A word from the editor Welcome to the second issue of WATCH this Magazine (WTM) since the start!

We can proudly state that our decision to publish WTM has resulted in a lot more positive feedback than we had ever dreamed of.

The result for the work group behind the project has been a road trip of success. Wherever we have traveled in the world of watches, the praise has been massive from our readers as well as people in the business.

For an experienced magazine producer such as myself, this kind of positive reception is pretty awesome – in our business you are usually only remembered by your latest mistake. The heartwarming feedback proves that the opposite can sometimes be true. We wish to extend our deeply felt gratitude to all those who contribute for watches to claim their rightful place in the lifestyle business.

Naturally, this puts even more pressure on us. We always have to try to out-perform ourselves. But with the first issue under our belts we still have to work hard, although it has generated a complete trust from the business. This is a big help in the communication to get the “right” material specifically for you WTM readers.

I am looking forward to the response to this second issue. We know that you watch lovers like to discuss watches and compare your interest with others who share the same passion for timepieces. With this in mind, I certainly hope you readers will share your response with us, whether negative or positive.

Det är med stolthet vi kan säga att satsningen på att ge ut WTM har fallit ut mycket mer positivt än vad vi kunnat ana.

Resultatet för arbetsgruppen bakom projektet blev en modern form av Eriksgata, var vi än har rest inom klockornas värld har berömmet varit helhjärtat från både bransch och läsare.

Det är speciellt för en gammal tidningsmakare som mig att få uppleva det eftersom det i vår bransch bara är genom det senaste misstaget man brukar bli ihågkommen. Att det kan vara tvärtom bevisar reaktionerna den senaste tiden. Vi riktar ett stort tack till alla som gör vågen för

t was at last year’s film festival in Cannes that we were informed that Chopard – one of the world’s largest privately owned producer of top-notch watches and jewelry – are working for sustainable luxury through their relation with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) in South Africa.

The Green Carpet is the order of the day, which means jewelry and watchcases made out of Fairmine gold and responsibly supplied diamonds. These pieces have been worn by Marion Cotiallard (from the movie Blood Ties) in Cannes, by Virginie Ledoyen (French actress) at the Venice film festival, and by Cate Blanchet at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards.

Chopard also presented the world’s first watch with a case made of Fairmined gold at Baselworld last spring, called the LUC Tourbillon QF Fairmined. The watch is produced in a number of 25 units and has a nine-day power reserve.

This initiative from Chopard is the result of an engagement shared by Livia Firth (actor Colin’s wife) and one of Chopard’s two CEO’s, Caroline Scheufele.

Livia Firth is a founder of Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) that encourages celebrities and fashion designers to “think green” and raise the profile for ethics in the fashion business. Several designers have joined the movement, like Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham and Stella McCartney to name just a few, but no one in the watch

and jewelry business had dared pick up the passed torch when the two ladies met at the Academy Awards two years ago.

- When I met Caroline Scheufele I knew she would be up to the challenge, says Livia Firth in a video from a seminar about luxury arranged by the International New York Times with top ranking fashion reporter Suszy Menkes as moderator.

Film festivals are about luxury, glamour, beautiful dresses and exclusive watches and jewelry. But it’s also a platform that we can use to communicate through actors on the red carpet, Caroline Scheufele adds.

Chopard and Eco-Age, that Livia Firth represents, joined forces with ARM, an independent non-governmental organization based in Colombia, which aims to support those at the bottom of the ladder of gold mining.

ARM supports and makes it possible for mining communities to get Fairmined certification, which gives them a solid road to the market and a fair deal for the miners and their communities when they sell their gold.

Caroline was asked the following question when she met Livia:

”So where do you buy your gold?” ”From the bank of Switzerland”, was the quick answer.

Caroline admitted that she hade never given much thought to where it came from.

- In ARM, we are happy about Chopard’s choice to support small-scale mines and their workers by our Fairmined template.

We know that when the mining sector and the chain of retailing work together, it makes a difference to small poor mining societies that make their living from the mine, says Lina Villa-Córdoba, CEO of ARM. ARM says there is 360 kilos of Fairmined gold available on the market today, and their goal is to increase the figure to 1,000 kilos by 2015.

- We are a family business and very aware of our responsibility for sustainable luxury. This is the start of a very exciting program over several years that will make sure that we work towards our goal for sustainable jewelry. We are hoping to set a chain reaction in motion. It’s not easy, but it’s the right way to go, says Caroline Scheufele.

The first Green Carpet Challenge was

carried out at this year’s Golden Globe.

Cate Blanchett, winner of the title Best Female Actor, strode down the red carpet wearing a fabulous pair of earrings from Chopard with 72 navette diamonds looking like tender leaves. The diamonds were from the IGC group, one of the oldest diamond suppliers in the world, and their origins were certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). Chopard were also one of the first to make sure their diamonds are “conflict free” and they support the Kimberly process.

- Cate Blanchett is more than just a brilliant actress and a fashion icon, she is also a woman with great understanding for important matters. By wearing Chopard’s jewelry at the Golden Globe, Cate signals that she supports a real evolution into sustainable luxury that makes a difference already for the miners’ conditions, says Livia Firth.

The presentation of the watch made out of the coveted Fairmine gold shows Chopard’s intentions to choose Fairmine gold for all their collections as soon as there is an adequate supply of this important gold.

Hållbart för ett bättre samvete Rättvisa arbetsförhållanden och drägligt betalt är ett viktigt säljargument inom lyxsegmentet.

Det var vid filmfestivalen i Cannes förra året som vi fick veta att Chopard – en av världens största privatägda tillverkare av smycken och klockor i lyxklass – arbetar för hållbar lyx genom sin relation med Alliansen för Responsible Mining (ARM) i Sydafrika.

Det är den gröna mattan som numera gäller vilket betyder smycken och klockboetter tillverkade av Fairmine-guld och ansvarsfullt inköpta diamanter.

Dessa smycken har burits av Marion Cotiallard (från filmen Blood Ties) i Cannes, av Virginie Ledoyen (fransk skådespelare) på filmfestivalen i Venedig och av Cate Blanchett vid Golden Globe 2014.

- Filmfestivaler handlar om lyx, glamour, vackra klänningar och vackra smycken och klockor. Men det är också en plattform som vi kan använda för att kommunicera via skådespelare på röda mattan, tillägger Caroline Scheufele.

Vi vet att när aktörer inom gruvsektorn och leveranskedjan går samman gör det skillnad för små och fattiga gruvsamhällen som lever på sitt hantverk, säger Lina Villa-Córdoba, VD för ARM. ARM säger att i dag finns det 360 kg Fairmined guld tillgängligt på marknaden och deras mål är att det 2015 ska bli ett ton.

ntoine Norbert de Patek received a warm welcome from the citizens of Geneva right at his arrival in 1835.

Four years later he started a watchmaking business under the name Patek & Cie. When he met the French watchmaking genius Jean-Adrien Philippe in 1851 and hired him, and later made him a business partner, he changed the name to the one we know today. Patek Philippe have been loyal to the city and canton of Geneva ever since, and

still own the original workshop at Rue du Rhône where they have stayed since 1853.

Patek Philippe has always been known for skilled craftsmanship in every part and have become famous, much awarded and respected for their work. Not only when it comes to the movements, but also the engraving, guilloch, enamel, miniature painting, intarsia, jewelry work and skeletonizing to mention some of the fine arts.

In the 1940’s the company was sold to the Stern family, who right after the acquisition started collecting the finest watches and

objects from the different branches of craftsmanship. The family wanted to showcase the best examples of decorative art in a miniature format.

The world famous collection was presented for the first time in 2001, the same year as the premiere of the Patek Philippe museum.

Wanting to let the general public see these masterpieces, the Stern family built up a great collection of timepieces ranging all the way back to the 1600’s for anyone who wants to have a look and be amazed. The museum is several stories high and of

jubilee course contains a large number of Patek watches – but the historic experience is the biggest thrill of looking over counter after counter during the visit.

Preservingtheknowledgeandcraftsmanship of all the special areas of watchmaking has become a matter of honor to the Stern family.

The most skilled craftsmen were drafted to keep the traditions alive. In 1789 there were 200 engravers registered in Geneva – today their number is only about a dozen.

Anniversary models – some quick facts Of the special watches, the Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175 is the most remarkable of them all. It’s the first double face watch from Patek Philippe and can be worn with either side up, focusing on time and Sonnerie or with the other side’s perpetual calendar. The case is 47 mm and contains a movement with 20 complications and 1,580 separate parts.

The Jump Hour Ref. 5275 in a tonneau shape is a feast to the ear as well as the eye.

The jumping hands (second and minute hand) and the hour indication are clearly visible, and a signal sounds with every new hour.

The World Time Moon ref. 5575 and 7175 boil down to what a watch with universal time really is. An innovative moon phase display makes this watch a real gem. The case is 38 mm in diameter.

The Chronograph ref. 5975 och 4675 is the most popular complication for a Patek Philippe watch, for measuring time intervals with calibers developed inhouse.

The anniversary watch contains a little more than an ordinary chronograph, and is with its extra scales almost a mechanical computer for the wrist.

Grattis till 175 år i perfektionens tjänst!

I samband med sitt 175-årskalas presenterade Patek Philippe ett antal limiterade serier av högsta kvalitet. Kollektionen är en hyllning till staden Genève och dess hantverksarv.

Antoine Norbert de Patek fick när han anlände till Genève ett varmt välkomnande av stadens invånare redan från början. Han kom 1835 och fyra år senare startade han urverkstillverkning som han döpte till Patek & Cie. När sedan han sedan mötte den geniala franske urmakaren Jean-Adrien Philippe 1851 och lät honom börja på företaget och även lät honom bli blev delägare ändrades namnet till det vi känner idag. Patek Philippe har sedan dess blivit staden och kantonen Genève lojal, och äger fortfarande de ursprungliga lokalerna på Rue du Rhône där de flyttade in 1853.

Patek Philippe har konsekvent lagt stor vikt på skickligt hantverk i alla sina delar och är berömda, prisbelönta och högt respekterade

för sitt arbete. Naturligtvis gäller detta urmakerikonstruktionerna men också gravyr, guilloch, emaljering, miniatyrmålning, intarsia, juvelerararbete och skeletonizing för att nämna några av disciplinerna.

På 1940-talet såldes företaget till familjen Stern som direkt efter förvärvet började samla de bästa uren och föremålen inom de olika hantverksgrenarna. Anledningen var att man ville visa upp de finaste exemplen på de berörda hantverksgrenarna och vittna om höjdpunkterna av dekorativ konst i miniatyrformat.

Samlingen som är världsberömd presenteras för första gången 2001 i samband med att Patek Philippes museum invigdes samma år.

Familjen Stern, som vill ge allmänheten tillgång till dessa paradnummer, samlade i den största samlingen av bärbara tidtagningsinstrument från och med 1600talet, låter alla som vill komma i och titta, njuta och förvånas över

de vackra uren. De upptar flera våningar och naturligtvis finns även en stor samling av Pateks ur – men det är den historiska upplevelsen som verkligen gör att man njuter av att gå från monter till monter under besöket.

Att behålla kunskapen och handlaget för de olika specialområdena inom urmakeriet har för familjen Stern blivit en hederssak.

De bästa hantverkarna inom sina respektive yrken rekryterades och att denna kraftsamling gjordes för att behålla kunskapen vid liv bevisas av att år 1789 fanns det 200 gravörer registrerade i Genève – idag är antalet cirka ett dussin.

Snabbfakta för jubileumsmodellerna Av de specialtillverkade klockorna är Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175 den märkvärdigaste av dem alla. Det är det första dubbel-face armbandsuret som Patek Philippe tillverkat och kan bäras med båda sidorna upp, den ena med fokus på

tid och Sonnerie, eller den andra med evighetskalender. Boetten är 47 mm och innehåller ett verk med 20 komplikationer som i sin tur innehåller 1 580 delar.

Jump Hour Ref. 5275 i en tonneauform är en fest för ögon och öron. De hoppande visarna (sekundvisare, minutvisare) och timindikation är klart synliga samtidigt som en ton anger att det är ny timme.

World Time Moon ref. 5575 och 7175 kokar ner vad en klocka med världstid egentligen är. En innovativ visning av månfas gör denna klocka mycket intressant.

Boettens diameter är 38 mm.

Chronograph ref. 5975 och 4675 Kronograf är den populäraste komplikationen för en Patek Philippe klocka, klockor för mätning av tidsintervall med calibrar framtagna inhouse. Jubileumsklockan innehåller lite mer än en vanlig kronograf och är till viss mån en mekanisk dator för handleden på grund av sina extra skalor.

Innovative designe A secret underwater journey that the world wouldn’t soon forget once it found out. Captain Anderson commanded the submarine Nautilus and kept track of time with a Swiss watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre on his wrist.

The Geophysic model in upgraded version

ntoine LeCoultre started his watchmaking business in 1833 in the village Le Sentier in the Swiss Jura mountains.

He became famous for his innovative movements and was awarded a gold medal at the London World Fair in 1851 for his skills concerning precision and mechanics.

In 1903, Paris watchmaker Edmond Jaeger challenged Antoine’s grandchildren who had taken over the business to develop extremely thin movements. Mutual respect grew and led to the new company name Jaeger-

LeCoultre. More prizes were won and the extremely well known model Reverso, also known as the “Polo watch”, would later make the brand name famous all over the world.

