ROBBO WINS IT IN STYAL Billinge came from behind to beat Styal 2-1 in an entertaining Cheshire League game on Saturday. On another glorious afternoon at Barrows Farm it was Styal who impressed in the early stages. Their neat passing football opened up the Billinge defence after seven minutes but Rubin Kennerley blasted his shot over when through on goal. Billinge, however, responded immediately as first Dave Quigley went close with a shot before leading scorer Graeme Green wasted a good chance after being put through by Dan Curran. While Styal still looked the more incisive team The Storks began to dominate possession. After good work by James Webb he let himself down when he shot wide. Curran went close on 41 minutes when he turned well inside the box before hitting his shot wide. Billinge still had to be on their guard as Kennerley again squandered another chance for the visitors. Unfortunately The Storks let their guard down on the stroke of half-time when slack marking at a corner allowed Graeme Brotherton to nod home from two yards. The second period needed a reaction from Billinge and they responded well; quickly asserting their dominance and looking the fitter team. After 53 minutes great work by Webb resulted in Green going close. On the hour mark Derek Evans had two good chances to draw Billinge level but both efforts went wide. After this manager Paul Oakes shuffled his pack bringing on substitutes Andy Goulding and Scott Robinson which allowed Elliot Bradshaw and Gareth Fletcher to move up from defence into midfield. Fletcher's extra height and drive gave The Storks the impetus to search for the equaliser. On 62 minutes Chad Whyte played Green through but the striker snatched at his shot and it went wide of the post. It was now all Billinge but they couldn't find a way through. As the game entered the last ten minutes a rare sortie upfront by Styal saw Kennerley's long-range shot come back off the post. Billinge composed themselves and pressed forward with immediate success. Goulding's precise long ball was bravely back-headed by Whyte over the advancing keeper and into the goal to draw Billinge level. It was now all Billinge and they looked to have won the game when Bradshaw rose well to head towards the goal only to see his effort come back off the bar and then superbly cleared off the line by a defender. With Styal out on their feet Billinge won a corner on 87 minutes and from this centre-half Chris Godwin saw his header tipped over the bar. From the resultant corner by Bradshaw debutant Robinson lost his marker and headed down and past the keeper to make it 2-1 to the clarets and blues sending players, management and supporters into raptures. There was still time for Green to increase the lead but the Styal keeper saved well and it remained 2-1 at the final whistle. This was Billinge's third win in four games and manager Paul Oakes was pleased with all his charges saying: "It was a good team performance and the whole squad played their part. "There is still a lot to work to do but we are progressing each week and we're all enjoying our football at the moment." The opposition's man-of-the-match award went to hard-working midfielder Dave Quigley while the Billinge supporters singled out Chad Whyte for his all-round performance upfront.

NIGHT OUT IN LIVERPOOL Geoff Parr is organising a night out in Liverpool for the football club. The mind boggles!!! But if he can organise it as well as he organises the reserve team’s defence then it should be a good un! The date is 16 November 2013 and it all starts at 6.30pm at Liverpool Shooters Bar. £5 gets you a room (no not that kind) but one with a pool table, bar and all that. See Geoff for details…

THE RAKERS’ PROGRESS So after finishing in third place in The Rakers second Football League season, 1923/24, the club settled into mid-table mediocrity for the rest of the twenties and thirties, with a low point in league positions of 22nd in 1935/6, interspersed with the odd cup run engaging the Sandheys Park faithful, particularly a fine odd goal in three victory over former cup adversaries Sheffield Wednesday in a January 1936 third round tie staged at New Brighton. Another fine victory was recorded in October 1926, when Stoke City were hammered five nil, and a fine draw being recorded at the Victoria Ground in the return fixture. Even a more surprising result when looked at in the perspective of Stoke being the 3rd Division North Champions that season. Another FA Cup run took the club to White Hart Lane, in January 1938, after Spurs were somewhat fortunate to have achieved a second chance against the Rakers after a nil apiece draw in Wallasey, in front of 13,029 spectators. It was to be no fairy tale for Bill Sawyer, the secretarymanager, and his players as the North Londoners passed through to the fifth round. The club’s great run that season saw them record cup turnover figures of £5,292.00, but that was the last real cup run until the 1950's. So just some 18 months later Britain was at war with The Axis powers, and the 1939/40 Football League season ended after just three games, with The Rakers losing one, and being victorious in the other two. A regional league was formed while the "phoney war", continued, with all the clubs scratching about to field sides from wherever they could. The club were defeated 6-0 by a Manchester United side, and then remarkably were victorious at home and by the same score less than a fortnight later. The club managed to maintain a presence in the war time competition until the conclusion of the 41/42 season, but then had to withdraw from competitive football until 1946. Partially due to unavailability of suitable players but also to the Rake Lane enclosure being used for war time purposes. Many clubs played in a convoluted competition in 1945/6, with The FA Cup being staged for the first time since Portsmouth had been victorious in 1939 triumphing 4-0 over hot favourites Wolves. However The Rakers were unable to take part in the first post-war competition due to the Rake Lane ground having been badly damaged over the wartime period. So what to do? It was decided for the club to play at The Tower Grounds, with the unlikely scenario of league football returning to the "Tower" once again. So how would the Rakers fare? MORE NEXT TIME

