment caused by COVID-19, we have been able to support the epilepsy community remotely and maintain production of Epidyolex, while taking necessary steps to maintain the wellbeing of our employees. Looking ahead, GW is well placed to emerge strongly from the COVID-19 crisis with significant growth prospects for Epidyolex in the US and Europe, important pipeline clinical trials ready to execute, a strong balance sheet, and an unparalleled leading position in cannabinoid science.” The biopharmaceutical giant, which maintains a base in the UK, has additional cannabinoid product candidates in phase two trials for autism and schizophrenia.

Will Biden legalise cannabis?

The Democratic nominee for presidency in the US is said to be considering some of his former running mate Bernie Sanders’ progressive policy suggestions as he prepares to go head-to-head with Trump in the latter section of the year. An early draft of the Democratic Party platform which leaked in July hints at baby steps being made by the progressive arm of the party but falls short when it comes to endorsing legalisation of cannabis, according to Politico.

The New Oil Boom

In the years to come, the popularity of tinctures is set to mushroom rapidly, on account of these products being the most widely used for medical purposes. That’s according to a new report from Research and Markets which was published by Global Newswire in July. The market analytics store puts Aphria, Isodiol International, CV Sciences, Canopy Growth Corporation, Aurora Cannabis, Endoca, Tilray, CBDfx, Folium Biosciences, and Gaia Botanicals as the most dominant companies leading the way when it comes to oils.

Push & Pull

Attitudes towards hemp and CBD in the US are complex to say the least, with FDA regulation still a welcome possibility. In June, the state of Louisiana introduced penalties for the possession and sale of all smokable hemp products and all CBD-infused food and beverages (including alcohol). The move came as the state authorities say it cannot endorse such products for sale or consumption until there are FDA guidelines for manufacturers to adhere to. Meanwhile lobbyists from several health and consumer advocacy groups have written to US Congress in an appeal, “to reject any attempts to force federal regulators” to legalise CBD. Hemp Today reports that the campaigners agree Congress is, “not the right evaluator of the safety of consumer products” amid fears of representatives and senators being influenced by “well-funded profiteers.”

Delegates for Consumer Reports, The Public Health Institute, Consumer Federation of America, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest all reportedly signed the letter. Meanwhile in Nevada, thousands of cannabis convictions handed down prior to 2017 have been pardoned by the state’s governor.

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH EU

Opinion by The Editor

Across the Atlantic in Washington DC where in mid-July the White House received two cannabis-related submissions from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

One draft proposes guidance for clinical research on cannabis in the guise of a document called: Quality Considerations for Clinical Research Guidance for Industry. The other outlines proposed steps for enforcement for CBD products on sale in the US market space. FDA officials are understood to have submitted The Cannabidiol Enforcement Policy Draft Guidance for Industry to the White House Office of Management and Budget. This department must approve the proposal before it can go any further. It’s not yet known what the contents of this proposal set out, however it is hoped this move could mean clarity may finally be on the horizon for the US CBD space where things like labelling and a recommended daily intake are concerned. Within the same week, the European Commission announced it was considering the view that CBD may be more in line with narcotics than previously thought in a surprising move. A novel viewpoint to say the least, when one ponders the evidence and safety profile of the trending cannabinoid.

The Commission has paused novel food applications for now, the main talking point across the British and European industries for the past 18 months. To sum it up for anyone unfamiliar with this process, the Novel Food Regulations are a set of guidelines which depict what is and isn’t approved for the European food chain. The regulation of CBD as a novel food would see all consumable CBD products such as tinctures, gummies, capsules and more placed under food safety rules.

This new perspective, it’s thought, comes from a consideration of enforcing a labelling requirement which jumps from the CBD-is-a-food category to the ingredient being instead related to narcotics or psychotropics, in what could be a major step backwards for the CBD sector.

HERE’S WHERE IT GETS MORE COMPLICATED. THE MONEY.