1958 saw the introduction of the Geophysic model, a chronometer equipped with the caliber 478BWSbr, developed for military use. A stopwatch, improved balance for stability and durability, resistance to extremely high and low temperatures as well as an inner cover out of iron to withstand magnetism were some of its strong points.

factor to those who were planning to make a submarine trip under the pack ice of the North Pole.

On August 1, 1958, the world’s first nuclear submarine the USS Nautilus with six 21-inch torpedo tubes took off with great secrecy to make a journey from one ocean to another in the shortest possible time, which meant under the ice of the Arctic.

The Nautilus reached the North Pole August 3. Captain Anderson took his submarine on 25 laps around the pole to become “the fist vessel in history to sail around the world 25 times non-stop”. At Bering Strait the sub went under the pack ice and captain Anderson went from the North Pole to Greenland where the boat came to the surface. The underwater journey was completed without anyone knowing except the crew and the president of the United States.

The order to carry out the experiment had come directly from president Dwight D. Eisenhower as a direct answer to the Russian Sputnik. The Nautilus could operate at a depth of 500 meters, and the cover of ice above it varied from 3 to 15 meters with the sun sometimes shining through the blue

ice. Captain Anderson was awarded a medal from Eisenhower for taking his ship and crew safely through the historical underwater journey. Anderson later became a member of the Congress and passed away in 2007.

Whether he had any Swedish ancestry is unknown but quite likely. The Nautilus was retired from service in the 1980’s and is now a museum object in Connecticut.

Jaeger-LeCoultre, proud of having had their watch on captain Anderson’s wrist, have now produced an upgraded version. The diameter is 38,5 mm, which is slightly larger than the original but better suited for today’s taste in watches.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic is waterproof to 100 meters, has an alligator wristband and is available in steel (800 units made), 18-carat gold (300 units) and platinum (58 units). On the back of the case is a globe with Jaeger’s initials. The movement has a 43-hour power reserve and contains 202 separate parts and 29 jewels.

The movement is the self-winding Calibre

898/1, considered one of the most precise and reliable in-house movements on the market. The frequency is 28,800 vibrations per hour for maximum precision and the self-winding mechanism with ceramic roller bearings doesn’t require any lubrication. An iron inner case protects the movement from surrounding magnetism.

Stoppur, extra bra balans för stabilitet och tålighet för både extremt höga och extremt låga temperaturer tillsammans med ett innerhölje i boetten gjort av järn för att slippa påverkan av magnetism var verkets specialfördelar. Att verket dessutom tålde 600 gauss var en viktig detalj, särskilt om man satsade på att per ubåt ta sig under isen vid Nordpolen.

Den 1 augusti 1958 lade världens första atombestyckade ubåt USS Nautilus ut, med sex stycken 21 tums torpedtuber, under stor sekretess för att göra en resa från en ocean till en annan på kortast möjliga väg vilket innebar under isen som täcker Arktis.

Den 3 augusti kom Nautilus fram till Nordpolen. Där lät kapten Anderson ubåten kretsa runt polen 25 gånger för att på så sätt bli ”det första fartyg i historien som seglat jorden runt 25 varv non-stop”. Vid Berings sund dök ubåten under packisen, från Nordpolen for kapten

Anderson mot Grönland där man gick upp till ytläge. Resan under vatten var avklarad utan att någon mer än besättningen och USA:s president visste om att den skett.

Ordern om genomförandet hade kommit direkt från president Dwight D. Eisenhower, och var ett direkt svar på ryssarnas Sputnik.

Nautilus gick på ett djup av cirka 500 meter och istäcket ovanför lär för det mesta ha varierat i tjocklek från 3 till 15 meter med solens strålar som gick ibland genom den blå isen i varierande styrka. Kapten Anderson mottog senare medalj av Eisenhower för att ha lett sitt fartyg och besättning genom denna historiska undervattensseglats.

Anderson blev senare kongressledamot och gick bort år 2007. Om Anderson hade några svenska rötter har inte gått att belägga men kanske var det så. Nautilus togs ur drift på 1980talet och är nu ett museiföremål i Connecticut.

Jaeger-LeCoultre, stolta av att ha haft en klocka med på båten

placerad på kaptenens handled, gör nu en uppgraderad version inspirerad av ursprungsmodellen.

Diametern är på 38,5 mm vilket är något större men passar bättre in i dagens sätt att bära klockor.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic är vattentät till 100 meter, har armband av alligator och finns i stål (800 exemplar), 18 ct guld (300 exemplar) och i platina (58 exemplar). På bakboetten finns en jordglob med Jaegers initialer över.

Verket har 43 timmars gångreserv och innehåller 202 delar och 29 juveler.

Verket är Calibre 898/1, som anses vara ett av de på marknaden mest exakta och tillförlitliga inhouse-verken med automatisk uppdragning. Frekvens är 28 800 vibrationer per timme för högsta precision och den automatiska uppdragningen med keramiska kullager kräver inte någon smörjning, en innerboett i järn skyddar även det nya verket från att påverkas av omkringliggande magnetfält.

Accessible luxury with in-house movements WTM took a trip to Geneva for a conversation with Peter Stas, one of the owners of the brand that keeps reasonable prices of their products as their philosophy.

F

rédérique Constant is one of those brands that keep working under the radar and does a lot of things right, including producing their own movements. In their 25 years in the business, the Geneva-based watch company has built a solid reputation for quality watches at what is usually referred to as “accessible” prices.

The name may sound like the company has been around for generations, but Frédérique Constant was actually founded in 1988 by the Dutch couple Peter Stas and Aletta Bax. The names were borrowed from actual persons no longer alive, and there is a hint of relationship with at least one of them. The name Frédérique Constant is based on Frédérique Schreiner (1881-1969) and Constant Stas (1880-1967). Today’s CEO Peter C. Stas is related to Constant Stas who founded a watch face-making company in 1904.

Aletta Bax and Peter C. Stas had designed watches as a hobby since many years, which resulted in a first collection of six models with movements from watchmakers in Geneva that was presented in 1992. In 1997, the company moved to Geneva and in that year more than 24,000 watches were produced.

The Heartbeat series, developed in 1994, is easily recognizable from an opening in the face where you can see the oscillating balance like a pulsating heart. Others like Zenith copied the idea many years later. Unfortunately Frédérique Constant never took out a patent on the “face hole”.

The market received the new brand with some suspicion at first, but the trust of the watchmakers was soon won over and in 2011 production figures were over 120,000 watches sold in more than 100 countries.

- To begin with we hardly got any thumbs up from the Swiss watch industry. The usual response was ”very nice but bye bye”, Peter says.

Still the couple decided to struggle on and design watches that they liked themselves, and that the customers liked too and also could afford buying. The company’s slogan is “accessible luxury”.

- The concept behind Frédérique Constant has always been to create high quality, classic looks and Geneva-made watches at reasonable prices, Peter says, and also reveals that there are plans for a twice as large manufacturing plant in addition to the one already in existence.

In 2001 they started developing their own caliber, later to be called the Heartbeat, in a joint venture with the École d’Horlogerie de Genève. Seven years later they presented a movement with a tourbillon of extreme precision, and four years later they introduced their world timer, which is adjustable with only the crown.

down through a refined watchmaking process. The gold isn’t solid, the gold cases have a thick plating that is very durable. Sure there are some solid gold cases, bur only as a smaller part of the production. The level of craftsmanship is high, the guioche of the faces is perfect and the sapphire glass in the back of the case is all there. The perforations of the faces to let the owner see the movements in action are also very well carried out. There is no COSC certificate or Geneva Seals yet – but there may be soon, says Peter but adds:

- It would make the watches more expensive though, and the customer-friendly prices are still the most important factor for our sales figures.

Asked if their watches could pass the regulations for both certificates, Peter answers: - Sure, no problem, all the movements are tested both before and after assembly in tests that are tougher than the COSC’s.

We have positioned ourselves at a level that makes our watches accessible to most customers with prices ranging from 6,500 to 35,000 SEK, Peter concludes.

Trots att namnet låter som om det vore ett företag byggt i generationer är Frédérique Constant skapat av det holländska paret Peter Stas och Aletta Bax 1988. Namnen har visserligen burits av nu icke längre levande personer och en gnutta släktskap med åtminstone ett av dem finns. Namnet Frédérique Constant är byggt på Frédérique Schreiner (1881-1969) och Constant Stas (1880-1967). Dagens VD Peter C. Stas är släkt med Constant Stas som grundade ett företag för tillverkning

av urtavlor 1904.

Aletta Bax och Peter C. Stas hade sedan länge ägnat sig åt sin hobby, klocktillverkning, vilket ledde till en första kollektion bestående av sex modeller med verk tillverkade av urmakare i Genève som presenterades 1992. Under 1997 flyttade företaget till Genève och det året producerade man över 24 000 klockor.

Ett typiskt kännetecken för serien Heartbeat som utvecklades under 1994 är, precis som namnet beskriver, en öppning i urtavlan där man kan se balansens svängningar som ett pulserande hjärta. Detta är något som bland andra Zenith kopierade långt senare. Frédérique Constant hade tyvärr inte tagit patent på ”urtavlehålet”.

Marknaden tog från början med viss tvekan emot det nya varumärket, men ganska snart vann de urmakarnas förtroende och 2011 låg produktionen på över 120 000 klockor som såldes i drygt 100 länder.

- Inledningsvis gjorde inte den

schweiziska klockindustrin tummen upp för oss, det var: ”very nice but bye bye”, säger Peter.

Paret bestämde sig för att fortsätta och göra klockor som de gillade, som kunderna också gillade och dessutom hade råd att köpa.

Bolagets mantra är: tillgänglig lyx.

- Konceptet bakom Frédérique Constant har alltid varit att skapa hög kvalitet, klassisk look och Genèvetillverkade klockor till förnuftiga priser, säger Peter som också berättar att man nu projekterar för en dubbelt så stor tillverkningsenhet vid sidan av den redan existerande. År 2001 började de utveckla den egna kalibern, som senare kom att kallas Heartbeat, i samarbete med École d’Horlogerie de Genève. Sju år efter det gör de ett verk med tourbillon som har oerhört hög precision och ytterligare fyra år senare kommer deras worldtimer som justeras enbart med hjälp av kronan.

Alla klockor monteras i den egna verkstaden, kostnaderna hålls nere genom en raffinerad urmakeripro-

cess, guldet är inte genomgjutet, boetterna i guldfärg har en fet doublé som är mycket hållbar. Det finns förstås även boetter i helguld men det är en mindre del av produktionen. Hantverket är skickligt utfört, guiochen på urtavlorna perfekt och safirglasen på bakboetten på plats. Även titthål i urtavlan som ger bäraren möjlighet att se verket ”under gång” är väl utförda. Ännu har man ingen COSC-certifiering eller Geneva Seals – men det kan komma menar Peter som säger: - Det fördyrar dock och ännu är det de kundvänliga priserna som är det bästa för vår försäljning.

På frågan om deras klockor skulle passera regelverket för de båda certifieringarna svarar Peter: - Javisst, inga problem, alla urverk testas både före och efter montering i tester som är strängare än COSC:s. Vi positionerar oss i ett segment som gör våra klockor tillgängliga för det stora flertalet kunder genom priser från cirka 6 500 kr till 35 000 kr, avslutar Peter.

jöö Sandström presented their first model, the Royal Steel Automatic, in 1993. The cases were different from anything else in the market, with the crown at two o’clock, a detail that especially attracted the aesthetics in the advertising business.

A strategic plan for upgrading Sjöö Sandström was launched almost two years ago.

The cramped but cozy office/workshop at Skeppsbron had become outgrown and the new address is Ringvägen 50. The location has plenty of space, the sidewalk is extra wide, the windows are large, the ceiling is high and

the light is fantastic. There is a showroom and an office as well as a workshop for assembly and service work. Customers are welcome to leave their watch for service or collect a watch you may have been given as a present, right out of the hand of the same watchmaker who just assembled it.

A whole new watch was introduced to retailers, international press and selected collectors on September 5 – the Sjöö Sandström Royal Capital model, with a movement from Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier in Switzerland.

The movement has a micro rotor and small second which keeps the thickness of the case down to only 7,8 mm.

Vaucher Manufacture of Switzerland has recently built a whole new production facility.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier is a highly respected movement manufacturer in the Swiss Jura mountains, producing movements for Richard Mille, Parmigiani and Hermès, among others. Their knowledge is huge and the precision of the movements is excellent.

One example is the Parmigiani Bugatti Supersport with a movement that is extremely complicated to produce. Vaucher’s Ateljer de d’eveloppement complication is very respected in the business for the high competence and creative visions of the employees.

– We have had the possibility of cooperating with a movement producer that very few can dream of working with, says Felix Formark, CEO of Sjöö Sandström.

The new model can be described as a combination of minimalism and the simplicity of Scandinavian design with Swiss functionality and perfect quality. The watch is a beautiful and elegant accessory with a suit but also with more leisurely wear. Being waterproof to 10 ATM makes the watch tougher than you might think. The model is up to Sjöö Sandström’s standards – good quality, well-designed, user friendly and can take a beating. The case having a 40 mm diameter and the bezel ring being interchangeable with a ring with diamonds, it is also an elegant watch for the ladies. The cases are produced by a manufacturer that Vaucher cooperates with, they are specialists in working with precious metals and among their customers are Patek Philippe.

– We want to challenge the Swiss with our new model, which is a part of our new launch.

