aquatic immersion by Lisa Snider The unique coastal geography of Ventura County — where mountains plunge into the sea then reappear as islands — offers an oceanic paradise for active kids who aren’t afraid to get a little wet.

S

CHOOL’S OUT, the kids are just itching for something fun to do—and parents are looking for summer activities to keep their youngsters busy and entertained. With the Pacific Ocean right on Ventura’s front door step, there’s no need to look far. For learning to surf, the nearby points and beaches offer some of the most ideal conditions you’ll find anywhere. And at the islands right across the channel, a world of exploration awaits.

kayaking. Park Rangers and volunteer naturalists offer guided hikes and interpretive talks on local plant, bird and animal life throughout the summer. Although the gray whale migration ended in late spring, it is possible to catch a glimpse of stragglers, and sightings of minke and humpbacks are possible. Dolphins, seals and sea lions almost always make an appearance. Foxes and bald eagles can be spotted on the islands as well.

— ISLAND EXPLORATIONS —

— CHANNEL CROSSING —

Whether it’s a day trip or an overnight camping adventure, our very own Channel Islands offer myriad activities for kids. This unique wilderness area provides an unbeatable opportunity for personal enrichment. Teenager Amaru Moses spent an entire week last summer on Santa Cruz Island, chopping non-native trees and hauling debris for the National Park Service. And he loved every minute of it. “The outdoor experience made me see a whole new job for myself,” explains the teen, who hiked and swam while learning all he could about the island’s eco-system. “It was a really good learning experience.” Island activities that kids will enjoy include hiking, fishing, snorkeling and

Temperatures on the islands are typically mild. But be prepared for wind, fog and sea spray. Dress in layers, and bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen. Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles. Island Packers is an approved park concessionaire with daily departures to the islands from Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor. For more information, call 805-642-1393 or visit www.islandpackers.com. For more information about the islands, visit Channel Islands National Park at www.nps.gov/chis and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary at www.channelislands.noaa.gov. — VC WAVES: DROPPING IN — Having surfed these waters for some 25 years, Evan Caples of Ventura Surf School is well aware that some parents are uneasy sending their kids into the water. “We'll get parents who are apprehensive, thinking their kids aren't strong enough swimmers or that there might be sharks,” he says. “But I’ve only seen a couple sharks in my life.” The instructors at Ventura Surf School can teach practically anyone. And when a kid catches their first wave and gets stoked on surfing, there’s no turning back. MOUNTAINS TO SEA

one tank treasures

by Ivor Davis

Culture. Sophistication. Luxury. They may be closer — and more affordable — than you think. Eternal optimist IVOR DAVIS reveals how the high price of gas makes living large this summer easier than ever.

I

N THESE INFLATIONARY DAYS when you need an equity line of credit just to fuel up the car, we have put together an itinerary of nearby delights that can be enjoyed on a single tank of gas. After all, we live in one of the most spectacular and sophisticated areas of the California coast—a region with places where most of the world dreams of hanging out. We love to zip up the freeway (outside of rush hour, of course) to Santa Barbara or head down Highway 33 to Ojai. While we wouldn’t swap either of them for Ventura, they are both extraordinarily nice places to visit. And you can partake of their delights without worrying about housing prices that make parts of Ventura County look a bargain.

— Santa Barbara — So let’s meander up the 101 to Santa Barbara. Before hitting downtown, you might stop at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club (3375 Foothill Rd., 805-684-6683, www.sbpolo.com), which is actually located in Carpinteria. It’s an incredibly picturesque spot nestled between the Santa Ynez

Mountains and the placid ocean off Serena Point. Polo may be the “Sport of Kings,” but even plain folk can enjoy watching the fabulously wealthy gallop about on horses that cost more than cars. Polo runs from mid-May to mid-October, and it’s certainly a unique spectator sport. Where else can one see grown men wearing knee-high boots and skin-tight trousers wielding mallets on a manicured field? If your budget doesn’t run to Champagne and seafood brunches, bring a picnic and the kids. Your only cost is $10 per person (kids under 12 free). Or, grab a burger at the affordable Polo Grill Restaurant. There are a number of cultural attractions in Santa Barbara, and even more hotel options. If you have money to burn, try the recently refurbished Four Seasons Biltmore (1260 Channel Dr., 805-9692261) or the historic San Ysidro Ranch (900 San Ysidro Ln., 805-969-5046), two of the area’s finest properties. Over the years, everyone from JFK and Jackie (they honeymooned at San Ysidro Ranch) to Winston Churchill have stayed at these Santa Barbara icons of la dolce vita. I personally like the historic Upham Hotel and Country House (1404 De La Vina St., 800-727-0876, — Continued on Page 23