So far, approximately 50 CBD companies have filed novel food applications and paid a sizeable fee to do so. Some have told me they have paid six figures per application, all in a bid to comply with the previous EU recommendation. The CANNAVIST has contacted the European Food Safety Authority to ask if such funds may be refunded in the future if CBD is in fact removed from the novel foods database. No response was received by the time of publication. EU food regulations, like many of the other EU pathways, can vary in levels of enforcement and interpretation among member states, which can lead to a patchwork pattern

62

forming across the continent. Naturally, the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) has a lot to say on this matter. When the news was announced, the board of farmers, producers and processors released a statement titled: ‘The European Commission about to kill the hemp sector’.

The EIHA went on to say:

“The executive body of the European Union froze all applications of hemp extracts and natural cannabinoids under Novel Food regulation, considering them to be drugs. If confirmed, this position is likely to strike the final blow to the sector and deprive farmers from a low maintenance and profitable rotation crop with the potential to bringing environmental benefits. Cannabidiol would stay on the market but only in its synthetic form.”

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE BLOC?

If CBD is labelled as a narcotic rather than a novel food, the European sector will be at risk. Large companies, particularly drug manufacturers, will be the sole beneficiaries where any natural extract is concerned. Small companies, start-ups and self-run operations, the cornerstone of the industry, will be under threat and many will be forced to close. Synthetic CBD will survive, but is that really what people want? A synthetic version of a readily available natural plant extract? The marketing alone would surely suffer.

The EU stance on narcotics, or controlled substances, adheres to the UN Convention system on narcotics and psychotropics. Both lists typically schedule drugs on three keys: a basis of risk, likelihood for abuse and likelihood of addiction. Therein lies the crucial word, ‘drugs’.

In a time where cannabis itself is becoming more tolerable, less stigmatised and having carved out a decriminalised corner of the health and wellness sector, its so far uncontrolled extract faces yet another roadblock on the journey to success.

WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE CBD IN THE UK?

Casting all politics aside, Brexit may be the saviour to the already burgeoning British CBD sector. As we come to the end of the transition period and the UK gears up to formally leave the EU, the Food Standards Agency will welcome compliant products to the market from April 1 next year.

The FSA has said CBD will not be classified as a narcotic in the UK meaning the industry here shouldn’t feel a negative impact from whatever the EU decides. The FSA will process novel food applications from January. In a response to a press request from The CANNAVIST a spokesperson for the authority said:

“The FSA will be formally accepting novel food applications from January 2021, after the Transition Period ends. The EC remains the route for formal submissions until that time. Narcotics are overseen by national legislation and the FSA’s view is consistent with the Home Office in that CBD extracts themselves are not considered narcotics. If a product is classified as a narcotic it would not be subject to novel food regulations.”

Novel food authorisation applications need to demonstrate that the CBD product in question is not subject to control under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, according to the FSA. If a CBD product is found to contain THC (or another controlled cannabinoid) it is highly likely that the product would be controlled at which point the Home Office may become involved. Further guidance is available from the Home Office factsheet “Cannabis, CBD and other cannabinoids”.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE HELP AVAILABLE TO CBD FIRMS IN THE UK HIT BY COVID-19

Companies in the UK which are struggling and in need of assistance due to lockdown rules in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic have several options to choose from, depending on their size and their needs. These include deferring VAT payments until March 31 2021, and claiming back sick pay.

The biggest scheme introduced by the UK is the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

All employers are eligible for this scheme, which gives furloughed employees 80% of their salary, up to £2,500 a month. It only covers employees who are paid through the UK’s pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) tax system and employees must have been on the payroll on February 28. The programme was recently extended to last until the end of October.

Small and medium-sized companies which have been affected by the pandemic can apply for a Coronavirus Business Interruption loan.

Companies with a turnover of less than £45m who can demonstrate that they have been adversely affected by COVID-19 can receive loans and other financing, up to £5m. The government will guarantee 80% of the loan to the lender and will pay any interest and fees for the first 12 months.

A similar loan scheme is in place for companies with a turnover of more than £45m. At present these businesses may receive up to £25m (for turnover of £45m-£250m) or £50m (for turnover above £250m) in loans and financing.

