Director’s Letter This year marks the centenary of when F.H. Varley became an Official War Artist. In 1918 he joined the Canadian War Memorials Fund established to document Canada’s contributions to World War I. Commissioned as a Captain in the Canadian army, Varley departed for England in March 1918 and by mid-September was at the front lines in France. Although a noncombatant, F.H. Varley did experience extreme situations. According to his biographer Maria Tippett “in these last two months of the war…Varley probably saw more of the fighting than any other war artist.” The year 2018 is also the centenary of the first Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, which brought an end to World War I. In commemoration of both the Armistice and F.H. Varley’s service as an Official War Artist, our major fall exhibition is Witness – Canadian Art of the First World War, organized and circulated by the Canadian War Museum. Comprising some 50 works by a range of artists, the exhibition incorporates one of F.H. Varley’s most widely admired paintings, The Sunken Road, 1919, a searing indictment of the human cost of the great conflagration. We are also proud to display a Varley from our own collection, Shelled Buildings, France, 1919. To complement the exhibition, we offer a full range of programs. These include free tours on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2018, immediately following the ceremony at the Main Street Unionville Cenotaph, across the road from the gallery. Witness September 15, 2018 – January 6, 2019 Witness – Canadian Art of the First World War examines how Canadians used art to communicate and commemorate their First World War experiences at home and overseas. Some, like future Group of Seven members A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer and Frederick Varley, were official war artists commissioned by Lord Beaverbrook’s Canadian War Memorials Fund to document the conflict. Others, like Frederick Clemesha, Thurston Topham and Vivian Cummings, were soldiers in the field who made small drawings to send home to loved ones, or whose works were acquired by the Fund after the war. The Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, one of the largest such collections in the world, contains about 2,500 paintings, drawings, sketches, prints and posters from the First World War. The exhibition features over 50 works of art by both official artists and soldiers in the field. Witness – Canadian Art of the First World War is a travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.

Inscapes September 15, 2018 – January 6, 2019 Curated by Anik Glaude Featuring works from the Varley Art Gallery of Markham’s permanent collection, Inscapes explores the landscape genre and considers the relationship between it and the natural world it depicts. This exhibition focuses on representations of the places we inhabit, whether they be physical or imagined. Seascapes, snowscapes, cityscapes, and even mindscapes, are generic terms used to describe the types of environments represented within an artwork. An “inscape,” on the other hand, is defined as the essential quality of a particular human being, object or location.
