WELCOME!
For those who are yet to become acquainted with us at The CANNAVIST, we are the makers of the UK’s first ever cannabis publication and your hosts for CBD LIVE – the expo and auditorium.
The CANNAVIST Magazine is Britain’s essential guide to CBD and medical cannabis. We spent much of this year in lockdown, like America, and noticed there was a real void in events from a human connection perspective. Everybody was hopping on Zoom, but there’s only so much connection you can feel through the screen. As people, and as advocates, we need to network, we need to communicate cohesively, we need to share experiences and keep this community in motion.
So we took to our online platform, VOXPO, and set about creating a virtual community for you called CBD LIVE. Three days every quarter, you
can experience this live event built for learning, business and opportunity. The rest of the time, you can log in and relive the experience throughout the year on the go, from your couch or office. On behalf of the team, I would like to say how grateful we are to the thousands of American CBD and cannabis companies who have paved the way for the sector to spread as far as our nation across the pond. Without the developments seen across the US, from California to New Jersey, the British CBD and medical cannabis community may not even exist. Before we continue to get to know each other in this show guide, I’d like to take a moment to appreciate where America is at on the cannabis progress ladder. In every state where cannabis legalization or another drug policy reform was on the ballot on November 2, it won. What a time to be celebrating the American cannabis space.
HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT AT CBD LIVE
• The CANNAVIST Awards, Thursday November 19
• The CBD LIVE Auditorium, 10am-6pm CST each day
• Interact with the biggest names in CBD from the UK and USA
• Glean the latest info on consumer trends from experts and data analysts
• Discover the potential of cannabis in gut health
CBD LIVE PRESENTS THREE DAYS OF EDUCATION, PASSION AND OPPORTUNITIES.
Here’s a taste of what to expect.
EDUCATION
Learning around CBD and medical cannabis depends on science and communication. At The CANNAVIST, it’s our goal to put education first, to work towards normalizing CBD and the medical components of cannabis, which are very much a taboo still in 2020.
At CBD LIVE, we endeavour to bring you the science of cannabis in a way in which you can easily understand. For this, our second virtual event, we have gathered some of the most knowledgeable minds on CBD and cannabinoid research, policy and medicine. Our globally renowned experts will guide you over the weekend to further your learning. Whether you are interested in CBD for personal use, or how the medical cannabis system works. Maybe
you’d like to know what the chances of broader cannabis legalization or how to successfully market a CBD product. Whatever your question, the CBD LIVE Auditorium is your first port of call for answers.
Our schedule is packed with three days of content from our range of key speakers. That’s three whole days of information for you to absorb and take away.
Don’t worry if you can’t make it online to every single talk or presentation, the auditorium isn’t going anywhere. You can log in the following day, the next week or month and all of the content will still be there. Notepads at the ready!
PASSION
From support to lobbying to fundraising for medical cannabis prescriptions, we believe the legal cannabis community represents the best of humanity. It’s grown to change minds and governments and has guided conventional medical professionals in showing them why there is a need for a change of perspective on plant medicine. It has created a movement which has changed the laws in the US, the UK, Ireland and more. That’s why we’ve asked experts from the following organizations to come on board and use CBD LIVE as a platform to spread the facts on legal cannabis, and ultimately help prevent the spread of further stigma. We are delighted to have the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis and the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry as our official UK education partners to CBD LIVE. We’re equally proud to have US trade body, the CBD & Cannabinoid Industry Association as our US education partner. We have also linked up with expert market analysts at CBD-Intel, whose passion for the industry rings true in each and every presentation. We are also delighted to welcome Affinity, the European Industrial Hemp Association and Beauty UK. We couldn’t have done this without you.
OPPORTUNITIES
The VOXPO platform was created to support two niche industries in their time of need. That’s no exaggeration of the facts. For both the CBD and vape industries, the pandemic presented a scenario of sink or swim and unfortunately, many firms in both sectors will not return to operations. As your hosts, it is our mission to help this industry rediscover its mojo, to revitalise networking as if we were face-to-face at a physical expo, and to create a space where profitable opportunities can be made.
Covid-19 and the global shutdown have hit the job market hard. And although things now appear to be on the up, it looks like we shall be living with the virus and its economic impact for a while yet. At the same time, CBD use and interest has skyrocketed in recent months as the public look for natural methods of easing anxiety. Eight million adults in the UK (equivalent to 15% of the population) purchased CBD products in the first half of the year, exceeding £150
million in retail value. All previous trajectories for this period have been smashed, with the British market now set to be valued at £450 million, an increase of 50% growth compared to £300 million in 2019. Meanwhile, US consumer sales are predicted to reach around $1.8 billion by 2022. So which ever side of the Atlantic you’re on, the CBD juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down.