As of May, the scheme has allowed companies to borrow up to 25% of turnover, up to a maximum of £200m, with banks underwriting 20% of the loan and the government

66

providing the remaining 80%. Dividend payouts will be prohibited as a condition of borrowing, though certain bonuses will still be permitted.

Smaller companies can also apply for a Bounce Back Loan

This is available between £2,000 and up to 25% of turnover, up to a maximum loan of £50,000, provided businesses can prove they have lost income due to COVID-19. The government guarantees 100% of the loan and there are no fees or interest for the first 12 months. After the first year, the interest rate will be 2.5%.

The Future Fund

The most recent scheme introduced by the British Government is the Future Fund. This allows start-ups which had raised at least £250,000 before the COVID-19 shutdown to receive up to £5m in funding from the government, provided a third party is willing to invest in the company. The scheme is aimed at companies that have not been able to benefit from other government relief measures and are in early stage development.

At present there are no EU-wide schemes to help businesses at a local level, although many EU countries have introduced their own economic relief packages, such as loan guarantees for businesses, deferment of taxes, state-backed aid, and other measures.

CAN HEMP HELP GET THE ECONOMY GOING POST-LOCKDOWN?

The British Government has floated the possibility of adopting a ‘green recovery’ plan to help get the economy moving post-lockdown. This, it’s thought, could also help the country achieve its zero-carbon emissions target. How can hemp help?

Lockdown has had a positive effect on the environment as its the longest period since the industrial revolution during which no coal has been burned.

In July, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced details of the second phase of recovery focused on jobs. A further rebuilding phase is due to be rolled out later in the year. While the government hasn’t released details of what a green recovery plan might look like, hemp could almost certainly play a role.

So, setting CBD aside, how else can hemp be put to work in other sectors?

PLASTIC

Plastic pollution is currently one of the biggest environmental problems as our oceans are starting to fill up with micro particles, which are absorbed by fish, birds and animals, subsequently entering the food chain. Hemp can be used to make a variety of biodegradable items.

Once fibres have been removed from hemp stems, what remains is 77% cellulose, which is a light source that could replace petrochemical plastics. According to a Zion Market Research report, the global hemp packaging industry could reach $20 billion by 2025.

BIOACCUMULATION

One of hemp’s most beneficial attributes is its ability to absorb carbon dioxide, which is one of the key causes of climate change.

Hemp can absorb up to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare which makes it an extremely fast converter. It absorbs more of the compound per hectare than any other crop or commercial forestry.

The plant consumes four times more CO2 than trees and it has a short growth cycle of just 12 to 14 weeks.

74

HEMPCRETE

Hempcrete is a mixture of natural materials, lime and hemp and it could replace concrete. Hempcrete requires very little water in comparison to traditional concrete. It is also much more lightweight, with excellent thermal properties.

Hempcrete can be used to build, restore or renovate any type of building, making it an extremely versatile material. The industrial hemp industry is set to increase in worth from $4.6 billion to $26.6 billion by 2025 as legalisation continues, according to Markets and Markets researchers.

BIOMASS FUELS

Biomass fuel is an alternative to coal, oil and gas. The hemp plant is rich in cellulose and fibre that can be used in the production of fuel and energy.

The auto fuel derived from the biomass can be converted into methanol or ethanol and hemp seed oil can be used in the manufacturing of petrol.

HEMP FOODS

There are many nutritional benefits to be found in hemp. It’s an excellent form of plant-based protein and is suitable for vegans, plus it contains a large amount of essential amino acids that we do not produce in our own bodies. Hemp seeds can be added to yogurts, soups or salads but there are also hemp milks, oils and cooking pastes on the shelves of many supermarket chains, some of which also contain CBD for an extra health benefit.

Embracing hemp biomass fuel would reduce our dependency on fossil fuels while also releasing less CO 2 into the atmosphere. It is a greener and cleaner alternative. The

global hemp packaging industry could reach
BILLION by 2025.

CBD FOR PET’S SAKE.

IS THE UK MISSING A TRICK?

In the US, the CBD for pets sector is predicted to rise to a value of $563 million by the end of this year, while in the UK sales are prohibited.