This vintage but updated 135-year-old hotel was purchased in l982 by hotelier Carl Johnson, who also owns Ventura’s downtown Clocktower Inn. The Upham is the lone survivor of a bunch of old Santa Barbara resorts that were popular venues for the Armour meat packing family and the other captains of industry who left the east coast around the turn of the century in favor of Santa Barbara’s Riviera-like ambiance. Like the Biltmore and San Ysidro Ranch, the Upham isn’t cheap (around $300 a night). But staying somewhere upscale complements the Santa Barbara experience. Culinary options in Santa Barbara are virtually limitless. For contemporary dining with a fabulous view of the courthouse—one of the city’s most iconic and beautiful architectural pieces—try Elements Restaurant (129 E. Anapamu St., 805-884-9218). For a taste of Old Santa Barbara, drop into the legendary Harry’s Plaza Café (3313-B State St., 805-687-2000). Once you hit the Santa Barbara Waterfront, stroll onto Stearns Wharf and try the catch of the day at the Harbor Restaurant and Longboard’s Grill (upstairs). For something less touristy, continue on to the end of the pier, to the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company. Another local highlight is the Santa Barbara Zoo (500 Niños Dr., 805-962-5339), which is perched on one of the most stunning pieces of property anywhere in the world—a 16-acre knoll overlooking the

The plush cottages at San Ysidro Ranch have housed all manner of luminaries, from Winston Churchill to John and Jackie Kennedy, who honeymooned here.

shimmering Pacific, the bird refuge, and the wealthy enclave of Montecito. Its rolling hills and panoramic views make this zoo a perfect place for the entire family. On the cultural side, visit Santa Barbara’s Museum of Art (1130 State St., 805-963-4364), which offers an eclectic mix of exhibits. And if natural art is more your thing, there’s Lotusland (695 Ashley Rd., 805-969-9990), a mustsee botanic garden nestled in the foothills of Montecito. This unique garden, built into a 37-acre estate, was created by Madame Ganna Walska, who owned the property until her death in l984. “The Madame” was a Polish opera singer, although some said it was her beauty rather than her vocal talents that persuaded Chicago tycoon Harold McCormick to make her his second wife and create a career as a diva for her. Lotusland is a truly remarkable spot, and reservations are required. The gardens are open from mid-February to mid-November. Adults are $35, children 5-18 are $10, and kids under 5 get in free. If your taste runs to wine, there’s no need to go to Napa or Bordeaux. Right here in the Santa Ynez Valley

one finds a fabulous selection of wineries, with bottles that are every bit as good—in some cases better (and certainly cheaper)—than more celebrated wine regions. Pack a picnic lunch and start planning your wine tour by calling 805-688-0881, or go online to www.sbcountywines.com or www.syva.

— OJAI — Ojai is a charming alternative to Santa Barbara. It can be somewhat hot in the summer, but the sun is always a welcome sight when the coast is enveloped in fog. Locals here boast that Ojai—which is a Chumash Indian word meaning “Valley of the Moon”—has a uniquely spiritual atmosphere because of its geographic valley location. Apocryphal or not, there is an atmosphere of calm and serenity not found in many Southern California resorts. Ojai actually doubled as Shangri-la in the classic l937 Frank Capra movie Lost Horizon, starring Ronald — Continued on Page 26