Why does this matter to us? We believe that virtual events like CBDD LIVE can give rise to new business opportunities, create new revenue ideas, and help curate a new age register of consumer interest in CBD. Combined, these three factors may result in companies making the ultimate comeback from corona times. As brands take in more revenue, they can begin to redevelop their workforce by investing in people in what is already a burgeoning industry. We invite all business owners and representatives to get talking, make the first move, treat this weekend as a fresh start. Don’t forget to check out our business lounge which is LinkedIn integrated.
WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT OUR LAST EVENT
Our first event on the VOXPO platform was a huge hit following many months of uncertainty across the CBD and vape industries. Here’s what some of the visitors from 82 countries had to say about the show.
“We can’t praise the expo enough. It was seriously phenomenal! The content was amazing, it’s so easy to use... everything is just spot on. The booths and the companies involved are brilliant. We are delighted to be a part of this incredible virtual expo. We can’t wait for the next live event!”
Cannabina
“VOXPO took a huge step into the virtual world and allowed me to see presentations and network with brands from the comfort of my sofa.”
Tom Bourlet, Brighton“VOXPO was a first. Well executed, clean, uncluttered and easy to navigate. A lot of interesting and educational content.”
“The booths, the talks, the set up of it all, the competition, access, amazing content. Brilliant! The only virtual expo I’ve ever actually enjoyed!”
“I had no set expectation so was really impressed with who engaged with the set up. Thanks for offering an alternative to a face-to-face vape show.”
“This is such a brilliant idea, with the way things are at the moment. Definitely something I’d like to see happen again.”
John Stockwood, Wales“I have been a great lover of expos for many years and was missing my annual fix. VOXPO provided a much needed injection of investigative and retail therapy.”
With cryptocurrencies poised to eliminate the costly middleman f rom virtually all industries and sectors, why should the lucrative CBD oil sector remain aloof?
R&R Naturals is among the top rated suppliers of high quality, full spectrum CBD (as well as contactless CBD), and is pleased to introduce Budcoin. The Budcoin
(thebudcointoken com) is compared to a cryptocurrency but is an asset based cashless system for the global CBD oil industry. The Budcoin is available for download at Thebudcointoken com and can be exchanged for products anywhere that the Budcoin is accepted. BUD C O I N W ALL ET R E T A I L E R
DIFFERENCE.
FROM THE UK TO THE USA
Our first virtual event was a game-changer, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world. Now we’re landing on the other side of the Atlantic to bring the best of CBD and medical cannabis to North America.
Travel and public health restrictions have led to pretty much every CBD and medical cannabis event being cancelled since March.
And while that was of course necessary in the fight against COVID-19, it’s left all of these gaps in learning, and in networking.
The conversations we were having at CBD parties, workshops and wellness events haven’t been happening. Meanwhile, we’ve all been bound to the confines of our borders.
CBD LIVE presented by The CANNAVIST offers an expo complete with the educational resources you’ve been lacking in 2020. And now, we’re bringing the show to the USA.
If you are interested in dipping your toe into the ocean of legal cannabis
products that are out there, or maybe you fancy starting your own CBD business from home, you’ll find everything you’ve been looking for over the past year at CBD Live.
This virtual expo and conference is open to everyone, all around the world, and it’s totally free to register. Just go to voxpo-event.com and click the big Register button and you’ll be on your way.
HOW IS CBD LIVE DIFFERENT TO OTHER VIRTUAL EVENTS?
For a start, there is no registration fee. That’s right, you can attend for free! With other online events, the technical capabilities for registered users and exhibitors are quite limited.
Through the VOXPO platform, visitors, speakers and exhibitors have every opportunity to engage. You can start a conversation in real
time via our live Q&A sessions in the auditorium, our live chat functionality on booths and in our LinkedIn integrated lounge for networking.
And on the days that we don’t have a live event running, all of these functions will still be working, so you can drop someone a line at any time.
WHO IS CBD LIVE FOR?
The beauty about a virtual expo is that there are (virtually!) no limits to the benefits. CBD Live is a B2B and B2C event, offering consumers an insight into the world of CBD that they will not get anywhere else this year, due to the cancellation of physical events caused by the coronavirus.
Businesses can make up for lost time by reconnecting with contacts
and making new connections, closing deals and marketing new opportunities to people around the world, all from the base of a single office desk or work-from-home set up.
Education plays a key role at CBD Live, so advocates, experts and enthusiasts are also lined up to participate.
WHO IS EXHIBITING?
We have some of the biggest names across the CBD and vape industries on board for our first US event. We’re adding to our exhibitors list every day and we are delighted to also have great media and education partners on board too!
From hemp growers to beauty brands to manufacturers to laboratories to cannabis associations, there is no limit to the kind of businesses we can host.
CAN I INTERACT WITH OTHERS IN REAL TIME?
Yes — on live days you will be able to see questions from visitors and respond to them in real time. You may engage in conversations via telephone, messaging, or video conferencing.
ARE THERE ANY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES?
Yes — education is one of the key factors taken into account by us, the organizers. We are storytellers at our core.