Sjöö Sandström has put Sweden on the map of the world of watches. We have chosen this movement to make customers look at our brand with new eyes, we want to climb at least five steps up the ladder and are aiming for more international retailers, Felix Formark says.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier is one of the oldest small-scale watchmakers in the Swiss village of Fleurier, founded as early as 1730. The company is famous for educating others in the art of watchmaking and sharing their expertise with other exclusive brands in the business.

A bit of historiy Sjöö Sandström was founded in 1986 by two engineers interested in fine watches, Christer Sjöö and Mikael Sandström, who chose to give the first watch of their original model to king Carl XVI Gustaf. Two years later, the company was awarded the “Excellent Swedish design” prize for their first Swedish-made wristwatch.

In another four years, Sjöö Sandström launched their Chronolink Worldtimer with a pop-up case that had a digital face with a quartz movement as well as a mechanical analog face. It was admired by the world of watches, and one unit from the series, the Chronolink Swedish Blonde, is the only wristwatch made in Scandinavia that has become a part of the permanent exhibition at the museum in the capital of watches, La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. Being on display in the museum’s Contemporary Watchmaking category is a great honor.

Svensk design och schweizisk kvalitet Svenska Sjöö Sandström tar upp fighten med schweizarna i lyxsegmentet. Serien Royal Capitals första modell har just presenterats för kännarna.

Svenska Sjöö Sandström presenterade sin första klockmodell, Royal Steel Automatic, 1993.

Boetterna var borrade i svenskt stål och verken tillverkade i Schweiz. Klockan skilde sig från alla andra på marknaden med kronan placerad vid klockan två, en detalj som attraherade framför allt esteterna inom reklambranschen.

För knappt två år sedan sjösattes en strategisk plan rörande uppgradering av Sjöö Sandström. Det trånga men mysiga kontoret/ serviceverkstaden på Skeppsbron hade man växt ur och ny adress är Ringvägen 50. Lokalen är spatiös, trottoaren extra bred, fönstren stora, takhöjden enorm och ljuset fantastiskt. Här finns showroom, kontor samt monteringsoch serviceverkstad. Här kan du lämna in din klocka för service eller hämta ut den klocka du kanske fått i present, direkt ur handen på den urmakare som monterat just ditt ur.

Den femte september presenterades för återförsäljare, internationell press och utvalda samlare en helt ny klocka, Sjöö Sandströms modell Royal Capital, med urverk från schweiziska Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. Verket har mikrorotor och liten sekund vilket gör att tjockleken på boetten bara är 7,8 mm.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier är en mycket respekterad urverkstillverkare i schweiziska Jurabergen som tillverkar urverk för bland andra Richard Mille, Parmigiani och Hermès. Kunnigheten är enorm och precisionen på verken excellent. Ett exempel på detta är Parmigianis Bugatti Supersport med ett verk som är extremt komplicerat att tillverka. Vauchers Ateljer de d’eveloppement complication är inom branschen respekterad för medarbetarnas höga kompetens och kreativa visioner.

– Vi har haft möjlighet att få samarbeta med en urverksleverantör som det är få förunnat att jobba med, säger Felix Formark, VD för Sjöö Sandström.

Man kan säga att den nya klockmodellen kombinerar minimalism och enkelheten i skandinavisk design med funktion och schwei-

zisk kvalitet på perfektion. Klockan är snygg, elegant till kostym men passar även till en ledigare klädstil. Att klockan är vattentät till 10 ATM gör att den är tåligare än vad man kanske tror. Modellen följer Sjöö Sandströms kod; god kvalitet, väldesignad, användarvänlig och kunna tåla tuffa tag. Eftersom boetten är 40 mm och boettringen går att byta till en med diamanter är detta även en elegant damklocka.

Boetterna är tillverkade av ett företag som Vaucher samarbetar med, de är specialiserade på att arbeta i ädla metaller och bland deras kunder hittar vi bland andra Patek Philippe.

– Vi vill utmana schweizarna med vår nya modell som är ett led i vår nysatsning. Sjöö Sandström har satt Sverige på klockkartan genom innovativ design och unikt hantverk. Vi har valt detta verk för att vi vill att man ska se på vårt varumärke med nya ögon, vi vill kliva upp minst fem steg och siktar på flera internationella återförsäljare, säger Felix Formark.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier är ett av de tidigaste småskaliga urmakerierna i byn Fleurier i Schweiz och har sitt ursprung redan 1730.

Företaget är känt för att utbilda i klockmakarkonsten och dela med sig av sin expertkunskap som urverkstillverkare med andra exklusiva tillverkare i samma bransch.

Perfect precision The watches are sturdy, reliable and can be repaired to run forever. They may not be among the most sophisticated, but they are rugged and strong and popular all over the world.

W

ith a Rolex on your wrist you can chop wood, go for a swim, play with your kids or attend a gala dinner. Your wrist will always be well dressed if you choose a Rolex, the brand that will never deliver anything that has not been tested over and over, the factory that chooses the certain over the uncertain and does not complicate their movements more than necessary. If Rolex develops a complication, it’s because they are convinced that their customers really need it. WTM has taken a closer look at how the company has evolved from the start.

On June 15, 1914, the Kew observatory in Great Britain awarded their first “Class A” certificate to a wristwatch. It was awarded to Rolex, at the time a small company, which surprised many. With this certificate, Rolex paved the way for the modern precision watches built to be worn on the wrist.

Only marine chronometers had earlier been awarded similar certificates.

wristwatches, and the company soon became the major producer of chronometercertified wristwatches. The tests for the certificate lasted for 45 days and were carried out in five different positions and three different temperatures – freezing cold, room temperature and in baking heat.

Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex in 1905 and was convinced from the start that wristworn watches would be the future of the industry. Right from the start he aimed at eliminating all the weak points of his watches, and strived for perfect precision.

Wilsdorf realized that precision would be necessary to make the popularity of the wristwatches last for a long time.

The first great success was in 1910 when the brand managed to get a chronometer certificate for a small movement from the official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland.

This achievement meant that Wilsdorf had proven that precision in a small format was not only possible in theory but also in practice.

Even though the wristwatches had perfect precision and a chronometer certificate, they were a lot more vulnerable to impact,

dust and moisture than the pocket watches.

That’s why Wilsdorf ’s next aim was to design a completely waterproof case, to protect the movement and preserve its precision.

The goal was reached in 1926 and the case was named the Oyster. It was the world’s first waterproof wristwatch with a screwedin crown, that because of its design was also dustproof. Later came a system with a rotor that turned the wearer’s movements into energy to make the watch self-winding.

In the early 1950’s Rolex produced almost 90 percent of all the certified chronometers in Switzerland, and came up with the term “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” that the company still proudly uses.

As one of the leading brands in the Swiss watch industry, based in Geneva, Rolex has an impressive reputation for quality all over the world. Over the years the brand has registered 400 patents and is still an independent manufacturer working as a foundation.

Rolex’s success and status can be trailed back to founder Hans Wilsdorf ’s entrepreneurial spirit, visionary ambition and never-ending quest for innovation and perfection.

Rolex designs, manufactures, assembles and tests their watches at their own facilities, they have 6,000 employees, sell their watches in a hundred countries and produce them at four different addresses in Switzerland: 1. At the head office in Geneva, all the administration is carried out as well as final assembly, quality control, sales and customer service.

2. In Chêne-Bourg, located in the canton of Geneva southeast of the city, is the facility for development, production of mother-ofpearl faces, as well as all the jewelry work.

3. Plan-les-Ouates, where wristbands and some other details are produced, is also in the canton of Geneva.

4. Bienne (Biel) in the watch district of Vallé de Joux is where the movements are produced and assembled.

The Rolex company is active in areas such as art, sports, entrepreneurial spirit and environment through a variety of sponsoring activities and philanthropic programs. Since 2011 the man in charge has been Gian Riccardo Marini, who has worked for Rolex for for-

ty years. Right now a new era has begun with Jean Frederic Dufour as CEO. Dufour used to work for Zenith, where he in an elegant manner put the spotlight on the El Primero movement (that Rolex used earlier in the Daytona) and Zenith’s high level of craftsmanship.

Jean Frederic is a genuine “watch person” with a background also from Chopard’s line of timepieces. He has great emotion and engagement in the manufacturing of movements, and we wait with anticipation to find out how he will put his mark on one of the most famous brands in the world.

Du är alltid rätt klädd om handleden om du väljer Rolex, varumärket som aldrig släpper ifrån sig något som inte är testat om och om igen och där de väljer det säkra för det osäkra och inte komplicerar urverken i onödan. Ska det vara en komplikation ska det vara något de är övertygade om att deras kunder kommer att behöva. WTM har tittat på hur företaget arbetat sedan starten.

Den 15 juni 1914 utfärdade observatoriet Kew i Storbritannien för första gången ett ”klass A” certifikat till ett armbandsur. Mottagare var Rolex, då ett litet företag, vilket förvånade omvärlden. I och med tilldelningen av detta certifikat kan man säga att Rolex lade grunden till de moderna precisionsuren anpassade för att bäras på handleden. Liknande certifikat hade tidigare i stort sett bara tilldelats marina kronometrar.

Att Rolex fick certifikatet gjorde att användandet av armbandsur ökade och företaget blev snabbt största tillverkare av kronometercertifierade armbandsur. Testerna

som föregick utdelningen av certifikatet pågick i 45 dagar och bestod av test i fem olika positioner, vid tre olika temperaturer; iskallt, ugnsvarmt och i rumstemperatur.

Hans Wilsdorf grundade Rolex 1905 och var tidigt helt övertygad om att armbandsur var framtiden för klockindustrin. Han ägnade sig redan från början åt att eliminera ett armbandsurs alla svaga punkter och sträva efter perfekt precision som var hans drivkraft. Han var övertygad om att precisionen var nödvändig för att armbandsurens popularitet skulle bli något bestående.

Den första framgången kom 1910 då varumärket lyckats få ett kronometercertifikat av det officiella Watch Rating Centre i schweiziska Bienne för ett litet verk. I och med detta hade Wilsdorf visat att precisionen i det lilla formatet inte bara var tänkbart utan något som också var möjligt att uppnå. Även om armbandsuret hade perfekt precision med kronometercertifikat och allt var de mycket mer sårbara för stötar, damm och fukt än fickuren. Därför blev Wilsdorfs nästa mål att tillverka en helt vattentät boett för att verket skulle kunna skyddas och behålla precisionen. Detta lyckades 1926 och boettmodellen döptes till Oyster.

Det var världens första vattentäta armbandsur med skruvad krona

som tack vare sin konstruktion även var dammtätt. Till detta kom sedan systemet med rotor som genom handens rörelser alstrade kraft så att verket blev ”självuppdragande”.

I början av 1950-talet tillverkade Rolex nästan 90 procent av alla certifierade kronometrar i Schweiz och man myntade då termen ”Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” som fortfarande hänger med.

Som ett av de ledande varumärkena inom den schweiziska klockindustrin, med säte i Genève, har Rolex ett enastående gott rykte över hela världen rörande kvalitet.

Dufour kommer närmast från Zenith där han på ett elegant sätt bland annat lyfte fram verket El Primero (som Rolex tidigare använde för att montera i Daytonan) och den hantverksskicklighet som Zenith besitter. Jean Frederic som är en riktig klockmänniska, med bakgrund även från Chopards klocklinjer, har en genuin känsla och engagemang i tillverkningen av urverk och vi väntar spänt på vad han ska sätta för avtryck inom ett av världens mest kända företag.

he watch industry keeps developing all the time, and more and more complicated watches keep hitting the market. The collectors’ attraction for these masterpieces is incredible. The huge

interest in top class, innovative craftsmanship makes it possible even for small manufacturers to create exceptional watches according to their own philosophy as to how a timepiece should look and function. Here, WTM presents eight watches from passionate creators.

Girard-Perregaux can count their days back to 1791 with address La Chaux de Fonds in the Jura mountains. Jean François Bautte paved the way for what would eventually become Girard-Perregaux. Bautte was a genius, and in many ways a pioneer in timekeeping for travellers. As early as 1820 he presented a caliber for pocket watches that showed two different time zones independently.

In 1852 Constant Girard founded his watch company and married Marie Perregaux, a direct descendant of Bautte, and that’s how Girard-Perregaux was born in 1856.

At the time of the industrial revolution in the mid-1800’s, the tycoons wanted to embrace the entire world during their expansion. Girard-Perregaux developed a suitable pocket watch that displayed the local

time in five different cities – San Francisco, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, New York and Paris. The quickly growing railroad system made it important with reliable time zones to connect the different timetables. With the Girard-Perregaux watch it became child’s play to keep track of time wherever in the world the owner was.

A new era for the company started when Luigi Macaluso, who was the Italian distributor for Girard-Perregaux in the 1980’s, took over the company in 1992. Things had been problematic for some time after the quartz revolution, but with Macaluso at the helm the company took back its leading role in Haute Horlogerie. Luigi’s role for the art of watchmaking at Girard-Perregaux can’t be emphasized enough, he definitely

preserved the company’s craftsman traditions in the best possible way. Today his son Stefano is in charge of product development since Luigi passed away much too early a few years ago.

Girard-Perregaux Traveller Large Date, Moon Phases & GMT in rose gold with a black face is 44 mm in diameter and equipped with a caliber Girard-Perregaux P03300-0095, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 46-hour power reserve.