Let’s paws for a moment. If you are reading this in the UK, then you need to know that it is currently illegal to provide CBD to pets, unless you have a valid veterinary prescription which are hard to come by.

The British industry is missing out as the US market is estimated to bring in $563 million this year, according to data from the Brightfield Group.

The most recent figures published by the Office for National Statistics revealed that expenditure on pets and related products reached an annual value of £6.9 million in 2019.

Market researchers at Euromonitor International estimate that on average, the British population spends £74 per person on pets, with most of this spend going on food, making this an area where CBD could be applied easily for potential treatment of conditions ranging from anxiety to kidney failure.

It’s tempting to want to help our four-legged friends by giving them something alternative such as a few drops of CBD. But much like food items, some might not be suitable for their digestive systems or may interfere with medication.

WHAT DOES THE SCIENCE SAY?

There has been very little research on CBD for pets but there are some studies emerging from the US, albeit conducted in small numbers of animal participants and mainly on dogs. Veterinarians agree that THC is lethal for animals, especially smaller cats or dogs and that hemp-derived

CBD is far safer for them.

Like us humans, animals also have an endocannabinoid system. Some American pet owners have posted online about using it to help their animals with anxiety, cardiac issues, loss of appetite and stress. However, if your pet is on treatment for a condition, it could interact with their prescribed medication.

US LAW

In the United States, the federal government is working on regulations for the sale of CBD which includes the veterinary industry. However, this has yet to be implemented so the law does not currently ban CBD.

Some small studies show CBD can be beneficial to pets who suffer from conditions like epilepsy. A study by Colorado State University found that seizures in dogs were reduced by 89% when treated with THC-free oil. Idiopathic epilepsy affects 5.7% of the domesticated dog population worldwide, making it the most common canine neurological condition. In this Colorado study, nine dogs were treated with CBD, while seven in a control group were treated with a placebo. Dr. Stephanie McGrath, author of the study said in a statement:

“We saw a correlation between how high the levels of CBD oil were in these dogs with how great the seizure reduction was. It’s really exciting that perhaps we can start looking at CBD in the future as an alternative to existing anti-convulsive drugs.”

US vets are allowed to prescribe Epidiolex for canines but it is an expensive script at $30,000 a year for an average sized dog.

US INDUSTRY BOOM

Further research from the Brightfield Group reports a huge increase in the US CBD pet industry in 2019. The market grew over 10-fold compared to its 2018 size, producing $321 million in sales. It is projected to increase to $563 million by the end of 2020. The growth is reportedly being driven by pet owners looking for natural alternatives or options where traditional medication has failed. The most popular form of treatment is tinctures, followed by edibles such as treats or chews.

Where does this leave the future of CBD in pet products in the UK?

Sadly, pets on this side of the Atlantic may be missing out. Until more studies and live trials are completed showing positive benefits outweighing any risk of CBD-associated harm in animals, it seems unlikely the law will change anytime soon.

Passionate about plants, Kara Bragg also is adept at cultivating people.

Under Kara’s watchful eye and tender care, Sovereign Fields grew fourfold in less than a year. The hempseed and biomass company based in Southern Oregon develops world-class genetics for low-THC, highCBD boutique hemp strains. Kara also has consulted on recreational cannabis cultivation for Humboldt Seed Organization, represented at 12,000 retail outlets in 60 countries.

“We don’t want to be boastful,” said Kara, who serves as Sovereign Fields’ director of production. “We just want to be for everyone. We’re trying to inspire change.”

Anticipating changes in the United States’ legalities for farming hemp, Kara with Sovereign Fields co-founders Eric Foster and Ryan Davidson quickly constructed a business plan in 2018 and launched operations in 2019.

Kara, 39, already had been nurturing her own brand, Cannag1rl, an anonymous online growing journal showcasing Humboldt Seed Organization’s new genetics. Years of growing cannabis and perfecting plant lineage poised the three entities on the crest of North America’s “green wave.”