Delve into the auditorium where you will find hours of video content from CBD Live contributors, and our expert education partners.
WHAT ABOUT COMPETITIONS AND GIVEAWAYS?
Of course! You will have loads of opportunities to win prizes over the weekend, with hourly exhibitor giveaways, new and exclusive discounts and our leaderboard competition.
CAN I ACCESS THE EVENT ON MY PHONE OR TABLET?
Yes — you can access the platform from anywhere while on the go, as long as you have a good internet connection.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO EXHIBIT?
We have a number of exhibitor packages available. If you would like to get involved, email info@voxpoevent.com and a member of the team can tell you more.

The EXTRACT
A round-up of the latest hemp, CBD and medical cannabis stories making the news.
Canopy’s ‘Mood modulator’
Canadian cannabis giant Canopy Growth has announced the launch of a new range of CBD-infused drinks. Quatreau sparkling waters are the company’s first foray into the Canadian beverage market. The drinks come in four flavors: Cucumber + Mint and Passion Fruit + Guava, with 20mg of CBD and <1mg of THC. Ginger + Lime and Blueberry + Açai contain 2mg of both CBD and THC. CEO David Klein explained: “Initially, the idea for the brand was for it to be our first foray into mood modulation… So you pick your can color based upon the wave you wanted to ride.”
Working for you
New Jersey residents may soon be eligible to claim medical cannabis expenses as part of workers’ compensation. Bill A1708 requires workers’ compensation and personal injury protection (PIP) auto insurance benefits to cover cannabis medicine for workers enrolled on the state’s medical marijuana programme
Med cann first
A clinical trial in Toronto, Canada could help give physicians the data to prescribe cannabis for a wide range of pain-related conditions. In the Medical Cannabis Real-World Evidence (MC-RWE) trial, patients will know exactly how much CBD and THC is in a product. And if the product works for them, they can rely on each subsequent batch being the same. Dr. Hance Clarke, director of pain services at Toronto General Hospital, said: “For the first time we will have a national repository of data that can provide answers about the effectiveness of these products, to test their claims.”
Wellness hero
Goop founder Gwenyth Paltrow called cannabis a wellness ‘hero ingredient of the future’ following her investment in drinks company, Cann. Paltrow said: “There’s a whole sobercurious movement that’s going on and the cannabis-curious movement that’s going on, this is kind of at the intersection of those things in a way.”
Public health boost
Legalizing cannabis in Connecticut would improve public health during the coronavirus by preventing cannabis tourism to surrounding states, its governor said. Gov. Ned Lamont (D) said that officials have “got to think regionally when it comes to how we deal with the pandemic—and I think we have to think regionally when it comes to marijuana as well.”
Kornacki cares
MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki was offered a year’s supply of CBD to help calm him down during the election. The reporter whipped up a social media storm for his tireless performance, with #TrackingKornacki trending on social media. Columbia Care’s Jesse Channon wrote in a public letter addressed to Kornacki: “We at Columbia Care want to thank you for your incredible work and unwavering dedication to the American people. As a gift of gratitude, Columbia Care would like to offer you a yearlong supply of our high-quality CBD products, so you can relax and take the break you truly deserve.”
Booze buster
Almost half of people prescribed Tilray medical cannabis reduced or discontinued alcohol within 30 days of starting their prescription, a Canadian survey found. Overall, 973 participants reported past or current alcohol use, with 419 (44%) cutting down and 76 (8%) quitting altogether. Philippe Lucas, a Graduate Researcher at the University of Victoria and VP Global Patient Research and Access at Tilray, said: “The results of CCPS 2019 add to a growing body of evidence that medical cannabis use is often associated with reductions in the use of other substances, including alcohol, opioids, tobacco and illicit drugs.”
Hemp game changer
A new genetic test can predict whether a cannabis plant will produce mostly CBD or THC. Researchers at the University of Minnesota studied three different varieties of cannabis plants from industrial hemp growers and compared their genetic markers with their CBD vs THC ratios. The researchers concluded that the markers were a good predictor of the ratio. George Weiblen of the College of Biological Sciences said: “We hope this new test can assist in new seed certification for the hemp industry. For hemp to take off in Minnesota and elsewhere, there must be ways to assure growers they won’t have to destroy their crops at the end of the season.”
On the up
The global CBD oil market will have grown by $3.52 bn by the end of 2020, according to market research company Technavio. The figure represents an annual growth of just over 30%. The company predicts that the impact of Covid-19 on the CBD market will normalize in the third quarter of 2021 in the best case scenario or the first quarter of 2022 in the worst case scenario.
Epidiolex
rival?
Argentina may have its first locally-made cannabis medicine by early 2021, four years after medical cannabis was legalized. An official document shared by local newspaper Pharmabiz shows that government drugs head Manuel Limeres authorized the registration of Laboratorio Alef Medical Argentina’s Convupidiol as a medicine. The 35ml bottle contains 10% CBD and is designed to treat seizures in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome like FDA-approved Epidiolex.