Mechanics of, Art Deco, Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Big Date Moon Phases, gives the owner the possibility to see the movement in action through the transparent face. The movement is automatic with the rotor visible in the back of the case and a 46-hour power reserve.

Girard Perregaux Girard-Perregaux kan räkna sina dagar tillbaka till 1791 med adress La Chaux de Fonds i Jurabergen. Då, under industrirevolutionen i mitten av 1800-talet, ville magnaterna omfamna hela världen under sin expansion. Girard-Perregaux utvecklade då ett fickur som lät tala om sig, det visade den lokala tiden i fem städer: San Francisco, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, New York och Paris. Det var järnvägsnätets utbyggnad som gjorde det viktigt med enhetliga tidszoner för att tidtabellerna skulle kunna samordnas, och med Girard-Perregaux klocka var det en barnlek att hålla rätt på tiden var än bäraren befann sig i världen.

En ny era för företaget började

när Luigi Macaluso, som under 1980-talet var distributör för Girard-Perregaux i Italien, tog över företaget 1992. Man hade under en tid haft det kämpigt och inte riktigt hittat sin nisch efter quartzrevolutionen men under Macalusos ledning återtog företaget en ledande roll inom Haute Horlogerie.

Det går inte att nog betona Luigis roll för urmakerikonstens framskridande inom företaget där han på absolut bästa sätt tog vara på den hantverkstradition som fanns.

Idag är det sonen Stefano som är chef över produktutvecklingen eftersom Luigi härom året gick bort

alldeles för tidigt.

Parmigiani The story of Parmigiani Fleurier, like so many others, has its roots in an awkward situation. The year is 1974, Michel Parmigiani has just graduated from his watchmaking education, and he finds himself right in the rocky period when Japanese quartz watches flood the markets all over the world and no one needs a Swiss mechanical movement anymore. More than 90,000 watchmaking jobs are wiped out in an instant. In spite of everything, Michel Parmigiani opens his own workshop in Couvet in 1976 and with the stubbornness of a fool he struggles on with repairing historical mechanical watches. There are many who advice him to seek a different career – but he doesn’t care.

from the past, there’s no way you could ever believe that the tradition of watchmaking would cease to exist, Michel Parmigiani says.

During this period Michel also produced watches made to order, with complications where he often could make the technical decisions himself. His company Mesure et Art du Temps is a small workshop but very prosperous.

Everything changes in 1980 when Michel meets the Sandoz family that owns one of the most impressive collections of pocket watches and automatics in Switzerland. They are looking for someone to take the responsibility for restoring the pieces.

Michel accepts the job offer, his skills are appreciated, and he gets the chance to start

his own manufacture. The Parmigiani Fleurier brand is born in 1996.

The first years were dedicated to the development of the brand’s own calibers, like two automatic movements with eight days power reserve. Today each Parmigiani has an in-house movement. Michel’s creative freedom is considerable, as among other things the unique Bugatti watches prove.

The Tonda 1950 Squelette model reveals that the thin case contains a complicated miracle of craftsmanship. The caliber is PF705 and the platinum micro rotor is visible. The model is available in white or rose gold and as always the wristband is made by Hemès. The power reserve is 42 hours, the diameter is 39 mm and the thickness only 8,4 mm.

The Linde Werdelin brand was born out of a near-lethal accident in the Swiss Alps. In was in the winter of 1996 that Jorn Werdelin, an experienced alpinist and off-pist skier, was surprised by bad weather. He got lost, slipped down a cliff and broke his back.

In 2002, Jorn Werdelin and Morten Linde started working on a new idea – they wanted to develop a sports watch that could be combined with professional digital instruments to give essential information at the right time for skiers and divers.

- In our opinion, analog display is the best way to read time and digital display is

superior when it comes to adding technical details. A perfect combination of the analog and digital gives both style and function without any compromises, says Linde.

A carefully designed sports watch for all situations can be turned into a precision instrument with an extra diving or skiing instrument. You could say that Linde Werdelin combines the best of Swiss craftsmanship, Danish design, and ingenuity. The instruments are at the avant garde of digital technology and are developed and produced in-house by Linde Werdelin.

Oktopus BluMoon Linde Werdelin’s new model with Titan Grade 5 is manufactured in a limited series with only 59 pieces. The Oktopus BluMoon shows hours, minutes and seconds and also wears the iconic moon that has become a trademark of Linde Werdelin. The case is 44 x 46 x 15 mm, the movement is a tailor-made LW calibre with in-house moon phase. The power reserve is 44 hours and the price will be around 13,300 euros plus tax.

- The ultimate watch can only be created by combining the materials with technical engineering and inventiveness under the right circumstances, Richard Mille says.

The movements are produced with the help of the very best of today’s Swiss watchmakers. The production partners are chosen for their knowledge, their mechanical skills and not least their deep and solid understanding of Richard Mille’s philosophy and strategy.

The RM 33-01 with an automatic movement is one of the watches that will be

presented at SIHH in Geneva in January, and WTM have gotten a special introduction to the model. The movement is a skeletoned caliber RMXP3 with a platinum micro rotor. Even though the tonneau shape is the one usually most familiar from Richard Mille, there are also a number of round models. The new RM 33-01 is round with graphic numbers that increase the watch’s dynamic energy. They give the face optimal readability and let the wearer admire the movement’s complex action and titanium bridges. The diameter is 45,7 mm and thickness 9,2 mm, the watch has a rubber wristband with a folding clasp and it’s waterproof to 30 meters.

Greubel Forsey Their watches sent ripples through the audience the first time they were shown at SIHH in Geneva. Many felt – and still feel – these are the best watches they have ever seen.

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey started working together in 1992 at Renaud & Papi where they developed complicated movements. Their working relationship for over two decades is based on their common technical creativity and quest for extreme perfection.

In 1999 they started planning a new generation of tourbillon designed to improve the precision of mechanical watches. Four years later they presented Greubel Forsey to much acclaim from watch aficionados for their innovative model Double Tourbillon 30°. The watch made its debut at the 2004 Basel fair and made a sensational impression.

Their very first creation, the Double Tourbillon 30°, embodies the company values like inventiveness, competence and pride of craftsmanship. By changing the concept of what a tourbillon is supposed to be, they set their agenda for the company’s first decade.

They explore the thin line between science and art. Besides technical perfection they are very serious about the aesthetics of their products. Technological innovation and revolutionary design are evident in every one of Greubel Forsey’s watches. This doubly creative philosophy has made it possible

QP à Équation in white gold, the watch that marks Greubel & Forsey’s ten-year anniversary, has a movement that has demanded ten years of research. The diameter is 43,5 mm and thickness 16 mm. The brand was founded in Geneva in 2004 and quickly became known for their unique concept based on famous contemporary legends. Romain Jerome give their customers the opportunity to own a piece of history by creating watches inspired by and with actual DNA from a very special place or legend. Romaine Jerome builds their philosophy on the power of the ocean, the air and the earth. They have made watches that contain recycled steel from the luxury liner Titanic and from the Apollo 11, dust from to moon and volcanic lava.

They like to state that it’s never too late to try to bring about change, and it’s never too early to remember. 25 years have passed since the Wall went down, and this watch has been designed with the help of the East Side Gallery in Berlin. After the reunion in 1990 the East Side Gallery engaged 118 artists from all over the world to paint a 1,300 meter stretch of the east side of the Wall – the longest outdoor art exhibition ever. It’s also one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions in Germany. But now the artwork is threatened by pollution, vandalism and destruction.

decided to help preserve the art by presenting the profits for the Berlin-DNA watch to the East Side Gallery, says Manuel Emch, CEO for Romain Jerome.

- The Wall is an ever-present reminder of passion and engagement in freedom for humanity. This is exactly the kind of legend that spurs us on.

The back of the watch, limited to 25 units, is decorated with one of the most famous paintings in the Wall of East Side Gallery: ”Brother Kiss” by the Russian artist Dmitri Vrubel, inspired by a picture taken in 1979 when Soviet Union leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German president Erich Honecker kiss each other after Brezhnev’s speech at the 30th anniversary of the birth of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik.

Spaniard Franc Vila was interested in wristwatches even as a young boy, and had dreams early on about his own perfectly engineered watch. After finishing studies in chemistry, philosophy and Fine Art, and being a collector of art and fountain pens, he decided in the year 2000 to create his own brand.

His goal was to produce the best high quality mechanical watches ever.

With Vila’s knowledge in chemistry and art, his watch design resulted in “esprit unique” which has become his trademark since the start. Franc Vila premiered his watches at Baselworld 2005. They were full of complications like perpetual calendars, Flyback Chronograph and tourbillons with minute repeater. His passion for quality

and exclusivity make the production figures very small.

- We live in the present and our watches should be contemporary, but with respect for tradition and exclusivity which is the main focus of luxury mixed with avant-garde competence. I design my watches to satisfy my own demands and my taste for how time should be presented, Franc Vila says.

- The original idea was to create an exclusive and modern watch built with extreme quality demands in every detail. When I started out, it was with one foot in the past and the other in the future.

A large part of Franc Vila’s success is that he has been consistent with a very personal concept with the philosophy of his brand.

- I can’t make simple watches, that’s why our production will always be very limited, from 8 pieces to 88 which is really quite absurd within the luxury segment. Our distribution is very limited as well. My motivation is to try to create watches for the future, watches that I myself like, and I try to do things that no one has ever done before, Franc concludes.

The model Cobra FV 18E Manual Suspended Skelett is made in a combination of titanium, steel and carbon fiber. The movement is suspended in a system of springs. The watch has a sapphire glass and is waterproof to 100 meters, with a 44 to 46 hour power reserve. The wristband is made of black rubber and the series is limited to 88 watches.

In the late 1800’s the young Estelle Arpels, daughter of a diamond dealer, met Alfred Van Cleef who was the son of a stonecutter. It was a start of a romantic relationship but also a business venture. “We have always been inspired by the unique and creative energy of love – after all, love is the reason why all of us exist”, people at the company are fond of saying.

Estelle and Alfred got married in 1895 and they had a lot in common, such as enthusiasm, pioneer spirit, ethics, family solidarity and a great passion for noble stones. They wanted to create something together and founded the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906 they were joined by Estelle’s brother Charles, an efficient salesman who worked wonders for the business in their store on the Place Vendôme in the middle of Paris. Two years later, Estelle’s brother Julien also started working for

the company and in 1912 the third brother, Louis, also joined in. the following years, the siblings managed to make Van Cleef & Arpels synonymous with the most exclusive jewelry that money could buy at the time.

Van Cleef & Arpels produced their first watches back in the 1920’s, but it wasn’t until 1935 that they really found their own distinctive style in the world of watches. Today they are a serious player in the area of Haute Horlogerie and hire only the best movement engineers for their revolutionary watches.

At the latest fair in Geneva we were introduced to the new Midnight Planétarium Poetic Complication in rose gold. The case measures 44 mm in diameter and the face shows a big part of our solar system.

Six planets keep moving around the sun on the watch’s face – Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, all the planets that are visible from Earth. Their movements are powered by a self-winding mechanism with a module that has been developed with the help of Maison Christiaan van der Klaauw and is made out of 396 separate parts. All of the planets in the module are true to their actual orbit. This means that Saturn will complete one cycle around the watch’s face in more than 29 years. Jupiter makes the full circle in 12 years, Mars in 687 days, Earth in 365 days, Venus in 224 days and Mercury in 88 days.

A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Striking Time

hree years ago, A. Lange & Söhne (AL&S) signed a sponsorship deal with Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the finest classic car show in Europe since 1929. The winner, elected by an international jury, gets to receive a custom made AL&S watch, highly coveted by collectors. Last year Ralph Lauren became the winner with his 1938 Bugatti. Rumor has it that Lauren was offered many tens of thousands of euros for the watch, but chose to keep it. This year’s winner was a 1956 Maserati owned by Albert Speiss from Switzerland who happily wears a unique AL&S on his wrist today.

AL&S was founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in the city of Glashütte close to Dresden, Germany. The company produced top quality pocket watches, and their products soon became world famous. The production continued with the next generations, and many big names and prominent people liked to wear AL&S watches.

After the end of World War 2, the Soviet administration expropriated the company’s assets and the AL&S brand disappeared.

But only a few weeks after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the founder’s grandson Walter Lange made his move. He wanted to reintroduce the brand and once more produce the world’s finest watches with the Lange name on the face.

The company was reconstructed with the help of watch world visionary Günter Blümlein (1943-2001). More assistance came from the brands IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre, also owned by Blümlein. In 1994 A. Lange & Söhne presented four new wristwatches

full of watchmaking tradition and upgraded with modern technology.

All AL&S cases are made out of gold or platinum, and needless to say the movements are produced in-house. We spoke to Anthony de Haas, manager of movement development for the last ten years, about after sale service and his views on new materials: – We have an obligation to our customers of always being able to repair the watches that we make. If parts are needed that we don’t have, we will make them. That’s why I don’t want to include materials like silicon and silicium – we can’t be sure about supply and life expectancy over really long periods of time.

The watches are visually distinct with an asymmetrical face layout without overlapping of the different time displays. AL&S are famous for their complicated watches with chronographs, split second, eternity calendars, world time zones, tourbillons, moon phases and minute repeaters. The engravings are carried out by specialists and all parts are treated – even those that only a watchmaker carrying out service work will ever be able to see. ­– Perfect engraving on every part of the entire movement is something we will never compromise, Anthony says.

– It’s actually possible to identify which engraver has worked on each separate movement. Not to an amateur, but there is a kind of secret signature.

