MAGAZINE

Hi there! Finally, we wrap up the year with a summer issue of Vault. Our fourth and final mag for 2017 is packed with shots to inspire your days in the sun, where to hang out around your local area, as well as a wind up of the art, photography, music and media we have all created this year. We hope this gives you readers a visual diary to plan out those long sunshine filled days, and lets you relax in wake of the school year being over! For me, my year was taken over by this 24 page publication you currently hold in your hands. It has been the biggest learning opportunity I have had, and the most fun, stressful, and rewarding thing I have done. However it’s about time I let someone else enjoy this job, and therefore this will be the last editor’s letter I write, as I am handing the role of Editor in Chief over to Sinead Spurr. She has been an amazing help these past two issues and you can rest assured that she will continue to create wonders for this little project and build it into something for all young creatives around the area - not just those attending Mahurangi! I’m so excited to see what Vault evolves into, and we hope you enjoy it’s new team behind it. For now, take issue 4 to the beach, read it with a glass of OJ, and listen to the summer playlists we have put together for you. Welcome to summer everyone! - Claudia

Following them we saw the talented Riley Popham for the second time this year, looping out some rocky tunes, with a Bowie tribute in amongst the mix.

For the final act, Mahu’s very own Jazz Combo made an appearance, playing in their reliably polished way, with jazz classics as well as funked up a pop hits like Redbone.

The Top Twelve

Samuel Chitty & Ysabella Stevenson, along with their crews, have proven that Mahu has got the stuff to go worldwide, as the news that their two films both made it into the International Silent Film Festival’s top 12. WHAT EXPERIENCES HAVE YOU GAINED FROM THIS VENTURE? Samuel: Ultimately, the biggest lesson I learned is that you should stick with your vision for a project. There were times when I had to face removing one my favourite moments of the film, for fear that it didn’t fit with the story. But we endured, and I think the finished product speaks to what a good decision that was. Ysabella: Making this film allowed me to gain more experience in directing - I had to give clear, concise instructions to the actors, and to our cinematographer, I had to make sure we got every shot we needed, and that it looked how it needed to look, and I had to ensure that we got everything done within the time frame. WILL YOU CONTINUE TO CREATE MORE SHORT FILM CONTENT? Sam: Yes! It’s a passion of mine, and I will absolutely keep creating. I’ve got two projects in the pipeline for over the summer, so watch this space. Ysabella: Absolutely! Filmmaking is something I’m very passionate about, and making short films is a way to explore all the little ideas for films I’ve had. It’s a way to take an idea and make it a reality. IS THIS A POTENTIAL CAREER PATH FOR YOU? Sam: Honestly, I’m warming up to the idea. It’s certainly not the easiest path to go down, but I can see it would be so rewarding once you get there. Ysabella: Definitely, becoming a great director, producing my own feature length films and seeing them on the big screen, or creating my own TV series, is something I want nothing more than to do as a career. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR FILMMAKING CAREER IF SO? Sam: One day, I hope to break into the indie film circuit. I’m not sure whether I’d like to do so as a writer or a director at this point, because I love both parts of production so much. Ysabella: At this point, my goal is simply to become a great director. To be sitting in the director’s chair at a set in Hollywood, calling the shots, seeing my vision for a film become a reality - there’s nothing I want more.

WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL SILENT FILM FESTIVAL? It is a competition that young filmmakers from all over the world can enter. Each ‘region’ has its own final, and the winners from each, go overseas for the Global Awards Show, where the overall winner is announced. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR SILENT FILM? Samuel: Our film draws heavy inspiration from La La Land. I absolutely love how that film uses colours, freedom in the camerawork, and the warm feeling it gives you. So I wanted to channel that, and see what we could do to try and emulate it in our own way. Ysabella: When I was brainstorming ideas, there was one goal - to create something that the audience could relate to. And what better than procrastinating homework? It’s something almost every student is familiar with, along with the horrible realisation that you only have one night to finish everything.

MATTHEW TORCKLER

What will you be doing next year? I am going to Auckland University to study engineering. Why aren’t you going into music as a career? I just kind of see it as a hobby, and it’s not guaranteed economic welfare, I’d rather not be poor! I also just enjoy making stuff, and it is more of a passion for me more so than music. Why have you chosen to keep music up, even through the pursual of a different career path? Because I find it really enjoyable, it’s a lot of fun and you get to meet new people. It’s also a good diversifying factor for me as a person because I’m so academic with calculus and physics - having that arty side is a nice balance, and allows me to relax from the other side a bit. The most rewarding thing about playing in this band? Probably just performing - having fun and banter and just generally having a good time.

What will you be doing next year? Next year I’m going to study at Auckland University to focus on Jazz performance and specialising on alto sax. Why have you chosen to take the risk of going into a creative field? I don’t see it as a risk for myself because my creative field, is fortunately also what I enjoy most and am best at, so I know I can make it work better than any other possible career.