Coleman. And the community has been home to Eastern philosophers such as Jiddu Krishnamurti. In fact, those wanting to study the work of the late Indian guru at the ranch he called home can call The Krishnamurti Retreat (805-648-4773, www.kfa.org). To feel the karma at its best, be there for the famous “pink moment,” when a few milliseconds after the suns sets, the ring of mountains containing the valley turns a soft pinkish lavender. Ojai, of course, has its fair share of down-toearth delights. There’s the top quality Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, which sits on 220 carefully tended acres and is a popular getaway spot for the Westside L.A. crowd with disposable income. In the old days, such celebrities as Clark Gable, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, and Paul Newman liked to stay here. You can play their championship golf course (a popular spot for the PGA Senior crowd), or drive a little further to Ojai’s Soule Park course (1033 E. Ojai Ave., 805-646-6533), where green fees are a reasonable $30-47 and the on-site restaurant and bar is a pretty good bargain. But at least take a look at the Inn, which was recently restored using plans from the original Spanish revival architect Wallace Neff. Even if your budget can’t take the hit of renting one of the golfside villas, you can still drive on the property, sip a pint of beer, and sample the superb pizza at Jimmy’s Pub. Ojai resident Malcolm McDowell swears it’s the best pizza in all of Southern California. Ventura has a magnificent annual Music Festival, but for a summer change of tempo and a contempo-

rary sound, there’s the provocative, if sometimes dissonant, Ojai Music Festival. The 61st annual event runs June 7-l0. For info, call 805-646-2094. One of our favorite wineries also calls Ojai home. It’s the delightfully rustic Old Creek Winery (10024 Old Creek Rd., 805-649-4132, www.winery@oldcreekranch.com), run by Ventura’s John and Carmel Whitman. Don’t be fooled by the bucolic, unpretentious setting: These folks know what they’re doing; they’ve been making wine for more than 20 years. Bring a picnic and wash it down with the Old Creek sauvignon blanc, merlot, or sangiovese. The winery is open on weekends. There are a slew of reasonably priced accommodations in Ojai. We particularly like the charming Lavender Inn B and B downtown, a historic spot to spend the night (210 E, Matilija St., 805-648-3397). They have seven rooms and a cottage suite. Weekday rates run from $115-$l90. Weekend rates go to $125-$210. A particularly pleasant spot for lunch or dinner is the outside patio at Suzanne’s Cuisine (502 West Ojai Ave., 805-640-1961, www.suzannescuisine.com), where owner/chef Suzanne Roll has been serving up the best of local food since long before “eating locally” became fashionable. So there you have it. The sky high price of gas this summer could actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Once you’ve sampled some of the treasures our local area has to offer, you may decide to never again go far for entertainment, food, wine, and relaxation. Invite your friends from L.A. to visit. And make them buy the gas.

From the wild Sespe to the waves of C-Street, Ventura County offers an array of adventures. Here, CHUCK GRAHAM joins Los Padres Outfitters on a muleback excursion through the local backcountry — where the cycle of life burns as strongly as ever.

40 —

G

RAHAM GOODFIELD led a string of trail-tested mules through a ravine deep within the Sespe Wilderness. They hugged the Sespe Creek, ducking under cottonwood limbs to enter a remote camp no longer hidden by oak trees and dense chaparral. Back in September, the “Day Fire” had blazed through this forest, finally burning itself out on October 3. It transformed Ventura County’s rugged wilderness into a blackened moonscape of soot-filled dust devils and barbequed native trees, like the manzanita and cottonwood. But it also revealed myriad hidden pools and trails that hadn’t felt the weight of hiking boots for many moons. The Sespe Creek eventually feeds the Sespe River—a geographic gem so magnificent that in 1968 Congress deemed it a Wild and Scenic River, preserving forever its free-flowing condition, as well as its unique flora and fauna. This wilderness is unpredictable, but it’s nothing new

to Goodfield, 28, who’s been exploring and working here since he was a wide-eyed teenager. His first backcountry job was working for Tony Alvis’ mule pack outfit. “At 14, I had a horse and begged him for jobs,” recalls Goodfield, a graduate of Carpinteria High School. “He finally gave me some stuff to do, like welding and shoeing horses.” Eventually Goodfield gained Alvis’ trust, moving up the ladder and assisting him on excursions into the remote regions of the San Raphael, Dick Smith, and Sespe Wilderness areas. When Alvis died tragically during the La Conchita mudslide of January 2005, Graham bought the business. Nowadays, he proudly carries the torch, running Los Padres Outfitters— the only company of its kind in the local area. His trips provide a unique opportunity to venture into this rugged forest atop mules. And his outdoor skills are unparalleled. — Continued on Page 42

thousand feet above the Sespe Hot Springs and other arteries that drain into the region. The mules plodded along in single file between beautiful manzanita limbs bordering each side of the trail. As the trail steepened and grew narrower, everyone leaned forward in their saddles. Finally we reached a plateau and marveled at the rugged beauty of the Sespe. Further along, the trail became even more precarious. A wrong step