Kara had sown these seeds all her life. As a kid in Southern California, she learned to garden alongside her parents, who organized horticulture projects on family holidays. Awestruck at the transformation after transplanting a living organism to a new environment, Kara drew parallels between human and plant development, imagining that — like humans — plants experience emotions.

She learned in high school from a friend’s dad how to clone a plant — and what made it a “clone.” To find out what would take root and grow, Kara started cloning any plant that passed into her hands. Her friends soon dubbed her the “crazy plant lady,” a persona that defined the course of Kara’s life.

An advocate for medical cannabis, Kara never thought to grow her own until a friend gave her 12 seedlings with a feeding recipe and schedule. Initially unaware that she had embarked on an eight-month project, equipped with little except a green thumb for houseplants, Kara surprised herself with the plants’ success and was hooked.

After 10 years in the cannabis industry, managing and consulting for large-scale growing operations, Kara seeks every opportunity to learn more and, in turn, share insight with fellow growers and breeders, many of whom she considers mentors and friends.

The United Kingdom may have a long road ahead toward cannabis legalization, but Kara loves to spread the word that providing food — and medicine — for oneself is not only empowering, but not as hard as one would think.

Above all: “Don’t forget to drink water and get sun,” she said. “You’re basically a houseplant with complicated emotions!”

THE BOY WHO CHANGED THE LAW CHANGES THE SYSTEM

Billy Caldwell has been referred to new UK-wide forum

RESCAS ahead of landmark high court hearing.

The boy who changed the law on medical cannabis, Billy Caldwell from Northern Ireland, has been referred to a new UK-wide forum for children with refractory epilepsy.

RESCAS, the Refractory Epilepsy Specialist Clinical Advisory Service, provides a forum for the discussion of difficult epilepsy cases that have presented diagnostic and/or management difficulties and have proven refractory to treatment.

The development comes as another landmark change for the British approach to medical cannabis, which the Caldwell family has been at the epicentre of for years. Billy, with the unwavering support of his mother Charlotte, set the pace for legalisation of medical cannabis from 2016, culminating in the then Home Secretary Sajid Javid giving the green light to legalisation on medical grounds in November 2018.

Announcing the news on the facebook page, Keep Billy Alive, proud mum Charlotte said:

“So excited to be able to tell you all following Billy’s reasonat consultation with Professor Helen Cross, GOSH [Great Ormond Street Hosptial], I have been notified – Billy’s case has been referred to RESCAS . This new service is a UK wide forum for children with refractory epilepsy to be assessed for Medical Cannabis and other treatment options. A UK first.”

Earlier in July, Billy’s legal case had been granted a high court hearing at Belfast Crown Court scheduled for September 7.

At the hearing, a judge could decide whether or not the NHS should cover the cost of Billy’s medical cannabis prescriptions, which he depends upon for any quality of life, according to mum Charlotte. This court hearing may still go ahead, should the outcome of any RESCAS decision be deemed unsuitable by the family’s legal representation.

84

Meanwhile, Charlotte has expressed her pride and delight of her young son’s achievements.

“I am SO SO proud of Billy.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Helen Cross for her personal and professional support .

“This should now give new hope to many children like Billy.

“It is beyond valuable to me to know that as long as Billy gets his cannabis oil every day he will be safe. He won’t have a seizure.

“It’s actually a very amazing feeling. It feels like a safety blanket. When you have a child that has seizures

so bad that they can take his life from him – that feeling is absolutely incomparable to anything else. It’s priceless.

“Months and months at a time that he just gets to be a CHILD.

“It is everything.

“So many people have come together to form an awesome community surrounding this little boy and it’s absolutely amazing to see how cared for Billy is – and how much support, encouragement and love you have given us throughout the years.”

What is RESCAS?

The national Refractory Epilepsy Specialist Clinical Advisory Service (RESCAS) is made up of a network of UK based paediatric neurology specialists.

The service provides a forum for the discussion of difficult epilepsy cases that have presented diagnostic and/ or management difficulties and have proven refractory to treatment.

RESCAS is hosted at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) but is jointly run with paediatric neurologists from throughout the UK. The service has been commissioned by NHS England and is supported by NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and Health and Social Care Northern Ireland.