A CLEAN SWEEP
Americans across party and state lines approved sweeping cannabis reforms in the 2020 elections. Advocates will now be hoping that the president elect stays true to his word and ushers in a new era of federal reform.
Words by Gordon StriblingThe 2020 American election will go down as one of the most controversial in recent memory. Despite Joe Biden claiming victory President Trump refuses to go down without a fight.
But while the presidential election result continues to divide opinion, the voting population was united in supporting cannabis reform at the ballot box.
Arizona
Proposition 207 was approved by 60% of voters, legalizing the possession and use of cannabis for recreational use.
The measure also expunges the records of individuals convicted of cannabis crimes, including felony possession. The state will also introduce ‘social equity’ licenses aimed at supporting communities disproportionately impacted by cannabis prohibition.
Montana
More than 56% of voters approved Initiative-190, which legalizes the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis for individuals aged 21 and above.
Legal adults are also permitted to cultivate up for four mature plants in an enclosed area out of public view.
New Jersey
Public Question No.1 will legalize possession and use of recreational cannabis for adult consumers. Medical cannabis is already legal in the state.
The vote will amend the state constitution, a move that drew controversy from critics including Don't Let NJ Go to Pot executive director, Gregg Edwards, who said: “[Once] it's in the Constitution, the likelihood of it coming out is slim or next to none."
South Dakota
South Dakota is the first state to legalize medical and recreational cannabis on the same day.
Constitutional Amendment A legalizes possession and use of cannabis by adults. Adults can also grow up to three plants for personal use, if they live in a jurisdiction without a licensed medical cannabis retailer. Distribution and sales are subject to a 15% tax.
Meanwhile, individuals with debilitating health conditions can possess and buy up to 3oz of medical cannabis from licensed dispensaries.
What’s next?
The election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will have given hope of reform on the federal level. Both have supported decriminalization in the past and the industry is already hopeful.
Canopy CEO David Klein said: “We believe the Biden win is an important step on the path to federal permissibility of cannabis in the U.S. market through decriminalization and de-scheduling.
"The results of the ballot initiatives clearly showcase that support for adult-use marijuana legalization extends across geographic and party lines and is supported by a majority of Americans.”
The 2020 election will also been remembered even progressive drug reforms outside of the cannabis realm.
Oregon became the first state to decriminalize the possession of small quantities of harder drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine.
Voters in Oregon and Washington approved the use of psychedelic mushrooms for therapy.
Magic mushrooms, which include the psychotropic compounds, psilocin and psilocybin, are already prescribed to some terminally ill patients in Canada.
The FDA has designated psilocybin as a ‘Breakthrough Therapy’ for treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder.

MEXICO’S LONG ROAD TO LEGALIZATION
Jorge Rubio Escalona is the founder of the Mexican Canadian Cannabis Alliance and a former official for the Mexican Federal Government. Here he asks: will cannabis finally be legalized in 2020?
It’s been over three years since medical cannabis was approved by the National Congress and the country is still waiting for the Federal Commission of Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) to grant bylaws.
Last August, the Mexican Ministry of Health published Draft Regulations on the website of the Federal Regulatory and Compliance Commission (CONAMER), and these regulations were rejected a few weeks ago because of the poor legal framework of how to establish a medical opportunity for patients, physicians and companies.
On the other hand, the National Congress has a deadline set by the Mexican Supreme Court to establish cannabis regulation by December 15. The National Congress has had more than ten bills to analyze during the last two years, and it is experiencing the strong pressure of cannabis collectives that are more interested in having the right to smoke a joint than creating and developing the marijuana and hemp industry in the country.
Current cannabis legislation in Mexico
Today, marijuana in Mexico is a stigmatized plant related to criminal groups that have owned the cannabis industry for the last four decades since the first drug cartels started operations smuggling weed across the border between Mexico and the U.S. The stories and legends of the cartels of Sinaloa, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez are well known worldwide.
Mexico’s current legal framework for cannabis and products derived from it is creating a mess in terms of import, distribution and access. Most of the cannabidiol (CBD) products are commercialized via social media rather than a pharmacy or an authorized retail point of sale.
Some entrepreneurs and local growers use a legal resource called Amparo to establish business models, all of them walking the thin line of legality.
What to expect at the international level?
Many conferences worldwide are talking about Mexico’s potential as a place to grow marijuana and hemp, as well as the opportunity to export CBD products and extraction and greenhouses technologies. Many Mexican and international entrepreneurs are already making several connections and agreements to enter the second biggest market for personal care products in Latin-American, with a population of more than 130 million.
It has been more than one year since the Draft Regulations were published, but it was not an easy path. This was mainly because federal authorities have a lack of knowledge about the cannabis industry and because of the crime and violence across the country.
Mexico is a very conservative society, and the cannabis leaf is a symbol of drug cartels and stigma for most Mexicans. Also, some sources claim that drug cartels have infiltrated Mexico’s top security ranks.