This is definitely “understated luxury” at its best, and since production is limited to around 5,000 watches each year, there are only a few lucky customers that get to wear an AL&S watch on their wrists.

Present CEO Wilhelm Schmid took over in 2011 as leader of this great team of craftsmen and innovators in the field of watchmaking. Walter Lange is still active in the company, but likes to stay out of the daily work since he turned 90 years old last summer.

Lange was born into the watchmaker family, studied in Austria, was wounded in the war, saw his home village destroyed by air raids and managed to escape from slavery in a uranium mine. While celebrating his 90th birthday, he told us: – By the fall of the Berlin Wall, I was retired from work but couldn’t miss the chance of trying to bring my heritage back to life.

December 7, 1990, is one of the greatest days of my life. That’s when I registered the brand once again in a building I had borrowed from an old classmate from school in Glashütte where we could start all over again. Finally in the year 2000 we were allowed to buy the building from the city of Glashütte.

Without the help of Mr. Blümlein the project would never have been possible, Walter Lange says.

– He was an excellent strategist and had great knowledge about watches and marketing. The days before the introduction of our first collection in October 1994 were very exciting, we shared the same office and discussed what to say at our first press conference. Another important year was 2013 when we first showed our Grand Complication, limited to only six watches. At that time I felt we had done everything right. I was extremely proud of our company, our heritage and our employees.

pånyttfödd efter berlinmurens fall En av världens mest respekterade urverkstillverkare ligger i södra Tyskland. Företaget har haft en strapatsrik resa till dags dato, och nu har världen återigen fått upp ögonen för de vackra klockorna från forna Östtyskland.

A. Lange & Söhne (AL&S) klev för tre år sedan i ett sponsoravtal med Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, en uppvisning av klassiska bilar, den finaste i Europa och som startade 1929. Vinnaren, som utses av en internationell jury, får en specialtillverkad AL&S-klocka, hett eftertraktad av samlarna. Förra året fick Ralph Lauren motta den som vinnare med sin Bugatti från 1938.

Lauren lär ha blivit erbjuden många hundratusentals kronor för uret, men valde att behålla det. Årets vinnare av utställningen blev en Maserati från 1956 ägd av schweizaren Albert Speiss, så nu bär även han en unik klocka på sin handled.

Han ville starta om tillverkningen och åter göra världens bästa klockor med namnet Lange på urtavlan.

Tillsammans med visionären inom klockvärlden Günter Blümlein (1943-2001) återställdes bolaget.

Starten skedde med hjälp av IWC och Jaeger-LeCoultre, som Blümlein ägde.

Och 1994 presenterade A. Lange & Söhne sina första fyra armbandsur fulla av urmakartradition uppgraderad med dagens kunskap.

Alla AL&S boetter görs i guld eller platina och verken är förstås tillverkade inhouse. Anthony de Haas, chef över urverksutvecklingen sedan tio, år säger när jag frågar om after sale service och hans förhållande till nya material: – Vi har skyldighet gentemot våra kunder att alltid kunna reparera de klockor vi tillverkar. Om delarna inte finns tillverkar vi de som behövs. Det är av den anledningen jag utesluter material som silikon och silicium eftersom jag

inte vet hur tillgång och hållbarhet håller sig över riktigt lång tid.

Utseendemässigt är klockorna distinkta med en asymmetrisk layout av urtavlan utan överlappning av de olika tidvisningarna. AL&S är kända för sina komplicerade klockor som kronografer och split-sekund, evighetskalendrar, världstider, tourbilloner, månfaser och minute repeaters. – Det går att se vem som graverat vilket verk beroende på hur den är utförd. Det är omöjligt för en amatör, men verken innehåller på så sätt en hemlig signatur.

Detta är ”understated luxury” när den är som bäst och eftersom produktionen bara är cirka 5 000 exemplar per år är det få förunnat att bära ett AL&S -ur på handleden.

Nuvarande VD Wilhelm Schmid tog 2011 över dirigentpinnen över denna orkester full av skickliga hantverkare och innovatörer inom urverksutveckling. Walter Lange är fortfarande verksam inom företaget men tar det mycket lugnt och i somras fyllde han 90 år.

Lange föddes in i en urmakarfamilj, utbildade sig i Österrike, blev skadad i kriget, såg sin hemby bombas och flydde undan straffarbete i en urangruva. Han berättar för oss i samband med firandet av födelsedagen: – När Berlinmuren föll hade jag gått i pension, men kunde inte låta bli att försöka återuppliva mitt arv.

Den 7 december 1990 är bland de största dagarna i mitt liv. Jag omregistrerade varumärket med hjälp av en lånad adress till en före detta klasskamrat från skolan i Glashütte och kunde starta om helt från början, men det var inte förrän år 2000 som vi kunde köpa tillbaka byggnaden från staden Glashütte.

– Utan Blümlein skulle det aldrig ha gått. Han var en utmärkt strateg och hade talang för klockor och marknadsföring. Dagarna före presentationen av första kollektionen i oktober 1994 var spännande, vi delade kontor och diskuterade vad vi skulle säga på vår första presskonferens. Ett annat år som etsat sig fast är 2013. Då visade vi för först gången visade vår Grand Complication tillverkad i en begränsad upplaga av sex stycken.

Då kände jag att vi gjort allt rätt.

Jag var oerhört stolt över traditionen, företaget och vår personal.

n the early 1960’s a competition was arranged in several places in the world, where the goal was to develop an automatic chronograph at any cost. In the Swiss Jura mountains there was a conglomeration of companies striving to achieve success together – Heuer, Buren, Hamilton, Breitling and Dubuis. On the other side of the globe, Seiko stubbornly struggled on. But the ”underdog” Zenith from Le Locle, Switzerland, won and could present their finished movement in 1965. A couple of years have passed from the blueprint stage to a working prototype, the first Swiss made self-winding

movement with an integrated chronograph.

The movement was launched January 10, 1969, under the name El Primero and has had a strong cult following ever since. After almost fifty years it is still the best chronograph movement within its price range.

Zenith’s watchmakers had accepted the challenge of designing a caliber that was completely integrated, without a module and with a central rotor running on ball bearings.

It would also have to beat at a high frequency to be the most precise chronograph. To complicate things even further, the parts had to be in miniature to make room for the mechanism of the date display.

Le Locle is the birthplace of Zenith and its founder Georges Favre-Jacot, who started out as a watchmaker’s apprentice and realized early on that the production would have to be rationalized and that new assembly methods were necessary. The craftsmen were scattered in little workshops all around the village, some at a considerable distance, while others worked out of their private homes. FavreJacot understood the advantages of collecting all this talent under one roof. He started his own company in 1865, at only 22 years of age, and erected a big and well-illuminated factory building. By gathering all the local craftsmen he had the means to complete new designs and changing the conditions of contemporary watchmaking.

With the entire production chain under one common roof, quality control became easier and Favre-Jacot could supply the demand for highly accurate timepieces. Precision became a big part of the brand’s image.

A solid reputation for trustworthy products allowed Zenith to get well established in the international market by the second half of the 19th century.

Favre-Jacot was a true visionary, and with the help of one of the top architects of the time, Alphonse Laverriere who strived to give industrial products an aesthetic and artistic dimension, he created what we today call ”branding”. The two men made detailed plans for how the shops would look, how the logotype should be used, the design of the packaging, etc. In 1911 the name Zenith was introduced but the address remained Le Locle.

of production in 1975 because the owners at the time wanted to focus on quartz movements. The late 1970’s were a horrible period for the Swiss watch production, when many producers went bankrupt because of the success of the quartz movements. The El Primero was put on the back burner and the future looked grim for the Zenith watches.

In 1983, both Ebel and Rolex wanted to buy the spectacular movement and Zenith would be able to produce it from their old stockpile of parts that many had already forgotten about. The company wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet, and a couple of later the El Primero was back in production.

The movement was way ahead of its time when it was introduced. Watch lovers were impressed by the “floating” second hand and the 10th of a second precision timing.

In 1999 the conglomerate LVMH made an offer to Zenith’s owners, the Dixi Group, who had reintroduced the mechanical movement. The Dixi Group took the offer and LVMH banged on the big PR drum for El Primero’s cult status. Zenith’s watches got new perforated faces to show off the movement. Jean Frederic Dufour, Zenith CEO 2009-2014 and a prime mover in the watch business (today CEO at Rolex) boosted El Primero’s status even more with several new models while underlining the brand’s rich and proud heritage.

A dedicated fellow reporter from Germany, specialized in movement constructions, says: “El Primero has withstood the test of time and the movement is likely to be the most important automatic chronograph caliber ever created”, a statement that shows a

professional connoisseur’s viewpoint.

Throughout the years many watches from the top manufacturers have been fitted with El Primero movements, like the Daytona from Rolex and Ebel’s classic chronograph.

Another customer in Le Locle have been the experimental brand Urwek. When Louis Vuitton launched the Tambour model it had an El Primero movement, making it a steal when LV presented their first watch collection. Today Zenith is only allowed to share the movement with its sister brands in the LVMH group, and logically the first Bvlgari watch with an El Primero movement was introduced last year.

På andra sidan jordklotet kämpade japanska Seiko envist vidare. Men det var ”underdoggen” Zenith från Le Locle i Schweiz som vann och som stod där med ett färdigt verk 1965. Det hade tagit dem ett par år från skiss till färdig prototyp och detta var det första schweizisktillverkade självuppdragande (automatiska) urverket med integrerad kronograf.

Verket döptes inför lanseringen, som genomfördes den 10 januari 1969, till El Primero (den första på esperanto) och har sedan dess betraktats som ett urverk med hög kultstatus. Det är fortfarande efter nästan 50 år det bästa kronografverket i sin prisklass.

Uppgiften som Zeniths urmakare fick var att konstruera en kaliber helt integrerad, utan modul och med en central rotor monterad på kullager. Den skulle också behöva slå på en hög frekvens för att vara den mest exakta kronografen. För att komplicera saken ytterligare var man tvungen att miniatyrisera delarna eftersom mekanism för datumvisning också skulle få plats.

Det är i Le Locle som Zeniths vagga ligger och dess grundare Georges Favre-Jacot, lärling i en urmakarverkstad, förstod tidigt att man måste rationalisera tillverkningen och skapa nya produktionsmetoder. Han såg att hantverkarna var utspridda i små verkstäder runt om i byn och många på rätt långt avstånd, många arbetade dessutom hemma. Favre-Jacot insåg vikten av att samla så mycket som möjligt under ett tak. När han som egen företagare 1865, bara 22 år gammal, lät bygga stora ljusa lokaler samlade han hela yrkeskåren som krävdes för att en klocka skulle bli klar och var därmed med om att förändra urmakeriets förutsättningar.

Med tillverkning under samma tak blev det lättare att ha kontroll på kvalitet och Favre-Jacot kunde möta efterfrågan på ur som visade tiden korrekt. Precision blev en stor del av företagets varumärke.

Goda resultat, pålitliga klockor och bra rykte gjorde att Zenith etablerade sig ordentligt på den internationella marknaden under senare delen av andra halvan av 1800-talet.

Favre-Jacot var visionär och tillsammans med dåtidens topparkitekt Alphonse Laverriere som arbetade för att industriprodukter skulle ha en estetisk och konstnärlig dimension skapade de det man idag kallar ”branding”. De påverkade hur butikerna såg ut,

El Primero-verket gick tyvärr ur produktion 1975 på grund av att dåvarande ägarna till Zenith ville flytta fokus till quartzverk. Slutet på 1970-talet var en hemsk tid för urverkstillverkningen i Schweiz – många företag stupade på grund av quartzverkets framgång. El Primero förvisades till hyllorna och för Zenithklockorna såg framtiden mörk ut. År 1983, tack vare köpintresse av det märkvärdiga verket från både Ebel och Rolex, kunde Zenith tillverka urverk genom att använda sitt gamla (och av de flesta totalt bortglömda) lager. Men skam den som ger sig – efter ett par år senare var El Primero tillbaka i produktionen.

Urverket var när det kom långt före sin tid med den jämna gången för sekundvisaren, älskad av ”watch lovers” och noggrannheten i tidtagningen ner till 1/10 av en sekund. År 1999 kastade konglomeratet LVMH så långa blickar på den unika urverkstillverkaren att de lämnade ett bud till dåvarande ägarna Dixi-gruppen som var de som återupptagit tillverkningen av mekaniska verket. Dixi-gruppen

antog budet och i LVMH:s regi blåstes liv i El Primeros kultstatus och den byggdes samtidigt på så mycket det gick. Zeniths klockor fick hål i urtavlorna så att verket blev synligt och under ledning av Jean Frederic Dufour, VD på Zenith 2009-2014 och en skicklig aktör inom klockvärlden (numera VD för Rolex) byggdes El Primeros status upp ännu mer genom flera nya modeller och en rejäl injektion av historik till marknaden.

En hängiven journalistkollega från Tyskland med urverkskonstruktioner som specialitet säger: ”El Primero har stått sig genom tiderna och verket är sannolikt den viktigaste automatiska kronografkalibern som någonsin skapats”, ett uttalande som visar hur klockkännare ser på verket.

Under årens lopp är det många kända varumärkens klockor som utrustats med El Primero-verk, två tidigare nämnda exempel är Rolex med Daytona och Ebel med sin klassiska kronograf, även experimentella Urwek har varit kund i Le Locle. När Louis Vuitton lanserade modellen Tambour satt det El Primero-verk i boetterna vilket gjorde att just den modellen ansågs som ett klipp när företaget presenterade sin första klockkollektion.

