WEEKEND Venues for the
‘KING OF BEERS’ CHANDELIER ABOVE
THE ESCALATORS
The chandelier hanging over the escalators is a rare piece known as the "King of Beers" Chandelier, of which only two exist in the world. Originally acquired by Adolphus Busch in 1904, the magnificent chandelier is adorned with beer hops and eagles, representing the prominent symbols of the Anheuser-Busch empire. Busch, nicknamed "The King of Beers," bestowed the title upon this remarkable fixture.
THE KEY WALL
FRONT LOBBY
Upon entering The Adolphus, your attention is immediately captured by the impressive key wall. These keys were once used to grant room access to countless guests throughout the decades. Originally boasting over 1,000 rooms, the hotel has undergone transformations to create 407 generously-sized and comfortable rooms.
BARBER
SHOP FIRST FLOOR
In 1915, The Adolphus introduced a barbershop as part of its amenities. Although it followed the trend of hotels during that era, the barbershop fell into disuse for many years. However, during the 2017 renovation, the tradition was revived, and a charming two-chair barbershop was brought back to life. The chairs in the barbershop were thoughtfully designed with custom footplates, paying homage to the hotel's rich history and adding a touch of nostalgia.
OTTO’S COFFEE
FIRST FLOOR
The Viennese-style coffee shop at The Adolphus is named after Otto Schubert, who served as the general manager from 1922 to 1946 and played a vital role in the hotel's national prominence. Before Otto's, The Rodeo Bar occupied the same space. In 1934, when there was a vote on liquor by the drink, the hotel staff wanted to present the first bar. Overnight, they transformed the coffee shop into a cocktail lounge, complete with bar glasses and counters. However, when the vote didn't pass, they quickly restored the space back to a coffee shop to resume normal operations. It is also home to one of LydiaÊs favorite breakfast sandwiches!
BACCHUS MIRROR
SOCIAL LOBBY
Situated at the top of the escalator, you'll find an impressive baronial mirror adorned with a prominently carved head of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. This magnificent mirror has graced the hotel since 1912, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship in the English-Regency style. Carefully carved from oak wood, the relief is embellished with laurel wreaths featuring hops, symbolizing the hotel's connection to Anheuser-Busch. This artistic choice pays tribute to the hotel's rich heritage and adds a delightful touch to the overall ambiance.
REMARKABLE PORTRAITS
UPPER LOBBY
Around the corner, a stunning 6-foottall neoclassical "Portrait of Napoleon" hangs, capturing his coronation in 1804. This exceptional artwork was commissioned by the emperor himself, donning regal ermine attire. Legend has it that Napoleon presented this portrait to the Escamp family. Furthermore, The French Room Bar showcases a collection of neoclassical portraits, providing guests with additional opportunities to admire these elegant artworks.
CITY HALL BISTRO
UPPER LOBBY
The hotelÊs bistro is a light, bright, all-day dining experience. The restaurant is named after the site where the hotel is built on. In the late 1800s the Dallas Chamber of Commerce asked Adolphus Busch to build a luxury hotel in downtown Dallas. Busch agreed on the condition that he could construct the hotel on the site of the 1880s Dallas City Hall for convenient distribution of his beer. It was believed all the original flooring had been demolished. During the 2017 restoration, The French Room SalonÊs carpeting was pulled up to reveal the hotel towerÊs original white marble flooring. The tiles were carefully honed to highlight their authentic patina and tell the history of the hotel.
THE CENTURY ROOM MEZZANINE
For decades, The Century Room stood as the bustling hub of Dallas entertainment. This remarkable venue showcased grand themed shows that mesmerized spectators. Former Olympian Dot Franey led an enchanting ice-skating revue, while captivating hula-dancing performances and a diverse array of musical acts, including Hildegarde, The Andrews Sisters, Benny Goodman, and Tony Bennett, graced the stage. Each new act brought forth a complete transformation of The Century Room, with palm trees adorning its Hawaiian-themed days and Western murals setting the scene for the cowboy ice-skating show, creating a truly immersive experience for all and on July 15th 2023, it will showcase the Heyman-Feltman wedding cocktail hour.
FIREPLACES
THE FRENCH ROOM BAR & DRAWING ROOM
The centerpiece of The French Room Bar is a red-lacquered Chinoiserie mantel, hand-carved in the mid-19th century. A black marble hearth accents the waxed mahogany wood sculpture. The fireplace originally sat in the central tower of The Adolphus but has since been moved to a much cozier corner of the hotel. The hotel originally featured several hearths in public spaces, but all were removed decades ago. In the 2017 renovation two large fireplaces imported from Italy were brought in to revitalize the space.
NOTABLE VISITORS THROUGH
HISTORY
The Adolphus has attracted many noteworthy guests through the years, including presidents, musicians, and even royalty. Notable guests include Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Annie Lennox, Mary Tyler Moore, Estée Lauder, Natalie Cole, Bing Crosby, U2, Buzz Aldrin, Maya Angelou, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. However, the most notable visitors will be the guests of the Heyman-Feltman wedding.
Enjoy your weekend!