The legalization of cannabis in Mexico is an ongoing process that encompasses different legal steps and challenges. Policymakers need to better understand how the industry is moving in other international jurisdictions to make use of Mexico’s economic potential as a big player. Unfortunately, the presence of drug cartels could be a ‘deal-breaker’ for local growers interested in producing legal hemp or marijuana at a medium or large scale.
With clear cannabis regulations, more physicians and medical institutions will be able to research cannabis and understand its medicinal potential and benefits.
At the moment, the Mexican society is ready for medicinal cannabis but not at all ready for a recreational cannabis industry.
Challenges in the coming years
If cannabis regulation is approved this year, the next step for 2021 is the creation of bylaws, which will cover the operational aspects of
the law and all the implementation details, like granting licences, imports of CBD products, seed regulations, GMP and many other aspects.
That being said, the real challenges that Mexico will face after passing cannabis regulation are numerous. Here are some of the problems that Mexico will need to face:
• Lack of transparency and legislation to detect the legal origin of economic resources and how to prevent money laundering.
• The influence of criminal groups in growing and distributing recreational cannabis and products derived from marijuana.
• Excessive regulation and no support for the economic development of the industry.
• Priority of adult-use rather than a focus on medical and industrial hemp.
• Lack of knowledge and education of physicians and nurses around medical cannabis.
Mexican society is ready for medicinal cannabis but not at all ready for a recreational cannabis industry.

With a population of 130 million, Mexico is set to become the largest market worldwide to legalize cannabis for recreational use. Draft legislation suggests this ease of the law could be worth $1.2bn to the nation’s pocket by 2028. We take a look at the country’s long history with cannabis.
Pedro Cuadrado, a conquistador (Spanishappointed representative in Mexico) is credited with introducing the hemp plant to Mexico.
He and a friend reportedly ran a successful hemp cultivation business until the Spanish governor ordered them to limit production after the natives began using the plants recreationally.
Spain’s economy begins to decline, so the government decides to turn to its colonies. Specialists are sent to The Americas to instruct and encourage locals to farm hemp, specifically in areas such as California.
Hemp harvests from Mexico and California go according to plan until the Mexican War of Independence breaks out in 1810, leading to Spain’s loss of its American colonies. Government subsidies for hemp are no longer available and hemp cultivation is on the decline.
Mexico EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY
Recreational marijuana use is widespread in Mexico. In 1882, Mexico City enforces bans on cannabis, alcohol and cards from the military hospital in an effort to curtail fighting. Newspapers in Mexico and the US spread sensationalist stories about people using marijuana causing people to commit violent crimes.
LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY
1920 1927 1930s
Mexico’s Department of Public Sanitation declares new legislation, titled: “Dispositions on the Cultivation and Commerce of Products that Degenerate the Race.” This bans the sale, production and recreational use of cannabis.
As US states begin to criminalize the plant, Mexico bans stock from being exported over the border.
1970s 2009
The US government sponsors a scheme to spray herbicides paraquat and 2,4-D over cannabis fields in Mexico using helicopters. Herbicide poisoning cases begin to crop up in the US after the tainted plants are smuggled over the border.
President Felipe Calderón decriminalizes small amounts of cannabis and cocaine for possession, in an attempt for law enforcement to focus on traffickers and cartel bosses instead ecreational users.
Drug cartels begin to organise in Mexico to smuggle alcohol into the US during prohibition, eventually expanding to cannabis and other illegal drugs using increasingly violent means.
The Mexican Supreme Court makes it legal for four members of SMART (Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use) to grow and consume their own cannabis.
President Enrique Peña Nieto legalizes cannabis with under 1% THC for medical use.
The Supreme Court ends the cannabis prohibition in 2019 and moves to formally legalize cannabis in the near future. It hopes legalization will improve the country’s economy and put a dent in narco trafficking.
The deadline to approve or reject the poroposed reforms is delayed numerous times throout the year. It now stands at December 15.
If the reforms are approve, Mexico could ‘become the biggest legal cannabis market in the world,’ according to the LA Times.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE HELP AVAILABLE TO CBD FIRMS IN THE UK HIT BY COVID-19
By CBD-Intel EditorsCompanies in the UK which are struggling and in need of assistance due to lockdown rules in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic have several options to choose from, depending on their size and their needs. These include deferring VAT payments until March 31 2021, and claiming back sick pay.
The biggest scheme introduced by the UK is the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
All employers are eligible for this scheme, which gives furloughed employees 80% of their salary, up to £2,500 a month. It only covers employees who are paid through the UK’s pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) tax system and employees must have been on the payroll on February 28. The programme was recently extended to last until the end of March, 2021
Small and medium-sized companies which have been affected by the pandemic can apply for a Coronavirus Business Interruption loan.