PROJECT TWENTY21 ON TRACK

The largest European study of its kind aims to provide evidence of the efficacy of medical cannabis for a range of conditions.

The landmark Project Twenty21 medical cannabis register is still on track to launch to patients this summer.

The largest European project of its kind aims to provide a vast database of evidence gathered from medical cannabis patients with a range of conditions, from anxiety to chronic pain.

The team at Drug Science hopes that the data will inform wider prescribing of medical cannabis on the NHS.

The COVID-19 outbreak caused ‘major disruption’ to the development of the project. However, virtual appointments increased patient access and reduced the cost of private consultations.

In a recent update, the Project Twenty21 team said:

“The Project Twenty21 team completed the first test phase of the registry at the end of May 2020.

“Now the focus of the project is to increase the number of doctors who can prescribe medical cannabis, aiming for an official launch to patients in summer 2020.”

Project Twenty21 has partnered with five licensed cannabis producers who can provide various medical cannabis formulations at a significantly reduced cost of £150 per month.

There are currently just two types of medical cannabis available on the NHS.

Sativex, a 1:1 CBD:THC oral spray, can be prescribed for MS-related muscle spasticity where other treatments have been unsuccessful.

Epidyolex is used to treat LennoxGastaut syndrome and Dravet

88

syndrome: two rare types of epilepsy.

Meanwhile, Nabilone, a synthetic drug that mimics the effects of THC, is prescribed by specialist doctors to chemotherapy patients.

A Freedom of Information (FoA) request made public by The Guardian newspaper in June revealed that no new NHS patients had been prescribed full-extract cannabis oil since legalisation in 2018.

Drug Science Scientific Committee chair, Professor David Nutt, said:

“I suspect many doctors are afraid of cannabis after years of fear mongering and just want to be spoon-fed by the pharmaceutical industry.”

A WINDOW INTO THE WORLD OF CBD STUDIES

Although this year hasn’t gone according to plan for most, research on CBD & medical cannabis has continued despite COVID-19. We’ve handpicked four studies from this year you need to know about.

DAYE CBD TAMPONS FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS PATIENTS

London-based tampon manufacturer, DAYE, has partnered with the North London NHS Trust to investigate CBD for endometriosis patients. Researchers are examining how CBD may help in pain relief for the chronic condition. The trial involving 80 women is now in its final stage and is due to culminate in August.

INFANT CANNABIS TRIAL GETS UNDERWAY

The world’s first cannabis medicine trial involving infants has started in the UK. A research team led by Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust in London, hopes the trial will help infants who are at risk of developing brain injuries or suffering from seizures. Two babies born in March have so far been enrolled in the trial. Oscar Parodi was the first baby to be offered the opportunity. Oscar was delivered by emergency cesarean at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) on March 11. The babies are given a microdose of the cannabis-based drug within the first 12 hours of their lives. The amount administered is kept low at one thirtieth of the usual dose, according to the trial lead at Guys and St Thomas’. It will also involve other neonatal intensive care units in the UK and Europe taking up to a year to complete.

STUDY SHOWS CBG MAY HAVE POTENTIAL IN KILLING MRSA

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada recently published a paper showing that Cannabigerol (CBG) could kill a number of strains of MRSA, the antibiotic resistant staph bacterial infection. Tests showed the cannabinoid killed common MRSA microbes and ‘persister’ cells, which are resistant to antibiotics and can cause repeat infections. CBG also cleared up hard-to-kill ‘biofilms’ of MRSA that can form on the skin and in medical implants, according to researchers at McMaster.

Around 5 in every 100 people carry MRSA which can become deadly if vulnerable people are exposed to it.

CBD FOR COVID-19? RESEARCH SAYS IT MAY AID RECOVERY PROCESS

Researchers at Augusta University in Georgia have completed a study around CBD and COVID-19 recovery. The results suggest CBD could help with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is found in patients of severe COVID-19 symptoms, due to an overactive inflammatory response.

