Letter from the Publisher It’s been a crazy past year because of Covid-19. And, although it’s not over just yet, progress has been made. Medications have been found that help symptoms and vaccinations have been developed that are starting to be administered. Until Covid-19 is a thing of the past, we’ve learned that there are things that we can do, ourselves, to try to stay safe, such as washing our hands often, wearing masks and social distancing. Although living in these uncertain times can be stressful, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has offered some tips to helps us cope, emotionally and mentally. • Stay connected with other people • Get a good night’s sleep • Eat healthy, well balanced meals • Stretch, take deep breaths, or meditate • Exercise regularly • Give yourself time to do activities that you enjoy and that help you unwind The Bev Roy Hope Foundation started and runs a wonderful Main Street Memory Café, in St. Charles, that provides social engagement and activity programs for people living with memory loss and their care partners. They’ve adapted their events so that they can continue safely, with social distancing. We’ve included some ideas for exercise and fun activities in this issue of the Guide that can help keep you healthy and happy in the new year. Warmest Wishes,

Our decisions about where we live can change throughout the different stages of our lives. LIVING OPTIONS Aging In Place
Rehabilitation
Aging in Place is staying in the home you live in. And, if needs arise, those needs are met by hiring outside assistance. Assistance can include home making assistance, transportation, personal care and skilled medical care. Frequency and duration of assistance varies by situation and can range from weekly visits to live-in assistance. Hospice can be available to assist the terminally ill.
Short-term live-in centers that offer rehabilitation services to help recovery from an injury, illness or surgery.
Independent Living – Senior Communities
Skilled Nursing
This is the choice of many active Seniors that choose to downsize. Senior Living Communities are age-restricted, usually to those 50 or 55+, and consist of low-maintenance apartments, homes or villas, attached or detached, where residents can care for themselves, completely, without assistance.
Respite Care
Assisted Living An Assisted Living Residence is a fulltime residence for adults that do not need ongoing skilled nursing care but require ongoing assistance with everyday tasks, such as dressing, bathing and eating.
Full-time residences that offer private or semi-private rooms, medical care and rehabilitation, meals, activities and programs.

In the small town of St. Charles, giving is a way of life. And there’s no better example than the Main Street Memory Café, a mission of the Bev Roy Hope Foundation. A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization providing social engagement programs for people living with memory loss and their care partners. “We love helping people in our community,” said Shelly Roy, Founder of the Memory Café. “All of our volunteers are so creative and we make a great team”. This year has been challenging, but we have adapted our events so we can continue to service our participants. Social distancing has changed the way we execute events, but it has not prevented us from making a difference. Through a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, we host weekly Zoom meetings to combat social isolation. With the help from the community and small business, our themed programs include, chair fitness, guest speakers, culture, music, arts, crafts, reminiscing and a lot of laughter. “We have so much fun together and we love making people smile.”
Main Street Memory Café is a program series for people living with mild to moderate stages of dementia-related illness, and their care partners. It is an enjoyable, social engagement series that helps people living with memory loss to live in the moment as they engage in the arts. Low Impact & Aerobic Exercises that are Good for You
Walking Walking can be done inside the home or around the neighborhood and can be done at your own pace. Brisk walking is also a great aerobic exercise that can improve your cardiovascular health, lower stress and lower blood pressure.
Leg Raises Leg raises can be done either sitting or standing, where you lift your leg, either straight, or bent at the knee. Leg raises can increase strength and, also, help improve balance.
Arm Raises Arm raises can be done either standing or sitting in a chair, and can be
done by raising the arm at the elbow or at the shoulder. Weights or resistance bands can be used to increase the workout.
Dancing In class, and at home, dancing is an aerobic activity that can help increase energy levels, strengthen your heart, boost overall mood and improve your memory.
Toe Lifts Toe lifts can be done by standing behind a chair and holding onto the back of the chair, while lifting up onto your toes and, then, lowering your foot back down flat onto the floor.