Idag får Zenith bara leverera verket till sina systervarumärken inom LVMH-gruppen, så förra året visades den första Bvlgariklockan med El Primero-verk upp.

T he best of the best The 27th Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris was arranged this fall. The location was as usual the magnificent Grand Palais next to the Place de la Concorde.

T

his remarkable fair and show has been arranged bi-annually since 1962. For ten days the best of the best when it comes to jewelry, art and antiques is put on display. In later years watches have also been included in the mix. Watches with jewels have increased in number, and the pieces shown are made in only one unique example. You can imagine how much money they are worth. I was there for a few days to check out these delights for WTM. Piaget, watchmakers since 1894, was asked by their customers to produce matching jewelry to their skillfully made watches.

They were happy to oblige which explains why the knowledge about jewelry is considerable in the company. Their manufacture of jewelry exploded in the early 2000’s in quality as well as quantity. The beautifully designed collection at the latest Biennale is inspired by their heritage from the 1960’s and 70’s with a unique elegance where the stones speak for themselves. The Piagets of the 70’s are typically thin watches with faces highlighted with jewels. These watches are true pieces of art, and we can tell that the Piaget design studio has finally let themselves be inspired by their archives and the watches in their museum collection.

It’s an interesting fact that more and more people choose to spend huge sums on expensive watches and jewelry. Piaget’s jewelry marketing manager, Jean-Bernard Forot, informed me that one out of four billionaires in Shanghai is a woman and that these ladies buy their own watches and jewelry. This is one of the reasons why the unique objects at the top of the price range are so highly sought after.

Even though there is no such market here in Sweden, it’s a delight to see these pieces. The next fair is in 2016, many consider it worth the trip, and it’s open for the general public except for the first day.

det bästa av det bästa Biennale des Antiquaires i Paris genomfördes under hösten för 27:e gången. Platsen var som vanligt det praktfulla Grand Palais ett stenkast från Place de la Concorde.

Denna märkvärdiga mässa/ utställning har arrangerats vartannat år sedan 1962 och här visas under tio dagar bara det bästa av det bästa inom juveler, konst och antikviteter. På senare år har även klockor gjort entré och de juvelbesatta klockorna har de senaste tillfällena ökat i omfattning. De smycken och klockor som visas är tillverkade i ett enda

unikt exemplar och kostar därför svindlande summor pengar. Jag var på plats under några dagar och synade dessa ljuvligheter för WTM:s räkning.

Piaget som startade 1894 som urmakare blev av kunderna ombedda att tillverka matchande smycken till de skickligt utförda klockor de sålde, vilket de gärna gjorde. Därför är juvelkunnandet stort sedan länge inom företaget.

I början av 2000-talet exploderade deras juveltillverkning både i antal smycken och respekt för vad de levererade i form av elegant design. Kollektionen av

smycken och klockor som de visade på senaste Biennalen är inspirerad av deras formspråk från 1960- och 1970-talen tillsammans med en enastående elegans i helt nya former där stenarna får tala för sig själva. Signifikant för Piaget under 1970-talet är de tunna klockorna med urtavlor i ädelstenar. Dessa klockor är konstverk och nu äntligen kan vi se att formgivarna i Piagets designstudio tittat i de gamla arkiven och på de klockor de har i sin museikollektion.

Intressant är att fler och fler väljer att lägga stora pengar på

dyrbara klockor och juveler. Av Piagets marknadschef på juvelsidan Jean-Bernard Forot får jag vet att var fjärde miljardär i Shanghai är kvinna, och att de gärna väljer att köpa sina klockor och smycken själva. Detta gör att dessa unika föremål i absolut högsta prissegmentet är så hett eftertraktade. Även om marknaden inte finns i Sverige är det ett nöje att få se dessa alster och nästa mässa kommer om två år.

Många anser den vara värd en resa och mässan är alla dagarna utom den första öppen för allmänheten.

Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest watch brand with continuous production ever since the start back in 1755.

acheron Constantin mixes ancient knowledge with the latest tools to be able to produce increasingly sophisticated watches. As the oldest manufacturer in the world, they have never stopped renewing themselves and coming up with new inventions. They stand for a timelessly refined aesthetic for connoisseurs.

It was in 1755 that Jean-Marc Vacheron opened his workshop in the heart of Geneva and hired his first apprentice. Vacheron also

came up with the expression: “Do it even better if it’s possible – which it always is!”

Their trademark quickly became exceptional craftsmanship, and their fame spread far across the borders of Switzerland.

Talent, knowledge and passion were very deliberately passed on from Vacheron to the next generations. In the early 1800’s, his heirs met an experienced businessman and phenomenal salesman, François Constantin.

The Vacherons were craftsmen but selling wasn’t their strongest point, and in 1819, Constantin joined in as a full partner of

the company. He criss-crossed Europe for decades and opened many new markets for the watches that were now named Vacheron et Constantin.

In 1880, Vacheron Constantin registered the Maltese cross as the symbol of their brand because it resembles one of the movement’s tiny parts. Their movements aren’t only extremely well decorated, but also wear the shield that is the official hallmark of the canton of Geneva. This marking was introduced in the 1800’s since there were black market copies even back then. The

Twelve criteria (modified through the years to cope with changes in the business) make up the demands that have to be fulfilled for permission to use the hallmark, in addition to the movement having to be assembled in Geneva. Only a handful of manufacturers measure up to these demands.

Vacheron Constantin are active at three addresses: Maison Vacheron Constantin in the heart of Geneva at Quai de l’Ile 7, in Planles-Ouates (Geneva) and in Ateliers Vallée de

Joux (Le Brassus). The workforce consists of around 400 watchmakers, engineers, designers, craftsmen and other personnel in Switzerland and another 400 in distribution and sales around the globe.

They tell us that the five sacred rules in their company philosophy are: 1. Always aiming for top quality by technical knowledge, aesthetic elegance and immaculate finish.

2. To support creativity. Everyone has a spark of it. New ideas and inventions

should always be encouraged.

3. To engage in social responsibility and openness, financial realities are compatible with social awareness. Learn from other trades, technologies and above all from other cultures.

4. To respect traditions and keep them alive, preserve the knowledge and pass it on.

Brief facts: 1889 Vacheron Constantin presents their first ladies’ watch at the Paris World Fair.

1912 Vacheron Constantin launches their first wristwatch with a tonneau-shaped case.

1934 At a request from King Farouk of Egypt, Vacheron Constantin creates one of the most complicated pocket watches of the period.

1955 200 years after their introduction, they present the thinnest movement the world had ever seen at the time – the Calibre 1003, only 1,64 mm thick.

2005 For the 250th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin presents the Tour de l’Ile, the world’s most complicated wristwatch with 16 complications, in a limited series of seven units.

År 1880 registrerade Vacheron Constantin malteserkorset som varumärkessymbol, som i sin form är baserad på en liten del i urverket.

Deras urverk är förutom att de är exceptionellt väl dekorerade även märkta med Genèves hallmärke som föreställer kantonen Genèves officiella vapensköld. Märket infördes under 1800-talet eftersom kopior redan då fanns. Stämpeln är en garanti för ursprung, precision och hantverksmässig perfektion.

Tolv kriterier (som modifierats genom åren för att möta förändringar i branschen) ingår i de krav som måste uppfyllas för att få använda hallmärket förutom att verkets monteringsort måste vara Genève. Endast en handfull tillverkare

passerar detta åtråvärda nålsöga.

The brand is primarily connected to F1, horse polo and sailing. The management has realized there are a dwindling number of women in these sports, and now they are aiming at the ladies through some amazing female golfers.

t the latest Geneva fair, Richard Mille showed several new models designed for female wrists.

- These watches aren’t just some shrunken men’s models, but unique in their design, says Alice Keen from Richard Mille when we have a chat between the swings of the stars at the LaCoste Ladies Open in Biarritz.

- We have a very broad range of models because there are such a vast number of combinations of material and stones, but usually the most highly visible model in

pictures becomes the big seller. Those really interested can have a look at most of our assortment in our own store in London that opened quite recently.

You can play horse polo or drive a Formula One car with an advanced Richard Mille watch on your wrist, as proved by F1 driver Philippe Massa and others. But what about golf? We have been told many golfers don’t want to wear a watch during play. I asked Dianna Luna, a successful Italian golfer aiming for the next Olympics where golf will be one of the disciplines. Dianna is highly fashionconscious, is a role model to young women in

Italy with an interest in golf, and she is also a future mother of two.

- I don’t have a problem with it, even though it’s hardly the thinnest watch in the world. It follows the wrist perfectly and doesn’t interfere with the game in any way. Sure my dream would be to design a model of my own, but for now I’m happy to be wearing a RM 07 on my wrist, Dianna Luna says before heading out for some warm-up swings before the game gets serious.

The Novak Djokovic Foundation was founded in 2007 and the goal is to help vulnerable children, above all in his homeland, Serbia. The foundation supports several schools and other institutions for education and sports, making a decent childhood possible.

The needs are huge and have increased because of the devastating floods that wrecked the region in May. Right now the foundation is supporting the reconstruction work.

Seiko, also owner of the Lorus brand, manufactures a series of watches that since this summer are sold to support the foundation. Deliveries have already been

made to Europe, South Africa and Australia to be passed on to every market where Seiko operates.

- Naturally I’m happy and grateful that Seiko is helping the foundation, especially now that so many children in Serbia have had their lives ruined by the floods and are in a very tight spot, Djokovic says over lunch.

Seiko, som även äger varumärket Lorus, tillverkar därför en serie klockor som sedan i somras säljs till förmån för stiftelsen. Leveranserna har redan gått till Europa, Sydafrika och Australien för att senare finnas på alla marknader där Seiko opererar.

- Jag är självklart glad och tacksam för att Seiko hjälper stiftelsen, särskilt nu när det är så många barn i Serbien som av den senaste tidens översvämningar fått sina liv förstörda och som därför är väldigt utsatta, säger Djokovic vid lunchen.

The first collections saw the light of day at SIHH, the main watch fair. The models were maybe designed primarily for those who wanted to wear something with the Ralph Lauren logo at any price. In later years, the watches have become a true collection and at WTM we monitor the development closely.

At the last SIHH, Ralph Lauren presented his new watch models, saying their design have been inspired by the harsh beauty of African nature. His obsession with safari experiences can also be detected in their looks.

- When I started working as a designer, my dream was travelling to Africa to experience real safaris. I wanted to see the most exotic places in the world, Lauren says.

På senaste SIHH presenterade Ralph Lauren sina nya klockmodeller som han sade är inspirerade av den karga skönhet det afrikanska landskapet förmedlar, samtidigt som hans faiblesse för safariupplevelser också kan ses i deras utförande.

- När jag började som designer var min dröm att kunna fara till Afrika och vara med om riktiga safariupplevelser. Jag bar på drömmen om att få uppleva naturen och se de mest avlägsna delarna av världen, säger Lauren själv.

It was June 13, 1923, that Paul Bjerke opened his watch store on Brugata in Oslo. More than 90 years later, the company owns four quality watch stores with addresses in both Oslo and Bergen, and the business is run by a descendant of founder Paul Bjerke.

T

he start of the business didn’t turn out the way Paul Bjerke had planned. After his education, apprentice years and work in foreign countries, he wanted to open a distribution company in the watch business in Vikersund, a place known for ski jumping and other winter sports. But the plans took an unexpected turn.

One morning in 1923 Bjerke’s wife, Inger, told Andresens Bank that it was time to withdraw their savings in cash. The bank clerk asked if Inger wanted the money right that very minute. No thank you, she answered and said her husband would drop by later in the day to collect the cash. A few hours later the bank went bankrupt and the couple lost all their savings. They had to abandon the Vikersund project and in-

stead opened a little store in central Oslo for pocket watches and wall clocks.

With his experiences from Germany and England, Bjerke took the chance to import a number of wristwatches since he was convinced that going with new trends and the latest technology would be the road to success.

Times were hard after World War One, but Paul Bjerke was keeping busy. He actively sought customers such as employees of big companies, offering watches on credit through agents.

In 1930, the store moved around the corner to an old leather tannery on Storgatan.

The business was by now prosperous and in 1933 Bjerke managed to open a second store in a former fruit shop on Karl Johan, Oslo’s main parade street. They have kept the address ever since, except for a few years when

the German occupying forces threw them out to open up a Nazi bookstore.

When Germany had lost the war and life in Norway started to return to normal, Urmaker Bjerke was in a strong position since turnover had been high before the war.

Moreover, Paul’s sons, twins Erling and Ragnar, had gotten solid educations in both business and watchmaking. There was never any doubt that they would work in the family business, so the store in Karl Johan was renamed Bröder Bjerke.

Early in 1948, Paul Bjerke suddenly passed away at only 56 years of age. His 31year-old twin sons had to share the responsibility for continuing the business. Erling took over the store at Karl Johan and Ragnar the one on Storgatan.

said in an interview when he retired from work.

Until the 1970’s the Norwegian watch business was dominated by men in white coats, while eventual wives were given the job of customer relations. The brothers didn’t agree with this kind of structure as watches were becoming more and more accessible and standards of living were on the rise. When they bought the almost 200 years old Tannergården they could fill the space with table and floor clocks, a new range of products. During a 20-year period

Urmaker Bjerke sold thousands of Danish, Swedish, English and Italian floor clocks to happy customers all over eastern Norway.