SARA

JONES

What do you hope to achieve in your music career? I plan on making myself as skilled as possible at my chosen instruments and working with other musicians to perform and record. One day I hope to have overseas experience in performing and recording music. What has been the most rewarding part of being apart of the jazz combo? Working with the combo this year has been one of my favourite aspects of school, it’s not often that our school is fortunate enough to have so many talented and motivated musicians. I think the most rewarding thing about being with the combo is how much we’ve achieved from our own inspiration and efforts. We’ve done heaps of gigs this year, from the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival to the North West Jazzfest and of course the Sawmill and Kowhai Festival. I think everyone in the band has developed together and performed incredibly all year and it has just been so much fun.

Holidays mean we’ve all got a bit more time on our hands... Why not put those mits to good use with these baked goodies? Perfect for impressing family over christmas, or packing for a picnic with friends!

Method: On stove-top bring chopped pumpkin to boil on a high heat, before bringing to simmer for 10 mins or until well cooked. Strain water & transfer pumpkin to large bowl. Mash until no large chunks remain. Rinse quinoa before transferring to pot with 1 cup water. On a high heat, bring the grain to a boil before turning it to a simmer for approx 10 mins, or until fully cooked & fluffy. Transfer quinoa to the bowl with the pumpkin. In a non-stick pan on medium heat, brown onion, carrot, garlic & ginger. Transfer cooked vegetables into the bowl with pumpkin & quinoa, along with spinach, spices, parsley, mustard, yoghurt & lemon juice. Season well with salt & pepper before mixing well until mixture comes together & begins to stick. Preheat oven to 200Âşc. With the sheets of pastry on top of one another & each brushed with a small amount of oil, cut into 8 equal rectangles. Arrange each separate sheet into a non-stick muffin tray. Fill each filo casing with pumpkin quinoa mixture. Fold the edges of the pastry over top of the mixture to enclose it. If need be, use extra pastry to fill gaps. Brush tops with milk. Cook in oven for 25 minutes then transfer to rack to cool. Enjoy! These are served best with a beetroot chutney or tzatziki.

Ti Point Road, Ti Point. Walk begins at the jetty around the foreshore, continuing onto Ti Point Scenic Reserve (DOC). Only five minutes into this walk, you feel as though you have been transported to somewhere enchanted. It’s breathtaking. The tree’s twist and tower, drape themselves over the grass covered in leaves. The ocean has “jump in” written all over it - With crystal clear waters overlooking Omaha Beach. Here you could stay, alongside a picnic, admiring the beauty in which surrounds you- or, you could carry on down the bushwalk, it eventually leading you to a set of boulders (This part more so for the rock-climbing advocates). Nevertheless, the remainder of the stroll radiates delicacy - Constantly providing panoramic views of our charming, kiwi ocean. Classic.

Meet Kylie... Interview Nicole White

Mental and sexual health isn’t easy to talk about, but one person that does know how to talk about it is Kylie Ryan. Kylie founded The Tough Stuff, an organisation that raises awareness about how to talk about mental and sexual health and build healthy relationships within the home and workplace. She has created this safe place that positively influences and helps young kiwis, through hard work and a passion for her job. Her social work degree has been able to provide a platform that she has built and expanded on to get her to the place of wideset and helpful influence on peoples lives. WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO?

I am the Wellbeing Educator for The University of Auckland. Currently my role is specifically around looking at mental health issues such as depression and anxiety for students, and see what we can do campus wide to help prevent students reaching crisis point, ensure that they know how to seek help when they need it, and to look at what we can do as a University to prevent anxiety, depression and any other health related issues that may impact students. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC?

I worked as a Social Worker in various DHBs, in both public and mental health. Then from there I went to work in a variety of non-government organisations that looked particularly at the prevention of suicide, sexual violence and drug and alcohol related harm. WHERE DID YOU BEGIN?

I completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Massey University when I left school, and my career has developed since then. HAVE YOU RUN INTO ANY OBSTACLES THAT HAVE SET YOU BACK?

No, I think the best thing has been taking no notice of those obstacles! Applying for jobs that weren’t necessarily a perfect fit with my degree, but where I had a real area of interest and passion. That has led to me working in lots of different fields, and being able to choose to work in the fields that I enjoy the most.

20

WHERE HAS IT TAKEN YOU?

I have now trained over 40000 young people and 15000 professionals in this field, which I love doing. I think it has taken me to a job that I really enjoy doing on a daily basis, feeling like the work you do makes a difference to another person’s life is a great way to end the day. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO WITH IT IN THE FUTURE?

The goal over the next year is to develop the Wellbeing Programme at The University of Auckland further, with a particular focus on those groups of students who we know are most at risk of mental illness. I will also be working on my own business The Tough Stuff, which specializes in working with parents, educators, and corporates around having tough conversations regarding both sexual health and mental health in the home, school and workplace. Educating others so that they have an understanding of what is effective in both prevention and responding to others who are experiencing issues in these areas. If you ever have any queries about mental or sexual health, Kylie is the one to talk to! You can email her at Kylie@thetoughstuff.co.nz or call her at 021301122.
