PLACES TO
GO
Ti Point Reserve Walk Just before Leigh and right past the Reptile Park is Ti Point Reserve. Ti Point itself is a stunning little fishing spot where you look right out across to the end of Omaha. Following the walking track, it will lead you on a beautiful coastal walk. The trail escorts you under enchanting pohutukawa, along underrated swimming spots and around the crystalline coast. There are many park benches and tiny bays you can stop off at along the walk, even just 15 minutes from the start. However, I encourage you to keep going as at the end of the hour long walk you are rewarded with an incredible view of the surrounding sea, out to Little Barrier, Omaha Beach and Tawharanui.

Pink beach A 20 minute walk from Omaha Beach is Pink Beach. At the very south end of Omaha, behind the tennis courts it will bring you to a fence. There you climb over and follow the beaten-track up the hill and then along the cliffside. You will already be able to see the humble beach, a stunning view of the open ocean and across Omaha. You carefully make your way down the steep hillside to the rocks and red-flecked sand. The private beach is almost always empty, besides the odd one or two people. Visiting Pink Beach makes for a great day-trip without too much effort and allows you to see new views and perspectives of our marvelous coastline.

If you are willing to drive over the windy gravel road from Leigh and over Pakiri Hill you can visit the stunning surf beach. The glistening white sand expands for what seems like forever on either side and is encased by intimidating hills and rolling sand dunes. The rough waves may put you off but are super fun to play in if you’re careful, otherwise the estuary makes for a relaxing dip. Let loose and jump off the sand dunes, check out the campground’s mini waterslide, have a walk along the extensive shore and pop in to the dairy for an icecream after a long day in the sun.

Otago Rail Trail The fact is, in this world, no one’s butt likes to sit on a bike for four days straight. So waking up for the fifth and final day of the Otago rail trail was not exactly heaven like. Don’t get me wrong; I was having the time of my life with my brothers and cousins but my clicking, clanking, aching bones were not in total agreement. My name is Evelyn. I’m average height, blonde hair, brown eyes and I obtain an unusual amount of freckles. I have two younger brothers, Remi and Luke, who are nine and seven years old. I’m twelve. We were on our way early and about one kilometre into the track when we really noticed the wind picking up. Two kilometres after that was when we began to wonder where all the other tourists on the track were. One kilometre after that was when my parents, Uncle and Aunty became visibly worried. I am scared. No point hiding it; we all are. No cell phone reception, dangerously high winds and no other company to be seen other than ourselves. We come up to a lethally high ridge and see an orange sign that has been freshly planted in the ground. This is when I realise just how bad of a situation we are in. “Do not ride across,” it says. “Two adults per bike. Kids crawl.” I watch as my Aunty puts on a falsely bright smile and then see my parents follow promptly. “This will be fun kids!” My aunt yells over the gusting wind. I could not agree less.

As I was army crawling along the hard orange clay dirt, I was faintly aware of my fourteen year old cousin bearing his bike at the other end of the ridge. It was like a movie. In slow motion. I watched as my cousin’s firm grip on the bike disappeared. Without any explanation to myself, I felt a provoking emotion to be somewhat a hero. So I scrambled to my feet with full intentions to catch the flying object. Instead I went flying as well. As I landed half way down the ridge on the rock hard clay, the amount of pain I was in was fierce. But as the metal down tube on the bike ricocheted off the ground into my face, I swear I was going to die. I had hot, bubbling, red blood streaming out of my nose and trickling out of my freshly split eyebrow. I heard faint yells that the wind delivered get let out from above me. My cousin slid down the clay towards the almost flattened tree I laid against. He groaned loudly as he saw my blood covered face. “Sorry,” he grumbled, “Didn’t mean to let go.” He pulled me to my feet and half pushed, half dragged me up the hill. If you have never had a broken nose, consider yourself lucky. The immense pain I was in as I finally reached the top and felt the full gust of wind against my shaking bones was horrific. I crawled over to my family. “Told you it would be fun.” My aunt said feebly. I could not agree less.

GO OD BY E
By Rylie Travers
She stood there. Her features barely visible under her pitch black wreath of hair. Shimmering blue eyes two deep pools of water, were the only other part of her that you could make out against the exquisite night sky. Her hand reached down to brush against the soft carpet of pine needles. Glancing out over the cliff, she peered down to see the treacherous waves below duck under, into the calm, tranquil ocean. Taking one last deep breath she took a step forward, and fell. Carving through the crisp night air. No panic, but peacefulness. Time seemed to freeze. Wistfully she took one last glimpse at the place all her life, she had called home. Glancing up she saw the traitorous cliffs, she just leapt from. Rocks scattered around in clumps their shadows casting a ghostly scene in the moonlight. The cavalry of towering pine trees strewed along the ridge line, marching forward, but never getting anywhere. Looking down, she saw what awaited her. The wild sea was crashing up against the weather beaten rocks. She wondered what creatures were down there, but quickly pushed the thought aside as it depleted her newfound bravery. Two hawks broke out of the forest gliding gracefully across the moon. Their gentle wing beats creating a melody adding to the orchestra of breaking waves and cicadas chattering. Sparks of light filled the sky as the stars twinkled, waving her goodbye. The moon shone with all its glory, speaking up against the silhouette of pine trees. Without a warning she plunged into the dark ice cold sea. Her skin ached from the severity of the impact. Water suddenly rushed up her nose and through her firmly closed lips. Flailing she tried to propel herself to the surface, but then just let the current take her now lifeless body away.