Companies with a turnover of less than £45m who can demonstrate that they have been adversely affected by COVID-19 can receive loans and other financing, up to £5m. The government will guarantee 80% of the loan to the lender and will pay any interest and fees for the first 12 months.
A similar loan scheme is in place for companies with a turnover of more than £45m. At present these businesses may receive up to £25m (for turnover of £45m-£250m) or £50m (for turnover above £250m) in loans and financing.
As of May, the scheme has allowed companies to borrow up to 25% of turnover, up to a maximum of £200m, with banks underwriting 20% of the loan and the government
providing the remaining 80%. Dividend payouts will be prohibited as a condition of borrowing, though certain bonuses will still be permitted.
Smaller companies can also apply for a Bounce Back Loan
This is available between £2,000 and up to 25% of turnover, up to a maximum loan of £50,000, provided businesses can prove they have lost income due to COVID-19. The government guarantees 100% of the loan and there are no fees or interest for the first 12 months. After the first year, the interest rate will be 2.5%.
The Future Fund
The most recent scheme introduced by the British Government is the Future Fund. This allows start-ups which had raised at least £250,000 before the COVID-19 shutdown to receive up to £5m in funding from the government, provided a third party is willing to invest in the company. The scheme is aimed at companies that have not been able to benefit from other government relief measures and are in early stage development.
At present there are no EU-wide schemes to help businesses at a local level, although many EU countries have introduced their own economic relief packages, such as loan guarantees for businesses, deferment of taxes, state-backed aid, and other measures.

HOPEFUL HEMP
As jobs are lost, wages are cut and businesses are closed, could hemp play a role in getting the US economy back on track?
Words by Caroline BarryAmerica’s unemployment rate dropped to just under 8% in September, the lowest level since the start of the pandemic. But an unofficial figure by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity estimates that the real number could be more than 25%, if all those looking for full-time work that pays a living wage are taken into account.
Farmers across the US have truly embraced hemp since the passage of the Farm Bill in 2018. The versatile crop has created a huge economic opportunity - one that may be impossible to ignore for those seeking new opportunities to make money in the uncertain Covid era. The CBD trend may have driven the demand for hemp, but what about the other benefits of this incredible plant?
HEMP PLASTIC
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems facing the planet today. The oceans are starting to fill up with micro particles which are absorbed by fish, birds and animals and then entered into the food chain.
Landfills are full of non-recyclable plastic items which will not biodegrade. Hemp can be used to make a variety of items and is biodegradable.
Once fibers have been removed from hemp stems, what remains is 77% cellulose, which is a light source that could replace petrochemical plastics. It can also ‘lock in’ carbon, helping to clean the air.
BIOACCUMILATION
One of hemp’s most beneficial attributes is its ability to absorb carbon dioxide which is one of the key causes of climate change.
Hemp can absorb up to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare which makes it an extremely fast converter. It absorbs more of the compound per hectare than any other crop or commercial forestry. The plant consumes four times more CO2 than trees do and has a short growing cycle of just 12 to 14 weeks.
The plant also consumes radioactive pollution and toxins. This is one of the reasons why hemp plants were used to clean the soil after the Chernobyl disaster. Hemp could help the country contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas. The UN has reported that there will need to be a reduction in global emissions by 7.6% a year for the next decade to avoid a crisis.
HEMPCRETE
Hempcrete is a mix of natural materials, lime and hemp that may one day replace concrete. It requires very little water in comparison to concrete. It is also much more lightweight, is earthquake-resistant and has excellent thermal properties.
Hempcrete can be used to build, restore or renovate any type of building, making it an extremely versatile material.
BIOMASS FUELS
Biomass fuel is an alternative for coal, oil and gas. The plant is rich in cellulose and fiber that can be used in the production of fuel and energy. The auto fuel derived from the biomass can be converted in methanol or ethanol and hemp seed oil can be used in the manufacturing of petrol.
Embracing hemp biomass fuel would reduce our dependency on fossil fuels while also releasing less CO2 into the atmosphere. It is a greener and cleaner alternative.
THE PET ECONOMY
The market for CBD pet products is growing at a rapid pace, with more and more owners won over by the hype. But could pet products be next on the FDA’s enforcement hit list?
Words by Caroline BarryIn September this year, a report by Grand View Research projected that the global CBD pet market would reach $399.2 million by 2027, growing by over 40% each year.
Increased available expenditure and concerns about the health of pets are driving the change, the report revealed, with the trend for natural products further fuelling the growth.
It will come as no surprise that lockdown life in 2020 has not just been hard on pet owners but their animals, too.
Paw CBD sells a combination of veterinarian formulated tinctures, chews and topicals.
The pet brand reported a 64% increase in net sales, from approximately $750,000 in their March quarter to approximately $1,229,000 for their June quarter.
What does the science say?
A study by Colorado State University found that seizures in dogs were reduced by 89% when treated with THC-free oil. Idiopathic epilepsy affects 5.7% of the domesticated dog population worldwide, making it the most common canine neurological condition.