Researchers gave mice a treatment called Poly (I:C) which artificially induces ARDS, recreating symptoms seen in some COVID patients. This caused structural damages to the lungs of the mice similar to the damage seen in COVID patients and while they were experiencing these symptoms, the mice were given CBD.

The results showed that the mice experienced reduced signs of IL-6 which is an important factor in ARDS as well as lowered levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also showed increases in lymphocyte levels in the blood which are vital in fighting infection. The researchers concluded CBD could play an immunotherapeutic role in treating some severe respiratory viral infections.

ASK THE SCIENTIST

In each issue of The CANNAVIST, our goto science columnists break down the complexities of CBD and medical cannabis so that we can all skip right to the needto-know knowledge and make informed decisions about what products to invest in.

Here, Dr Parveen Bhatarah, Regulatory & Compliance Lead at the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis, explains the significance of the Certificate of Analysis (COA).

Q. What is a COA?

A Certificate of Analysis is an authenticated document that is issued by a product manufacturer’s Quality Assurance Department. It ascertains if a product has met its predetermined product release specifications and quality.

The significance of the COA is growing under the globalisation and contract manufacturing culture – the white labelling industry.

Predetermined specifications are either based on standards set by national pharmacopoeia or an appropriate specification for each aspect of quality studied during the phase of development and during the validation of the

manufacturing process. At least those aspects considered to be critical should be the object of specifications routinely verified.

It establishes specifications, i.e. qualitative and quantitative characteristics, with test procedures and acceptance limits, with which the product must comply during its intended shelf life.

What should be included in the COA as a minimum?

1. Name & address of the laboratory testing the sample 2. Name & description of the originator requesting the analysis 3. Name & batch number of the product 4. Reference to the specifications used for testing

5. Results of all the tests performed against the limits of the specification

6. Dates: Expiry or re-test date & date on which tests were completed

7. Signatures of the head of the laboratory or other authorised person

The complexity of outsourcing supply chains means it’s crucial to understand all of the testing methodology as used per the COA generation. Especially when you are using this information to manufacture the finish a product and this can lead to incorrect labelling especially the

94

percentage declaration of contents. Therefore, a COA forms the basis of the mathematical correctness for finished product labelling.

verification exercise become part of key ingredient release before being used in production.

The mislabelling of CBD products has already been highlighted in various CBD product re-testing exercises as well as in consumer surveys. In June, the Centre for Medical Cannabis published the first major third-party testing exercise of CBD products in the UK. In total, 30 oil products available in the UK (both on and offline) were selected for the blind testing exercise. This revealed a wide range variation in terms of quality, and some concerning poor practice in a minority of cases.

When a supplier is new, the results of the COA are usually confirmed for each shipment of the material by performing independent verification of the test results. Therefore, it’s always a good practice to check incoming goods and verify or have a written contract where a

Once a history of reliable and accurate results from the supplier is established, the purchaser will often perform skip lot testing, in which they verify the COA results on a defined periodic basis, with the exception of the identity test, which should be performed for each incoming shipment.

1. IPEC: Certificate of Analysis Guide for Pharmaceutical Excipients, International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council.

2. World Health Organization: Guidelines on the Implementation of the WHO Certification Scheme on the Quality of Pharmaceutical Products Moving in International Commerce.

These certificates are a tangible and important manifestation of a manufacturer’s relationship with its suppliers of key raw material like CBD and the other materials used to make finished products. A COA supplied to the customer is the key document where the materials suppliers, laboratory control systems and manufacturing interconnect. Hence these certs are important documents for ensuring the safety of the supply chain and consumer confidence in a product.

3. DEFRA: Food standards (labelling and composition)

Buyer Beware!

If a retailer or manufacturer cannot provide you with a COA, completed by an independent lab, you can’t be sure of the quality of the ingredients, or if there is even any CBD in the product!

cannabis in 2016. But it’s the CBD and wellness markets that present the greatest opportunity for expansion beyond state and international boundaries.

Over the past 18 months, the UK’s legal cannabis space has grown from a niche concern to spanning multiple industries.

It can now be considered a formidable sector of its own and continues to learn from and work with brands across the US.