A “HARD FOUGHT” football match! Match Result Standish Potters 5–5 Billinge Fc Both Standish Potters and Billinge Fc were out competing for the full three points. Standish Potters Fc took the early lead with three quick consecutive goals by player No.11 Greg Berry. Billinge FC players countered challenged with two equally quick goals by Danny Bishop and midfielder Liam Unwin. Halftime scoreline Standish Potters FC 3–2 Billinge FC. A very stimulative halftime team talk by “Team Captain” Jack Wood primed the BFC players a most compelling second half performance. Striker Sam Fitzsimons rattled the back of the Standish Potters net with a brace of goals putting BFC ahead. BFC midfielder Craig Hurst then smashed the ball in the back of Standish Potters net for our fifth goal in this exciting match. Standish Potters FC No.11 Greg Berry hit back with his fourth goal of the match ~ a talented footballer. The final goal of the match was in the last minute of the match ~ a Standish Potters Fc goal by player No.8 Jamie Worthington. Billinge FC Man of Match No.7 Jack Wood an excellent Team Captain Role as awarded by Standish Potters FC. Special thanks to SLCL match referee Paul Green. RESSIES LOSE ON THE ROAD… It was long journey time for the reserves last week and Billinge only arrived at Whaley Bridge five minutes before kick-off. However the lads were unfazed by the lack of preparation, no moaning and great attitudes shown by all staff and players against a top side. Young Morgan in goal showed no signs of nerves on his debut pulled off what was described by home and away supporters alike as world class. Jordan Farrell, the returning Adam Clare brilliantly aided by captain Joe Unsworth meant we soon started to take control of the game. Then in the 17th minute Ant Farrell had to come off with a suspected knee ligament injury with replacement Rob Bland going straight in at full-back and proving a very capable deputy. Geoff Parr who has made the Billinge centre-half’s shirt his own since coming out of rehab in Happy Valley - after a number of afflictions that have marred his football career – was his normal excellent self. But as good as Parr was Ant Higgins at left back was immense running their right side ragged at every opportunity ably assisted by Tom Ashall who was showing some brilliant ball control and long-range passing ability finding the marauding Rob Ablewhite and Dan Hauge who is going to be a massive player for Billinge FC. However on the half-hour mark disaster struck when against the run of play the Bridge centre forward rose high to head home and put them ahead. Billinge didn’t lie down. Higgins went on a 70-yard run down the left to be upended in the box but to everyone’s disbelieve the referee gave a direct frre kick outside the box. “Cheat” could be heard ringing out around the ground as the ref bottled it and went in favour of the home side. Ablewhite and Ashall lined up the free kick and Rob hit a cracker hit a cracker but it went just wide meaning we went in one-down at half-time The second period started with a change of personnel by Billinge as Clare - who had run himself into the ground - was given a rest to be replaced by the loose cannon Terry ‘The Entertainer’ Jepson who again showed his commitment to the cause by travelling 70 miles to turn out for his beloved club Billinge if you want commitment as well as talent this kid has it in abundance. He was straight into the game picking up a great through ball from Jordan Farrell to scuff his shot. With The Storks pressing hard disaster struck a long ball caught them out and it was 2-0 against the run of play. Squash played his last card in an attacking sense taking off the tiring Hague to re-introduce pocket dynamo Clare; who again ran his socks of as well as combining with the attack. Sadly Billing couldn’t claw back the two-goal deficit and conceded another late-on meaning the game finished 3-0 to the home side. Speaking at the post-match news conference manager Squash said: “Not very often you come off the pitch delighted with your players after a 3-0 defeat but we only take positives out of today’s performance. “The lads are so together it is unreal. They help our walking wounded and fight for the Billinge cause for 90-plus minutes each game. “There were outstanding performances from Parr and Jordan Farrell but everyone played well. However if I’m pushed for a man-of-the-match I’d go for Ant Higgins who was like perpetual motion all afternoon going up and down that line. He was sheer class but most of all a winner.”

