Steel nerves and whipping winds — mainstays of THE
kite surfer “You can have a good time, every time.” — Thom Hill, 42, a local kite surfer
Winds can whip kite surfers 30 feet into the air.

“
Severe weather warning: winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 40 mph,” the sweet siren’s song of the kite surfer. On a day like this, you can find these people at the far end of the two-dollar parking lot north of Surfers Point. They jump the parking barrier to inflate their kites and launch

off into the water. Seemingly with no regard for the work week, they flock to the beach. It doesn’t matter whether it is an innocuous Sunday afternoon or one o’clock on some idle Wednesday; if there is wind, they come. Thom Hill, 42, is one of those thrill seekers who can’t resist the call of the swirling winds and white-capped waves, workday or no. Self-employed, this surfer of 25 years was beguiled
— Summer Guide — 2010
by the idea of strapping himself to a “stunt kite on steroids” some five years ago. “It was a natural progression from surfing,” says Thom, “and Ventura is probably one of the top places on the West Coast [to kite surf].” This is the precipice of the sweet spot for kite surfing. From April to October, the consistent winds of the afternoon are rife for wrangling, and the iron-constituted men of this 10-year-old sport
take full advantage of that time. Even though it has become safer, this sport is not for the faint of heart or the thin of wallet. With equipment costs running as much as $3,000, these water bugs have the money and the skill to surf north of the point. Ventura is one of the more advanced launch and kite surfing spots, given the hazards and crowds the waters have to offer. The community of kite surfContinued on Page 8

A trip to

Can’t go to Hawaii this year? Try an affordable, exciting and convenient getaway to the Channel Islands instead
Michael Sullivan

michael@vcreporter.com
bout four weeks ago, I was planning a trip to Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, when I bumped into a near and dear friend — we had known each other since high school. I was talking to her about the normal, everyday things and spoke of my upcoming trip. A 29-year-old mother of two who had never lived anywhere but Ventura County told me she had never been out to the islands. “Tsk, tsk!” I told her. “How can you live here your whole life and never take a trip to the islands?” I thought perhaps she was an anomaly, but I was wrong. Turns out, there are many locals — too many, in fact — who have never enjoyed racing a pod of dolphins to and from the islands, catching a whale breaching, a breezy walk around Anacapa Island or a rugged climb around Santa Cruz Island. It never ceases to amaze me when people speak of their trips around the country — or the world, for that matter — who have never taken a day to enjoy the world-renowned Channel Islands.
Dolphins as far as the eye can see
I must admit that I was quite spoiled growing up. My mother had lots of friends in lots of places, and no matter what was happening in our life, she always knew someone who had a boat. And when all else failed, good ol’ Island Packers out of the Ventura Harbor was there to save the day. Little did I know, however, of my mom’s die-hard affinity for dolphins. It wasn’t until much later in my life that I realized how much she loved Flipper and his pals. That can be seen in the several hundred dolphin sculptures, shower curtains, toilet seats and salt and pepper shakers. But when everything is said and done, there is nothing like the real thing, and she would be the first to admit that. So when it came time to celebrate her 60th birthday and hold our family reunion, our trip to Santa Cruz Island a couple of years ago was something beyond special. Given how unique it was that all of our family members were at the same place at the same time, the mega-pod of dolphins that cruised alongside our Island Packers boat made our reunion something no one would forget. While I had seen dolphins make daring leaps out of the water, enjoying the wake of the boat, it was rather surprising when several of them started to do a dolphin dance — gyratContinued on Page 12

entura County boasts outstanding picnicking opportunities. Many sites feature ocean views, green hillsides or rushing rivers. The Ventura County Parks Department operates some of the most popular picnic venues, including Foster Park along the Ventura River near Casitas Springs, Steckel Park near Santa Paula and Ojai’s Soule Park. Ron Van Dyck manages the system and says the department is also proud of Camp Comfort, south of Ojai, where a new concessionaire has reversed years of neglect and a bad reputation that came with it. “Unfortunately, we lost a lot of customers and they haven’t come back

yet,” says Van Dyck. “It’s a beautiful park with the trees, the shade, lots of grass. It’s just gorgeous. It’s a little jewel that nobody knows about.” Most county-run parks have walkup picnic tables, and many have large, covered group pavilions that can be reserved for a fee. Several cities, park districts and the state government also maintain parks popular with picnickers, some with reservable sites. The Conejo Recreation and Park District offers numerous parks in Thousand Oaks with varied picnicking opportunities, including Conejo Community Park and Wildwood Park. Camarillo’s are managed by the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District, including rustic Camarillo Grove Park. Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District manages picnic areas

Drive the speed limit. Driving the speed limit allows you the necessary time to react to an emergency situation and decreases your chance of getting a ticket. Let aggressive drivers pass you. Don’t allow other drivers to dictate how you drive. Slow down during bad weather. Driving slower than the speed limit on rainy days or days with poor visibility. Leave early. Make sure you have plenty of time to get to your destination so you don’t feel pressured to speed or disobey traffic signals. Don’t tailgate other vehicles. Allow more distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. This will give you more time to react to an emergency situation and it increases your stopping distance.