The Karl Johan store concentrated more and more on exclusive watch brands, and of course the most popular was Omega. One of the important factors was the decision to start retailing Rolex in the 1970’s. The family was hesitant about opening up for Rolex for quite some time, feeling the brand was setting extremely strict rules for their dealers. But curiosity and the wish to try something new took over, and Bjerke decided to

become a Rolex dealer.

A new generation stepped into the business in the 1970’s and 80’s; Erling’s three sons. The brothers stayed true to their grandfather’s strategies and established Bjerke Engros for selling watches and presents to companies. In 1988 they were offered to take over the more traditional jewelry dealer Thune and quickly turned it into a nationwide chain of stores.

Urmaker Bjerke then opened up new stores at Prinsens Gate in Oslo, in Bergen and in Ålesund while simultaneously

becoming exclusive dealers for a number of quality brands like Patek Philippe, JaegerLeCoultre, Breitling, Cartier and Bvlgari.

All of the brands made tough demands, and Bjerke remembers that “to be allowed to sell Bvlgari we almost had to rebuild the entire store”.

Today no one argues that the Bjerke name is associated with quality and watches in Haute Horlogerie from the leading Swiss brands and high levels of service, experience and professional knowledge.

- Sometimes there have been problems finding the most skilled watchmakers in

Norway because so few study the profession. That’s why in the last 25 years we have employed skilled watchmakers from all over the world, who regularly travel to the Swiss factories for new educational courses, says Halvor Bjerke.

Urmaker Bjerke, Bjerke Engros and Thune were managed as a group for a while but in 2001 the brothers split up the company. Today, master watchmaker Halvor Bjerke manages Urmaker Bjerke’s four stores of which the shop at Karl Johan is the flagship store and definitely Norway’s most exclusive watch boutique.

Med yrkesstolthet i över 90 år Det var den 13 juni 1923 som Paul Bjerke öppnade sitt urmakeri med adress Brugata i Oslo. Drygt 90 år senare består företaget av fyra butiker med adresser i både Oslo och Bergen inom området kvalitetsklockor, och företaget drivs av en ättling i rakt nedstigande led till Paul Bjerke.

Starten på företagandet blev dock inte som Paul Bjerke tänkt sig.

Efter sin utbildning, lärlingstid och arbete utomlands ville han starta ett distributionsföretag inom klockbranschen i Vikersund, en plats känd för skidsport och backhoppning. Men starten blev dramatisk.

Bjerkes fru Inger meddelade en morgon 1923 till Andresens Bank där de hade sitt konto att nu var det dags att ta ut sparpengarna. Bankmannen frågade om de skulle lämnas över genast. Nej tack, svarade fru Bjerke och meddelade att hennes make skulle komma senare under dagen för att hämta dem. Bara några timmar efter detta samtal var bankens konkurs ett faktum och paret Bjerke förlorade hela sparkapitalet. De var tvungna att överge Vikersundprojekt och öppnade i stället en liten butik i centrala Oslo för fickur och väggur.

Med sina erfarenheter från Tyskland och England vågade Bjerke sig på att köpa in ett antal armbandsur, eftersom han var övertygad om att kunskap och möjlighet att följa ny teknik och nya trender var viktigt om man skulle lyckas.

Mellankrigstiden var svår men Paul Bjerke var inte overksam. Han sökte effektivt upp kundgrupper som till exempel stora företags anställda till vilka han genom agenter erbjöd klockor på kredit.

1930 flyttade butiken runt hörnet till ett gammalt garveri på Storgatan. Verksamheten var nu lönsam och 1933 lyckades de öppna en filial i en före detta fruktbutik på Karl Johan, stadens paradgata nummer ett. Adressen har de behållit sedan dess om man räknar bort de åren då den tyska ockupationsmakten körde ut dem till förmån för sin egen nazistiska bokhandel.

När Tyskland förlorade kriget och Norge började med återuppbyggnaden stod Urmaker Bjerke välutrustad eftersom omsättningen varit hög före kriget. Dessutom hade Pauls söner, tvillingarna Erling och Ragnar, skaffat sig gedigen utbildning inom både urmakeri och affärsverksamhet.

Det var aldrig någon tvekan om att de skulle arbeta inom familjeföretaget så butiken på Karl Johan döptes om till Bröder Bjerke.

I början av 1948 dog Paul Bjerke plötsligt bara 56 år gammal och hans då 31-åriga söner fick tillsammans ta över ansvaret för driften, Erling ansvarade för rörelsen på Karl Johan och Ragnar för Storgatan.

- Vi tyckte det var roligt att mäta våra resultat mot varandra, berättade Ragnar i en intervju när

han gick i pension.

Fram till och med 1970-talet dominerades den norska klockbranschen av manliga urmakare i vita rockar och den eventuella hustrun fick ta hand om kontakten med kunderna. En struktur som bröderna inte tyckte höll när klockor blev mer och mer tillgängliga och välståndet ökade. I och med köpet av den nästan 200-åriga Tannergården fick de möjlighet att utöka lokalerna som fylldes med bords- och golvur som var en ny varugrupp för företaget. Under en 20-årsperiod sålde Urmaker Bjerke tusentals danska, svenska, engelska och italienska golvur till nöjda kunder över hela östra Norge.

Butiken på Karl Johan fokuserade mer och mer på de dyrare varumärkena för armbandsur och populärast var då självklart Omega. Ett av de avgöranden när det gäller sortimentet som fick stor betydelse var beslutet att ta in Rolex på 1970-talet. Familjen var länge tveksam till att öppna upp för Rolex eftersom de upplevde att varumärket hade satt extremt stränga regler för sina återförsäljare. Nyfikenheten och viljan till förnyelse tog över och Bjerke beslutade att bli Rolexåterförsäljare.

Under 1970- och 1980-talen kliver en ny generation in i företaget, Erlings tre söner. Bröderna följde i det spår deras farfar ville arbeta och etablerade Bjerke Engros för försäljning av klockor och presenter

till företag. 1988 fick de ett erbjudande att köpa den mer traditionella guldsmedshandeln Thune vilket de gjorde och Thune växte snabbt till en rikstäckande kedja.

Urmaker Bjerke öppnade därefter affär på Prinsens Gate i Oslo, i Bergen och i Ålesund samtidigt som de blev exklusiva återförsäljare av ett antal kvalitetsmärken som Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breitling, Cartier och Bvlgari. De ställde alla höga krav och Bjerke säger att ”för att få sälja Bvlgari var vi nästan tvungna att bygga om hela butiken”.

Idag är det ingen som inte håller med när man säger att namnet Bjerke förknippas med kvalitet och klockor inom Haute Horlogerie från Schweiz ledande varumärken, hög servicenivå, erfarenhet och professionell kunskap.

- Ibland har det varit svårt att hitta de skickligaste urmakarna eftersom man i Norge utbildar så få. Vi har därför de senaste 25 åren hos oss haft skickliga hantverkare från hela världen som regelbundet reser till de schweiziska fabrikerna för vidareutbildning, säger Halvor Bjerke.

Urmaker Bjerke, Bjerke Engros och Thune drevs under en tid som en grupp men 2001 delade bröderna upp bolaget. Idag är det urmakarmästare Halvor Bjerke som driver Urmaker Bjerke med de fyra butikerna som ingår och där butiken på Karl Johan är flaggskeppet och Norges absolut mest exklusiva urbutik.

t was Stephane Dehner and Michael Owers who brought the watches to Sweden through their newly founded company, Breitling Nordic.

The Breitling brand itself was born back in 1884 by Leon Breitling in the small Swiss village of S:t Imier.

Leon chose to move his company to the “city of watches”, La-Chaux-de-Fonds, eight years later.

Breitling produced their first wrist-worn

chronograph as early as 1915, and in 1936 the company became official supplier to the Royal Air Force. In 1954 the Navitimer model was born, a chronograph that became a favorite of pilots all over the world. Breitling also supplied the major international airlines with watches for their cockpits.

The company was bought in 1979 by Ernest Schneider, since there were no heirs when the last generation of Breitling passed away.

the business, and Theodore’s son in turn is already involved in the company, keeping the succession in safe hands.

Many watch enthusiasts remember the 1995 launch of the Breitling Emergency with a built-in micro transmitter that could send emergency signals on the airlines’ frequency. It proved itself useful when two British pilots crashed in the Antarctic, used their watches, and were rescued when a plane had picked up their signal.

A new generation of the model, called the Emergency II, was introduced last spring. The new model is a masterpiece of technology with double frequency transmitters compatible with the specifications of Cospat-Sarsat, the international emergency system for satellites that issues warnings as well as guides rescue missions. This is the first wrist-worn device for double frequencies and will surely become an important instrument for survival in emergency situations.

- The unit is compatible with the new frequencies used for search and rescue missions in North America and Europe, says Jean-Paul Girardin, junior CEO and technical manager at Breitling.

- Developing the technology took us five years. The watch contains a rechargeable battery, a transmitter for double frequencies, and a unique antenna system.

In an emergency situation, the wearer has to activate the transmitter by removing the antenna covers on both sides of the case and pull out the tiny wires. The watch then starts sending signals on two different frequencies for 24 hours.

Breitling’s headquarters is today in Grenchen with two buildings on each side of a railway, connected by a tunnel under the tracks. In La Chaux-de-Fonds, where Leon Breitling chose to locate his business in 1892 is today the impressive Breitling Chronometeri where the company’s own chronograph movements are produced completely in-house – according to experts the best movements in existence.

Breitling Chronometeri makes movements that can tick away forever if the get the proper maintenance, and that is why after sale is one of the most important parts of the business. Breitling Nordic has realized this fact, and three years ago moved to their own large building outside Stockholm to be able to deliver the service they are now certified for.

- It cost us 25 million SEK and took nine months, but now we have the biggest and best service facilities in northern Europe, says Stephane Dehner with obvious pride when WTM comes to visit. The Swiss have inspected the facilities and were satisfied that everything takes place according to Theodore Schneider’s philosophy: “We will only deliver the very best”.

- The customers can feel complete confidence in turning to us, knowing that they will get the best service imaginable, says Stephane.

and solid. Schneider and his son Theodore are both pilots. The company is involved in multiple flying activities and has their own air fleet, including the Breitling Jet Team.

The team is made up of seven planes and is the only airshow team that uses jet planes.

They tour all around the world, and have visited Sweden three times to perform acclaimed shows with classical music.

We know that the looks of the aviators’ watches were the main reason why the Scandinavian gentlemen like them so much. But now, Breitling has finally realized the ladies also have a desire for quality timepieces.

The first time I had a conversation with Mr Schneider, which was a long time ago, I was told that if a lady wanted a Breitling she had to buy a men’s model. Ladies’ watches weren’t high on the priority list. But since women have become an important customer group, the company has finally decided to make an effort in ladies’ watches. It became very obvious a few years ago when all the female staff at Breitling’s huge four-story booth at the Basel convention wore the Tranceocean 38 mm model with white leather wristbands. This fall the ladies’ range will be completed with a new model in the Colt Lady series.

Breitling’s HQ in Grenchen, Switzerland.

Från en liten by till världssenen De gjorde gemensam sak och lanserade flygarnas klockor i Skandinavien. Det blev framgångsrikt och Breitlings populära klockor har sedan dess haft en betydande roll på den skandinaviska marknaden.

Det var Stephane Dehner och Michael Owers som tog klockorna till Sverige genom sitt nystartade företag Breitling Nordic. Varumärket Breitling grundades dock redan 1884 av Leon Breitling i den lilla schweiziska byn S:t Imier. Åtta år senare valde han att flytta företaget till ”klockornas stad” La-Chauxde-Fonds.

Redan 1915 tillverkar de sin första armbandskronograf och 1936 blir de officiell leverantör till Royal Air Force. År 1954 kommer modellen Navitimer, en kronograf som blev favorit bland piloter över hela världen. Breitling förser nu även de stora internationella flygbolagen med klockor för cockpit.

Bolaget köptes 1979 av Ernest Schneider, eftersom det inte fanns några arvingar när sista generationen Breitling gick bort. Idag är det sonen Theodore Schneider som driver företaget och hans son i sin tur är redan involverad så successionen är tryggad.

De flesta klockintresserade kommer säkert ihåg lanseringen 1995 av Breitling Emergency med inbyggd mikrosändare som sänder på flygplanens nödfrekvens. Att den fungerar visar berättelsen om de två brittiska piloterna som efter att ha kraschlandat i Antarktis använde sina klockor och blev räddade efter det att ett flygplan spårat deras nödsignal.

Förra våren visades den nya generationen av modellen, kallad Emergency II. Den nya modellen är ett högteknologiskt underverk utrustad med dubbla frekvenssändare kompatibla med specifikationerna för Cospat-Sarsat, det internationella varningssystemet för satelliter som både utfärdar varningar och vägleder räddningsuppdrag. Detta är det första handledsburna hjälpmedlet för dubbla frekvenser och lär bli ett viktigt instrument inom överlevnad i nödsituationer.

- Enheten är utformad så att den är kompatibel med de nya frekvenser som används för sök- och räddningsinsatser i Nordamerika och Europa, berättar Jean-Paul Girardin, vice VD och tekniskt ansvarig på företaget.

- Det tog fem år att utveckla tekniken. Klockan innehåller ett laddningsbart batteri, sändare för dubbel frekvens och ett unikt antennsystem.