WE'VE all heard countless times about managers who “lose the dressing room” but what about bosses who lose the supporters? Just last week, Cambridge United manager Richard Money lashed out at his own fans for not getting behind their team, saying they were “as quiet as a mouse” and adding “It's not acceptable – not good enough.” Were the U's being outplayed on their own turf? Not quite. United beat Hereford 1-0 to go seven points clear at the top of the Conference Premier. It's common for fans and managers to butt heads when the team are struggling for form. But this is a side that started the season with a 13 game unbeaten run – a club record. To be fair to Money, he has since come out and said it was “ a ridiculous, over-exaggerated rant from a grumpy old fool.” That may well be, but the damage might already be done. Football fans don't forget things in a hurry and this might have just soured the relationship with Money despite their fantastic start. There have been somewhat similar instances elsewhere in Non-League too. Former Grimsby Town joint-boss Rob Scott was never afraid to show his feelings – and that included to his own fans. After a defeat to Darlington back in 2011, Scott went towards a section of the home crowd and had a verbal “discussion” with a certain supporter. Scott departed the Mariners last month to leave Paul Hurst in sole charge. Only recently did Ian Bogie quit Stockport County after admitting that “the venom that was spouted at myself and the players, which I’ve heard in a number of games, is not on.” You could perhaps forgive County fans for being a bit more raucous than most with the rapid demise they have suffered. On the same note, you can't blame bosses like Bogie. These managers have full-time jobs and then have the added pressure of handling a part-time football team so abuse is the last thing they want or need. And they'll all tell you that there's no such thing as part-time in Non-League football. There have also been more high profile falling outs. Roy Keane famously told Sunderland fans to stay away from him and then left the Black Cats just three months later. Gary Megson is another who has failed to win over supporters wherever he has gone, partly down to his style of play. He once labelled Bolton fans “pathetic” and later said “I liked Bolton as a club, but the fans didn't like me. I don't particularly like them either.” The relationship a boss has with his players is obviously massive. But so is his rapport with the fans. It's clear to see that discouraging supporters lead to questions being asked by the board. And in this day and age of panic throughout football, it's the last thing managers need. But maybe fans and managers should just forget their difference and stick together. That may be easier said than done but after all, both parties have the club's best interests at heart.

Euromillions winners Colin and Chris Weir have given ÂŁ750,000 to Scottish Premiership club Partick Thistle to build a new youth academy. The Weirs, from Largs in Ayrshire, won ÂŁ161m two years ago- The Thistle Weir Youth Academy will be run by the club's former striker and manager, Gerry Britton, who was already head of youth development. Colin Weir said; "What impressed us was that it wouldn't just be for elite players but would also encourage local youngsters into football for the sheer enjoyment and fun of it." "Having seen the club's determination to get this project off the ground, we decided that, as we were in a position to offer financial assistance, we wanted to help them achieve their dream." Academy director Britton, club chairman David Beattie, director Greig Brown and general manager Ian Maxwell have all been named as trustees for the acdemy, though Thistle insist that the academy "will be run at arms' length from Partick Thistle Football Club". The academy will be based out of the club's Firhill Stadium in Glasgow's Maryhill with the aim to "create a professional pathway to football for 120 elite players, while offering the chance to play football to up to 1000 boys and girls for enjoyment and fitness". Thistle's existing set-up has "performance academy" status and comprises six teams of 20 boys each training three nights per week. Initially, 400-500 boys and girls, from the age of five, will join the academy to play football for fitness and fun, with the best moving into the elite teams. Britton, who has been combining his role with his career as a solicitor, said: "This is a chance for the Thistle Weir Youth Academy to give hundreds of kids the opportunity to get involved in football, for fun or by creating a path to professional football for others. "There is huge potential pool of talent out there and it's going to be our job at the Thistle Weir Youth Academy to find youngsters and give them everything they need to become the professional footballers of the future." footballtradedirectory.com