In this Colorado study, nine dogs were treated with CBD, while seven in a control group were treated with a placebo.
Dr. Stephanie McGrath, author of the study said in a statement: “We saw a correlation between how
high the levels of CBD oil were in these dogs with how great the seizure reduction was.
“It’s really exciting that perhaps we can start looking at CBD in the future as an alternative to existing anti-convulsive drugs.”
US vets are allowed to prescribe Epidiolex for canines but it is an expensive script at $30,000 a year for an average-sized dog.
FDA uncertainty
While CBD may possess certain potential health benefits, sellers making health claims about their products face the wrath of the FDA. The administration is in the process of issuing a draft enforcement policy, which could see the agency sending warning letters to companies marketing their products without authorization.
In late 2019, the agency sent warning letters to 13 companies selling CBD products to pets, stating that the products violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).
The claims addressed in previous warning letters relating to CBD products included:
• Works incredibly well for joint pain [and aggression] in pets,
• CBD oil works great for pets [with anxiety, hyperactivity, or PTSD]
• Adding [our CBD product can] help fight infection and
inflammation.
While the industry needs to be cautious in how it markets CBD pet products, consumers should also be extra vigilant when shopping for their pets.
THC is toxic to dogs and cats and owners should always consult veterinarian advice before treating their animal in case the dose could interfere with their pet’s existing medication or condition.
The amount of CBD that should be given to animals will also vary depending on the size of the animal. Animals share the same endocannabinoid system as humans which plays a key role in managing several biological processes, like sleep, immune response and memory.
The CBD pet market shows a huge amount of promise. But companies capitalizing on the trend with problematic marketing had better hope that the FDA’s bark is worse than its bite.

A WINDOW INTO THE WORLD OF CBD STUDIES
Although this year hasn’t gone according to plan for most, research on CBD & medical cannabis has continued despite Covid-19. We’ve handpicked four studies from this year you need to know about.
Words by Caroline BarryMed cann study gives hope to chemotherapy patients
Medical cannabis shows promise in reducing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, a worldfirst clinical trial has found.
In the study, published in the journal Annals of Oncology, 81 patients who had suffered from vomiting and nausea during chemotherapy were given either an oral dose of 2.5mg CBD/2.5mg THC or a placebo, three times a day.
All of the patients had previously taken nausea prevention medication that had proven ineffective.
At the end of the Phase II component of the study, a quarter of the medical cannabis patients experienced a complete elimination of nausea and vomiting, compared to 14 percent in the placebo group.
If medical cannabis is deemed to be sufficiently effective after further study, it could be considered for routine cancer care.
Med cann is a ‘yes-brainer’ in older patients
Medical cannabis does not impair cognitive function in older adults, a new study from the School of Public Health at the University of Haifa has found.
The study, published in the journal, Drug and Alcohol Review, included 125 patients over the age of 50 of which 63 were licensed to use medical cannabis for chronic pain.
The participants completed computerized tests evaluating
their psychomotor reactions, concentration and memory and learning capacity after using cannabis for one year.
The results showed that medical cannabis does not affect cognitive function in people over 50 if used to relive chronic pain. Areas such as concentration, memory and learning abilities were no different to those not using the plant.
The researchers hope that the findings will alleviate concern about its use for chronic pain which affects 19-37% of the elderly population.
Cannabis oil may improve fibromyalgia symptoms
A placebo-controlled trial has revealed that daily doses of THCcontaining cannabis oil could significantly reduce pain, fatigue and improve quality of life in people with fibromyalgia.
In the study, published in the journal Pain Medicine, 17 women with the condition were given one drop cannabis oil containing 1.22 mg of THC and 0.02 mg of CBD daily, increasing to 3 or 4 over 8 weeks.
The women then recorded their symptoms in a questionnaire every 10 days.
While the placebo group reported few changes for the duration of the study, the cannabis group reported significant improvement in a range of measures, including pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression.
They were also more likely to report ‘feeling good’ and less likely to miss work.
The ramdomized controlled trial
(RCT) is believed to be the first to demonstrate the lifestyle benefits of cannabis for fibromyalgia sufferers.
CBD for Covid-19? Research says it may aid recovery process
Researchers at Augusta University in Georgia have completed a study around CBD and Covid-19 recovery. The results suggest CBD could help with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is found in patients of severe Covid-19 symptoms, due to an overactive inflammatory response.
Researchers gave mice a treatment called Poly (I:C) which artificially induces ARDS, recreating symptoms seen in some Covid patients. This caused structural damages to the lungs of the mice similar to the damage seen in Covid patients and while they were experiencing these symptoms, the mice were given CBD.
The results showed that the mice experienced reduced signs of IL-6 which is an important factor in ARDS as well as lowered levels of
pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also showed increases in lymphocyte levels in the blood which are vital in fighting infection.
The researchers concluded CBD could play an immunotherapeutic role in treating some severe respiratory viral infections.
