ric Gillett remembers watching the 1984 Olympic rowing competition at Lake Casitas, where America’s Brad Lewis and Paul Enquist sculled to the gold. Gillett was just 14, but seeing the athletes pull across the glassy lake stirred a lifelong passion in him for rowing. “For me looking at that, seeing Americans win, seeing these people who had committed such a large amount of time to mak-

ing the Olympic team, was really inspiring, he explained. Thousands edged the lake that summer day, but after the medals were won and the celebrations were finished, the rowing boats were put away – for more than two decades. Lake Casitas was quiet as Gillett, who was attending high school in Marin County, picked up oars and began to train for the Olympic rowing team. After training at Princeton, Gillett was just shy of making one of the six seats on the Olympic sculling boat, but he did row on the U.S. National Team, where he took

home a silver medal at a World Championship race in Germany. Soon after, Gillett returned to the lake where it all began: “I wanted to bring the rowing back and make it available to high school kids, because that’s how I learned to row and rowing really changed my life. It gave me focus for what I was doing and gave me a real passion for being alive. Lake Casitas is quiet no more. Mornings and evenings Gillett and his wife, Wendy, coach youth and adult rowing teams through their nonprofit Casitas Rowing Association. Their goal, Gillett explains, is to make rowing

“accessible to everyone. The association is holding several classes this summer, as well as private lessons. Adult and junior classes will be held in June and July, and two-week classes for kids will be held throughout the summer. Four times per year the Gilletts also hold Learn to Row events, where community members can try rowing, for free. Several teams, including a high school and adult team, practice throughout the year and compete in state championships. Sisters Stephanie and Justine Avila, of Continued on Page 8

dults, let’s face it: Summer means little. As a child, it’s the season of freedom — relinquished from the shackles of everyday responsibility, you’re allowed to run wild in the streets. Anything is possible. The world is yours. But past age, oh, 21 or so, it is no longer socially acceptable to chase after the ice cream man or fling yourself down a Slip’n’Slide. Once school is over and your “career begins, all summer means is your commute to work will be even hotter and more uncomfortable. There is, however, one classic element of summertime that the less youthful can still enjoy during these months without ridicule: barbeque. As the sounds of children laughing and dousing themselves with garden hoses fill the air, and just as nostalgia is about to creep up and bite your soul, the overpowering aroma of meat intervenes and reminds you that, hey, you might be old, but at least you can operate a grill now. Of course, some of us aren’t that skilled. That’s why the following restaurants exist: To give you the adult summer experience, without you having to work for it.

IT’S IN THE SAUCE Better known as “the place with the creepy mannequin chef out front, It’s In The Sauce is no-frills barbeque — when the menu says “Tri-Tip Sandwich, that’s precisely what you’re going to get: a stack of tri-tip between two pieces of bread. And honestly, that’s all you need. Located at the corner of Main and Catalina streets across from Ventura High School, the business is even less pretentious than the average BBQ joint. It is basically just a walk-up window. But on a warm summer day, there is really nothing better than smoked meat slathered in their sweet, tangy homemade sauce. Just don’t let that mannequin Continued on Page 14

THE BLUE WHALES ARE COMING! There is no such thing as a pink elephant, but there really are blue whales. They are the largest living creature ever to inhabit our planet. You can see them in the biggest aquarium in the world, the Santa Barbara Channel. The largest gathering of the endangered blue whale happens here this summer. Space is limited, so make your reservation now for what will be a most amazing and enriching experience with nature. Be sure to bring the kids – if they think the dinosaurs were big, they ain’t seen nothing yet! (mention this ad’s promotion code SG-1 and receive a special commemorative gift)