FROM THE BOARDROOM: STEVE DICKSON – CHAIRMAN OF BILLINGE FC I would like to welcome Page Celtic to Barrow Farm in the second round of the Liverpool Cup. Page Celtic are one of the famous Liverpool amateur teams and it’s our privilege to entertain them today. Over the last few years we have had friendlies lined up against Page but for some reason the football Gods were always against us and the games have been cancelled. It feels like I know Page well even though I have never actually met with anyone from their club. It will be nice to finally meet people I have emailed, called and text almost every summer. Of course, I would like to welcome our growing band of loyal fans and let them know how much their support means to the lads and to the club. This is one of those Saturdays when there are no Premier League or Championship games so if you are normally regulars at Everton, Liverpool, United or Latics then I hope you enjoy our hospitality and are hopefully rewarded by the quality on display at this level. Also many thanks to any of our reserve or Sunday team lads that are down at the Farm today. We have always said we are a football club and not a set of football teams and your presence is much appreciated. Let’s get behind the lads and see a performance that will see us get to the third round. Off the pitch we are all working extremely hard to progress the club. There is a lot going on and over the coming months you should see the beginnings of these plans come to fruition. They are indeed exciting times for the club but we will not get to where we want to be without a lot of hard work. The progress we have made so far this season is there for everybody to see but these are just the beginning. Last but not least a big thanks to the sponsors for their continued support…

THE CONCISE HISTORY OF BILLINGE FOOTBALL CLUB Billinge Football Club was founded in 1988 By Phil Middlehurst. They played then in the St Helens Combination at the Eddleston Playing Fields, Billinge. 1988-1989 to 1991-1992 Geoff Maggs was the first manager to take the reins of the newly-formed club. 1992-1993 to 1996-1997 Following Geoff Maggs' departure to pastures new, Les Pilling was installed as the club manager. 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 Billinge FC form a Reserve Team, Brian Collins is appointed First Team Manager and Les Pilling takes on the Manager's Job of the newly-created Reserve Team. 1999-2000 to 2004-2005 Manager Keith Amato, replaces Brian Collins as First Team Manager. Les Pilling continues his sterling work with the Reserve Team. Amato enjoyed success with Billinge FC bringing silverware to the club and being the first manager to take a Billinge team into the prestigious Mid-Cheshire League. 2005-2006 Paul Farrell is appointed as First Team Manager to replace Keith Amato, long time club stalwart Les Pilling is appointed as Farrell’s Assistant Manager and Colin Betts is appointed as Reserve Team Manager. 2007-2008 Ex-Wigan Athletic legend Bryan Griffiths is appointed as First Team Manager, assisted by Andrew Clough. Dave Knowles is appointed as the Reserve Team Manager. Knowles is the first Billinge manager to take a team to a Mid-Cheshire Cup Final, losing narrowly to Poynton on a penalty shootout. Following the highs of the Cup Final, various on-going issues meant that Knowles was to leave the club at the end of the season. 2008-2009 Griffiths and Clough get Billinge promoted to the top division in the Cheshire League. The club move grounds from Eddleston Fields to purpose-built facilities at Barrow Farm. Steve Dickson is appointed as Reserve Team Manager. 2009-2010 Griffiths and Clough consolidate the First Team in the Cheshire League top division and Dickson looks to re-build the Reserves with strong links into the Billinge Youth system. 2010-2011 Ex St Helens Town Manager Jimmy McBride comes out of retirement to take over the job of First Team Manager, Bryan Griffiths steps down to become assistant to McBride and Andrew Clough takes on the position of club Chairman.