I en nödsituation måste bäraren aktivera sändaren genom att lossa antennlocket på den högra sidan av boetten, dra ut tråden och göra samma sak med den andra antennen på vänster sida av boetten.

Klockan börjar då skicka signaler på två frekvenser under 24 timmar.

- När sändaren en gång aktiverats kan klockan inte återanvändas, säger Girardin.

- Det är en ”one-shot-enhet”.

Men skulle olyckan verkligen vara framme och det handlar om en verklig nödsituation och inte ett falskt alarm så ersätter vi klockan utan kostnad, avslutar Girardin.

- Det kostade oss 25 miljoner och tog nio månader att färdigställa, men nu har vi norra Europas största och bästa serviceanläggning, säger en stolt Stephane Dehner när WTM är på besök. Schweizarna har inspekterat verksamheten vid igångsättandet och allt sker på Theodore Schneiders uppmaning: ”Vi levererar bara det bästa”.

- Hit ska konsumenterna kunna vända sig med sina klockor och veta att de kommer att få den absolut bästa service som finns, säger Stephane.

Breitlings koppling till flyget är lång och gedigen, både pappa Schneider och sonen Theodore är piloter. Företaget är involverat i mängder med flygande aktiviteter och har en stor egen flygplansflotta

där Breitling Jet Team ingår. Teamet består av sju plan och är det enda uppvisningsteamet som flyger med jetplan. De turnerar runt hela världen, och har faktiskt varit i Sverige tre gånger och här genomfört bejublade uppvisningar till klassisk musik.

Att det var just utseendet på flygarnas klockor som tog skandinaviska män med storm vet vi men nu har Breitling själva insett att även kvinnorna är stora konsumenter av kvalitetsur.

Första gången jag talade med herr Schneider, vilket var många år sedan, fick jag veta att är det så att kvinnor vill bära en Breitling får de gärna köpa en herrklocka, dammodellerna levde då ett undanskuffat liv inom företaget. Eftersom kvinnor även inom klockornas värld blivit en viktig kundgrupp satsas det sedan en tid på damsidan. Det märktes tydligt härom året då alla kvinnor som arbetade på Baselmässan i Breitlings gigantiska monter på fyra våningar bar modellen Tranceocean 38 mm med vita läderband. Under hösten kommer damsidan att utökas med ytterligare en ny modell i serien Colt Lady.

he roots date back to 1830 when the Baume brothers started producing watches.

Frères Baume was the brand name of Louis Victor Baume and Pierre-Joseph-Celestine Baume, and even though the brand has changed ownership many times since then, the production has never stopped. They are the sixth oldest Swiss watch brand which is an unknown fact to many.

Mercier in 1918 when William Baume, grandson of one of the founding brothers, chose to start cooperating with jeweler Paul Mercier. The two gentlemen left the company in 1937 when business was soaring with distribution on five continents and 300 retailers all over the world.

In 1964, the company was bought by jeweler and watchmaker Piaget, that with their technological expertise contributed with producing ultra-thin movements, which was their specialty. When Cartier made a bid for Piaget in 1988, Baume &

Mercier also became a part of the huge luxury conglomerate Vendôme, which in turn was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1998.

Under the wings of the Richemont Group, in later years Baume & Mercier has been allowed to move on and especially the ladies’ range Linea and the Hampton, Classima and Capeland ranges have become successes. Here in Scandinavia, the brand has been rather unnoticed for some years, but now Baume & Mercier are planning a grandiose comeback in the north.

I hägn av Richemontgruppen har Baume & Mercier de senaste åren tillåtits blomma ut och framförallt damlinjen Linea och serierna Hampton, Classima och Capeland är succéer. För skandinavisk räkning har varumärket fört en ganska undanskymd tillvaro under några år, men nu sker en storsatsning på Skandinavien.

Famous Omega’s museum in Bienne (Biel) is well worth a detour for anyone interested in watches, and especially those whose hearts beat a little extra for watches made by Omega.

he original museum opened back in 1984, which means it’s the oldest museum in the world of watches. Today everyone working in true Haute Horlogerie have their own museums – showing your heritage has spread like wildfire in Switzerland to the delight of all watch aficionados.

At the museum is Louis Brandt’s original workbench, the man who Omega sees as their founder from 1848. The counters are filled with historical watches, timekeeping history, professional diver’s watches and James Bond watches.

Plenty of Omega watches worn by all sorts of prominent people are on display. It goes without saying that the astronaut watch Speedmaster and its duties at NASA is the centerpiece. Omega’s and NASA’s common history gets plenty of the spotlight. New theories about how the watch was chosen for the space explorers still keep popping up. With a guided tour of the museum you will have an unforgettable experience of this subject.

great adventure A great watch adventure started in 1833 when the self-taught watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre established a workshop after having invented a cutting machine that made it easier to manufacture the movement parts.

his invention was followed by dozens of others, in parallel with hundreds of patents that all have contributed to the evolution of Swiss watchmaking. The little workshop grew quickly and in its bigger format became known under the nickname Grande Maison in Vallée de Joux. The number of employees in 1888 was around 500.

During the last 180 years, JaegerLeCoultre have created over 1 200 different calibers and the archives contain more than 400 patentes. The Grande Maison’s resume includes a number of international successes like the models Reverso, Duoplan, Memovox,

Polaris, the remarkable Gyrotourbillon one and two, and let’s not forget the advanced table clock Atmos.

Today there are over 1 000 people employed at the factory, which is still located in the original premises in the village Le Sentier.

It’s 1 000 meters above the ground and surrounded by mountain passes where the roads sometimes get buried in snow, isolating the village. The harsh climate with extreme cold and blizzards may have stimulated the inventiveness of the locals – they simply had to come up with new ideas if they wanted to survive.

The roots of Le Sentier go back all the way to the 1500’s when the Huguenot Pierre LeCoultre escaped from the persecution in France, ended up in Geneva and became a citizen in 1558. The local Calvinism wasn’t his cup of tea though and he continued to

Vallée de Joux where he was employed with chores like cleaning out woods, building houses, farming and raising cattle. He felt truly liberated when a church was built in the village in 1612, the year that marks the birth of the village Le Sentier. Later in the tiny village, the LeCoultre and Jaeger families would be joined in marriage and that’s how the brand was christened with both of the family names.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s museum is located in the original Grand Maison, which is pretty much synonymous with the village museum since the evolution of the place has always been intertwined with the watch production. A trip through the world of watches brought the WTM team to Geneva and Frankfurt.

The weather was brilliant, the reception fantastic and our means of transportation outstanding. We visited the production facilities and spoke with those responsible for the different brands.

The new watch model Inox from Victorinox is indestructible. It can handle a couple of hours in a washing machine, being run over by a fire truck, or dropped onto concrete from ten meters.

he Swiss company Victorinox may be famous mostly for their army knives, but they produce lots of other stuff.

They aren’t just some postcard from the little Alpine country but an innovative company with responsibility for the environment as well as for their employees. After being in business for 130 years, the company celebrates with an anniversary watch named the Inox. It’s designed to match the iconic army knife (a part of the collections at MoMA, Museum of Modern Art, in New York) and to measure up to the demands of the New York Fire Department. The sturdy steel case has an additional cover made of nylon and silicone.

The watch can take a sandstorm and temperatures ranging from -51° to +71°C. It has been subjected to 12 G’s of acceleration and retardation, and has proven able to withstand gasoline, solvents, oils, detergent and bug spray without any harm being done.

The name Inox is French for stainless steel and also stands for strength, durability and resistance to corrosion. To Victorinox it naturally underlines the connection between knives and watches.

During the presentation in the small Swiss village of Ibach, we were shown how a fire truck drove over the watch. The Inox survived – but we wanted to try it for ourselves.

So we called Lars Andersson in Falun and asked if Sally was home. Sally is a fire truck that used to belong to the Milwaukee Fire

Department, built in 1940. Sally and Lars are famous among Swedish car buffs and of course Lars wears an Inox watch to match the fire truck. No sooner said than done – we went over there to see him drive over his watch.

Lars wheeled Sally across his Inox several times “to really let the watch feel the power”. It never missed a beat, and upon closer inspection we could see that the case had hardly gotten a scratch.

Facts Inox: Waterproof to 200 m, the face is sealed off, the index is printed and the movement is a reliable Ronda 715 quartz. The steel case without the cover measures 43 mm across.

The case survived, the glass as well, the movement was unharmed and hardly a scratch – unbelievable.

Fire and Ice Nya klockmodellen Inox från Victorinox är okrossbar, klarar två timmar i tvättmaskin, att en brandbil kör över den och att tappas på betong från tio meters höjd.

Det schweiziska företaget Victorinox, mest känt för sina arméknivar, tillverkar mycket mer. De är inget vykort från det lilla alplandet utan ett innovativt företag med ansvar både för natur och anställda. Vid 130 år av företagande firas födelsedagen med en speciell klockmodell, Inox. Den är framtagen för att på klocksidan matcha den oefterhärmliga ikonkniven (som ingår i samlingarna på MoMA,

Museum of Modern Art, i New York) och för att tåla de krav samarbetspartnern New York Fire Department har på en klocka.

Den robusta boetten på klockan tillverkad i stål har dessutom ett skydd tillverkat i en kombination av nylon och silikon.

Klockan klarar en sandstorm och temperaturskillnader från -51° till +71°C. Klockan har utsatts för 12 G-krafter under acceleration och retardation. Den har under tester också fått prova på att tåla bensin, lösningsmedel, oljor, rengöringsmedel och insektsmedel utan att ta skada.

Namnet Inox betyder rostfritt

stål på franska och är synonymt med hållfasthet, hållbarhet och motståndskraft mot korrosion. För Victorinox markerar det självklart kopplingen mellan knivar och klockor.

Under presentationen i den lilla byn Ibach i Schweiz fick vi se hur en brandbil körde över uret.

Det gick utmärkt – men vi på WTM ville testa själva. Vi ringde därför Lars Andersson i Falun och frågade om Sally var hemma. Sally är en brandbil som har tillhört Milwaukee Fire Department och som tillverkades 1940. Sally och Lars är världsberömda i Sveriges bilkretsar och Lars bär

naturligtvis en Inox för att matcha brandbilslooken. Sagt och gjort – vi for dit för att se när han körde över sin klocka.

Lars styrde Sally över sin Inox ett par gånger för att vara säker att det ”skulle ta”. Klockan fortsatte att gå och faktiskt hade knappt en repa uppstått på boetten vilket vi kunde se när vi granskade den efteråt.

Record braking At the latest Kaplans Watch Quality auction, a Rolex Cosmograph Oyster Daytona, so-called “Paul Newman” was for sale, and collectors all over the world followed the bidding.

That’s the description in the auction catalog, you can also see it on page XX. What the catalog doesn’t mention is that Singer, a supplier for Rolex that made the face of this particular watch, had written Cosmograph above Oyster, which is very rare. Among collectors a “flawed” watch like this is known as the RCO (Rolex Cosmograph Oyster). It was delivered only for a short time and a small series, making this anomaly extremely rare. New Swedish record – 1969 wristwatch sold for over 5 million SEK

could compare it to the famous Swedish shilling banco stamp, the most expensive in the world since someone accidentally printed it in yellow instead of green.

WTM met Tony Frank, responsible for watches at Kaplans, to discuss the auction: Who were the bidders of this watch?

- Collectors and dealers with great financial muscle and great knowledge. The international interest was huge. When the bidding had reached three million SEK, there were two bidders left in the room and seven by telephone. They came from all over the world.

What was the atmosphere like in the room?

- It was a fantastic, almost electric atmosphere as everyone followed the bidding with

total concentration. When the hammer fell, applause broke out. We usually don’t get that kind of un-Swedish response.

Was most of the bidding live, or by telephone or Internet?

- Before the auction we had received some bids by e-mail and during the auction there were several bidders in the room, but at the end there were only two telephone bidders left competing for the watch.

What do you think about the possibility of more watches from the same shipment in Sweden?

- There are extremely few watches with this particular face, but there have been rumors about another one in Sweden, and we are hoping for the opportunity to put it up for sale at a future auction.

Klockan kan jämföras med ett shilling banco-frimärke med ett eftertraktat ”skönhetsfel” när man talar samlarvärde.

WTM träffade Tony Frank, ansvarig för klockavdelningen på Kaplans, för att tala om försäljningen: Vilka var det som bjöd på klockan?

- Samlare och handlare med

riktigt bra ekonomiska muskler och stor kunskap. Det var ett väldigt stort internationellt intresse för klockan. Vid auktionens start låg budet på 3 000 000 kronor men då var det två budgivare kvar i salen och sju på telefon. De var placerade väldigt spritt över världen.

Hur var stämningen i salen?

- Det var en fantastisk stämning, nästan elektrisk och alla följde med stor uppmärksamhet budgivningen. När klubban föll utbröt en applåd vilket vi inte är vana vid – det är ju lite osvenskt.

Var det bud på plats eller per tele-

fon eller nät?

- Före auktionen hade vi fått in bud på nätet och under auktionen fanns budgivare både i salen och på telefon, till slut var det två budgivare på telefon kvar som tävlande om att få köpa klockan.

Vad tror du om möjligheten till flera klockor i Sverige av samma sändning?

- Det finns väldigt få klockor med denna speciella urtavla, men det skulle kunna finnas ytterligare en sådan i lilla Sverige och då har vi en förhoppning om att vi får detta försäljningsuppdrag.