“I knew this is what I wanted to do,” says Goodfield, who in 2004 earned a degree in outdoor recreation from Southeast Missouri State. “This is my home, where I want to be. And I’m the only one doing it.” Goodfield has guided hunts and fishing trips. He worked as a cook for an outfitter on the North Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, fine tuning his outdoor culinary skills, which prepared him to work miracles with the weathered Dutch ovens scattered across remote camps in the Los Padres. His mother, Marilyn, also taught him a few things, and even assists her son on some of his trips. The kitchen was open during our four-day excursion into the Sespe with Goodfield and six others. Around a raging fire, Graham grilled salmon and whipped up some delicious crab and cheese enchiladas with rice. After a half-day of exploring backcountry peaks and scouring precarious rocky ledges looking for the elusive desert bighorn sheep, Goodfield had a rack of ribs waiting for us. We soaked in the Sespe Hot Springs, and then rode back to camp, flanked by his loveable pooches Buck and Cruz, before devouring a meal of seasoned pot roast, pasta, and cornbread. Food always tastes better when you’re camping. But this was ridiculously good. It just doesn’t get any better.

here, in the crumbly shale, could send animal and rider over the edge into the big plunge. But the surefooted mules easily negotiated the trail—which was, at this point, no wider than their hoofs. Once we reached Mutau Flats, there was plenty of elbow room for everyone amongst the towering pine trees that swayed over a newly sprouted meadow. A lone sandstone rock outcropping jutted from the plateau, an ancient Chumash Indian site pockmarked with gritty clefts and alcoves. We tied off the animals and carefully studied each cavity. Sandstone was their wilderness canvas, and there are over 100 known rock art sites in the Los Padres. Several insects and frogs colored in red oxidized ore decorated the weathered walls and ceilings, but the most impressive figure was what appeared to be a black-colored bear. Perhaps the ancient artist used charcoal, or burned graphite, to create this mystical figure? Regardless, Mutau Flats is a special place, and was one of the highlights of our trip.

— Intimate Encounters — When you spend as much time in the backcountry as Goodfield, you’re bound to accumulate plenty of memories, things that make life away from mainstream society special. You learn to tuck them under your hat to dwell on during a rainy day. For four years, Goodfield crossed paths with a black bear beyond the upper reaches of Piedras Blancas, northeast of the Sespe Creek. But this wasn’t an ordinary black bear. It was a much rarer form of Ursus americanus—a blonde bear.

“It felt like we had a special bond,” recalls Goodfield. “I was a hoping a hunter would never get that bear.” But following the Wolf Fire, which blazed through the region several years ago, Goodfield took a ride through the still smoldering wilderness where he’d regularly seen the blonde bear. And there on a blackened terrace he discovered it in a state he never imagined. “Its skeleton was all that was there,” he tells me. “It was crouched down with its paws over its face, like it had been trapped by the fire and that’s all it could do. I picked up its skull and it disintegrated in my hands, like it had been cremated.” As he told me the tale, I sat atop a mule aptly named “Smoke.” All around us, the landscape of the Sespe appeared as if a volcano had erupted. It seemed this wilderness would never recover. But shortly we came upon a broad patch of fresh grass springing to life from the nutrient-rich ash covering Cottrell Flats. In spite of a relatively dry winter, the cycle of life went on: a Sespe still wild signifying its inevitable rebirth.

The eclectic crowd, fresh seafood and beachfront location come together to make this one of the best flip-flop dining experiences in VC. And yes, this epicenter of California beach culture is located north of the LA County line. Fresh local seafood and produce complements the view of crashing waves, while the adjacent oil pier and palm-crowned Rincon Island (better known as “Gilligan’s Island”) add a unique perspective. During big winter swells, there is no better place for wave watching. But in summer, the Shoals is a prime spot for flip-flopping.
