s we look down the road at 2011, one can’t help but wonder what culinary trends and

techniques are headed our way. We spoke with a few local chefs, and each offered a unique perspective. Yet, all of them agree on one thing: eating local is not a trend; rather, it is an approach that is here to stay. Martin

verywhere I go these days, there seems to be another menu offering a small-plate menu. In the

late 1990s, tapas became the food du jour, and since then, many new and interesting options in the small-plate genre have become available to us throughout Ventura County. It would be impossible to list them all in the short space available; I will try to geographically list some of my favorite locations for sampling this culinary alternative. First, in the southernmost tip of the county in Thousand Oaks is an unlikely option. On the second floor of Nordstrom at The Oaks Shopping Center, 346 W. Hillcrest Drive, 418-4010, is a warm and inviting restaurant called Blue Stove. The owner/manager of this elegant little eatery is Kian Farzadram, who owned Hornblower’s in the harbor for many years. Taking his restaurant expertise and combining it with Nordstrom’s exacting standards, Blue Stove offers an exceptional small-plates menu – I particularly like the risotto croquettes with serrano ham and roasted garlic tomato sauce and the braised short ribs with wilted spinach in a red wine demi-glace. This great small-plates menu is not just for the ladies who lunch. Go down the hill to Camarillo and visit Enoteca Toscana, 2088 E. Ventura Blvd., 445-1433.