5 THINGS
YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EUROPE'S MEDICAL CANNABIS ECOSYSTEM
Thinking of investing in Europe's medical cannabis market? From east to west, there are significant developments to watch. Here are 5 things you need to know about Europe's medical cannabis ecosystem from a recent report by First Wednesdays.
1. Gaps in medical cannabis testing
The report highlights an, 'undersupply' of reliable, scalable testing companies across Europe, illustrated by the limited number of test-capacity companies presented on the ecosystem.
The report also finds that there is a lack of consistency in quality of testing, saying "not all testing companies are accredited to an internationally recognized standard, such as ISO/IEC 17025."
"There is a clear space in the market for a reliable, accredited, fast and widely trusted testing company."
2. The prescribing and dispensing landscape varies from location to location.
In nations which impose restrictions on accessing medical cannabis, such as the UK and Poland, specialist clinics have enabled patient access on a private basis.
In Germany and Italy, pharmacists play a larger role in preparing formulations. This, the report by First Wednesdays finds, allows for the provision of personalized medicines to patients, targeting specific needs, with less of a focus on off-the-shelf cannabis products.
3. Europe needs more clinical cannabis data
One consistent complaint of health regulators and policy makers about medical cannabis across the continent is the lack of clinical data and this is feeding demand. There is a reliance among healthcare systems on randomized controlled trials, perhaps stemming from the pharma and life sciences world.
A lack of clinical data is the main factor limiting widespread medical cannabis adoption by most European national regulators, First Wednesdays finds.
According to one medical cannabis expert, Dr Steve Hajioff, who contributed to the report, this void of clinical data is currently a barrier in the way of progress.
"One of the key barriers to research into cannabis-derived medicines in Europe is the lack of standardization within proposed studies. We need a clear target group of patients, a trial using a single product with a single delivery mechanism and a fixed dose. With this sort of standardization, researchers will be much more keen to do further studies."
4. Right now there are 27 ongoing clinical trials on cannabis in Europe
The report on Europe's medical cannabis ecosystem finds there is a clear growing interest in research into cannabis and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, PTSD, fear and phobias.
Of the 27 ongoing trials Europewide, the majority (70%) are academic-based, while less than 10% are government-backed, the findings show.
5. Is Denmark on course to become the European capital of medical cannabis?
The Danish market has become a uniquely European model for the regulation of medical cannabis, according to the First Wednesdays 2020 report.
In 2018, the same year as medical
cannabis legalisation in the UK, Denmark announced a 4-year pilot scheme to assess the effectiveness of cannabis based medicines, and build a foundation of what could be rich market which supplies its own pharmaceutical-grade cannabis grown domestically.
The scheme differs from similar programmes rolled out in recent years in other nations. Instead of looking just at barriers to access, it is a two-pronged approach to supply and demand.
Via two parallel four-year trials –one for domestic medical use and another for domestic cultivation - the hybrid approach is especially significant because of the openended system on which it is built.
There is no cap on production volumes and no limit to the number of licensed producers.
Analysis provided by the group which carried out this report, First Wednesdays, says there is clearly ‘an interesting’ medical cannabis ecosystem developing in Denmark... “…centred around establishing a viable domestic supply chain. Collaboration between licensed cannabis operators and leading non-cannabis companies has been necessary to achieve the required high standards of production, which is evident through the engagement of leading equipment suppliers, logistics and professional services companies."

“The CANNAVIST is an amazing new magazine to hit the US cannabis market offering access to great information about all things cannabis (and some things not). This media outlet has been an excellent way to get eyes on our products while the rest of the industry is heavily regulated and prohibits the advertisement of CBD products. Don’t take our word for it, grab your copy today and see exactly what we are talking about!”
“The CANNAVIST magazine team is fantastic to work with. They really understand our brands (Canna Club, Europe Canna Expo, London Canna Group), our clients’ brands and their objectives and always recommend and deliver partnerships that have performed above and beyond our expectations. The CANNAVIST has been instrumental for connecting us with the very niche readership and attracting people to our events. We are looking forward to another year of partnership.”
- Kristina Spionjak, Marketing Director, London Canna Group.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with The CANNAVIST for the October issue and I must say that it was a delightful experience. The process of submitting the ad was easy to navigate. Pricing was clear and the steps to follow for submission detailed. My representative was even knowledgeable about advertising restrictions which I greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to working with The CANNAVIST again and I am ultra-excited about the US version!”

We value the feedback we get from our clients. Here is what just some of our partners and friends of the magazine have said about working with us.
The Association for the Cannabinoid Industry is the UK’s leading cannabinoid industry association. We engage with food safety experts, regulators and retailers to ensure the CBD products you buy are safe, legal and ethically sound.
Our certification programme helps consumers and
identify which CBD products can be trusted. In the coming months brands will start to carry The ACI Certification logo. It’s a sign their products are safe, legal and contain exactly what is stated on the label.