High points include Neil McDermot, Gary Jones, Scott Tickle and Andy Ledger being named in the Cheshire League Inter-League Squad. Steve Dickson continues as Reserve Team Manager. At the end of the season McBride resigns after being offered his old job back at St Helens Town, McBride comes back for Andrew Clough as his Assistant Manager at Town. 2011-2012 Steve Dickson is promoted from the Reserves to the First Team, he appoints a Management Team including Adam Lowry as Head Coach, Rob Dainty as Assistant Manager and Les Pilling as Match Day Secretary. Dickson is given the task of rebuilding the team to have a more youthful look. A new Reserve Team Management Team is appointed with Brian Mather, Chez Tideswell and Campbell Wilson coming in with a host of new players. The First Team had a really good run of results which lead to a mid-table finish considering the disastrous start this was a great achievement, they were the first Billinge Senior Team to get to the Cheshire League's prestigious League Cup Final and the average age has been reduced to 22 years. The Reserves have equalled Dave Knowles feat of getting the Reserves to the Reserve Cup Final, they also went on to a league and cup double, beating Farnworth 3-0 in the Northern Cup Final then to be crowned as Cheshire League Reserve Division Champions. Following the Reserve Team's success at Billinge the management accepted an approach from Daten F.C and left to form Daten's first team. Billinge moved quickly to appoint Paul Oakes as the Reserve team manager, Oakes had enjoyed success with St Helens Combination Premier outfit Greenfields FC. Dave Knowles returned to the club as Assistant Manager to Oakes, with Rob Dainty taking on an advisory/youth development role, this position is temporary as Dainty will return to First Team duties. 2012-2013 Steve Dickson steered the First Team to safety in the top division while the Reserve Team, under Paul Oakes, finished a very respectable 7th. The Reserve Team became the first club to retain the Northern Cup when they beat Quarry Bank 3-1 in the final. 2013-2014 Paul Oakes and Steve Dickson take up the reins of the First Team management whilst Paul Farrell and Keith Amato are appointed Reserve Team managers. New members are added to the committee with Steve Dickson installed as chairman while the club runs a Sunday Team managed by committee member Dave Wood and playing in the South Lancs League at Barrows Farm as the club celebrates it’s silver anniversary.

OUR THOUGHTS, PRAYERS AND SUPPORT GO OUT TO RYAN Everybody at Billinge FC was knocked back when they heard the news that Sunday team player Ryan Farrington had been diagnosed with cancer. Over the coming weeks we'll be throwing our weight behind Macmillan Cancer Support Meanwhile here is a recent article from the Warrington Guardian That's what friends are for - support for former Mr Warrington Guardian THESE men have all shaved their heads to raise money for charity in tribute to a friend who has been diagnosed with cancer. Ryan Farrington, aged 26, of Houston Gardens, Chapelford, started a 10 week course of chemotherapy on Wednesday. He is determined to keep battling against the disease despite further tests on Friday revealing the testicular cancer has spread to his stomach. The former Mr Warrington said: “I was gutted when I found out the cancer had spread. “I’ve still got a chance for a really good outcome. “The doctors are hoping the chemotherapy will kill all the tumours. “If not, I’ll need another operation on my stomach. “It wasn’t the news I was hoping for but I’m determined to keep positive.” Part of that approach saw Ryan organised the fundraiser for Macmillan Research at Warrington Hospital on Saturday. He was joined by 16 friends in the head shave that has helped raise more than £2,500. And the electrician has also received a card of support from former Everton and Celtic player Alan Stubbs, who recovered from cancer in 2001. Ryan added: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the reaction and I just like to say to everyone how much I appreciate their support.”

A WORD FROM THE GAFFER “We will be measured by what we achieve on the pitch this season”

GOOD afternoon and welcome to Barrows Farm for our Liverpool County FA game against Page Celtic. We welcome a Page Celtic team who we know are a very good outfit that compete in one of the best leagues at that level in the whole country. This will be another tough fixture where we will need to ensure our attitude is spot-on and we then need our football to match it. If we do that then we will have a chance of getting through to the next round. Everybody involved with Billinge FC are winners and when we enter cup competitions we want to win them so here’s hoping… Last week I felt we got the result we deserved and there were a few reasons for that. Our overall second-half performance was superb and was epitomised by Chad Whyte’s brave performance. Chad must have taken four blows to the head but carried on and got a great goal to draw us level. At the other end Tom Hull was terrific in goal while I was pleased to add Scott Robinson to the squad. Robbo brings some more quality to the team at the back and on Saturday had an impact upfront as he weighed in with the winning goal. Meanwhile I have been greatly impressed with Andy Goulding’s excellent attitude as he’s had to play in a number of positions these last few weeks. May I thank our supporters and sponsors for their continued backing of the club while finally I have to say – on behalf of the management and players – a big thank you to Ann-Marie, Jayne and Hannah who are doing a magnificent job in the Boot Room Café. PAUL OAKES: MANAGER OF BILLINGE FC