One such experienced brand is Air Factory. The e-liquid firm’s journey began back in 2013. Over the past six months the company, now based in its own facility in Irvine, outside of Los Angeles, has dived head-first into the world of CBD and branched out internationally.

Air Factory’s Devin Ruzbasan recently moved to London so we thought we’d catch up and talk all things CBD.

“Our company is pretty diversified, so not only do we do Air Factory and CBD, we’re also in the process of opening up a cannabis testing lab,” Devin says.

“Most major cannabis companies are in Oregon, Washington or California, so we’re in the hub of the industry where it’s pretty easy to get accessories and the governance of the laws.”

“I mean, why wouldn’t you, right?”

Recreational cannabis has been legal in California since 2016 and the state

is now home to the world’s largest cannabis market, last year totalling close to $12 billion in estimated sales. But rather than capitalising on the thriving demand for legal THC-rich products, Air Factory has opted to go the broad-spectrum route, which opens doors not just beyond state lines but also to those who could be penalised for consumption, even in a legal state.

“Although cannabis is legal in California, if you go through a background check and you have THC in your body, you might not get the job.

“We wanted to have the effects of the CBD oils from the highest producing companies which is broad spectrum and we wanted to make sure that anybody who is using our products would not be penalised.”

While Air Factory established itself as a vape company, like many CBD brands operating today, it has since branched out into tinctures to appeal to, dare we say, a broader spectrum of customer.

96
legalised recreational Devin Ruzbasan - Air Factory

Devin and Co. have also found that the CBD vape products didn’t really take off, with consumers sceptical about the benefits of vaping CBD and some no doubt unsettled by last year’s health scare across the US, despite the Center for Disease Control insisting that black market THC products were largely to blame.

Given the hostility towards vaping in the US these days and how readily CBD has been embraced by the wellness industry on both sides of the Atlantic, tapping into this new market was a no-brainer for this SoCal company.

“We’re going to stay on the wellness side of CBD, so the tinctures, perhaps the topicals, some other products.”

“We’ll start very slowly and navigate one piece at a time and evolve into more of a wellness product as opposed to a vaping product.”

Having begun to navigate the FDA’s rigorous tobacco product application process for their e-liquids, Air Factory is in a good position to start on the

long road to gaining novel foods authorisation on this side of the pond that will soon be the only route to market for tinctures and edibles in the UK.

“The FDA has just began opening their doors on what CBD will look like in the US and the UK has started a similar process. The intended goal is to do whatever it takes to get our products approved for sale in the UK going forward.”

86% OF AMERICANS ARE FAMILIAR WITH CBD

100

Anew study has shown that 1 in 5 Americans has used CBD, while 86% of the US adult population at least knows of the cannabinoid at this stage.

Among the US adult population, those aged between 35 and 54 are most likely to spend more than $100 on a CBD product.

Meanwhile 29% are likely to purchase CBD in the second half of 2020, with some linking this surge to an uptake in the cannabinoid’s profile to the health concerns brought on by COVID-19. The key findings come from a bilateral study led by two global data powerhouses in the largest US CBD consumer survey to date.

The US CBD Consumer Report, conducted in partnership by New Frontier Data and smart payment systems firm Square also shows that 60% of American CBD consumers report using CBD to unwind. This could be for relaxation, to relieve stress or anxiety.

New Frontier Data is an independent, technologydriven analytics company specialising in the global cannabis industry. Square founded the Square Reader, the smart tech payment system. The company now accepts CBD businesses and has offices in the UK and Ireland.

New Frontier Data CEO Giadha Aguirre de Carcer says consumer trends in the US cements America as the largest global CBD market of 2020.

“Our research shows that 1 in 5 Americans have used CBD, which demonstrates a major jump in consumer interest in the sector.

“While this phenomena is taking root across many other regions such as Europe and Latin America, the United States continues to represent the largest CBD market; understanding its CBD consumers is therefore a priority for enterprises

within both the legal cannabis industry and a multitude of mature sectors such as Food & Beverage or Health & Beauty.”
