About Varley Public Programs The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is a municipal gallery with a vision is to be a cultural hub in the City of Markham. We inspire local and national audiences to engage with art, both historical and contemporary by presenting high quality and well-researched exhibitions and rich, educational and dynamic artistic programs that are relevant to the communities we serve. We also share and celebrate the life and work of F.H. Varley, a founding member of the Group of Seven.

Adapted Services (Ages 7 – 12) Art Therapy- Anxiety Ages 7 – 12 | VAG | Tuesdays, Jan 15 - Mar 5 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. | Sarah Bedley This course offers children experiencing anxiety a safe and supportive environment for creating healthy coping skills. Through drawing, painting and sculpting, children are provided an experience that can help them communicate feelings, relax and redirect unhelpful thoughts. Children will have the opportunity to use their imaginations to creatively problem solve and feel empowered when facing their worries. They will have the chance to work independently as well as collaboratively on art projects. Art projects will be based on goals set in the initial meeting between participants and art therapist. Through individual and collaborative art making, children will practice social skills, deepen relationships with others and correct attention and impulsivity issues. Pre-Teen and Teen Programs (Ages 8 – 18) Growing Creativity - Art Portfolio Developments for Teens Ages 14 – 18 | MAC | Mondays, Jan 7 – Feb 25 | 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. | Lisa Fong Suitable for high-school students interested in pursuing post-secondary studies in a creative field, this course will develop a fundamental base for a winning portfolio that starts with drawing fundamentals such as figurative drawing, gestures drawing and still life. Students will be introduced to colour theory and various painting techniques to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of artist mediums. Students will be encouraged to participate in group discussions as a way to develop critical language and self-critique. Most materials provided. The course focuses on the basics of drawing and incorporates the study of shading, perspective, composition and color theory. Photography for Pre-Teens Ages 8 – 12 | VAG | Thursdays, Jan 10 - Feb 28 | 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. | Petrija Dos Santos This fun and interactive course puts your tween behind the lens of a camera to learn about visual composition, flash and non-flash photography and how to take great photos outdoors. Participants will express their voice, ideas and vision through their photography and study work from established photographers. Art Camps Join us at the Varley this March break! The Varley Art Gallery offers fun, educational and enriching March break camps to engage your child’s imagination! Children ages 4 – 12 will have the opportunity to express how they see the world around them through gallery visits and a range of art-making activities, using a variety of techniques and media. Barcode: 333185 | Cost: $205 Portrait and Figurative Drawing - Advanced VAG | Wednesdays, Jan 30 – Mar 20 | 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. | Glenn Bernabe Portrait is an examination of character. But to be able to portray that effectively there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration for a portrait to be successful. This includes an understanding of the human face and figure, composition, light and shadow, drapery and colour. This course will build on those foundations that were learned in the Art of the Portrait, and test your ability to apply them. Using live subjects, extended poses will be used to enable the student to complete finished portraits as in-class exercises. Emphasis will be put on the actual set up of the subject and backdrop as well as the chosen pose. The poses themselves may last for two consecutive classes. This class is for students who have already taken a portraiture or figure drawing and want to hone their abilities of creating finished portraits. Acrylic Painting Micro/Macro VAG | Thursdays, Jan 10 – Feb 28 | 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. | Andrew Hamilton Artists will change their perspectives as they examine objects at their extremes. Students will learn how to paint in acrylics on both a miniature and oversized scale. Work closely with artist/instructor Andrew Hamilton and understand how to use the elements of design, focusing on proportion, balance, and unity. Through a combination of hands-on exercises and take-home projects, students will learn the fundamentals of hand lettering and will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of tools, styles and techniques. Students will learn how to draw different styles of letters and embellishments, and will learn how to combine these elements to create dynamic and eye-catching hand-lettered pieces. Students will also learn how to move confidently through the lettering process, including developing layouts, analyzing and refining drafts, and adding ink. Life Drawing Drop-in Join us every Thursday for Life Drawing Drop-in sessions in our studio! We offer the opportunity for artists to practice nude drawing and build a social and artistic network by meeting and working amongst their peers. We provide easels, sinks, Wi-Fi, and free admission to the exhibition spaces. Bring your own sketching and drawing materials. Note: The sessions are non-instructional. Artists under the age of 18 must have parental permission to participate in nude life drawing sessions. Fees   
